Using slab model atmospheres that are irradiated from both sides by photospheric, chromospheric, and coronal radiation fields we have determined the ionization and excitation equilibrium for hydrogen.The model atom consists of two bound levels (n = 1 and n = 2) and a continuum. Ly- was assumed to be optically thick with the transition in detailed radiative balance. The Balmer continuum was assumed to be optically thin with the associated radiative ionization dominated by the photospheric radiation field (T rad = 5940 K). The ionization equilibrium was determined from an exact treatment of the radiative transfer problem for the internally generated Ly-c field and the impressed chromospheric and coronal field (characterized by T rad = 6500K).Our calculations corroborate the hypothesis that N2, the n = 2 population density, is uniquely determined by the electron density N e. We also present ionization curves for 6000K, 7500K, and 10000K models ranging in total hydrogen density from 1 × 1010/cm3 to 3 × 1012/cm3. Using these curves it is possible to obtain the total hydrogen density from the n = 2 population density in prominences and spicules.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Spectrographic observations of the flash spectrum were made by the Kwasan Observatory at the total solar eclipse on 7 March, 1970. The integrated intensities of Fexiv 5303, Fex 6374, and the continuum were measured on the spectrograms as a function of height above the Sun's limb. It was found that a large amount of emission in the coronal lines originates in the interspicular regions of the chromosphere. Analysis of the data yielded that the interspicular regions consist of coronal material of T e = 1.6 × 106–1.2 × 106 and log N e = 8.5–9.5, and that a decrease in T e and an increase in N e occur with decreasing height.  相似文献

Type III radio bursts observed at kilometric wavelengths ( 0.35 MHz) by the OGO-5 spacecraft are compared with > 45 keV solar electron events observed near 1 AU by the IMP-5 and Explorer 35 spacecraft for the period March 1968–November 1969.Fifty-six distinct type III bursts extending to 0.35 MHz ( 50 R equivalent height above the photosphere) were observed above the threshold of the OGO-5 detector; all but two were associated with solar flares. Twenty-six of the bursts were followed 40 min later by > 45 keV solar electron events observed at 1 AU. All of these 26 bursts were identified with flares located west of W 09 solar longitude. Of the bursts not associated with electron events only three were identified with flares west of W 09, 18 were located east of W 09 and 7 occurred during times when electron events would be obscured by high background particle fluxes.Thus almost all type III bursts from the western half of the solar disk observed by OGO-5 above a detection flux density threshold of the order of 10–13 Wm–2 Hz–1 at 0.35 MHz are followed by > 45 keV electrons at 1 AU with a maximum flux of 10 cm–2 s–1 ster–1. If particle propagation effects are taken into account it is possible to account for lack of electron events with the type III bursts from flares east of the central meridian. We conclude that streams of 10–100 keV electrons are the exciting agent for type III bursts and that these same electrons escape into the interplanetary medium where they are observed at 1 AU. The total number of > 45 keV electrons emitted in association with a strong kilometer wavelength type III burst is estimated to be 5 × 1032.  相似文献

We determine the momentum distribution of the relativistic particles near the Crab pulsar from the observed X- and -ray spectra (103109 eV), provided that the curvature radiation is responsible for it. The power law spectrum for the relativistic electrons,f() –5, reproduces a close fit to the observed high-energy photon spectrum. The theoretically determined upper limit to the momentum (due to radiation damping), M 8×106, corresponds to the upper cut-off energy of the -ray spectrum, 109 eV. The lower limit to the momentum, m 1.8×105, is chosen such that flattening of the X-ray spectrum below 10 keV is simulated. The number density of these electrons is found to be much higher than the Goldreich-Julian density. We also discuss pulse shape and polarization of high-energy photons. The extremely high density of particles and the steep momentum spectrum are difficult to understand. This may imply that another, more efficient, mechanism is in operation.  相似文献

The intensities of 52 EUV emission lines from each of 9 hedgerow prominences observed at the limb with the Harvard experiment on ATM-Skylab have been compared with intensities from the interior of network cells at the center of the disk, in order to compare the prominence-corona (P-C) interface with the chromosphere-corona (C-C) transition region. The intensity ratio I cell/I prominence for each line varies systematically (in all of the prominences observed), with the temperature of formation of the line as T –0.6. The density sensitive C iii (formed at T 9 × 104 K) line ratio I 1175/I 977 implies an average density 1.3 × 109 electrons cm–3 in the P-C interface and 4 times this value in the C-C transition of the cells. The total optical thickness at the head of the Lyman continuum is 10 in most of the prominences studied; in two of the prominences, however, we cannot reject the possibility that o is large. Methods of analysis of these EUV data are developed assuming both a resolved and an unresolved internal prominence structure. Although the systematic differences between the P-C interface and the C-C transition are stressed, the similarities are probably more remarkable and may be a result of fine structure in the C-C transition.Currently on leave from the Institute of Astronomy, Hawaii; at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, 80309.  相似文献

X-ray bursts observed for energies lower than 25 keV are usually interpreted as being produced by a thermal plasma with several million degrees of temperature.A small number of events recorded at Arcetri by real time telemetry of SOLRAD 9 satellite agrees with a thermal interpretation and gives temperatures ranging between 10 × 106 and 30 × 106K and emission measures, N e 2 dV, between 1047 and 1048 cm–3.An impulsive event recorded on January 7, 1969 shows an anomalous behaviour. In this case the emission has been attributed to bremsstrahlung radiation from electrons with a power law energy distribution dN = KE - dE. The values of the spectral index and of the emission measure are given.A tentative interpretation of the event is suggested and the way to produce non-relativistic electrons with a power law energy distribution is investigated.  相似文献

The present paper is devoted to the interpretation of linear polarization data obtained in 14 quiescent prominences with the Pic-du-Midi coronagraph-polarimeter by J. L. Leroy, in the two lines Hei D3 andH quasi-simultaneously. The linear polarization of the lines is due to scattering of the anisotropic photospheric radiation, modified by the Hanle effect due to the local magnetic field. The interpretation of the polarization data in the two lines is able to provide the 3 components of the magnetic field vector, and one extra parameter, namely the electron density, because the linear polarization of H is also sensitive to the depolarizing effect of collisions with the electrons and protons of the medium. Moreover, by using two lines with different optical thicknesses, namely Hei D3, which is optically thin, and H, which is optically thick ( = 1), it is possible to solve the fundamental ambiguity, each line providing two field vector solutions that are symmetrical in direction with respect to the line of sight in the case of the optically thin line, and which have a different symmetry in the case of the optically thick line.It is then possible to determine without ambiguity the polarity of the prominence magnetic field with respect to that of the photospheric field: 12 prominences are found to be Inverse polarity prominences, whereas 2 prominences are found to be Normal polarity prominences. It must be noticed that in 12 of the 14 cases, the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field vector has a Normal polarity (to the extent that the notion of polarity of a vector component is meaningful; no polarity can be derived in the 2 remaining cases); this may explain the controversy between the results obtained with methods based on the Hanle effect with results obtained through the Zeeman effect. A dip of the magnetic field lines across the prominence has been assumed, to which the optically thick H line is sensitive, and the optically thin Hei D3 line is insensitive.For the Inverse prominences, the average field strength is 7.5±1.2 G, the average angle,, between the field vector and the prominence long axis is 36° ± 15°, the average angle, , between the outgoing field lines and the solar surface at the prominence boundary is 29° ± 20°, and the average electron density is 2.1 × 1010 ± 0.7 × 1010 cm–3. For the Normal prominences, the average field strength is 13.2±2.0 G, the average angle,, between the field vector and the prominence long axis is 53° ± 15°, the average angle, , between the outgoing field lines and the solar surface at the prominence boundary is 0° ± 20° (horizontal field), and the average electron density is 8.7 × 109 ± 3.0 × 109 cm–3.  相似文献

Observations of the post-flare loop system formed after the east limb proton flare of 12 August 1970 include (a) sets of filtergrams from which photographic subtractions have been constructed and (b) spectra from which a distribution of electron density as a function of temperature for three coronal regions are derived. The filtergrams show no indications of radial velocities in excess of 80 km/s. The spectra indicate an increase in density at the tops of the loops with most of the material at a relatively cool temperature: N 6.0 × 1010, T = 3 × 105K. The distribution functions obtained for areas just above and just below loops indicate a lower electron density and the presence of material at high temperatures, N 2.0 × 1010 and T 2.6 × 106K (above the loops) and T e > > 4.4 × 106K for material below the loops.  相似文献

Photographic photometry and spectroscopic observations of NGC 4575 suggest it to be a galaxy of reduced dimensionsD×d=14.4×13.5 kpc and of high luminosityM=–20.7. The rotation curve was also determined. Assuming a model of three homogeneous similar spheroids, we derived the density and mass distribution, and their total mass was found to be T =2.33 × 1010.The mass luminosity ratio does not vary withinr=24, indicating that the stellar composition is similar within it, and the ratio T / T 1 suggests that this object contains a high proportion of young stars. From the emission lines it is found that the electronic density Ne100 cm–3 is relatively low in the HII regions. The abundance ratiosN(N)/N(S) andN(N)/N(H) for the nucleus and two emission regions were also derived.  相似文献

We emphasize that a nonlinear treatment is required to realize the diagnostic potentiality of solar spiky emission. The observational constraints including the latest data on the harmonic structure, degree, and sense of polarization are discussed. A set of coupled equations for energy density of high-frequency normal modes of a magneto-active plasma involving the most important nonlinear effects within the three-wave approximation is deduced. The equations include both previously known and new effects. The qualitative evaluations of the equations obtained have provided a few new findings: (i) quasi-linear relaxation of fast electrons on quasi-potential waves (_) occurs in a characteristic time scale of the order of 10 ms if the frequency,f, is about 1 GHz; (ii) the stimulated scattering of the transverse waves on the background plasma particles is shown to be important if the brightness temperature of the spiky emission exceeds 1015–1016 K; (iii) the Raman scattering of the transverse waves on background plasma density inhomogeneities may suppress the electron cyclotron maser instability if n e 2 /n e 2 3 × (10–4–10–5).  相似文献

The optical depth at the head of the Lyman continuum, H, is determined at a number of positions in three hedgerow prominences using spectroheliograms (5 × 5 resolution) of C III 977, LC 896, and O IV 554 observed with the Harvard experiment on Skylab. At heights greater than 10 above the limb the maximum value of H is 30 to 50, which occurs at the central part of the prominences. For one of the prominences the determination of H is found to be consistent with data from spectroheliograms of Mg X 625. The degree of ionization of hydrogen is estimated from the intensity of LC 896 at H 1. In the central part of a model prominence N P/N HI1.9 for a reasonable range of the electron densities, where N P and N HI are the proton density and the neutral hydrogen density, respectively.  相似文献

Statistical analysis has been carried out of the relations between period and the ageP–t c, and the inclination of magnetic to rotation axis to the age –t cof pulsars have been done.Up to characteristic agest c=3×107 years the period increases as expected for magneto-dipole radiation energy lossesP=P m (1–exp(–t/ B ))1/n–1. Best-fitting parameters of this approximation are the time-scale of the magnetic moment decay B =4×106 years and breaking indexn=3.6. Fort c>3×107 years theP–t cdependence is significantly different.The inclination of magnetic to rotation axis decreases versus age, showing a secular alignment of the axis. But this decrease continues also only up tot c=3×107 years. Thus bothP–t cand –t cdependencies indicate that most of the pulsars of agest c>3×107 years are not evolutionary continuations of more younger ones, but apparently represent another population of pulsars, which differ by their genetic history or physical processes. This population includes all known millisecond pulsars. We suggest, that this population is a so-called recycled pulsar. The list of candidates of recycled pulsars is presented.A new evaluation of the inclination of the magnetic to the rotation axis for 105 pulsars is presented.  相似文献

We have studied the thermonuclear runaways which develop on white dwarfs of 1.205M and 1.358M accreting hydrogen rich material at 10–10 M yr–1. It is found that ignition of this material occurs at densities in excess of about 104 gm cm–3 and that the critical accumulated mass required to initiate the runaway is 0.7(1.5)×10–4 M for a 1.358(1.205)M white dwarf.  相似文献

Macrospicules have been observed in H and He i D3, on the disk and above the limb. In 1975, a rate of 1400 (A day)–1 is inferred, and the ratio of equatorial to polar rates 2. D3 intensities are a few × 10–3 of the disk center, and do not decrease in coronal holes. The ratio of H to D3 intensities is 10. We use a generic stochastic acceleration formalism to examine the power Lin (erg s-1) input to non-thermal electrons that cause noise-storm continuum emission. The analytical approach includes the derivation of the Greens function for a general second-order Fermi process, and its application to obtain the particular solution for the non-thermal electron distribution resulting from the acceleration of a Maxwellian source in the corona. We compare Lin with the power Lout observed in noise-storm radiation. Using typical values for the various parameters, we find that Lin 1023–1026 erg s-1, yielding an efficiency estimate Lout/Lin in the range 10-10 10-6 for this non-thermal acceleration/radiation process. These results reflect the efficiency of the overall process, starting from electron acceleration and culminating in the observed noise-storm emission.  相似文献

We discuss the longitudinal component of the magnetic field, B , based on data from about 135 quiescent prominences observed at Climax during the period 1968–1969. The measurements are obtained with the magnetograph which records the Zeeman effect on hydrogen, helium and metal lines. Use of the following lines, H; Hei, D3, Hei, 4471 Å; Nai, Di and D2, leads to the same value for the observed magnetic field component in these prominences. For more than half of the prominences their mean field, B , satisfy the inequalities 3 G B 8 G, and the overall mean value for all the prominences is 7.3 G. As a rule, the magnetic field enters the prominence on one side and exits on the other, but in traversing the prominence material, the field tends to run along the long axis of the prominence.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

A static spherically-symmetric model, based on an exact solution of Einstein's equation, gives the permissible matter density 2×1014 g cm–3. If we use the change in the ratio of central density to the radiusr=a (i.e., central density per unit radius (0/a), we call it radius density) minimum, we have estimated the upper limit of the density variation parameter () and minimum mass limit of a superdense star like a neutron star. Photometric data between 0.4 and 20 are discussed for K stars. Evidence of IR excess in the 11 region has been found for five stars in a sample of fourteen. The hypothesis of the presence of circumstellar matter in K stars seems to be confirmed.

The neutrino luminosity by the ordinary URCA process in a strongly magnetized electron gas is computed. General formulae are presented for the URCA energy loss rates for an arbitrary degree of degeneracy. Analytic expressions are derived for a completely degenerate, relativistic electron plasma in the special case of neutron-proton conversion. Numerical results are given for more general cases.The main results are as follows: the URCA energy loss rates are drastically reduced for the regime of great degeneracy by a factor up to 10–3 for 1, andT 910, where =H/H q ,H q =m 2 c 3/eh=4.414×1013 G. In the non-degenerate regime the neutrino luminosity is enhanced approximately linearly with for the temperature range 1T 910. Possible applications to white dwarfs and neutron stars are briefly discussed.We have been recently informed that in Gamow home-dialect (Odessa dialect) URCA means thief — (Private communication from Prof. G. Solar neutron emission during large flares is investigated by using neutron monitor data from the mountain stations Chacaltaya (Bolivia), Mina Aguilar (Argentine), Pic-du-Midi (France) and Jungfraujoch (Switzerland). Registrations from such days on which large flares appeared around the local noon time of the monitor station are superimposed with the time of the optical flare as reference point.No positive evidence for a solar neutron emission was found with this method, However, by using an extrapolation of the neutron transport functions given by Alsmiller and Boughner a rough estimation of mean upper limits for the solar neutron flux is possible. The flux limits are compared with Lingenfelter's model calculations.From the Chacaltaya measurements it follows: N 02.8 × 10–3 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P0 = 125 MV N 01.4 × 10–2 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P 0 = 60 MV and from Pic-du-Midi measurements: N 06.7 × 10–3 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P 0 = 125 MV N 04 × 10–2 N cm–2 s–1 per proton flare, E > 50 MeV, if P 0 = 60 MV P 0 = characteristic rigidity of the producing proton spectrum on the Sun.The flux limits estimated for some special proton flares are consistent with Lingenfelter's predictions for the acceleration phase but are too small for the slowing down phase. Therefore it is believed that Lingenfelter's assumption of isotropic proton emission from the flare region is not fulfilled.  相似文献
