The early diagenetic environment of intertidal sandy sediments (sands) and muddy sediments (muds) is described and compared from two cores taken from an unpolluted part of the Manukau Harbour, New Zealand. Extraction techniques characterized the form of the trace elements (Fe, Mn, S, C, Pb, Zn, Cu) at different depths in the sediment. Dissolved forms of Fe, Mn, and S were measured in interstitial water. Nonresidual metal concentrations, humic acid, FeS, and FeS2 are an order of magnitude higher in the muds than in the sands because of dilution by unreactive sand particles. Muds contain a larger proportion of metals in the mobile fractions; exchangeable (Mn), carbonate (Mn, Fe, Zn), and easily-reducible oxide (Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb). This is due to greater surface area (for Mn adsorption); the favorable conditions for MnCO3, FeCO3, and FeS precipitation; and higher concentrations of easily reducible iron oxide and humic acid. Therefore, compared to the sands, muds are more important as reservoirs for toxic metals, both in terms of quantity and availability. At either site there was very little difference between the forms of Zn, Pb or Cu identified by sequential extraction as sediments changed from oxic to anoxic conditions. One reason for this is that the amounts and proportions of some of the important components that bind metals, viz., amorphous iron hydrous oxides, humic acids, and FeS2, do not change much. Other components that do change with redox conditions, for example, manganese phases and FeS, are only minor components of the sediment. Redox conditions, then, have relatively little effect on trace-metal partitioning in the sediment matrix of these unpolluted sediments. 相似文献

A unique instance of Holocene estuarine phosphogenesis has been investigated in Raglan Harbour, on the west coast of North Island, New Zealand. Nodular calcareous concretions, which formed within surficial estuarine muds between 6500 and 3600 years BP, were superficially impregnated by carbonate fluorapatite between 3600 and 1600 years BP. The phosphatized nodules lie beneath a late Quaternary shore platform, which is reinforced by a mass of intertwined bioturbation structures and tubular rootlet casts impregnated by limonite and goethite. Large polygonal cracks, indicative of a desiccatory regime, are locally conspicuous on the platform surface and in the immediately subjacent muds. The phosphogenesis in Raglan Harbour is here related to an episode of lowered sea-level, during which a paludal environment succeeded the estuarine, to be followed, in turn, by a positively and interlude. The subsequent rise of sea-level to its present position over the last 1600 years or so has reinstated the shore platform in its present intertidal situation. 相似文献

Analysis of ten heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Zn) in six sediment cores from Wellington Harbour show both anthropogenic enrichments and diagenetic modifications. Absolute concentrations determined by two methods, x-ray fluorescence and acid leaching for bioavailability, are not comparable. However, vertical trends in concentrations of the cored sediment are comparable. To assess levels of anthropogenic pollution, enrichment factors (enriched concentrations in upper core divided by background levels in lower core) are preferred over index of accumulation (I
geo) values because preindustrial or background levels of heavy metals are well constrained. The ten metals are placed into three groups: (1) Cu, Pb, and Zn, which show the most anthropogenic enrichment; (2) As, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Sb, which are often associated with anthropogenic pollution but show only minor enrichment; and (3) Fe and Mn, which are diagenetically enriched. Assuming harbor waters are well mixed, anthropogenic enrichments of Cu, Pb, and Zn, are time correlative, but the degree of enrichment depends on the method of analysis and core location. Levels of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn show small variations in preindustrial sediments that are not related to changes in grain size and probably result from changes in the oxidation-reduction potential of the sediments and salinity of the pore waters. 相似文献

Bed load sediment traps were deployed at two sections across channels in Rangaunu Harbour entrance. Traps were inspected and emptied by divers at hourly intervals through both spring and neap tidal cycles for a total of 292 trap deployments. Current velocities were measured simultaneously with the trap inspections. Transport is concentrated in sandy megaripple fields on the channel banks and sub-tidal platforms flanking the channels. There, transport is almost continuous throughout the tidal cycle, increasing with flow velocity but lagging by approximately one hour. The channel floors are lined with shell-gravel lag across which bedload transport rates are low and discontinuous. Tidal asymmetry produces a net seaward transport through the channel troughs and a net landward transport across the channel banks and flanking sub-tidal platforms. Sediment leaving the harbour recirculates in anticlockwise gyres across the ebb-tide delta to re-enter the harbou and maintain the supply of sand to the megaripple field. Transport during spring tides is typically 25–30 times that during neaps. Predictions of transport rates, from a method developed by Black & Healy utilizing the Yalin bedload equation, produced transport rates similar to the traps over sand beds. Transport over shell lag surfaces appears independent of near-bed velocity and more dependent on the passage of ribbons of sand across the lag surface. 相似文献

The chemical and isotopic compositions of gases from hydrocarbon systems of the Taranaki Basin of New Zealand (both offshore and onshore) show wide variation. The most striking difference between the western and south-eastern groups of gases is the helium content and its isotopic ratio. In the west, the Maui gas is over an order of magnitude higher in helium concentration (up to 190 μmol mol−1) and its 3He/4He ratio of 3.8 RA (where RA=the air 3He/4He ratio of 1.4×10−6) is approximately half that of upper mantle helium issuing from volcanic vents of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In the SE, the Kupe South and most Kapuni natural gases have only a minor mantle helium input of 0.03–0.32 RA and low total helium concentrations of 10–19 μmol mol−1. The 3He/C ratio (where C represents the total carbon in the gas phase) of the samples measured including those from a recent study of on-shore Taranaki natural gases are generally high at locations where the surface heat flow is high. The 3He/CO2 ratio of the Maui gases of 5 to 18×10−9 is higher than the MORB value of 0.2 to 0.5×10−9, a feature found in other continental basins such as the Pannonian and Vienna basins and in many high helium wells in the USA. Extrapolation to zero CO2/3He and CO2/C indicates δ13C(CO2) values between −7 and −5‰ close to that of MORB CO2. The remaining CO2 would appear to be mostly organically-influenced with δ13C(CO2) c.−15‰. There is some evidence of marine carbonate CO2 in the gases from the New Plymouth field. The radiogenic 4He content (Herad) varies across the Taranaki Basin with the highest Herad/C ratios occurring in the Maui field. δ13C(CH4) becomes more enriched in 13C with increasing Herad and hydrocarbon maturity. Because 3He/4He is related to the ratio of mantle to radiogenic crustal helium and 3He/C is virtually constant in the Maui field, there is a correlation between RC/RA (where RC=air-corrected 3He/4He) and δ13C(CH4) in the Maui and New Plymouth fields, with the more negative δ13C(CH4) values corresponding to high 3He/4He ratios. A correlation between 3He/4He and δ13C(CO2) was also observed in the Maui field. In the fields adjacent to Mt Taranaki (2518 m andesitic volcano), correlations of some parameters, particularly CO2/CH4, C2H6/CH4 and δ13C(CH4), are present with increasing depth of the gas reservoir and with distance from the volcanic cone. 相似文献

Land-based pollutants such as fertilizers and wastewater can infiltrate into aquifers and discharge into surrounding coastal water bodies as submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Oceanic islands, with a large coast length to land area ratio, may be hot spots of SGD into the global ocean. Although SGD may be a major pathway of dissolved nutrients, carbon and metals to coastal waters, studies have been limited due to the difficulties in measuring this often diffuse process. This study used radium isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra) to investigate SGD and the associated fluxes of nutrients into Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand. We calculated the apparent water mass ages of the harbour to be between ~4.1 and 7.8 days, which was similar to a previous numerical model of ~2–8 days. A 226Ra mass balance was constructed to quantify SGD fluxes at the harbour scale. A minimum SGD flux rate of 0.53 cm day?1 was calculated by using the maximum groundwater end-member value from 22 sample sites. However, using the geometric mean from these samples as a representative end-member, a final value of 2.83 cm day?1 or a flux of 3.09 × 106 m3 day?1 was calculated. These values were between ~1 and 2.8 times greater than all the major river and creeks discharging into the harbour during the sampling period. Due to the higher observed nutrient concentrations in groundwater, the SGD-derived dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) fluxes were calculated to be 1.07, 0.87 and 0.05 mmol m2 day?1, respectively. These SGD inputs were ~5 times (for nitrogen) and ~8 times (for phosphorus) greater than the input from surrounding rivers and streams. The average N:P ratio in groundwater samples was 36:1 (which was greatly in excess of the Redfield ratio of 16). The harbour water had a N:P ratio of ~17:1. A positive relationship between radium isotopes and N:P ratios in the harbour further supported the hypothesis that SGD can have major implications for primary production, including recurrent algal bloom events which occur in the harbour. We suggest SGD as a major driver of nutrient dynamics in Tauranga Harbour and potentially other similar coastal lagoon systems and estuaries on oceanic islands. 相似文献

A generalised crustal structure of Fiordland is proposed.Detailed mapping in part of Western Fiordland has led to the recognition of a basement granulite facies lower crustal material, probably Precambrian in age) separated by a regional thrust zone from a cover sequence (amphibolite facies gneisses, of Lower Paleozoic age). With the recognition of the basement—cover relationship and the aid of aeromagnetic anomalies Fiordland has been divided into four, generally north-northeast trending, regions. The Western Fiordland region is composed chiefly of basement rocks. The Central Fiordland and Southwestern Fiordland regions are made up predominantly of amphibolite and greenschist-facies metasediments and gneissic granodiorites of the cover sequence, which in Central Fiordland have a regional dip to the east, off the basement. The Eastern Fiordland region is characterised by a series of basic, intermediate and acid intrusive rocks. The more prominent magnetic anomalies in Eastern Fiordland, Southwestern Fiordland, and a large anomaly off the coast of Western Fiordland, are all considered to be caused by intrusive bodies. The presence of a positive gravity anomaly over Western Fiordland, coupled with a gravity low offshore, is consistent with the lower crust being uplifted and exposed in this area. Continuing shallow and intermediate-depth seismic activity beneath Fiordland, as well as the large size of the gravity anomaly, suggest that tectonic forces are currently acting to maintain Western Fiordland at its unusually high level.Fiordland thus displays a cross-section of continental crust: Precambrian(?) metaigneous granulites in the lower crust; Lower Paleozoic metasedimentary amphibolitefacies gneisses and melted equivalents in the middle crust; Mesozoic intrusives, and overlying Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments in the upper crust. 相似文献

The formation and occurrence of subterranean erosion tunnels is considered to be a more widespread phenomenon than has previously been recognised. The formation of erosion tunnels is related to the physico-chemical characteristics of soils and is dependent upon the concurrent occurrence of a number of factors, including soil characteristics, climate, topography, geology and hydraulic considerations.Of particular consideration is the comparatively widespread identification of erosion tunnels in sedimentary deposits in which the phenomena have previously been thought to be isolated occurrences. The methods for determining the propensity for tunnelling to develop within a soil are not well defined, and lead to apparently anomalous results. There is thus a need for continued research on the occurrence of these phenomena, and the development of suitable laboratory tests to better define soils which present a risk. 相似文献

Grain boundary migration of water and carbon dioxide during uplift of garnet-zone Alpine Schist, New Zealand 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Abstract Deformed quartz veins in garnet-zone schist adjacent to the active Alpine Fault, New Zealand, have fluid inclusions trapped along quartz grain boundaries. Textures suggest that the inclusions formed in their present shapes during annealing of the deformed veins. Many of the inclusions are empty, but some contain carbon dioxide with densities that range from 0.16 to 0.80 g cm−3 . No water, nitrogen or methane was detected. The inclusions are considerably more CO2 -rich than either the primary metamorphic fluid (<5% CO2 ) or fluids trapped in fracture-related situations in the same, or related, rocks (<50% CO2 ). Enrichment of CO2 is inferred to have resulted from selective migration (wicking) of saline water from the inclusions along water-wet grain boundaries after cooling-induced immiscibility of a water-CO2 mixture. Inclusion volumes changed after loss of water. Non-wetting CO2 remained trapped in the inclusions until further percolation progressively removed CO2 in solution. This mechanism of fluid migration dominated in ductile quartz-rich rocks near, but below, the brittle-ductile transition. At deeper levels, hydraulic fracturing is also an important mechanism for fluid migration, whereas at shallower levels advection through open fractures dominates the fluid flow regime. 相似文献

Barrier dunes on the northern side of the Tawharanui Peninsula, north of Auckland, New Zealand, appear to have been overtopped by extreme waves that have deposited two large sand washover lobes in a back beach wetland. Present-day storm surges and storm waves are incapable of overtopping the barrier dunes. However, historical data and numerical models indicate tsunamis are amplified by resonance within the adjacent bay and Hauraki Gulf. Further, the location of nearshore reefs in close proximity to the washover lobes suggests that the interaction between tsunamis and the reefs further amplified the waves at those locations. The presence of a distinctive pumice (Loisels Pumice) within the washover deposits suggests that the deposits are associated with a 15th Century eruption from the submarine Mt Healy caldera located northeast of New Zealand. 相似文献

The Coffs Harbour Association, New England Orogen, consists of thick, monotonous units of Late Palaeozoic greywacke, laminated siltstone and mudstone, and massive argillite. The rocks of the association have a common provenance, being derived predominantly from a volcanic arc source consisting of mainly dacite, with minor andesite and rhyolite. The Coramba beds in the Coffs Harbour Block are divided into four petrofacies based on QFL data and the occurrence of detrital hornblende. Upwards, the petrofacies are: A—volcanolithic, B—feldspathic, C—horn‐blende‐feldspathic, D—hornblende‐volcanolithic. The petrofacies and vertical variation in non‐volcanic detritus indicate minor erosion and exposure of a non‐volcanic source, followed first by recommencement of volcanism, penecontemporaneously with sedimentation, then further erosion of the non‐volcanic source area. There was little temporal change in the character of volcanic detritus shed from the source area. Equivalents of the four petrofacies are recognised in other blocks of the association, although because of structural complexity, a complete A‐D sequence has not been found. The Coffs Harbour sandstones are similar to sands in modern ocean basins derived from an arc system of either continental margin or island arc type. The sandstones are not similar to recycled orogenic provenances, such as found in accretionary prisms or trench‐slope basins; the compositions suggest that the sandstones were deposited in either a forearc or backarc setting. 相似文献

The Macraes orogenic gold deposit is hosted by a graphitic micaceous schist containing auriferous porphyroblastic sulphides. The host rock resembles zones of unmineralised micaceous graphitic pyritic schists, derived from argillaceous protoliths, that occur locally in background pelitic Otago Schist metasediments. This study was aimed at determining the relationship between these similar rock types, and whether the relationship had implications for ore formation. Argillites in the protolith turbidites of the Otago Schist metamorphic belt contain minor amounts of detrital organic matter (<0.1 wt.%) and diagenetic pyrite (<0.3 wt.% S). The detrital organic carbon was mobilised by metamorphic–hydrothermal fluids and redeposited as graphite in low-grade metaturbidites (pumpellyite–actinolite and greenschist facies). This carbon mobility occurred through >50 million years of evolution of the metamorphic belt, from development of sheared argillite in the Jurassic, to postmetamorphic ductile extension in the Cretaceous. Introduced graphite is structurally controlled and occurs with metamorphic muscovite and chlorite as veins and slicken-sided shears, with some veins having >50% noncarbonate carbon. Graphitic foliation seams in low-grade micaceous schist and metamorphic quartz veins contain equant graphite porphyroblasts up to 2 mm across that are composed of crystallographically homogeneous graphite crystals. Graphite reflectance is anisotropic and ranges from ~1% to ~8% (green light). Texturally similar porphyroblastic pyrite has grown in micaceous schist (up to 10 wt.% S), metamorphic quartz veins and associated muscovite-rich shears. These pyritic schists are weakly enriched in arsenic (up to 60 ppm). The low-grade metamorphic mobility and concentration of graphite in micaceous schists is interpreted to be a precursor process that structurally and geochemically prepared parts of the Otago Schist belt for later (more restricted) gold mineralisation. Economic amounts of gold, and associated arsenic, were subsequently introduced to carbonaceous sulphidic schists in the Macraes gold deposit by a separate metamorphic fluid derived from high-grade metaturbidites. Fluid flow at all stages in these processes occurred at metamorphic rates (mm/year), and fluids were broadly in equilibrium with the rocks through which they were passing. 相似文献

F1 macroscopic folds in the Late Palaeozoic Coffs Harbour Beds in the SE portion of the New England Fold Belt are commonly transected by cleavage. These macroscopic folds are tight to isoclinal structures, with a consistent vergence to the NE. Axial surfaces are either steeply dipping to the SW or vertical, and are typically faulted. Anomalous bedding‐cleavage relations occur where the steeply dipping cleavage intersects overturned limbs of F1 macroscopic and some F1 mesoscopic folds. Elsewhere F1 mesoscopic folds have a well developed, axial‐surface cleavage and are rarely downward facing. Cleavage is commonly strike‐divergent from axial surfaces of F1 macroscopic folds, except adjacent to the Demon Fault System, where they are parallel. These anomalous cleavage‐folds relations possibly developed during the one deformation. D1 structures are refolded by kink‐like folds that are steeply plunging. The structural style of the D1 deformation indicates that it possibly resulted from accretionary processes at a consuming plate margin. 相似文献

Thiosulphate is present in hot springs, streams and thermal pools of the Taupo Volcanic Zone and Ngawha, New Zealand, at concentrations of 1.2 (±1.3) × 10−5 M to 7.05 (±0.12) × 10−4M. Formed as a metastable product of sulphide oxidation, thiosulphate is buffered in the presence of elemental S according to, . Unless all sulphide present has been bacterially oxidised to sulphate, a steady state concentration of thiosulphate is maintained. As a soft base thiosulphate is capable of complexing several transition metals. The thermodynamically predicted speciation of Ag in Champagne Pool, for example, indicates a Ag(S2O3)2−3 activity similar to that of AgCl2− though less than that of Ag(HS)2−. 相似文献

Four phases of deformation are recorded by minor structures in the New Harbour Group (NHG) of southern Holy Island. The regional schistosity in these rocks is a differentiated crenulation cleavage of D2 age. An earlier preferred orientation (S1) is commonly preserved as crenulations within the Q-domain microlithons of the S2 schistosity and is demonstrably non-parallel to bedding. F3 folds are widely developed in S2 and, to a lesser extent, in bedding. S3 crenulation cleavage is sporadically developed but can be intense locally. A major antiformal fold exists in the NHG near Rhoscolyn. This fold is of D3 age since it clearly deforms S2 schistosity and is consistent with the vergence of F3 minor structures. All planar structures are deformed by folds of D4 age. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

A section across the Haast Schist Group in the Southern Alps of New Zealand shows a sequence of metamorphosed eugeosynclinal sediments. Meta-basic rocks (greenschists) have been studied to determine the nature of the actinolite-hornblende transition and to investigate the change in amphibole composition through the Metamorphic Facies Series.Electron microprobe analyses of 21 representative amphiboles, including 3 amphibole pairs can be shown to support theories of a miscibility break in the calciferous amphibole solid solution series. The existence of a miscibility break is further supported by the widespread appearance, even at low metamorphic grades, of exsolution lamellae in actinolite and hornblende amphiboles.Amphibolite facies amphiboles differ from greenschist facies amphiboles in that (a) there are increased amounts of Ti entering the lattice and (b) that there is an increased occupancy of the A site at higher metamorphic grades. 相似文献

Schists with the mineral assemblage quartz-albite-dolomite-greenbiotite-aegirine-rie-beckite, occur as thin bands ? to I metrewide, within albite-epidote greenschists and garnet-plagioclasequartzo-feldspathic schists of the oligoclase zone of SouthWestland, New Zealand. Optical and chemical date show that the aegirine contains anegligible amount of the jadeite molecule whilst the opticsof the riebeckite indicate that it is a member of the arfvedsonite-riebeckiteseries. A typical schist has a high soda content, a molecularratio Na2O+K2O? Al2O3>1, a high oxidation ratio, and a lowlime content. These data, together with the fact that the calculatedmineral assemblage of the molecular mesonorm is identical withthat of the rocks, are taken as evidence that the schists resultfrom recrystallization of a rock with unusual chemical compositionunder P-T conditions on the boundary between those giving riseto the greenschist facies and the almandine-amphibolite facies. 相似文献

The paper reviews the rationale for the study of mental maps and sùggests that such maps have a role to play in tourism planning. Analysis of freehand sketch maps drawn by a sample of 145 visitors to Coffs Harbour, Australia, showed that visitors have quite limited knowledge of recreational opportunities. Clear differences emerged between the maps drawn by respondents living in caravan parks and motels and those staying with family friends, or in up-market resorts. The maps of the latter were very rudimentary and were characterised by a lack of connection between the map elements. The implications in terms of signposting, wayfinding, and planning are discussed. 相似文献
