Carbonate units occur in varying numbers in the fine-grade members of the alluvial fining-upwards cyclothems present in the Lower Old Red Sandstone of the Anglo-Welsh outcrop. They closely resemble contemporary soil-carbonates (calcretes) and hence show that the local Siluro-Devonian climate was relatively hot with a comparatively low seasonal rainfall. Compared with contemporary calcretes, the units suggest that sites on the alluvial plains were denied river-borne sediments for periods each in the general order of 104 years. The pedogenic interpretation of the carbonate units, developed in the light of the behaviour of rivers today, leads to alternative models for the geomorphology of the Siluro-Devonian alluvial plains and for their gross subsurface structure. Geomorphologically, the plains at any instant presented depositionally active and inactive areas in juxtaposition. Under some circumstances the relief was provided only by alluvial ridges. Under others, relief was afforded by valley sides and perhaps river terraces, in addition to ridges. Knowledge of the character of the Lower Old Red Sandstone in vertical sequence leaves as plausible three alternative gross structures for the alluvial pile beneath the plains. They differ chiefly in the lateral variability and connectedness of the palaeosols and place hitherto unavailable limits on the three-dimensional character of the cyclothems.  相似文献

A river crossing a coastal plain is assigned a zone of influence within which it may abruptly move and construct new channel sand-bodies following avulsion. Assuming uniform and steady subsidence at a fixed site, the alluvium formed beneath the zone is constructed over a series of equal time-steps, at the start of each of which an avulsion occurs, and during each of which an increment of sediment is accumulated beneath the plain. Each increment comprises an overbank sequence of a thickness proportional to subsidence rate and avulsion period, laterally equivalent to a generally weakly multi-storey sand body of a thickness proportional to channel depth, avulsion period, and subsidence rate. The choice of sand-body width is determined by stream size and mode of behaviour. The new position of the river after an avulsion is chosen using random-number tables combined with rules for the avoidance of older, relief-creating sand bodies. The model otherwise ignores sequence compaction, and so is valid only when operated for comparatively short periods. In accordance with a theoretical model of sand-body connectedness, in which uniform bodies are regularly packed, experimental sand bodies are virtually unconnected in those alluvial suites containing 50% or more of overbank fines. The degree of connectedness grows very rapidly as the proportion of sand bodies increases above 50%. The use of rules for avoidance does not prevent the experimental suites from being somewhat disordered internally, as shown by the wide variation in the composition of one-dimensional profiles through individual sequences. The results obtained from the model suggest that coarsening-upward alluvial suites of coastal origin may owe their character as much to progressively decreasing subsidence as to any independent decline in channel sinuosity.  相似文献

The fine to very coarse sandstones, gravelly sandstones and intraformational conglomerates of the mid to upper Brownstones are excellently exposed in large fresh road cuttings near Ross-on-Wye in the southern Welsh Borders. Detailed mapping of the cuttings reveals an hierarchically ordered system of mainly erosional bedding contacts which divide the beds into hierarchically structured packets. The smallest packets, involving cross-bedded or plane-bedded sediments or combinations of these, are consistent with deposition from strongly three-dimensional and often large, loosely periodic to non-repetitive bars. A locally developed facies of trough cross-bedded sandstones points to the infrequent occurrence of fields of three-dimensional dunes. The bar- and dune-related units are grouped into large complexes (related to the storeys of other workers), with an internal geometry consistent with lateral accretion (in places clearly symmetrical) combined with forward accretion on shoals (sand flats) within a braided channel, as in the South Saskatchewan River. In their turn, the complexes are combined into laterally extensive, conglomerate-floored sandstone sheets several metres thick. These seem to express the wandering of a braided channel across a mud-draped floodplain. To judge from the sedimentary structures and textures, the thickness of the lateral accretion deposits, and the size of the major scours, the bankfull discharge of the rivers was a few thousand cumecs each.  相似文献

Durability is one of the most important engineering properties of weak and clay-bearing rocks. Weathering can induce a rapid change in rock material from initial properties to soil-like properties. The sensitivity of a rock type against weatherability is usually described by a durability parameter, such as the slake durability index. However, marl resistance is not detected satisfactorily by the durability indices by using slake durability test as suggested by ISRM for two wetting–drying cycles. The results of this study are obtained from samples of compact or laminated eocene marls from region of Dalmatia, Croatia. The samples were subjected to 4 cycles of slake durability, point load tests, determination of dry density, determination of carbonate content and absorption of water. The scatter of data suggests that strength probably has no influence on the durability of marls. On the other hand a separate group of marl samples have a second-cycle slake durability index higher than approximately 85%, and the durability of these samples is classified as “medium-high” to “high”, although the visual inspection of samples after testing, suggests that they should have “medium” to “low” durability classification. According to obtained results these samples of marl fulfil the criterions for the durability classification: a carbonate content lower than approximately 65%, a dry density lower than 2.4 Mg/m3, and values of water absorption higher than 5%.  相似文献

Richly fossiliferous and disconformity-bounded facies successions, termed Mid-Cycle Condensed Shellbeds (MCS), occupy a mid-cycle position within depositional sequences in the Castlecliff section (mid-Pleistocene, Wanganui Basin, New Zealand). These shell-rich intervals (0.1–4.5 m thick) comprise the upper of two loci of shell accumulation in Castlecliff sequences. The lower disconformable contacts are sharp and variably burrowed, and are interpreted as submarine transgressive surfaces formed by storm or tidal current erosion at the feather-edge of contemporary transgressive systems tracts. Above (i.e. seaward) of this erosion surface, macrofossil remains (mainly bivalves and gastropods) accumulated, with little reworking, on the inner-shelf under conditions of reduced terrigenous sediment supply. The upper contacts are sharp transitions from shell-rich to relatively shell-poor lithofacies; parautochthonous shell accumulation was ‘quenched’by downlapping highstand systems tract shelf siltstones and muddy fine sandstones. Castlecliff MCS, together with the basal shell-rich part of overlying highstand systems tracts, occupy a stratigraphic position which corresponds to the condensed section that forms at the transgressive/highstand systems tract boundary in the sequence model of Haq et al. (1987). Palaeoenvironmental analysis indicates that Castlecliff MCS are substantially, if not entirely, transgressive deposits. This study therefore shows that the ‘condensation maximum’within a depositional sequence does not necessarily bracket the transgressive systems tract/highstand systems tract boundary.  相似文献

Boström, K., & Fisher, D. E.: Lateral fluctuations in pelagic sedimentation during the Pleistocene glaciations. Boreas, Vol. 1, pp. 275–288. Oslo, 1st December, 1972.
A total of 308 sediment samples of dated cores from 7 different locations have been analyzed for several major and trace elements. Our results, as well as previously published ones, show that during the Pleistocene the pelagic sediments have high concentrations of Mn, Cu, Co, REE, etc., in deposits of glacial age and low concentrations in corresponding interglacial ones; for hemipelagic sediments the situation is reversed. This shows that the boundary between reducing hemipelagic sediments and well-oxidized pelagic sediments has been migrating laterally back and forth due to climatic variations. Such sediment sequences may be easily confused with deposits where postdepositional migration of Mn and other elements has taken place.  相似文献

The Lower Devonian (Lochkovian‐Emsian) Cosheston Group of south Pembrokeshire is one of the most enigmatic units of the Old Red Sandstone of Wales. It consists of a predominantly green, exceptionally thick succession (up to 1.8 km) within the red c. 3 km‐thick fill of the Anglo‐Welsh Basin, but occupies a very small area (27 km2). Four formations—Llanstadwell (LLF), Mill Bay (MBF), Lawrenny Cliff (LCF) and New Shipping (NSF)—group into lower (LLF + MBF) and upper (LCF + NSF) units on stratigraphical and sedimentological criteria. Two palynostratigraphic associations (Hobbs Point and Burton Cliff) are recognised in the LLF. Overall, the Cosheston succession comprises a fluvial, coarsening‐upward megasequence, mostly arranged in fining‐upward rhythms. It is interpreted as the fill of an east‐west graben bounded by faults to the north and south of the Benton and Ritec faults, respectively. Both ‘lower Cosheston’ formations were deposited by east‐flowing, axial river systems draining a southern Irish Sea landmass. Drainage reversal, early in the deposition of the LCF, resulted in ‘upper Cosheston’ lateral, SW‐flowing rivers which carried predominantly second‐ and multi‐cycle detritus. The ‘lower Cosheston’ is characterized by an abundance of soft‐sediment deformation structures, probably seismically triggered by movements along the graben's northern bounding fault. A minimum average (≥ mesoseismic) earthquake recurrence interval of c. 4000 yr is estimated for the MBF. This and the correlative Senni Formation of south‐central Wales form a regionally extensive green‐bed development that represents a pluvial climatic interval. A new species of cladid crinoid, Hylodecrinus cymrus, is described from the Pembroke Limestone Group (Mississippian, Tournaisian, Courceyan) of West Angle Bay in south Pembrokeshire, Wales. It has a medium bowl‐shaped aboral cup, with strong ridges extending across the basals and radials forming pits at the plate corners. It is most similar to the late Tournaisian H. carinatus (Hall, 1861) of North America but differs in having less strongly cuneate brachials that are longer than wide with more subtle carinae on the aboral side. This specimen represents the first report of this genus from Europe, which most probably migrated from North America. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Karharbari and Barakar coal measures of Giridih and Saharjuri basins of Bihar, eastern India, comprise an interbedded assemblage of sandstone, shale and coal in variable abundance. The lithofacies composition records a progressive decrease in sandstone and enrichment of shale and coal from Karharbari up to Barakar. Application of first-order embedded Markov-chain statistics to subsurface data of Karharbari (52 borehole logs) and Barakar (10 borehole logs) reveals that deposition in both the coal measures followed a Markovian mechanism with variable probability, to yield a sequence of upward transition from sandstone through shale to coal. The repetitive fining-upward cycles are asymmetrical, i.e. sandstone → shale → coal → sandstone in the case of Karharbari, but symmetrical as sandstone → shale → coal → shale in Barakar. The abundance of sandstone and the asymmetrical nature of Karharbari cycles are attributed to abrupt shifting of channel bars in low-sinuosity anabranching streams. By contrast, the subequal amount of sandstone, shale and coal forming symmetrical cycles in the overlying Barakar Formation is due perhaps to a slow and gradual shift of the stream channels over and across the adjacent subenvironments of the flood plain.  相似文献

A 500‐m‐long road cutting in the Lower Devonian Snowy River Volcanics (SRV), eastern Victoria, Australia, exposes phreatomagmatic units and volcaniclastic sediments. Based on bed geometry, sorting and sedimentary structures, it was possible to distinguish base‐surge deposits from ephemeral fluvial deposits in this relatively well‐exposed ancient succession. Where the base‐surge deposits infill irregular topography, bed sets mantle the pre‐existing surface but thicken into topographic lows. In contrast, where the fluvial deposits infill topographic depressions, beds onlap laterally against channel walls. In addition, curvi‐planar slide surfaces within the base‐surge deposits generated by inter‐eruptive slumping indicate rapid emplacement as a constructional tuff rampart (? maar). The base‐surge deposits are always poorly sorted and commonly contain accretionary lapilli, reflecting their deposition from turbulent, low‐particle‐concentration, steam‐rich pyroclastic currents. In contrast, the fluvial deposits are relatively well‐sorted, reflecting hydraulic sorting and winnowing during tractional transport and deposition. There are significant differences in the types of sedimentary structures present. (1) Bedding in the base‐surge deposits is entirely tabular, and beds can be traced laterally to the limits of the outcrop. In contrast, the fluvial deposits have abundant internal scour surfaces that result in beds/bedding intervals lensing out laterally over intervals of the order of 5–10 m. (2) Cross‐beds with relatively high‐angle foresets are restricted to the fluvial deposits. (3) Laterally persistent tabular beds that contain abundant, densely packed accretionary lapilli are restricted to the base‐surge deposits. In summary, although base‐surge deposits and ephemeral fluvial deposits can appear superficially similar, it is possible to apply facies models carefully to distinguish between them, even in ancient successions.  相似文献

Tidal-shelf sedimentation: an example from the Scottish Dalradian   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The Jura Quartzite, a formation of probably late Precambrian metasediments over 5 km thick from the Caledonian belt in Southwest Scotland, has been divided into a coarse and three fine facies. The former comprises cross-bedded sands with some laminated sands and silt horizons, interpreted as the deposits of shallow marine tidal dunes and other bedforms together with some beach units. Deposition from suspension of silt and sand formed climbing dunes while largescale erosion produced flat or channelled surfaces. The fine facies comprise laterally persistent, parallel and cross-laminated sand units from millimetres to decimetres thick, interbedded with muds. The coarse and fine facies can be finely interbedded, the former sometimes filling decimetre deep, straight channels, cut in the latter. The fine facies exhibit structures indicative of deposition from decelerating currents and are interpreted as shallow marine storm deposits. The facies are compared with a model developed from published observations on modern shelf areas. Zones of erosion, large and small dunes, flat bedded sand and mud are considered to be the end product of a wide spectrum of tidal and storm conditions. During severe storms the fair weather tidal dunes may be modified or washed out, new dunes may be initiated downcurrent of the normal dune field while storm-sand layers are deposited in the distal zones. Hence, the nature of the preserved sediment blanket reflects the rare severe storm event rather than normal tidal conditions. The Jura Quartzite was deposited in a tidal gulf intimately connected with an ocean basin. The north-northeast directed palaeocurrent modes are probably roughly parallel to the coastline.  相似文献

Sedimentation coeval with growth of the Santaren anticline provides an excellent opportunity to study the relationships between sedimentation and anticline uplift through time. The Santaren anticline is a kilometre-scale, NW–SE trending fold offshore of Cuba, in the Bahamas foreland of the Cuban fold and thrust belt. The growth strata associated with this anticline consist of a thick package of carbonate sediments that were deposited without major interruptions from Neogene (and perhaps before) to present day.The excellent seismic resolution and age control of a number of seismic horizons within the growth strata allowed us to define 25 growth beds, each of them representing between 0.1 and 3.2 Ma. An analysis of the thickness of these beds allowed us to determine accurate quantitative values of cumulative decompacted thickness and crestal structural relief at the time of their deposition. In addition, for the same periods, sedimentation and fold uplift rates were calculated. Moreover, some information on relationships between sedimentation and fold uplift rates was inferred from the growth stratal geometry. Growth beds that overlap the fold crest and thin over it indicate that sedimentation rates outpaced fold growth rates during their deposition. Some overlapping beds have constant thickness indicating that no fold uplift occurred during their sedimentation. The rest of the growth beds exhibit onlap/offlap geometries that do not indicate a unique sedimentation/fold uplift rate relationship. Only in those cases in which the geometry of the underlying bed at the end of its deposition is known is it possible to infer a specific sedimentation/fold uplift rate relationship. As a result of this analysis, we have been able to (1) illustrate that the geometry of the growth strata associated with the Santaren anticline results from competition between sedimentation and tectonic fold uplift, (2) document the episodic and non-steady nature of fold growth, and (3) show that short-term rates (at the scale of hundreds of thousands years) provide much insight into the interplay between sedimentation and tectonic fold uplift that control the growth stratal patterns.  相似文献

The Upper Jurassic Marls of Mikulov present a formation that is considered to be the most promising strata to produce hydrocarbons in the Vienna basin. The marls are composed of dark pelagic marlstones that frequently contain layers of limestone with thickness reaching several hundreds of meters. Twenty-seven core samples from selected wells located in the south-eastern portion of the Czech Republic representing depths ranging from 2300 to 4500 m were analyzed by x-ray diffraction to assess bulk mineralogy and the progress of smectite illitization.Bulk mineralogy of the Mikulov Marls comprises carbonates (mean value = 54.4 mass%), clay minerals (26.6 mass%), quartz (15.0 mass%), and feldspar (1.6 mean%). In the decreasing order, the clay mineral fraction is composed of illite/mica, kaolinite, illite-smectite, and chlorite. The amount of smectite in illite-smectite decreases with depth from 70% to 28%. There is a change from random to ordered interstratification at the depth of 3300 m. The transition from short-range ordering (R1) to long-range ordering (R3) occurs at depths greater than 4,500 m.There was a good correspondence between thermal maturity parameters: the percentage of smectite in illite-smectite structures and vitrinite reflectance as a parameter of organic matter. The increase of the metamorphic grade was compared in respect to the geothermal gradient with adjacent basins.  相似文献

Cenozoic basalts widespread in eastern China constitute an important sector of the circum-Pacific Cenozoic basalt belt. Basalt samples were collected from Wudalianchi (Heilongjiang Province), Nushan (Anhui Province), Fangshan (Jiangsu Province), Zhuji (Zhejiang Province), and Mingxi(Fujian Province). These basalts, for the most part, belong to the alkali basaltic series, and partly to tholeiites. A variety of inclusions commonly occurs in the rock-forming minerals of these basalts. The physicochemical conditions of basalt formation in different areas have been reviewed in special reference to the inclusion data. Our studies have shown that there is a close relationship between the features of the inclusions and the physicochemical conditions of basalt formation, which can, therefore, be regarded as a guide to the mechanism of basaltic petrogenesis. The results of research in this aspect are presented in the present paper.  相似文献

Sedimentological study of the digitated lobes of gravel and associated sediments in the north of Durgapur results in identification of five major facies. Facies analysis indicates the sediments were deposited from an alluvial fan that has prograded in to an inferred shallow body of water. The analysis also suggests debris flow deposits dominate proximal part, modified grain flow and turbidity current the middle part and current generated channel and non-channel deposits in the distal part of the alluvial fan — fan-delta sequence.  相似文献

The Lamayuru lacustrine strata in Ladakh typify many of the carbonate-rich Pleistocene alpine lakes found in the semiarid environment of the northern Himalaya. Created by a 200-m-thick landslide, the lake was in existence by at least 35,000 yr ago, and may have persisted until 500–1000 yr ago. Represented in the center by thin turbidites and laminated muds, the lacustrine sedimentation along the lake margins and low-relief deltas characteristically displays a marked contrast between (1) clastic lenses representing rapid, sporadic, matrix-poor debris flows and periglacial inputs from the alpine slopes and (2) abundant, diverse, shallow-water, biologically dominated carbonate strata, among which organism-rich, chalky beds and oncolithic and encrusted stem-rich strata predominate. Resemblances of the Lamayuru lacustrine strata and their setting to those of former lakes throughout areas north of the Greater Himalayan crest suggest that the alpine, semi-arid environment would favor diversified, spacially restricted carbonate sedimentation punctuated by occasional clastic influxes. Such a depositional regime contrasts strongly with that found immediately south of the Himalayan crest where more humid conditions promote a more continuous clastic influx into intramontane lakes.  相似文献

Many mountain belts exhibit significant along‐strike variation in structural style with changes in the width of the orogen, the geometry and kinematics of the crustal‐scale thrust system, and the degree of partitioning between pro‐ and retro‐wedge deformations. Although the main factors controlling first‐order structural style are understood, the cause of these lateral variations remains to be resolved. Here we focus on the Pyrenees, characterized by significant lateral variation in structural style with a thrust system involving more and thinner thrust sheets in the eastern section than in the western part. Similarly, the prior Mesozoic rifting event was characterized by significant lateral variation in structure. We integrate available geological and geophysical data with forward lithospheric scale numerical models. We show that lateral variation in crustal strength attributed to inherited Variscan crustal composition accentuated during Mesozoic rifting explains the variation in structural style observed during Pyrenean mountain building.  相似文献

Shallow marine deposits comprising the Silurian Gray Sandstone Formation (GSF) exhibit pronounced process regime changes through time. The formation was deposited on the southern shelf of the Lower Palaeozoic Welsh Basin (UK), and conformably overlies the Coralliferous Formation. The basal Lithofacies Assemblage A (of Sheinwoodian age) is dominated by a storm‐dominated process regime, comprising shoreface and offshore shelf facies associations. The overlying Lithofacies Assemblage B records a mixed process regime, with units being deposited under both storm‐ and tide‐influenced conditions. Tidal‐influence prevailed during deposition of the overlying Lithofacies Assemblage C, with proximal to distal facies variations across a significant tide‐influenced river delta being observed. A return to storm‐dominated shoreface conditions is seen in the succeeding Lithofacies Assemblage D. Lithofacies Assemblage E (Homerian age) records the return of a tide‐influenced river delta to the area, prior to the conformable transition into the overlying Old Red Sandstone (ORS) Red Cliff Formation (of Ludlow age). Northward thickening of the formation across southern Pembrokeshire into the Musselwick Fault indicates a tectonic control on sedimentation, the formation infilling accommodation space developed in an intra‐shelf half‐graben. Recurring changes in process regime from storm‐ to tide‐influenced sedimentation may be related to the onset and subsequent cessation of tidal resonance in sub‐basins across the shelf area which itself was probably controlled by episodic tectonism. It is proposed that the Coralliferous and Gray Sandstone formations comprise the newly erected Marloes Group. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
