A self-similar, hydrodynamic model is derived and used to generate SNe light-curves. It is found that the temporal development of the SN light-curve is governed by a ‘dynamic time’ parameter, and that the observed near-identical, normalized light-curves of Type Ia SNe suggest that they have evolved from progenitor stars of the same central density. Fitting the model parameters to observed Type Ia SNe light-curves suggests that the SNe have originated from the same mass progenitors. The model also provides a theoretical basis for the Phillips observation relating the absolute magnitude of the Type Ia SN to its half-width. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A new high-accuracy velocity curve is presented for the bright southern Cepheid β Doradus (HR 1922), and an investigation into the long-term stability of the velocity curve is made. An upper limit of 0.57 km s−1 is placed on cycle-to-cycle variations. This work is compared with a similar analysis previously applied to the long-period Cepheid ℓ Carinae (HR 3884).   Using a near-infrared variant of the Barnes–Evans method, the mean radius of and distance to β Dor are found to be R  = 67.8 ± 0.7 R⊙ and d  = 349 ± 4 pc. The systematic errors in these parameters are less than 3 per cent. If these systematics can be resolved, through the development of advanced theoretical models and/or the direct measurement of angular diameters, a calibration of the cosmic distance scale to better than 1 per cent can be achieved.  相似文献

An analysis of the V band light curves using the Wilson-Devinney code for NW Aps, BV 996 and BV 435 is provided. NW Aps and BV 996 have among the lowest mass ratios known and are of A-type while BV 435 has a large mass ratio of 2.185 and is the W-Type. A review of the astrophysical quantities suggests that the systems generally demonstrate properties typical of their subtypes.  相似文献

An analysis of the V band light curves using the Wilson–Devinney code for GZ Pup, AV Pup and II Aps is provided. The three systems are found to be of W type with mass ratios of 0.37, 0.8 and 0.295, respectively. A review of the astrophysical quantities suggests that the systems generally demonstrate properties typical of the W-type contact binaries.  相似文献

Highly magnified lensed galaxies allow us to probe the morphological and spectroscopic properties of high-redshift stellar systems in great detail. However, such objects are rare, and there are only a handful of lensed galaxies that are bright enough for a high-resolution spectroscopic study with current instrumentation. We report the discovery of a new massive lensing cluster, SDSS J120923.7+264047, at z = 0.558. Present around the cluster core, at angular distances of up to ∼40 arcsec, are many arcs and arc candidates, presumably due to lensing of background galaxies by the cluster gravitational potential. One of the arcs, 21 arcsec long, has an r -band magnitude of 20, making it one of the brightest known lensed galaxies. We obtained a low-resolution spectrum of this galaxy, using the Keck-I telescope, and found it is at redshift of z = 1.018.  相似文献

The physical parameters of the stars in the central region of the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904) were determined from UBV photometry using Kurucz's synthetic flux distributions and some empirical relations. It is found that the bluest horizontal branch (HB) stars have higher luminosities than predicted by canonical zero-age horizontal branch models. Parameters of the mass distribution on the HB stars are determined. It is shown that the gap in the blue HB previously reported by Markov et al. in Paper I is probably a statistical fluctuation.  相似文献

The variation in properties of Type Ia supernovae, the thermonuclear explosions of Chandrasekhar-mass carbon–oxygen white dwarfs, is caused by different nucleosynthetic outcomes of these explosions, which can be traced from the distribution of abundances in the ejecta. The composition stratification of the spectroscopically normal but rapidly declining SN 2004eo is studied by performing spectrum synthesis of a time-series of spectra obtained before and after maximum, and of one nebular spectrum obtained about eight months later. Early-time spectra indicate that the outer ejecta are dominated by oxygen and silicon, and contain other intermediate-mass elements, implying that the outer part of the star was subject only to partial burning. In the inner part, nuclear statistical equilibrium (NSE) material dominates, but the production of 56Ni was limited to  ∼0.43 ± 0.05   M  . An innermost zone containing  ∼0.25   M  of stable Fe-group material is also present. The relatively small amount of NSE material synthesized by SN 2004eo explains both the dimness and the rapidly evolving light curve of this supernova.  相似文献

We report 36.6 h of time-resolved CCD photometry of the DB white dwarf star PG 2246+121 and the discovery that it is a new pulsating variable. Analysis of our compact single-site data set allowed the detection of three mode multiplets, two triplets at 256 and 329 s, respectively, and one doublet at 286 s. The frequency splitting within those structures is exactly the same within the length and accuracy of our data set.
We argue that these multiplets are the result of non-radial g-mode pulsations, most probably of spherical degree ℓ=1, which then yields a formal stellar rotation period of 2.00±0.12 d. We suggest that the excited modes are three consecutive radial overtones of order 3–7, most likely k =4,5,6. This discovery's impact on the understanding of pulsating DB white dwarfs is discussed.  相似文献

We present radio observations of the source G332.5−5.6, a candidate supernova remnant (SNR). Observations have been performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at two frequencies, 1.4 and 2.4 GHz. Our results confirm that G332.5−5.6 is an SNR, with a spectral index  α=−0.7 ± 0.2  for the whole source and an average fractional polarization of ∼35 per cent at 2.4 GHz. The central component is coincident with extended X-ray emission, and the distance to the SNR is estimated to be ∼3.4 kpc. Based on its radio and X-ray morphology, this SNR should be classified as a composite, and we suggest that it belongs to a trident-shaped subclass like G291.0−0.1.  相似文献

High-resolution, spatially-resolved profiles of H α , He  ii λ 6560 and [O  iii ] λ 5007 and deep narrow-band CCD images in the H α and [O  iii ] λ 5007 emission lines have been obtained of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 4361. In addition, VLA-DnC λ 3.6-cm continuum observations are presented. This material allows one to explore in unprecedented detail the morphology and kinematics of this PN. The morphology of this object is complex given the highly filamentary structure of the envelope, which is confirmed to possess a low mass. The halo has a high expansion velocity that yields incompatible kinematic and evolutionary ages, unless previous acceleration of the nebular expansion is considered. However, the most remarkable result from the present observations is the detection of a bipolar outflow in NGC 4361, which is unexpected in a PN with a Population II low-mass-core progenitor. It is shown that shocks resulting from the interaction of the bipolar outflow with the outer shell are able to provide an additional heating source in this nebula.  相似文献

We present X-ray, broad-band optical and low-frequency radio observations of the bright type IIP supernova SN 2004et. The Chandra X-ray Observatory observed the supernova at three epochs, and the optical coverage spans a period of ∼470 d since explosion. The X-ray emission softens with time, and we characterize the X-ray luminosity evolution as   L X∝ t −0.4  . We use the observed X-ray luminosity to estimate a mass-loss rate for the progenitor star of  ∼2 × 10−6 M yr−1  . The optical light curve shows a pronounced plateau lasting for about 110 d. Temporal evolution of photospheric radius and colour temperature during the plateau phase is determined by making blackbody fits. We estimate the ejected mass of 56Ni to be  0.06 ± 0.03 M  . Using the expressions of Litvinova & Nadëzhin we estimate an explosion energy of  (0.98 ± 0.25) × 1051 erg  . We also present a single epoch radio observation of SN 2004et. We compare this with the predictions of the model proposed by Chevalier, Fransson & Nymark. These multiwavelength studies suggest a main-sequence progenitor mass of  ∼20 M  for SN 2004et.  相似文献

We present new determinations of bolometric corrections and effective temperature scales as a function of infrared optical colours, using a large data base of photometric observations of about 6500 Population II giants in Galactic globular clusters (GGCs), covering a wide range in metallicity (−2.0 < [Fe/H] < 0.0).   New relations for BC K versus ( V  −  K ) , ( J  −  K ) and BC V versus ( B  −  V ), ( V  −  I ), ( V  −  J ), and new calibrations for T eff, using both an empirical relation and model atmospheres, are provided.   Moreover, an empirical relation to derive the R parameter of the infrared flux method as a function of the stellar temperature is also presented.  相似文献

We have carried out BVR photometric and H spectroscopic observations of the star HD 61396 during 1998 March 20 to 1999 April 3. We have discovered regular optical photometric variability from this star, with an inferred period of 31.95±0.10 d, and an amplitude of 0.18 mag. A possible period of 35.34±0.12 d, as determined with Hipparcos , cannot be completely ruled out, however. Modelling of its photometric light curve with two circular spots indicates that 521 per cent of the stellar surface is covered by dark starspots which are 830 K cooler than the surrounding photosphere, and produce the observed rotational modulation of the optical flux. Optical spectroscopy reveals a variable H emission feature, indicating that it is an unusually active star.
In addition, we have analysed archival X-ray data of HD 61396, obtained from serendipitous observations with the ROSAT X-ray observatory, and we also discuss the radio properties of this star, based on both published Green Bank and unpublished VLA observations. The strong photometric variability and H emission, the relatively hard X-ray spectrum, and the high X-ray and radio luminosities imply that HD 61396 is most likely to be a member of the RS CVn class of evolved active binary stars. Its X-ray and radio luminosities place it among the five most luminous active binaries detected so far.  相似文献

G353.9−2.0 is a likely Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) identified from a visual inspection of the National Radio Astronomy Observations (NRAO) Very Large Array (VLA) Sky Survey (NVSS) observations in the Galactic plane. It shows a shell structure, about 13 arcmin in diameter, with a central extended source. VLA observations of G353.9−2.0 at 1.4 GHz, with a resolution of ≈40 arcsec, and a significantly better sensitivity than the NVSS observations, are presented here, together with observations at 327 MHz and observations of the central source at 8.4 GHz. These new observations and existing results from the literature are discussed. G353.9−2.0 is confirmed as a SNR, and the central source as a likely extragalactic double source.  相似文献
