We discuss the correlations between the luminosities of radio pulsars in various frequency ranges and the magnetic fields on the light cylinder. These correlations suggest that the observed emission is generated in outer layers of the pulsar magnetospheres by the synchrotron mechanism. To calculate the distribution functions of the relativistic particles in the generation region, we use a model of quasilinear interactions between the waves excited by cyclotron instability and particles of the primary beam and the secondary electron—positron plasma. We derive a formula for calculating the X-ray luminosity L x of radio pulsars. A strong correlation was found between L x and the parameter \(\dot P_{ - 15} /P^{3.5}\), where P is the neutron-star rotation period, in close agreement with this formula. The latter makes it possible to predict the detection of X-ray emission from more than a hundred (114) known radio pulsars. We show that the Lorentz factors of the secondary particles are small (γ p = 1.5–8.5), implying that the magnetic field near the neutron-star surface in these objects is multipolar. It follows from our model that almost all of the millisecond pulsars must emit X-ray synchrotron radiation. This conclusion differs from predictions of other models and can be used to test the theory under consideration. The list of potential X-ray radiators presented here can be used to search for X-ray sources with existing instruments.  相似文献

I review the evidence for stellar mass black holes in the Galaxy. The unique properties of the soft X-ray transient (SXTs) have provided the first opportunity for detailed studies of the mass-losing star in low-mass X-ray binaries. The large mass functions of these systems imply that the compact object has a mass greater than the maximum mass of a neutron star, strengthening the case that they contain black holes. The results and techniques used are discussed. I also review the recent study of a comparison of the luminosities of black hole and neutron star systems which has yielded compelling evidence for the existence of event horizons.  相似文献

We further investigate the two-dimensional hydrodynamic explosion model for rapidly rotating and collapsing supernovae (Aksenov et al. 1997), in which the initial energy release inside a fragmenting low-mass neutron star of critical mass ≈0.1M moving in a circular orbit at a velocity of ≈18000 km s?1 is reduced considerably. This velocity closely corresponds to a pulsar escape velocity of ≈1000 km s?1 (at a total mass of ≈1.9M for the binary of neutron stars). Compared to our previous study (Zabrodina and Imshennik 1999), this energy release was reduced by more than a half. Otherwise, the model in question does not differ from the explosion model with a self-consistent chemical composition of nuclides investigated in the above paper. In particular, the initial energy release was carefully reconciled with a chemical composition. Our numerical solution shows that the reduction in energy release due to the time scales of β processes and neutrino energy losses being finite does not alter the qualitative results of our previous studies (Aksenov et al. 1997; Imshennik and Zabrodina 1999). An intense undamped diverging shock wave (with a total post-shock energy ? 1051 erg at a front radius of ≈10 000 km) is formed; a large asymmetry of explosion with a narrow cone (with a solid angle of ≈π/4) around the leading direction, which coincides with the velocity direction of the low-mass neutron star at the instant of its explosive fragmentation in the two-dimensional model, emerges. A jet of synthesized radioactive nickel, whose mass is estimated by using simple threshold criteria to be M Ni≈(0.02?0.03)M is concentrated inside this cone. This appears to be the integrated parameter that is most sensitive to the specified reduction in initial energy release; it is also reduced by almost a half compared to our previous estimate (Imshennik and Zabrodina 1999). The time of propagation of the shock wave inferred in our model to the presupernova surface was estimated for SN 1987A to be 0.5–1.0 h, in agreement with observations.  相似文献

We analyze the statistical distribution of weakly radiating pulsars, i.e., radio pulsars that have passed to the stage of an orthogonal rotator during the evolution of the inclination angle X. We discuss in detail the factors that lead to a significant reduction in the energy losses for this class of objects. We have determined the number of weakly radiating radio pulsars and their distribution in spin period P. The predictions of a theory based on the model of current losses are shown to be consistent with observational data.  相似文献

Two independent sets of arguments lead us to conclude that the progenitors of superintense bursts (with an energy yield larger than that for ordinary supernovae by one or two orders of magnitude) are born in massive dense star clusters, but generally flare up only after they have left the cluster; these are the same objects that are the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Each of the giant stellar arcs which are grouped into multiple systems of stellar complexes in the LMC and NGC 6946 could only be produced by a single powerful energy release near its center. The progenitors of these systems of arc-shaped stellar complexes must have had a common source nearby, and it could only be a massive star cluster. Such clusters are actually known near both systems. On the other hand, calculations of the dynamical evolution of star clusters show that close binary systems of compact objects are formed in the dense central parts of the clusters and are then ejected from them during triple encounters. Mergers of the components of such systems are believed to be responsible for GRBs. Since their progenitors are ejected from the cluster before merging, the arc-shaped stellar complexes produced by GRBs are observed near (but not around) the parent clusters. If a considerable fraction of the GRB progenitors are formed as a result star encounters in massive star clusters, and if the GRBs themselves trigger star formation near the parent clusters, then observations of GRBs in star-forming regions are consistent with their origin during mergers of pairs of compact objects.  相似文献

We obtained a series of more than two hundred R-band CCD images for the crowded central (115″×77″) region of the metal-poor globular cluster M 15 with an angular resolution of \(0\mathop .\limits^{''} 5 - 0\mathop .\limits^{''} 9\) in most images. Optimal image subtraction was used to identify variable stars. Brightness variations were found in 83 stars, 55 of which were identified with known cluster variables and the remaining 28 are candidates for new variables. Two of them are most likely SX Phe variables. The variability type of two more stars is uncertain. The remaining stars were tentatively classified as RR Lyrae variables. A preliminary analysis of published data and our results shows that the characteristics of RR Lyrae variables in the densest part (r<35″) of the cluster probably change. More specifically, the maximum of the period distribution of first-and second-overtone (RR1, RR2) pulsating stars shifts toward shorter periods; i.e., there is an increase in the fraction of stars pulsating with periods \( < 0\mathop .\limits^d 3\) and a deficiency of stars with \(0\mathop .\limits^d 35 - 0\mathop .\limits^d 40\). The ratio of the number of these short-period RR Lyrae variables to the number of fundamental-tone (RR0) pulsating variables changes appreciably. We found and corrected the error of transforming the coordinates of variables V128–155 in M 15 into the coordinate system used in the catalog of variable stars in globular clusters.  相似文献

By directly comparing the photometric distances of Blaha and Humphreys (1989) (BH) to OB associations and field stars with the corresponding Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes, we show that the BH distance scale is overestimated, on average, by 10–20%. This result is independently corroborated by applying the rigorous statistical-parallax method and its simplified analog (finding a kinematically adjusted rotation-curve solution from radial velocities and proper motions) to a sample of OB associations. These two methods lead us to conclude that the BH distance scale for OB associations should be shrunk, on average, by 11±6 and 24±10%, respectively. Kinematical parameters have been determined for the system of OB associations: u 0 = 8.2 ± 1.3 km s?1, v 0 = 11.9 ± 1.1 km s?1, w 0 = 9.5 ± 0.9 km s?1, σ u = 8.2 ± 1.1 km s?1, σ v = 5.8 ± 0.8 km s?1, σ w = 5.0 ± 0.8 km s?1, Ω0 = 29.1 ± 1.0 km s?1 kpc?1, Ω0′ = ?4.57 ± 0.20 km s?1 kpc?2, and Ω0″ = 1.32 ± 0.14 km s?1 kpc?3. The distance scale for OB associations reduced by 20% matches the short Cepheid distance scale (Berdnikov and Efremov 1985; Sitnik and Mel’nik 1996). Our results are a further argument for the short distance scale in the Universe.  相似文献

Small perturbations of spherical star clusters around massive black holes are studied. The presence of a black hole gives rise to peculiar distributions that have no stars with low angular momenta (falling into the so-called “loss cone”). The stability of such a distribution has been found to depend significantly on whether it monotonically increases with angular momentum L (from the loss cone up to L = L circ in circular orbits) or has a maximum at some intermediate L = L *. In the case of spherical systems under consideration, the loss-cone instability is shown to be possible only for nonmonotonic distributions.  相似文献

Updated proper motions for 328 probable members of the Praesepe are used to determine the distance to this open cluster by Hertzsprung's geometric method. The cluster distance was found to be r=171±15 pc, which corresponds to the distance modulus $V_0 - M_V = 6\mathop .\limits^m 16 \pm 0.19$ . We consider disk and spherical subsystems of stars with nearly radial orbits under conditions when the well-known radial orbit instability is not possible. This requires that the precession of stellar orbits be retrograde, i.e., in the direction opposite to the orbital rotation of stars. We show that an instability that is an analogue of the loss-cone instability known in plasma physics can then develop in the presence of a “loss cone” in the angular momentum distribution of stars, which ensures a deficit or even absence of stars with low angular momenta. Examples of systems with a loss cone are the centers of galaxies or star clusters with massive black holes. The instability can produce a flux of stars onto the galactic center, i.e., it can serve as a mechanism of fueling the nuclear activity of galaxies. Mathematically, the problem is reduced to analyzing simple characteristic equations that describe small perturbations in a disk and a sphere of radially highly elongated stellar orbits. In turn, these characteristics equations are derived through a number of successive simplifications of the general linearized Vlasov equations (i.e., the system that includes the collisionless Boltzmann kinetic equation and the Poisson equation) in action—angle variables.  相似文献

We study the various approximations used to investigate the eigenmode spectrum for systems with highly elongated stellar orbits. The approximation in which the elongated orbits are represented by thin rotating spokes, with the rotation imitating the precession of real orbits, is the simplest and most natural one. However, we show that using this pictorial approximation does not allow the picture of stability to be properly presented. We show that for stellar systems with a plane disk geometry, this approach does not allow unstable spectral modes to be obtained even in the leading order in small parameter, which characterizes the spread of nearly radial orbits in angular momentum. For spherical systems, where the situation is more favorable, the spectrum can be determined but only in the leading order in this parameter. A rigorous approach based on the solution of more complex integral equations given here should be used to properly investigate the stability of stellar systems.  相似文献

We detected giant pulses from the pulsar PSR B1112+50. A pulse with an intensity that is a factor of 30 or more higher than the intensity of the average pulse is encountered approximately once in 150 observed pulses. The peak flux density of the strongest pulse is about 180 Jy. This value is a factor of 80 higher than the peak flux density of the average pulse. The giant pulses are narrower than the average profile by approximately a factor of 5 and they cluster about the center of the average profile.  相似文献

An analytic solution has been found in the Roche approximation for the axially symmetric structure of a hydrostatically equilibrium atmosphere of a neutron star produced by collapse. A hydrodynamic (quasione-dimensional) model for the collapse of a rotating iron core in a massive star gives rise to a heterogeneous rotating protoneutron star with an extended atmosphere composed of matter from the outer part of the iron core with differential rotation (Imshennik and Nadyozhin, 1992). The equation of state of a completely degenerate iron gas with an arbitrary degree of relativity is taken for the atmospheric matter. We construct a family of toroidal model atmospheres with total masses M≈ 0.1?2M and total angular momenta J≈(1?5.5)×49 erg s, which are acceptable for the outer part of the collapsed iron core, in accordance with the hydrodynamic model, as a function of constant parameters ω0 and r 0 of the specified differential rotation law Ω=ω0exp[?(rsinθ)2/r 0 2 ] in spherical coordinates. The assumed rotation law is also qualitatively consistent with the hydrodynamic model for the collapse of an iron core.  相似文献
