A 16-month data set of phytoplankton assemblages and environmental parameters were studied in the lower James, York (-Pamunkey), and Rappahannock rivers using several exploratory statistical approaches. Based on species composition and river station relationships, three site groups were established and subsequently identified as predominantly tidal fresh, oligo-mesohaline, and mesohaline sites. Phytoplankton assemblages within these rivers were influenced and subsequently augmented by the onset of the spring freshet which was different in 1986 and 1987. Five temporal assemblages of phytoplankters were also identified and designated into seasonal groupings of spring 1986, summer-fall, summer-winter, fall-winter, and winter-spring 1987. Discriminant analysis (MANOVA) evaluations were made for water quality parameters to site and seasonal phytoplankton assemblages and these relationships are discussed. Moving downstream along an oligohaline-mesohaline gradient, the nitrogen and phosphorus levels decreased and the phytoplankton composition was more similar at several corresponding site locations in the different rivers than at stations relatively close to each other in the same river. Within these data sets approximately 58% of the explained variance was associated with site (spatial) effects, 30% with temporal effects, and 12% with site-temporal interactions. A transition from dominant bloom-producing freshwater diatoms to estuarine species occurs from the tidally influenced freshwater zone downstream. This change may be rapid as the decline ofSkeletonema potamos, or more gradual, as withCyclotella striata andCyclotella meneghiania. These are replaced downstream bySkeletonema costatum, Cyclotella caspia, andLeptocylindrus minimus as dominant species.  相似文献

A two-year trawl study of Laguna Joyuda, Puerto Rico, a small, polyhaline lagoon with restricted oceanic exchange, yielded 803 crabs belonging to sixCallinectes species.Callinectes danae was the most abundant (35.7%), followed byC. sapidus (21%),C. ornatus (12.6%),C. bocourti (12.1%),C. exasperatus (1.2%), andC. larvatus (0.4%). Abundances of different species differed more spatially than temporally despite very homogeneous salinities.Callinectes bocourti andC. sapidus were most abundant furthest from the lagoon’s inlet, whileC. danae andC. ornatus were most abundant near the inlet and in the center of lagoon. Juveniles were least abundant in the center of the lagoon. Size frequencies of most species showed common trends with high percentages of small crabs furthest from the inlet, and high percentages of larger crabs near the inlet and central parts of the lagoon. Distributional patterns appear to be a result of complex interactions of habitat preferences and intra- and interspecific interactions among the crabs.  相似文献

An increase in the transmission of solar radiation in the UV-B region (specifically, 290–320 nm) is expected to occur as a result of anthropogenic degradation of stratospheric ozone. The potential impact of increased levels of UV-B radiation upon the biosphere is of ecological concern. In a previous study a community of estuarine organisms received a daily exposure to a simulated solar spectrum enhanced in UV-B radiation for a period of six weeks. A dominant species of diatom growing at the surface of these communities was isolated and identified to beMelosira nummuloides. Short chains of this diatom were irradiated for a four-hour period on each of three consecutive days. Fluorescent sunlamps filtered by a 290 nm cut-off filter (0.13–0.50 mm cellulose acetate) or a 315 nm cut-off filter (0.13mm Mylar ‘S’) provided a range of fluence which closely approximated natural fluence levels. A least squares regression analysis of the number of cell divisions on the biologically weighted fluence indicated a significant depression in the growth of this species by radiation in the 290–320 nm waveband.  相似文献

The distribution of Mn was examined in the bottom sediments and water column (suspended paniculate matter) of the Laurentian Trough. Gulf of St. Lawrence. A characteristic profile of Mn with depth in the sediment consisted of a Mn-enriched surface oxidized zone, less than 20 mm thick, and a Mn-depleted subsurface reducing zone. A subsurface Mn maximum occurred within the oxidized zone. Below this maximum the concentration dropped sharply to nearly constant residual levels in the reducing zone. The accumulating estuarine sediments are deficient in Mn compared to the river input of suspended matter and are definitely not the ultimate sink for manganese. Manganese escapes from the sediment by diffusion and resuspension, forming Mn-enriched, fine-grained particles which are flushed out in the estuarine circulation. 5.0 × 109gyr?1 of Mn, or 50% more than the river input of dissolved Mn. are exported to the open ocean. In spite of the efficient mobilization and export of Mn, the quantity exported is a small fraction (0.2%) of the total flux to the deep-sea sediments. This is related to the low levels of paniculate matter transported by the St. Lawrence River. The export phénomenon, however, is probably true of many coastal regions of muddy sediments and thus has interesting implications for the oceanic budget of Mn.  相似文献

Zooplankton was sampled in three tributaries of the Calcasieu Estuary: one flowing through an area of petrochemical industries, one through a municipal area, and one through an agricultural area. Synoptic comparisons among the bayous were made on eight trips over a two-year period. Additionally, each bayou was sampled intensively for small-scale distribution on four occasions. Numbers of all zooplankton taxa were consistently higher in the agricultural bayou than in either of the other bayous. Patterns of small-scale spatial variability also differed among the bayous. The agricultural bayou appeared to be a relatively healthy estuarine tributary. The municipal bayou was probably subjected to chronic environmental stress that is very severe in the vicinity of the municipal sewage and storm-drain outfalls. Evidence indicated that the industrial bayou suffered from frequent, but not continuous, episodes of environmental stress throughout its length.  相似文献

The210Pb dates from a salt-marsh sediment sequence at Tites Point, Severn Estuary, southwest England, were compared with the results of three other independent dating techniques. These methods are inspection of dated topographic maps for the presence of absence of the salt marsh, dating of artifacts in a well-defined horizon within the sequence, and counting annual bands. All four sets of dates showed good agreement to about 30 cm depth from the present marsh surface; thereafter, dates from the210Pb method are earlier than those from the other methods, which are themselves in agreement. It is concluded that a wide range of methods can be successfully used for dating salt-marsh sediments (e.g., radiometric techniques, topographic maps, archaeological evidence, annual banding). Where possible, it is important to confirm dates using at least two independent techniques.  相似文献

Spatial gradients in the flow over an estuarine channel   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Acoustic Doppler current profiles were measured for a twelve-hour period on February 21, 1997 across Thimble Shoal channel, lower Chesapeake Bay, for the purpose of determining bathymetrically-induced spatial gradients in the flow and their implications for the lateral momentum balance in estuaries. A least-squares fit to semidiurnal and quarter-diurnal harmonics was used to separate the tidal and subtidal contributions to the observed flow. The period of observation was characterized by onshore winds and subtidal inflow everywhere along the transect sampled but strongest in the channel. Spatial gradients in both the tidal and subtidal horizontal flows showed that the greatest lateral shears and convergences were found where the bathymetric changes were sharpest, i.e., on the shoulders of the channel. The ratio of the quarter-diurnal to the semidiurnal tidal amplitudes was greatest over the channel shoulders, for both the along- and across-estuary flow components, and indicated the importance of non-linear effects there. The nonlinear term caused by across-estuary divergence was larger than the Coriolis term over the channel shoulders. The nonlinear contribution was comparable to the Coriolis acceleration in the subtidal and tidal lateral momentum balances. For the tidal balance, the local accelerations were also as important as the Coriolis accelerations. Equivalent results in the momentum balances were obtained with another data set of October 1993. Contrary to the customary assumption, the across-estuary momentum balance in this area was ageostrophic.  相似文献

Rates of nitrification along an estuarine gradient in Narragansett Bay   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Rates of pelagic nitrification, measured using N-Serve-sensitive [14C]bicarbonate uptake, varied by as much as an order-of-magnitude among three sites along the salinity gradient of Narragansett Bay (Rhode Island, United States). Rates were always higher at the Providence River estuary site (0.04–11.2 μmol N I?1 d?1) than at either the lower Narragansett Bay site (0.02–0.98 μmol N I?1d?1) or the freshwater Blackstone River site (0.04–1.7 μmol N I?1d?1). Although temperature was the most important variable regulating the annual cycle of nitrification, ammonium concentrations were most likely responsible for the large differences in rates among the three sites in summer. At the levels found in this estuarine system, salinity and concentrations of oxygen or total suspended matter did not appear to have a direct measurable effect on nitrification and pH did only occasionally. Nitrification played an important role in the nitrogen cycle at all three sites. In Narragansett Bay, nitrification contributed 55% of the NO2 ? and NO3 ? entering annually, and was the major source during spring and summer. Water from offshore was the only other large source of NO2 ? and NO3 ?, contributing 34%. High summer rates of nitrification could support much of the phytoplankton uptake of NO2 ? and NO3 ?. In the Providence River estuary, the largest annual input of NO2 ? and NO3 ? was from rivers (54%), although nitrification (28%) and water from lower portions of the bay (11%) also made large contributions. Again, nitrification was most important in the summer. The high rates of nitrification in the Providence River estuary during summer were also likely to be important in terms of oxygen demand, and the production of nitric and nitrous oxides. In the Blackstone River, NO2 ? and NO3 ? concentrations increased as the river flowed through Rhode Island, and nitrification was a possible source.  相似文献

The physiochemical variability inherent to estuaries makes it difficult to identify those variables of importance to habitat selection by fishes. We used factor analysis to investigate habitat partitioning of fishes in Contraband Bayou, an oligohaline creek within the City of Lake Charles, in southwestern Louisiana. This bayou receives runoff and organic wastes from the City of Lake Charles and adjacent farmland (adding levels of complexity to an analysis of fish habitat preferences). Fishes were sampled from locations within the Contraband drainage in winter and summer of 1983 and 1984. At each location, 14 environmental variables were measured. Distribution of each common species in a season relative to these variables was characterized by calculating means of individuals for each environmental variable. A species' mean for a variable (the state of the variable where individuals of the species are most likely to be found) was interpreted as the species' “preference” for the variable. Factor analysis was used to identify trends in habitat partitioning among species, based on their preferences for all environmental variables. In all seasons, habitat partitioning separated typically freshwater forms from estuarine fishes, and separated forms more tolerant of organic pollution from less tolerant species. Some species entered the bayou only in summer, and in this season, additional factors were related to the preference of some of these species for areas with little cover that were normally shunned by resident species.  相似文献

Concentrations of S, organic C and Fe were investigated in profiles of sediments from two estuarine systems in the SW of Western Australia. In marine-affected sediments, inorganic S dominates total S and concentrations of total S correlate with Fe and not with organic C. In freshwater sediments, organic S dominates total S and concentrations of total S correlate with organic C and not with Fe. Molar Fe/S ratios in the estuarine sediments decrease with increasing salinity and approach unity for marine conditions. Net accumulation rates of S in sediments were estimated with a numerical computer model, calibrated with published data on profiles of marine sediments for diffusion of SO2−4, sedimentation rates and distributions of S. Measured depth-integrated reduction rates of SO2−4 in the marine-affected estuarine sediments approach those obtained for Fe-limited marine conditions at similar rates of sedimentation. Measured concentrations of inorganic S in anoxic freshwater sediments fit a numerically calculated relationship between inorganic S and sedimentation rate.  相似文献

Development and validation of an estuarine biotic integrity index   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We tested hypotheses about how estuarine fish assemblages respond to habitat degradation and then integrated these responses into an overall index, the Estuarine Biotic Integrity Index (EBI), which summarized observed changes. Fish assemblages (based on trawl catches) and habitat quality were measured monthly or biweekly at nine sites in two estuaries from March 1988 to June 1990. Submerged aquatic vegetation habitats were classified as low or medium quality based on year-round measurements of chemical and physical characteristics (phytoplankton blooms; macroalgae; dissolved oxygen; nutrients; dredged channels). We tested 15 metrics and selected 8 for inclusion in the EBI: total number of species, dominance, fish abundance (number or biomass), number of nursery species, number of estuarine spawning species, number of resident species, proportion of benthic-associated fishes, and proportion abnormal or diseased. Fish assemblages in low-quality sites had lower number of species, density, biomass, and dominance compared with medium-quality sites. Fish abundance peaked in July and August, and was lowest in January to March. The seasonal cycle in low-quality sites was damped compared with medium-quality sites. Abundances of fishes using estuaries as a spawning and nursery area and of benthic species were lower in low-quality sites compared to medium-quality sites. The individual metrics and the overall index correlated with habitat degradation. The EBI based on biomass did not do better than the EBI based on number, indicating that the extra effort to obtain biomass may not be warranted. We suggest the EBI is a useful indicator of estuarine ecosystem status because it reflects the relationship between anthropogenic alterations in estuarine ecosystems and the status of higher trophic levels.  相似文献

针对中国北方海湾水库间歇来水、连续取水和沉积物动态释盐的特点,建立水量与盐分耦合的数学模型,以青岛拟建的沐官岛水库为例,探讨水位变化条件下混合型海湾水库库水盐分的影响因素、超标风险与达标条件。模拟结果表明,在水库水位连续降低条件下,毫米量级的日蒸发量对库水盐分的累积效应显著。在不利水文条件下,受沉积物释盐、水分蒸发与人工取水的影响,混合型海湾水库长期存在盐分超标的风险。与水位不变时相反,水位降低时库水盐分浓度随着取水量的增大而升高;因此,当库水盐分存在超标风险时,可以通过减少日取水量实现库水盐分达标。为保障安全供水,在海湾水库设计与运营管理阶段,均需要综合考虑水量-盐分因素进行水库的日取水量调算。  相似文献

Three bacterial water quality indicators,Clostridium perfringens, enterococci, and fecal coliforms, were compared to F-RNA coliphages for their survival during chlorination at several municipal wastewater treatment plants in Rhode Island and seasonally during transport in a section of the Narragansett Bay estuary. F-RNA coliphages were used as the best available indicator for the survival of Noroviruses (formerly Norwalk-like virus), the most frequently identified agent for the most prevalent waterborne disease (an acute but benign gastroenteritis), which has yet to be propagated in tissue culture and for which there is no lower animal model. Inactivation of the enterococci and fecal coliforms during wastewater chlorination was much greater than that of the F-RNA coliphages whose inactivation was essentially the same as that of C.perfringens. Survival of the F-RNA coliphages andC. perfringens during winter transport down Narragansett Bay were comparable to each other and greater than that for the enterococci or fecal coliforms. During the summer,C. perfringens survived longer than the other three indicators, possibly because the virus-like (F-RNA coliphages) and the two vegetative bacterial indicators were more susceptible than theC. perfringens spores to the lethal effects of sunlight and elevated water temperatures during the summer. Based on these findings, F-RNA coliphages seems to be a reliable indicator of viral contamination and die-off in estuarine waters.  相似文献

The relationship between hydrological conditions and riparian helophyte vegetation was studied in two freshwater estuaries that differed in tidal regulation in order to assess the effects of large-scale hydrological regulation on the fringe vegetation. Vegetation and environmental variables were sampled for 206 sites in the Rhine-Meuse estuary (146 sites) and the IJsselmeer region (60 sites) in the Netherlands. These samples were classified into 10 vegetation types, all of which were dominated by tall helophytes. The most common vegetation types were dominated byPhragmites australis andTypha angustifolia, which formed both monospecific stands and mixtures. Tall Cyperaceae dominated three vegetation types (dominated individually bySchoenoplectus lacustris, Bolboschoenus maritimus, andSchoenoplectus tabernaemontani).Acorus calamus. Principal components analysis of the species composition of vegetation fringing open-water areas and associated environmental data revealed complex gradients incorporating differences in water depth, water-level fluctuation, were exposure, and sedimentation and/or erosion. The composition of the helophyte belts varied among the areas as the result of the differing times at which regulation occurred. Based on historical data, hydrological regulation of the estuaries has resulted in deterioration of intertidalSchoenoplectus andBolboschoenus stands, due to erosion and predation.P. australis stands have been invaded by terrestrial plant species or have been replaced byT. angustifolia. A scheme is presented of helophyte vegetation development under the influence of changes in the hydrological regime.  相似文献

Ethane and propane are low molecular weight hydrocarbons observed widely at trace levels in cold marine sediments where thermogenic sources are considered insignificant, but their biological sources remain poorly constrained. In this study, several C2 and C3 compounds including alkenes, alcohols, thiols and carboxylic acids with a C2 or C3 skeleton were tested for their relative alkane-producing potential in an anoxic estuary sediment. Maximum conversion efficiency of substrates to ethane or propane was observed in the sediment supplemented with ethylene (up to 38%), followed by additions with ethanethiol (0.01%) and propanethiol (0.003%). Experiments with sterilized sediment, 2-bromoethanesulfonic acid or NaNO3 were negative for alkane production, suggesting that methanogens were involved in alkane generation. Detailed investigation on ethanogenesis from ethylene showed that this reaction required H2 but at reasonably low concentration (< 120 nmol dissolved H2 l−1 slurry) and caused a slight stable carbon isotope effect (εethane/ethylene = −8.6 ± 2.4‰). The high ethane-producing potential, reasonable H2 requirement and extensive occurrence of ethylene make ethylene reduction a plausible explanation for ethane in cold marine sediment. Phylogenetic analysis was first carried out with an ethane-producing enrichment with ethylene as the substrate and showed a dominance of homoacetogenic bacteria and the methanogenic genus Methanocalculus. Although we cannot rule out the possibility that other methanogens in the gene libraries are responsible for ethanogenesis from ethylene, the dominance of Methanocalculus, with its hydrogenotrophic cultured representatives, is in accord with our biogeochemical observation that H2 is required for this reaction.  相似文献

The particle-solution (Kd) relationships of Pu(III,IV) in the Esk Estuary are investigated, using new experimental data together with a synthesis of our earlier work. Adsorption of 236Pu(IV) by a suspension of intertidal mud (40 mg L−1) from the Esk Estuary was determined after 1 h, as a function of salinity and pH, in a series of controlled laboratory experiments. Desorption of 239, 240Pu(III,IV) from this environmentally contaminated sediment was determined concurrently. The short term (i.e., within a tidal cycle) non-conservative behaviour of Pu(III,IV) in both the laboratory experiments and the estuary appears to be dominated by a rapid, reversible surface complexation reaction, although only a small fraction (<5%) of the 239,240Pu(III,IV) activity of the environmentally contaminated sediment is able to participate in the reaction. The existence of this exchangeable or labile fraction can explain the apparent dependence of Pu(III,IV) Kd on sediment concentration. Thus, a single Kd value is able to describe both the observed adsorption and desorption behaviour and the effect of sediment concentration, when desorption is expressed with respect to the labile 239,240Pu(III,IV) fraction. For example, in R. Esk water, the adsorption of 236Pu(III,IV) and the desorption of 236,240Pu(III,IV), over a two order of magnitude concentration range of unwashed Esk Estuary sediment, can be accounted for by a single Kd of ∼3 × 103 L kg−1. The Kd for the labile Pu(III,IV) fraction varies mainly as a function of salinity. pH is not an important factor over the pH range 4–9, although H+ ion exchange does occur, probably through a similar surface complexation reaction. The kinetic and equilibrium characteristics of the Pu (III,IV) sorption behaviour conform to the pattern observed by Jannasch et al. (1988) and other workers for a range of trace elements.  相似文献

Copper and arsenic underwent large changes in chemical form during the development and senescence of natural phytoplankton blooms in the Patuxent River, a subestuary of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Arsenate was rapidly reduced to arsenite and methylated species. At a total arsenic concentration of 20 nmol l?1, arsenate reduction rates ranged from 50 amol cell?1 d?1 to >230 amol cell?1 d?1, with the rate and extent of reduction dependent upon the concentration of arsenic, the dominant phytoplankton present, the season, and the degree of decline in phosphorus concentrations during bloom development. In general, the percentage of organically-associated copper was lowest (20–40% of total copper) during periods of rapid cell growth and highest (60–100% of total copper) during periods of cell decline or periods of dominance by red tide-forming dinoflagellates, a pattern associated with periods of high release of organic compounds during either bloom senescence or dense algal blooms. The end result of biological mediation was to increase the proportion of each element present in a less toxic form, thus affecting the potential toxicity to a natural ecosystem.  相似文献

Banana plants (Musa spp.) are very sensitive to Al, which is mobilized in acid soil conditions. These plants may, however, contribute to their own intoxication because their roots can excrete protons in large quantities. The authors studied the mobilization of Al by banana roots from clay minerals in experimental designs exacerbating the root–mineral contact. The plants were grown on agarose-gel or sand substrates previously mixed with smectite (montmorillonite) and kaolinite as sole source of Al. The pH and the ion concentrations in the aqueous and exchangeable phases of the substrates were determined as concentrations of Al, Ca, Mg and K in plants. In both agarose and sand substrates, pH significantly decreased in the close vicinity of roots, relative to the bulk substrate. This root-induced acidification involved a preferential mobilization of Al in kaolinite substrates and of Mg in smectite substrates, and thereby a significant plant uptake of Al and Mg from these respective substrates. Root-induced weathering of kaolinite and montmorillonite thus suggests that the mobilization of, respectively, Al and Mg are the limiting steps in the dissolution of these respective minerals, just as demonstrated in previous chemical weathering studies.  相似文献

A rhodamine dye tracer study was conducted over eight tidal cycles to investigate mixing and tidal exchange processes in Perch Pond, a Cape Cod embayment subject to recurrent blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate, Gonyaulax tamarensis. Dye injected at the inlet to Perch Pond during flood tide became well-mixed within the pond in one day and was removed at an effective first order rate of 0.36 d?1, equivalent to a 70% utilization of the maximum possible tidal exchange. This relatively high flushing efficiency can be attributed to a density-driven circulation within the pond, consisting of a subsurface inflow of high salinity dense water on the flood tide followed by removal of lighter surface layers through the shallow inlet during ebb tide. The formation of a frontal convergence near the inlet on flood tide is consistent with the observed distribution of G. tamarensis cysts and shelifish toxicity. It is also clear that phytoplankton like G. tamarensis, whose maximum growth rates approximate the rate of tidal flushing, can only bloom within the embayment by avoiding the outflowing surface waters. Mixing within the pond is probably less efficient and population losses greater during dry periods when the pond salinity is higher and the stratification weaker.  相似文献
