Summary. Hubble's (1936, p. 125) view that the Local Group (LG) is “a typical, small group of nebulae which is isolated in the general field” is confirmed by modern data. The total number of certain and probable Group members presently stands at 35. The half-mass radius of the Local Group is found to be kpc. The zero-velocity surface, which separates the Local Group from the field that is expanding with the Hubble flow, has a radius Mpc. The total mass of the LG is . Most of this mass appears to be concentrated in the Andromeda and Milky Way subgroups of the LG. The total luminosity of the Local Group is found to be :. This yields a mass-to-light ratio (in solar units) of . The solar motion with respect to the LG is \,km s, directed towards an apex at , and . The velocity dispersion within the LG is km s. The galaxies NGC 3109, Antlia, Sextans A and Sextans B appear to form a distinct grouping with kpc relative to the LG, that is located beyond the LG zero-velocity surface at a distance of 1.7 Mpc from the Local Group centroid. The luminosity distribution of the LG has a slope . This value is significantly less negative than that which is found in rich clusters of galaxies. The luminosity distribution of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies is steeper than that for dwarf irregulars. Furthermore the dSph galaxies are strongly concentrated within the Andromeda and Milky Way subclusters of the Local Group, whereas the majority of dIr galaxies appear to be free-floating members of the LG as a whole. With the possible exception of Leo I and Leo A, most LG members appear to have started forming stars simultaneously Gyr ago. Many of the galaxies, for which evolutionary data are available, appear to have shrunk with time. This result is unexpected because Hubble Space Telescope observations appear to show galaxies at to be smaller than they are at . In the Large Magellanic Cloud the rate of cluster formation was low for a period that extended from Gyr to Gyr ago. The rate of cluster formation may have increased more rapidly 3–5 Gyr ago, than did the rate of star formation. The reason for the sudden burst of cluster formation in the LMC Gyr ago remains obscure. None of the dwarf galaxies in the LG appears to have experienced a starburst strong enough to have produced a “boojum”. Received 14 April 1999  相似文献

Stellar abundance pattern of n-capture elements such as barium is used as a powerful tool to infer how the star formation proceeded in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. It is found that the abundance correlation of barium with iron in stars belonging to dSph galaxies orbiting the Milky Way, i.e., Draco, Sextans, and Ursa Minor have a feature similar to that in Galactic metal-poor stars. The common feature of these two correlations can be realized by our in homogeneous chemical evolution model based on the supernova-driven star formation scenario if dSph stars formed from gas with a velocity dispersion of ∼ 26 km s-1. This velocity dispersion together with the stellar luminosities strongly suggest that dark matter dominated dSph galaxies. The tidal force of the Milky Way links this velocity dispersion with the currently observed value ≲ 10 km s-1 by stripping the dark matter in dSph galaxies. As a result, the total mass of each dSph galaxy is found to have been originally ∼ 25 times larger than at present. In this model, supernovae immediately after the end of the star formation can expel the remaining gas over the gravitational potential of the dSph galaxy. The hierarchical structure of the clusters of galaxies A 999, A 1016, and A 1142, which are part of one supercluster, is investigated. The HTree method is used to determine that A 999 and A 1016 are a single, dynamically bound system consisting of two “cores” and a common field of galaxies. The composition of the “cores” includes almost all the E and S0 galaxies, the luminosity function of which is very nearly Gaussian. It is also established that the cluster A 1142 has a nonuniform structure, both in density distribution and in radial velocity distribution. The location of the maxima in density and in the radial velocity distribution correlates with the galaxies that are sources of radio and x-ray emission. We use an N -body/hydrodynamic simulation to forecast the future encounter between the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxies, given present observational constraints on their relative distance, relative velocity, and masses. Allowing for a comparable amount of diffuse mass to fill the volume of the Local Group, we find that the two galaxies are likely to collide in a few billion years – within the Sun's lifetime. During the interaction, there is a chance that the Sun will be pulled away from its present orbital radius and reside in an extended tidal tail. The likelihood for this outcome increases as the merger progresses, and there is a remote possibility that our Sun will be more tightly bound to Andromeda than to the Milky Way before the final merger. Eventually, after the merger has completed, the Sun is most likely to be scattered to the outer halo and reside at much larger radii (>30 kpc). The density profiles of the stars, gas and dark matter in the merger product resemble those of elliptical galaxies. Our Local Group model therefore provides a prototype progenitor of late-forming elliptical galaxies.  相似文献

We present results of an investigation of clustering evolution of field galaxies between a redshift of z ∼ 1 and the present epoch. The current analysis relies on a sample of ∼ 14000 galaxies in two fields of the COMBO 17 survey. The redshift distribution extends to z ∼ 1. The amplitude of the three-dimensional correlation function can be estimated by means of the projected correlation function w(r p ). The validity of the deprojection was tested on the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). In a flat cosmology with non-zero cosmological constant for bright galaxies (M B ≤-18) the clustering growth is proportional to (1+z) -2. However, the measured clustering evolution clearly depends on Hubble type. While locally the clustering strength of early type galaxies is equal to that of the bright galaxies, at high redshifts they are much stronger clustered, and thus the clustering has to evolve much more slowly. On the basis of literature data, and assuming that the Milky Way satisfies the Tully-Fisher relationship, the main photometric and kinematic characteristics of the Galaxy are summarized. It is shown that, based on the aggregate of the large-scale properties, the Milky Way is a normal L* galaxy. The contribution of dark matter within the limits of the optical disk of the Milky Way evidently does not exceed 30%. Five spiral galaxies that are similar to the Milky Way in their characteristics are selected from among relatively nearby objects. The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L 20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L 20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters.  相似文献

The general relativistic model of Cooperstock and Tieu, which attempts to fit rotation curves of spiral galaxies without invoking dark matter, is tested empirically using observations of the Milky Way. In particular, predictions for the mass density in the solar neighbourhood and the vertical density distribution at the position of the Sun are compared with observations. It is shown that the model of Cooperstock and Tieu, which was so constructed that it gives an excellent fit of the observed rotation curve, singularly fails to reproduce the observed local mass density and the vertical density profile of the Milky Way.  相似文献

This work derives the linearized equations of motion, the Lagrangian density, the Hamiltonian density, and the canonical angular momentum density for general perturbations [∝ exp (imφ) with m = 0, ± 1, ...] of a geometrically thin self-gravitating, homentropic fluid disk including the pressure. The theory is applied to “eccentric,” m = ± 1 perturbations of a geometrically thin Keplerian disk. We find m = 1 modes at low frequencies relative to the Keplerian frequency. Further, it is shown that these modes can have negative energy and negative angular momentum. The radial propagation of these low-frequency m = 1 modes can transport angular momentum away from the inner region of a disk and thus increase the rate of mass accretion. Depending on the radial boundary conditions there can be discrete low-frequency, negative-energy, m = 1 modes.  相似文献

We present a catalog of 520 most isolated nearby galaxies with angular velocities V LG < 3500 km/s, covering the entire sky. This population of “space orphans” makes up 4.8% among 10 900 galaxies with measured radial velocities. We describe the isolation criterion used to select our sample, called the “Local Orphan Galaxies”(LOG), and discuss their basic optical and HI properties. A half of the LOG catalog is occupied by the Sdm, Im and Ir morphological type galaxies without a bulge. The median ratio M gas/M star in the LOG galaxies exceeds 1. The distribution of the catalog galaxies on the sky looks uniform with some signatures of a weak clustering on the scale of about 0.5 Mpc. The LOG galaxies are located in the regions where the mean local density of matter is approximately 50 times lower than the mean global density. We indicate a number of LOG galaxies with distorted structures, which may be the consequence of interaction of isolated galaxies with massive dark objects.  相似文献

A sample of local galaxies for which far-infrared and ultraviolet fluxes are available is used to estimate the characteristic dust extinction in galaxies and to test whether standard dust properties are plausible. Assuming galaxies can be characterized by a single dust optical depth (certainly not valid for galaxies with a dominant starburst component), the infrared excess and ultraviolet colours of local galaxies are found to be consistent with normal Milky Way dust, with a mean value for   E ( B − V )  of 0.16. A significant fraction of the dust heating is caused by older, lower-mass stars, and this fraction increases towards earlier galaxy types.
Analysis of  ( F FIR/ F UV)  versus ultraviolet colour diagrams for starburst galaxies in terms of a simple screen dust model does not support a Calzetti (1997) rather than a Milky Way extinction law, though the absence of the expected strong 2200- Å feature in several galaxies with IUE spectra does show that more detailed radiative transfer models are needed – probably with nonspherical geometry.
A simple treatment in which the  100/60-μm  flux ratio is used to subtract the optically thick starburst contribution to the far-infrared radiation results in lower extinction estimates for the optically thin cirrus component, with a mean   E ( B − V )  of 0.10.
The ultraviolet luminosity density, corrected for dust extinction, is derived and a value for the local mean star formation rate inferred. This is consistent with previous estimates from ultraviolet surveys and from  Hα  surveys.  相似文献

Summary. This review is primarily directed to the question whether photometric solar analogues remain such when subjected to detailed spectroscopic analyses and interpreted with the help of internal stucture models. In other words, whether the physical parameters: mass, chemical composition, age (determining effective temperature and luminosity), chromospheric activity, equatorial rotation, lithium abundance, velocity fields etc., we derive from the spectral analysis of a photometric solar analogue, are really close to those of the Sun. We start from 109 photometric solar analogues extracted from different authors. The stars selected had to satisfy three conditions: i) their colour index must be contained in the interval: –0.69, ii) they must possess a trigonometric parallax, iii) they must have undergone a high resolution detailed spectroscopic analysis. First, this review presents photometric and spectrophotometric researches on solar analogues and recalls the pionneering work on these stars by the late Johannes Hardorp. After a brief discussion on low and high resolution spectroscopic researches, a comparison is made between effective temperatures as obtained, directly, from detailed spectral analyses and those obtained, indirectly, from different photometric relations. An interesting point in this review is the discussion on the tantalilizing value of the of the Sun, and the presentation of a new reliable value of this index. A short restatement of the kinematic properties of the sample of solar analogues is also made. And, finally, the observational diagram, obtained with 99 of the initially presented 109 analogues, is compared to a theoretical diagram. This latter has been constructed with a grid of internal structure models for which, (very important for this investigation), the Sun was used as gauge. In analysing the position, with respect to the Sun, of each star we hoped to find a certain number of stars tightly neighbouring the Sun in mass, chemical composition and state of evolution. The surprising result is that the stars occupy in this HR Diagram a rather extended region around the Sun, many of them seem more evolved and older than the Sun, and only 4 of the evolved stars seem younger. The age of some stars in the sample is also discussed in terms of chromospheric activity and Li-content. Our conclusion is much the same as that contained in previous papers we have written on the subject: in spite of a much larger number of stars, we have not been able to nominate a single star of the sample for a “perfect good solar twin”. Another aim in beginning, 25 years ago, this search for solar analogues, was to have ready a bunch of stars resembling the Sun and analysed spectroscopically in detail, in order that, when planets hunters of solar type stars, finally would have found such a specimen, we would have been able to immediately compare the physical parameters of this star to those of the Sun. We have been lucky enough: one of the good solar analogues we present herewith, is 51 Pegasi (HD 217014) which, according to the very recent observations by Mayor and Queloz (1995), has a planet orbiting around it. And what is more: two other stars possessing planets: 47 Ursae Majoris (HD 95128) and 70 Virginis (HD 117176), have just been discovered by Marcy and Butler (187 Meeting of the AAS, January 1996). One of them, 47 Ursae Majoris, is also included in the list of photometric solar analogues. The other star, 70 Virginis, has only been included after the “Planets News”, because the colour index of this star is slightly higher than the prescribted limit of the selection, (, instead, 0.69). It would have been a pity to leave the third ” planet star out of the competition.  相似文献

The peculiar velocity field for 907 galaxies with heliocentric radial velocities VH ≤ 3000 km/s is examined. The data are divided into three samples, organized according to the principles behind the method for determining the distance to the galaxies: the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), fluctuations in the surface brightness, and the infrared Tully-Fisher relation for spiral galaxies viewed edge-on. The latter sample includes 410 galaxies. For determining the distance to the galaxies in this sample, additional regressors were introduced into the Tully-Fisher relation, in particular the “color index” K-m21, which make it possible significantly to reduce the dispersion with respect to the regression curve. All three samples showed good agreement in the peculiar velocity distribution. Based on each of these samples, as well as on the combined sample, detailed maps of the field of peculiar velocities of the galaxies are constructed for VH ≤ 3000 km/s. An analysis shows that most of the observed features of this map can be explained by large-scale density variations in the galactic distribution. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 51, No. 3, pp. 409–422 (August 2008).  相似文献

We use a semi-analytic model of halo formation to study the dynamical history of giant field galaxies like the Milky Way. We find that in a concordance LCDM cosmology, most isolated disk galaxies have remained undisturbed for 8–10 Gyr, such that the age of the Milky Way's thin disk is unremarkable. Many systems also have older disk components which have been thickened by minor mergers, consistent with recent observations of nearby field galaxies. We do have a considerable problem, however, reproducing the morphological mix of nearby galaxies. In our fiducial model, most systems have disk-to-bulge mass ratios of order 1, and look like S0s rather than spirals. This result depends mainly on merger statistics, and is unchanged for most reasonable choices of our model parameters. We discuss two possible solutions to this morphology problem in LCDM. The X-ray properties of the haloes of disk galaxies formed in fully cosmological, hydro/gravity simulations are discussed. The results are found to be consistent with observational X-ray detections and upper limits. Disk galaxy haloes are predicted to be about an order of magnitude brighter at z ∼ 1 than at z=0. The Lyα and Hα surface brightness of an edge-on, Milky Way like model galaxy has been determined. The emission is found to be quite extended, with a scale height of about 600 pc, neglecting dust corrections. The spatial distributions of the most recently discovered ultra-faint dwarf satellites around the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy are compared to the previously reported discs-of-satellites (DoS) of their host galaxies. In our investigation, we pay special attention to the selection bias introduced due to the limited sky coverage of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the new Milky Way satellite galaxies follow closely the DoS defined by the more luminous dwarfs, thereby further emphasizing the statistical significance of this feature in the Galactic halo. We also note a deficit of satellite galaxies with Galactocentric distances larger than  100 kpc  that are away from the DoS of the Milky Way. In the case of Andromeda, we obtain similar results, naturally complementing our previous finding and strengthening the notion that the DoS are optical manifestations of a phase-space correlation of satellite galaxies.  相似文献

In this article we discuss the importance of high‐resolution absorption spectroscopy for our understanding of the distribution and physical nature of the gaseous circumgalactic medium (CGM) that surrounds the Milky Way. Observational and theoretical studies indicate a high complexity of the gas kinematics and an extreme multi‐phase nature of the CGM in low‐redshift galaxies. High‐precision absorption‐line measurements of the Milky Way's gas environment thus are essential to explore fundamental parameters of circumgalactic gas in the local Universe, such as mass, chemical composition, and spatial distribution. We shortly review important characteristics of the Milky Way's CGM and discuss recent results from our multi‐wavelength observations of the Magellanic Stream. Finally, we discuss the potential of studying the warm‐hot phase of the Milky Way's CGM by searching for extremely weak [Fe X] λ 6374.5 Å and [Fe XIV] λ 5302.9 Å absorption in optical QSO spectra. This paper argues that the Milky Way galaxy is probably the largest member of the Local Group. The evidence comes from estimates of the total mass of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) derived from the three-dimensional positions and radial velocities of its satellite galaxies, as well as the projected positions and radial velocities of its distant globular clusters and planetary nebulae. The available data set comprises 10 satellite galaxies, 17 distant globular clusters and nine halo planetary nebulae with radial velocities. We find that the halo of Andromeda has a mass of together with a scalelength of 90 kpc and a predominantly isotropic velocity distribution. For comparison, our earlier estimate for the Milky Way halo is Although the error bars are admittedly large, this suggests that the total mass of M31 is probably less than that of the Milky Way . We verify the robustness of our results to changes in the modelling assumptions and to errors caused by the small size and incompleteness of the data set.
Our surprising claim can be checked in several ways in the near future. The numbers of satellite galaxies, planetary nebulae and globular clusters with radial velocities can be increased by ground-based spectroscopy, while the proper motions of the companion galaxies and the unresolved cores of the globular clusters can be measured using the astrometric satellites Space Interferometry Mission ( SIM ) and Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics ( GAIA ). Using 100 globular clusters at projected radii 20 R 50 kpc with both radial velocities and proper motions, it will be possible to estimate the mass within 50 kpc to an accuracy of 20 per cent. Measuring the proper motions of the companion galaxies with SIM and GAIA will reduce the uncertainty in the total mass caused by the small size of the data set to 22 per cent.  相似文献

A review is presented of the progress that has been made in the last 3 years towards quantifying the properties of high-mass detached and semi-detached eclipsing binaries in Local Group galaxies. Comparisons between these observational results on masses, radii, temperatures and luminosities for stars in detached binaries and evolution models for single stars at the appropriate metallicity are found to be very good. New evolution models for interacting binaries passing through case A mass exchange are being calculated, and indicate a requirement for some mass loss to find agreement with the observational data. The observational data on such semi-detached systems show similar properties to those in the Milky Way galaxy. The directly-determined distances to all these eclipsing binaries are proving to be most valuable for strengthening the distance scale amongst the Local Group galaxies.  相似文献

We argue that observations on Milky Way and dwarf spheroidals imply existence of individual haloes around dwarf spheroidals. If neutrinos (or any other ‘hot’ particle) provide the dark matter then we show that: (i) Embedding of visible matter inside large (∼ few Mpc) dark matter islands is observationally untenable. (ii) Dwarf spheroidals possess dark matter haloes of about 10 kpc radius around them, and have an (M/L) ratio of about 104. (iii) The haloes of spiral galaxies (e.g. Milky Way) extend to about 100 kpc in radius. If ‘cold’ dark matter makes up the haloes, then no significant constraints are obtained. We discuss briefly the effect of these constraints on larger scales.  相似文献
