The Faroe Bank Channel (FBC) is the deepest passage across the Greenland–Scotland Ridge and there is continuous overflow of dense water through the channel, which provides a substantial contribution to the global thermohaline circulation. Since November 1995, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) have been moored at the sill of the channel continuously, except for short annual servicing periods. In addition to this, CTD sections have regularly been occupied across the channel and instruments, recording temperature and salinity, have been moored for short periods. These observations demonstrate that the channel, due to its small width, can be monitored fairly well with only one ADCP mooring and they allow the generation of a time-series of overflow volume flux for the 1995–2005 period. The kinematic overflow flux, defined solely from the velocity field, was found to have an average value of 2.1 ± 0.2 Sv with a seasonal and with inter-annual variations of approximately 10% amplitude, but with no discernible trend for the whole period. The average flux of water with potential density exceeding 27.8 kg m−3 was found to be 1.9 ± 0.3 Sv with average properties: θ = 0.25 °C, S = 34.93, γθ = 28.01 kg m−3 for this period. No evidence was found for a weakening overflow flux, but the salinity of the FBC-overflow, especially the warmer parts, has increased substantially during the period, which implies an increased average density on the order of 0.01 kg m−3. Previous observations of a helical cross-channel circulation are confirmed and may explain the thin pycnocline layer, but shear-instability induces intensive mixing that puts a lower limit on the layer thickness. Critical control at one point of the sill cross-section, rather than friction, seems to govern the overflow dynamics and simple layered models can explain much of the observed features as well as the seasonal variation, but potential vorticity, as defined for a single overflow layer, is not conserved. A previously suggested 1950–2000 weakening of the FBC-overflow, which was partly based on a subset of the data presented here, is not supported by the full dataset.  相似文献

Brazilian legislation defines coastal zone as a national patrimony – the geographic space of interaction of air, sea and land formed by the counties directly influenced, but not necessarily by those located in the coastline; also included are those distant until 50 km from the coastline, holding activities of great impact for the coastal zone or its ecosystems. The definition includes also the territorial sea of 12 nautical miles. Coastal management is conducted by a national plan legally enforced, complemented by states and counties plans, and a coastal ecologic-economic zoning limited to small portions of the coastal zone. A resolution of the “Environmental National Council” defines as “permanent preservation areas”, of very restricted use, coastal ecosystems as mangroves, sand dunes, and reproduction sites of wild fauna. One could expect that the Brazilian coast should be more protected and properly managed than other countries where a national management plan is lacking (Argentina) or where the guidelines exist but are not yet legally enforced (South Africa). Notwithstanding, we note today in Brazil an intensification of conflicts opposing small-scale vs. industrial fishermen; shrimp farming vs. mangrove crab harvesting; resorts installation vs. native communities; oil and gas activities vs. NGOs; and conflicts on environmental permit between federal and state governmental agencies. This paper evaluates the possible reasons for the failure of the complex legal suite available in Brazil and suggests that participatory management and concerted actions with relevant stakeholders are the key elements for the successful cases.  相似文献

A batch sorption technique for the determination of particle–water interactions of hydrophobic organic micropollutants under simulated estuarine conditions is described. Results are presented for the behaviour of 2,2′,5,5′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (2,2′,5,5′-TCB) in river and sea waters, both in the presence and absence of estuarine suspended particles. Adsorption onto particles in sea water was enhanced compared with adsorption in river water owing to salting out of the compound, and possibly of the particulate organic matter, in the presence of high concentrations of dissolved ions. The particle–water distribution coefficient, KD, decreased from about 120×103 to 10×103 ml g−1, and from about 150×103 to 20×103 ml g−1, in river water and sea water, respectively, over a particle concentration range of 10–1000 mg l−1. Incomplete recovery of compound from the reactor walls is partly responsible for a particle concentration effect, while artefacts relating to inadequate sediment and water phase separation were ruled out following further experiments. The particle concentration effect, which is replicated in many field studies of hydrophobic organic micropollutants, including 2,2′,5,5′-TCB, is incorporated into a simple partitioning model and is discussed in the context of the likely estuarine behaviour of such compounds.  相似文献

Satellite-derived sea surface temperatures illustrate the variability of the path of the Tsushima Current in the Sea of Japan. In the spring of 1981 the Tsushima Current did not split as it left the Korea Strait and flowed into the Sea of Japan, which is contrary to the historical concept of branching. Warm water remained along Honshu, the main island of Japan, making a strong front oriented in an east-west direction. Hydrographic data confirm that this spring condition lasted through to the fall of 1981. On the other hand, during the springs of 1982 and 1983 the branching is evident from satellite images: one branch flowed northward along the east coast of Korea, and the other flowed eastward along Honshu of Japan.  相似文献

During the 2003-2004 winter season, the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR, Arlington, VA), sponsored a detailed in situ study of the mine burial process resulting from wave-seafloor-mine interaction at Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO, Edgartown, MA). In total, 16 mine shapes were deployed. Six were the Forschungsanstalt der Bundeswehr fur Wasserschall und Geophysik (FWG, Kiel, Germany) burial registration mines using optical sensors, four others were equipped with acoustical sensors, and six were simple shapes. Repeated acoustic surveys and detailed sediment sampling were conducted to characterize the site and the burial status of all objects. This paper focuses on data from three recovered optical systems. The records show three roll events at all three registration mines, which are necessary for scour burial. Two systems experienced a fourth roll event. Results from earlier experiments suggest only three (four) stages of progressively increasing burial despite frequent successive burial and exposure cycles (some as short as 1 h). During these burial-exposure cycles changes of buried mine volume reached up to 80%. The only reasonable explanation is a change of sediment height of up to 40 cm relative to the stably lying mines. This requires new concepts. Cyclic burial changes that were observed simultaneously at different positions cannot be explained with existing models. The least difficult explanation is ldquounderwater sand stormsrdquo which are characterized by a high sediment suspension.  相似文献

Hydrocarbons in the Mediterranean Sea were analyzed from 1 m depth during the winter of 1974–1975. Petroleum hydrocarbons averaged from 6.9 to 25.8 μg/l, with the Alboran Sea and the area off Libya having the highest concentrations. The freshest petroleum material was found off Libya and in the Tyrrhenian Sea.Considerable amounts of biologically produced hydrocarbon material were also present (0.8–22.8 μg/l). They could only be identified semi-qualitatively but appeared to be quite similar, with the exception of the material from the Tyrrhenian Sea.  相似文献

Hydrographic data collected along the West Coast of North America between January 1997 and January 1999 have been compiled into a web-based Atlas of the 1997–8 El Niño event. This paper discusses the organization of the Atlas, describes the data that were incorporated into the Atlas and explains how vertical and horizontal distributions for the different properties were constructed. The deep‐sea floor is increasingly subject to anthropogenic impacts. Consequently, there are increasing efforts to develop appropriate management strategies. Species‐level indicators and assessments are hampered in the deep sea by the high proportion of unknown species routinely encountered. If environmental management is to keep pace with exploitation, alternative approaches including higher taxon surrogacy (taxonomic sufficiency) must be considered. Here we compare genus‐ and species‐level studies of the diversity and ecology of deep‐sea macrobenthos on the West Shetland Slope (NE Atlantic). This is an environmentally complex region that encompasses a biogeographic transition from temperate North Atlantic to Arctic conditions, and so may be particularly challenging for any general relationship between species‐ and genus‐level analyses. We ask two questions: (i) does genus diversity reflect species diversity and (ii) does genus‐level ecology reflect species‐level ecology? We conclude that among the West Shetland Slope macrobenthos: (i) genus‐level α‐ and β‐diversity measures are highly correlated with and good predictors of their species‐level equivalents and (ii) that their ecology is very well described by genus‐level data. We further note that, given the complexity of the West Shetland Slope environment, it may be reasonable to expect these conclusions to hold in other deep‐sea environments.  相似文献
