The formation of molecular hydrogen  (H2)  in the interstellar medium takes place on the surfaces of dust grains. Hydrogen molecules play a role in gas-phase reactions that produce other molecules, some of which serve as coolants during gravitational collapse and star formation. Thus, the evaluation of the production rate of hydrogen molecules and its dependence on the physical conditions in the cloud are of great importance. Interstellar dust grains exhibit a broad size distribution in which the small grains capture most of the surface area. Recent studies have shown that the production efficiency strongly depends on the grain composition and temperature as well as on its size. In this paper, we present a formula that provides the total production rate of  H2  per unit volume in the cloud, taking into account the grain composition and temperature as well as the grain size distribution. The formula agrees very well with the master equation results. It shows that for a physically relevant range of grain temperatures, the production rate of  H2  is significantly enhanced due to their broad size distribution.  相似文献

A solid-state feature was detected at around 2175 cm−1 towards 30 embedded young stellar objects in spectra obtained using the Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. We present results from laboratory studies of CO adsorbed at the surface of zeolite wafers, where absorption bands were detected at 2177 and 2168 cm−1 (corresponding to CO chemisorbed at the zeolite surface) and 2130 cm−1 (corresponding to CO physisorbed at the zeolite surface), providing an excellent match to the observational data. We propose that the main carrier of the 2175-band is CO chemisorbed at bare surfaces of dust grains in the interstellar medium. This result provides the first direct evidence that gas–surface interactions do not have to result in the formation of ice mantles on interstellar dust. The strength of the 2175-band is estimated to be  ∼4 × 10−19 cm  molecule−1. The abundance of CO adsorbed at bare grain surfaces ranges from 0.06 to 0.16 relative to H2O ice, which is, at most, half of the abundance (relative to H2O ice) of CO residing in H2O-dominated ice environments. These findings imply that interstellar grains have a large (catalytically active) surface area, providing a refuge for interstellar species. Consequently, the potential exists for heterogeneous chemistry to occur involving CO molecules in unique surface chemistry pathways not currently considered in gas grain models of the interstellar medium.  相似文献

We carry out a quantum chemical calculation to obtain the infrared and electronic absorption spectra of several complex molecules of the interstellar medium (ISM). These molecules are the precursors of adenine, glycine & alanine. They could be produced in the gas phase as well as in the ice phase. We carried out a hydro-chemical simulation to predict the abundances of these species in the gas as well as in the ice phase. Gas and grains are assumed to be interacting through the accretion of various species from the gas phase onto the grain surface and desorption (thermal evaporation and photo-evaporation) from the grain surface to the gas phase. Depending on the physical properties of the cloud, the calculated abundances varies. The influence of ice on vibrational frequencies of different pre-biotic molecules was obtained using Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) model with the integral equation formalism variant (IEFPCM) as default SCRF method with a dielectric constant of 78.5. Time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is used to study the electronic absorption spectrum of complex molecules which are biologically important such as, formamide and precursors of adenine, alanine and glycine. We notice a significant difference between the spectra of the gas and ice phase (water ice). The ice could be mixed instead of simple water ice. We have varied the ice composition to find out the effects of solvent on the spectrum. We expect that our study could set the guidelines for observing the precursor of some bio-molecules in the interstellar space.  相似文献

Water (H2O) ice is an important solid constituent of many astrophysical environments. To comprehend the role of such ices in the chemistry and evolution of dense molecular clouds and comets, it is necessary to understand the freeze-out, potential surface reactivity and desorption mechanisms of such molecular systems. Consequently, there is a real need from within the astronomical modelling community for accurate empirical molecular data pertaining to these processes. Here we give the first results of a laboratory programme to provide such data. Measurements of the thermal desorption of H2O ice, under interstellar conditions, are presented. For ice deposited under conditions that realistically mimic those in a dense molecular cloud, the thermal desorption of thin films (≪50 molecular layers) is found to occur with zeroth-order kinetics characterized by a surface binding energy, E des, of 5773 ± 60 K, and a pre-exponential factor, A , of 1030 ± 2 molecules cm−2 s−1. These results imply that, in the dense interstellar medium, thermal desorption of H2O ice will occur at significantly higher temperatures than has previously been assumed.  相似文献

Gas falling quasi-spherically on to a black hole forms an inner accretion disc if its specific angular momentum l exceeds l ∗∼ r g c , where r g is the Schwarzschild radius. The standard disc model assumes l ≫ l ∗. We argue that, in many black hole sources, accretion flows have angular momenta just above the threshold for disc formation, l ≳ l ∗, and assess the accretion mechanism in this regime. In a range l ∗< l < l cr, a small-scale disc forms in which gas spirals fast into the black hole without any help from horizontal viscous stresses. Such an 'inviscid' disc, however, interacts inelastically with the feeding infall. The disc–infall interaction determines the dynamics and luminosity of the accretion flow. The inviscid disc radius can be as large as 14 r g, and the energy release peaks at 2 r g. The disc emits a Comptonized X-ray spectrum with a break at ∼100 keV. This accretion regime is likely to take place in wind-fed X-ray binaries and is also possible in active galactic nuclei.  相似文献

We present ISOPHOT observations of eight interstellar regions in the 60–200 μm wavelength range. The regions belong to mostly quiescent high-latitude clouds and have optical extinction peaks from   AV ∼1–6 mag  . From the 150- and 200-μm emission, we derived colour temperatures for the classical big grain component which show a clear trend of decreasing temperature with increasing 200-μm emission. The 200-μm emission per unit   AV   , however, does not drop at lower temperatures. This fact can be interpreted in terms of an increased far-infrared (FIR) emissivity of the big grains. We developed a two-component model including warm dust with the temperature of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) of   T = 17.5 K  , and cold dust with   T = 13.5 K  and FIR emissivity increased by a factor of >4. A mixture of the two components can reproduce the observed colour variations and the ratios   I 200/ AV   and  τ200/ AV   . The relative abundance of small grains with respect to the big grains shows significant variations from region to region at low column densities. However, in lines of sight of higher column density, our data indicate the disappearance of small grains, perhaps a signature of adsorption/coagulation of dust. The larger size and porous structure could also explain the increased FIR emissivity. Our results from eight independent regions suggest that these grains might be ubiquitous in the galactic ISM.  相似文献

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia SN 2003cg, which exploded in the nearby galaxy NGC 3169. The observations cover a period between −8.5 and +414 d post-maximum. SN 2003cg is a normal but highly reddened Type Ia event. Its B magnitude at maximum   B max= 15.94 ± 0.04  and  Δ m 15( B )obs= 1.12 ± 0.04 [Δ m 15( B )intrinsic= 1.25 ± 0.05]  . Allowing   RV   to become a free parameter within the Cardelli et al. extinction law, simultaneous matches to a range of colour curves of normal SNe Ia yielded   E ( B − V ) = 1.33 ± 0.11  , and   RV = 1.80 ± 0.19  . While the value obtained for   RV   is small, such values have been invoked in the past, and may imply a grain size which is small compared with the average value for the local interstellar medium.  相似文献

We present SCUBA 850-μm, JCMT  CO( J =2→1)  , B -band imaging and VLA H  i observations of the NGC 7465/4/3 group of galaxies. The 850-μm emission associated with NGC 7465 extends to at least ∼2 R 25 and is well correlated with the H  i . We investigate a range of possible mechanisms by which dust beyond R 25 may be heated to give the observed extended submillimetre emission. By modelling the dust heating by stars in two extreme geometries, we fail to find any reasonable star formation scenario that is consistent with both the 850-μm and optical data. Furthermore, we do not detect any  CO( J =2→1)  emission coincident with the extended dust and atomic gas as would be expected if significant star formation were occurring. We show that shock-heating of dust via cloud–cloud collisions in the stripped interstellar medium of NGC 7465 could be sufficient to explain the extended 850-μm emission and lack of optical emission in the stripped gas, and suggest that cloud–cloud collisions may be an important dust heating mechanism in gas-rich systems.  相似文献

To better understand the conditions under which ice mantles form on grains in molecular clouds, three globules in the Southern Coalsack have been searched for the presence of H2O ice. Given the total lack of star formation in the Coalsack, it is an ideal site for studying unprocessed icy molecular mantles. In our sample of eight field stars lying behind the Coalsack we detect strong H2O ice absorption in the lines of sight to two stars and possible weak absorption in four others. We estimate H2O ice column densities or upper limits for these lines of sight. Compared to dark clouds such as Taurus, the Coalsack H2O ice column densities are lower than expected given the quiescent nature of the Coalsack region. It is possible that the chemical evolution of the Coalsack may simply be at too early a stage for significant ice mantles to appear on the grains, except perhaps in the densest parts of some of the globules. Alternatively, the presence or absence of ice absorption may be related to the distribution of dust along each line of sight, specifically, the relative contributions of dense globules and a more extended diffuse component. For example, our observations are consistent with an ice threshold extinction similar to that observed in the Taurus dark cloud if extinction amounting to   A V∼5  towards Globules 2 and 3 arises in the extended component. Globule 1 appears to have no extended component.  相似文献

We analyse the observed distribution of Eddington ratios  ( L / L Edd)  as a function of supermassive black hole mass for a large sample of nearby galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We demonstrate that there are two distinct regimes of black hole growth in nearby galaxies. The first is associated with galaxies with significant star formation [   M */star formation rate (SFR) ∼  a Hubble time] in their central kiloparsec regions, and is characterized by a broad lognormal distribution of accretion rates peaked at a few per cent of the Eddington limit. In this regime, the Eddington ratio distribution is independent of the mass of the black hole and shows little dependence on the central stellar population of the galaxy. The second regime is associated with galaxies with old central stellar populations (   M */SFR ≫  a Hubble time), and is characterized by a power-law distribution function of Eddington ratios. In this regime, the time-averaged mass accretion rate on to black holes is proportional to the mass of stars in the galaxy bulge, with a constant of proportionality that depends on the mean stellar age of the stars. This result is once again independent of black hole mass. We show that both the slope of the power law and the decrease in the accretion rate on to black holes in old galaxies are consistent with population synthesis model predictions of the decline in stellar mass loss rates as a function of mean stellar age. Our results lead to a very simple picture of black hole growth in the local Universe. If the supply of cold gas in a galaxy bulge is plentiful, the black hole regulates its own growth at a rate that does not further depend on the properties of the interstellar medium. Once the gas runs out, black hole growth is regulated by the rate at which evolved stars lose their mass.  相似文献

Several organic molecules have now been detected in the coma of Hale–Bopp. These species may either emanate from the nucleus, or, as has been suggested by Bockelée–Morvan et al., could be synthesized in the coma. We have modelled the gas phase chemistry which occurred in the coma of Hale–Bopp, concentrating on the observed organic molecules HCOOH, HCOOCH3, HC3N and CH3CN. We find that gas phase chemical reactions are unable to synthesize the observed abundances of these molecules, so all these species are most probably present in the nuclear ice. We briefly discuss the implications of this result for the connection between cometary and interstellar ices.  相似文献

C18O J  = 2–1, C17O J  = 2–1 and [C  I ] 3P13P0 emission from the dense cold cloud B335 has been observed and modelled in order to determine the C/CO ratio. The observed ratio is compared with a prediction by Tarafdar who assumes a mechanism in which the CO dissociation is caused by photons of energy ∼ 13.8 eV. These were postulated by Sciama to result from the decay of dark matter neutrinos. Our value for the C/CO ratio sets an upper limit to the strength of the neutrino decay dissociation process, thus providing a significant datum for interstellar chemistry theory.  相似文献

We present a ROSAT and ASCA study of the Einstein source X-9 and its relation to a shock-heated shell-like optical nebula in a tidal arm of the M81 group of interacting galaxies. Our ASCA observation of the source shows a flat and featureless X-ray spectrum well described by a multicolour disc blackbody model. The source most likely represents an optically thick accretion disc around an intermediate-mass black hole  ( M ∼102 M)  in its high/soft state, similar to other variable ultraluminous X-ray sources observed in nearby disc galaxies. Using constraints derived from both the innermost stable orbit around a black hole and the Eddington luminosity, we find that the black hole is fast-rotating and that its mass is between ∼80 M–1.5×102 M. The inferred bolometric luminosity of the accretion disc is ∼(1.1×1040 erg s−1)/(cos  i ). Furthermore, we find that the optical nebula is very energetic and may contain large amounts of hot gas, accounting for a soft X-ray component as indicated by archival ROSAT PSPC data. The nebula is apparently associated with X-9; the latter may be powering the former and/or they could be formed in the same event (e.g. a hypernova). Such a connection, if confirmed, could have strong implications for understanding both the birth of intermediate-mass black holes and the formation of energetic interstellar structures.  相似文献

The timing and extent to which the initial interstellar material was thermally processed provide fundamental constraints for models of the formation and early evolution of the solar protoplanetary disk. We argue that the nonsolar (solar Δ17O ≈ ?29‰) and near‐terrestrial (Δ17O ≈ 0‰) O‐isotopic compositions of the Earth and most extraterrestrial materials (Moon, Mars, asteroids, and comet dust) were established very early by heating of regions of the disk that were modestly enriched (dust/gas ≥ 5–10 times solar) in primordial silicates (Δ17O ≈ ?29‰) and water‐dominated ice (Δ17O ≈ 24‰) relative to the gas. Such modest enrichments could be achieved by grain growth and settling of dust to the midplane in regions where the levels of turbulence were modest. The episodic heating of the disk associated with FU Orionis outbursts were the likely causes of this early thermal processing of dust. We also estimate that at the time of accretion the CI chondrite and interplanetary dust particle parent bodies were composed of ~5–10% of pristine interstellar material. The matrices of all chondrites included roughly similar interstellar fractions. Whether this interstellar material avoided the thermal processing experienced by most dust during FU Orionis outbursts or was accreted by the disk after the outbursts ceased to be important remains to be established.  相似文献

Solid CO2 is observed to be an abundant interstellar ice component towards both quiescent clouds and active star-forming regions. Our recent models of gas–grain chemistry, appropriate for quiescent regions, severely underproduce solid CO2 at the single assumed gas density and temperature. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of our model results to changes in these parameters. In addition, we examine how the nature of the grain surface affects the results and also consider the role of the key surface reaction between O and CO. We conclude that the observed high abundance of solid CO2 can be reproduced at reasonable temperatures and densities by models with diffusive surface chemistry, provided that the diffusion of heavy species such as O occurs efficiently.  相似文献

The chemical desorption of an adsorbed CO molecule in the vicinity of H2-forming sites on cosmic dust grains in cold dense clouds is investigated theoretically, mainly using a model based on a classical molecular dynamics computational simulation. As a model surface for icy mantles of dust grains, an amorphous water ice slab is generated at 10 K, and the first and the second H atoms are thrown on to the model surface to reproduce the recombination process of the two H atoms, H+H→H2. Then, the time and space dependence of the local temperature increase of icy mantles caused by the release of H2 formation energy in the vicinity of H2-forming sites is examined. It is found that icy mantles are heated locally up to about 30 K in the surface region at R 4 Å and about 20 K at 4 R 6 Å, where R is the distance from the H2-forming site. The critical temperature of CO desorption is estimated to be about 20–30 K under conditions in typical dense clouds, which might be seen to be comparable to the above result. However, the lifetime of local heating of icy mantles is found to be too short, compared with the time-scale of CO desorption (1013 s) and that for H2 forming in the vicinity of an adsorbed CO molecule (more than 2×1013 s). Thus, it is found that the efficiency of chemical desorption of CO on a large dust grain is negligible. On the other hand, chemical desorption can occur on a small dust grain with size less than 20 Å.  相似文献

The specific catalytic effect of a silica grain on the formation of methanol via the sequential addition of H atoms to CO adsorbed on the surface is investigated. A negatively charged defect on a siliceous edingtonite surface is found to reduce the gas phase barriers for the H + COads and H + H2C=Oads reactions by 770 and 399 K, respectively, when compared to the same reactions in the gas phase. The catalytic effect of negatively charged surface sites could also be applicable to the hydrogenation of other adsorbed unsaturated species. However, the activation energies on the surface defect are still too large (1150 and 2230 K) for CH3OH to form efficiently at 10–20 K in the interstellar medium via a classical mechanism. It is therefore suggested that quantum mechanical tunnelling through the activation barrier is required for these hydrogen addition reactions to proceed at such temperatures. The calculations show that because the adsorption energies of CO and H2C=O on the negatively charged defect are substantial, CH3OH may form efficiently during the warm-up period in star-forming regions.  相似文献

We present intermediate-resolution HST /STIS spectra of a high-velocity interstellar cloud ( v LSR=+80 km s−1) towards DI 1388, a young star in the Magellanic Bridge located between the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. The STIS data have a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 20–45 and a spectral resolution of about 6.5 km s−1 (FWHM). The high-velocity cloud absorption is observed in the lines of C  ii , O  i , Si  ii , Si  iii , Si  iv and S  iii . Limits can be placed on the amount of S  ii and Fe  ii absorption that is present. An analysis of the relative abundances derived from the observed species, particularly C  ii and O  i , suggests that this high-velocity gas is warm ( T k∼103–104 K) and predominantly ionized. This hypothesis is supported by the presence of absorption produced by highly ionized species, such as Si  iv . This sightline also intercepts two other high-velocity clouds that produce weak absorption features at v LSR=+113 and +130 km s−1 in the STIS spectra.  相似文献

The desorption of molecular species from ice mantles back into the gas phase in molecular clouds results from a variety of very poorly understood processes. We have investigated three mechanisms: desorption resulting from H2 formation on grains, direct cosmic ray heating and cosmic ray-induced photodesorption. Whilst qualitative differences exist between these processes (essentially deriving from the assumptions concerning the species selectivity of the desorption and the assumed threshold adsorption energies, E t), all the three processes are found to be potentially very significant in dark cloud conditions. It is therefore important that all three mechanisms should be considered in studies of molecular clouds in which freeze-out and desorption are believed to be important.
Employing a chemical model of a typical static molecular core and using likely estimates for the quantum yields of the three processes, we find that desorption by H2 formation probably dominates over the other two mechanisms. However, the physics of the desorption processes and the nature of the dust grains and ice mantles are very poorly constrained. We therefore conclude that the best approach is to set empirical constraints on the desorption, based on observed molecular depletions – rather than try to establish the desorption efficiencies from purely theoretical considerations. Applying this method to one such object (L16 89B) yields upper limits to the desorption efficiencies that are consistent with our understanding of these mechanisms.  相似文献

A recent theoretical investigation by Terzieva & Herbst of linear carbon chains, C n where n  ≥ 6, in the interstellar medium has shown that these species can undergo efficient radiative association to form the corresponding anions. An experimental study by Barckholtz, Snow & Bierbaum of these anions has demonstrated that they do not react efficiently with molecular hydrogen, leading to the possibility of detectable abundances of cumulene-type anions in dense interstellar and circumstellar environments. Here we present a series of electronic structure calculations which examine possible anionic candidates for detection in these media, namely the anion analogues of the previously identified interstellar cumulenes C n H and C n −1CH2 and heterocumulenes C n O (where n  = 2–10). The extraordinary electron affinities calculated for these molecules suggest that efficient radiative electron attachment could occur, and the large dipole moments of these simple (generally) linear molecules point to the possibility of detection by radio astronomy.  相似文献
