The results obtained from a study of the mass distribution of 36 spiral galaxies are presented. The galaxies were observed using Fabry–Perot interferometry as part of the GHASP survey. The main aim of obtaining high-resolution Hα 2D velocity fields is to define more accurately the rising part of the rotation curves which should allow to better constrain the parameters of the mass distribution. The Hα velocities were combined with low resolution H  i data from the literature, when available. Combining the kinematical data with photometric data, mass models were derived from these rotation curves using two different functional forms for the halo: an isothermal sphere (ISO) and a Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW) profile. For the galaxies already modelled by other authors, the results tend to agree. Our results point at the existence of a constant density core in the centre of the dark matter haloes rather than a cuspy core, whatever the type of the galaxy from Sab to Im. This extends to all types the result already obtained by other authors studying dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies but would necessitate a larger sample of galaxies to conclude more strongly. Whatever model is used (ISO or NFW), small core radius haloes have higher central densities, again for all morphological types. We confirm different halo scaling laws, such as the correlations between the core radius and the central density of the halo with the absolute magnitude of a galaxy: low-luminosity galaxies have small core radius and high central density. We find that the product of the central density with the core radius of the dark matter halo is nearly constant, whatever the model and whatever the absolute magnitude of the galaxy. This suggests that the halo surface density is independent from the galaxy type.  相似文献

We study, through 2D hydrodynamical simulations, the feedback of a starburst on the ISM of typical gas-rich dwarf galaxies. The main goal is to address the circulation of the ISM and metals following the starburst. We assume a single-phase rotating ISM in equilibrium in the galactic potential generated by a stellar disc and a spherical dark halo. The starburst is assumed to occur in a small volume in the centre of the galaxy, and it generates a mechanical power of 3.8×1039 or 3.8×1040 erg s−1 for 30 Myr. We find, in accordance with previous investigations, that the galactic wind is not very effective in removing the ISM. The metal-rich stellar ejecta, however, can be efficiently expelled from the galaxy and dispersed in the intergalactic medium.
Moreover, we find that the central region of the galaxy is always replenished with cold and dense gas a few 100 million years after the starburst, achieving the requisite for a new star formation event in ≈0.5–1 Gyr. The hydrodynamical evolution of galactic winds is thus consistent with the episodic star formation regime suggested by many chemical evolution studies.
We also discuss the X-ray emission of these galaxies and find that the observable (emission-averaged) abundance of the hot gas underestimates the real one if thermal conduction is effective. This could explain the very low hot-gas metallicities estimated in starburst galaxies.  相似文献

We investigate the far-infrared (FIR) properties of a sample of blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) observed by AKARI . By utilizing the data at wavelengths of  λ= 65  , 90 and 140 μm, we find that the FIR colours of the BCDs are located at the natural high-temperature extension of those of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. This implies that the optical properties of dust in BCDs are similar to those in the Milky Way. Indeed, we explain the FIR colours by assuming the same grain optical properties, which may be appropriate for amorphous dust grains, and the same size distribution as those adopted for the Milky Way dust. Since both interstellar radiation field and dust optical depth affect the dust temperature, it is difficult to distinguish which of these two physical properties is responsible for the change of FIR colours. Then, in order to examine if the dust optical depth plays an important role in determining the dust temperature, we investigate the correlation between FIR colour (dust temperature) and dust-to-gas ratio. We find that the dust temperature tends to be high as the dust-to-gas ratio decreases but that this trend cannot be explained by the effect of dust optical depth. Rather, it indicates a correlation between dust-to-gas ratio and interstellar radiation field. Although the metallicity may also play a role in this correlation, we suggest that the dust optical depth could regulate the star formation activities, which govern the interstellar radiation field. We also mention the importance of submillimetre data in tracing the emission from highly shielded low-temperature dust.  相似文献

We present a search for  CO(1 → 0)  emission in three Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies: IC 5152, the Phoenix dwarf and UGCA 438, using the ATNF Mopra radio telescope. Our scans largely cover the optical extent of the galaxies and the stripped H  i cloud west of the Phoenix dwarf. Apart from a tentative but non-significant emission peak at one position in the Phoenix dwarf, no significant emission was detected in the CO spectra of these galaxies. For a velocity width of 6 km s−1, we derive 4σ upper limits of 0.03, 0.04 and 0.06 K km s−1 for IC 5152, the Phoenix dwarf and UGCA 438, respectively. This is an improvement of over a factor of 10 compared with previous observations of IC 5152; the other two galaxies had not yet been observed at millimetre wavelengths. Assuming a Galactic CO-to-H2 conversion factor, we derive upper limits on the molecular gas mass of  6.2 × 104, 3.7 × 103  and  1.4 × 105 M  for IC 5152, the Phoenix dwarf and UGCA 438, respectively. We investigate two possible causes for the lack of CO emission in these galaxies. On the one hand, there may be a genuine lack of molecular gas in these systems, in spite of the presence of large amounts of neutral gas. However, in the case of IC 5152 which is actively forming stars, molecular gas is at least expected to be present in the star-forming regions. On the other hand, there may be a large increase in the CO-to-H2 conversion factor in very low-metallicity dwarfs  (−2 ≤[Fe/H]≤−1)  , making CO a poor tracer of the molecular gas content in dwarf galaxies.  相似文献

We study the relations between luminosity and chemical-abundance profiles of spiral galaxies, using detailed models for the chemical and spectrophotometric evolution of galactic discs. The models are 'calibrated' on the Milky Way disc and are successfully extended to other discs with the help of simple 'scaling' relations, obtained in the framework of semi-analytic models of galaxy formation. We find that our models exhibit oxygen abundance gradients that increase in absolute value with decreasing disc luminosity (when expressed in dex kpc−1) and are independent of disc luminosity (when expressed in dex scalelength−1), both in agreement with observations. We notice an important strong correlation between abundance gradient and disc scalelength. These results support the idea of 'homologous evolution' of galactic discs.  相似文献

We present Fabry–Perot observations obtained in the frame of the GHASP survey (Gassendi HAlpha survey of SPirals). We have derived the Hα map, the velocity field and the rotation curve for a new set of 44 galaxies. The data presented in this paper are combined with the data published in the three previous papers providing a total number of 85 of the 96 galaxies observed up to now. This sample of kinematical data has been divided into two groups: isolated (ISO) and softly interacting (SOFT) galaxies. In this paper, the extension of the Hα discs, the shape of the rotation curves, the kinematical asymmetry and the Tully–Fisher relation have been investigated for both ISO and SOFT galaxies. The Hα extension is roughly proportional to R25 for ISO as well as for SOFT galaxies. The smallest extensions of the ionized disc are found for ISO galaxies. The inner slope of the rotation curves is found to be correlated with the central concentration of light more clearly than with the type or the kinematical asymmetry, for ISO as well as for SOFT galaxies. The outer slope of the rotation curves increases with the type and with the kinematical asymmetry for ISO galaxies but shows no special trend for SOFT galaxies. No decreasing rotation curve is found for SOFT galaxies. The asymmetry of the rotation curves is correlated with the morphological type, the luminosity, the  ( B − V )  colour and the maximal rotational velocity of galaxies. Our results show that the brightest, the most massive and the reddest galaxies, which are fast rotators, are the least asymmetric, meaning that they are the most efficient with which to average the mass distribution on the whole disc. Asymmetry in the rotation curves seems to be linked with local star formation, betraying disturbances of the gravitational potential. The Tully–Fisher relation has a smaller slope for ISO than for SOFT galaxies.

CCD photometry is presented for 20 dIrr galaxies situated in the nearby complexes CenA/M83, and CVnI as well as in the general field of the Local Volume. We present integrated magnitudes of the galaxies in   B , V , I   bands and also surface brightness profiles to a median isophote  μ B ∼ 28  mag arcsec−2. The popular Sersic parametrization of surface brightness profiles generally does a poor job of simultaneously fitting the inner cores and outer exponential surface brightness fall-offs observed in many of our targets. The observed sample is a part of a general project to image about 500 nearby  ( D < 10 Mpc)  dwarf galaxies in multiple bands.  相似文献

We analyze a sample of the Local Volume that contains 451 galaxies within 10 Mpc. We compare the various global parameters of these galaxies with their tidal index that characterizes the local density of the environment. The closest correlation is observed between the density of the galaxy’s environment and its morphological type. The abundance of neutral hydrogen in the members of close groups was found to be, on average, a factor of 3 lower than that in isolated galaxies. However, much of this difference is attributable to different morphological composition for the group members and field galaxies. The total mass-to-luminosity ratio is virtually independent of the tidal index of the galaxy, which indirectly indicates a low percentage of tidal systems among dwarf galaxies. All of the galaxies with three or more companions in the Local Volume are shown to have masses above the threshold value of 1010M.  相似文献

We have searched for nearby dwarf galaxies in 27 northern groups with characteristic distances 8–15 Mpc based on the Second Palomar Sky Survey prints. In a total area of about 2000 square degrees, we have found 90 low-surface-brightness objects, more than 60% of which are absent from known catalogs and lists. We have classified most of these objects (~80%) as irregular dwarf systems. The first 21-cm line observations of the new objects with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope showed that the typical linear diameters (1–2 kpc), internal motions (~30 km s?1), and hydrogen masses (~2 × 107 M ) of the new galaxies correspond to those expected for the dwarf population of nearby groups.  相似文献

Our knowledge about the dynamics, the chemical abundances and the evolutionary histories of the more luminous dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies is constantly growing. However, very little is known about the enrichment of the ultra‐faint systems recently discovered in large numbers in large sky surveys. Current low‐resolution spectroscopy and photometric data indicate that these galaxies are highly dark matter dominated and predominantly metal poor. On the other hand, recent high‐resolution abundance analyses indicate that some dwarf galaxies experienced highly inhomogeneous chemical enrichment, where star formation proceeds locally on small scales. In this article, I will review the kinematic and chemical abundance information of the Milky Way satellite dSphs that is presently available from low‐ and high resolution spectroscopy. Moreover, some of the most peculiar element and inhomogeneous enrichment patterns will be discussed and related to the question of to what extent the faintest dSph candidates could have contributed to the Galactic halo, compared to more luminous systems (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
