Partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in surface seawater has been measured in the northeastern Pacific Ocean at Station P and along Line P since 1973. These data have been divided into ‘oceanic’ and ‘coastal/transition’ zones, and the seasonal and interannual variability and the long-term trends for each zone have been examined. The oceanic zone shows little seasonality in surface seawater pCO2, with undersaturation throughout the year. A strong, biologically-driven seasonal cycle is offset by variation in temperature-dependent solubility of CO2. The coastal/transition zone shows a decline in pCO2 from winter–spring through summer and fall that is likely the result of seasonal stratification and convection rather than coastal upwelling. Interannual variability all along Line P is correlated with the multivariate ENSO index (MEI), with lower seawater pCO2 associated with El Niño conditions. Correlations with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation Index are similar but weaker, in part because there are few data prior to the 1976 regime shift. The long-term trend in seawater pCO2 in the oceanic zone is +1.36±0.16 μatm year?1, indistinguishable from the atmospheric growth rate, and varies little among the seasons. In the coastal/transition zone a slow increase in the pCO2 of surface seawater relative to that of the atmosphere has led to increasing undersaturation, particularly in spring. Aliasing of the seasonal and interannual variability due to sampling frequency may explain part of the observed trend in the coastal/transition zone, but real changes in physical or biological processes are also possible and require more detailed study.  相似文献

A variety of photochemical and thermochemical processes may lead to the formation of Cu(I) in the upper water column. A thermodynamic model based on measured steady state levels of H2O2 in the photic zone indicates that a significant proportion of total dissolved Cu is present as Cu(I).The oxidation kinetics of Cu(I) in seawater have been studied to assess the potential for Cu(I) to accumulate at significant steady state levels when it is generated by non-equilibrium processes.  相似文献

The biogeochemistry of organic matter in a macrotidal estuary, the Loire, France, has been studied for two years during different seasons. Both particulate matter and sediment have been sampled in the riverine zone, in the maximum turbidity zone and in the ocean near the river mouth. Two techniques have been used: carbon isotopic ratio determination and analysis of lipid-marker signatures in the n-alkane, n-alkene and fatty acid series. For the period corresponding to the output of the maximum turbidity zone in the ocean, the complete change of organic matter, continental in nature in the inner estuary, pure marine in the outer estuary is well illustrated by the decrease of δ13C values and of carbon preference index of n-alkanes. Input sources of organic matter by continental plants, plankton and micro-organisms are discussed from biogeochemical-marker analyses data along with the processes of accumulation of particles and their evolution with the season. Some criteria for evidencing the nature of various organic-matter pools are assessed and compared in different chemical-marker series as follows: high molecular weight n-alkanes and fatty acids, perylene for continental imprints, polyunsaturated 18-, 20- and 22-carbon fatty acids, n-C17, n-alkenes and squalene for algae imprints, branched iso and anteiso fatty acids, Δ11-C18:1 for microbial imprints.  相似文献

The weathering of a very light crude oil (a condensate) in a sandy beach in Nova Scotia has been studied by following changes in its detailed chemical composition.Evaporation was the dominant weathering process in supratidal sand. After 4 months all oil components more volatile than n-C16 had disappeared; concentrations of compounds less volatile than n-C18 did not change. In the surface sand of the upper intertidal zone evaporation was much slower, with C8 hydrocarbons still present after 3 months. Dissolution was also important in this environment with aromatic components up to the C1-naphthalenes being removed in the first month. In subsurface (5–10 cm) sand from this zone and in both surface and subsurface samples from the middle intertidal zone, no loss of volatiles occurred over a 6-month period. Preferential Dissolution was significant in these environments, but was neither as rapid nor as extensive as in the surface sand of the upper intertidal zone. Observed dissolution rates were at least ten times slower than those predicted using equilibrium solubilities and pore water exchange rates.The mobility of the condensate through beach sand was dependent on the oil/sand ratio. At low concentrations, bulk oil movement was insignificant, but, at higher concentrations, movement was rapid, independent of interstitial water flow and exclusively upwards. Only at higher concentrations was appreciable oil free in the sand interstices where it was subject to this buoyancy transport mechanism.  相似文献

New data are reported on the sulfur isotope composition and concentration of sulfide and sulfate in the upper part of the Black Sea anoxic zone as a function of the potential water density. The observations were performed at a station with the coordinates 44.489° N and 37.869° E three times a week every two days. A local negative deficiency in sulfate concentration up to 1.7% related to the sulfate reduction processes was recorded. This anomaly in sulfate concentration was short-lived and did not affect the sulfur isotope composition. In the upper part of the anaerobic zone, the δ34S(SO4) value varied from 21.2 to 21.5‰, which could have occurred from mixing of water masses from the oxic zone (21.1‰) and the Bottom Convective Layer (23.0 ± 0.2‰). The sulfur isotope composition of sulfide ranged from ?40.8% at a depth of 250 m to ?39.4‰ at the upper boundary of the anoxic zone with a H2S content of only 2.7 μM. Two models (mass balance and fractionation of sulfur isotopes using the Rayleigh equation) are considered to explain the differences in δ34S(H2S) values observed.  相似文献

Pelagic sediments from three cores in the northern tropical Pacific zone (the northeast basin) have been analyzed for particle size and composition, as well as for number, mass and the distribution of protosyngenetic authigenic manganese micronodules (MN) in them. The sequences are represented by Quaternary carbonate-free clayey–radiolarian, radiolarian–clayey oozes, miopelagic clays, sometimes enriched in radiolarians, pre-Pleistocene miopelagic and eupelagic clays, zeolite–clayey sediments, and zeolitites. Based on factual data (volume of wet sediment, weight of dry sediment and micronodules, their number and proportions of four fractions, the contribution of MN in sediment, and others), the values of different parameters were calculated. The obtained parameters are statistically similar, which allowed us to reveal background and anomalous horizons of sediments and to assume their sedimentation conditions. Similar values of РMN/NMN, Рfr > 0.05 mm, РMNsed and the mass of micronodules suggest that precisely these parameters reflect the main variations in conditions of pelagic sedimentation.  相似文献

We present and discuss the distribution of 3He and its relationship to nutrients in two eddies (cyclone C1 and anticyclone A4) with a view towards examining eddy-related mechanisms whereby nutrients are transported from the upper 200–300 m into the euphotic zone of the Sargasso Sea. The different behavior of these tracers in the euphotic zone results in changes in their distributions and relationships that may provide important clues as to the nature of physical and biological processes involved.The cyclonic eddy (C1) is characterized by substantial 3He excesses within the euphotic zone. The distribution of this excess 3He is strongly suggestive of both past and recent ongoing deep-water injection into the euphotic zone. Crude mass balance calculations suggest that an average of approximately 1.4±0.7 mol m−2 of nitrate has been introduced into the euphotic zone of eddy C1, consistent with the integrated apparent oxygen utilization anomaly in the aphotic zone below. The 3He–NO3 relationship within the eddy deviates substantially from the linear thermocline trend, suggestive of incomplete drawdown of nutrients and/or substantial mixing between euphotic and aphotic zone waters.Anticyclone (A4) displays a simpler 3He–NO3 relationship, but is relatively impoverished in euphotic zone excess 3He. We suggest that because of the relatively strong upwelling and lateral divergence of water the residence time of upwelled 3He is relatively short within the euphotic zone of this eddy. An estimate of the recently upwelled nutrient inventory, based on the excess 3He observed in A4's lower euphotic zone, is stoichiometrically consistent with the oxygen maximum observed in the euphotic zone.  相似文献

The bottom simulating reflector (BSR), the boundary between the gas hydrate and the free gas zone, is considered to be the most common evidence in seismic data analysis for gas hydrate exploration. Multiple seismic attribute analyses of reflectivity and acoustic impedance from the post-stack deconvolution and complex analysis of instantaneous attribute properties including the amplitude envelope, instantaneous frequency, phase, and first derivative of the amplitude of seismic data have been used to effectively confirm the existence of a BSR as the base of gas hydrate stability zone. In this paper, we consider individual seismic attribute analysis and integrate the results of those attributes to locate the position of the BSR. The outputs from conventional seismic data processing of the gas hydrate data set in the Ulleung Basin were used as inputs for multiple analyses. Applying multiple attribute analyses to the individual seismic traces showed that the identical anomalies found in two-way travel time (TWT) between 3.1 and 3.2 s from the results of complex analyses and l 1 norm deconvolution indicated the location of the BSR.  相似文献

To examine the growth dynamics of eelgrass, Zostera marina, in the intertidal zone of Seomjin Estuary, Korea, we surveyed environmental factors such as water temperature, underwater irradiance, tidal exposure, and nutrient concentrations in the water column and sediment pore water in relation to the shoot density, biomass, morphological characteristics, and growth of Z. marina inhabiting the upper and lower intertidal zones. The survey was conducted monthly from January 2003 to December 2004. The water temperature of the two areas displayed seasonal fluctuations. Underwater irradiance was significantly higher in the upper intertidal zone than in the lower intertidal zone. Tidal exposure was also markedly longer in the upper intertidal zone than in the lower intertidal zone, whereas tidal exposure was highest in the spring and lowest in the summer in both areas. Water column NH4 + and sediment pore water NO3 ?+NO2 ? concentrations were significantly higher in the upper intertidal zone than the lower intertidal zone. The eelgrass shoot density, biomass, morphology, and leaf productivity were significantly higher in the lower intertidal zone than in the upper intertidal zone. Both areas displayed a clear seasonal variation depending on changes in water temperature. However, leaf turnover time was significantly shorter in the upper intertidal zone than in the lower intertidal zone, with a higher turnover rate in the upper intertidal zone. Compared to the seagrasses in the lower intertidal zone, those in the upper intertidal zone showed more effective adaptations to the stress of long tidal exposure through downsizing and increased turnover time. These results suggest that tidal exposure, coupled with desiccation stress, can be a limiting factor for seagrass growth in the intertidal zone, along with underwater irradiance, water temperature, and nutrient availability.  相似文献

Modal analyses of 31 sand samples collected by piston coring document variations in sediment composition along and across the developing collision zone off southern Taiwan and help constrain sediment transport paths and, by inference, of sediment sources. Overall, sand composition from this region is dominated by lithic-fragment populations, with a QtFL average of Qt27F21L52. Three geographic domains are based on morphotectonics and variations in sand composition: (1) South China Sea and the adjacent slope of the accretionary prism; (2) suture zone south of southern Taiwan and north of the Luzon forearc; and (3) the Luzon forearc basin (North Luzon Trough) and immediate adjacent slopes. Sands from the accretionary prism and the suture zone contain subequal amounts of sedimentary and metamorphic lithic fragments (Ls51Lv5Lm45 and Ls47Lv5Lm48), respectively, whereas sands from the forearc basin are dominated by volcanic lithic fragments (Ls29Lv49Lm22). In addition, compositions of individual sand beds vary dramatically in the forearc basin. This heterogeneity indicates that sediments from different sources have been deposited sequentially, but do not typically mix during transport and deposition. Similar, but less dramatic, within-core variations occur over the accretionary prism.The major sediment input for the accretionary prism is from western Taiwan and is dominated by sedimentary and low-grade metamorphic lithic fragments. There appears to be a second sediment source, however, from southeastern China. This implies that a significant amount of sediment is the input from China to this region. The major component of sands in the suture zone is derived from Taiwan, but medium-grade metamorphic lithic fragments are rather sparse in these sands, considering the extensive and high-relief exposures of metamorphic rocks on the island of Taiwan. The major source of sands in the forearc basin is the active volcanoes of the Batan islands. Episodically, minor components appear to be fed to the forearc basin from the arcward slope of the accretionary prism, presumably by submarine mass wasting. This observation provides support for the hypothesized olistostromal origin for the Lichi Mélange of eastern Taiwan.  相似文献

A time-domain method is employed to analyse the resonant oscillations of the liquid confined within the two floating bodies. The velocity potentials at each time step are obtained through a finite-element method (FEM) with quadratic shape functions. The matrix equation of the FEM is solved through an iteration. The radiation condition is satisfied through a combination of the damping zone method and the Sommerfeld–Orlanski equation. A detailed analysis is made for two rectangular floating cylinders undergoing forced oscillation. The first-order potential reveals the resonant behaviour of the wave motion at certain frequencies ωi, which is similar to sloshing in a tank. More interestingly, the second-order theory further reveals that when the oscillation frequency is at ωi/2 or half of the resonant frequency, no first-order resonance is observed as expected, but the second-order resonant motion becomes evident, which does not seem to have been extensively investigated so far. Detailed results for two rectangular cylinders are provided to show some insights into the resonant effect due to the interaction between the bodies. The first- and second-order resonant phenomena have been observed and the result has shown that the second-order components have significant influence on the wave and force in some cases, especially at the second-order resonance.  相似文献

We provide an expert quality assessment of the data for 1932–1993 and used these data to perform the numerical analysis of the carbonate system of the aerobic zone in the Black Sea. The intraannual and long-term variations of the carbonate system are studied in the abyssal part of the sea for 1960–1993. We propose explanations of the intraannual variations of the analyzed system for various layers of the aerobic zone and reveal long-term variations of the pH values, total alkalinity, and the ratios of the components of the carbonate system. We discover and explain the observed increase in the concentrations of TCO2 and CO2 and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide pCO2, as well as a decrease in pH values and the concentration of CO32− in waters of the aerobic zone of the Black Sea.  相似文献

Nonlinear interactions of the internal waves of a tidal period with low-frequency synoptic-scale internal waves are studied using instrumental measurements of the current in the coastal zone of the Sea of Japan. In the course of spectral analysis of the data of instrumental measurements, it is found that a maximum in the spectrum of the kinetic energy of coastal waters in the vicinity of the semidiurnal frequency ω0 is surrounded by satellite maxima whose frequencies obey the relation ω s = ω0 ± Ω, where Ω is the characteristic frequency of synoptic-scale internal waves. The spectrum of the anticyclonic current component has a similar structure in the vicinities of the frequency ω0 and its first and second harmonics. The general theory of nonlinear interactions of weakly dispersive waves is used to solve the problem of modulation and the parametric amplification of tidal internal waves in the coastal zone using low-frequency narrow-band internal waviness. As can be judged from the literature, the effect of parametric modulation of tidal internal waves by low-frequency synoptic-scale internal waves has been recorded in the coastal zone of a tidal sea for the first time.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the impact of periodic internal waves on the oxygen/hydrogen sulphide co-existence zone in the open Black Sea. The numerical model is based on a set of transport/diffusion equations governing the evolution of oxygen/hydrogen sulphide concentrations and considering the reaction between them. The wave velocity field is determined by solving a spectrum problem for preinertial period internal waves, using the characteristic vertical density profile for summertime. A Geographic Information System (GIS)-aided flow-tracking technique was adopted to investigate nutrient exchange rates between specific benthic communities and overlying seawater in a fringing reef of Ishigaki Island, subtropical Northwestern Pacific. Net exchange rates of NO3 , NO2 , NH4 +, PO4 3−, Total-N and Total-P were estimated from concentration changes along the drogue trajectories, each of which was tracked by the Global Positioning System and plotted on a benthic map to determine the types of benthic habitat over which the drogue had passed. The observed nutrient exchange rates were compared between 5 typical benthic zones (branched-coral (B) and Heliopora communities (H), seaweed-reefrock zone (W), bare sand area (S), and seagrass meadow (G)). The dependence of nutrient exchange rates on nutrient concentrations, physical conditions and benthic characteristics was analyzed by multiple regression analysis with the aid of GIS. The spatial correlation between nutrient exchange rates and benthic characteristics was confirmed, especially for NO3 and PO4 3−, which were usually absorbed in hydrographically upstream zones B and W and regenerated in downstream zones H and G. NO3 uptake in zones B and W was concentration-dependent, and the uptake rate coefficient was estimated to be 0.58 and 0.67 m h−1, respectively. Both nutrient uptake in zone W and regeneration in zone H were enhanced in summer. The net regeneration ratio of NO3 /PO4 3− in zone H in summer ranged 5.2 to 34 (mean, 17.4), which was somewhat higher than previously measured NO3 /PO4 3− for sediment pore waters around this zone (1.1–8.5). Nutrient exchanges in zone S were relatively small, indicating semi-closed nutrient cycling at the sediment-water interface of this zone. NH4 + efflux from sediments was suggested in zone G. The data suggest that the spatial pattern of nutrient dynamics over the reef flat community was constrained by zonation of benthic biota, and that abiotic factors such as nutrient concentrations and flow rates, influenced nutrient exchange rates only in absorption-dominated communities such as zones B and W.  相似文献

The interannual variation of the monthly average (weighted average) concentrations of particulate organic phosphorus (PPOM) in the photosynthetic layer, oxycline, redox zone, and H2S zone in the open Black Sea is estimated based on long-term observation data. The suspension sedimentation rates from the studied layers are assessed using model calculations and published data. The annual variation of PPOM sediment fluxes from the photosynthetic layer, oxycline, redox zone, and upper H2S zone to the anaerobic zone of the sea and the correspondingly annual average values are estimated for the first time. A regular decrease in the PPOM annual average flux with depth in the upper active layer is demonstrated. A correlation between the annual average values of PPOM sediment flux from the photosynthetic layer and ascending phosphate flux to this layer is shown, which suggests their balance in the open sea. The results are discussed in terms of the phosphorus biogeochemical cycle and the concept of new and regenerative primary production in the open Black Sea.  相似文献

The third Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition(CHINARE) was conducted in the summer of 2008.During the survey,the surface seawater partial pressure of CO_2(pCO_2) was measured,and sea water samples were collected for CO_2 measurement in the Canada Basin.The distribution of pCO_2 in the Canada Basin was determined,the influencing factors were addressed,and the air-sea CO_2 flux in the Canada Basin was evaluated.The Canada Basin was divided into three regions:the ice-free zone(south of 77°N),the partially ice-covered zone(77°–80°N),and the heavily ice-covered zone(north of 80°N).In the ice-free zone,pCO_2 was high(320 to 368μatm,1 μatm=0.101 325 Pa),primarily due to rapid equilibration with atmospheric CO_2 over a short time.In the partially ice-covered zone,the surface pCO_2 was relatively low(250 to 270 μatm) due to ice-edge blooms and icemelt water dilution.In the heavily ice-covered zone,the seawater pCO_2 varied between 270 and 300 μatm due to biological CO_2 removal,the transportation of low pCO_2 water northward,and heavy ice cover.The surface seawater pCO_2 during the survey was undersaturated with respect to the atmosphere in the Canada Basin,and it was a net sink for atmospheric CO_2.The summertime net CO_2 uptake of the ice-free zone,the partially ice-covered zone and the heavily ice-covered zone was(4.14±1.08),(1.79±0.19),and(0.57±0.03) Tg/a(calculated by carbon,1Tg=10~(12) g),respectively.Overall,the net CO_2 sink of the Canada Basin in the summer of 2008 was(6.5±1.3) Tg/a,which accounted for 4%–10% of the Arctic Ocean CO_2 sink.  相似文献

The main factors influencing phytoplankton primary production in the surf zone of the Sundays River Beach, Algoa Bay have been characterized. These factors include cell concentration, chlorophyll concentration, irradiance, temperature and salinity. Good relationships have been obtained between cell concentration, chlorophyll concentration and primary production. The P-I curves showed dependence on temperature with a linear regression between temperature and Ik values. Light saturation was shown to occur between 300 and 510 μmol m−2 s−1 at normal field temperatures. Tmax and Tmin were found to be 34°C and 0°C, respectively; Pmax was 25°C. Salinity had a marked effect on primary production with Smax occurring at 60 ppt and an extrapolated Smin at 0 ppt. Pmax was found to occur at 30 ppt.  相似文献
