Abstract

In Phil. Trans., xv, 177, pp. 1231–6, 1685, there appeared a paper entitled “The Solution of Three Chorographic Problems”. The writer's name was concealed under the letters M.P.S.O. (Member of the Philosophical Society of Oxford). Asked if he would kindly consult someone as to the identity of the author, the late Prof. H. H. Turner, F.R.S., occupying the Savilian Chair of Astronomy at Oxford, was good enough to place the inquiry in the capable hands of the late Dr J. K. Fotheringham.

3. Adjustment of a Polygon.—The adjustment of a polygon by the method of the preceding paragraph leads to results similar to that for a quadrilateral, although not quite so simple, since there are two correlatives, k₁ k₂ , for deducing the corrections.     

MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF THE TRANSIT THEODOLITE—II

Abstract

In this paper we shall consider the errors in the measurement of horizontal angles arising from periodic errors of graduation of the horizontal circle, and the effect on such errors of repeating observations of the same angle on different “zeroes”. The question is not only one of interest from the point of view of mathematical and instrumental theory, but it also has practical applications.

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES OF THE WORLD—A NEW SOVIET ATLAS

The authors employ remote sensing imagery and existing landscape maps to gain greater insight into how pre-glacial tectonic activity contributes to landscape development in old glaciated regions by affecting the form and movements of lobes of past continental ice sheets. Using the Belorussian SSR as a study area, the authors identify several features of current landscape structure which can serve as indicators of past tectonic activity, the most reliable being various characteristics of the landscape family—defined as a combination of natural territorial complexes of similar origin and age. PRESENT SITUATION AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF MAP REPRODUCTION IN CHINA

Map reproductin and printing has a close relation with electronics, physics, machinebuilding, chemistry and computer sciences. It develops as these sciences grow and forms up its theoretical and technological systems during its own progress. The development of remote sensing cartography and thematic cartogrphy, and the apparent increase of map varieties and colorful presentation forms call those engaged in map reproduction and printing not only to produce ordinary topographic maps and atlases but also to print various continuous tone images. The expanded study area of the profession has made a much higher requirement of the map printers.

Beacon Lamps.—The design of electric directional projector used has been altered slightly as the triangulation has progressed, but for the sake of simplicity it is proposed to describe in detail only the final form, which is now a standard article manufactured by Messrs Cooke, Troughton, & Simms.     

GEODETIC WORK IN INDIA—WAR AND POST-WAR

Abstract

Although during World War II field work on geodetic subjects other than those directly connected with the war effort remained practically in abeyance, the war provided unique opportunities for the study and execution of several interesting problems such as the linking of Indian triangulation with Iraq and Iran on the one hand and Siam and Malaya on the other. A detailed account of the Geodetic work of the Survey of India during the period 1939-47 is given in the Survey of India “Technical Report 1947—Part III, Geodetic Work”.

WORK OF THE CADASTRAL SURVEY AND LAND RECORDS OFFICE, 1932–45

Abstract

On the occasion of the Empire Survey Conference in 1931 we had the privilege of arranging at the Science Museum an Exhibition of Cadastral Maps and Land Records which had been somewhat hurriedly collected from the United Kingdom, the Dominions, India, eleven Colonies and Protectorates, three Mandated Territories and six foreign countries. As there is some vagueness in the application in English of the French word cadastre, it may be advisable before proceeding to say that while in Europe this word, with its German and Italian equivalents, originally applied to a record of landed property (biens fonds) compiled for fiscal purposes and is commonly still so defined in standard dictionaries, we have throughout used it in the wider sense it has gradually been assuming generally of any analogous record concerned with subdivisions of land occasioned by human use, whether the purpose to be primarily served is fiscal, juridical, economic or otherwise. Cadastral survey is the process by which the parcels of land dealt with are defined, and can be located again at need. The noun, which is rarely mentioned in English, was from the earliest days applied to the whole conspectus of the record: registers, maps, supporting documents, etc. We use the term land record loosely, and somewhat unsatisfactorily, in this comprehensive sense because the more convenient and exact one-cadastral record-has not so far found a place in British practice with its associates: cadastral maps and cadastral survey.     

CLAUDE REIGNIER CONDER (1848–1910) AND THE SURVEY OF PALESTINE

Abstract

Few surveyors can have been set a more interesting task than that which fell to the lot of Claude Conder, who first thoroughly explored and mapped the Holy Land some seventy years ago. His work is still of value, and must be referred to by all who are concerned with the ancient topography and archreology of that country. It may be found interesting to consider exactly what the task was, how it was accomplished, and something of the career of the young man who successfully carried it through.
