Spectra of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) were obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at medium resolution with the grating spectrometer in the photometer (PHT-S) and/or at high resolution with the short wavelength spectrometer (SWS) and long wavelength spectrometer (LWS) in April 1996 (Crovisier et al., 1996), September–October 1996 (Crovisier et al., 1997a, b) and December 1997, at distances from the Sun of 4.6, 2.9 and 3.9 AU, respectively. For the first time, high-resolution spectra of a comet covering the entire 2.4 to 200 μm spectral range were obtained. The vibrational bands of H2O, CO2 and CO are detected in emission with PHT-S. Relative production rates of 100:22:70 are derived for H2O:CO2:CO at 3 AU pre-perihelion. H2O is observed at high spectral resolution in the ν3 group of bands around 2.7 μm and the ν2 group around 6 μm with SWS, and in several rotational lines in the 100–180 μm region with LWS. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the ν3 band observed on September–October 1996 allows accurate determinations of the water rotational temperature (28 K) and of its ortho-to-para ratio(2.45 ± 0.10, which significantly differs from the high temperature limit and corresponds to a spin temperature of 25 K). Longward of 6 μm the spectrum is dominated by dust thermal continuum emission, upon which broad emission features are superimposed. The wavelengths of the emission peaks correspond to those of Mg-rich crystalline olivine (forsterite). In the September–October 1996 spectra, emission features at 45 and 65 μm and possible absorption at 2.9–3.2 μm suggest that grains of water ice were present at 3 AU from the Sun. The observations made post-perihelion in late December 1997 led to the detections of H2O, CO2 and CO at 3.9 AU from the Sun (Figures 1 and 2). The production rates were ≈3.0 × 1028,3.5 × 1028 and ≈1.5 × 1029 s-1, respectively. This corresponds to H2O:CO2:CO = 100:110:500 and confirms that at such distances from the Sun, cometary activity is dominated by sublimation of CO and CO2 rather than by H2O. The Mauritius Radio Telescope (MRT) has been built with the main objective of surveying the southern sky at meter wavelengths. MRT is a Fourier synthesis, T-shaped non-coplanar array. It consists of a2048 m long East-West arm with 1024 fixed helices and a 880 m long South arm with 15 trolleys. Each trolley has four helices. A 512 channel, 2-bit 3-level complex correlation receiver is used to process the data from the EW and S group outputs. At least 60 days of observing are required for obtaining the Fourier components of the brightness distribution of the sky required to complete the survey. The MRT survey will be one of the most extensive survey at low frequencies providing a moderately deep radio catalog reaching a source density of about 2 × 104 sr-1 over most of the sky south of δ=-10°with an angular resolution of 4' × 4.6' sec (δ) and a limiting flux density of 200 mJy (3 σ level) at 151 MHz. This paper will describe the telescope, the observations carried out so far, challenges of imaging with the data acquired over a period exceeding four years with a non-coplanar array, and summarises the results obtained so far. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary We report 1.2, 1.6, 2.2 and 3.6 μm slit scan observations of the young low-luminosity stars Elias 22 (also known as GSS 31) in the Rho Ophiuchus dark cloud and Glass I in the Chamaeleon dark cloud. We discovered an infrared companion to Elias 22 at a projected separation of 2.0 arcsec (320 AU) and an optical/infrared companion to Glass I at a projected separation of 2.9 arcsec (410 AU). The companion of Elias 22 is a very cool optically almost invisible object (∼1000 K) less luminous than the primary, while the companion to Glass I is an optically visible late-type star with an infrared excess so large that it is actually bolometrically brighter than the primary. In both cases the infrared excess is likely to be due to hot circumstellar dust grains heated by a central young star (much more obscured in the case of Elias 22 than in the case of Glass I). We outline a new method to determine the mass ratio of such systems assuming that both components lie on an isochrone in the H-R diagram. If the companions are in a bound orbit, the estimated specific angular momentum exceeds or is of the order of 1021 cm2 s−1, only one order of magnitude larger than that of the Sun-Jupiter system. Based on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory at La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

The Ulysses spacecraft is orbiting the Sun on a highly inclined ellipse (i = 79°). After its Jupiter flyby in 1992 at a heliocentric distance of 5.4 AU, the spacecraftreapproached the inner solar system, flew over the Suns south polar region in September 1994,crossed the ecliptic plane at a distance of 1.3 AU in March 1995, and flew over the Suns northpolar region in July 1995. We report on dust impact data obtained with the dust detector onboardUlysses between January 1993 and December 1995. We publish and analyse the complete dataset of 509 recorded impacts of dust particles with masses between 10−16 g–10−7 g. Together with 968 dust impacts from launch until the end of 1992 published earlier (Grün et al., 1995c), information about 1477 particles detected with theUlysses sensor between October 1990 and December 1995 is now available. The impact ratemeasured between 1993 and 1995 stayed relatively constant at about 0.4 impacts per day andvaried by less than a factor of ten. Most of the impacts recorded outside about 3.5 AU arecompatible with particles of interstellar origin. Two populations of interplanetary particles havebeen recognized: big micrometer-sized particles close to the ecliptic plane and smallsub-micrometer-sized particles at high ecliptic latitudes. The observed impact rate is comparedwith a model for the flux of interstellar dust particles which gives relatively good agreement withthe observed impact rate. No change in the instruments noise characteristics or degradation of thechanneltron could be revealed during the three-year period.  相似文献

Several analytical presentations of the three-dimensional distribution of interplanetary dust have been derived in the literature from measurements of the zodiacal light such as fan, ellipsoid, sombrero, and multilobe models. To provide a basis for comparisons with infrared measurements these classical and some new optical approaches are reviewed and compared with observations of the zodiacal light all over the sky and in selected viewing directions. Strengths and weaknesses of the models are discussed and qualitatively explained. It is shown that multilobe models can be refuted. The remaining models predict in surprising agreement that the interplanetary spatial dust density decreases “above” the Earth's orbit by a factor of 2 within 0.2 to 0.3 AU. Beyond about 3 AU in the ecliptic plane and about 1.5 AU off the ecliptic no reliable density values can be obtained from the zodiacal light.  相似文献

We examine daily records of sunspot group areas (measured in millionths of a solar hemisphere or μHem) for the last 130 years to determine the rate of decay of sunspot group areas. We exclude observations of groups when they are more than 60° in longitude from the central meridian and only include data when at least three days of observations are available following the date of maximum area for a group’s disk passage. This leaves data for over 18 000 measurements of sunspot group decay. We find that the decay rate increases linearly from 28 μHem day−1 to about 140 μHem day−1 for groups with areas increasing from 35 μHem to 1000 μHem. The decay rate tends to level off for groups with areas larger than 1000 μHem. This behavior is very similar to the increase in the number of sunspots per group as the area of the group increases. Calculating the decay rate per individual sunspot gives a decay rate of about 3.65 μHem day−1 with little dependence upon the area of the group. This suggests that sunspots decay by a Fickian diffusion process with a diffusion coefficient of about 10 km2 s−1. Although the 18 000 decay rate measurements are lognormally distributed, this can be attributed to the lognormal distribution of sunspot group areas and the linear relationship between area and decay rate for the vast majority of groups. We find weak evidence for variations in decay rates from one solar cycle to another and for different phases of each sunspot cycle. However, the strongest evidence for variations is with latitude and the variations with cycle and phase of each cycle can be attributed to this variation. High latitude spots tend to decay faster than low latitude spots.  相似文献

We have performed a survey of the characteristics of two types of large spatial-scale solar-wind structures, stream interaction regions (SIRs), and interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), near 5.3 AU, using solar-wind observations from Ulysses. Our study is confined to the three aphelion passes of Ulysses, and also within ± 10° of the solar ecliptic plane, covering a part of 1992, 1997 – 1998, and 2003 – 2005, representing three slices of different phases of the solar activity cycle. Overall, there are 54 SIRs and 60 ICMEs in the survey. Many are merged in hybrid events, suggesting that they have undergone multiple interactions prior to reaching Jovian orbit. About 91% of SIRs occur with shocks, with 47% of such shocks being forward – reverse shock pairs. The solar-wind velocity sometimes stays constant or even decreases within the interaction region near 5.3 AU, in contrast with the gradual velocity increase during SIRs at 1 AU. Shocks are driven by 58% of ICMEs, with 94% of them being forward shocks. Some ICMEs seem to have multiple small flux ropes with different scales and properties. We quantitatively compare various properties of SIRs and ICMEs at 5.3 AU, and study their statistical distributions and variations with solar activity. The width, maximum dynamic pressure, and peak perpendicular pressure of SIRs all become larger than ICMEs. Dynamic pressure (P dyn) is expected to be important for Jovian magnetospheric activity. We have examined the distributions of P dyn of SIRs, ICMEs, and general solar wind, but these cannot explain the observed bimodal distribution of the location of the Jovian magnetopause. By comparing the properties of SIRs and ICMEs at 0.72, 1, and 5.3 AU, we find that the ICME expansion slows down significantly between 1 and 5.3 AU. Some transient and small streams in the inner heliosphere have merged into a single interaction region. Photoelectric observations of night sky brightness at different zenith distances in blue, yellow and red colours have been carried out at Abu-Simbel site. Variations in the night sky brightness and (B-V) colour index with time are detected. These variations have been explained by the change of the galactic latitude of the observed point with time. The deduced results of night sky brightness have been compared with that obtained before at other sites. It has been found for both blue and yellow colours, that Abu-Simbel is the darkest site especially for zenith distances equal or greater than 60°. The present values of night sky brightness and colour have been obtained for the first time at Abu-Simbel site. The average night sky brightness at the galactic plane is 22.58 mag/arc sec2 for blue and 21.66 mag/arc sec2 for yellow. We have examined 426Voyager fields distributed across the sky for O VI (γγ 1032/1038 å) emission from the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium. No such emission was detected in any of our observed fields. Our most constraining limit was a 90% confidence upper limit of 2600 photons cm?2 sr?1 s?1 on the doublet emission in the direction (l, b) = (117.3, 50.6). Combining this with an absorption line measurement in nearly the same direction allows us to place an upper limit of 0.01 cm?3 on the electron density of the hot gas in this direction. We have placed 90% confidence upper limits of less than or equal to 10,000 photons cm?2 sr?1 s?1 on the O VI emission in 16 of our 426 observations.  相似文献

The hypothesis on the genetic connection of near-parabolic comets with Jupiter, Saturn, and the transPlutonian region (5–3000 AU) proposed by E.M. Drobyshevskii is considered. It has been shown that, on average, 5.6 comets per an area of 106 AU2 passed through the transPlutonian region during the whole history of observations. Six-hundred nineteen comets crossed the ecliptic at heliocentric distances ranging from 0 to 2 AU. As has been shown, from the total number of 945 near-parabolic comets, eight comets closely approached Jupiter and five closely approached Saturn. The Kreutz comets, 1277 objects, did not approach Jupiter closer than 3 AU. Their minimal distance to Saturn was 5.5 AU. The minimal distance of the Kreutz comets from the edge of the transPlutonian region was 28.8 AU. The analysis led to the conclusion that the concept on the origin of the near-parabolic comets suggested by Drobyshevskii is groundless.  相似文献

The position and shape of the Gegenschein’s maximum brightness provide information on the structure of the interplanetary dust cloud. We show that the asteroidal dust bands, extended near the anti-solar point, play an important role in determining both the position of the maximum brightness and the shape of the Gegenschein. After removing the asteroidal dust bands from an observation of the Gegenschein on November 2, 1997, it was found that the maximum brightness point shifted −0.4° in ecliptic latitude, i.e., to the south of the ecliptic plane, at an ecliptic longitude of 180°, in contrast to a latitude value of +0.1° when the dust bands were included. Furthermore, the part of the Gegenschein to the south of the ecliptic plane was brighter than the northern part at the time of observation. Referring to the cloud model of T. Kelsall et al. (1998, Astrophy. J. 508, 44-73), it can be estimated that the ascending node of the symmetry plane of the dust cloud is 57°−3°+7° when its inclination is 2.03° ? 0.50°.  相似文献

Speckle interferometry of 532 Herculina performed on January 17 and 18, 1982, yields triaxial ellipsoid dimensions of (263 ± 14) × (218 ± 12) × (215 ± 12) km, and a north pole for the asteroid within 7° of RA = 7b47m and DEC = ?39° (ecliptic coordinates γ = 132° β = ?59°). In addition, a “spot” some 75% brighter than the rest of the asteroid is inferred from both speckle observations and Herculina's lightcurve history. This bright complex, centered at asterocentric latitude ?35°, longitude 145–165°, extends over a diameter of 55° (115 km) of the asteroid's surface. No evidence for a satellite is found from the speckle observations, which leads to an upper limit of 50 km for the diameter of any satellite with an albedo the same as or higher than Herculina.  相似文献

We present infrared imaging and photometry of the bright, giant comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp). The comet was observed in an extended infrared and optical observing campaign in 1996–1997. The infrared morphology of the comet was observed to change from the 6 to 8 jet “porcupine” structure in 1996 to the “pinwheel” structure seen in 1997; this has implications for the position of the rotational angular momentum vector. Long term light curves taken at 11.3 μm indicate a dust production rate that varies with heliocentric distance as ∶ r−1.4. Short term light curves taken at perihelion indicate a rotational periodicity of 11.3 hours and a projected dust outflow speed of ∶ 0.4 km s−1. The spectral energy distribution of the dust on October 31, 1996 is well modeled by a mixture of 70% silicaceous and 30% carbonaceous non-porous grains, with a small particle dominated size distribution like that seen for comet P/Halley (McDonnell et al., 1991), an overall dust production rate of 2 × 105 kg s−1, a dust-to-gas ratio of ∶5, and an albedo of 39%. This paper presents the results of polarization observations of asteroid 554 Peraga obtained with the UBVRI polarimeter using the 1.25 m telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory down to phase angles of 3.1°–16.6° from October to November 2006. The asteroid’s polarization phase curve is shown to have a negative branch with the parameters P min = −1.7% and αmin = 8.4°, which is typical of C-type asteroids. However, these data contradict the results of Zellner and Gradie (1976) obtained in March 1975 that the reflected light from the asteroid’s surface is positively polarized, ≈1% at phase angles of 8°–10°. Since the asteroid’s ecliptic longitudes differ by 160°-145° for the two observation periods, we discuss the possibility that the two sets of observations refer to the asteroid’s two hemispheres with different polarimetric properties.  相似文献

We measured the extragalactic 0.7 keV X-ray background by observing the X-ray shadow of a neutral gas cloud in the Magellanic Bridge region. Two ROSAT PSPC observations of total 104 ks were complemented by a detailed H I mapping of the cloud with both the Parkes 64 m telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. From the detected anti-correlation between the observed background intensity and the H I column density of the cloud, we derived the unabsorbed extragalactic background intensity as ∼ 28 keV s−1 cm−2 keV−1 sr−1 at ∼ 0.7 keV. The 95% confidence lower limit 18 keV s−1 cm−2 keV−1 sr−1 is greater than the expected point-like source contribution ? 14 keV s−1 cm−2 keV−1 sr−1, constrained by the mean source spectrum together with the total background intensity in the 1-2 keV band. A significant fraction of the 0.7 keV background likely arises in a diffuse hot intergalactic medium of a few million degrees, as has been predicted in hydrodynamic simulations of cosmological structure formation.Richard McCray  相似文献

An analysis, with a representative (canonical) example of solar-flare-generated equatorial disturbances, is presented for the temporal and spatial changes in the solar wind plasma and magnetic field environment between the Sun and one astronomical unit (AU). Our objective is to search for first order global consequences rather than to make a parametric study. The analysis - an extension of earlier planar studies - considers all three plasma velocity and magnetic field components (V r, Vφ, V0, and B r, B0, Bφ) in any convenient heliospheric plane of symmetry such as the ecliptic plane, the solar equatorial plane, or the heliospheric equatorial plane chosen for its ability (in a tilted coordinate system) to order northern and southern hemispheric magnetic topology and latitudinal solar wind flows. Latitudinal velocity and magnetic field gradients in and near the plane of symmetry are considered to provide higher-order corrections of a specialized nature and, accordingly, are neglected, as is dissipation, except at shock waves. The representative disturbance is examined for the canonical case in which one describes the temporal and spatial changes in a homogeneous solar wind caused by a solar-flare-generated shock wave. The ‘canonical’ solar flare is assumed to produce a shock wave that has a velocity of 1000 km s#X2212;1 at 0.08 AU. We have examined all plasma and field parameters at three radial locations: central meridian and 33° W and 90° W of the flare's central meridian. A higher shock velocity (3000 km s#X2212;1) was also used to demonstrate the model's ability to simulate a strongly-kinked interplanetary field. Among the global (first-order) results are the following: (i) incorporation of a small meridional magnetic field in the ambient magnetic spiral field has negligible effect on the results; (ii) the magnetic field demonstrates strong kinking within the interplanetary shocked flow, even reversed polarity that - coupled with low temperature and low density - suggests a viable explanation for observed ‘magnetic clouds’ with accompanying double-streaming of electrons at directions ~ 90° to the heliocentric radius.  相似文献

High resolution (λ/δλ ∼ 20,000) spectra of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) in the 2–5 μm region were obtained during UT 2–5 March 1997 using CSHELL at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea. The heliocentric and geocentric distances of the comet were ∼1.1 AU and ∼1.5 AU,respectively. We detected emission lines of the gas-phase molecules H2O, 4, C2H6, C2H2, HCN, and CO and derived absolute production rates and relative abundances for all species. We also used the 2-dimensional nature of the CSHELL data to investigate the spatial distribution of the molecules and find evidence that CO was derived at least partly from an extended source in the coma. In the planet X model periodic comet showers are associated with passages of the planet's perihelion and aphelion points through a primordial disk of comets believed to lie beyond the orbit of Neptune. A strong feature of this model is that the required orbital elements and mass of planet X are consistent with independently predicted values based on the residuals in the motions of Uranus and Neptune. Here we present a more extensive analysis of the model taking into account the fact that only those comets scattered directly into the zones of influence of Saturn and Jupiter can contribute to a shower whose duration is consistent with observation (≲ 15 myr). These requirements impose a minimum planetary inclination of ≈25°, which in turn restricts the semimajor axis to be ≲100 AU. A fraction of the comets scattered directly into the zones of influence of Uranus and Neptune will evolve on time scales of ∼108 years into the steady state flux of short-period comets. We find that the absolute numbers of shower and steady state are comparable and compatible with the known terrestrial cratering rate, assuming the existence of long-lived extinct comet cores. Canonical planet X model parameters, deduced in part from the scattering dynamics analysis, are: semimajor axis ≈80 AU, eccentricity ≈0.3, inclination ≈45°, and mass ≈5m. An analysis is given which suggests that planet X, in its present orbit, can create the requisite density gradient of comets near perihelion and aphelion during the lifetime of the Solar System. The required inclination of planet X's orbit (≳25°) may explain the failure of previous surveys to discover the planet as its present latitude is not likely to be near the ecliptic. It it exists, the best immediate hope of finding planet X is the ongoing IRAS search in the 100-μm band and the full sky optical survey by Shoemaker and Shoemaker. Independent of the question of periodic comet showers, the existence of planet X and the comet disk can readily explain the origin of the steady state flux of short-period comets over a wide range of parameters.  相似文献

New observations of the out-of-the ecliptic trajectories of type III solar radio bursts have been obtained from simultaneous direction finding measurements on two independent satellite experiments, IMP-6 with spin plane in the ecliptic, and RAE-2 with spin plane normal to the ecliptic. Burst exciter trajectories were observed which originated at the active region and then crossed the ecliptic plane at about 0.8 AU. We find a considerable large scale north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field followed by the exciters. The apparent north-south and east-west angular source sizes observed by the two spacecraft are approximately equal, and range from 25° at 600 kHz to 110° at 80 kHz.  相似文献

Magnetic fields likely play a key role in the dynamics and evolution of protoplanetary disks. They have the potential to efficiently transport angular momentum by MHD turbulence or via the magnetocentrifugal acceleration of outflows from the disk surface. Magnetically-driven mixing has implications for disk chemistry and evolution of the grain population, and the effective viscous response of the disk determines whether planets migrate inwards or outwards. However, the weak ionisation of protoplanetary disks means that magnetic fields may not be able to effectively couple to the matter. I examine the magnetic diffusivity in a minimum solar nebula model and present calculations of the ionisation equilibrium and magnetic diffusivity as a function of height from the disk midplane at radii of 1 and 5 AU. Dust grains tend to suppress magnetic coupling by soaking up electrons and ions from the gas phase and reducing the conductivity of the gas by many orders of magnitude. However, once grains have grown to a few microns in size their effect starts to wane and magnetic fields can begin to couple to the gas even at the disk midplane. Because ions are generally decoupled from the magnetic field by neutral collisions while electrons are not, the Hall effect tends to dominate the diffusion of the magnetic field when it is able to partially couple to the gas, except at the disk surfaces where the low density of neutrals permits the ions to remain attached to the field lines. For a standard population of 0.1 μm grains the active surface layers have a combined column Σactive≈2 g cm−2 at 1 AU; by the time grains have aggregated to 3 μm, Σactive≈80 g cm−2. Ionisation in the active layers is dominated by stellar X-rays. In the absence of grains, X-rays maintain magnetic coupling to 10% of the disk material at 1 AU (i.e. Σactive≈150 g cm−2). At 5 AU the Σactive≈Σtotal once grains have aggregated to 1 μm in size.  相似文献
