Central gravitational image detection is very important for the study of the mass distribution of the inner parts (∼100 pc) of lens galaxies. However, the detection of such images is extremely rare and difficult. We present a 1.7-GHz High Sensitivity Array (HSA) observation of the double-image radio lens system B1030+074. The data are combined with archive Very Long Baseline Array and global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations, and careful consideration is given to the effects of noise, clean ing and self-calibration. An upper limit is derived for the strength of the central image of 180 μJy (90 per cent confidence level), considerably greater than would have been expected on the basis of a simple analysis. This gives a lower limit of ∼103 for the ratio of the brightest image to the central image. For cusped models of lens mass distributions, we have made use of this non-detection to constrain the relation between inner power-law slope β of the lensing galaxy mass profile, and its break radius r b. For   r b > 130 pc  the power-law slope is required to be close to isothermal  (β > 1.8)  . A flatter inner slope is allowed if a massive black hole is present at the centre of the lensing galaxy, but the effect of the black hole is small unless it is ∼10 times more massive than that implied by the relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion. By comparing four epochs of VLBI observations, we also detected possible superluminal motion in the jet in the brighter image A. The B jet remains unresolved, as expected from a simple lens model of the system.  相似文献

We report the discovery of a new double-image gravitational lens system, B1030 + 074, which was found during the Jodrell Bank–VLA Astrometric Survey (JVAS). We have collected extensive radio data on the system using the VLA, MERLIN, the EVN and the VLBA, and optical observations using WFPC2 on the HST . The lensed images are separated by 1.56 arcsec and their flux density ratio at centimetric wavelengths is approximately 14:1, although the ratio is slightly frequency-dependent and the images appear to be time-variable. The HST pictures show both the lensed images and the lensing galaxy close to the weaker image. The lensing galaxy has substructure which could be a spiral arm or an interacting galaxy. We have modelled B1030 + 074 using a singular isothermal ellipsoid which yields a time delay of 156/ h 50 d. This lens is likely to be suitable for the measurement of the Hubble constant.  相似文献

Gravitational lenses offer the possibility of accurately determining the Hubble parameter ( H 0) over cosmological distances, and B0218+357 is one of the most promising systems for an application of this technique. In particular this system has an accurately measured time delay (10.5±0.4 d) and preliminary mass modelling has given a value for H 0 of 69−19+13 km s−1 Mpc−1. The error on this estimate is now dominated by the uncertainty in the mass modelling. As this system contains an Einstein ring it should be possible to constrain the model better by imaging the ring at high resolution. To achieve this we have combined data from MERLIN and the Very Large Array (VLA) at a frequency of 5 GHz. In particular MERLIN has been used in multifrequency mode in order to improve substantially the aperture coverage of the combined data set. The resulting map is the best that has been made of the ring and contains many new and interesting features. Efforts are currently underway to exploit the new data for lensing constraints using the LensClean algorithm.  相似文献

The complex 10-component gravitational lens system B1933+503 has been monitored with the Very Large Array (VLA) during the period 1998 February–June with a view to measuring the time delay between the four compact components and hence to determine the Hubble parameter H 0. Here we present the results of an 'A' configuration 8.4-GHz monitoring campaign that consists of 37 epochs with an average spacing of 2.8 d. The data have yielded light curves for the four flat-spectrum radio components (components 1, 3, 4 and 6). We observe only small flux density changes in the four flat-spectrum components that we do not believe are predominantly intrinsic to the source. Therefore the variations do not allow us to determine the independent time delays in this system. However, the data do allow us to accurately determine the flux density ratios between the four flat-spectrum components. These will prove important as modelling constraints and could prove crucial in future monitoring observations should these data show only a monotonic increase or decrease in the flux densities of the flat-spectrum components.  相似文献

The key to using a strong gravitational lens system to measure the Hubble constant is to obtain an accurate model of the lens potential. In this paper, we investigate the properties of gravitational lens B1608+656, a quadruply imaged lens system with an extended source intensity distribution. Our analysis is valid for generic quadruply lensed systems. Limit curves and isophotal separatrices are defined for such systems, and we show that the isophotal separatrices must intersect at the critical curves and the satellite isophotes must be tangent to the limit curves. The most recent model of B1608+656 by Koopmans et al. satisfies these criteria for some, but not all, of the isophotal separatrices within the observational uncertainty. We study a non-parametric method of potential reconstruction proposed by Blandford, Surpi & Kundic and demonstrate that although the method works in principle and elucidates image formation, the initial potential only converges to the true model when it is within ∼1 per cent of the true model.  相似文献

We have searched for molecular absorption lines at millimetre wavelengths in 11 gravitational lens systems discovered in the JVAS/CLASS surveys of flat spectrum radio sources. Spectra of only one source 1030+074 were obtained in the 3-, 2- and 1.3-mm bands at the frequencies corresponding to common molecular transitions of CO and HCO+ as continuum emission was not found in any of the other sources. We calculated upper limits to the column density in molecular absorption for 1030+074, using an excitation temperature of 15 K, to be N CO<6.3×1013 cm−2 and N HCO+<1.3×1011 cm−2 , equivalent to hydrogen column density of the order N H<1018 cm−2 , assuming standard molecular abundances. We also present the best upper limits of the continuum at the lower frequency for the other 10 gravitational lenses.  相似文献

We report the discovery, using NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope , of an arcsec-diameter Einstein ring in the gravitational lens system B1938+666. The lensing galaxy is also detected, and is most likely an early-type galaxy. Modelling of the ring is presented and compared with the radio structure from MERLIN maps. We show that the Einstein ring is consistent with the gravitational lensing of an extended infrared component, centred between the two radio components.  相似文献

We report the discovery of the most complex arcsec-scale radio gravitational lens system yet known. B1933+503 was found during the course of the CLASS survey and MERLIN and VLA radio maps reveal up to 10 components. Four of these are compact and have flat spectra; the rest are more extended and have steep spectra. The background lensed object appears to consist of a flat-spectrum core (quadruply imaged) and two compact 'lobes' symmetrically disposed relative to the core. One of the lobes is quadruply imaged while the other is doubly imaged. An HST observation of the system with the WFPC2 shows a galaxy with an axial ratio of 0.5, but none of the images of the background object is detected. A redshift of 0.755 has been measured for the lens galaxy.  相似文献

High-resolution MERLIN observations of a newly discovered four-image gravitational lens system, B0128+437, are presented. The system was found after a careful re-analysis of the entire CLASS data set. The MERLIN observations resolve four components in a characteristic quadruple-image configuration; the maximum image separation is 542 mas and the total flux density is 48 mJy at 5 GHz. A best-fitting lens model with a singular isothermal ellipsoid results in large errors in the image positions. A significantly improved fit is obtained after the addition of a shear component, suggesting that the lensing system is more complex and may consist of multiple deflectors. The integrated radio spectrum of the background source indicates that it is a gigahertz peaked spectrum source. It may therefore be possible to resolve structure within the radio images with deep VLBI observations and thus to constrain the lensing mass distribution better.  相似文献

We present observations of CLASS B2108+213, the widest separation gravitational lens system discovered by the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey. Radio imaging using the VLA at 8.46 GHz and MERLIN at 5 GHz shows two compact components separated by 4.56 arcsec with a faint third component in between which we believe is emission from a lensing galaxy. 5-GHz VLBA observations reveal milliarcsecond-scale structure in the two lensed images that is consistent with gravitational lensing. Optical emission from the two lensed images and two lensing galaxies within the Einstein radius is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Furthermore, an optical gravitational arc, associated with the strongest lensed component, has been detected. Surrounding the system is a number of faint galaxies which may help explain the wide image separation. A plausible mass distribution model for CLASS B2108+213 is also presented.  相似文献

We present a series of high-resolution radio and optical observations of the CLASS gravitational lens system B1152+199 obtained with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network, Very Long Baseline Array and Hubble Space Telescope . Based on the milliarcsecond-scale substructure of the lensed radio components and precise optical astrometry for the lensing galaxy, we construct models for the system and place constraints on the galaxy mass profile. For a single galaxy model with surface mass density  Σ(r)∝r− β   , we find that  0.95 β 1.21  at 2 σ confidence. Including a second deflector to represent a possible satellite galaxy of the primary lens leads to slightly steeper mass profiles.  相似文献

The Jodrell Bank–VLA Astrometric Survey (JVAS) and the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) have been systematically searched for multiple gravitational imaging of sources with image separations between 6 arcsec and 15 arcsec, associated with galaxy group and cluster lensing masses. The radio and optical follow-up observations of all candidates are presented. From a total of ∼15 000 sources only one weak candidate remains and this is not contained in the statistically complete sample of flat-spectrum JVAS/CLASS sources of 11 670 sources. A simple Press–Schechter analysis is performed. For singular isothermal sphere lenses the lack of multiple image systems is inconsistent with the currently favoured cosmologies with     at the 4.2 σ level. Cored isothermal lenses reduce the expected number of lens systems and we suggest that the most probable interpretation of our results is that the surface mass density of groups and clusters of galaxies is not high enough to cause multiple imaging and the presence of the mass concentrations associated with individual galaxies is required to produce image separations such as those in B0957+561.  相似文献
