The study of continental effluents discharged into the marine environment has enabled us to show that phosphate ion concentration does not follow the linear law of dilution exhibited by a true solution. We were able to show that the dilution of sewage in seawater allows the particles and colloids to desorb phosphate ions, thus increasing the amount of already dissolved inorganic phosphate. 相似文献

Sediment and seawater samples were taken in a sewage affected channel in Blanca Bay, Argentina. Protein content, ‘humic substances’ and silt-clay percentage were evaluated in the sediments; NH4+, PO43? and ‘dissolved organic matter’ in seawater. A highly significant correlation (r=0.747, n=59) was obtained for the relation between protein and % silt-clay. The ‘humic substances’ distribution depends more on the distance from the outfall than does the protein content, probably because of the important relation of the latter with the sediment particle size. The dissolved components showed a dilution pattern similar to that of a contaminant plume in a moving water mass, reaching normal values at 1700 m from the outfall. 相似文献

During September and October 1997 a seismic sequence of moderate magnitude struck the Umbria and Marche regions, central Italy. As a consequence of the main shocks several rock falls were triggered along the flanks of the Valnerina valley, an important canyon formed by the erosion of the Nera river on limestone formations. This landslide data set was used to explore the correlation existing among rock falls and several causal factors, like slope angle, geology and strong ground motion parameters. All the data have been digitised and georeferenced with the aid of a Geographic Information System in the form of digital thematic layers. The landslide inventory has been overlaid to the maps of causal factors, and the result arranged in order to create a data structure suitable to perform a multivariate statistics. A multiple regression allowed to formulate a predictive rule that can be used to produce a rock fall susceptibility map in case of an earthquake, in regions with similar geologic and geomorphologic characteristics. 相似文献

Elemental carbon and nitrogen levels and isotope ratios were assessed in different biological compartments of a Northwest (NW) Mediterranean bay to trace the various sources of nutrient input from natural (river runoffs) and anthropogenic (harbor outflows, fish farms and urban sewage outfall) sources. Samples from transplanted mussels and natural sea grass communities (Posidonia oceanica leaves and epiphytes) were harvested from different locations throughout the bay during the touristic summer and rainy seasons. The results from the nitrogen analysis revealed that sewage and harbor outflow promote higher nitrogen levels, enrichment of 15N in the tissues, and a higher seasonal variability in sea grass and epiphytes. In mussel tissues, the δ15N was also influenced by sewage and harbor outflow, whereas δ13C was influenced by terrestrial inputs. These results suggest that natural and anthropogenic nutrient inputs have a temporary and localized influence and affect the sensitivity of natural isotopic ratios to changes in hydrologic conditions, especially to rain and tourism. 相似文献

Despite Antarctica being the largest pristine wilderness on Earth, many coastal Antarctic research stations release untreated sewage waste into the marine environment, which may have negative effects on local wildlife. In February 2003 a sewage treatment plant was installed at Rothera Research Station (Adelaide Island, Antarctic Peninsula). After one year of operation the sewage treatment plant had dramatically reduced the microbiological pollution in the near-shore marine environment around the outfall and seawater quality conformed to European Union Bathing Water Standards. 相似文献

The discharge and water level of a gaining stream are known to be maintained during dry spells by baseflow, which is defined as discharge from underground storage. However, the effect of baseflow on a real river is not well known because direct measurements of baseflow in field are difficult to conduct. Therefore, this study attempts to clarify the contribution of baseflow to streamflow and the extent to which the water level is maintained even during dry spells. A digital filter technique is applied to the records of daily mean streamflow in order to estimate the amount of baseflow, and the lateral distribution method is applied to irregular cross sections at observational sites to obtain the stage–discharge rate curve. Through a comparison of the observed data and calculation results, the amount of baseflow is estimated across the channel, in addition to the maximum water level retained during dry spells in relation to the baseflow. Finally, based on the results of an energy conservation model, this study proposes that the source of the amount of baseflow estimated across a channel section may be different from that of the water level maintained during dry spells. 相似文献

In a batch experiment with activated sludge from a large-scale plant the hydrolytical and biochemical degradation of dimethylformamide (DMF) and its reaction product dimethylamine (DMA) and the conversion connected with this under aerobic and anaerobic conditions is investigated. Parallel to the hydrolysis of DMF the biochemical degradation of DMA occurs. The extensive conversion of these substrates is followed by the nitrification of the ammoniumions formed, and under subsequent anaerobic conditions with methanol as the carbon source also denitrification can be achieved. If the oxygen supply of the activated sludge is insufficient, however, also DMA can be used as a carbon source for denitrification, ammonium-ions being released from DMA in addition. In the batch experiment the elimination rates referred to nitrogen were 7 … 14 mg/g · h for DMF, 0.8 … 1.7 mg/g · h for DMA, 0.3 … 0.6 mg/g · h for NH and 0.4 to 1.3 mg/g · h for nitrate in the presence of methanol. An investigation on the effects of deepwater outfall discharges on the status of rocky reef communities was carried out. The sanitation system was found to be an environmentally suitable option for the protection of those habitats situated in high energy coastal environments. Sediments occurring between the predominating rocky substrates showed low values of the fine fraction (<63microm) and organic matter content. In addition, high average concentrations of Cd, Hg and Zn were found in these sediments, though these values were similar to those registered in non-affected sites, far away from the outfall. On the other hand, those assemblages typical of hard substrates that settled near the outfall showed an increase in total richness and abundance of macroinvertebrates. Moreover, the average number of species of each taxonomic group, a good indicator of the maintenance of the previous trophic structure, only varied considerably over time at the rip-rap protection. In a global context, those changes were not directly related to the discharge disturbances, but to the natural variability or the successional processes occurring within those communities. Only communities dwelling in the rip-rap protection area were affected by the proximity of the discharges. 相似文献

Accurate representation of artificial recharge is requisite to calibration of a ground water model of an unconfined aquifer for a semiarid or arid site with a vadose zone that imparts significant attenuation of liquid transmission and substantial anthropogenic liquid discharges. Under such circumstances, artificial recharge occurs in response to liquid disposal to the vadose zone in areas that are small relative to the ground water model domain. Natural recharge, in contrast, is spatially variable and occurs over the entire upper boundary of a typical unconfined ground water model. An improved technique for partitioning artificial recharge from simulated total recharge for inclusion in a ground water model is presented. The improved technique is applied using data from the semiarid Hanford Site. From 1944 until the late 1980s, when Hanford's mission was the production of nuclear materials, the quantities of liquid discharged from production facilities to the ground vastly exceeded natural recharge. Nearly all hydraulic head data available for use in calibrating a ground water model at this site were collected during this period or later, when the aquifer was under the diminishing influence of the massive water disposals. The vadose zone is typically 80 to 90 m thick at the Central Plateau where most production facilities were located at this semiarid site, and its attenuation of liquid transmission to the aquifer can be significant. The new technique is shown to improve the representation of artificial recharge and thereby contribute to improvement in the calibration of a site-wide ground water model. 相似文献

The paper deals with recent measurements of NH3 applying an improved Indophenolblue method after Bertheolot. Aircraft measurements show a marked difference of the absolute concentration of NH3 between summer and winter. This seasonal difference indicates the effectiveness of biogenic NH3 sources during the summer months. Quantitative analysis of the source strength of different soils show the influence of the temperature at the ground and of the pH-value of the soil. The main sources of NH3 are continental, but microbiological activity in the soil alone cannot fully explain the NH3 flux into the atmosphere. 相似文献

Mean annual rates of tritium input into the ocean averaged over 5° latitude bands are presented for the major oceans, for the period 1952–1975. The rates are obtained by converting tritium concentrations in marine precipitation into net oceanic tritium input, by means of a hydrological model. The tropospheric tritium pattern is specified on the basis of available observations, and climatological means from the literature are used for the rates of evaporation and precipitation and for the relative humidity in ship's height, that enter the model. Tritium input by water vapor exchange exceeds that by precipitation about three-fold. Tritium input by river runoff and by net tropospheric tritium outflow from the continents is also accounted for. This contribution is small except for the northern Indian Ocean and the North Atlantic.The inputs have hemispheric maxima near 50° latitude. The northern hemisphere inputs were strongly peaked in 1963–1964, whereas temporal changes in the southern hemisphere were much more gradual. By 1972, about 75% of the total oceanic input had been received by the northern ocean. For the Pacific, the computed total input agrees with the actual tritium inventory within the limits of uncertainty (about ±20%). The global tritium inventory is estimated at 1.9 GCi in 1972, which corresponds to an average tritium yield of 0.9 kg tritium per megaton TNT equivalent of nuclear fusion. 相似文献

Non-linear tidal dynamics are investigated in a network that consists of a semi-enclosed main channel and a secondary channel at an arbitrary position. The water motion, governed by the one-dimensional shallow water equations, is forced by an incoming tidal wave. Solutions are obtained with the method of characteristics. The overall aim is to quantify and understand the spatial structure of different tidal harmonics (the principal tide and its non-linear overtides) and of tidal asymmetry for both the vertical and the horizontal tide in the main channel for different locations of the secondary channel. This is of practical interest in the context of possible construction of secondary channels to reduce tidal range in estuaries. Moreover, tidal asymmetry is an important factor in driving net sediment transport. Analysis of the different tidal harmonics shows that their characteristics are similar to those obtained with an earlier linear model. In particular, amplitudes of the harmonics are reduced landward of the secondary channel if the latter is positioned less than a quarter wavelength of the respective tidal wave away from the landward boundary. Thus, the distortions of the tide due to the presence of the secondary channel are generated locally and afterwards propagate through the network. Tidal asymmetry is quantified by examining tidal range, flood-to-ebb ratio and the duration of the falling tide and the duration between maximum flood and maximum ebb. A spatial non-uniform reduction in tidal range is observed that shows very localised increase and decrease depending on the position of the secondary channel. The changes in the velocity characteristics induce changes in net sediment transport. It turns out that the direction of the peak current, derived from the flood-to-ebb ratio, is not sensitive to the position of the secondary channel, whereas the duration between flood and ebb can change from more to less than half the tidal cycle. Point-source impacts such as sewage plumes can cause significant degradation of larval habitat. Data on larval abundance, current speed and the shape of surface and subsurface sewage plumes off the coast of Sydney, Australia, indicated that long-shore currents can transport large numbers of larvae through plumes that can potentially affect the health of larvae. Deformities to the notochord, eyes and head were found in samples of preserved wild larvae. Some deformities (e.g. Lateral curl of the notochord) were probably caused by preservation and ‘packing effects’ (shaped by organisms and objects in the sample), while others (e.g. half-pigmented eyes and corrugated notochord) were unlikely to have been caused by sampling artefacts. Deformed larvae were found in waters around Sydney that are influenced by multiple sewage outfalls, and at locations up to 250 km from Sydney. It was concluded that deformities were caused by natural and potentially anthropogenic factors. Cyto- and histopathological studies of larvae are required. Moreover, relationships between oceanography and concentrations of pollutants in plumes are needed to further assess impacts of pollutants on assemblages of vulnerable planktonic animals. 相似文献

Effects of insufficient soil aeration on the functioning of plants form an important field of research. A well-known and frequently used utility to express oxygen stress experienced by plants is the Feddes-function. This function reduces root water uptake linearly between two constant pressure heads, representing threshold values for minimum and maximum oxygen deficiency. However, the correctness of this expression has never been evaluated and constant critical values for oxygen stress are likely to be inappropriate. On theoretical grounds it is expected that oxygen stress depends on various abiotic and biotic factors. In this paper, we propose a fundamentally different approach to assess oxygen stress: we built a plant physiological and soil physical process-based model to calculate the minimum gas filled porosity of the soil (gas_min) at which oxygen stress occurs.First, we calculated the minimum oxygen concentration in the gas phase of the soil needed to sustain the roots through (micro-scale) diffusion with just enough oxygen to respire. Subsequently, gas_min that corresponds to this minimum oxygen concentration was calculated from diffusion from the atmosphere through the soil (macro-scale).We analyzed the validity of constant critical values to represent oxygen stress in terms of gas_min, based on model simulations in which we distinguished different soil types and in which we varied temperature, organic matter content, soil depth and plant characteristics. Furthermore, in order to compare our model results with the Feddes-function, we linked root oxygen stress to root water uptake (through the sink term variable F, which is the ratio of actual and potential uptake).The simulations showed that gas_min is especially sensitive to soil temperature, plant characteristics (root dry weight and maintenance respiration coefficient) and soil depth but hardly to soil organic matter content. Moreover, gas_min varied considerably between soil types and was larger in sandy soils than in clayey soils. We demonstrated that F of the Feddes-function indeed decreases approximately linearly, but that actual oxygen stress already starts at drier conditions than according to the Feddes-function. How much drier is depended on the factors indicated above. Thus, the Feddes-function might cause large errors in the prediction of transpiration reduction and growth reduction through oxygen stress.We made our method easily accessible to others by implementing it in SWAP, a user-friendly soil water model that is coupled to plant growth. Since constant values for gas_min in plant and hydrological modeling appeared to be inappropriate, an integrated approach, including both physiological and physical processes, should be used instead. An experimental investigation on the initiation and development of bed forms on a bed of fine silica sand was conducted under alluvial flow conditions in a laboratory flume with a diverging channel. The main aims of the study were to assess: i) the steepness of bed forms in the transition stage of development; and ii) the threshold height of wavelets (ηt) that triggered the start of ripple development. Detailed bed profile measurements were carried out using an acoustic Doppler probe, traversed longitudinally over the sediment bed at various experimentation times. The bed form dimensions were extracted from such bed profile records and analysed for the wavelet, transition and equilibrium stages. It was found that the steepness of ripples in the transition and equilibrium stages were similar, confirming predictions of previous mathematical model simulations. A lognormal distribution fitted the wavelet length data. The wavelet threshold height was estimated as ηt ≈ 7 mm, or ηt≈ 80 in wall units. Such a height magnitude suggested that ripple development could be triggered by the wavelets reaching the outer flow zone of a turbulent boundary layer. The ηt value obtained corresponded generally to the intersection point between two predictive equations for bed form dimensions. A formulation was developed to predict ηt as a function of the sediment grain size, which was confirmed for the fine sand used in this study. 相似文献
