We have used ESO’s new NIR IFS SINFONI during its Science Verification period to observe the central regions of local starburst galaxies. Being Science Verification observations, the aim was 2-fold: to demonstrate SINFONI’s capabilities while obtaining information on the nature of starclusters in starburst galaxies. The targets chosen include a number of the brighter clusters in NGC1808 and NGC253. Here we present first results.  相似文献

We present deep Near-Infrared (NIR) imaging of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies (BCDs), allowing for the first time to derive and systematize the NIR structural properties of their stellar low-surface brightness (LSB) host galaxies. Compared to optical data, NIR images, being less contamined by the extended stellar and ionized gas emission from the starburst, permit to study the LSB host galaxy closer to its center. We find that radial surface brightness profiles (SBPs) of the LSB hosts show at large radii a mostly exponential intensity distribution, in agreement with previous optical studies. At small to intermediate radii, however, the NIR data reveal an inwards flattening with respect to the outer exponential slope (`type V SBPs', Binggeli and Cameron, 1991) in the LSB component of more than one half of the sample BCDs. This result may constitute an important observational constraint to the dynamics and evolution of BCDs. We apply a modified exponential fitting function (Papaderos et al., 1996a) to parametrize and systematically study type V profiles in BCDs. A Sérsic law is found to be less suitable for studying the LSB component of BCDs, since it yields very uncertain solutions. We present results of our ongoing study of the morphology and kinematics of the ionised gas in 48 representative nearby elliptical and lenticular galaxies using the SAURON integral-field spectrograph on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. Making use of a recently developed technique, emission is detected in 75% of the galaxies. The ionised-gas distributions display varied morphologies, ranging from regular gas disks to filamentary structures. Additionally, the emission-line kinematic maps show, in general, regular motions with smooth variations in kinematic position angle. In most of the galaxies, the ionised-gas kinematics is decoupled from the stellar counterpart, but only some of them present signatures of recent accretion of gaseous material. The presence of dust is very common in our sample and is usually accompanied by gas emission. Our analysis of the [Oiii]/Hβ emission-line ratios, both across the whole sample as well as within the individual galaxies, suggests that there is no unique mechanism triggering the ionisation of the gas.  相似文献

We outline the project of multifrequency observation of five clusters of galaxies spanning a redshift between 0.05 and 0.2. The core of the project is an HI survey of clusters accomplished with the VLA in its C configuration, and complemented with GMRT data. The 21 cm imaging is being combined with optical spectroscopy and deep NIR imaging with the aim to obtain a database on galaxy evolution in the nearby universe. We choose a sample of clusters with different degrees of dynamical evolution, some containing an important population of starburst or/and post–starburst galaxies, and a hot intracluster medium with emission in X–ray. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present the results based on multiwavelength imaging observations of the prominent dust lane starburst galaxy NGC 1482 aimed to investigate the extinction properties of dust existing in the extreme environment. (B-V) colour-index map derived for the starburst galaxy NGC 1482 confirms two prominent dust lanes running along its optical major axis and are found to extend up to ∼11 kpc. In addition to the main lanes, several filamentary structures of dust originating from the central starburst are also evident. Though, the dust is surrounded by exotic environment, the average extinction curve derived for this target galaxy is compatible with the Galactic curve, with RV = 3.05, and imply that the dust grains responsible for the optical extinction in the target galaxy are not really different than the canonical grains in the Milky Way. Our estimate of total dust content of NGC 1482 assuming screening effect of dust is ∼2.7 × 105 M, and provide lower limit due to the fact that our method is not sensitive to the intermix component of dust. Comparison of the observed dust in the galaxy with that supplied by the SNe to the ISM, imply that this supply is not sufficient to account for the observed dust and hence point towards the origin of dust in this galaxy through a merger like event. Our multiband imaging analysis reveals a qualitative physical correspondence between the morphologies of the dust and Hα emission lines as well as diffuse X-ray emission in this galaxy. Spatially resolved spectral analysis of the hot gas along outflows exhibit a gradient in the temperature. Similar gradient was also noticed in the measured values of metallicity, indicating that the gas in the halo is not yet enriched. High resolution, 2-8 keV Chandra image reveals a pair of point sources in the nuclear region with their luminosities equal to 2.27 × 1039 erg s−1 and 9.34 × 1039 erg s−1, and are in excess of the Eddington-limit of 1.5 M accreting source. Spectral analysis of these sources exhibit an absorbed-power law with the hydrogen column density higher than that derived from the optical measurements.  相似文献

The molecular phase of the ISM constitutes the main source of fuel for the activity in starburst and AGNs. The physical conditions and chemical constitution of the molecular gas will change with, and respond to, the evolution of the activity. This paper includes a short discussion of the 12CO/13CO 1–0 line intensity ratio as a diagnostic tool of the molecular gas properties of luminous galaxies – paired with examples of high-resolution studies of how the line ratio varies within galaxies. A possible connection between the OH megamasers and galaxies with unusually high 12CO/13CO 1–0 line intensity ratios are also briefly discussed. The relative intensities of the dense gas tracers HNC, HCN, HCO+ and CN are a result of both chemistry and starburst evolution. The discussion on the interpretation of HNC 1–0 emission includes the importance of ion-neutral chemistry in a luminous starburst region. Finally, simple cartoon ISM models and how they can be applied to LIRGs and ULIRGs, are presented.  相似文献

The apex-sz instrument is designed for the discovery and study of galaxy clusters at mm-wavelengths using the Sunyaev Zel’dovich effect. The receiver consists of 320 superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers cooled to 250 mK with the combination of a three stage He sorption fridge and mechanical pulse tube cooler. The detectors are instrumented with a frequency domain multiplexing readout system. The receiver is mounted on the 12 m apex telescope located at 5100 m on the Atacama plateau in Chile. For the first light engineering deployment of December 2005, the receiver was configured with a 55 element wedge of the bolometers and operating in the 150 GHz atmospheric window. During the engineering run we achieved significant milestones in our instrumentation development efforts, including celestial observations with a monolithically fabricated TES bolometer array cooled with a mechanical cooler and successful implementation of a SQUID-based MHz AC-biased readout. These technology demonstrations point the way toward future large TES bolometer array instruments. Here we describe the results of this deployment and future plans for the apex-sz instrument.  相似文献

We present broad bandR and narrow band Hα emission line images of a sample of optically selected starburst galaxies from the Markarian lists. The emission line morphology is studied and global properties like luminosities, equivalent widths and star formation rates are derived. The radial distribution of Ha flux and the EW are determined using concentric aperture photometry on the emission line and the continuum images. Ha flux is generally found to peak in the nuclear region and fall off outwards. The EW is found to peak off-center in most of the cases implying that though the intensity of emission is maximum at the nucleus, the star formation activity relative to the underlying continuum often peaks away from the center in Markarian starburst galaxies.  相似文献

Molecular line emission is a useful tool for probing the highly obscured inner kpc of starburst galaxies and buried AGNs. Molecular line ratios serve as diagnostic tools of the physical conditions of the gas—but also of its chemical properties. Both provide important clues to the type and evolutionary stage of the nuclear activity. While CO emission remains the main tracer for molecular distribution and dynamics, molecules such as HCN, HNC, HCO+, CN and HC3N are useful for probing the properties of the denser (n≳104 cm−3), star-forming gas. Here I discuss current views on how line emission from these species can be interpreted in luminous galaxies. HNC, HCO+ and CN are all species that can be associated both with photon dominated regions (PDRs) in starbursts—as well as X-ray dominated regions (XDRs) associated with AGN activity. HC3N line emission may identify galaxies where the starburst is in the early stage of its evolution.  相似文献

We present preliminary results obtained from integral-field (IFU) data of the giant extragalactic Hii region NGC5461, located in a spiral arm (RA=14h03m41.4s, dec=+54°19′05″) of M101. The spatial and spectral information obtained with IFUs allows us to decompose the Hii region and analyze it at high resolution.  相似文献

We study, through 2D hydrodynamical simulations, the feedback of a starburst on the ISM of typical gas-rich dwarf galaxies. The main goal is to address the circulation of the ISM and metals following the starburst. We assume a single-phase rotating ISM in equilibrium in the galactic potential generated by a stellar disc and a spherical dark halo. The starburst is assumed to occur in a small volume in the centre of the galaxy, and it generates a mechanical power of 3.8×1039 or 3.8×1040 erg s−1 for 30 Myr. We find, in accordance with previous investigations, that the galactic wind is not very effective in removing the ISM. The metal-rich stellar ejecta, however, can be efficiently expelled from the galaxy and dispersed in the intergalactic medium.
Moreover, we find that the central region of the galaxy is always replenished with cold and dense gas a few 100 million years after the starburst, achieving the requisite for a new star formation event in ≈0.5–1 Gyr. The hydrodynamical evolution of galactic winds is thus consistent with the episodic star formation regime suggested by many chemical evolution studies.
We also discuss the X-ray emission of these galaxies and find that the observable (emission-averaged) abundance of the hot gas underestimates the real one if thermal conduction is effective. This could explain the very low hot-gas metallicities estimated in starburst galaxies.  相似文献

As a result of feedback from massive stars, via their intense winds and/or supernova explosions, massive star‐forming regions are entirely filled with hot, X‐ray emitting plasmas, which escape into the ambient ISM. As shown recently by Townsley et al. for several “extreme” cases (Carina, M17, NGC 3576, NGC 3603, 30 Dor), by way of large Chandra ACIS mosaics, extra, non‐thermal emission lines are present on top of the standard lines emitted by hot plasmas. Some of them are very close to lines characteristic of charge‐exchange reactions between the hot plasma and the cold surrounding material, suggesting that this mechanism operates on large spatial scales (several 10 pc) in star‐forming regions in general. The connection with starburst galaxies is briefly mentioned, and it is pointed out that supernovae interacting with molecular clouds may also provide a good environment to look for charge exchange processes (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. At a spatial resolution of 1″ and with spectral passbands of 0.25–0.47 Å, the chromospheric fine structure was studied with an array of 512 silicon photodiodes. The high quantum efficiency of the diodes in the near infrared allowed low noise spectroheliograms to be constructed from observations in the lines of H i, Ca ii, and He i. Magnetograms of the underlying photosphere were obtained simultaneously. Tachograms in the He 10830 Å line revealed 1″ points and elongated features that are interpreted as spicules seen against the disk. Active regions and filaments at 10830 are compared with Hα and Ca ii (8542 Å) features. Filament contrast increases with the proximity of bright plage. Twelve subflares were studied and in eight cases, 3–5″ kernels of He I emission appeared over small, growing pores or over 5″ patches of magnetic field emerging through the photosphere. All the subflares showed 10830 emission, contrary to established belief that the 10830 line goes into emission only in the largest flares. All the subflares included at least one emission kernel over regions where the photospheric magnetic field, as seen with a resolution of 1–2″, broke down into a mosaic of both polarities with 3–5″ diam. elements.  相似文献

The peculiar δ Del-variable ? Puppis (F6IIp) has been analysed on nine UV high-resolution spectra in the region of Mgii h- and k-lines. This analysis has shown: (1) The Mgii emission is present during the whole pulsation period and increases with increasing luminosity. Maximum emission fluxes seem to occur at phases 0.96–0.12. (2) The phase shift between intensity maxima of Caii and Mgii chromospheric emissions is probably about 0.26. Moreover, it seems that the phase shift between ? Pup and the Cepheid β Dor is longer for the Mgii emission (~0.44) than for the Caii one (~0.27). (3) Violet-red asymmetries are present in emission components. Moreover, the violet component K1V has always an intensity higher than the red one K1R. (4) The averaged radial velocity (RV) curve obtained from three metallic lines is in agreement with that obtained in the optical region. The RV curves of red emission and absorption components are rather similar to that of the metallic lines. Near the minimum of this RV curve, the chromospheric emissions show an intensity enhancement with a negative phase shift similar to that of light curve (~?30 deg). (5) A model with an emitting extended atmosphere around the star is proposed to explain an emission like feature in the self-reversed absorption component K3 and in K1.  相似文献

A survey towards a selection of 35 methanol maser and/or ultracompact (UC) H  ii regions, reported in Papers I and II and by Norris et al., has been conducted in the near-infrared (NIR). Out of 25 methanol maser sites surveyed, 12 are associated with a NIR counterpart. Out of 18 UC H  ii regions (8 of which overlap with maser emission), 12 are associated with a NIR counterpart. Counterparts can be confidently identified not only by the positional agreements, but also by their unusually red colours. Spectral types for the embedded stars can be unambiguously determined for six sources, all of which imply massive, ionizing stars. One of these infrared sources has methanol maser emission, but no UC H  ii region. It is possible that the maser emission associated with this source arises from a pre-UC H  ii phase of massive stellar evolution or it could be that nearly all the ultraviolet photons are absorbed by dust within the UC H  ii region. We have modelled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for some sources and find that a single blackbody can be used to estimate the stellar luminosity, but cannot represent the whole infrared SED. A two-component blackbody model and a radiative transfer model were also used to derive essential parameters of the infrared sources. The radiative transfer model also indicates which infrared sources are relatively young and which are older. Both models show that silicate absorption at 9.7 μm must be a dominant feature of these SEDs.  相似文献

Using HST and ground-based optical and NIR imaging data, we investigate whether the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy I Zw 18 possesses an extended low-surface brightness (LSB) old stellar population underlying its star-forming (SF) regions. We show that the exponential intensity decrease observed in the filamentary LSB envelope of the BCD out to 18″ (1.3 kpc at the adopted distance of 15 Mpc) is not due to an evolved stellar disc, but rather due to extended ionized gas emission. Broad-band images reveal, after subtraction of nebular line emission, a compact stellar LSB component extending slightly beyond the SF regions. This stellar host, being blue over a radius range of 5 exponential scale lengths and showing little colour contrast to the SF component, differs strikingly from the red LSB host of standard BCDs. This fact, in connection with the blue colours of component I Zw 18 C (see discussion in Papaderos et al. 2002), suggests that most of the stellar mass in I Zw 18 has formed within the last 0.5 Gyr. Furthermore, we show that the exponential intensity fall-off in the filamentary ionized envelope of I Zw 18 is not particular to this system but a common property of the ionized halo of many SF dwarf galaxies on galactocentric distances of several kpc. In the absence of an appreciable underlying stellar background, extended ionized gas emission dominates in the periphery of I Zw 18, superficially resembling an exponential stellar disc on optical surface brightness profiles. The case of I Zw 18 suggests caution in the search of more distant young galaxy candidates. Intense SF activity in the early phase of dwarf galaxy formation may result in an extended ionized gas halo which can be mistaken for an evolved stellar disc by studying only its exponential surface brightness profile. We present narrow band, continuum subtracted Hα, [S ii], Hβ, [O iii] and [O ii] data taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope in the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214. From these images, we identify seventeen new planetary nebula candidates, and seven supernova remnant candidates. We use the observed emission line luminosity function of the planetary nebulae to establish a new velocity-independent distance to NGC 4214. We conclude that the PNLF technique gives a reddening independent distance to NGC 4214 of 3.19±0.36 Mpc, and that our current best-estimate of the distance to this galaxy ids 2.98±0.13 Mpc.  相似文献

An AO-assisted integral-field spectrograph is becoming the most efficient tool with which to explore ionized gas outflows. It maps faint spectral lines that diagnose cloud dust content, gas pressure, excitation mechanism, and chemical abundances. Coupled with recent improvements in photoionization models, the total mass hence flow energetics can be estimated. Establishing a consistent dynamical framework requires linking multi-frequency datasets to track the energy flow through its optimal-contrast emission in the various ISM phases. I show HST results on AGN, starburst nuclei, and Galactic Herbig-Haro Objects that need complementary 3D spectra at comparable spatial resolution to come soon from laser-guided AO + integral-field spectrographs at the William-Herschel and SOAR telescopes.  相似文献

It is shown that emission lines, first of all the ultraviolet resonance doublet 2800 Mgii, can be used to decipher the internal dynamic structure of QSOs and active galactic nuclei. The electron temperatures of the emission regions of these objects are determined. A hypothesis is proposed explaining the observed broad profiles of the 2800 Mgii line as a summary effect of emission clouds with a Maxwellian velocity distribution. The main physical parameters of emission clouds in QSOs are obtained. A mechanism of formation of emission clouds is suggested: namely, tidal disruption of stars near to a massive compact object.  相似文献
