Data on the isotopic abundances and ratios of light rare gases (He and Ne) in 600 ordinary chondrites are analyzed. The ratio of cosmogenic isotopes (3He/21Ne) c in 20% of the ordinary chondrites has been found to lie well below the correlation line that represents the dependence of (3He/21Ne) c on (22Ne/21Ne) c . This effect shows up most clearly in 4He r -chondrites, particularly in meteorites with diffusion losses of radiogenic 21Ne c , and is most likely attributable to the predominant (compared to 3He c ) diffusion losses of cosmogenic 3Hecthrough the solar heating of meteorites in orbits with small perihelion distances. This effect is enhanced by periodic variations in orbital parameters (including the perihelion distance) of meteorites throughout their exposure histories. Thermoluminescence data for ordinary chondrites confirm this scenario. The (3He/21Ne) c ratio for 15% of the chondrites was significantly overestimated, which may stem from the fact that such meteorites were heavily shielded in preatmospheric bodies.  相似文献

Abstract— Based on optical microscopy, modal and electron microprobe analyses, six ordinary chondrites from Texas preserved in the Monnig Meteorite Collection at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas, were classified in compositional groups, petrologic types, and shock facies. Abstract— Three-dimensional finite strain and magnetic susceptibility anisotropy have been determined for 15 ordinary chondrites. The axes of strain and magnetic ellipsoids roughly correlate in both magnitude and orientation. The shapes of these ellipsoids are generally oblate spheroids that define a dominant foliation and a weak lineation. These characteristics suggest deformation involving uniaxial compaction. The degree of uniaxial deformation correlates with intensity of shock, as indicated by optical, TEM and chemical criteria. These data, plus the lack of a relationship between foliation and metamorphic history, indicate that dynamic processes, i.e., impacts, produced planar deformation fabrics in chondrites.  相似文献

Previous attempts to assign ordinary chondrites (OC) to meteoroid streams have been unsuccessful because the orbits of the proposed members had different radiants and, in some cases, the meteorites had significantly different cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) ages. Using more conservative criteria, we have identified four pairs of equilibrated OC (L6 Nejo, Salem; L6 Perpeti, Vouillé; L6 Drake Creek, Forsyth; H5 Okabe, Kerilis) wherein each member of the pair could conceivably have been derived from the same immediate precursor body (IPB). The members of each pair are of the same chondrite group and petrologic type; they have similar CRE ages and fell within 1 calendar day of each other (in different years). Because there is a moderate range in oxidation state (represented by mean olivine Fa) among equilibrated OC in each group, similarities in this intrinsic geochemical property between the members of two of the proposed pairs offer some support for the hypothesis that these rocks were derived from the same IPB. If the pairs are genuine, their precursor bodies were probably meter-size near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) with aphelia within or beyond the Main Asteroid Belt. Fragmentation of such NEAs is most likely to have occurred near aphelia; in principle, the ejecta could have spread somewhat along the NEAs’ orbits and collided with Earth on approximately the same calendar date but in different years. However, literature data show that, although ~670 meteorites with masses ≥10 kg reach the Earth’s surface each year, only five or six falls (typically in this mass range) are observed and recovered. This suggests that the chances of recovering more than one meteorite from a disrupted meter-size body in Earth-crossing orbit are small. It thus seems likely that the similar properties of the proposed OC pairs are due to coincidence.  相似文献

Abstract— We present a database of magnetic susceptibility measurements on 971 ordinary chondrites. It demonstrates that this parameter can be successfully used to characterize and classify ordinary chondrite meteorites. In ordinary chondrites, this rapid and non‐destructive measurement essentially determines the amount of metal in the sample, which occurs in a very narrow range for each chondrite class (though terrestrial weathering can result in a variable decrease in susceptibility, especially in finds). This technique is particularly useful not only for a rapid classification of new meteorites, but also as a check against curation errors in large collections (i.e., unweathered meteorites, the measured susceptibility of which lies outside the expected range, may well be misclassified or misidentified samples). Magnetic remanence, related to magnetic field measurements around asteroids, is also discussed.  相似文献

Abstract— Cooling rate experiments were performed on P‐free Fe‐Ni alloys that are compositionally similar to ordinary chondrite metal to study the taenite ? taenite + kamacite reaction. The role of taenite grain boundaries and the effect of adding Co and S to Fe‐Ni alloys were investigated. In P‐free alloys, kamacite nucleates at taenite/taenite grain boundaries, taenite triple junctions, and taenite grain corners. Grain boundary diffusion enables growth of kamacite grain boundary precipitates into one of the parent taenite grains. Likely, grain boundary nucleation and grain boundary diffusion are the applicable mechanisms for the development of the microstructure of much of the metal in ordinary chondrites. No intragranular (matrix) kamacite precipitates are observed in P‐free Fe‐Ni alloys. The absence of intragranular kamacite indicates that P‐free, monocrystalline taenite particles will transform to martensite upon cooling. This transformation process could explain the metallography of zoneless plessite particles observed in H and L chondrites. In P‐bearing Fe‐Ni alloys and iron meteorites, kamacite precipitates can nucleate both on taenite grain boundaries and intragranularly as Widmanstätten kamacite plates. Therefore, P‐free chondritic metal and P‐bearing iron meteorite/pallasite metal are controlled by different chemical systems and different types of taenite transformation processes.  相似文献

Abstract. The first of the fusion crusted Takysie Lake, British Columbia, stones were found by Nininger in June, 1965. A field trip to determine the number and distribution of the unusual stones got underway in July, 1966. An intensive search of all accessible areas resulted in collection of 55 specimens with a total weight of 127.6 pounds. The apparent southern, western, and northern limits of the strewn field were established. The eastern limits could not be learned because of the heavily forested terrain. The unique structure and compositional characteristics of the stones indicate either a new variety of meteorite or a secondary meteorite of lunar origin. Suggestions are made for further investigation.  相似文献

We propose that the Taurid meteor shower may contain bodies able to survive and be recovered as meteorites. We review the expected properties of meteorite‐producing fireballs, and suggest that end heights below 35 km and terminal speeds below 10 km s?1 are necessary conditions for fireballs expected to produce meteorites. Applying the meteoroid strength index (PE criteria) of Ceplecha and McCrosky (1976) to a suite of 33 photographically recorded Taurid fireballs, we find a large spread in the apparent meteoroid strengths within the stream, including some very strong meteoroids. We also examine in detail the flight behavior of a Taurid fireball (SOMN 101031) and show that it has the potential to be a (small) meteorite‐producing event. Similarly, photographic observations of a bright, potential Taurid fireball recorded in November of 1995 in Spain show that it also had meteorite‐producing characteristics, despite a very high entry velocity (33 km s?1). Finally, we note that the recent Maribo meteorite fall may have had a very high entry velocity (28 km s?1), further suggesting that survival of meteorites at Taurid‐like velocities is possible. Application of a numerical entry model also shows plausible survival of meteorites at Taurid‐like velocities, provided the initial meteoroids are fairly strong and large, both of which are characteristics found in the Taurid stream.  相似文献

To compare the spectra of main-belt S-type asteroids and ordinary chondrites, we investigated the correlation between the reflectance peak position near 750 nm, the bend of the spectral curves in the 359–701 nm region, the linear gradient in the 359–853 nm range, and the absorption band position near 950 nm. In the diagrams of spectral parameters, the regions occupied by S-type asteroids and ordinary chondrites are separated. The modeling of the optical effect of maturation of ordinary-chondrite samples, which leads to variations in the meteorite spectral parameters, was carried out under the following conditions: (1) the increase of the concentration of reduced-iron grains (SMFe) in particles without any change in their size; (2) the increase/decrease of the size of particles at a constant concentration of SMFe in them; (3) we also examined different relations between the concentration and the size of SMFe in particles. But, under no conditions did we manage to bring into coincidence the asteroid and meteorite regions simultaneously in all spectral-parameter diagrams. Hence, the conclusion was made that the difference between the reflectance spectra of ordinary chondrites and those of large main-belt S-type asteroids is determined not only by space weathering of asteroidal surfaces but also by systematic differences in the material composition.  相似文献

The Antarctic Continent has become the largest natural preservatory of meteorites in the world because of its unique geographical position and climatic conditions. Mt. Grove is located in the inland area of the Antarctic Continent where the conditions are favorable for the preservation of meteorites. During China's 15th, 16th and 19th Antarctic Scientific Explorations a large number of meteorites were recovered in the Mt. Grove region. Especially during the 19th Exploration in 2002/03 a total of 4448 meteorites were recovered, which at one stroke put China among countries that have recovered most numbers of meteorites. Here, we report mainly the results of microscope and electron microprobe studies of 28 meteorites recovered during the 16th Exploration. The meteorites are chemically classified based on their mean Fa contents of olivine, mean Fs contents of low-Ca pyroxene and abundances of Fe-Ni metal. Abstract— The Sahara is an extraordinary area for recovering meteorites. Between 1989 and 1993, 471 meteorites were collected in Algeria and Libya. Studies of 465 samples have been done. In addition to the classifications of the meteorites that were published in various “Meteoritical Bulletins” in past years, we present here the results on the determination of the shock metamorphism and the degree of weathering. Also, we have tried to solve the pairing problem by considering the find locations, the degree of shock metamorphism, the degree of weathering, and the mineral compositions of olivine and pyroxene. A comprehensive table listing all samples contains references about previous work on these meteorites.  相似文献

Abstract— Currently, 44 distinct meteorites are recorded from the Nullarbor Region in Western Australia. Recovery data for the Billygoat Donga, Cardanumbi, Cocklebiddy, Forrest Lakes, Laundry East, Lookout Hill, North East Reid, North Reid, Reid, Webb, West Forrest, West Reid and Yayjinna meteorites are amended, and North Forrest is recognized as distinct from North West Forrest (H). Since 1971, the recovery of more than 500 specimens (predominantly ordinary chondrites) from the desert has made the Nullarbor Region one of the most productive areas of the world for meteorite recoveries and has caused major problems for meteorite nomenclature. To overcome a lack of geographical names, we have delineated a grid of 47 named ‘areas’ in the Nullarbor Region. Henceforth, distinct meteorites will take the name of the ‘area’ in which they are found and a number (e.g., 001) in order of discovery. In general, the names of past recoveries remain unchanged. The absence of transportation processes in the region, and accurate documentation of the distribution of finds allows ‘pairing’ of specimens to at least 90% level of confidence.  相似文献

Abstract— The isotopic abundances of the noble gases in bulk samples of the Guangnan L6 chondrite and of the anomalous CV3 chondrite Ningqiang were measured. Guangnan yields a cosmic-ray exposure age of 2.9 ± 0.4 Ma and belongs to the group of L chondrites with low exposure ages. Ningqiang, however, shows a cosmic-ray exposure age of 42.2 ± 4.0 Ma, the highest for a CV3 chondrite. The concentrations of radiogenic 4He and 40Ar in Guangnan are the lowest observed in any ordinary chondrite. A U/Th-4He age of 27 ± 16 Ma and a 40K–40Ar age of 142 ± 14 Ma are calculated assuming L chondritic U, Th, and K concentrations. This assumption is justified considering the fact that a mineralogical composition typical for L chondrites was reported for this meteorite. The observed severe gas losses must have occurred at or before the onset of the exposure of the meteoroid to the cosmic radiation. For the Ningqiang carbonaceous chondrite concordant gas retention ages are obtained: The U/Th-4He age is 4170 ± 160 Ma whereas the 40K–40Ar age is 4260 ± 70 Ma, assuming average U, Th, and K concentrations for C3 chondrites.  相似文献
