A method is developed to search for air showers initiated by photons using data recorded by the surface detector of the Auger Observatory. The approach is based on observables sensitive to the longitudinal shower development, the signal risetime and the curvature of the shower front. Applying this method to the data, upper limits on the flux of photons of 3.8×10-3, above , are derived, with corresponding limits on the fraction of photons being 2.0%, 5.1%, and 31% (all limits at 95% c.l.). These photon limits disfavor certain exotic models of sources of cosmic rays. The results also show that the approach adopted by the Auger Observatory to calibrate the shower energy is not strongly biased by a contamination from photons.  相似文献

We describe a new method of identifying night-time clouds over the Pierre Auger Observatory using infrared data from the Imager instruments on the GOES-12 and GOES-13 satellites. We compare cloud identifications resulting from our method to those obtained by the Central Laser Facility of the Auger Observatory. Using our new method we can now develop cloud probability maps for the 3000 km2 of the Pierre Auger Observatory twice per hour with a spatial resolution of ∼2.4 km by ∼5.5 km. Our method could also be applied to monitor cloud cover for other ground-based observatories and for space-based observatories.  相似文献

Atmospheric conditions at the site of a cosmic ray observatory must be known for reconstructing observed extensive air showers. The Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) is a global atmospheric model predicated on meteorological measurements and numerical weather predictions. GDAS provides altitude-dependent profiles of the main state variables of the atmosphere like temperature, pressure, and humidity. The original data and their application to the air shower reconstruction of the Pierre Auger Observatory are described. By comparisons with radiosonde and weather station measurements obtained on-site in Malargüe and averaged monthly models, the utility of the GDAS data is shown.  相似文献

We present the results of an analysis of data recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory in which we search for groups of directionally-aligned events (or ‘multiplets’) which exhibit a correlation between arrival direction and the inverse of the energy. These signatures are expected from sets of events coming from the same source after having been deflected by intervening coherent magnetic fields. The observation of several events from the same source would open the possibility to accurately reconstruct the position of the source and also measure the integral of the component of the magnetic field orthogonal to the trajectory of the cosmic rays. We describe the largest multiplets found and compute the probability that they appeared by chance from an isotropic distribution. We find no statistically significant evidence for the presence of multiplets arising from magnetic deflections in the present data.  相似文献

Elemental abundances of the VH group of cosmic radiation have been measured in the energy interval 250–550 MeV nucl–1 in a balloon exposure at Sioux Falls (South Dakota) of a plastic detector LeXAN stack. The so obtained abundances have been extrapolated to the sources in the frame of the homogeneous model correcting for energy loss. After taking into account solar modulation, the best fit to model values has led to a escape mean free path e = 5E –0.4 g cm–2, whereE is the energy in GeV nucl–1, forE>1 GeV nucl–1, and a constant e = 5 g cm–2 forE1 GeV nucl–1. When turning to the diffusion model, also including an energy loss term, a diffusion coefficientD=3×1028 cm2 s–1 has been estimated.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce the concept of Lateral Trigger Probability (LTP) function, i.e., the probability for an Extensive Air Shower (EAS) to trigger an individual detector of a ground based array as a function of distance to the shower axis, taking into account energy, mass and direction of the primary cosmic ray. We apply this concept to the surface array of the Pierre Auger Observatory consisting of a 1.5 km spaced grid of about 1600 water Cherenkov stations. Using Monte Carlo simulations of ultra-high energy showers the LTP functions are derived for energies in the range between 1017 and 1019 eV and zenith angles up to 65°. A parametrization combining a step function with an exponential is found to reproduce them very well in the considered range of energies and zenith angles. The LTP functions can also be obtained from data using events simultaneously observed by the fluorescence and the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory (hybrid events). We validate the Monte Carlo results showing how LTP functions from data are in good agreement with simulations.  相似文献

We show that the temporal variations of the integrated galactic cosmic-ray intensity at neutron monitor energies (approximately above 3 GeV) can be reproduced applying a semi-empirical 1-D diffusion-convection model for the cosmic-ray transport in interplanetary space. We divide the interplanetary region into `magnetic shells' and find the relative reduction that each shell causes to the cosmic-ray intensity. Then the cosmic-ray intensity at the Earth is reproduced by the successive influence of all shells between the Earth and the heliospheric termination shock. We find that the position of the termination shock does not significantly affect the cosmic-ray intensity although there are some differences between the results for a constant and a variable termination shock radius. We also reproduce the cosmic-ray intensity applying the analytical solution of the force-field approximation (Perko, 1987) and find that the results cannot fit the observed data. Our results are compared with the Climax (geomagnetic cut-off 3 GV) and Huancayo (geomagnetic cut-off 13 GV) neutron monitor measurements for almost two solar cycles (1976–1996).  相似文献

The concept of the cosmic-ray path-length distribution is examined. The corresponding cosmic-ray propagation calculational procedure has been justified theoretically at relativistic energies (Ginzburg and Syrovatskii, 1964) where the effects of ionization energy loss are negligible. The present paper extends the use of the path-length distribution concept in cosmic-ray propagation calculations to nonrelativistic energies. Sufficient constraints to effect this extension are presented. The solution of the cosmic-ray propagation equations in terms of a Green's function approach is also investigated and is used to provide a formulation of the path-length distribution at non-relativistic as well as relativistic energies in terms of the cosmic-ray source distribution and the propagation characteristics of the interstellar medium. The leaky-box model of cosmic-ray propagation is also examined.  相似文献

Atmospheric parameters, such as pressure (P), temperature (T) and density (ρP/T), affect the development of extensive air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. We have studied the impact of atmospheric variations on extensive air showers by means of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The rate of events shows a 10% seasonal modulation and 2% diurnal one. We find that the observed behaviour is explained by a model including the effects associated with the variations of P and ρ. The former affects the longitudinal development of air showers while the latter influences the Molière radius and hence the lateral distribution of the shower particles. The model is validated with full simulations of extensive air showers using atmospheric profiles measured at the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory.  相似文献

An attempt to observe radar echoes from the comet Kohoutek was made at a radio frequency of 7840 MHz (λ ~- 3.8 cm) on 12 January 1974 using the Haystack Observatory radar in Massachusetts. A search for an echo over a range of band-widths covering 2Hz to 66kHz yielded no positive result. The upper limit on the radar cross section is therefore approximately 104B12km2, where B is the (unknown) bandwidth of the echo in Hertz. For B ? 100 Hz, it follows that (i) the nucleus, if a perfect spherical reflector, must be less than 250 km in diameter, and (ii) the density of any millimeter-sized particles must be less than 1m?3 for a coma of diameter 104km.  相似文献

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) produce a dominant fraction  ( F AGN∼ 80 per cent)  of the soft X-ray background (SXB) at photon energies  0.5 < E < 2 keV  . If dust pervaded throughout the intergalactic medium, its scattering opacity would have produced diffuse X-ray haloes around AGN. Taking account of known galaxies and galaxy clusters, only a fraction   F halo≲ 10 per cent  of the SXB can be in the form of diffuse X-ray haloes around AGN. We therefore limit the intergalactic opacity to optical/infrared photons from large dust grains, with radii in the range   a = 0.2–2.0 μm  , to a level  τGD≲ 0.15( F halo/10 per cent)(FAGN/80 per cent)−1  to a redshift   z ∼ 1  . Our results are only weakly dependent on the grain size distribution in this size range or the redshift evolution of the intergalactic dust. Stacking X-ray images of AGN can be used to improve our constraints and diminish the importance of dust as a source of systematic uncertainty for future supernova surveys which aim to improve the precision on measuring the redshift evolution of the dark energy equation-of-state.  相似文献
