We study rapid cosmic-ray fluctuations using 5-min resolution data from eight neutron monitors with different cutoff rigidities as well as from the ACE satellite. We define a proxy index of rapid cosmic-ray fluctuations as the mean power of the cosmic-ray power spectrum in the frequency range 10−4 −1.67 × 10−3 Hz (10 min to about 3 h). A dominant 11-year periodicity in the index is found in all neutron monitors. We also report on intermittent, short-term periodicities in the power of rapid cosmic-ray fluctuations. A strong mid-term periodicity of about 1.6 – 1.8 years, possibly related to a recently found similar periodicity in IMF, appears in CR fluctuation power since the 1980s. Another strong periodicity is found at 1 year, which is likely related to the relative position of the Earth in the heliosphere. These results also provide new challenge to test the cosmic-ray modulation theory.  相似文献

We study the temporal behavior of the power spectra for Galactic cosmic-ray fluctuations during the last two solar cycles. We use the 5-min data for 1980–2002 corrected for the barometric effect from two widely separated high-latitude cosmic-ray stations, Tixie Bay and Oulu. The cosmicray fluctuation spectrum is shown to be subjected to a regular long-term modulation with a period of about 11 years in phase with the solar cycle, in accordance with the variations in the inertial part of the turbulence spectrum for the interplanetary magnetic field. Based on independent measurements, we confirm the previously detected cosmic-ray fluctuation power enhancement at the maximum of the 11-year solar cycle and its subsequent decrease at minimum solar activity using new, more extensive data sets. We reach the conclusion about the establishment of a new cosmic-ray modulation phenomenon that has not been described previously in scientific literature.  相似文献

Using the maximum entropy method (MEM), the cosmic-ray power spectral density in the frequency range 3 × 10–9–2 × 10–7 Hz has been estimated for the period 1947–1990. Cosmic-ray intensity data were integrated from the ion chamber at Huancayo and the neutron monitor at Deep River, following the method of Nagashima and Morishita (1980). The estimated spectrum shows power-law dependence (f –1.62), with several peaks superimposed. Periodicities of the different peaks are identified and related to solar activity phenomena; most of them were reported in the past. Once the 11-yr variation is eliminated, the most prominent feature in the spectrum is a variation, not reported before, with a period of 1.68 yr (604.8 d). This peak is correlated with fluctuations of similar periodicities found in the southern coronal hole area and in large active regions. The importance that this variation may have to elucidate the solar magnetic flux emergence and the activity cycle is discussed.Deceased 10 April, 1995.  相似文献

Power spectral analysis of cosmic-ray intensity recorded by eight stations was carried out over a wide range of frequencies from 2.3 × 10–8 Hz to 5.8 × 10–6 Hz (2–500 days) during the period 1964–1995. Spectrum results of large-scale fluctuations have revealed the existence of a broad peak near 250–285 days and a narrower peak at 45–50 days during the studied epochs as a stable feature in all neutron monitors covering a wide rigidity range. The cosmic-ray power spectrum displayed significant peaks of varying amplitude with the solar rotation period (changed inversely with the particle rigidities) and its harmonics. The amplitudes of 27-day and 13.5-day fluctuations are greater during the positive-polarity epochs of the interplanetary magnetic field (qA>0) than during the qA<0 epochs. The comparison of cosmic-ray power spectra during the four successive solar activity minima have indicated that at the low-rigidity particles the spectrum differences between the qA>0 and qA<0 epochs are significantly large. Furthermore, the spectrum for even solar maximum years are higher and much harder than the odd years. There are significant differences in the individual spectra of solar maxima for different cycles.  相似文献

We present ACE observations for the six-day period encompassing the Bastille Day 2000 solar activity. A high level of transient activity at 1 AU, including ICME-driven shocks, magnetic clouds, shock-accelerated energetic particle populations, and solar energetic ions and electrons, are described. We present thermal ion composition signatures for ICMEs and magnetic clouds from which we derive electron temperatures at the source of the disturbances and we describe additional enhancements in some ion species that are clearly related to the transient source. We describe shock acceleration of 0.3–2.0 MeV nucl−1 protons and minor ions and the relative inability of some of the shocks to accelerate significant energetic ion populations near 1 AU. We report the characteristics of < 20 MeV nucl−1 solar energetic ions and < 0.32 MeV electrons and attempt to relate the release of energetic electrons to particular source regions.  相似文献

Properties of even and odd 11-year solar cycles as part of the 22-year magnetic cycle have been studied on the basis of the data on the zonal structure of the large-scale magnetic field, of polar faculae activity cycles, duration of 11-year cycles, high-latitude prominence areas, inclinations of the coronal streamers, velocity of magnetic neutral line migration, and peculiarities of the polar magnetic field reversal. It is shown that the properties of the odd cycle depend on those of the preceding even cycle. The 22-year magnetic cycle, consisting of an even and odd cycle, is a unified dynamic process. The new data obtained show that the poloidal magnetic fieldB(p) of ‘+’ and ‘−’ polarity for the new 22-year magnetic cycle is formed simultaneously, possibly in deep layers of the Sun in the form of a certain magnetic configuration, containing alternating ‘+’ and ‘−’ polarities of the field.  相似文献

Cosmic rays registered by Neutron Monitor on the surface of the Earth are believed to originate from outer space, and sometimes also from the exotic objects of the Sun. Whilst the intensities of the cosmic rays are observed to be enhanced with sudden, sharp and short-lived increases, they are termed as ground level enhancements (GLEs). They are the occurrences in solar cosmic ray intensity variations on short-term basis, so different solar factors erupted from the Sun can be responsible for causing them. In this context, an attempt has been made to determine quantitative relationships of the GLEs having peak increase >5% with simultaneous solar, interplanetary and geophysical factors from 1997 through 2006, thereby searching the responsible factors which seem to cause the enhancements. Results suggest that GLE peaks might be caused by solar energetic particle fluxes and solar flares. The proton fluxes which seemed to cause GLE peaks were also supported by their corresponding fluences. For most of the flares, the time integrated rising portion of the flare emission refers to the strong portion of X-ray fluxes which might be the concern to GLE peak. On an average, GLE peak associated X-ray flux (0.71×10−4 w/m2) is much stronger than GLE background associated X-ray flux (0.11×10−6 w/m2). It gives a general consent that the GLE peak is presumably caused by the solar flare. Coronal mass ejection alone does not seem to cause GLE. Coronal mass ejection presumably causes geomagnetic disturbances characterized by geomagnetic indices and polarities of interplanetary magnetic fields.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray intensity data for the period 1964–1985 covering two solar cycles are used to investigate the solar activity behaviour in relation to cosmic-ray modulation. A detailed statistical analysis of them shows a large time-lag of about one and half years between cosmic-ray intensity and solar activity (as indicated by sunspot number, solar flares and high-speed solar-wind streams) during the 21st solar cycle appearing for a first time. This lag indicates the very high activity level of this solar cycle estimating the size of the modulating region to the unambiguous value of 180 AU. The account of the solar-wind speed in the 11-year variation significantly decreases the modulation region of cosmic-rays to the value of 40 AU.A comparison with the behaviour of the previous solar cycle establishes a distinction between even and odd solar cycles. This is explained in terms of different contributions of drift, convection and diffusion to the whole modulation mechanism during even and odd solar cycles.  相似文献

Long-term variations of galactic cosmic rays were compared with the behavior of various solar activity indices and heliospheric parameters during the current solar cycle. This study continues previous works where the cosmic-ray intensity for the solar cycles 20, 21, and 22 was well simulated from the linear combination of the sunspot number, the number of grouped solar flares, and the geomagnetic index A p. The application of this model to the current solar cycle characterized by many peculiarities and extreme solar events led us to study more empirical relations between solar-heliospheric variables, such as the interplanetary magnetic field, coronal mass ejections, and the tilt of the heliospheric current sheet, and cosmic-ray modulation. By analyzing monthly cosmic-ray data from the Neutron Monitor Stations of Oulu (cutoff rigidity 0.81 GV) and Moscow (2.42 GV) the contribution of these parameters in the ascending, maximum, and descending phases of the cycle was investigated and it is shown that a combination of these parameters reproduces the majority of the modulation potential variations during this cycle. The approach applied makes it possible to better describe the behavior of cosmic rays in the epochs of the solar maxima, which could not be done before. An extended study of the time profiles, the correlations, and the time lags of the cosmic-ray intensity against these parameters using the method of minimizing RMS over all the considered period 1996 – 2006 determines characteristic properties of this cycle as being an odd cycle. Moreover, the obtained hysteresis curves and a correlative analysis during the positive polarity (qA>0, where q is the particle charge) and during the negative polarity (qA<0) intervals of the cycle result in significantly different behavior between solar and heliospheric parameters. The time lag and the correlation coefficient of the cosmic-ray intensity are higher for the solar indices in comparison to the heliospheric ones. A similar behavior also appears in the case of the intervals with positive and negative polarity of the solar magnetic field.  相似文献

A search for any particular feature in any single solar neutrino dataset is unlikely to establish variability of the solar neutrino flux since the count rates are very low. It helps to combine datasets, and in this article we examine data from both the Homestake and GALLEX experiments. These show evidence of modulation with a frequency of 11.85 year−1, which could be indicative of rotational modulation originating in the solar core. We find that precisely the same frequency is prominent in power spectrum analyses of the ACRIM irradiance data for both the Homestake and GALLEX time intervals. These results suggest that the solar core is inhomogeneous and rotates with a sidereal frequency of 12.85 year−1. From Monte Carlo calculations, it is found that the probability that the neutrino data would by chance match the irradiance data in this way is only 2 parts in 10 000. This rotation rate is significantly lower than that of the inner radiative zone (13.97 year−1) as recently inferred from analysis of Super-Kamiokande data, suggesting that there may be a second, inner tachocline separating the core from the radiative zone. This opens up the possibility that there may be an inner dynamo that could produce a strong internal magnetic field and a second solar cycle.  相似文献

The ability to predict times of greater galactic cosmic ray (GCR) fluxes is important for reducing the hazards caused by these particles to satellite communications, aviation, or astronauts. The 11-year solar-cycle variation in cosmic rays is highly correlated with the strength of the heliospheric magnetic field. Differences in GCR flux during alternate solar cycles yield a 22-year cycle, known as the Hale Cycle, which is thought to be due to different particle drift patterns when the northern solar pole has predominantly positive (denoted as qA>0 cycle) or negative (qA<0) polarities. This results in the onset of the peak cosmic-ray flux at Earth occurring earlier during qA>0 cycles than for qA<0 cycles, which in turn causes the peak to be more dome-shaped for qA>0 and more sharply peaked for qA<0. In this study, we demonstrate that properties of the large-scale heliospheric magnetic field are different during the declining phase of the qA<0 and qA>0 solar cycles, when the difference in GCR flux is most apparent. This suggests that particle drifts may not be the sole mechanism responsible for the Hale Cycle in GCR flux at Earth. However, we also demonstrate that these polarity-dependent heliospheric differences are evident during the space-age but are much less clear in earlier data: using geomagnetic reconstructions, we show that for the period of 1905?–?1965, alternate polarities do not give as significant a difference during the declining phase of the solar cycle. Thus we suggest that the 22-year cycle in cosmic-ray flux is at least partly the result of direct modulation by the heliospheric magnetic field and that this effect may be primarily limited to the grand solar maximum of the space-age.  相似文献

Abstract— Previous studies have shown that the Kapoeta howardite, as well as several other meteorites, contains excess concentrations of cosmogenic Ne in the darkened, solar-irradiated phase compared to the light, non-irradiated phase. The two explanations offered for the nuclear production of these Ne excesses in the parent body regolith are either from galactic cosmic-ray proton (GCR) irradiation or from a greatly enhanced flux of energetic solar “cosmic-ray” protons (SCR), as compared to the recent solar flux. Combining new isotopic data we obtained on acid-etched, separated feldspar from Kapoeta light and dark phases with literature data, we show that the cosmogenic 21Ne/22Ne ratio of light phase feldspar (0.80) is consistent with only GCR irradiation in space for ~3 Ma. However, the 21Ne/22Ne ratio (0.68) derived for irradiation of dark phase feldspar in the Kapoeta regolith indicates that cosmogenic Ne was produced in roughly equal proportions from galactic and solar protons. Considering a simple model of an immature Kapoeta parent body regolith, the duration of this early galactic exposure was only ~3–6 Ma, which would be an upper limit to the solar exposure time of individual grains. Concentrations of cosmogenic 21Ne in pyroxene separates and of cosmogenic 126Xe in both feldspar and pyroxene are consistent with this interpretation. The near-surface irradiation time of individual grains in the Kapoeta regolith probably varied considerably due to regolith mixing to an average GCR irradiation depth of ~10 cm. Because of the very different depth scales for production of solar ~Fe tracks, SCR Ne, and GCR Ne, the actual regolith exposure times for average grains probably differed correspondingly. However, both the SCR 21Ne and solar track ages appear to be longer because of enhanced production by early solar activity. The SCR/GCR production ratio of 21Ne inferred from the Kapoeta data is larger by a at least a factor of 10 and possibly as much as a factor of ~50 compared to recent solar particle fluxes. Thus, this study indicates that our early Sun was much more active and emitted a substantially higher flux of energetic (>10 MeV/nucleon) protons.  相似文献

Using the combined Greenwich (1874 – 1976) and Solar Optical Observatories Network (1977 – 2009) data on sunspot groups, we study the long-term variations in the mean daily rates of growth and decay of sunspot groups. We find that the minimum and the maximum values of the annually averaged daily mean growth rates are ≈ 52% day−1 and ≈ 183% day−1, respectively, whereas the corresponding values of the annually averaged daily mean decay rates are ≈ 21% day−1 and ≈ 44% day−1, respectively. The average value (over the period 1874 – 2009) of the growth rate is about 70% more than that of the decay rate. The growth and the decay rates vary by about 35% and 13%, respectively, on a 60-year time scale. From the beginning of Cycle 23 the growth rate is substantially decreased and near the end (2007 – 2008) the growth rate is lowest in the past about 100 years. In the extended part of the declining phase of this cycle, the decay rate steeply increased and it is largest in the beginning of the current Cycle 24. These unusual properties of the growth and the decay rates during Cycle 23 may be related to cause of the very long declining phase of this cycle with the unusually deep and prolonged current minimum. A ≈ 11-year periodicity in the growth and the decay rates is found to be highly latitude and time dependent and seems to exist mainly in the 0° – 10° latitude interval of the southern hemisphere. The strength of the known approximate 33 – 44-year modulation in the solar activity seems to be related to the north-south asymmetry in the growth rate. Decreasing and increasing trends in the growth and the decay rates indicate that the next 2 – 3 solar cycles will be relatively weak.  相似文献

Bidecadal fluctuations in terrestrial climate were analyzed. It was shown that this variability might arise if Earth's climate reacts to galactic cosmic-ray intensity, integrated over its full quasi-11-year cycle. It was further shown that this integral effect should also lead to an effective link between climate and the duration of the quasi-11-year cycle in cosmic ray flux. That, in turn, must result in appearance of some connection between climate and the length of the solar cycle, which is currently a topic of active debate. Analyses of temperature proxies, obtained for northern Fennoscandia, confirmed the connection of the climate in this region and the length of the cycle in galactic cosmic-ray intensity. Decadal and bidecadal variability of integrated cosmic-ray flux was quantitatively estimated.  相似文献

We report on our observations of solar energetic particle fluxes of p, He, C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe ions measured by the Energetic and Relativistic Nucleon and Electron (ERNE) experiment associated with the Bastille Day solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) on 14 July 2000. We observed two clear maxima of the Fe/O ratio at the energies 8.5–15 MeV nucl−1. The first Fe/O maximum occurred ∼ 3 hours after the beginning of the particle event, and the second maximum ∼ 22 hours after the first one at the arrival of the shock associated with the Bastille Day eruption. We also observed a change in the energy spectrum of oxygen concurrent with a change in the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field at the start of the second enhancement of the Fe/O ratio. We propose an interpretation of the particle event where observed interplanetary particle fluxes are associated with two different particle sources near the Sun and in interplanetary space. We suggest that heavy ions observed during the first period of the Fe/O enhancement were released when a coronal shock reached a magnetic foot point connected to 1 AU. The second maximum of Fe/O occurred when spacecraft encountered Fe-rich material stored in magnetic field flux tubes early in the event and was possibly reaccelerated by the interplanetary shock.  相似文献

A model is presented which shows that large numbers of energetic electrons (0.3-> 10 MeV) and protons (1–30 MeV) can be stored in the solar corona at altitudes around 3 × 105 km for periods in excess of 5 days. Specific reference is made to the time period July 6–16 1968 as an excellent example of energetic solar particle storage. Time histories of interplanetary charged particle intensities observed by the IMP-4 and Pioneer 8 satellites are used to substantiate this contention. Detailed reference is also made to solar X-ray, optical and radio data obtained during the period in question, in addition to interplanetary magnetometer data. This model provides a unique solution to many hitherto unexplained solar particle events, and can also account for the lack of prompt particle emission from certain large solar flares recorded in the past.  相似文献

We present Very Large Array observations at wavelengths of 2, 3.5, 6, and 20 cm, of angular broadening of radio sources due to the solar wind in the region 2–16 solar radii. Angular broadening is anisotropic with axial ratios in the range 2–16. Larger axial ratios are observed preferentially at smaller solar distances. Assuming that anisotropy is due to scattering blobs elongated along magnetic field lines, the distribution of position angles of the elliptically broadened images indicates that the field lines are non-radial even at the largest heliocentric distances observed here. At 5R⊙, the major axis scattering angle is ∼ 0.7" atλ= 6 cm and it varies with heliocentric distance asR -1.6. The level of turbulence, characterized by the wave structure function at a scale of 10 km along the major axis, normalized toλ = 20 cm, has a value 20 ± 7 at 5R⊙and varies with heliocentric distance asR -3. Comparison with earlier resu lts suggest that the level of turbulence is higher during solar maximum. Assuming a power-law spectrum of electron density fluctuations, the fitted spectral exponents have values in the range 2.8–3.4 for scale sizes between 2–35 km. The data suggests temporal fluctuations (of up to 10%) in the spectral exponent on a time scale of a few tens of minutes. The observed structure functions at different solar distances do not show any evidence for an inner scale; the upper limits are l k m at 2R⊙ and 4 km at 13R⊙. These upper limits are in conflict with earlier determinations and may suggest a reduced inner scale during solar maximum.  相似文献

The RHESSI high-resolution spectrometer detected γ-ray lines and continuum emitted by the Earth's atmosphere during impact of solar energetic particles in the south polar region from 16:00–17:00 UT on 21 April 2002. The particle intensity at the time of the observation was a factor of 10–100 weaker than previous events when gamma-rays were detected by other instruments. This is the first high-resolution observation of atmospheric gamma-ray lines produced by solar energetic particles. De-excitation lines were resolved that, in part, come from 14N at 728, 1635, 2313, 3890, and 5106 keV, and the 12C spallation product at ∼ 4439 keV. Other unresolved lines were also detected. We provide best-fit line energies and widths and compare these with moderate resolution measurements by SMM of lines from an SEP event and with high-resolution measurements made by HEAO 3 of lines excited by cosmic rays. We use line ratios to estimate the spectrum of solar energetic particles that impacted the atmosphere. The 21 April spectrum was significantly harder than that measured by SMM during the 20 October 1989 shock event; it is comparable to that measured by Yohkoh on 15 July 2000. This is consistent with measurements of 10–50 MeV protons made in space at the time of the γ-ray observations.  相似文献

We devised a new method, which we call the running-segment method, to achieve high-resolution time series of indices of solar rotation for determining the latitude dependence of the differential rotation by a least-squares fitting of the daily translation of positions of sunspot groups during a fixed time segment of 11 years. The segment is moved by an amount of one year to determine the differential profile of the next point of time. Time of the determined rotation data is defined by an arithmetic mean of the beginning and ending years of the segment. The rotation underwent an acceleration from 1948 to 1974 and a deceleration from 1974 to 1987. We found that the time profile of the indexM, the angular momentum surface layer density defined by integration of the angular momentum volume density over the whole surface, follows almost exactly the time profile of the 11-year running mean of the yearly mean of the sunspot relative number with a delay time of about 20 years. The acceleration (deceleration) phase corresponds to the ascending (descending) phase of amplitude of the 11-year solar cycle of cycle 16 (19) to cycle 19 (20) with a delay time of about 20 years. The cycles 15–20 correspond to the 55-year grand cycle V of the 11-year cycle. The delay time of about 20 years agrees well with the delay time predicted by a nonlinear dynamo theory of the solar cycle for driving the 55-year modulation of the 11-year solar cycle. The agreement suggests that the Lorentz force of the magnetic field of the solar cycle during grand cycle V drives the solar rotation modulation from 1948 to 1987 and that the force needed about 20 years to modify the rotation during 1943–1992.  相似文献

Monthly cosmic-ray data from Inuvik (0.16 GV) and Climax (2.96 GV) Neutron Monitor stations has been studied with the aid of solar activity parameters for the time period 1947–1995. Systematic differences in the overall shape of successive 11-year modulation cycles and similarities in the alternate 11-year cycles seem to be related to the polarity reversals of the polar magnetic field of the Sun. This suggests a possible effectiveness of the Hale cycle during even and odd solar activity cycles. Our results can be understood in terms of open and closed models of the heliosphere. Positive north pole of the Sun leads to open heliosphere where particles reach the Earth more easily when their access route is by the heliospheric oolar regions (even cycles) than when they gain access along the current sheet (odd cycles). In this case as the route of access becomes longer due to the waviness of the neutral sheet, the hysteresis effect of cosmic-rays is also longer. This interpretation is explained in terms of different contributions of convection, diffusion and drift mechanisms to the whole modulation process influencing cosmic-ray transport in the heliosphere.  相似文献
