The mobility of strontium in subsurface is largely influenced by sorption on to clay minerals. In the present study, kaolinite clay samples collected from the Kalpakkam nuclear plant site were employed to understand the sorption characteristics of strontium by batch method. The effect of several parameters such as time, strontium ion concentration, pH, temperature and ionic strength was investigated. The kinetic studies suggested pseudo-second-order mechanism. The experimental sorption data was fitted to Langmuir adsorption model for obtaining the sorption capacity of the sorbent. The maximum sorption capacity was 5.77 mg/g at 298 K and was found to increase with an increase in temperature. It was observed that the distribution coefficient (K d) of strontium on clay increased as the pH of the solution increased. The distribution coefficient was found to decrease with an increase in concentration of Na+ and Ca2+ ions. This variation of K d suggests that cation exchange is the predominant sorption process. It was also observed that sorption process is endothermic. The thermodynamic parameters such as ∆G 0, ∆H 0 and ∆S 0 were calculated. The negative values obtained for ∆G 0 indicated that the sorption of strontium on clay was spontaneous at all studied concentrations. ∆G 0 becomes more negative with an increase in temperature, suggests that the sorption process is more favorable at higher temperatures.  相似文献

Colloids act as vectors for pollutants in groundwater, thereby creating a series of environmental problems. While managed aquifer recharge plays an important role in protecting groundwater resources and controlling land subsidence, it has a significant effect on the transport of colloids. In this study, particle size and zeta potential of colloidal humic acid (HA) have been measured to determine the effects of different hydrochemistry conditions. Column experiments were conducted to examine the effects on the transport of colloidal HA under varying conditions of pH (5, 7, 9), ionic strength (<0.0005, 0.02, 0.05 M), cation valence (Na+, Ca2+) and flow rate (0.1, 0.2, 0.4 ml/min) through collectors (glass beads) to model the properties and quality of artificial recharge water and changes in the hydrodynamic field. Breakthrough curves showed that the behavior of colloidal HA being transported varied depending on the conditions. Colloid transport was strongly influenced by hydrochemical and hydrodynamic conditions. With decreasing pH or increasing ionic strength, a decrease in the peak effluent concentration of colloidal HA and increase in deposition could be clearly seen. Comparison of different cation valence tests indicated that changes in transport and deposition were more pronounced with divalent Ca2+ than with monovalent Na+. Changes in hydrodynamic field (flow rate) also had an impact on transportation of colloidal HA. The results of this study highlight the need for further research in this area.  相似文献

Two epithermal gold deposits (Kartaldağ and Madendağ) located in NW Turkey have been characterized through the detailed examinations involving geologic, mineralogical, fluid inclusion, stable isotope, whole-rock geochemistry, and geochronology data. The Kartaldağ deposit (0.01–17.65 ppm Au), hosted by Eocene dacite porphyry, is associated with four main alteration types with characteristic assemblage of: i) chlorite/smectite–illite ± kaolinite, ii) quartz–kaolinite, iii) quartz–alunite–pyrophyllite, iv) quartz–pyrite, the last being characterized by three distinct quartz generations comprising massive/vuggy (early), fine–medium grained, vug-lining (early), and banded, colloform, comb (late) textures. Observed sulfide minerals are pyrite, covellite, and sphalerite. Oxygen and sulfur isotope analyses, performed on quartz (δ18O(quartz): 7.93 to 8.95‰ and calculated δ18O(H2O): − 7.95 to 1.49‰) and pyrite (δ34S(pyrite): − 4.8‰ and calculated δ34S(H2S): − 6.08 to − 7.20‰) separates, suggest a meteoric water source for water in the hydrothermal fluid, and an igneous source for the sulfur dissolved in ore-related fluids. Microthermometric analyses of primary fluid inclusion assemblages performed on quartz (late quartz generation) yield temperatures (Th) dominantly in the range of 245–285 °C, and generally low salinity values at 0 to 1.7 wt.% NaCl eq. Based on the quartz textures and the associated base metal concentrations, along with fluid inclusion petrography, the early vug-lining quartz is considered to have been associated with the mineralization possibly through a boiling and a late mixing process at > 285 °C.The Madendağ deposit (0.27–20.60 ppm Au), hosted by Paleozoic mica schists, is associated with two main alteration types: sericite–illite–kaolinite, and quartz–pyrite dominated by two distinct quartz generations i) early colloform, comb and banded quartz and ii) late quartz, forming the cement in hydrothermal breccia. Whereas oxygen isotope analyses of quartz (δ18O(quartz): 9.55 to 18.19‰ and calculated δ18O(H2O): − 2.97 to 5.54‰) suggest varying proportions of meteoric and magmatic sources for the ore bearing fluid, sulfur isotope ratios (δ34S(pyrite): − 2.2‰ and calculated δ34S(H2S): (− 3.63) to (− 3.75) ‰) point to an essentially magmatic source for sulfur with or without contribution from sedimentary sources. Microthermometric analysis carried out on primary fluid inclusion populations of a brecciated sample (early quartz), give a temperature (Th) range of 235–255 °C and 0.0 to 0.7 wt.% NaCl eq. salinity. Based on the textural relationship, base metal and high gold contents, the ore precipitation stage is associated with late stage quartz formation via a possible boiling process. The presence of alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite, vuggy quartz and covellite suggest a high-sulfidation type of epithermal deposit for Kartaldağ. On the other hand, Madendağ is identified as an adularia-sericite type owing to the presence of significant sericite, neutral pH clays (mostly illite, chlorite/smectite, and kaolinite), low temperature quartz textures (e.g., colloform, comb, and banded quartz), and limited sulfide minerals.Given the geographical proximity of Kartaldağ and Madendağ deposits, the similar temperature and salinity ranges obtained from their fluid inclusions, and the similar ages of igneous rocks in both deposits (Kartaldağ: 40.80 ± 0.36 to 42.19 ± 0.45 Ma, Madendağ: 43.34 ± 0.85 Ma) the mineralizing systems in both deposits are considered to be genetically related.  相似文献

Natural colloids have a potential role in facilitating the transport of radionuclides in groundwater. To assess the role of mobile colloidal phases in radionuclide transport, characterization of colloids for size, size distribution, zeta potential, surface charge and elemental composition is required. Groundwater samples were collected from 12 borewells in the study area and were characterized with respect to physicochemical parameters. Water quality parameters such as pH, temperature, specific conductance, TDS and dissolved O2 were measured in situ. Based on salinity, two groundwater types were identified in the study area: (1) freshwater type and (2) brackish type. Laboratory and field-scale turbidity measurements in addition to quantitative analysis of major ions were carried out. It was observed that the colloid concentrations are reduced at higher salinity. Zetasizer, particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to characterize the colloidal particles in groundwater. Colloids were present in all the groundwater samples, the concentration varying between 0.05 and 6 mg/L. Colloid concentration was greater in wells with low ionic strength and the number of colloidal particles varied between 3 × 109 and 4 × 1011 particles/L. The average colloid size varied between 200 and 350 nm for various samples. The zeta potential of the colloidal particles varied between −25.5 and –34.0 mV. SEM analysis of colloidal particles revealed the presence of clays particularly kaolinite and that the mineral composition of colloids reflects the mineralogy of the aquifer. For proper risk assessment and remediation studies, the role of colloids in radionuclide transport assumes greater importance. This study highlights the need for, and relevance of, detailed colloid characterization to assess its role in the migration of radionuclides from near surface disposal facilities.  相似文献

Wadeite K2ZrSi3O9 and its analogues K2TiSi3O9 and Cs2ZrSi3O9, synthesized by high-temperature solid-state sintering, have been investigated using powder X-ray diffraction coupled with Rietveld analysis and high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. The crystal chemistry and energetics of these phases, together with K2SiVISi3 IVO9, a high-pressure wadeite analogue containing both tetrahedral and octahedral Si, are discussed in term of ionic substitutions. As the size of the octahedral framework cation increases, Si4+ → Ti4+ → Zr4+, the cell parameter c increases at a much higher rate than a. In contrast, increasing the interstitial alkali cation size (K+ → Cs+) results in a higher rate of increase in a compared with c. This behavior can be attributed to framework distortion around the interstitial cation. The enthalpies of formation from the constituent oxides (ΔHf,ox0) and from the elements (ΔHf,el0) have been determined from drop-solution calorimetry into 2PbO·B2O3 solvent at 975 K. The obtained values (in kJ/mol) are as follows: ΔHf,ox0 (K2TiSi3O9) = −355.8 ± 3.0, ΔHf,el0 (K2TiSi3O9) = −4395.1 ± 4.8, ΔHf,ox0 (K2ZrSi3O9) = −374.3 ± 3.3, ΔHf,el0 (K2ZrSi3O9) = −4569.9 ± 5.0, ΔHf,ox0 (Cs2ZrSi3O9) = −396.6 ± 4.4, and ΔHf,el0 (Cs2ZrSi3O9) = −4575.0 ± 5.5. The enthalpies of formation for K2SiVISi3 IVO9 were calculated from its drop-solution enthalpy of an earlier study (Akaogi et al. 2004), and the obtained ΔHf,ox0 (K2SiSi3O9) = −319.7 ± 3.4 and ΔHf,el0 (K2SiSi3O9) = −4288.7 ± 5.1 kJ/mol. With increasing the size of the octahedral framework cation or of the interstitial alkali cation, the formation enthalpies become more exothermic. This trend is consistent with the general behavior of increasing energetic stability with decreasing ionic potential (z/r) seen in many oxide and silicate systems. Further, increasing the size of the octahedral framework cation appears to induce more rapid increase in stability than increasing the interstitial alkali cation size, suggesting that framework cations play a more dominant role in wadeite stability.  相似文献

We have prepared aqueous MgSO4 solutions doped with various divalent metal cations (Ni2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, and Co2+) in proportions up to and including the pure end-members. These liquids have been solidified into fine-grained polycrystalline blocks of metal sulfate hydrate + ice by rapid quenching in liquid nitrogen. In a companion paper (Fortes et al., in Phys Chem Min 39) we reported the identification of various phases using X-ray powder diffraction, including meridianiite-structured undecahydrates, melanterite- and epsomite-structured heptahydrates, novel enneahydrates and a new octahydrate. In this work we report the changes in unit-cell parameters of these crystalline products where they exist over sufficient dopant concentrations. We find that there is a linear relationship between the rate of change in unit-cell volume as a function of dopant concentration and the ionic radius of the dopant cation; large ions such as Mn2+ produce a substantial inflation of the hydrates’ unit-cell volume, whereas smaller ions such as Ni2+ produce a modest reduction in unit-cell volume. Indeed, when the data for all hydrates are normalised (i.e., divided by the number of formula units per unit-cell, Z, and the hydration number, n), we find a quantitatively similar relationship for different values of n. Conversely, there is no relationship between the degree of unit-cell inflation or deflation and the limit to which a given cation will substitute into a certain hydrate structure; for example, Co2+ and Zn2+ affect the unit-cell volume of MgSO4·11H2O to a very similar degree, yet the solubility limits inferred in our companion paper are >60 mol. % Co2+ and <30 mol. % Zn2+.  相似文献

Single-crystal and powder electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic studies of natural amethyst quartz, before and after isochronal annealing between 573 and 1,173 K, have been made from 90 to 294 K. Single-crystal EPR spectra confirm the presence of two substitutional Fe3+ centers. Powder EPR spectra are characterized by two broad resonance signals at g = ~10.8 and 4.0 and a sharp signal at g = 2.002. The sharp signal is readily attributed to the well-established oxygen vacancy electron center E 1′. However, the two broad signals do not correspond to any known Fe3+ centers in the quartz lattice, but are most likely attributable to Fe3+ clusters on surfaces. The absolute numbers of spins of the Fe3+ species at g = ~10.8 have been calculated from powder EPR spectra measured at temperatures from 90 to 294 K. These results have been used to extract thermodynamic potentials, including Gibbs energy of activation ΔG, activation energy E a, entropy of activation ΔS and enthalpy of activation ΔH for the Fe3+ species in amethyst. In addition, magnetic susceptibilities (χ) have been calculated from EPR data at different temperatures. A linear relationship between magnetic susceptibility and temperature is consistent with the Curie–Weiss law. Knowledge about the stability and properties of Fe3+ species on the surfaces of quartz is important to better understanding of the reactivity, bioavailability and heath effects of iron in silica particles.  相似文献

A holistic study of the composition of the basalt groundwaters of the Atherton Tablelands region in Queensland, Australia was undertaken to elucidate possible mechanisms for the evolution of these very low salinity, silica- and bicarbonate-rich groundwaters. It is proposed that aluminosilicate mineral weathering is the major contributing process to the overall composition of the basalt groundwaters. The groundwaters approach equilibrium with respect to the primary minerals with increasing pH and are mostly in equilibrium with the major secondary minerals (kaolinite and smectite), and other secondary phases such as goethite, hematite, and gibbsite, which are common accessory minerals in the Atherton basalts. The mineralogy of the basalt rocks, which has been examined using X-ray diffraction and whole rock geochemistry methods, supports the proposed model for the hydrogeochemical evolution of these groundwaters: precipitation + CO2 (atmospheric + soil) + pyroxene + feldspars + olivine yields H4SiO4, HCO3 , Mg2+, Na+, Ca2+ + kaolinite and smectite clays + amorphous or crystalline silica + accessory minerals (hematite, goethite, gibbsite, carbonates, zeolites, and pyrite). The variations in the mineralogical content of these basalts also provide insights into the controls on groundwater storage and movement in this aquifer system. The fresh and weathered vesicular basalts are considered to be important in terms of zones of groundwater occurrence, while the fractures in the massive basalt are important pathways for groundwater movement.  相似文献

In the present study the distribution of TBT between solid and water phase as a function of several parameters was determined. Two types of clay minerals (Na-montmorillonite SWy and kaolinite KGa) and quartz sand were used as sorbents in conventional batch experiments. Sorption coefficients (Kd) followed the order montmorillonite (89 l/kg) > kaolinite (51 l/kg) > quartz (25 l/kg), while for sorption coefficients normalized to the surface area (Kd′) an opposite trend was observed, with the lowest value determined for montmorillonite (2.79 × 10−3 l/m2) and the highest for quartz sand (8.04 × 10−2 l/m2). The results demonstrate that numerous environmental parameters influence the adsorption process of TBT, such as solid/solution ratio, clay content and salinity. Another important factor governing TBT adsorption is pH, because it affects both the TBT species in the water phase as well as the surface properties of the mineral phase. The maximum of TBT adsorption onto clays was always around pH 6–7. According to the data, it is evident that the content of organic matter in the solid phase plays an important role on TBT adsorption, either as particulate organic matter (POM) or organic matter adsorbed to mineral particles (AOM). Experiments were carried out with well characterized organic matter and the results showed a linear increase of Kd from 51 up to 2700 l/kg upon the addition of 5% of particulate organic matter to pure phased kaolinite. TBT adsorption onto mineral surfaces, which were previously enriched with adsorbed organic matter, was investigated at different pH. The present study points to the importance of identifying and characterizing sorbents and envrionmental conditions, in order to predict and model TBT distribution in natural systems.

硅质蚀变岩中SiO_2含量发生明显的富集作用,其余主量元素(K_2O、Na_2O、Al_2O_3、Fe_2O_3、P_2O5)含量显著降低;明矾石蚀变岩和粘土蚀变岩具有相似的地球化学特征,SiO_2、Al_2O_3、Fe_2O_3、P_2O_5元素含量范围变大,K_2O和Na_2O含量降低,且Na_2O降低更加明显;而钛为不活泼元素,在岩石发生蚀变过程中TiO_2含量变化很小。矾山地区的酸性蚀变岩帽的产状、蚀变类型、地球化学特征受构造和地层的双重控制。  相似文献

Knowledge of slurry settling is essential for geotechnical engineering applications such as coastal land reclamation and mine waste disposal. In the presence of charged solids and ion-rich liquids, complex physicochemical interactions govern the behavior of slurries. The main objective of this study was to develop a fundamental understanding of self-weight settling of laterite ore slurries. To capture the influence of geology and the environment, samples were obtained from mining operations in different parts of the globe. Based on laboratory testing, the investigated ores were found to be either oxide-rich with goethite, gibbsite, meghamite and hematite making at least 90% of the material or clay-rich with chrysotile, cholritic intergrade, and siliceous minerals accounting for more than 50% of the sample. The dominance of salt forming ions such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl, NO3 , HCO3 and SO4 2− in the pore waters indicated the influence of seawater on the waters used for slurry preparation. The oxide-rich ores in low ionic waters resulted in flocculated fabrics whereas the clay-rich ores in high ionic waters led to cardhouse microstructures. The aggregated fabrics with low tortuousity and fewer dead ends resulted in a high settling rate and amount (k i  = 10−1 to 10−2 cm/s and SP = 62 to 49%) whereas the cardhouse morphologies with high tortuousity and lower pore connectivity exhibited a slow and low settling (k i  = 10−3 to 10−4 cm/s and SP = 37 to 17%). The initial hydraulic conductivity was found to be directly proportional to settling potential.  相似文献

The Mombi bauxite deposit is located in 165 km northwest of Dehdasht city, southwestern Iran. The deposit is situated in the Zagros Simply Fold Belt and developed as discontinuous stratified layers in Upper Cretaceous carbonates (Sarvak Formation). Outcrops of the bauxitic horizons occur in NW-SE trending Bangestan anticline and are situated between the marine neritic limestones of the Ilam and Sarvak Formations. From the bottom to top, the deposit is generally consisting of brown, gray, pink, pisolitic, red, and yellow bauxite horizons. Boehmite, diaspore, kaolinite, and hematite are the major mineral components, while gibbsite, goethite, anatase, rutile, pyrite, chlorite, quartz, as well as feldspar occur to a lesser extent. The Eh–pH conditions during bauxitization in the Mombi bauxite deposit show oxidizing to reducing conditions during the Upper Cretaceous. This feature seems to be general and had a significant effect on the mineral composition of Cretaceous bauxite deposits in the Zagros fold belt. Geochemical data show that Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3 and TiO2 are the main components in the bauxite ores at Mombi and immobile elements like Al, Ti, Nb, Zr, Hf, Cr, Ta, Y, and Th were enriched while Rb, Ba, K, Sr, and P were depleted during the bauxitization process. Chondrite-normalized REE pattern in the bauxite ores indicate REE enrichment (ΣREE = 162.8–755.28 ppm, ave. ∼399.36 ppm) relative to argillic limestone (ΣREE = 76.26–84.03 ppm, ave. ∼80.145 ppm) and Sarvak Formation (ΣREE = 40.15 ppm). The REE patterns also reflect enrichment in LREE relative to HREE. Both positive and negative Ce anomalies (0.48–2.0) are observed in the Mombi bauxite horizons. These anomalies are related to the change of oxidation state of Ce (from Ce3+ to Ce4+), ionic potential, and complexation of Ce4+ with carbonate compounds in the studied horizons. It seems that the variations in the chemistry of ore-forming solutions (e.g., Eh and pH), function of carbonate host rock as a geochemical barrier, and leaching degree of lanthanide-bearing minerals are the most important controlling factors in the distribution and concentration of REEs. Several lines of evidences such as Zr/Hf and Nb/Ta ratios as well as similarity in REE patterns indicate that the underlying marly limestone (Sarvak Formation) could be considered as the source of bauxite horizons. Based on mineralogical and geochemical data, it could be inferred that the Mombi deposit has been formed in a karstic environment during karstification and weathering of the Sarvak limy Formation.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and ionic strength on the diffusion of HTO parallel to the direction of compaction through 5 highly compacted clay minerals (bulk dry density, ρb,d = 1.90 ± 0.05 Mg/m3), namely montmorillonite (Na- and Ca-form), illite (Na- and Ca-form), and kaolinite, was studied. The diffusion experiments were carried out at temperatures between 0 °C and 60 °C and at ionic strengths of 0.01 M and 1 M NaCl for the Na-form clays and kaolinite, and of 0.005 M and 0.5 M CaCl2 for the Ca-form. The ionic strength had an insignificant influence on the values of the effective diffusion coefficient (variation by less than 10%) for the clays under study at this degree of compaction. The effective diffusion coefficients followed the order Na-montmorillonite < Ca-montmorillonite < Ca-illite < Na-illite  kaolinite. It is thought that the differences between Na- and Ca-montmorillonite originate from the larger size particles, and thus the lower tortuosity of the latter; whereas the differences between Na- and Ca-illite are related to the different degree of solvation of the Na and Ca cations. The activation energies were successfully calculated using the Arrhenius law. Swelling clays (Na- and Ca-montmorillonite) had slightly larger activation energy values (20 kJ/mol) compared to bulk water (17 kJ/mol); Ca-illite (16 kJ/mol), Na-illite (13 kJ/mol) and kaolinite (14.4 kJ/mol) lower values than that of bulk water. The low activation energies of the last three clays may be related to weaker H-bonds between water and the clay surfaces compared to those in bulk water.  相似文献

Experiments measuring kaolinite and smectite dissolution rates were carried out using batch reactors at 35° and 80°C. No potential catalysts or inhibitors were present in solution. Each reactor was charged with 1 g of clay of the ≤2 μm fraction and 80, 160 or 240 ml of 0.1–4 M KOH solution. An untreated but sized kaolinite from St. Austell and two treated industrial smectites were used in the experiments. One smectite is a nearly pure montmorillonite, while the second has a significant component of beidellitic charge (35%). The change in solution composition and mineralogy was monitored as a function of time. Initially, the 3 clays dissolved congruently. No new formed phases were observed by XRD and SEM during the pure dissolution stage. The kaolinite dissolution is characterized by a linear release of silica and Al as a function of the log of time. This relationship can be explained by a reaction affinity effect which is controlled by the octahedral layer dissolution. Far from equilibrium, dissolution rates are proportional to a0.56±0.12OH at 35°C and to a0.81±0.12OH at 80°C. The activation energy of kaolinite dissolution increases from 33±8 kJ/mol in 0.1 M KOH solutions to 51±8 kJ/mol in 3 M KOH solutions. In contrast to kaolinite, the smectites dissolve at much lower rates and independently of the aqueous silica or Al concentrations. The proportionality of the smectite dissolution rate constant at 35 and 80°C was a0.15±0.06OH. The activation energy of dissolution appears to be independent of pH for smectite and is found to be 52±4 kJ/mol. The differences in behavior between the two kinds of minerals can be explained by structural differences. The hydrolysis of the tetrahedral and the octahedral layer appears as parallel reactions for kaolinite dissolution and as serial reactions for smectite dissolution. The rate limiting step is the dissolution of the octahedral layer in the case of kaolinite, and the tetrahedral layer in the case of smectite.  相似文献

The sorption of Np(V) and Np(IV) onto kaolinite has been studied in the absence and presence of humic acid (HA) in a series of batch equilibrium experiments under different experimental conditions: [Np]0: 1.0 × 10-6 or 1.0 × 10-5 M, [HA]0: 0 or 50 mg/L, I: 0.01 or 0.1 M NaClO4, solid to liquid ratio: 4 g/L, pH: 6–11, anaerobic or aerobic conditions, without or with carbonate. The results showed that the Np(V) sorption onto kaolinite is affected by solution pH, ionic strength, Np concentration, presence of carbonate and HA. In the absence of carbonate, the Np(V) uptake increased with pH up to ∼96% at pH 11. HA further increased the Np(V) sorption between pH 6 and 9 but decreased the Np(V) sorption between pH 9 and 11. In the presence of carbonate, the Np(V) sorption increased with pH and reached a maximum of 54% between pH 8.5 and 9. At higher pH values, the Np(V) sorption decreased due to the presence of dissolved neptunyl carbonate species with a higher negative charge that were not sorbed onto the kaolinite surface which is negatively charged in this pH range. HA again decreased the Np(V) uptake in the near-neutral to alkaline pH range due to formation of aqueous neptunyl humate complexes. The decrease of the initial Np(V) concentration from 1.0 × 10−5 M to 1.0 × 10−6 M led to a shift of the Np(V) adsorption edge to lower pH values. A higher ionic strength increased the Np(V) uptake onto kaolinite in the presence of carbonate but had no effect on Np(V) uptake in the absence of carbonate.  相似文献

Geochemical processes that take place in the aquifer have played a major role in spatial and temporal variations of groundwater quality. This study was carried out with an objective of identifying the hydrogeochemical processes that controls the groundwater quality in a weathered hard rock aquifer in a part of Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Groundwater samples were collected from 45 wells once every 2 months from March 2008 to September 2009. Chemical parameters of groundwater such as groundwater level, EC and pH were measured insitu. The major ion concentrations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl, and SO4 2− were analyzed using ion chromatograph. CO3 and HCO3 concentration was determined by acid–base titration. The abundance of major cation concentration in groundwater is as Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ while that of anions is HCO3  > SO4 2− > Cl > CO3 . Ca–HCO3, Na–Cl, Ca–Na–HCO3 and Ca–Mg–Cl are the dominant groundwater types in this area. Relation between temporal variation in groundwater level and saturation index of minerals reveals the evaporation process. The ion-exchange process controls the concentration of ions such as calcium, magnesium and sodium. The ionic ratio of Ca/Mg explains the contribution of calcite and dolomite to groundwater. In general, the geochemical processes and temporal variation of groundwater in this area are influenced by evaporation processes, ion exchange and dissolution of minerals.  相似文献

The present work investigated the adsorption and mobility (desorption) of Sb(V) on kaolinite using batch experiments. The adsorption of Sb(V) on kaolinite was studied as a function of contact time, pH, ionic strength, humic acid (HA), initial Sb(V) concentration and temperature. Kinetic studies suggest that the equilibrium is achieved within 24 h. The adsorption of Sb(V) was strongly affected by changes in I at low ionic strength and unaffected at high ionic strength. The adsorption is weakly dependent on the presence of humic acid, but is strongly dependent on pH. Within the range tested, the optimal pH for Sb(V) adsorption is 3.6, and close to 75% removal can be achieved. Desorption is dependent on the original suspension pH. The addition sequence of Sb(V)/HA do not influence the adsorption of Sb(V) on kaolinite. The adsorption data fit both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH 0, ΔS 0 and ΔG 0) were calculated from the temperature dependence, and the results suggest the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the process.  相似文献

Using a conventional high-T furnace, the solid solutions between magnesiochromite and manganochromite, (Mg1−x Mn x )Cr2O4 with x = 0.00, 0.19, 0.44, 0.61, 0.77 and 1.00, were synthesized at 1,473 K for 48 h in open air. The ambient powder X-ray diffraction data suggest that the Vx relationship of the spinels does not show significant deviation from the Vegard’s law. In situ high-T powder X-ray diffraction measurements were taken up to 1,273 K at ambient pressure. For the investigated temperature range, the unit-cell parameters of the spinels increase smoothly with temperature increment, indicating no sign of cation redistribution between the tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The VT data were fitted with a polynomial expression for the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient (aT = a0 + a1 T + a2 T - 2 \alpha_{T} = a_{0} + a_{1} T + a_{2} T^{ - 2} ), which yielded insignificant a 2 values. The effect of the composition on a 0 is adequately described by the equation a 0 = [17.7(8) − 2.4(1) × x] 10−6 K−1, whereas that on a 1 by the equation a 1 = [8.6(9) + 2.1(11) × x] 10−9 K−2.  相似文献

Significant amounts of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) rich saline water can be produced by the oxidation of sulfide minerals contained in inland acid sulfate soils (IASS). In the absence of carbonate minerals, the dissolution of phyllosilicate minerals is one of very few processes that can provide long-term acid neutralisation. It is therefore important to understand the acid dissolution behavior of naturally occurring clay minerals from IASS under saline–acidic solutions. The objective of this study was to investigate the dissolution of a natural clay-rich sample under saline–acidic conditions (pH 1–4; ionic strengths = 0.01 and 0.25 M; 25 °C) and over a range of temperatures (25–45 °C; pH 1 and pH 4). The clay-rich sample referred to as Bottle Bend clay (BB clay) used was from an IASS (Bottle Bend lagoon) in south-western New South Wales (Australia) and contained smectite (40%), illite (27%), kaolinite (26%) and quartz (6%). Acid dissolution of the BB clay was initially rapid, as indicated by the fast release of cations (Si, Al, K, Fe, Mg). Relatively higher Al (pH 4) and K (pH 2–4) release was obtained from BB clay dissolution in higher ionic strength solutions compared to the lower ionic strength solutions. The steady state dissolution rate (as determined from Si, Al and Fe release rates; RSi, RAl, RFe) increased with decreasing solution pH and increasing temperature. For example, the highest log RSi value was obtained at pH 1 and 45 °C (−9.07 mol g−1 s−1), while the lowest log RSi value was obtained at pH 4 and 25 °C (−11.20 mol g−1 s−1). A comparison of these results with pure mineral dissolution rates from the literature suggests that the BB clay dissolved at a much faster rate compared to the pure mineral samples. Apparent activation energies calculated for the clay sample varied over the range 76.6 kJ mol−1 (pH 1) to 37.7 kJ mol−1 (pH 4) which compare very well with the activation energy values for acidic dissolution of monomineralic samples e.g. montmorillonite from previous studies. The acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) of the clay sample was calculated from the release of all structural cations except Si (i.e. Al, Fe, K, Mg). According to these calculations an ANC of 1.11 kg H2SO4/tonne clay/day was provided by clay dissolution at pH 1 (I = 0.25 M, 25 °C) compared to an ANC of 0.21 kg H2SO4/tonne clay/day at pH 4 (I = 0.25 M, 25 °C). The highest ANC of 6.91 kg H2SO4/tonne clay/day was provided by clay dissolution at pH 1 and at 45 °C (I = 0.25 M), which is more than three times higher than the ANC provided under the similar solution conditions at 25 °C. In wetlands with little solid phase buffering available apart from clay minerals, it is imperative to consider the potential ANC provided by the dissolution of abundantly occurring phyllosilicate minerals in devising rehabilitation schemes.  相似文献

Co sorption was measured as a function of pH, ionic strength (0.001-0.1 M NaNO3) and sorbate/sorbent ratio on pure quartz, HFO and kaolinite and on binary and ternary mixtures of the three solids. Sorption data measured for the pure solids were used to derive internally-consistent diffuse layer surface complexation model (DLM) stability constants for Co sorption. Co sorption on HFO could be adequately modeled over a broad range of ionic strengths and sorbate/sorbent ratios with a two variable-charge site model. Fits based on a single variable-charge site model were reasonable, but were improved by using ionic-strength dependent stability constants. A single variable-charge site model with an additional permanent ion exchange site produced the best fit to Co edges measured on kaolinite over a range of ionic strength and sorbate/sorbent ratios. These DLM fits were also improved by using ionic-strength dependent stability constants. The DLM approach could not adequately describe the slope of Co sorption edges on quartz. This study demonstrates that for accurate prediction of Co sorption over wide ranges of ionic strength and sorbate/sorbent ratio, the DLM may require ionic-strength dependent stability constants. DLM stability constants for Co sorption derived for the pure solids were used to predict sorption as a function of pH and solid concentration on binary and ternary mixtures of the three solids. Discrepancies between predictions and measurements were quantitatively similar to those observed for the pure mineral systems. Thus, a simple component additivity approach provides useful predictions of metal sorption in the mixed solid systems.  相似文献
