Three heat flow values for south-west England are presented. Two of the sites, Geevor and South Crofty, are operating tin mines on the northern contacts of the Land's End and Carnmenellis Granites, respectively, while the third, Wilsey Down, is a stratigraphical borehole 5 km north of the Bodmin Moor Granite. After applying topographic corrections values of 128·6 mW m-2 (3·07 μ cal cm-2 s-1) for Geevor, 128·9 mW m-2 (3·08 (A cal cm-2 s-1) for South Crofty and 67·3 mW cm-2 (1·61 cal cm-2 s-1) for Wilsey Down, were determined. The value at Wilsey Down is shown to be consistent with that for an environment in which the Hercynian orogeny was the last significant thermal event. An additional heat source term must clearly be involved at Geevor and South Crofty to account for the unusually high values at these sites. Radiogenic heat production has been determined on granites from these sites and in spite of the fact that it is high it does not fully account for the measured heat flow. A compilation of underground temperature measurements made in the nineteenth century suggests that high heat flow is a general feature of the mineralized belt. At least part of this can be explained in terms of hot spring activity recorded widely throughout the area but the ultimate cause remains to be evaluated.  相似文献

During the hydraulic-fracturing experiment in the German Continental Deep Drilling Borehole (KTB) in December 1994, microseismic activity was induced. Here we develop a technique for estimating permeability using the spatio-temporal distribution of the fluid-injection-induced seismic emission. The values we have obtained for the KTB experiment (0.25times10-16 to 1.0times10-16 1.0times10-16 m2) are in a very good agreement with the previous hydraulic-type permeability estimates from KTB deep-observatory studies. In addition, our estimates of the hydraulic diffusivity support the previously calculated value for the upper crust, which is of the order of 1 m2 s-1. However, this estimate now relates to the depth range 7.5-9 km.  相似文献

Volume, heat and salt transport by the West Spitsbergen Current   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
During the summer of 2000 (June-July) 14 CTD and ADCP transects perpendicular to the West Spitsbergen Current and along the western border of the Barents Sea were made. The measurements covered the area between 69° 43'and 80° N and 01° and 20° E. The main purpose was to follow changes in volume, heat and salt content of Atlantic Water (AW) on its way north. The strongest and most stable flow of AW was located along the continental slope where northward flowing currents exceeding 40 cm/sec were measured. A few weaker northward branches were also found to the west of the slope. South-directed currents were recorded between them and eddy-like mesoscale structures were commonly observed. Measured by vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (VM-ADCP), the net northward transport of AW volume in the upper 136 m layer decreased from nearly 6 Sv at the southernmost transect to below 1 Sv at a latitude of 78° 50'N. Similarly, heat transport drops from about 173 TW to about 9 TW and relative salt transport (over 34.92 psu) from 980 × 103 kg/sec to 14 × 103 kg/sec. Transport in the southern direction prevails at the transect located between 79° 07'and 79° 30'N. The calculated baroclinic geostrophic transport of AW volume, heat and salt in the upper 1000 m layer behaves similarly. East-directed transport dominates at the Barents Sea boundary while westward flow prevails on the western side of the West Spitsbergen Current.  相似文献

Summary. The ascent of a hot spherical body through a fluid with a strongly temperature-dependent viscosity has been studied using an axisymmetric finite element method. Numerical solutions range over Peclet numbers of 10−1– 103 from constant viscosity up to viscosity variations of 105. Both rigid and stress-free boundary conditions were applied at the surface of the sphere. The dependence of drag on viscosity variation was shown to have no dependence on the stress boundary condition except for a Stokes flow scaling factor. A Nusselt number parameterization based on the stress-free constant viscosity functional dependence on the Peclet number scaled by a parameter depending on the viscosity structure fits both stress-free and rigid boundary condition data above viscosity variations of 100. The temperature scale height was determined as a function of sphere radius. For the simple physical model studied in this paper pre-heating is required to reduce the ambient viscosity of the country rock to less than 1022 cm2 s−1 in order for a 10 km diapir to penetrate a distance of several radii.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption by rotifers Macrotrachela musculosa and Trichotria truncata from Spitsbergen tundra (77°N) was measured using the method of Cartesian divers. The metabolic rate of M. musculosa was: 0.205 10−3mm3 02 per g 10−6 per hour at 2°C, 0.201 10−6mm3 at 6°C and 0.616 10−3mm3 02 per g 10−6 per hour at 10°C. The metabolic rate of Trichotria truncata at 6° was 0.103 10−3mm3 per g 10−6 per hour. The relation between body weight and oxygen consumption by M. musculosa at 2°C is expressed with the equation R = 0.18W0.67, with R – oxygen consumption in mm310−3 per individual per hour and W – wet weight of an animal in g 10−6.  相似文献

Summary. Using nine IDA records for the Indonesian earthquake of 1977 August 19, we have formed an optimal linear combination of the records and have measured the frequency and Q of 0 S 0 and 1 S 0. The frequency was measured using the moment ratio method. The attenuation was measured by the minimum width method and by the time-lapse method. The frequency and attenuation were measured simultaneously by varying them to obtain a best fit to the data. A 2000-hr stack, the sum of nine individual records, for 0 S 0 gave a frequency of 0.814664 mHz±4 ppm. The values for the Q of 0 S 0 for the three different methods of measurement were 5600,5833 and 5700, respectively. The error in the estimates of Q -1 is about 5 per cent for the minimum power method. For 1 S 0 a 300-hr stack yielded a frequency of 1.63151 mHz±30 ppm. The values of Q for this mode were 1960, 1800 and 1850, respectively, with an error in Q -1 of about 12 per cent for the minimum power method.  相似文献

Summary. Temperature gradients and thermal conductivities were determined for a number of exploration boreholes in South-west England in order to verify and further delineate the anomalously high heat flow which has been reported. A pattern is emerging of an anomalously high geothermal gradient and heat flow of about 40°C Km−1 and 126 mWm−1 respectively over the Hercynian granite batholith, with normal values adjacent to it. A synthesis of related data indicates that the heat flow anomaly is associated with convection of hydrothermal fluids and although the mechanism is not well understood it may be caused by a combination of above average natural radioactive heat generation coupled with deep, permeable fracture systems within the batholith.  相似文献

Summary. The range of possible density distributions in the mantle of the Earth has been examined assuming a chemically homogeneous core. A discussion of various Earth models with homogeneous cores shows that the range is relatively small in the upper part of the mantle. For a density near the surface between 2.8 and 4.0 g/cm3, the density at 1000 km is between 4.1 and 4.8 g/cm3, and at 2000 km is between 5.2 and 6.5 g/cm3.
Graphs showing the distributions of density, gravity, pressure, and elastic parameters in two fairly extreme models are given. The first model has a density jump at the core boundary of 4.2 g/cm3 and only slight heterogeneity in D. The second has a continuous density distribution throughout the Earth and large heterogeneity in D.  相似文献

Summary. The thermal effect of a rapid injection of hot magmas into the lower part of the lithosphere is modelled as an increase in heat production through the invaded region. The change in surface heat flow and the uplift resulting from the thermal expansion are determined in three-dimensional axially symmetric geometry: they are expressed as the space time convolutions of a Green's function with the anomalous heat production.
The anomalies with shorter wavelength (compared to the lithospheric thickness) are attenuated. This filtering affects the surface uplift more than the heat flow anomaly; the attenuation effect is larger when only the lower part of the lithosphere is invaded.
The uplift time constant is of the same order as the heat conduction time if the lower lithosphere is invaded by magmas at a moderate rate (i.e. the rate of injection does not exceed the equivalent of 0.1 per cent of the lithospheric volume in 106yr). Fifty per cent of the total uplift takes place in about 80 × 106yr for a lithosphere 100 km thick. The uplift is slightly faster when the whole lithosphere is invaded. The heat flow anomaly is delayed when the lower part of the lithosphere is invaded.
The spatial extent and the timing of the uplift and heat flow anomalies are critical in determining the mechanism's feasibility. Magma injections explain rapid uplifts [> 100 m (106 yr)−1] only if the magma is supplied at a very high rate (i.e. at least 10 per cent of the lithosphere volume per 106yr). It is a feasible mechanism for uplifts that occur over longer periods of time (≊ 30 × 106yr) such as those that seem to have occurred when the African plate came to rest with respect to the mantle.  相似文献

North Atlantic Water (NAW) is an important source of heat and salt to the Nordic seas and the Arctic Ocean. To measure the transport and variability of one branch of NAW entering the Arctic, a transect across the entrance to the Barents Sea was occupied 13 times between July 1997 and November 1999, and hydrography and currents were measured. There is large variability between the cruises, but the mean currents and the hydrography show that the main inflow takes place in Bjørnøyrenna, with a transport of 1.6 Sv of NAW into the Barents Sea. Combining the flow field with measurements of temperature and salinity, this results in mean heat and salt transports by NAW into the Barents Sea of 3.9×1013 W and 5.7×107 kg s−1, respectively. The NAW core increased in temperature and salinity by 0.7 °C yr−1 and 0.04 yr−1, respectively, over the observation period. Variations in the transports of heat and salt are, however, dominated by the flow field, which did not exhibit a significant change.  相似文献

Summary. Differences between estimated average heat flow values for the Mesozoic and Cenozoic formations ( Q 1) and estimated average heat flow values for the Palaeozoic formations below the erosional unconformity ( Q 2) are calculated for the Alberta part of the western Canadian sedimentary basin. Significant heat flow differences exist for these two intervals and the map of Δ Q = Q 1– Q 2 shows that Q 2 is generally greater than Q 1 in the western and south-western part of Alberta, while in the northern part of the province Q 2 is generally less than Q 1. The regional variations of Δ Q are large, with standard deviation of 26 mW m−2 and average value –13.5 mW m−2. A regional trend of Δ Q correlates with topographic relief and the hydraulic head variations in the basin. It is shown that there is a heat flow increase with depth in water recharge areas and a decrease in heat flow with depth in the low topographic elevation water discharge areas when comparing the average heat flow in Mesozoic + Cenozoic and Palaeozoic formations.  相似文献

Summary. A variety of near-regional (300 km) data, including spectral amplitudes of Pg , surface-wave forms, and close-in (5–10 km) accelerograms have been used to build an elastic seismic source model for a 1-Mton explosion in tuff at near-regional distances. The model consists of: (1) a pressure pulse which injects 3 × 1012 cm3 of volume into the medium, (2) a vertical, upward force impulse that imparts 1018 dyn-s of momentum to the medium, each source component having a time duration of 0.6 s and a depth of 1.3 km. The force impulse appears to be required by two considerations: (a) the striking similarity, apart from sign, of explosion surface waves with those of their cavity collapses, (b) the observation of considerable SV energy leaving the source of the 1-Mton explosions JORUM and HANDLEY . Scaling curves have been constructed which fit the proposed source model. These scaling curves employ: very slow decrease, as (yield)−0.10 of the primary corner frequency; decay as (frequency)4 or (frequency)3 to high frequency. While these scaling curves are unconventional, they appear to be the only ones which can satisfy the near-regional data. The slow scaling with yield of the spectral carner frequency suggests that it is caused by something other than the equivalent elastic radius, e.g. the time duration of motion at the source. The results, at odds with similar studies at teleseismic distances, suggest that significantly different equivalent elastic sources are required at near-regional (as compared with teleseismic) distances; therefore, the effect of the upward impulse might not be seen at teleseismic distances. Consequently, these results probably do not pertain to the seismic discrimination problem at teleseismic distances.  相似文献

Since 1970, the number of heat flow observations in the Red Sea has increased fivefold. A new heat flow map is presented together with a table of observations. The new data confirm that the whole of the Red Sea is associated with high heat flow. The observations within 5 km distance of the deepest water of the axial trough have a mean of 467 mWm-2 (i.e. about eight times the world mean) and the observations from 50 to 170 km from the axial deep water have a mean of 111 mWm-2 (i.e. about twice the world mean). The heat flow distribution is thus typical of that associated with an active spreading centre. The observations are difficult to assess and interpret in detail because of the complex sedimentary and tectonic environment. The high heat flow extends at least as far as the Red Sea coasts.  相似文献

When the Norwegian State Power Board decided to plan an extensive water power development in the mountainous areas southeast of Narvik in northern Norway, a large mapping project was started. Detailed maps were constructed at a scale of 1:10 000 from aerial photographs taken in 1960. Several hydrometric stations were installed, and three glaciers were selected for mass balance observations. Storsteinsfjellbreen was the largest of these, and a special glacier map with 10 m contours was printed in four colours, to be used in the field work. Mass balance studies were carried out initially during one 5-year period (1964–68), and also later during another 5-year period (1991–95).
Results from these periods are compared with similar data from the Swedish glacier Storglaciären, about 45 km to the southeast. For all the years except one (1968), the net balance of these glaciers shows a similar pattern: positive years and negative years are synchronous.
A new glacier map was made from a special aerial survey in 1993 at the same scale and of similar accuracy as the first map, so a comparison could be made to calculate the change in glacier volume from 1960 to 1993. From digital terrain models it could be shown that the glacier surface had dropped more than 60 m vertically on the tongue, while the thickness increased above the equilibrium line by up to 20 m. The overall mass loss amounted to 16.8×106 m3 water during 33 years, which corresponds to an extra 2.6 l·s−1·km−2 (litres per sec. per sq. km) delivered to the river, in addition to the "normal" discharge
due to annual precipitation, which is 36 l·s−1·km−2 in the area.

Regional and annual variability in common eider nesting ecology in Labrador   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Nesting densities are often used to estimate breeding population size and with other measures of reproductive performance can be useful indicators of population status. These aspects of breeding biology often show considerable spatial and temporal variation. Between 2000 and 2003, we surveyed nesting common eiders ( Somateria mollissima ) on 172 islands in three archipelagos (Nain, Hopedale, Rigolet) on the Labrador coast. Rigolet was the largest archipelago (2834 km2) followed by Nain then Hopedale, and island density varied inversely with archipelago size. Overall means were: nest density 52.0 ± 141.9 (SD) nests/ha; nest initiation 12 June ± 12 days; clutch size 3.7 ± 1.2 eggs/nest; egg volume 98.8 ± 10.4 cm3; and clutch volume 392.3 ± 135.0 cm3. Rigolet had the highest average egg volumes and nest densities, the highest single island nest density of 1053 nests/ha, and the earliest average nest initiation date. We found significant differences in nest densities among archipelagos and across years; significant archipelago and year interactions were detected for nest initiation date and clutch size. Significant differences were found among individual islands for all response variables except egg volume. For egg volume, within-archipelago island differences were not significant, but between-archipelago differences were significant. Thus egg volume may be a useful diagnostic to identify population affiliation.  相似文献

Micromonas pusilla (Butcher) Manton & Parke appears to be a prominent member of the Barents Sea picoplankton community as revealed by the serial dilution culture method. Cell numbers frequently exceeded 107 cells 1−1, though they usually varied between 103and 106 cells l−1. A number of other identified and unidentified taxa were recorded and quantified. Foraminifera were examined in recent (<100 years) fine-grained glaciomarine muds from surface sediments and cores from Nordensheld Bay, Novaja Zemlja, and Hornsund and Bellsund, Spitsbergen. This study presents the first data on modern foraminifera distribution for fjord environments in Novaja Zemlja, Russia. The data are interpreted with reference to the distribution of foraminiferal near Svalbard and the Barents Sea. In Nordensheld Bay, live and dead Nonionellina labradorica and Islandiella norcrossi are most abundant in the outer fjord. Cassidulina reniforme and Allogromiina spp. dominate in the middle and inner fjord. The dominant species are dissimilar to species occurring in other areas of the Barents Sea region, with the exception of Svalbard fjords. The number of live foraminifera (24 to 122 tests/10 cm1) in outer and middle Nordensheld Bay corresponds with values known from the open Barents Sea. However, the biomass (0.03 mg/10 cm3) is two orders of magnitude less due to smaller foraminiferal test size, which in glaciomarine sediments reflects the absence of larger species, paucity of large specimens, and high occurrence of juvenile foraminifera. The smaller size indicates an opportunistic response to environmental stress due to glacier proximity. The presence of Quinqueloculina stalkeri is diagnostic of glaciomarine environments in fjords of Novaja Zemlja and Svalbard.  相似文献

Fundamental-mode Rayleigh and Love waves generated by several earthquakes situated along great-circle paths between pairs of seismograph stations have been analysed to obtain coefficients of attenuation, group velocities, phase velocities, and specific quality factors in the period range 18–80s in two regions of the South American continent. One set of paths crosses the shield region which lies on the eastern coast and another set traverses the mountainous region inland. the average attenuation coefficient values are clearly higher in the tectonically active western region throughout the entire period range than in the eastern or shield region.
Inversion of the attenuation data yielded shear wave internal friction ( Q -1β) models as a function of depth in the crust and upper mantle in both regions. A low- Q zone below the lithosphere is prominent in both regions. the results show that substantial variations of Q β occur in the two regions of South America. the Qβ values were found to be inversely related to the heat flow values or to the temperature.  相似文献

Summary. Temperatures of CaAl2Si2O8 (anorthite glass) shocked to pressures between 48 and 117 GPa have been measured in the range from 2500 to 5600 K, using optical pyrometry techniques. The pressure dependence of the shock temperatures deviates significantly from predictions based on a single high-pressure phase. Either a variable specific heat, or the existence of three phase transitions, at pressures of about 55, 85 and 100 GPa and with transition energies of about 0.5 MJ kg−1 each (∼ 1.5 MJ kg−1 total) can explain the shock-temperature data. The proposed phase transition at 100 GPa can possibly be identified with the stishovite melting transition. Theoretical models of the time dependence of the thermal radiation from the shocked anorthite based on the geometry of the experiment and the absorptive properties of the shocked material yield good agreement with observations, indicating that it is not necessary to invoke intrinsic time dependences to explain the data in many cases. Observed time dependences were used to calculate absorption coefficients of the shocked material of from about 2 mm−1 to greater than 24 mm−1– an increasing function of shock pressure. The assumption that the shocked material radiates as a black body is supported by the theoretical model, and by the close agreement between measured and calculated black body spectral radiance as a function of wavelength.  相似文献

The transports of mass, heat, and salt through the Arctic Archipelago are estimated by two different approaches. First: A baroclinic, rotationally controlled flow is assumed through the Arctic Archipelago and the Davis Strait, with all passages transporting at maximum capacity. Second: Mass, salt, and energy balances are considered for the upper 'cold core' in Baffin Bay. The mass transport in the first case decreases and in the second case increases with increasing salinity in the Beaufort Sea. It is thus possible to determine a salinity at which both approaches give the same mass transport. The outflow in the upper layers is estimated at 0.7 · 109 kg s−1 with a salinity of 32.9. The amount of water from the Polar Ocean entering the deeper (Atlantic) layer in Baffin Bay is more difficult to assess. A tentative value of 0.3 10·kg s−1 with a salinity cf 34.3 is proposed.  相似文献
