A reexamination of the sequences of planktonic foraminifers and calcareous nannoplankton in the Plio-Pleistocene sediments beneath the Louisiana continental shelf has been undertaken in order to modernize correlation schemes that were established 10–20 y.a. As a consequence, it can be shown that (1) a new correlation of marine micropaleontological and continental glacial events is necessary; (2) the Gulf Coast faunal events can be reliably correlated with those in the type Italian Pleistocene section and in the deep-sea cores; (3) it is becoming increasingly evident that it is invalid to correlate the Plio-Pleistocene boundary, as defined by paleontology, with a climatically defined boundary.  相似文献

Areas of the U.S. Gulf Coast, both onshore and offshore, are among the petroliferous regions of the United States. In offshore Louisiana and Texas, most oil and gas is associated with structurally controlled traps on the crest or flanks of domes created by the diapiric movement of salt. These structures can be detected and mapped by seismic techniques that directly indicate favorable prospective areas. The characteristics of seismically defined structures provide information in advance of drilling about the probable size of reservoirs contained within these structures. Simple statistical relationships can be determined between the size, shape, and other attributes of structures detected by seismic mapping and the presence and size of petroleum and natural gas reservoirs. Gulf Coast OCS lease tracts presently are evaluated by the U.S. government using a Monte Carlo simulation procedure adapted from reservoir analysis. Specification of the parameters of the Monte Carlo model are obtained subjectively in advance of drilling and thus are highly uncertain. Comparisons of predrill predictions with postdiscovery reservoir evaluations show very low correlations. In contrast, predrill predictions based on regressions between seismic structural properties and reservoir volumes show highly significant correlations. In addition, statistical analysis of seismic structure is much simpler than the Monte Carlo procedure, and can be applied rapidly and inexpensively. A statistical analysis of the “Pleistocene Trend” of offshore Louisiana and Texas, an area of about 3 million acres, yielded results that are sufficiently encouraging to suggest that similar evaluations be made of the remaining Gulf Coast OCS and of OCS regions off of other coasts of the United States.  相似文献

Salt diapirs contain a few percent of anhydrite that accumulated as residue to form anhydrite cap rocks during salt dissolutions. Reported 87Sr/86Sr ratios of these salt-hosted and cap rock anhydrites in the Gulf Coast, U.S.A., indicate their derivation from Middle Jurassic seawater. However, a much wider range of 87Sr/86Sr ratios, incorporating a highly radiogenic component in addition to the Middle Jurassic component, has been found in several Gulf Coast salt domes. This wide range of 87Sr/86Sr ratios of anhydrite within the salt stocks records Sr contributions from both marine water and formation water that has equilibrated with siliciclastics. During cap rock formation this anhydrite either recrystallized in the presence of, or was cemented by, a low-Sr fluid with a Late Cretaceous seawter-type Sr isotope ratio or simply lost Sr during recrystallization. Later, the cap rock was invaded by warm saline brines with high Sr isotope ratios from which barite and metal sulfides were precipitated. Subsequently, low-salinity water hydrated part of the anhydrite bringing to six the total number of fluids that interacted througout the history of salt dome and cap rock growth. The progenitor of these salt diapirs, the Louann Formation, is generally thought to have formed from marine water evaporated to halite and, rarely, higher evaporite facies. Salt domes in the East Texas, North Louisiana, and Mississippi Salt Basins have 87Sr/86Sr and δ34S values that corroborate a Mid-Jurassic age for the mother salt. However, salt domes in the Houston and Rio Grande Embayments of the Gulf Coast Basin have 87Sr/86Sr ration ranging to values higher than both Middle Jurassic seawater and all Rb-free marine Phanerozoic rocks. These anomalous 87Sr/86Sr ratios are probably derived from radiogenic Sr-bearing fluids that equilibrated with siliciclastic rocks and invaded the salt either prior to, or during, diapirism. Potential sources of the radiogenic 87Sr component include clay and/or feldspar (located either in older units beneath the Louann Formation or younger units flanking the salt diapirs) and K-salts within the Louann evaporites. Because partial Sr exchange in anhydrite had to take place in a fluid medium, admittance of radiogenic 87Sr-bearing fluids into the salt may have led to diapirism by lowering the shear strength of the crystalline salt. The slight number of anomalous 87Sr/86Sr values in the interior basins indicates that anomalous values are related to areally discrete structural or stratigraphic controls that affected only the Gulf Coast Basin.  相似文献

A large number of specimens of Seymouriamorph amphibian, family Discosauriscidae, were collected from the south slopes of the Kuramanskiy Khrebet, Mt. Sarytaypan, 10 km northeast of the settlement of Adrasman, Tadzhik S.S.R. Deposits yielding the fossils consist of about 70 m of effusive sedimentary rocks, the top third being tuffs, tuff sandstones, and tuff breccias, and the remainder being alternating fine-grained sandstones, argillites, and siltstones, of gray, greenish, pink, and black colors. The beds overlie 800 m of tuff lavas and tuff breccias and are overlain by 200 m of-tuff breccias. Fossil leaves are abundant in the lower half of the beds in all lithologic types, but the vertebrates are confined to about 1 m of adjoining layers of fine-grained gray to pink sandstone, and almost black argillite. The fossils consist of complete impressions of skeletons, which will yield much anatomical information. Two genera are represented, the most abundant referrable to the Central European form Discosauriscus. The other is related to the European Leptoverpeton but may be new. These specimens permit correlation of the Sarytaypan deposits with Lower Permian' bedsgqn Czechoslovakia and Germany. Larval forms are by far the most abundant, but the presence of adults affords a reliable comparison of growth stages. New and detailed information of the development of the spinal column will also be forthcoming from further study of the growth stages. Most sedimentary basins contain saline pore water. Saline formation waters can form during burial diagenesis as the result of normal processes of water/rock interaction involving incongruent halite dissolution, bittern salt destruction, and albitization of detrital plagioclase. The kinds of Na-Ca-Cl saline formation waters typical of sedimentary basins can also result from modification of surficial brines formed by the precipitation of NaCl from evaporated seawater. As the porosity of rocks is reduced during burial, discharge of saline formation waters contributes to crustal chloride cycling, and helps explain riverine chloride loads. During burial, the dissolution of metastable detrital minerals derived from crustal rocks in corrosive, saline water transfers incompatible elements such as Li and B from the igneous crust to the sedimentary crust. Similarly, albitization transfers Ca from the crustal silicate (igneous) mineral reservoir to the crustal carbonate and aqueous (sedimentary) reservoirs. Metamorphism and then melting of albite-enriched rocks accounts for the elevated sodium contents of igneous rocks relative to sedimentary rocks. In this way average sediments have become enriched through time in Ca, Cl, Br, S, Li, and B, and depleted in Na relative to average igneous crust.  相似文献

The Aral Sea has been shrinking since 1963 due to extensive irrigation and the corresponding decline in the river water inflow. Understanding of the current hydrological situation demands an improved understanding of the surface water/groundwater dynamics in the region. 222Rn and 226Ra measurements can be used to trace groundwater discharge into surface waters. Data of these radiometric parameters were not previously available for the study region. We determined 222Rn activities after liquid phase extraction using Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC) with peak-length discrimination and analyzed 226Ra concentrations in different water compartments of the Amu Darya Delta (surface waters, unconfined groundwater, artesian water, and water profiles from the closed Large Aral Sea (western basin).The water samples comprise a salinity range between 1 and 263 g/l. The seasonal dynamics of solid/water interaction under an arid climate regime force the hydrochemical evolution of the unconfined groundwater in the Amu Darya Delta to high-salinity Na(Mg)Cl(SO4) water types. The dissolved radium concentrations in the waters were mostly very low due to mineral over-saturation, extensive co-precipitation of radium and adsorption of radium on coexisting solid substrates.The analysis of very low 226Ra concentrations (<10 ppq) at remote study sites is a challenge. We used the water samples to test and improve different analytical methods. In particular, we modified a procedure developed for the α-spectrometric determination of 226Ra after solid phase extraction of radium using 3M Empore™ High Performance Extraction Disks (Purkl, 2002) for the analysis of the radionuclide using an ICP sector field mass spectrometer. The 226Ra concentration of 17 unconfined groundwater samples ranged between 0.2 and 5 ppq, and that of 28 artesian waters between <0.2 and 13 ppq. The ICP-MS results conformed satisfactorily to analytical results based on γ-measurements of the 222Rn ingrowth after purging and trapping on super-cooled charcoal. The 226Ra concentrations were positively correlated with the salinity and the dissolved NaCl concentrations. The occurrence of unusually high 226Ra activities is explained by radium release from adsorption sites with increasing salinity. The inferred spatial variability of 222Rn in the Aral Sea and of 222Rn and 226Ra in the groundwater of the Amu Darya Delta is discussed in the context of our own previous hydrochemical studies in the study sites. Relatively low 222Rn activities in the unconfined GW (1–9.5 Bq/l) indicate the alluvial sediments hosting the GW to be a low-238U(226Ra) substrate. Positive correlations between U and 226Ra, and U and 222Rn are likely related to locally deposited Fe(Mn)OOH precipitates. The 222Rn activity of the GW, however, distinctly exceeds the 222Rn concentration in the Aral Sea (10 mBq/l), in principle, making 222Rn a sensitive tracer for the inflow of GW. The high water volume of the Large Aral Sea and wind induced mixing of its water body, however, hamper the detection of local groundwater inflow.  相似文献

The concentrations of uranium. 226Ra and 222Rn were determined in 308 drilled and 58 dug wells in the Helsinki region. The study area was about 400 km2 and geologically highly variable, with granites, amphibolites and migmatites the dominant rocks. The radioactivity of water in the dug wells was on a “normal” level, but in numerous drilled wells it was anomalously high. In 14 drilled wells the concentration of uranium exceeded 1000 μg/l, the highest concentration being 14,870 μg/l. For 222Rn the maximum concentration was 880,000 pCi/l. The 226Ra228Ra and 230Th232Th activity ratios showed the isotopes of the uranium series to be dominant in the study area. A state of disequilibrium between 238U and 234U was very common in the samples. The 234U238U activity ratios varied in the range 1.0–4.0 regardless of the amount of uranium in the water. The conclusion can be drawn from the isotopic data that the high radioactivity of water is in some cases caused by primary uranium mineralizations, but mostly by uranium deposited in fissures of the bedrock. 对天津,河北和辽宁地区沿渤海海岸沉积物进行了粒度,重金属、As、P和N的分析表明,在表层沉积物(<62.5μm粒级)中重金属和As的含量变化很大。在天津地区Hg、Cd、Cu、Ni、Pb、Zn、Cr、Mn和As的平均含量(μg/g)分别为0.15、0.19、31.6、46.5、29、112、82、1008和16.2,辽宁地区它们分别为0.08、0.44、24.2、34.1、29、96、64.4、976和13.1,在河北地区它们分别为0.03、0.13、20.3、28.7、22.7、58、63、888和8.5。天津地区Hg、Cr和As的高值(μg/g)为0.26~0.35,83.4~94.9和23.3。河北省个别地区Hg、Cd和Zn含量(μg/g)高达3.12,2.01和602。上述结果反映渤海沿岸沉积物遭受了不同程度的重金属和As的污染。天津环渤海地区表层沉积物中总氮(TN)和总磷(TP)的含量(mg/g)分别为0.7~1.5和0.7~1.0,它们在辽宁地区分别为0.5~1.0和0.5~0.7,在河北地区一般为0.6~1.2和0.5~0.8。但是,在河北个别明显遭受Hg、Cd和Zn污染地区的沉积物中TN和TP含量(mg/g)分别高达6.6和1.5,需要研究它对底栖生物的危害。  相似文献

 Suspended sediment transport effectiveness was examined near the mouths of three large impounded rivers (Rio Grande, Brazos, and Pearl Rivers) in differing precipitation regimes in the U.S. Gulf Coastal Plain. Magnitude and frequency analysis of suspended sediment transport was performed by examining the effectiveness of both discharge and time in transporting suspended sediment. Bivariate plots of discharge with infrequent values of silt/clay and sand provide an insight into the relative proportion of coarse-versus fine-grained sediment transport for the three rivers. Despite the aridity of the Rio Grande and Brazos drainage basins, which is often associated with infrequent or episodic transport of sediment, the duration of the effective discharge is similar to humid basins described in the literature. The majority of sediment transport occurs during the moderate discharge events, having a duration of 2.4%, 1.5%, and 4.4% for the Rio Grande, Brazos, and Pearl Rivers, respectively. This may be due to the influence of scale or the influence of upstream dams and reservoirs on discharge and sediment transport. Findings from this research suggest that magnitude and frequency analysis of discharge and suspended sediment near the mouths of large rivers may provide a useful framework for understanding the timing and delivery of riverine sediments to the nearshore coastal environment from rivers draining a range of geologic and climatic settings. A very interesting and informative paper on widespread occurrence of a thermal hydrosphere. Geothermal power uses are discussed. Distribution of heated waters, some up to 150° C is discussed in considerable detail, especially with reference to possible power utilization of the geothermal energy. Seven hydrothermal regions of the U.S.S.R. are discussed and delineated. Chemical quality of waters is referred to. The deinocephalian pelvic girdle, of general pelycosaurian structure, is useful in systematic diagnosis. In primitive Russian deinocephalians, two contrasting pelvic patterns are recognized, one light, thin-walled, narrow, and of V-shaped cross-section, and the other massive, thick-walled, wide, and of U-shaped cross-section. The former is characteristic of two families of lightly- built, mobile land carnivores, the Eotitanosuchidae and the Brithopodidae. The Eotitanosuchidae are more primitive and pelycosaur-like, while the Brithopodidae show more variation, and specializations of large size, shallower acetabulum (related to mobility?), and re-enforcement of a weak pubic symphysis by additional processes. The massive type of pelvis characterizes large, heavily built herbivorous animals of the family Estemmenosuchidae. In general pelvic structure, the Estemmenosuchidae resemble the South African anteosaurs and tapinocephalians and the Russian tapinocephalians. In detail, however, they show a more primitive stage of evolution, overlaid by characteristic specializations which relate them more closely to the advanced Russian forms than to those of South Africa. Three new genera are erected, Biarmosaurus, fam. Eotitanosuchidae; Chthomaloporus, fam. Brithopodidae; and Molybdopygus, fam. Estemmenosuchidae. One specimen formerly referred to Deuterosaurus Yefremov 1954, and five formerly included in the type of Brithopus Yefremov 1954 are referred to Molybdopygus. The more primitive deinocephalians are from Yezhovo in the Ocher District, Perm Province, while more advanced forms are from Isheyevo, in Tataria, where-therocephalians and other South African elements are also found. It is therefore concluded that the Ochersk beds are older than those of Isheyevo and must be dated to zone I of Yefremov's system. — N. Hotton III.  相似文献

南岭成矿带是我国乃至世界上最重要的铋矿产地。该区铋矿床的研究尽管起步较早,但进展缓慢,其产出特征及成因认识仍很薄弱。本文通过系统搜集、综合分析矿山基础地质资料和前人研究成果,在时空分布规律、含铋矿物类型、矿床成因等方面取得一定认识。南岭成矿带有湘南、粤北、崇-余-犹、于-赣等四大铋矿聚集区;铋矿床类型主要有石英脉型、矽卡岩型、蚀变花岗岩型、破碎带型、充填交代型、斑岩型等六种,以石英脉型铋矿数量最多,矽卡岩型铋矿储量最大;铋矿床形成年龄介于170~150 Ma之间,与相关花岗岩体侵入年龄相近。目前已发现含铋矿物30余种,涵盖自然元素、硫化物、含硫盐、氧化物、含氧盐、碲化物、铋化物、氟化物等类型,以铋的含硫盐最为丰富。含铋矿物组合在不同类型铋矿床中有所差异,但一般产在矿脉中下部,且由浅至深矿物中硫的原子百分比呈下降的趋势。南岭铋矿床的主要成矿物质来自花岗岩浆,在花岗岩浆形成过程中有地幔流体的加入,成矿中晚阶段大气降水的混入可能是铋大量沉淀的重要因素。  相似文献

Principal component analysis has been applied for source identification and to assess factors affecting concentration variations. In particular, this study utilizes principal component analysis (PCA) to understand groundwater geochemical characteristics in the central and southern portions of the Gulf Coast aquifer in Texas. PCA, along with exploratory data analysis and correlation analysis is applied to a spatially extensive multivariate dataset in an exploratory mode to conceptualize the geochemical evolution of groundwater. A general trend was observed in all formations of the target aquifers with over 75 % of the observed variance explained by the first four factors identified by the PCA. The first factor consisted of older water subjected to weathering reactions and was named the ionic strength index. The second factor, named the alkalinity index explained greater variance in the younger formations rather than in the older formations. The third group represented younger waters entering the aquifers from the land surface and was labeled the recharge index. The fourth group which varied between aquifers was either the hardness index or the acidity index depending on whether it represented the influences of carbonate minerals or parameters affecting the dissolution of fluoride minerals, respectively. The PCA approach was also extended to the well scale to determine and identify the geographic influences on geochemical evolution. It was found that wells located in outcrop areas and near rivers and streams had a larger influence on the factors suggesting the importance of surface water–groundwater interactions.  相似文献

The spatial scale of habitat selection has become a prominent concept in ecology, but has received less attention in coastal ecology. In coastal marshes, broad-scale marsh types are defined by vegetation composition over thousands of hectares, water-level management is applied over hundreds of hectares, and fine-scale habitat is depicted by tens of meters. Individually, these scales are known to affect wetland fauna, but studies have not examined all three spatial scales simultaneously. We investigated wetland bird habitat selection at the three scales and compared single- and multiscale models. From 2009 to 2011, we surveyed marsh birds (i.e., Rallidae, bitterns, grebes), shorebirds, and wading birds in fresh and intermediate (oligohaline) coastal marsh in Louisiana and Texas, USA. Within each year, six repeated surveys of wintering, resident, and migratory breeding birds were conducted at >100 points (n?=?304). The results revealed fine-scale factors, primarily water depth, were consistently better predictors than marsh type or management. However, 10 of 11 species had improved models with the three scales combined. Birds with a linear association with water depth were, correspondingly, most abundant with deeper fresh marsh and permanently impounded water. Conversely, intermediate marsh had a greater abundance of shallow water species, such as king rail Rallus elegans, least bittern Ixobrychus exilis, and sora Porzana carolina. These birds had quadratic relationships with water depth or no relationship. Overall, coastal birds were influenced by multiple scales corresponding with hydrological characteristics. The effects suggest the timing of drawdowns and interannual variability in spring water levels can greatly affect wetland bird abundance.  相似文献

Selenium was determined in duplicate portions from three bottles of six U.S.G.S. standard rocks by a spect rofluorimetric procedure. The following averages, as p.p.m. Se, were obtained: PCC-1, 0.031; GSP-1, 0.088; BCR-1, 0.12; SCo-1, 0.91; MAG-1, 1.3; and SGR-1, 3.7. One-way analysis of variance of the several sets of data showed no significant differences in the selenium content among bottles of any specific rock; these samples may be accepted as homogeneous for their selenium contents by this analytical method.  相似文献
