A generalized turbulent diffusion model has been developed which evaluates the time rate of growth of a simulated cloud of particles released into a turbulent (i.e. diffusive) atmosphere. The general model, in the form of second-order differential equations, computes the three-dimensional size of the cloud as a function of time. Parameters which influence the cloud growth, and which are accounted for in the model equations, are: (1) length scales and velocity magnitudes of the diffusive field, (2) rate of viscous dissipation , (3) vertical stability as characterized by the relative adiabatic lapse rate (1/T)(g/C p +T/z), and (4) vertical shear in the mean horizontal winds , and , for a given height and of spatial extent equal to that of the diffusing cloud. Sample results for near ground level and for upper stratospheric heights are given. For the atmospheric boundary layer case, the diffusive field is microscale turbulence. In the upper stratospheric case it is considered to be a field of highly interactive and dispersive gravity waves.

The measurements of the critical frequencies of the ionospheric F2 layer based on vertical radiosounding, which was performed with a CADI digital ionosonde at the Voeykovo magnetic–ionospheric observatory in February 2013, have been considered. The observations have been compared with the upper atmosphere numerical model (UAM) data for three days that differ in the amplitude and the character of solar and magnetic activity and correspond to quiet and moderately disturbed states of the ionosphere. The work was performed in order to improve the methods for determining the ionospheric state by vertical sounding ionograms. The time variations in the F2 layer critical frequency, electric field vector zonal component, and thermospheric wind velocity meridional component have been analyzed. Calculations were performed with three UAM variants. The UAM version providing the best agreement with the CADI ionosonde data was the version in which the neutral temperature, neutral composition, and pressure gradients are calculated according to the MSIS empirical model and the horizontal neutral wind velocity is determined by the equation of motion with pressure gradients from MSIS. The calculated values corresponded to the measurements, except those for the evening, because the electron density at the ionospheric F2 layer maximum depends more strongly on electric fields and thermospheric wind velocities during this period. Thus, the indicated UAM version with the above limitations can be used to determine the state of the subauroral ionosphere.

HF radar measurements were performed near the magnetic equator in Africa (Korhogo 9°2463N–5°3738W) during the International Equatorial Electrojet Year (1993–1994). The HF radar is a high–resolution zenithal radar. It gives ionograms, Doppler spectra and echo parameters at several frequencies simultaneously. This paper presents a comparative study of the daytime ionospheric structures observed during 3 days selected as representative of different magnetic conditions, given by magnetometer measurements. Broad Doppler spectra, large echo width, and amplitude fluctuations revealed small-scale instability processes up to the F-region peak. The height variations measured at different altitudes showed gravity waves and larger-scale disturbances related to solar daytime influence and equatorial electric fields. The possibility of retrieving the ionospheric electric fields from these Doppler or height variation measurements in the presence of the other possible equatorial ionospheric disturbances is discussed.

Measurements of atmospheric electrical and meteorological parameters during different meteorological conditions indicate that the use of the conception Fair weather condition in atmospheric electricity is discussable. Fair weather contains a very broad stability range, from very unstable to strong stable stability of the atmosphere. For turbulent fluctuations of the electric parameters (the most local variations) the variations are determined by the micrometeorological processes for all stability conditions. These fluctuations represent frequencies greater than one period per four minutes. For lower frequencies (less local variations), however, the stability dependency increases. During stable conditions the electric field and vertical current density were nearly wholly influenced by the charges and their transfer in the nearest layer. During near-neutral and unstable conditions the electrical parameters were influenced by more separated sources. Measurements of how well Ohm's law was fulfilled also indicate the difficulties by using the conception fair weather. The measurements also indicate the importance of taking the convection current density into consideration in studies of the electric charge transfer in the atmosphere. In the more large scale of variations measurements of the electric field by radiosoundings show that 88% of the ionospheric potential is derived from the troposphere, where the meteorological processes are of fundamental character for the atmospheric electrical phenomena. The relatively great stability of the diurnal variation of the large scale or global electric field is also valid for the meteorological processes in this scale of variations.

The electromagnetic field due to ionospheric currents has to be known when evaluating space weather effects at the earths surface. Forecasting methods of these effects, which include geomagnetically induced currents in technological systems, are being developed. Such applications are time-critical, so the calculation techniques of the electromagnetic field have to be fast but still accurate. The contribution of secondary sources induced within the earth leads to complicated integral formulas for the field at the earths surface with a time-consuming computation. An approximate method of calculation based on replacing the earth contribution by an image source having mathematically a complex location results in closed-form expressions and in a much faster computation. In this paper we extend the complex image method (CIM) to the case of a more realistic electrojet system consisting of a horizontal line current filament with vertical currents at its ends above a layered earth. To be able to utilize previous CIM results, we prove that the current system can be replaced by a purely horizontal current distribution which is equivalent regarding the total (= primary + induced) magnetic field and the total horizontal electric field at the earths surface. The latter result is new. Numerical calculations demonstrate that CIM is very accurate and several magnitudes faster than the exact conventional approach.

The Drude law (molecular refraction) for the temperature radiation in a monoatomic model of the Earth's mantle is derived. The considerations are based on the Lorentz electron theory of solids. The characteristic frequency (or eigenfrequency) of independent electron oscillators (in energy units, ) is identified with the band gapE G of a solid. The only assumption is that solid material related to the Earth's mantle has the mean atomic weight A21 g/mole, and its energy gap (E G) is about 9 eV. In this case the value of molecular refraction (in cm3/g) is (n 2–1)/=0.5160.52, where andn are the density and the refractive index at wavelength D=0.5893 m (sodium light), respectively. The average molecular refraction of important silicate and oxide minerals with A21, obtained byAnderson andSchreiber (1965) from laboratory data, is , where denotes the mean arithmetic value calculated from three principal refractive indices of crystal. For the rock-forming minerals with 19A<24 g/mole the new relation was found byAnderson (1975).

Summary The kinematics of magnetic field lines in a plasma can be studies by means of the mathematical methods used in the kinematics of vorticity. Starting withFaraday's law of induction for moving circuits the following results can be derived: a necessary and sufficient condition that the magnetic field lines remain material lines; a formula describing the convection and diffusion of the magnetic field lines in a plasma, which is analogous to the «basic vorticity formula» ofC. Truesdell; general theorems containing an arbitrary tensor field of any order, which are analogous to general vorticity theorems ofH. Ertel, especially a «commutation formula» corresponding to the «Euler-Ertel commutation formula» for circulation preserving motions. Given an isentropic ideal plasma it follows that ( denoting the density, the magnetic induction,s the specific entropy, andd/dt the material time derivative).

Summary Recently excellent archeomagnetic data sequences have been bublished from several parts of the world. Using these sequences, an attempt is made to trace the secular variation of the virtual geomagnetic dipole field characterized by the three first order spherical harmonic coefficients . The archeomagnetic data (declination, inclination and total intensity) are transformed into the first order coefficients mentioned by a simple mathematical method. The secular variations of these coefficients, however, contain both dipole and non-dipole components. The separation of these is also attempted.Paper presented at the IAGA Symposium, Madrid, September 1969.

Summary The mechanism of beating of Pc3 type pulsations is studied. Using the method of numerical computation of a sonagram (the method of frequency-time analysis) a set of samples of pulsations from the Budkov Observatory is treated (1968–1969) mostly at K-indices equal to 2–3. By comparing f–t diagrams with the spectra of the samples an attempt has been made at interpreting the beating as a superposition of the frequency components, contained in the pulsation signal. In most observed cases it is possible to determine two close frequencies, the difference of which is on the average =5.4 mHz. The average carrier frequency of the samples was =37.6 mHz, and the average frequency of the beating =2.7 mHz. The interval of observed values of fB amounted to 1–5 mHz. A tendency was observed for fB to increase with increasing degree of disturbance of the geomagnetic field.

Current theories of F-layer storms are discussed using numerical simulations with the Upper Atmosphere Model, a global self-consistent, time dependent numerical model of the thermosphere-ionosphere-plasmasphere-magnetosphere system including electrodynamical coupling effects. A case study of a moderate geomagnetic storm at low solar activity during the northern winter solstice exemplifies the complex storm phenomena. The study focuses on positive ionospheric storm effects in relation to thermospheric disturbances in general and thermospheric composition changes in particular. It investigates the dynamical effects of both neutral meridional winds and electric fields caused by the disturbance dynamo effect. The penetration of short-time electric fields of magnetospheric origin during storm intensification phases is shown for the first time in this model study. Comparisons of the calculated thermospheric composition changes with satellite observations of AE-C and ESRO-4 during storm time show a good agreement. The empirical MSISE90 model, however, is less consistent with the simulations. It does not show the equatorward propagation of the disturbances and predicts that they have a gentler latitudinal gradient. Both theoretical and experimental data reveal that although the ratio of [O]/[N2] at high latitudes decreases significantly during the magnetic storm compared with the quiet time level, at mid to low latitudes it does not increase (at fixed altitudes) above the quiet reference level. Meanwhile, the ionospheric storm is positive there. We conclude that the positive phase of the ionospheric storm is mainly due to uplifting of ionospheric F2-region plasma at mid latitudes and its equatorward movement at low latitudes along geomagnetic field lines caused by large-scale neutral wind circulation and the passage of travelling atmospheric disturbances (TADs). The calculated zonal electric field disturbances also help to create the positive ionospheric disturbances both at middle and low latitudes. Minor contributions arise from the general density enhancement of all constituents during geomagnetic storms, which favours ion production processes above ion losses at fixed height under day-light conditions.

Regular measurements of the atmospheric electric field made at Vostok Station (φ=78.45°S; λ=106.87°E, elevation 3500 m) in Antarctica demonstrate that extremely intense electric fields (1000–5000 V/m) can be observed during snow storms. Usually the measured value of the atmospheric electric field at Vostok is about 100–250 V/m during periods with “fair weather” conditions. Actual relation between near-surface electric fields and ionospheric electric fields remain to be a controversial problem. Some people claimed that these intense electric fields produced by snowstorms or appearing before strong earthquakes can re-distribute electric potential in the ionosphere at the heights up to 300 km. We investigated interrelation between the atmospheric and ionospheric electric fields by both experimental and theoretical methods. Our conclusion is that increased near-surface atmospheric electric fields do not contribute notably to distribution of ionospheric electric potential.

The method of characteristics for obtaining spatial distributions of ionospheric electrodynamic parameters from ground-based spatial observations of the ground magnetic disturbance and the ionospheric electric field is presented in spherical geometry. The method includes tools for separation of the external magnetic disturbance, its continuation to the ionosphere, and calculation of ionospheric equivalent currents. Based on these and the measured electric field distribution, the ionospheric Hall conductance is calculated as the primary output of the method. By estimating the Hall- to-Pedersen conductance ratio distribution, the remaining ionospheric electrodynamic parameters are inferred. The method does not assume = 0 to allow to study time-dependent situations. The application of this method to a Harang discontinuity (HD) situation on 27 October 1977, 17:39 UT, reveals the following: (1) The conductances at and north of the HD are clearly reduced as compared to the eastern electrojet region. (2) Plasma flow across the HD is observed, but almost all horizontal current is diverted into upward-flowing field-aligned currents (FACs) there. (3) The FACs connected to the Hall currents form a latitudinally aligned sheet with a magnitude peak between the electrically and magnetically defined HD, where break-up arcs are often observed. Their magnitude is larger than that of the more uniformly distributed FACs connected to the Pedersen currents. They also cause the southward shift of the magnetically defined HD with respect to the electrically defined one. (4) A tilt of the HD with respect to geomagnetic latitude as proposed by an earlier study on the same event, which used composite vector plot technique, and by statistical studies, is not observed in our single time-step analysis. Also at: Finnish Meteorological Institute, Geophysical Research, P.O. We present the characteristics of the response of equatorial ionospheric zonal electric field and F-region plasma density to the asymmetric ring current intensifications that occurred in succession on 16 December 1991, corresponding to the STEP/EITS-2 campaign period. The study is based on high-time-resolution (1-min) data of asymmetic ring current indices, ASY(H/D) and F-region vertical plasma drift, Vz measurements at Kodaikanal (10.25°N; 77.5°E; dip 4°), India and quarter-hourly ionosonde data of For-taleza (4°S; 322°E; dip -9°), Brazil. It is shown that short-lived disturbances in F-layer vertical plasma drift, Vz and height (hF/hpF2) indicative of westward and eastward electric fields prevail simultaneously in the dusk (18–21 LT) and predawn (02–05 LT) sectors, respectively, in association with the decay phase of asymmetic ring current events. Electric fields of opposite polarity do also seem to manifest at these local times, particularly in the early-morning sector in conjunction with the intensification of the asymmetric ring current. At a given location, electric field disturbances associated with individual asymmetric ring current events are thus bipolar in nature, with fields of opposite polarity during the growth and decay phases. The nature and polarity structure of the observed electric field disturbances are in agreement with the theoretical/model predictions of prompt penetration of high-latitude electric fields to the equatorial region. On sabbatical leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, India

The powerspectrum of internal motions in the western baltic between the periods 0.3 and 60 minutes. Part 1: Interpretation of the wavelike component of the internal unrest in the sea
Summary The powerspectra of the internal unrest in the sea show marked peaks in the range of periods between 0.3 and 60 minutes. An interpretation of these phenomena is given in terms of internal waves for a specific example obtained from short periodic current and density variations in the Kieler Bucht. The numerical calculations for an observed period of two minutes show an important influence of the vertical distribution of the current on the wavelength. In the case of the wavelength amounts to about 70 m, where as in the case of the length is about 85 m, assuming a depth of the sea of 23.5 m. The computed oscillations represent improper internal waves (W. Krauß [1966]). Interpretation by internal boundary waves yields a wavelength of 86 m, which is slightly different only from those of the first mode of internal waves in the case of continuously varying .By a theoretical investigation it is shown that short periodic internal waves may be caused by local initial perturbations (for instance by sudden variations of pressure at the surface). The solution of the problem describes slowly decreasing standing internal waves, which are generated within the area upon which short-dated initial accelerations have acted. At the same time a train of progressive waves is developed in the environment travelling away from the centre of the excitation. The amplitudes of these waves diminish with increasing distance from the origin. The periods of the computed oscillations yield higher values than the Väisäläperiod belonging to an exponential stratification. The variability in these periods is caused by variations in depth, by variations in stability, and by changes in the horizontal dimensions of the area of initial perturbation. This dependence is similar to that of cellular oscillations of stability.

Variations in horizontal and vertical components of the telluric field are studied within the range of periods from a few tens of seconds to diurnal and longer variations. Variations caused by an external ionospheric source are used for studying the geoelectric heterogeneity of the medium. For this purpose, an electric tipper is introduced by analogy with the geomagnetic field and its frequency response is examined. The magnetotelluric impedance is studied using data of remote geomagnetic observatories. According to the data of monitoring of the electric tipper and magnetotelluric impedance, anomalous effects are revealed that can be related to earthquakes with K ≥ 12. A method is developed for the extraction of electric field anomalies produced by intraterrestrial electric sources.

Ionospheric space weather effects can degrade the performance of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), i.e. their accuracy, reliability and availability. However, well established ground based and innovative space based GNSS measurements offer the unique chance for a permanent monitoring of the electron density structure of the global ionosphere–plasmasphere system. In this paper we review various types of perturbations in the ionospheric plasma density and distribution. In order to analyze these space weather effects we use 30 s sampled measurements provided by the global GPS ground tracking network of the IGS. Furthermore, to get a more comprehensive view on the perturbations analyzed also are simultaneously obtained GPS measurements onboard the LEO satellite CHAMP (challenging minisatellite payload). Whereas the ground based measurements show strong horizontal redistribution of plasma during ionospheric storms, the space-borne measurements indicate a severe vertical redistribution of the ionospheric plasma during the selected events. The role of the various dynamical forces such as meridional winds and electric fields is also discussed.
