Near the city of Greiz in Eastern Thuringia, Germany, there is a stratigraphically non-coherent breccia encased in shales from the Lower Carboniferous that includes larger blocks of Triassic sediments, the so-called Triasscholle. The origin of this breccia has previously been interpreted tectonically. The geophysical methods of geomagnetics and gravimetry have recently been applied to the area. We found that the formation is characterised by a lack of a magnetic anomaly, but it has a distinct, spatially small gravity anomaly of approximately ?2 mGal and whose shape hints at a structure about twice the previously suggested size. Most of the geological information available is derived from older drill cores located in the southwest part near the previously assumed margin. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigations on drill core samples from the polymict breccia at different depths show a cataclastic deformation of carbonate grains in the upper parts, while we find hypidiomorphic and idiomorphic zoned carbonate grains featuring a dolomitic/calcitic composition within the core as well as rims of ankeritic composition hinting at intense hydrothermal influence. The breccia itself contains granitoidic xenoliths from greater depths, which indicate upward transport processes. This and plastic deformation below 95m depth, both on macroscopic and microscopic scales, indicates an anomalous increase of heat with depth and material transport from depth. Judging from the gravimetric minimum and the SEM investigations on the breccia samples, we assume the Triasscholle near Greiz to be a deeply eroded maar-diatreme volcano. From pollen analysis results on the matrix, the formation can be considered Santonian or younger in age (≤85 Ma). Most interesting are the alteration of the mainly carbonatic components of the breccia, the deep erosion level of the diatreme and the multidisciplinary approach towards the reinterpretation of this formerly misinterpreted structure.  相似文献

Data are presented relating to volcanic series in the Belogolovskii Massif, Sredinnyi Range, Kamchatka. We discuss new geochronologic data, the distributions of rare elements and platinum elements in the rocks, and list the isotope characteristics of volcanic series with normal and moderate alkalinities. We show that the Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene rocks that belong to the moderate alkaline series of the Belogolovskii volcanic massif are different from rocks in the normally alkaline series of the Late Miocene to Middle Pliocene volcanogenic basement in having higher concentrations of the HFSE and LILE components. We propose a model for the generation of moderate alkaline magmas involving a heterogeneous depleted and a heterogeneous enriched source of material. According to the isotope data, one of these sources may be the subducted oceanic lithosphere of the Pacific and the Commander-Islands type, while the other source was recycled material of the Indian MORB type.  相似文献

We proposed a geological and petrologic model for the generation of the Belogolovskii Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene volcanic massif. We identified two petrochemical series of rocks with varying alkalinities, viz., normal and moderate. The evolution of volcanic products and the mineralogic composition of rocks of varying alkalinities provide evidence that the sources of parent magmas are spatially independent and reside at different depths. Crystallization differentiation is the leading process that is responsible for the generation of the initial melts that give rise to the range of rocks within a series. The evolution of the alkaline basaltic magma occurred stepwise, producing autonomous daughter melts with the following compositions: trachybasalt-trachyandesite-trachyte-trachyrhyolite and comendite. These melts were localized in inter-mediate magma chambers at different depths.  相似文献

Phreatic eruptions occurred at the Meakandake volcano in 1988, 1996, 1998, 2006, and 2008. We conducted geochemical surveillance that included measurements of temperature, SO2 emission rates, and volcanic gas composition from 2003 to 2008 at the Nakamachineshiri (NM), Northwest (NW), and Akanuma (AK) fumarolic areas, and the 96–1 vent, where historical eruptions had occurred. The elemental compositions of the gases discharged from the different areas are similar compared with the large variations observed in volcanic gases discharged from subduction zones. All the gases showed high apparent equilibrium temperatures, suggesting that all these gases originated from a common magmatic gas. The gases discharged from each area also exhibited different characteristics, which are probably the results of differences in the conditions of meteoric water mixing, quenching of chemical reactions, and vapor-liquid separation. The highest apparent equilibrium temperatures (about 500°C) were observed in the case of NW fumarolic gases, despite the low outlet temperature of about 100°C at these fumaroles. Since the NW fumaroles were formed as a result of the 2006 phreatic eruption, the high-temperature gas supply to the NW fumarole suggests that the phreatic eruption was caused by the ascent of high-temperature magmatic gases. The temperatures, compositions, and emission rates of the NM and 96–1 gases did not show any appreciable change after the 2006 eruption, indicating that each fumarolic system had a separate magmatic-hydrothermal system. The temperatures, compositions, and emission rates of the NM fumarolic gases were apparently constant, and these fumaroles are inferred to be formed by the evaporation of a hydrothermal system with a constant temperature of about 300°C. The 96–1 gas compositions showed large changes during continuous temperature decrease from 390° to 190°C occurred from 2003 to 2008, but the sulfur gas emission rates were almost constant at about four tons/day. At the 96–1 vent, the SO2/H2S ratio decreased, while the H2/H2O ratio remained almost constant; this was probably caused by the rock-buffer controlled chemical reaction during the temperature decrease.  相似文献

The ultramafic Eocene Missouri River Breaks volcanic field (MRBVF, Montana, USA) includes over 50 diatremes emplaced in a mostly soft substrate. The current erosion level is 1.3–1.5 km below the pre-eruptive surface, exposing the deep part of the diatreme structures and some dikes. Five representative diatremes are described here; they are 200-375 m across and have sub-vertical walls. Their infill consists mostly of 55-90 % bedded pyroclastic rocks (fine tuffs to coarse lapilli tuffs) with concave-upward bedding, and 45–10 % non-bedded pyroclastic rocks (medium lapilli tuffs to tuff breccias). The latter zones form steep columns 15–135 m in horizontal dimension, which cross-cut the bedded pyroclastic rocks. Megablocks of the host sedimentary formations are also present in the diatremes, some being found 1 km or more below their sources. The diatreme infill contains abundant lithic clasts and ash-sized particles, indicating efficient fragmentation of magma and country rocks. The spherical to sub-spherical juvenile clasts are non-vesicular. They are accompanied by minor accretionary lapilli and armored lapilli. The deposits of dilute pyroclastic density currents are locally observed. Our main interpretations are as follows: (1) the observations strongly support phreatomagmatic explosions as the energy source for fragmentation and diatreme excavation; (2) the bedded pyroclastic rocks were deposited on the crater floor, and subsided by 1.0–1.3 km to their current location, with subsidence taking place mostly during the eruption; (3) the observed non-bedded pyroclastic columns were created by debris jets that punched through the bedded pyroclastic material; the debris jets did not empty the mature diatreme, occupying only a fraction of its width, and some debris jets probably did not reach the crater floor; (4) the mature diatreme was nearly always filled and buttressed by pyroclastic debris at depth – there was never a 1.3–1.5-km-deep empty hole with sub-vertical walls, otherwise the soft substrate would have collapsed inward, which it only did near the surface, to create the megablocks. We infer that syn-eruptive subsidence shifted down bedded pyroclastic material and shallow sedimentary megablocks by 0.8–1.1 km or more, after which limited post-eruptive subsidence occurred. This makes the MRBVF diatremes an extreme end-member case of syn-eruptive subsidence in the spectrum of possibilities for maar-diatreme volcanoes worldwide.  相似文献

This contribution comprises geological and magnetic results obtained in loess and paleosols profiles outcropped in the Pampean plain (Argentina). The sedimentary sequence exposed in Córdoba province is represented by four profiles Corralito I, Corralito II, Monte Ral815o and Lozada, 32°S 64°14'W (Argentina). These profiles were mineralogically described and magnetically analyzed. The sediments that compound the profiles contain volcanic glass between 20 and 90%. The results of two paleosols with different percentage of volcanic glass in the parent material (correlated to Marine Isotope Stage 5, MIS 5) exposed at Corralito I and Lozada, were compared; an important relationship between environmental magnetism signal and volcanic glass content was observed. All the results suggest that there are variations between different paleosols of the same area and age; such variations are attributed to content of volcanic glass in parent material; time of exposure of the parent material to pedogenic processes; and geomorphological place of each profile. At present, it is not possible to quantify certainly the paleo-precipitation index. Only qualitative interpretation can be done taking into account many variables of the geological system.  相似文献

The Katla central volcano, covered by the fourth largest Icelandic glacier Mýrdalsjökull, is among the most dangerous and active volcanoes in Iceland. Due to the ice cover, several indicators of its volcanic activity can only be identified indirectly. We analysed a total of 30 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images with special focus on identifying circular and linear depressions in the glacier surface. Such features are indicative of sub-glacial geothermal heat sources and the adjacent sub-glacial tunnel (melt water drainage) system. The time series comprises images from five different SAR sensors (ERS-1, ERS-2, JERS-1/SAR, RADARSAT and ENVISAT-ASAR) covering a time period of 12 years, starting in 1994. Individual SAR scenes only partly map the glacier surface morphology due to the environmental influences on the SAR backscatter intensity. Thus, only surface features detectable in several SAR scenes at the same location were considered and merged to form an overall picture of the surface morphology of Mýrdalsjökull and its modification by sub-glacial volcanic activity between 1994 and 2006. Twenty permanent and 4 semi-permanent ice cauldrons could be identified on the surface of Mýrdalsjökull indicating geothermally active areas in the underlying caldera. An analysis of their size was not possible due to the indistinct outline in the SAR images. The spatial distribution of the geothermally active areas led to a new, piecemeal caldera model of Katla volcano. All cauldrons are connected to tunnel systems for melt water drainage. More than 100 km of the sub-glacial drainage system could be identified under the Mýrdalsjökull in the SAR time series. It has been found that the tunnel systems are not in agreement with estimated water divides. Our results allow improved assessment of areas of potential Jökulhlaup hazard accompanying a sub-glacial eruption.  相似文献

Ar-Ar dating results of late Mesozoic-Cenozoic volcanic rocks from the Yanji area, NE China provide a new volcano-sedimentary stratigraphic framework. The previously defined “Triassic-Jurassic” volcanic rocks (including those from Sanxianling, Tuntianying, Tianqiaoling and Jingouling Fms.) were erupted during 118―106 Ma, corresponding to Early Cretaceous. The new eruption age span is slightly younger than the main stage (130―120 Ma) of the extensive magmatism in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt and its adjacent regions. Subduction-related adakites occurring in the previously defined Quanshuicun Fm. were extruded at ca. 55 Ma. Based on these new Ar-Ar ages, the late Mesozoic to Palaeocene volcano-sedimentary sequences is rebuilt as: Tuopangou Fm., Sanxianling/Tuntianying Fm. (118―115 Ma), Malugou/Tianqiaoling Fm. (K1), Huoshanyan/Jingouling Fm. (108―106 Ma), Changcai Fm. (K2), Quanshuicun Fm. (~55 Ma) and Dalazi Fm. Our results suggest that subduction of the Pa- laeo-Pacific Ocean beneath the East Asian continental margin occurred during 106 to 55 Ma, consistent with the paleomagnetic observations and magmatic records which indicated that the Izanagi-Farallon ridge subduction beneath the southwestern Japan took place during 95―65 Ma.  相似文献

Volcanic ash, generated in the long-lived eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat, is shown to contain respirable (sub-4 μm) particles and cristobalite, a crystalline silica polymorph. Respirable particles of cristobalite can cause silicosis, raising the possibility that volcanic ash is a respiratory health hazard. This study considers some of the main factors which affect human exposure to respirable volcanic ash, namely, the composition and proportions of respirable ash, and the composition and concentrations of airborne suspended particulates. The composition, size distribution and proportion (by weight) of respirable particles in representative samples of the Soufrière Hills tephra (dome-collapse ash-fall deposits, dome-collapse pyroclastic-flow matrix, Vulcanian explosion ash and mixed ash) have been characterized. Dome-collapse ash-fall deposits are significantly richer in respirable particles (12 wt%) than the other tephra samples, in particular the matrices of dome-collapse pyroclastic-flow deposits (3 wt%). Within the respirable fraction, dome-collapse ash contains the highest proportion of crystalline silica particles (20–27 number%, of which 97 wt% is cristobalite), compared with other primary tephra types (0.4–5.6 number%). This enrichment of crystalline silica in the dome-collapse ash is most pronounced in the very fine particle fraction (sub-2 μm). The results are explained as being due to significant size fractionation during fragmentation of pyroclastic flows, resulting in a fines-depleted dome-collapse matrix and a fines-rich dome-collapse ash deposit. For all sample types, the sub-4 μm fraction comprises 45–55 wt% of the sub-10 μm fraction. Aeolian deposit, lahar deposit and airborne samples of suspended ash, collected on filters, were characterized. These samples show enrichment of crystalline silica in the respirable fraction (10–18 number%). The results are consistent with ash in the environment having a mixed origin but originating predominantly from dome-collapse eruptions. The reworked ash, however, contains low proportions of respirable ash (~3 wt%) compared to primary ash samples. The concentration of ash particles re-suspended by road vehicles on Montserrat is found to decrease exponentially with height above the ground, indicating higher exposure for children compared with adults: PM4 concentration at 0.9 m (height of two-year-old child) is 3 times that at 1.8 m (adult height). The composition of the re-suspended road particles is similar to that re-suspended by the wind.  相似文献

A drastic change in lake water color from blue-green to brown was observed in the summit crater lake of Mt. Shinmoe-dake, Kirishima Volcano about 8 months after its 2008 eruption. The color change lasted for about 2 months (April–June 2009). The discoloration was attributed to a brownish color suspension that had formed in the lake water. X-ray fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared analyses of a sample of the suspension identified schwertmannite (Fe8O8(OH)6(SO4)). A cultivation test of iron-oxidizing bacteria for the sampled lake water with lakebed sediment revealed that the crater lake hosts iron-oxidizing bacteria, which likely participated in schwertmannite formation. We suggest that pyrite (FeS2) provided an energy source for the iron-oxidizing bacteria since the mineral was identified in hydrothermally altered tephra ejected by the August 2008 eruption. From consideration of these and other factors, the brownish discoloration of the summit crater lake of Mt. Shinmoe-dake was inferred to have resulted from a combined volcanic–microbial process.  相似文献

Samples were systematically collected from metamorphic basic volcanic rocks in the Jiehekou and Xiyupi areas on both sides of the Lüliang Mountains, Shanxi Province and analyzed for their major elements, trace elements and rare earth elements (REE). The geochemical characteristics of their major, trace and rare-earth elements indicated that the metamorphic basic volcanic rocks in this area were emplaced in the tectonic environment like a modern continental rift. Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotope chronological studies demonstrated that the Jiehekou Group metamorphic basic volcanic rocks were formed during the 2600-Ma crust/mantle differentiation event, and were transformed by granulite facies metamorphism during the late Neo-Archaean period (2500 Ma ±), making the Sm-Nd systematics of the rocks reset. During the late Paleoproterozoic period (1800 Ma ±) the Rb-Sr systematics of the rocks were disturbed again in response to the Lüliang movement. Since the extent of disturbance was so weak that the Sm-Nd systematics was not affected, the age of 1600 Ma ± obtained from this area seems to be related to local magmatic activities within the craton. Research results lend no support to the idea that the Lüliang Group was formed during the Archaean. Instead, it should be formed during the Proterozoic.  相似文献

A seismic survey by 10 shallow profiles and 6 ultra-shallow profiles was performed in Changbaishan Tianchi volcanic region in 2002. The result shows that there are three (in some areas as many as seven) stable interfaces in the survey region, but no reflection phases are found in depths greater than 500 m. The number of interfaces in the southwestern part is obviously greater than in the northwestern part of Tianchi volcano, which suggests that the faults in the southwest have a stronger controlling power over the flow direction of volcano-spewed lava as compared with those in the northwest. Six shallow faults exist in the survey region. The shallow faults are nearly vertical graben-like faults and are mostly distributed on the southwest of Tianchi crater, indicating that volcanic activities in the southwest are stronger than in the northwest. On this ground, it could be further deduced that the NE-trending major fault of Tianchi volcano ( the Liudaogou-Tianchi-Zengfengshan fault) is more active than the NW-trending Baishanzhen-Tianchi-Jince fault.  相似文献

From detailed fieldwork and biotite 40Ar/39Ar dating correlated with paleomagnetic analyses of lithic clasts, we present a revision of the stratigraphy, areal extent and volume estimates of ignimbrites in the Cerro Galán volcanic complex. We find evidence for nine distinct outflow ignimbrites, including two newly identified ignimbrites in the Toconquis Group (the Pitas and Vega Ignimbrites). Toconquis Group Ignimbrites (~5.60–4.51 Ma biotite ages) have been discovered to the southwest and north of the caldera, increasing their spatial extents from previous estimates. Previously thought to be contemporaneous, we distinguish the Real Grande Ignimbrite (4.68 ± 0.07 Ma biotite age) from the Cueva Negra Ignimbrite (3.77 ± 0.08 Ma biotite age). The form and collapse processes of the Cerro Galán caldera are also reassessed. Based on re-interpretation of the margins of the caldera, we find evidence for a fault-bounded trapdoor collapse hinged along a regional N-S fault on the eastern side of the caldera and accommodated on a N-S fault on the western caldera margin. The collapsed area defines a roughly isosceles trapezoid shape elongated E-W and with maximum dimensions 27 × 16 km. The Cerro Galán Ignimbrite (CGI; 2.08 ± 0.02 Ma sanidine age) outflow sheet extends to 40 km in all directions from the inferred structural margins, with a maximum runout distance of ~80 km to the north of the caldera. New deposit volume estimates confirm an increase in eruptive volume through time, wherein the Toconquis Group Ignimbrites increase in volume from the ~10 km3 Lower Merihuaca Ignimbrite to a maximum of ~390 km3 (Dense Rock Equivalent; DRE) with the Real Grande Ignimbrite. The climactic CGI has a revised volume of ~630 km3 (DRE), approximately two thirds of the commonly quoted value.  相似文献

This research investigates residents’ knowledge and perception of the Katla volcano and emergency response procedures in all rural and urban communities located in the eastern and southern Katla hazard zones. Using a questionnaire survey conducted in 2008, we demonstrate that there is an apparent difference between rural and urban communities' knowledge and perceptions, and identify some of the issues influencing residents’ perspectives and behaviour. All rural and most urban residents have an accurate knowledge of Katla, the proposed warning system and emergency response plan. Urban residents perceived the emergency response plan to be appropriate. In comparison, rural residents did not perceive the emergency response plan as appropriate. Rural residents stated that they would personally assess the situation before deciding on a course of action independent of the proposed plan. Livelihood connections and inherited knowledge affect rural residents’ ability and willingness to comply with the recommended procedures. Factors such as hazard knowledge, sense of community and attachment to place indicate that rural residents are more resilient to volcanic hazards. Based on our findings we recommend that emergency management agencies consider issues such as personal responsibility, neighbourliness and community involvement and cooperation, to develop and implement more appropriate volcanic risk mitigation strategies. In light of the recent Eyjafjallajökull eruptions, we provide a brief discussion on the 2010 emergency response. Although our findings are Iceland-specific, our recommendations may be applied internationally to other volcanic and disaster-prone regions.  相似文献

Recent studies on Teide–Pico Viejo (TPV) complex have revealed that explosive activity of phonolitic and basaltic magmas, including plinian and subplinian eruptions, and the generation of a wide range of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) have also been significant. We perform a statistical analysis of the time series of past eruptions and the spatial extent of their erupted products, including lava flows, fallout and PDCs. We use an extreme value theory statistical method to calculate eruption recurrence. The analysis of past activity and extent of some well-identified deposits is used to calculate the eruption recurrence probabilities of various sizes and for different time periods. With this information, we compute several significant scenarios using the GIS-based VORIS 2 software (Felpeto et al., J Volcanol Geotherm Res 166:106–116, 2007) in order to evaluate the potential extent of the main eruption hazards that could be expected from TPV. The simulated hazard scenarios show that the southern flank of Tenerife is protected by Las Cañadas caldera wall against lava flows and pyroclastic density currents, but not against ash fallout. The Icod Valley, and to a minor extent also the La Orotava valley, is directly exposed to most of TPV hazards, in particular to the gravity driven flows. This study represents a step forward in the evaluation of volcanic hazard at TPV with regard to previous studies, and the results obtained should be useful for intermediate and long-term land-use and emergency planning.  相似文献
