The composition of neutron star atmospheres is calculated as a function of time including effects of diffusion, cooling and thermonuclear reactions. A seven-component nuclear reaction network with includes He4, C12, O16, Ne20, Mg24, Si28 and Fe56 is utilized. Neutron star models with different initial nuclear abundances are compared as to subsequent nucleosynthesis. It is found that the final abundances are independent of original composition assuming He4 as the major initial constituent. The final composition of the atmosphere is predominantly Fe56. Mass loss from an evolving neutron star is examined as a possible source of cosmic rays. It is found that a neutron star contributes only Fe56 significantly to the cosmic-ray spectrum.  相似文献

ROTSE‐IIId observations of the Be/X‐ray transient system KS 1947+300 obtained between September 2004 and December 2005 make it possible to study the correlation between optical and X‐ray activity. The optical outburst of 0.1 mag was accompanied by an increase of the X‐ray flux in the 2004 observations. A strong correlation between the optical and X‐ray light curves suggests that the neutron star directly accretes from the outflowing material of the Be star. The nearly zero time lag between X‐ray and optical light curves suggests a heating of the disk of Be star by X‐rays. No optical brightening and X‐ray enhancement was seen in the 2005 observations. There is no indication of an orbital modulation in the optical light curve. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

A model of rapid burster MXB 1730-335, the source of type II X-ray burst is proposed, based on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability due to interaction of relativistic electrons produced by the rapid rotation of a highly magnetized neutron star, and the infalling accreted matter through the magnetic funnel at the poles. Conclusions are made that type II X-ray burster may be a constant source of cosmic rays and such a mechanism may be the progenitor of some forms of nebulae.Permanent address: Imphal College, Imphal, Manipur.  相似文献

The constraints on the properties of neutron star matter from the mass of neutron star PSR J1614-2230 are examined in the framework of the relativistic mean field theory. We find that there are little differences between the σ potentials of large mass neutron star and those of canonnical mass neutron star. For potentials of ω, ρ, neutrons and electrons, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are larger than those to the canonnical mass neutron star as the baryon number density is more than a certain value. We also find that for the relative particle number density of electrons, muons, neutrons and protons and the pressure of the neutron star, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are far larger than those to the canonnical mass neutron star. For the relative particle number density of hyperons Λ, Σ?, Σ0, Σ+ and Ξ?, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are far smaller than those to the canonnical mass neutron star. These mean that the larger mass of neutron star is more advantageous to the production of protons but is not advantageous to the production of hyperons.  相似文献

We study the effect of the neutron star spin–kick velocity alignment observed in young radio pulsars on the coalescence rate of binary neutron stars. Two scenarios are considered for neutron star formation: when the kick is always present, and when it is small or absent if a neutron star is formed in a binary system as a result of electron-capture degenerate core collapse. The effect is shown to be especially strong for large kick amplitudes and tight alignments, reducing the expected galactic rate of binary neutron star coalescence compared to calculations with randomly directed kicks. The spin–kick correlation also leads to a much narrower neutron star spin–orbit misalignment.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of mass on the radiation of a relativistically rotating neutron star. The method of Haxton and Ruffini is used to find the radiation flux from a relativistically rotating neutron star. By extending the idea of a point charge orbiting a black hole, a pulsar is modeled by simulating a relativistically rotating magnetic dipole embedded within a neutron star. The resulting equations retain the mass of the neutron star, thereby introducing effects of general relativity on the radiation from the dipole. We present exact solutions to the modeling equation as well as plots of energy spectra at different rotational velocities and inclination angles. We also present plots of total energy versus mass and two tables containing a comparison of energy ratios. These demonstrate that, for realistic neutron star masses, the high speed enhancement of the radiation is always more than compensated by the frame dragging effect, leading to a net reduction of radiation from the star. It is found that the inclusion of mass not only reduced the special relativistic enhancement, but negates it entirely as the mass of the neutron star approaches the mass limit.  相似文献

We calculate the disc and boundary layer luminosities for accreting rapidly rotating neutron stars with low magnetic fields in a fully general relativistic manner. Rotation increases the disc luminosity and decreases the boundary layer luminosity. A rapid rotation of the neutron star substantially modifies these quantities as compared with the static limit. For a neutron star rotating close to the centrifugal mass shed limit, the total luminosity has contribution only from the extended disc. For such maximal rotation rates, we find that well before the maximum stable gravitational mass configuration is reached, there exists a limiting central density, for which particles in the innermost stable orbit will be more tightly bound than those at the surface of the neutron star. We also calculate the angular velocity profiles of particles in Keplerian orbits around the rapidly rotating neutron star. The results are illustrated for a representative set of equation of state models of neutron star matter.  相似文献

The physical conditions near pulsar surface that might give rise to gamma ray emission from Crab and Vela pulsars are not yet well understood. Here I suggest that, in the context of the vacuum discharge mechanism proposed by Ruderman and Sutherland (1975), gamma rays are produced by inverse Compton scattering of secondary electrons with the thermal radiation of the star surface as well as for curvature and synchrotron radiation. It is found that inverse Compton scattering is relevant if the neutron star surface temperature is greater than 106K or if the polar cap temperature is of the order of 5×106K. Inverse Compton scattering in anisotropic photon fields and Klein-Nishina regime is here carefully considered.  相似文献

The interest in X/γ-ray Astronomy has grown enormously in the last decades thanks to the ability to send X-ray space missions above the Earth’s atmosphere. There are more than half a million X-ray sources detected and over a hundred missions (past and currently operational) devoted to the study of cosmic X/γ rays. With the improved sensibilities of the currently active missions new detections occur almost on a daily basis. Among these, neutron-star X-ray binaries form an important group because they are among the brightest extra-solar objects in the sky and are characterized by dramatic variability in brightness on timescales ranging from milliseconds to months and years. Their main source of power is the gravitational energy released by matter accreted from a companion star and falling onto the neutron star in a relatively close binary system.  相似文献

The gamma-ray burst GR170817 A associated with GW170817 is subluminous and subenergetic compared with other typical short gamma-ray bursts. It may be due to a relativistic jet viewed off-axis, or a structured jet or cocoon emission. Giant flares from magnetars may possibly be ruled out. However, the luminosity and energetics of GRB 170817 A are coincident with those of magnetar giant flares. After the coalescence of a binary neutron star, a hypermassive neutron star may be formed. The hypermassive neutron star may have a magnetar-strength magnetic field. During the collapse of this hypermassive neutron star, magnetic field energy will also be released. This giant-flare-like event may explain the luminosity and energetics of GRB 170817 A. Bursts with similar luminosity and energetics are expected in future neutron star-neutron star or neutron star-black hole mergers.

We investigate the stochastic gravitational wave background that results from neutron star birth throughout the Universe. The neutron star birth rate, as a function of redshift, is calculated using an observation-based model for the evolving star formation rate, together with an estimate of the rate of core-collapse supernovae in the nearby Universe and an estimate of the neutron star/black hole branching ratio. Using three sample waveforms, based on numerical models of stellar core collapse by Zwerger & Müller, the spectral flux density, spectral strain, spectral energy density and duty cycle of the background have been computed. Our results show, contrary to recent claims, that the spectrum of the stochastic background clearly reflects the different physics in the core-collapse models. For a star formation model that is corrected for dust extinction, the neutron star formation rate throughout the Universe is high enough to result in a nearly continuous background of gravitational waves, with spectral features that can be related to emission mechanisms.  相似文献

Summary. Soft X–ray Transients (SXRTs) have long been suspected to contain old, weakly magnetic neutron stars that have been spun up by accretion torques. After reviewing their observational properties, we analyse the different regimes that likely characterise the neutron stars in these systems across the very large range of mass inflow rates, from the peak of the outbursts to the quiescent emission. While it is clear that close to the outburst maxima accretion onto the neutron star surface takes place, as the mass inflow rate decreases, accretion might stop at the magnetospheric boundary because of the centrifugal barrier provided by the neutron star. For low enough mass inflow rates (and sufficiently short rotation periods), the radio pulsar mechanism might turn on and sweep the inflowing matter away. The origin of the quiescent emission, observed in a number of SXRTs at a level of , plays a crucial role in constraining the neutron star magnetic field and spin period. Accretion onto the neutron star surface is an unlikely mechanism for the quiescent emission of SXRTs, as it requires very low magnetic fields and/or long spin periods. Thermal radiation from a cooling neutron star surface in between the outbursts can be ruled out as the only cause of the quiescent emission. We find that accretion onto the neutron star magnetosphere and shock emission powered by an enshrouded radio pulsar provide far more plausible models. In the latter case the range of allowed neutron star spin periods and magnetic fields is consistent with the values recently inferred from the properties of kHz quasi-periodic oscillation in low mass X–ray binaries. If quiescent SXRTs contain enshrouded radio pulsars, they provide a missing link between X–ray binaries and millisecond pulsars. Received 4 November 1997; Accepted 15 April 1998  相似文献

Observational evidence, and theoretical models of the magnetic field evolution of neutron stars is discussed. Observational data indicates that the magnetic field of a neutron star decays significantly only if it has been a member of a close interacting binary. Theoretically, the magnetic field evolution has been related to the processing of a neutron star in a binary system through the spin evolution of the neutron star, and also through the accretion of matter on the neutron star surface. I describe two specific models, one in which magnetic flux is expelled from the superconducting core during spin-down, via a copuling between Abrikosov fluxoids and Onsager-Feynman vortices; and another in which the compression and heating of the stellar crust by the accreted mass drastically reduces the ohmic decay time scale of a magnetic field configuration confined entirely to the crust. General remarks about the behaviour of the crustal field under ohmic diffusion are also made.  相似文献

The production of pairs of magnetic monopoles-antimonopoles should be expected in the interactions of the high energy particles accelerated by pulsars. In the frame of the Sturrock model, the interactions of the very high energy protons emitted from the polar caps with the secondary electrons can be a source of magnetic monopoles. It may be the dominating process in very young pulsars such as the Crab pulsar. In the polar gap model of Ruderman and Sutherland, magnetic monopoles can be created by the electrons accelerated across the cap and interacting with the neutron star crust or by the negatons and positrons interacting head-on inside the sparks.Half of these monopoles are accelerated towards the interstellar medium by the pulsar magnetic field and the others are likely to be trapped inside the neutron star crust. This leads to a decrease in the pulsar magnetic field which would imply that the characteristic age may not give the true age of the pulsar This can be related to the discrepancy between and the real age of the Crab pulsar and the kinematical ages obtained from the measurement of the proper motion of some pulsars. Furthermore, the trapping of magnetic monopoles close under the surface of the neutron star perturbates the pulsar electrodynamics. To have such observable effects, it is shown that the cross-sections for the magnetic monopoles production can be several orders of magnitude smaller than the upper limits so far derived from cosmic rays or accelerator data. The possibility that the magnetic monopoles, accelerated outwards, are responsible for the highest energy extensive air showers, is considered. The production of an avalanche of secondary monopoles, due to acceleration by the magnetic field in the neutron star crust, is possible and the consequences of this process are considered.  相似文献

We find that in general relativity slow down of the pulsar rotation due to the magnetodipolar radiation is more faster for the strange star with comparison to that for the ordinary neutron star of the same mass. Comparison with astrophysical observations on pulsars spindown data may provide an evidence for the strange star existence and, thus, serve as a test for distinguishing it from the neutron star.  相似文献

Recently, a 16-day periodicity in a fast radio burst was reported. We propose that this 16-day periodicity may be due to forced precession of the neutron star by a fallback disk. When the rotation axis is misaligned with respect to the normal direction of the disk plane, the neutron star will precess. The eccentricity of the neutron star may be due to rotation or strong magnetic field, or similar reasons. We found that the 16-day period may be understood using typical masses of the fallback disk. Polarization observations and information about the neutron star rotation period may help to discriminate different models. The possible precession observations in pulsars, magnetars and fast radio bursts may be understood together considering forced precession by a fallback disk.  相似文献

During the evolution of the neutron star its magnetic field first decays exponentially with the time and then may becomes quasi-stationary. The non-decaying magnetic field of the neutron star is generated by a degenerate electron gas which is in the Landau orbital ferromagnetism (LOFER) state. Possibly, due to the neutron star transition into the LOFER state, magnetic fields remained sufficiently strong in the case of such old magnetic neutron stars as powerful X-ray sources (e.g., Her X-1), millisecond pulsars and the binary pulsar PSR 0655+64.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new result, namely that the primal magnetic field of the collapsed core during a supernova explosion will, as a result of the conservation of magnetic flux, receive a massive boost to more than 90 times its original value by the Pauli paramagnetization of the highly degenerate relativistic electron gas just after the formation of the neutron star. Thus, the observed super-strong magnetic field of neutron stars may originate from the induced Pauli paramagnetization of the highly degenerate relativistic electron gas in the interior of the neutron star. We therefore have an apparently natural explanation for the surface magnetic field of a neutron star.  相似文献

The long awaited event of the detection of a gravitational wave from a binary neutron star merger and its electromagnetic counterparts marked the beginning of a new era in observational astrophysics. The brand-new field of gravitational wave astronomy combined with multi-messenger observations will uncover violent, highly energetic astrophysical events that could not be explored before by humankind. This article focuses on the presumable appearance of a hadron–quark phase transition and the formation of regions of deconfined quark matter in the interior of a neutron star merger product. The evolution of density and temperature profiles inside the inner region of the produced hypermassive/supramassive neutron star advises an incorporation of a hadron–quark phase transition in the equation of state of neutron star matter. The highly densed and hot neutron star matter of the remnant populate regions in the QCD phase diagram where a non neglectable amount of deconfined quark matter is expected to be present. If a strong hadron–quark phase transition would happen during the post-merger phase, it will be imprinted in the spectral properties of the emitted gravitational wave signal and might give an additional contribution to the dynamically emitted outflow of mass.  相似文献
