Determinations of40Ar/39Ar and U-Th-Pb are reported for three clasts from the Abee (E4) enstatite chondrite, which has been the object of extensive consortium investigations. The clasts give40Ar/39Ar plateau ages and/or maximum ages of 4.5 Gy, whereas two of the clasts give average ages of 4.4 Gy. Within the range of 4.4–4.5 Gy these data do not resolve any possible age differences among the three clasts.206Pb measured in these clasts is only ~1.5–2.5% radiogenic, which leads to relatively large uncertainties in the Pb isochron age and in the207Pb/206Pb model ages. The Pb data indicate that the initial207Pb/206Pb was no more than 0.08±0.07% higher than this ratio in Can?on Diablo troilite. The U-Th-Pb data are consistent with the interpretation that initial formation of these clasts occurred 4.58 Gy ago and that the clasts have since remained closed systems, but are contaminated with terrestrial Pb. The40Ar/39Ar ages could be gas retention ages after clast formation or impact degassing ages. The thermal history of Abee deduced from Ar data appears consistent with that deduced from magnetic data, and suggests that various Abee components experienced separate histories until brecciation no later than 4.4 Gy ago, and experienced no appreciable subsequent heating.  相似文献

40Ar/39Ar dating results on seven volcanic rocks from four areas of the Deccan Traps, India, suggest that volcanic activity more than 70 Ma ago might have occurred at least in limited areas. In the Igat Puri area, the uppermost flow shows an40Ar/39Ar age of 63 Ma, whereas a lower flow has an age of around 82–84 Ma.40Ar/39Ar ages of samples from the Bombay area also seem to favor the occurrence of volcanic activity more than 70 Ma ago. One rhyolite dyke from the Osam Hill in the Girnar Hill area shows a well-defined plateau age of 68 Ma, whereas two tholeiitic basalts from the Mahabaleshwar area indicate a total40Ar/39Ar age of around 63–64 Ma, though they show the effect of secondary disturbance in the age spectra. The volcanic activity(ies) more than 70 Ma ago may correspond to precursory one(s) for the main volcanic activity around 65 Ma ago in the Deccan Traps.  相似文献

We have determined the concentrations of 10Be and 26Al in GRV 99027 recovered by the 16th Chinese Antarctic expedition team, which are 14.1 ± 0.6 dpm/kg and 67.5 ± 3.4 dpm/kg, respectively. From the concentration of 10Be, we calculate a cosmic-ray exposure age of 4.4 ± 0.6 Ma for GRV 99027. The concentration of 26Al is too high compared to the 10Be exposure age, indicating extra production from solar ray. The exposure ages, petrologic and geochemical characteristics of mantle-derived Martian meteorites GRV 99027, LEW 88516, Y-793605, NWA 1950 and ALHA77005 are very similar, suggesting that these meteorites most probably were ejected from Mars in the same impact event.  相似文献

40Ar/39Ar age spectrum analyses of samples from Broken Hill, New South Wales, indicate that the region has experienced a complex thermal history following high-grade metamorphism, 1660 Ma ago. The terrain cooled slowly (~3°C Ma?1) until about 1570 Ma ago, when the temperature fell below about 500°C. Following granitoid emplacement ~1500 Ma ago, the region remained relatively cold until affected by a thermal pulse 520±40Ma ago, causing temperatures to rise to~350°C in some places. During this event, accumulated40Ar was released from minerals causing a significant Ar partial pressure to develop. Laboratory Ar solubility data combined with the40Ar/39Ar age spectra gives a local estimate of this partial pressure of ~10?4atm. The region finally cooled below 100°C about 280 Ma ago.40Ar/39Ar age spectrum analyses of hornblende, plagioclase and clinopyroxene containing excess40Ar are characterized by saddle-shaped age spectra. Detailed analysis of plagioclase samples reveals a complex diffusion behaviour, which is controlled by exsolution structures. This effect, in conjunction with the presumed different lattice occupancy of excess40Ar with respect to radiogenic40Ar, appears to be responsible for the saddle-shaped age spectra.  相似文献

Intercalibration of international and domestic 40Ar/39Ar dating standards   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Four international standards, Ga1550, MMhb-1, Lp-6, Bem 4M, and one domestic standard BT-1 have been intercalibrated. The repeated measurements on MMhb-1 with different mass demonstrate that MMhb-1 is inhomogeneous in age and its average age is 519.8 Ma. The results of Bern 4M and Lp-6 reflect that they have an invariable value of 40Ar*/39Ark (F) and the ages we obtained are consensus with their K-Ar age: Lp-6=127.7Ma; Bern 4M=18.2 Ma. Analyses of BT-1 age spectra, Ca/K and Cl/K spectra as well as inverse isochrons indicate that the sample is homogeneous and invariable and keeps close chemically, with its trapped argon isotope composition close to the atmosphere. The dating results show that age values are reproducible and steady, total fusion age, step-heating age, plateau age and isochron age are in accord with each other within the error range (2σ). Therefore, we recommend 28.7 Ma as the calibrated age of BT-1. We also discuss the variation in neutron flux gradients of Beijing 49-2 reactor. It was found that the neutron flux gradient varies considerably, and more monitors (standard samples) are needed to fix the trend of variation. The coefficient of the 49-2 reactor that transfers the ratio of production rate of 37ArCa/39ArK into Ca/K ratio is 1.78. This is different from that reported earlier, 2.0, which may be caused by the reconstruction of the reactor.  相似文献

Results of40Ar/39Ar stepwise outgassing experiments are reported for six slates, one hornfels and one metasilt-stone from the Lower Paleozoic Meguma Group of Nova Scotia, Canada. The age spectrum of the hornfels and of one slate collected from the vicinity of a granite contact have both been completely reset by the thermal effects of the intrusion. The latter, however, has not produced any recognizable mineralogical modification of the slate. Two samples in the collection contain potassium feldspar, possibly of detrital origin, and both have yielded discordant age spectra which cannot be unambiguously interpreted.Three apparently “clean” slates collected from localities well removed from the effects of the granite batholith have yielded quite well-defined age plateaus at ?415 Ma (revised decay and isotopic constants). The mean total gas40Ar/39Ar age or, equivalently, the mean K-Ar age is ?400 Ma. From these data we suggest a minimum value ?400–415 Ma for the time of initiation of the Acadian Orogeny in Nova Scotia which culminated with post-deformational “granitic” intrusion ?370–380 Ma ago.  相似文献

Gneisses within an Archean basement terrane adjacent to the southwestern portion of the Labrador Trough were variably retrograded during a regional metamorphism of Grenville age (ca. 1000 Ma). Biotites from non-retrograded segments of the gneiss terrane record40Ar/39Ar plateau and isochron ages which date times of cooling following an episode of the Kenoran orogeny (2376–2391 Ma). A suite of gneiss samples displaying varying degrees of retrograde alteration was collected across the Grenville metamorphic gradient. Biotites in these samples show no petrographic evidence of retrograde alteration, however they do record internally discordant40Ar/39Ar age spectra. Although the extent of internal discordance is variable, the overall character of the release patterns is similar with younger apparent ages recorded in intermediate-temperature gas fractions. The total-gas dates range from 2257±27 Ma (northwest) to 1751±23 Ma (southeast), suggesting that variable quantities of radiogenic argon were lost from the Archean biotites during Grenville metamorphism. The “saddle-shaped” nature of the discordant spectra indicates that argon loss was not accomplished through single-stage, volume diffusion processes.Biotites in portions of the gneiss terrane which were completely recrystallized during Grenville metamorphism are petrographically and texturally distinct. A representative of this phase records a40Ar/39Ar plateau age of 2674±28 Ma. This date is markedly inconsistent with regional constraints on the timing of Grenville metamorphism, and indicates the presence of extraneous argon components. Both the extraneous and radiogenic argon components must have been liberated in constant proportions during experimental heating because the argon isotopic data yield a well-defined40Ar/36Ar vs.39Ar/36Ar isochron corresponding to an age (2658±23 Ma) similar to that defined by the plateau portion of the spectrum.The40Ar/39Ar biotite dates suggest that the effects of Grenville metamorphism extent 15–20 km northward into the Superior Province. The limit of this overprint is approximately coincident with the northernmost development of Grenville age thrust faults in the Archean terrane. Therefore, it is proposed that the northern margin of the Grenville Province in southwestern Labrador should be located along the northernmost Grenville thrust fault because this represents both a structural and a thermal discontinuity.  相似文献

The five diogenites, Johnstown, Roda, Ellemeet, Shalka and Tatahouine, give scattered data in the87Rb/86Sr,87Sr/86Sr diagram. This can result from a disturbance which occurred later than 4.45 Ga ago. However, it is shown that if samples of sufficient size were analyzed, there meteorites could plot on the eucrite isochron and are thereby in agreement with a genetic relation between eucrites, howardites and diogenites. The age of eucrite differentiation from diogenites has been computed using data from the two families yielding an age of 4.47±0.1Ga(2σ) (λ=1.42×10?11a?1), the initial87Sr/86Sr ratio being BABI.  相似文献

14C has been measured in three North American and seven Antarctic meteorites with the Chalk River MP tandem accelerator. In most cases cosmogenic14C, which is tightly bound, was separated from absorbed atmospheric radiocarbon by stepwise heating extractions. Terrestrial ages obtained by comparing cosmogenic14C in the meteorite to that in Bruderheim are (7.2 ± 0.6) × 103 years for Yamato 7304, (11.6 ± 0.4) × 103 years for Estacado, and range from (32.7 ± 0.5) × 103 to (41.0 ± 0.8) × 103 years for six meteorites recovered at Allan Hills and its vicinity. The present upper limit to age determination by the accelerator method varies from 50 × 103 to 70 × 103 years depending upon mass and carbon content of the sample. The natural limit caused by cosmic ray production of14C in silicate rocks at 2000 m elevation is estimated to be (55 ± 5) × 103 years. “Weathering ages” were estimated for the Antarctic meteorites from the specific activity of loosely-bound CO2 considered to be absorbed from the terrestrial atmosphere on weathering. The accelerator measurements are in accordance with previous low-level counting measurements but have higher precision and sensitivity.  相似文献

The Kirin meteorite, a large (2800kg) H5 chondrite, fell in Kirin Province, China in 1976. A sample from each of the two largest fragments (K-1, K-2) yield40Ar/39Ar total fusion ages of 3.63 ± 0.02b.y. and 2.78 ± 0.02b.y. respectively.40Ar/39Ar age spectra show typical diffusional argon loss profiles. Maximum apparent ages of 4.36 b.y. (K-1) and ~4.0 b.y. (K-2) are interpreted as possible minimum estimates for the age of crystallization of the parent body.The40Ar/39Ar ages found for gas released at low temperature are about 2.2 b.y. for K-1 and about 0.5 b.y. for K-2, suggesting that this meteorite may have suffered two discrete collisional events that caused degassing of radiogenic argon. Modelling of possible thermal events in the parent body indicates that samples K-1 and K-2 were at a depth of less than 3 m from the base of an impact melt of a thickness less than 7 m and separated by no more than ~2 m from one another at the time of the heating event about 0.5 b.y. ago. Further, the duration of heating was probably less than a few years.Calculations from38Ar data yield exposure ages for samples K-1 and K-2 of about 5 m.y., similar to that found for many other H chondrites.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray-produced53Mn (t1/2 = 3.7 × 106years) has been measured in twenty Antarctic meteorites by neutron activation analysis.36Cl (t1/2 = 3.0 × 105years) has been measured in fourteen of these objects by tandem accelerator mass spectrometry. Cosmic ray exposure ages and terrestrial ages of the meteorites are calculated from these results and from rare gases.14C (t1/2 = 5740years) and26Al (t1/2 = 7.2 × 105years) data. The terrestrial ages range from 3 × 104 to 5 × 105 years. Many of the L3 Allan Hills chrondrites seem to be a single fall based on these results. In addition,10Be (t1/2 = 1.6 × 106years) and36Cl have been measured in six Antarctic ice samples. The first measurements of10Be/36Cl ratios in the ice core samples demonstrate a new dating method for ice.  相似文献

In several xenolithic ultramafic rocks from the Kola Peninsula, including a magnetic separate, abnormally high40Ar/39Ar ratios persisted at low and high temperatures. The lowest40Ar/39Ar ratio was consistently observed at intermediate temperatures (900–1100°C), indicating an apparent age of 2.8–3.1 b.y.; however, this may not indicate the formation age.The quantity of excess40Ar was estimated at each temperature fraction, adopting ages inferred from published Rb-Sr ages or the minimum40Ar/39Ar age. Excess40Ar is abundantly trapped both in mineral lattices and nonretentive trapping sites, but the trapping sites are different from those of in-situ radiogenic40Ar. The high temperature component of excess40Ar is considered to represent Ar dissolved during mineral formation in the upper mantle or the lower crust.A correlation between the amount of high temperature excess40Ar and36Ar exists for some samples. The40Arexcess/36Ar ratios of the rocks of probable upper mantle or lower crust origin vary from about 10 000 to 35 000, which may suggest large fluctuations of this ratio in the deep interior of the earth. The high value implies that most36Ar was already degassed from the earth's interior at least 2 or 3 b.y. ago.  相似文献

A87Rb-87Sr analysis of some enstatite meteorites has been made. Whole rocks plot on an isochron of age 4.508 ± 0.037b.y. and strontium initial ratio 0.69880 ± 0.00044 (2σ errors; λ87Rb= 1.42 × 10?11yr?1) . If the Norton County results are joined, we get an age of 4.516 ± 0.029b.y. and initial ratio of 0.69874 ± 0.00022. This result is indistinguishable from the whole rock isochron for H chondrites. It is interpreted as the age of condensation from the solar nebula. The identity of the87Sr/86Sr initial ratio with the ones for Allende white inclusions shows that this ratio was homogeneous in the solar nebula, and that the Rb-Sr fractionations observed between the different chondrite groups appeared only shortly before or during condensation accretion.Internal studies of the type-I enstatite chondrites Abee and Indarch and the intermediate-type Saint Mark's and Saint Sauveur have been done.Abee data scatter in the87Rb-87Sr diagram. For Indarch, Saint Mark's and Saint Sauveur, we obtained well-defined straight lines of “age” (T) and “initial ratio” (I): Indarch,T = 4.393 ± 0.043b.y.I = 0.7005 ± 0.0009; Saint Mark's,T = 4.335 ± 0.050b.y.I = 0.69979 ± 0.00022; Saint Sauveur,T = 4.457 ± 0.047b.y.I = 0.6993 ± 0.0014. Our result on Indarch agrees with the former result of Gopalan and Wetherill [5].A careful examination of the data shows that these straight lines are neither due to leaching effects by heavy liquids, nor result from terrestrial weathering. The “isochrons” for Indarch and Saint Sauveur can be mixing lines between enstatite and feldspar. The results are interpreted in terms of cosmochemical secondary effects: type-I and intermediate-type enstatite chondrites have been shocked 60–200 m.y. after their formation. This agrees with the idea of an early generalized bombardment of the inner solar system; this also indicates that type-I enstatite chondrites were rather situated in the outershells of their parent body and might be at the origin of the scatter of I-Xe ages of enstatite meteorites.Whole rock and enstatite from Bishopville, Cumberland Falls and Mayo Belwa have also been analysed. In these three aubrites, the87Rb-87Sr system is perturbed. Our Bishopsville sample might not be fresh and this makes the significance of our results uncertain. Cumberland Falls and Mayo Belwa probably suffered relatively recent shocks and open-system redistribution of Rb and Sr.  相似文献

Gorringe Bank is situated on the Europe-Africa plate boundary at the eastern end of the Azores-Gibraltar fracture zone. It has two summits, Gettysburg Bank to the Southwest and Ormonde Bank to the northeast. We applied the40Ar/39Ar stepwise heating method to date six samples of the alkaline volcanic rocks, two gabbros from the Ormonde Bank and a dolerite from the Gettysburg Bank. The results that the alkaline volcanism lasted probably for less than 6 Ma(66-60 Ma).Although the nature of this volcanism precludes any subduction feature during its setting, the alkaline volcanism of Ormonde is probably linked to Upper Cretaceous/Eocene compressive tectonic events. The basement rocks of Gorringe Bank reveal distrubed40Ar/39Ar age spectra. One plagioclase and one biotite from a gabbro give evidence for a thermic event whose age is tentatively estimated at about 75 Ma, and related to a variation in the direction of the relative movement between Europe and Africa. The more probable age given by a plagioclase of another gabbro and by a dolerite (110 Ma) corresponds to tilting northeastward of the Gorringe massif.  相似文献

We report an 39Ar–40Ar age determination of a whole rock sample of the olivine-rich, martian meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 2737. Those extractions releasing 0–48% of the 39Ar define an 39Ar–40Ar isochron age of 160–190 Ma, when evaluated in various ways. Higher temperature extractions show increasing ages that eventually exceed the reported Sm–Nd age of 1.42 Ga. At least part of this excess 40Ar may have been shock implanted from the martian atmosphere. We considered two possible interpretations of the Ar–Ar isochron age, utilizing the measured Ar diffusion characteristics of NWA 2737 and a thermal model, which relates Ar diffusion to the size of a cooling object after shock heating. One interpretation, that 40Ar was only partially degassed by an impact event ~ 11 Ma ago (the CRE age), appears possible only if NWA 2737 was shock-heated to temperatures > 600 °C and was ejected from Mars as an object a few 10 s of cm in diameter. The second interpretation, which we prefer, is that NWA experienced an earlier, more intense shock event, which left it residing in a warm ejecta layer, and a less intense event ~ 11 Ma ago, which ejected it into space. Our evaluation would require NWA 2737 to have been heated by this first event to a temperature of ~ 300–500 °C and buried in ejecta to a depth of ~ 1–20 m. These conclusions are compared to model constraints on meteorite ejection from Mars reported in the literature. The second, Mars-ejection impact ~ 11 Ma ago probably heated NWA 2737 to no more than ~ 400 °C. NWA 2737 demonstrates that some martian meteorites probably experienced shock heating in events that did not eject them into space.  相似文献

Cosmogenic14C has been measured in 12 chondrites and the stone phase of the mesosiderite Bondoc. For the chondrites analysed the activities vary between 44 and 72 dpm/kg; the low value of (4.5 ± 0.9) dpm/kg for Bondoc is essentially due to its large pre-atmospheric size and not to a terrestrial age of several half-lives of14C.In eight cases39Ar in the metal phase from the same meteorite specimens had been measured previously. The results are combined to derive the pre-atmospheric radiiR0 of the meteoroids and depth of burial of the samples investigated. Values ofR0 between 35 and 82 cm are obtained; of 14 samples ten came from a depth of 10 cm or less. The preponderance of samples from shallow depths is ascribed to asymmetrical ablation losses of the meteoroids during their passage through the atmosphere.A compilation of all published14C concentrations in chondrites shows that the variations between different specimens from thesame meteorites are almost as large as those for samples fromdifferent meteorites. Thus, there is no need to invoke different orbits of the meteoroids and a strong spatial gradient in the primary cosmic-ray intensity to explain variations of low-energy-produced cosmogenic nuclides in different meteorites.  相似文献

Samples of mylonite, ultramylonite and phyllonite were collected from 5 localities in the Anhui part of the Tan-Lu fault zone for40Ar/39Ar chronological studies. Among them 4 samples from 3 localities on the eastern margin of the Dabie orogenic belt yielded40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 128 —132 Ma; and 2 samples from the western margin of the Zhangbalin uplift and eastern margin of the Bengbu uplift gave the same40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 120 Ma. Isochron analyses and other lines of evidence suggest that the data are reliable. The data are interpreted as cooling ages of sinistral strike-slip deformation of the Tan-Lu fault zone. The younger ages from the north might be related to slower strike-slip rising. These results indicate that the large-scale left-lateral displacement in the Tan-Lu fault zone took place in the Early Cretaceous, rather than in Late Triassic (Indosinian) as proposed by some geologists. Therefore, this fault zone is an intracontinental wrench fault rather than a transform fault or suture line developed during formation of the Dabie orogenic belt.  相似文献

143Nd/144Nd,87Sr/86Sr and trace element results are reported for volcanic and plutonic rocks of the Aleutian island arc. The Nd and Sr isotopic compositions plot within the mantle array with εNd values of from 6.5 to 9.1 and87Sr/86Sr ratios of from 0.70289 to 0.70342. Basalts have mildly enriched light REE abundances but essentially unfractionated heavy REE abundances, while andesites exhibit a greater degree of light to heavy REE fractionation. Both the basalts and andesites have significant large ion lithophile element to light rare earth element (LILE/LREE) enrichments. Variations in the isotopic compositions of Nd and Sr are not related to the spatial distribution of volcanoes in the arc, nor are they related to temporal differences. εNd and87Sr/86Sr do not correlate with major element compositions but do, however, correlate with certain LILE/LREE ratios (e.g. BaN/LaN). Plutonic rocks have isotropic and trace element characteristics identical to some of the volcanic rocks. Rocks that make up the tholeiitic, calc-alkaline and alkaline series in the Aleutians do not come from isotopically distinct sources, but do exhibit some differing LILE characteristics.Given these elemental and isotopic constraints it is shown that the Aleutian arc magmas could not have been derived directly from homogeneous MORB-type mantle, or fresh or altered MORB subducted beneath the arc. Mixtures of partially altered MORB with deep-sea sediment can in principle account for the isotopic characteristics and most of the observed LILE/LREE enrichments. However, some samples have exceedingly high LILE/LREE enrichments which cannot be accounted for by sediment contamination alone. For these samples a more complex scenario is considered whereby dehydration and partial melting of the subducted slab, containing less than 8% sediment, produces a LILE-enriched (relative to REE) metasomatic fluid which interacts with the overlying depleted mantle wedge. The isotopic and LILE characteristics of the mantle are extremely sensitive to metasomatism by small percentages of added fluid, whereas major elements are not substantially effected, Major element compositions of Aleutian magmas are dominantly controlled by the partial melting of this mantle and subsequent crystal fractionation; whereas isotopic and LILE characteristics are determined by localized mantle heterogeneities.  相似文献

High resolution40Ar-39Ar age spectra have been measured on plagioclase and glass from two howardites. Both the plagioclase and glass from the gas-rich Bununu howardite show well-defined age plateaux, yielding distinct ages of 4.42 ± 0.04 and 4.24 ± 0.05 AE, respectively. These age patterns are rather well behaved and are interpreted as representing the distinct times of formation of plagioclase from igneous processes and of glass fragments produced by impact on the meteorite body. The release pattern for the glass from the heavily shocked Malvern howardite is undulating at low and intermediate temperatures but does have a high-temperature plateau. Its age spectrum indicates little apparent diffusion loss, but rather an extensive redistribution of either40Ar during the shock event or of39Ar during the neutron irradiation or both. The total K-Ar age of Malvern glass is 3.64 ± 0.04 AE and the high-temperature plateau is 3.73 ± 0.05 AE. The age spectrum of the Malvern plagioclase has an intermediate temperature “plateau” at 3.80 AE that represents 20% of the total40Ar content and increases towards a high-temperature plateau at 4.29 ± 0.04 AE containing 26% of the total gas release. It seems likely that the event which formed the Malvern glass also reset part of the plagioclase. The distinct histories observed for the different phases of these howardites are consistent with their formation from a regolith. The present results along with similar young ages for igneous clasts from Kapoeta clearly show that the regoliths were extant on the parent bodies of howardites and that they were subjected to violent impact events at least as recently as 3.7 AE ago.  相似文献

The thermal release patterns of He, Ne and Ar from samples of the Carbo iron meteorite show that virtually no fractionation of3He,4He,21Ne and38Ar occurs. Thus, conclusions about iron meteorites based on measured noble gas ratios will be unaffected by gas loss, and measurement of these ratios cannot yield information about possible loss. Further, noble gas loss cannot explain the abnormal elemental and isotopic patterns observed in some iron meteorites, notably hexahedrites.  相似文献
