Salinization in coastal aquifers of arid zones: an example from Santo Domingo,Baja California Sur,Mexico
Groundwater quality in the Santo Domingo Irrigation District area in Baja California Sur, Mexico, indicates the presence of various salinization processes, (1) the geological matter of marine origin comprising the aquifer material suffers diagenetic effects due to its interaction with groundwater of low salinity, (2) the effects of intensive agriculture practices produce effluents that infiltrate to the saturated zone, and (3) the extraction of groundwater causes modifications in the natural flow system induces lateral flow of seawater from the coast line. However, groundwater management has been carried out with the belief that the latter is the main source of salinization. This has resulted in a policy of installing wells increasingly far from the coast, which is not solving the problem. Irrigation-return and seawater that remains in the geological units have been identified as major sources of salinization. Controls should be imposed when installing wells in contact with clayey units that form the base of the aquifer. Extracted groundwater consists of a mixture of (1) groundwater of relatively low salinity that circulates in the aquifer and (2) an extreme member with salinity different to seawater contained mainly in formations that have low permeability, which limits the aquifer underneath. The geochemistry of carbonates and cation-exchange reactions (both direct and reverse) control the concentration of Ca, Mg, Na, and HCO3, as well as pH values. The concentrations of dissolved trace elements (F, Li, Ba, Sr) suggest that the extreme saline member is different from the average seawater composition. A distinction between the salinization caused by farming practices and that blamed on seawater is defined by the use of NO3.

Evaluation and numerical modeling of seawater intrusion in the Gaza aquifer (Palestine)
A numerical assessment of seawater intrusion in Gaza, Palestine, has been achieved applying a 3-D variable density groundwater flow model. A two-stage finite difference simulation algorithm was used in steady state and transient models. SEAWAT computer code was used for simulating the spatial and temporal evolution of hydraulic heads and solute concentrations of groundwater. A regular finite difference grid with a 400 m2 cell in the horizontal plane, in addition to a 12-layer model were chosen. The model has been calibrated under steady state and transient conditions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed schemes successfully simulate the intrusion mechanism. Two pumpage schemes were designed to use the calibrated model for prediction of future changes in water levels and solute concentrations in the groundwater for a planning period of 17 years. The results show that seawater intrusion would worsen in the aquifer if the current rates of groundwater pumpage continue. The alternative, to eliminate pumpage in the intruded area, to moderate pumpage rates from water supply wells far from the seashore and to increase the aquifer replenishment by encouraging the implementation of suitable solutions like artificial recharge, may limit significantly seawater intrusion and reduce the current rate of decline of the water levels.

The Bou-Areg plain in the Mediterranean coast at the North-eastern of Morocco is characterized by a semi-arid climate. The
aquifer consists of two sedimentary formations of Plio-quaternary age: the upper formation of fine silts and the lower one
of coarse silts with sand and gravels. The aquifer is underlain by marly bedrock of Miocene age that dips toward the coastal
lagoon of Bou-Areg. The hydrodynamic characteristics vary between 10−4 and 10−3 m/s; and transmissivities range between 10−4 and 10−1 m2/s. The general direction of flow is SW to NE, toward the lagoon. The aquifer is crossed by the river Selouane, which also
ends in the lagoon. The groundwater is characterized by a high salinity that can reach 7.5 g/l. The highest values are observed
in the upstream and in the downstream sectors of the aquifer. The temporal evolution of the physico-chemical parameters depends
on the climatic conditions and piezometric variations. The analysis of the spatio-temporal distribution of the physico-chemical
parameters suggests different sources of groundwater salinization: the seawater intrusion, the influence of marly gypsum-bearing
terrains, and the influence of anthropogenic products as the agricultural fertilizers, which cause great nitrate concentrations
that vary between 80 and 140 mg/l.

Evolution of the groundwater environment under a long-term exploitation in the coastal area near Zhanjiang, China
Aquifers consisting of unconsolidated sediments in the coastal area near Zhanjiang in southern China are grouped into the
shallow, middle-deep and deep aquifer systems. Groundwater exploitation began in the 1950s in this district and has increased
from year to year since 1980. Measurements of groundwater levels and monitoring data of groundwater chemistry at some 60 wells
since 1981 are examined to analyze the evolution of hydrodynamics and hydrochemistry in the coastal aquifers. The results
indicate that groundwater levels in the middle-deep and deep aquifer systems have fallen continuously and the extents of the
depression cones in water levels have increased in the past two decades, even though the water levels recovered to some degree
during the period of 1997–2001. In 2004, the lowest water levels in the middle-deep and deep aquifer systems were 23.58 and
21.84 m below sea level, respectively. The groundwater has TDS ranging from 40 to 550 mg/L, and is of low pH, commonly varies
between 4 and 7. Concentrations of total iron and manganese exceed the concentration limits of the drinking water standards.
The hardness is in the range of 10–250 mg/L. Chloride contents of the groundwater range from 10 to 60 mg/L. The chloride and
TDS do not show systematically increasing trends. Although the water levels in the exploitation center near the coast are
significantly lower than the sea level and the depression cones of water levels in the middle-deep and deep aquifer systems
have expanded to the sea, sea water intrusion has not been observed until recently. This phenomenon is quite unique in the
coastal area near Zhanjiang.

Fluoride, nitrate and water hardness in groundwater supplied to the rural communities of Ensenada County,Baja California,Mexico
L. W. Daesslé L. Ruiz-Montoya H. J. Tobschall R. Chandrajith V. F. Camacho-Ibar L. G. Mendoza-Espinosa A. L. Quintanilla-Montoya K. C. Lugo-Ibarra 《Environmental Geology》2009,58(2):419-429
The hydrogeochemistry of 26 wells belonging to ten different aquifers in the county of Ensenada, Baja California, is studied.
These wells are all used to supply the rural communities in the region, which comprise ~37,000 inhabitants, excluding the
city of Ensenada. High total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations (maximum 7.35 g l−1) indicate that salt is a ubiquitous contaminant in the aquifers due to seawater intrusion. The aquifers that support extensive
agriculture activities (Maneadero, San Quintín, San Simón and El Rosario) are characterized by higher N–NO3 concentrations (maximum 20 mg l−1) derived from fertilizers. Fluoride concentrations exceed the 1.5 mg l−1 Mexican official limit in only four wells. The enrichments of F− in the southern aquifers are thought to be associated to water–rock interactions controlled mainly by Na–Ca equilibrium reactions
with fluorite, as suggested from high dissolved Na concentrations in these waters. In the northern aquifer of Maneadero, no
enrichment of Na is found and a geothermal source for F− is likely. Water is hard to moderately hard, with Ca/Mg ratios >1. Although drinking water directly from the tap is not a
common practice in these localities, most sources have concentrations of major ions and TDS that exceed the Mexican official
limits.

This paper refers to the development of a conceptual model for the management of a coastal aquifer in northern Greece. The research presents the interpretation and analysis of the quantitative (groundwater level recordings and design of piezometric maps) regime and the formation of the upcone within the area of investigation. Additionally it provides the elaboration of the results of chemical analyses of groundwater samples (physicochemical parameters, major chemical constituents and heavy metals and trace elements) of the area which were taken in three successive irrigation periods (July–August 2003, July–August 2004 and July 2005), in order to identify areas of aquifer vulnerability. The study identifies the areas where ion exchange phenomena occur, as well as the parts of the aquifer where the qualitative degradation of the aquifer system is enhanced. The paper, finally, assesses the lack of any scientific groundwater resources management of the area by the local water authorities, as well as the current practices of the existing pumping conditions scheme as applied by groundwater users. An erratum to this article can be found at 相似文献

Monitoring and methods to analyse the groundwater quality degradation risk in coastal karstic aquifers (Apulia,Southern Italy)
A multi-methodological approach based on monitoring and spatio-temporal analysis of groundwater quality changes is proposed.
The presented tools are simple, quick and cost-effective to give service to all sorts of users. The chief purpose of the monitoring
network is the detection of the piezometric or potenziometric level in the aquifer. The spatial and multi-temporal analysis
of usual chemical and physical data provides both an assessment of the spatial vulnerability of the aquifer to seawater intrusion,
defining a salinity threshold between fresh groundwater and brackish groundwater and of the water quality trend in terms of
salinity. The evaluation of the salinity trend or of salinity-correlated parameters highlights the effects of groundwater
mismanagement. The multiparameter logging provides a rapid groundwater quality classification for each well. The whole approach
allows evaluating the effects of current management criteria and designing more appropriate management targets. The Apulian
karstic coastal aquifers have been selected as a case study (Southern Italy). Three types of aquifer zones can be distinguished:
(1) areas with low vulnerability to seawater intrusion, (2) areas with high vulnerability and (3) areas with variable vulnerability
in which the salt degradation largely depends on the ability to manage the well discharge. The water quality degradation caused
by seawater intrusion appears to be a combined effect of an anomalous succession of drought periods observed from about 1980
onwards and increased groundwater pumping, particularly during drought periods. A management criterion based on aquifer zones
is proposed.

Study of geothermal water intrusion due to groundwater exploitation in the Puebla Valley aquifer system, Mexico

Significant intrusion of geothermal water into fresh groundwater takes place in the Puebla Valley aquifer system, Mexico. The decline in the potentiometric surface due to the overexploitation of the groundwater induces this intrusion. This hydrological system comprises three aquifers located in Plio-Quaternary volcanic sediments and Mesozoic calcareous rocks. The hydraulic balance of the aquifer shows that the annual output exceeds the natural inputs by 12 million m3. Between 1973 and 2002, a drop in the potentiometric surface, with an 80 m cone of depression, was identified in a 5-km-wide area located southwest of the city of Puebla. Chemical analyses performed on water samples since 1990 have shown an increase in total dissolved solids (TDS) of more than 500 mg/L, coinciding with the region showing a cone of depression in the potentiometric surface. A three-dimensional flow and transport model, based on the hydrogeological and geophysical studies, was computed by using the MODFLOW and MT3D software. This model reproduces the evolution of the aquifer system during the last 30 years and predicts for 2010 an additional drawdown in the potentiometric surface of 15 m, and an increase in the geothermal water intrusion.

Fort Morgan Peninsula is an attached portion of a dynamic barrier complex in the northern Gulf of Mexico and is a large tourist
area that brings in a significant amount of revenue for Alabama. Many of the hotels and tourist attractions depend on the
groundwater as their water supply. The over-withdrawal of groundwater and saltwater intrustion will have a negative impact
on the ecology, tourism and economy if groundwater resources are not properly monitored and managed. In this study a calibrated
groundwater flow model was used to analyze the sustainability of groundwater resources at Fort Morgan Peninsula. Detailed
flow budgets were prepared to check the various components of inflow and outflow under different water use and climatic conditions.
The results indicated the locations where groundwater was over-pumped and subjected to saltwater intrusion, or will be subjected
to saltwater intrusion under a range of projected water use and climatic conditions.

The evolution of groundwater rights and groundwater management in New Mexico and the western United States
Historically, rights in water originated as public property and only later became individualized rights to utilize the public resource, in a manner consistent with the public welfare needs of society, but protected by principles of property law. Five basic regulatory systems for rights in groundwater in the United States have evolved to date. The problems raised by the hydrologic differences between groundwater hydraulically connected to stream systems and groundwater in non-replenished aquifers have been resolved to some extent by a couple of leading court cases. Numerical modeling and other technical methodologies have also evolved to evaluate the scientific issues raised by the different hydrologic conditions, but these are not immune from criticism. The current role of aquifers is evolving into that of storage facilities for recycled water, and their utilization in this manner may be expanded even further in the future. The policy implications of the choices relating to joint management of ground and surface water cannot be overstated. As this paper demonstrates, proactive administration of future groundwater depletions that affect stream systems is essential to the ultimate ability to plan for exploitation, management and utilization of water resources in a rational way that coordinates present and future demand with the reality of scarcity of supply. The examples utilized in this paper demonstrate the need for capacity building, not just to develop good measurement techniques, or to train talented lawyers and judges to write good laws, but also for practical professional water managers to keep the process on a rational course, avoiding limitless exploitation of the resource as well as conservative protectionism that forever precludes its use.

Assessment of groundwater chemistry in a coastal region (Kunsan, Korea) having complex contaminant sources: a stoichiometric approach
Kangjoo Kim Natarajan Rajmohan Hyun Jung Kim Gab-Soo Hwang Min Joe Cho 《Environmental Geology》2004,46(6-7):763-774
Groundwater chemistry in a coastal region (Kunsan, Korea) having complex contaminant sources was investigated. Water analysis data for 197 groundwater samples collected from the uniformly distributed sixty-six wells were used. Chemical analysis results indicate that groundwaters show wide concentration ranges in major inorganic ions, reflecting complex hydrochemical processes. Due to the complexity of groundwater chemistry, the samples were classified into four groups based on Cl and NO3 concentrations and the processes controlling water chemistry were evaluated based on the reaction stoichiometry. The results explained the importance of mineral weathering, anthropogenic activities (nitrification and oxidation of organic matters), and Cl-salt inputs (seawater, deicer, NaCl, etc.) on groundwater chemistry. It was revealed that mineral dissolution is the major process controlling the water chemistry of the low Cl and NO3 group (Group 1). Groundwaters high in NO3 (Groups 2 and 4) are acidic in nature, and their chemistry is largely influenced by nitrification, oxidation of organic matters and mineral dissolution. In the case of chloride rich waters (Group 3), groundwater chemistry is highly influenced by mineral weathering and seawater intrusion associated with cation-exchange reactions.

The Quaternary coastal plain aquifer down gradient of the Wadi Watir catchment is the main source of potable groundwater in the arid region of south Sinai, Egypt. The scarcity of rainfall over the last decade, combined with high groundwater pumping rates, have resulted in water-quality degradation in the main well field and in wells along the coast. Understanding the sources of groundwater salinization and amount of average annual recharge is critical for developing sustainable groundwater management strategies for the long-term prevention of groundwater quality deterioration. A combination of geochemistry, conservative ions (Cl and Br), and isotopic tracers (87/86Sr, δ81Br, δ37Cl), in conjunction with groundwater modeling, is an effective method to assess and manage groundwater resources in the Wadi Watir delta aquifers. High groundwater salinity, including high Cl and Br concentrations, is recorded inland in the deep drilled wells located in the main well field and in wells along the coast. The range of Cl/Br ratios for shallow and deep groundwaters in the delta (∼50–97) fall between the end member values of the recharge water that comes from the up gradient watershed, and evaporated seawater of marine origin, which is significantly different than the ratio in modern seawater (228). The 87/86Sr and δ81Br isotopic values were higher in the recharge water (0.70,723 < 87/86Sr < 0.70,894, +0.94 < δ81Br < +1.28‰), and lower in the deep groundwater (0.70,698 < 87/86Sr < 0.70,705, +0.22‰ < δ81Br < +0.41‰). The δ37Cl isotopic values were lower in the recharge water (−0.48 < δ37Cl < −0.06‰) and higher in the deep groundwater (−0.01 < δ37Cl < +0.22‰). The isotopic values of strontium, chloride, and bromide in groundwater from the Wadi Watir delta aquifers indicate that the main groundwater recharge source comes from the up gradient catchment along the main stream channel entering the delta. The solute-weighted mass balance mixing models show that groundwater in the main well field contains 4–10% deep saline groundwater, and groundwater in some wells along the coast contain 2–6% seawater and 18–29% deep saline groundwater.A three-dimensional, variable-density, flow-and-transport SEAWAT model was developed using groundwater isotopes (87Sr/86Sr, δ37Cl and δ81Br) and calibrated using historical records of groundwater level and salinity. δ18O was used to normalize the evaporative effect on shallow groundwater salinity for model calibration. The model shows how groundwater salinity and hydrologic data can be used in SEAWAT to understand recharge mechanisms, estimate groundwater recharge rates, and simulate the upwelling of deep saline groundwater and seawater intrusion. The model indicates that most of the groundwater recharge occurs near the outlet of the main channel. Average annual recharge to delta alluvial aquifers for 1982 to 2009 is estimated to be 2.16 × 106 m3/yr. The main factors that control groundwater salinity are overpumping and recharge availability.

In this study, hydrogeologic and hydrochemical information from the Mersin-Erdemli groundwater system were integrated and
used to determine the main factors and mechanisms controlling the chemistry of groundwaters in the area and anthropogenic
factors presently affecting them. The PHREEQC geochemical modeling demonstrated that relatively few phases are required to
derive water chemistry in the area. In a broad sense, the reactions responsible for the hydrochemical evolution in the area
fall into four categories: (1) silicate weathering reactions; (2) dissolution of salts; (3) precipitation of calcite, amorphous
silica and kaolinite; (4) ion exchange. As determined by multivariate statistical analysis, anthropogenic factors show seasonality
in the area where most contaminated waters related to fertilizer and fungicide applications that occur during early summer
season.

The need for more agricultural or residential land has encouraged reclamation at the coastal areas of Korea since 1200 ad (approximately). The groundwaters of these reclaimed areas could be expected to reveal hydrogeochemical properties different
from those of areas directly affected by seawater intrusion. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the salinization
of shallow groundwater in a coastal reclaimed area and to identify the effect of land reclamation on groundwater quality.
Major cations and anions, iodide, total organic carbon, δD, δ
18O and δ
13C were measured to assist the hydrogeochemical analysis. Chloride, δD and δ
18O data clearly show that the Na–Cl type water results from mixing of groundwater with seawater. In particular, the δD and δ
18O of Ca+Mg–Cl+NO3 type groundwaters are close to the meteoric water line, but Na–Cl type waters enriched in chloride are 18O-enriched with respect to the meteoric water line. Meanwhile, carbon isotopic data and I/Cl ratios strongly suggest that
there are various sources of salinity. The δ
13C values of Na–Cl type groundwaters are generally similar to those of Ca+Mg–Cl+NO3 type waters, which are depleted in 13C with respect to seawater. I/Cl ratios of Na–Cl type groundwater are 10–100 times higher than that of seawater. Because the
reclamation has incorporated a large amount of organic matter, it provides optimum conditions for the occurrence of redox
processes in the groundwater system. Therefore, the salinization of groundwater in the study area seems to be controlled not
only by saltwater intrusion but also by other effects, such as those caused by residual salts and organic matter in the reclaimed
sediments.

The only source of drinking water in Vilnius City, Lithuania's capital, is groundwater. It can be supplied from 20 wellfields situated in the City or its environs. About half of them (11) are located in the valley of the Neris River crossing the City. The exploited aquifers were formed by melting continental glaciers and modified by the river. Until 1990 groundwater resources had not been conserved—the per capita consumption for domestic use in Vilnius reached 350 l/day. After 1990, due to the increasing cost of supplying drinking water, its consumption was reduced by a factor of three. As pumping rates of wellfields in Vilnius were increased or decreased, the groundwater quality was changed significantly. It is mainly affected by the surface water and shallow aquifers of the hydrologic system. The unoxidised organic matter that enters the exploitable aquifers from rivers and polluted shallow groundwater consumes scarce oxygen resources, thus creating anoxic conditions favourable for increasing the accumulation of iron, manganese and ammonium. Modelling and monitoring data show that the concentrations of sulphates and chlorides in Vilnius wellfields indicate not only the rise of brackish water from below, but also downward seepage of polluted surface water into the aquifers.

The Guadalupe Valley aquifer is the only water source for one of the most important wine industries in Mexico, and also the main public water supply for the nearby city of Ensenada. This groundwater is monitored for major ion, N-NO3, P-PO4, Fe, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Sb concentrations, as well as TDS, pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature. High concentrations of N-NO3 (26 mg l−1), Se (70 μg l−1), Mo (18 μg l−1) and Cu (4.3 μg l−1) suggest that groundwater is being polluted by the use of fertilizers only in the western section of the aquifer, known as El Porvenir graben. Unlike the sites located near the main recharge area to the East of the aquifer, the water in El Porvenir graben has low tritium concentrations (<1.9 TU), indicating a pre-modern age, and thus longer water residence time. No significant variations in water quality (generally <10%) were detected throughout 2001–2002 in the aquifer, suggesting that reduced rainfall and recharge during this dry period did not significantly affect water quality. However, the wells nearest to the main recharge area in the Eastern aquifer show a slight but constant increase in TDS with time, probably as a result of the high (∼200 L S−1) uninterrupted extraction of water at this specific recharge site. Relatively high As concentrations for the aquifer (10.5 μg l−1) are only found near the northern limit of the basin associated with a geological fault.

Evaluation of groundwater quality in coastal areas: implications for sustainable agriculture
Seawater intrusion is a problem in the coastal areas of Korea. Most productive agricultural fields are in the western and
southern coastal areas of the country where irrigation predominantly relies on groundwater. Seawater intrusion has affected
agricultural productivity. To evaluate progressive encroachment of saline water, the Korean government established a seawater
intrusion monitoring well network, especially in the western and southern part of the peninsula. Automatic water levels and
EC monitoring and periodic chemical analysis of groundwater help track salinization. Salinization of fresh groundwater is
highly associated with groundwater withdrawal. A large proportion of the groundwaters are classified as Na–Cl and Ca–Cl types.
The Na–Cl types represent effects of seawater intrusion. The highest EC level was over 1.6 km inland and high Cl values were
observed up to 1.2 km inland. Lower ratios of Na/Cl and SO4/Cl than seawater values indicate the seawater encroachment. A linear relation between Na and Cl represents simple mixing
of the fresh groundwater with the seawater. The saline Na–Cl typed groundwaters showed Br/Cl ratios similar to or less than
seawater values. The Ca–HCO3 type groundwaters had the highest Br/Cl ratios. Substantial proportions of the groundwaters showed potential for salinity
and should be better managed for sustainable agriculture.

Water extractions in coastal areas have to deal with salt water intrusion and lowering of hydraulic heads in valuable ecosystems.
Therefore, sustainable management of fresh water resources in these areas is crucial. This is illustrated here with two water
extractions in the western Belgian coastal plain which extract groundwater from a phreatic dune aquifer. One water extraction
faced problems with salt water intrusion, while lowering of hydraulic heads was an issue for both. To remedy the salt water
intrusion, it was found that decreasing the extraction rate was the only solution. To offset this and to increase hydraulic
heads around both extractions, it was decided to artificially recharge the aquifer of the second extraction with tertiary
treated wastewater. By taking these interventions, the combined production capacity of the water extractions was increased
with 56% whereas 27% less water was extracted from the dune aquifer itself. Extraction history and the effects of interventions
are illustrated for both water extractions with water quality data and fresh water head observations. A more detailed insight
in groundwater flow and fresh–salt water distribution in the aquifer is provided by simulating the evolution of the water
extractions with a 3D density dependent groundwater flow model.

Boron, chloride, sulfate, δD, δ18O, and 3H concentrations in surface water and groundwater samples from the Sulphur Bank Mercury Mine (SBMM), California, USA were
used to examine geochemical processes and provide constraints on evaporation and groundwater flow. SBMM is an abandoned sulfur
and mercury mine with an underlying hydrothermal system, adjacent to Clear Lake, California. Results for non-3H tracers (i.e., boron, chloride, sulfate, δD, and δ18O) identify contributions from six water types at SBMM. Processes including evaporation, mixing, hydrothermal water input
and possible isotopic exchange with hydrothermal gases are also discerned. Tritium data indicate that hydrothermal waters
and other deep groundwaters are likely pre-bomb (before ~1952) in age while most other waters were recharged after ~1990.
A boron-based steady-state reservoir model of the Herman Impoundment pit lake indicates that 71–79% of its input is from meteoric
water with the remainder from hydrothermal contributions. Results for groundwater samples from six shallow wells over a 6–month
period for δD and δ18O suggests that water from Herman Impoundment is diluted another 3% to more than 40% by infiltrating meteoric water, as it
leaves the site. Results for this investigation show that environmental tracers are an effective tool to understand the SBMM
hydrogeologic regime.

The Valle de Toluca aquifer, located in the Highlands of Mexico, is subject to intensive exploitation to meet the water demand in the valley, as well as for part of Mexico City. This intensive exploitation has produced a decline in groundwater level, land subsidence problems and a decrease in river and spring flows. This study is aimed at determining the extent to which the intensive groundwater abstraction is able to affect and modify the chemical characteristics of the water, using statistical techniques and historical data on the main physico-chemical parameters. Some changes in the chemical characteristics have been verified; initial water abstractions were mainly derived from a local flow zone (rainwater recharge and lateral flows from other aquifers), but currently the chemical characteristics are those of a regional flow zone, revealed by waters of sodium bicarbonate type. An increase in nitrate content has also occurred, although only occasionally is the limit for potable water (50 mg NO3- L-1) exceeded.
