Juvenile coho salmon, Onchorynchus kisutch, were exposed to 95mTc in both saltwater and freshwater to study the biokinetic behavior of this element in an anadromous fish. In freshwater, equilibrium whole-body concentration factors (CF5) ranged from 28 to 32 in two separate experiments, in sharp contrast to an equilibriumCF of < 5 in saltwater. While the uptake kinetics were unimodal in saltwater, in freshwater, biomodal uptake kinetics were observed.Technetium-95m retention was biphasic in freshwater depuration experiments, an initial rapid loss of 21% to 26% of the steady-state activity with an elimination half-life of 3 to 5 days was followed by a slower loss rate, with a whole-body elimination half-life ranging from 23 to 33 days. In saltwater, retention was monophasic with an elimination half-life of 5–16 days. Dramatic decreases in 95mTc body burdens when freshwater-labeled fish are transferred to Tc-labeled saltwater indicate that the changes in physiology accompanying saltwater acclimation lead to the loss of 95mTc.  相似文献

The crab Carcinus maenas (L.) and the barnacle Elminius modestus Darwin were exposed to a range of dissolved concentrations of Zn, Cu and Cd for 21 days in artificial seawater. Accumulation of Zn and Cu by crabs has been interpreted in terms of the presence of a regulation mechanism to maintain constant body concentrations (83·2 ± 19·4 μg Zn g?1 dry wt.; 39·8 ± 9·8 μg Cu g?1 dry wt.) under varying external dissolved metal levels, until a threshold dissolved metal concentration (c. 400 μg Zn l?1; c. 170 μg Cu l?1) beyond which net accumulation of metal begins. Cadium appears to be accumulated by C. maenas at all exposures with no evidence for regulation of body cadmium concentrations. Exposure of E. modestus to Zn, Cu or Cd caused net accumulation of the respective metal in the bodies of the barnacles, with no evidence for regulation of body metal concentrations.  相似文献

The addition of stock copper and zinc nitrate solutions to filtered seawater (pH 7·91) resulted in a large pH shift which was more pronounced with copper. The pH shift was minimized by increasing the buffering capacity of seawater using 10 mm Tris-Tes pH 7·91. Subsequent experimentation was carried out in both unbuffered and buffered seawater. In unbuffered seawater, both copper and zinc had a pronounced inhibitory effect on Mytilus edulis sperm respiration with 50% inhibition occurring at 0.65 mm (41·3 ppm) copper and 1.0 mm (65·4 ppm) zinc. Egg respiration was also inhibited by copper with 50% inhibition occurring at 0.9 mm (57·2 ppm) whereas zinc inhibited egg respiration by only 30% at 1·5 mM (98·1 ppm).In buffered seawater, both copper and zinc produced an inhibitory effect on sperm respiration. However, with copper the inhibition was much reduced whereas zinc had tthe same inhibitory effect as in unbuffered seawater. In contrast to unbuffered seawater, egg respiration was stimulated by copper but zinc produced a comparable respiratory inhibition. The uptake of both copper and zinc in sperm and egg in buffered seawater increased with increasing metal concentration. Metal ion uptake, when expressed as ng ions μl cell volume?1, was approximately 3-fold greater in the sperm than in the eggs and in both cases zinc uptake exceeded copper uptake. At a seawater pH of < 7·5, in the absence of copper or zinc, the respiration of both egg and sperm was inhibited. The maximum levels of inhibition at pH 5·4 were 15% and 30% for sperm and egg, respectively. The differing actions of copper on egg respiration in buffered and unbuffered seawater appear to be due to enhanced copper uptake in unbuffered seawater.  相似文献

An in situ chamber of volume 3881 and bottom area 0·64 m2 was used to determine the flux of oxygen and inorganic nutrients across an estuarine sediment-water interface over a 65-day period. Over the first 7 days, oxygen uptake was 378 mg m?2 day?1 and the rates of ammonium and phosphate release were 2·22 and 0·34 mg at. m?2 day?1, respectively. The water became anoxic in 14 days. The rates of flux in a similar chamber containing only detritus recently settled from the water column were 371 mg m?2 day?1 (oxygen), 1·66 mg at. m?2 day?1 (ammonium) and 0 12 mg at. m?2 day?1 (phosphate), demonstrating that detritus contributes substantially to exchange across the sediment-water interface. The evolution of the two chambers was similar over the latter part of the experimental period. A third chamber containing only water exhibited very minor changes. The role of detritus in nutrient recycling at the sediment-water interface is discussed in relation to the productivity of shallow water bodies such as the estuary in which the experiment was conducted, which itself undergoes periodic deoxygenation during prolonged stratification. The measured flux of nitrogen across the interface was found to represent approximately 31% of the mean daily phytoplankton requirement.  相似文献

Resident populations of Mytilus edulis from Tomales and San Francisco Bay, California, were measured for scope of growth, a physiological integration of the energy consumed by individual animals (feeding rate and assimilation efficiency) less the energy lost in metabolic processes (oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion). Scope for growth of mussels was significantly correlated (p≤ 0·05) with feeding rates. There was a significant decline in the scope for growth between the Golden Gate, at the bay's entrance and RedwoodCity in south San Francisco Bay. The scope for growth in resident M. edulis was significantly negatively correlated (p≤ 0·05) with increased environmental concentrations (from transplanted M. californianus body burden data) of the following trace elements and higher molecular weight chlorinated organic compounds: Cr, Cu, Hg (p ≤ 0·01) and Ag, Al, Zn, total chlordanes, and dieldrin. Scope for growth was significantly correlated (p ≤0·05) with body condition index (dry body weight1shell length).  相似文献

The accumulation and retention of 241Am by the pelagic tunicate Oikopleura dioica were examined using laboratory cultures and radiotracer methodology. Animals (i.e., trunks and tails) and discarded empty houses accumulated Am from seawater, giving volume/volume concentration factors of 59±8 and 10±1, respectively. The half-time for retention of Am in empty labelled houses transferred to non-contaminated seawater was 29 h; the retention half-time of Am in houses discarded by larvaceans feeding on Am-labelled diatoms was 219 h; the half-time of Am in fecal pellets produced by animals feeding on a monospecific diet of diatoms was 134 h, and 247 h for fecal pellets from animals fed a mixed diet. Approximately 30% of filtered cells remained in houses after the houses were discarded. Sinking rates of discarded houses and fecal pellets were found to vary with temperature and size, ranging from 26–157 m day?1 (house) and from 25–166 m day?1 (fecal pellets). The ubiquity and abundance of appendicularians, together with their prodigious production of houses (e.g., 10±2 houses day?1 at 17°C for each experimental animal) point to their potential significance in the vertical transport of Am, and probably other reactive metals, to intermediate depths in the ocean.  相似文献

Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, embryos were exposed to copper and silver salts, alone and in combination, through the completion of embryogenesis and metal effects upon normal embryonic development were monitored. Copper concentrations throughout the test period ranged from 0·0 to 12·0 μg litre?1 while silver concentrations were between 0·0 and 18·0 μg litre?1.Administered individually, silver and copper yielded decreasing per cent normal embryonic development with increasing metal concentration. However, both metals exhibited ‘plateaus’ wherein per cent normal embryonic development did not decrease with increasing metal concentration until a particular concentration was attained. A rapid decrease in per cent normal embryonic development occurred with increasing metal concentrations greater than 6·0 μg litre?1 copper and 11·0 μg litre?1 silver. The dose-response patterns of copper and silver appear to be similar with copper exhibiting somewhat greater toxicity. At a copper concentration of 10 μg litre?1 only 50% of the embryos could be considered normally developed, whereas silver concentrations between 16·0 and 18·0 μg litre?1 yielded 50% normal embryonic development.Response surface methodology indicated that copper and silver interacted additively, with embryonic development affected to a much greater degree by copper than by silver. Optimum development of Crassostrea gigas embryos was greatly influenced by copper concentrations and occurred at all silver concentrations wherein the corresponding copper concentrations were 6·0 μg litre?1 or less. Above 6·0 μg litre?1 copper, per cent normal embryonic development was significantly reduced, even at the lowest tested silver concentrations.Abnormal embryos exhibited retarded shell growth, reduced size and extremely erratic swimming behaviour. These sublethal effects probably have a biochemical origin and would limit the organism's capacity to feed properly, escape predation and develop normally, thereby reducing the chances of successful metamorphosis and recruitment into the adult population.  相似文献

Macoma inquinata, a detritus feeding clam, was exposed for 60 days to coarse-grained, and Abarenicola pacifica, a burrowing polychaete, to fine-grained, sediment. Each sediment contained 14-C-labelled phenanthrene, chrysene or benzo(a)pyrene. Over 70% of the chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene, but only 8% of the phenanthrene, remained in the coarse sediment during the exposure. Essentially all of the chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene and 70% of the phenanthrene remained in the fine sediment. The concentrations of chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene in the clams rose steadily, reaching levels 11·6 and 5·2 times as high as those in the sediment. The tissue phenanthrene concentration rose for 3 days, then fell to one-eighth of the initial concentration. The concentrations of each of the aromatic hydrocarbons in Abarenicola tissue increased for 2 weeks to four to six times the sediment levels. The tissue concentration of chrysene remained constant thereafter, but the levels of phenanthrene and benzo(a)pyrene fell to three-quarters of their peak values. No intermediate degradation products of any of the hydrocarbons were identified in extracts of sediment from either exposure system, or in solvent extracts of tissue or of tissue digestates.Significant 14C-activity, associated with non-solvent extractable compounds, remained in tissue digestates of individuals of both species exposed to phenanthrene.  相似文献

The nitrogen relations of Enteromorpha spp. growing on intertidal mud flats have been examined over a twelve-month period. Nitrogen assimilation rates using 15N have been used to calculate the production of the alga and were between 0·046 and 0·217 mg NH4+N (g dry wt alga)?1 h?1 A considerable quantity of the alga was buried beneath the sediment over the growth season and was calculated to be equivalent to an input of up to 9·52 g N m?2 per month and 32 g N m?2 over one complete growth season. Based on carbon, this latter value represented an input of approximately 320 g C m?2 annually. Low rates of nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) were found to be associated with the Enteromorpha. The organisms responsible for the nitrogenase activity were probably heterotrophic bacteria but they did not contribute significant quantities of nitrogen to the alga.  相似文献

Growth, survivorship, reproduction and productivity of a Pectinaria (Lagis) koreni population was studied in Colwyn Bay, from July 1975 to August 1976. The cephalic disc diameter of the worms was chosen as an index of size, after the relations between linear and weight measurements of the body were established. Settlement of Pectinaria was estimated to have occured at the beginning of June, and the whole population had disappeared by April. Growth was initially fast but it ceased completely during the winter, probably due to low temperatures and disturbance by storms. Bundles of gametes first appeared in the coelomic fluid in November, but maturation was not completed before May. Mature ova, 60–65 μ in diameter, were released individually: sperms, a few microns in diameter, were released in bundles. The highest standing crop, 47·5 g m?2 was present in September and the total production of the cohort during its lifetime was 138·8 g m?2. The ratio between total production and mean biomass was given by P/B: 7·3.  相似文献

This study compared the very different responses of the polychaete Neanthes arenaceodentata to chronic exposure of hexavalent (Cr VI) and trivalent (Cr III) chromium. The polychaetes were exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cr VI and Cr III for periods of 440 days (three generations) and 293 days (two generations), respectively. In the Cr VI test, polychaete reproduction ceased at 100 μg litre?1, and the number of young produced was reduced at the 12·5 to 50 μg litre?1 levels and above. However, polychaetes that lived in Cr III during the test showed no adverse effects in 50400 μg litre?1.  相似文献

Surveys of the distribution, abundance and size of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi were carried out in Narragansett Bay, R.I. over a 5-year period, 1975–1979. Yearly variations were observed in time of initiation of the ctenophore increase and maximum abundance. Biomass maxima ranged from 0·2 to 3 g dry weight m?3 at Station 2 in lower Narragansett Bay while maximum abundance varied from 20 to 100 animals m?3. Ctenophores less than 1 cm in length generally composed up to 50% of the biomass and 95% of the numerical abundance during the peak of the M. leidyi pulse. During the 1978 maxima and the declining stages of the pulse each year, 100% of the population was composed of small animals. M. leidyi populations increased earlier, reached greater maximum abundances, and were more highly dominated by small animals in the upper bay than toward the mouth of the bay. The averageclearance rate of M. leidyi larvae feeding on A. tonsa at 22°C was 0·36 l mg?1 dry weight day?1, with apparent selection for nauplii relative to copepodites. Predation and excretion rates applied to ctenophore biomass estimated for Narragansett Bay indicated that M. leidyi excretion is minor but predation removed a bay-wide mean of 20% of the zooplankton standing stock daily during August of 1975 and 1976. Variation in M. leidyi predation at Station 2 was inversely related to mean zooplankton biomass during August and September, which increased 4-fold during the 5-year period.  相似文献

Oxy-anionic species of V, As, Se, Mo, Sb, Te and W were measured in solution and suspension in samples obtained during several cruises in the Dutch Wadden Sea, the offshore region of the Southern Bight (North Sea) and in the estuaries of the Rhine and Scheldt. Dissolved concentrations at salinities above 34·5 × 10?3 ( = 34·5%. S) agreed generally well with published open ocean values. It is suggested that Se speciation differs from the open ocean. In the Wadden Sea, concentrations of V, Se, Mo and Sb were linearly related to salinity (10–35 × 10?3). The good agreement between measured and extrapolated values at a salinity of 0·5 × 10?3 suggests conservative behaviour in the Rhine estuary (with residence time of freshwater in the order of a few days).Dissolved concentration vs. salinity plots in the Scheldt estuary (residence time 2–3 months) showed pronounced minima and maxima. These occurred in the low or medium salinity range for V, As and Sb. Linear behaviour was observed for Se and Mo (in some cases, relatively large differences between cruises were detected). Deviations from linearity in the plots are interpreted in terms of thermodynamic equilibrium conditions involving species with different solubilities (V), local input from land (As, Se, Sb, Te) and removal from solution (As), probably through coprecipitation with Fe(OH)3.In the offshore samples, the contributions of particulate forms to the total element concentrations were small (<15%). At higher SPM concentrations (about 30 mg dm?3), this percentage remained small for Se, Mo and Sb (<15%); it was substantial for V and As (25–50%).  相似文献

After multiple autotomy in the fiddler crab, Uca pugilator, cadmium retards limb regeneration and ecdysis. To study the effects of pre-exposure to lower levels of cadmium, groups were pre-exposed to 0·1, 0·5 or 1·0 mg liter?1 for a week prior to autotomy. Crabs were then placed in 1·0 mg liter?1 for regeneration. Pre-exposed groups were compared with groups of crabs which had not been pre-exposed to Cd. It was found that males pre-exposed to 0·5 mg liter?1 regenerated more rapidly in 1·0 mg liter?1 than those not pre-exposed. This phenomenon was not observed in females, in which none of the three pre-exposure concentrations were able to accelerate regeneration in 1·0 mg liter?1 relative to those not pre-exposed. In the pre-exposed males in which regeneration was accelerated and was comparable to control levels, no accompanying decrease of time until molting was observed. Therefore, the protective effect of pre-exposure would seem to be on the regeneration processes themselves and is not dependent on the neuroendocrine system which controls the molt cycle.  相似文献

Short-term (6 h) behavioural responses and mortality of Scrobicularia exposed to low concentrations of copper in sea water (31%, S) have been investigated.Scrobicularia can detect copper at a concentration of 0·01 ppm. The initial response is valve closure resulting in a rapid drop in heart rate. In concentrations of 0·05, 0·01 and, to a lesser extent, 0·1 ppm copper added to sea water, the clams begin to interact with the polluted water after 2–3 h. In 0·5 ppm, the valves remain closed and the heart rate is maintained at a low level over the 6-h exposure period.Mortality increases with time in 0·5 ppm copper concentration, reaching 50% in 5–7 days. In 0·05 and 0·01 ppm, no mortality was recorded over this period. There is an increase in mantle cavity water calcium concentration after 6 h in 0·5 ppm, in contrast to 0·1, 0·05 and 0·01 ppm. Aspects of anaerobiosis, accumulation of heavy metals and survival are discussed in relation to the behaviour of Scrobicularia exposed to various copper concentrations.  相似文献

The ocypodid crab, Dotilla myctiroides, was studied on the south-west coast of peninsular Malaysia. The mean numbers and biomass over a year along a transect from high to low water ranged from 37·5 to 579 crabs m?2 and from 2·22 to 50·79 g m?2 (wet weight) respectively. Berried females were found in all months of the year but two peaks of activity were apparent, from November to February and May to July. It is suggested that this may be related to changes in food abundance associated with the effects of monsoon winds on sea currents. Laboratory growth studies indicated that maximum life span was approximately 13 months (from first crab stage) for males and 10 months for females. Growth rate decreased with increasing size of crab. Egg number increased with size of female.  相似文献

Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas) will tolerate temperatures from 0°C to c. 30°C but dies in < 1 h at 35°C. Both small and large animals survive > 96 h in water (aerated) between 1 and 60%(.) salinity. In distilled water and 100%(.) brine death occurred after 8–24 h. In fully saline water, pH reduction to c. 3·3 is tolerated. Highly alkaline (pH 11–13) conditions in low salinity media are rapidly fatal. Ammonium concentrations (in fully saline water) some five orders of magnitude higher than normal for seawater are tolerated, reflecting the enhanced ammonium concentration encountered in rotting weed beds. Cl ion concentration equivalent to that in normal seawater will not support O. gammarellus in the absence of Na+ ions. High NO3 concentrations (> 100 mg NO3 litre−1) are fatal in < 24 h. A large range of NaCl concentrations is tolerated (one to two orders of magnitude dilution) by immersed animals. Animals will live longer in air, however, when fed low Na+ food than when immersed in seawater diluted to an equivalent ion strength. Ca2+ and K+ ions cannot substitute for Na+. Orchestia gammarellus will, however, tolerate wide variations in the ratio of Na+:K+ ions (i.e to a shift from 30:1 to 0·3.1) in hypo-osmotic media. At 10°C it will survive c. 5 h of anoxia. It will penetrate into strongly reducing conditions (− 318 mV) even with access to better oxygenated conditions. In nature, behavioural avoidance probably ensures that O. gammarellus does not encounter many of these parameters at acutely limiting values. That this species is so tolerant, however, bears on the evolutionary adaptability of talitrid amphipods to non-marine conditions. Desiccation sensitivity and Na+ ion dependency are the species' most important barriers to life on land.  相似文献

The concentration of Ni in C. edule ranges from 17·8 μg/g to 53·82 μg/g with the highest concentration in the gills and mantle and the lowest in the foot and adductor muscles. The concentration does not change with either size or season. There is no significant increase in mortality even in the highest Ni concentration (100 μg/litre), nor is body condition correlated with experimental Ni concentrations. The rate of uptake of Ni (y) is described by the equation:
y=?16·903+11·674x1+0·437x2
where x1 = Ni concentration (μg/litre) and x2 = time (h).The respiration rates did not significantly change up to the highest Ni concentration used (1000 μg/litre).It is postulated that the main pathway for Ni uptake is through the gills, possibly through mucus sheet or transmembrane absorption, with a secondary uptake route via the viscera.C. edule may therefore be a suitable indicator species for Ni.  相似文献

The stability constants of the ion pairs NaSO4?, KSO4?, MgSO4?, CaSO4, MgCl+ and CaCl+ were determined at 25°C and 0.7 M formal ionic strength, by measuring the solubility of gypsum (CaSO4 · 2H2O) in different media. The media used contained one or two of the following electrolytes: NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, NaClO4, Mg(ClO4)2, Na2SO4. Values for the stability constants are 1.22, 1.84, 12.3, 30.6, 0.48 and 1.20 M?1, respectively, and the solubility product for gypsum is 2.87 · 10?4M2. The distribution of the main constituents of seawater was calculated using these results and the values of the carbonate and bicarbonate constants given by Dyrssen and Hansson (1972–1973). The solubility of gypsum in seawater as calculated and determined experimentally was 21.43 mM and 21.10 mM, respectively.  相似文献
