We look for high‐amplitude variable young stars in the open clusters and associations of the Orion Belt. We use public data from the ASAS‐3 Photometric V ‐band Catalogue of the All Sky Automated Survey, infrared photometry from the 2MASS and IRAS catalogues, proper motions, and the Aladin sky atlas to obtain a list of the most variable stars in a survey area of side 5° centred on the bright star Alnilam (ε Ori) in the centre of the Orion Belt. We identify 32 highly variable stars, of which 16 had not been reported to vary before. They are mostly variable young stars and candidates (16) and background giants (8), but there are also field cataclysmic variables, contact binaries, and eclipsing binary candidates. Of the young stars, which typically are active Herbig Ae/Be and T Tauri stars with Hα emission and infrared flux excess, we discover four new variables and confirm the variability status of another two. Some of them belong to the well known σ Orionis cluster. Besides, six of the eight giants are new variables, and three are new periodic variables (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We have searched for new members of the TWHya association (TWA) among unidentified ROSAT X‐ray sources by identifying them in proper motion catalogues and selecting those that would be consistent with kinematical membership to the TWA. Spectroscopic follow‐up observations of 19 member candidates revealed the detection of moderate lithium absorption lines for the following three stars: GSC 7206 845, TYC 7216‐55, and TYC 7247‐12. The isochronal ages of the latter TYC stars are estimated to be ∼20 Myr while the other one has ∼100 Myr age based on a kinematic distance estimate that assumes TWA membership. However, the moderately Li‐rich stars are not likely to be new pre‐main sequence members of TWA partly because of the discrepant radial velocities. Infrared follow‐up imaging in the H‐band for the 3 stars shows companion candidates near two of them. While one system (TYC 7216‐55) is probably a near‐equal‐magnitude stellar binary, our follow‐up H‐band spectrum of the faint companion candidate near GSC 7206 845 shows that it is instead a background K‐type star rather than a companion. Direct N -body calculations are presented of the formation of Galactic clusters using GasEx , which is a variant of the code Nbody6 . The calculations focus on the possible evolution of the Orion nebula cluster (ONC) by assuming that the embedded OB stars explosively drove out 2/3 of its mass in the form of gas about 0.4 Myr ago. A bound cluster forms readily and survives for 150 Myr despite additional mass loss from the large number of massive stars, and the Galactic tidal field. This is the very first time that cluster formation is obtained under such realistic conditions. The cluster contains about 1/3 of the initial 104 stars, and resembles the Pleiades cluster to a remarkable degree, implying that an ONC-like cluster may have been a precursor of the Pleiades. This scenario predicts the present expansion velocity of the ONC, which will be measurable by upcoming astrometric space missions. These missions should also detect the original Pleiades members as an associated expanding young Galactic-field subpopulation. The results arrived at here suggest that Galactic clusters form as the nuclei of expanding OB associations.
The results have wide implications, also for the formation of globular clusters and the Galactic-field and halo stellar populations. In view of this, the distribution of binary orbital periods and the mass function within and outside the model ONC and Pleiades is quantified, finding consistency with observational constraints. Advanced mass segregation is evident in one of the ONC models. The calculations show that the primordial binary population of both clusters could have been much the same as is observed in the Taurus–Auriga star-forming region. The computations also demonstrate that the binary proportion of brown dwarfs is depleted significantly for all periods, whereas massive stars attain a high binary fraction.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of deep ROSAT HRI observations of the luminous blue variable P Cyg and its surrounding radio nebula. The HRI image provides a point source at the position of P Cyg. However, we show that this emission can be attributed to the ultraviolet leak of the ROSAT HRI. The X‐ray flux upper limit derived from the HRI data of this star is discussed in the context of X‐ray emission from hot stars. Furthermore, we present a search for diffuse X‐ray emission possibly associated with the radio nebula surrounding P Cyg. We compare our results to model predictions and X‐ray fluxes observed for shells around other hot stars. Additionally, we detect 10 X‐ray sources in the field of view. All but one of these X‐ray emitters have stellar counter parts in the Palomar Sky Survey. We suggest that they are active late‐type stars possibly belonging to Cyg OB1.  相似文献

The present investigation examines possible optical counterparts to 130 X-ray sources in the region of the α Persei open cluster (d ∽ 170pc, age ∽ 50 Myr) resulting from the analysis of three 22–25 ksec ROSAT PSPC pointings. In the same manner as for 73 X-ray sources from a raster survey in α Per (Prosser & Randich 1998), CCD photometry is employed to obtain magnitudes and colors for stars/objects close to the X-ray positions, with additional echelle and low-dispersion Hα spectra provided for some stars. For almost 60 X-ray sources, an optical counterpart with photometry acceptable for cluster membership is identified, some of which can be excluded from membership on the basis of discrepant radial velocity or X-ray characteristics. On the order of 30 new members or likely members associated with X-ray sources have been identified based on available data. A photometric rotation period has been obtained for one rapid rotator identified in X-rays.  相似文献

The Hipparcos Catalogue contains members of nearby OB associations brighter than 12th magnitude in V . However, membership lists are complete only to magnitude V =7.3. In this paper we discuss whether proper motions listed in the 'Astrographic Catalogue+Tycho' reference catalogue (ACT) and the Tycho Reference Catalogue (TRC), which are complete to V ∼10.5 mag, can be used to find additional association members. Proper motions in the ACT/TRC have an average accuracy of ∼3 mas yr−1. We search for ACT/TRC stars which have proper motions consistent with the spatial velocity of the Hipparcos members of the nearby OB associations already identified by de Zeeuw et al. These stars are first selected using a convergent-point method, and then subjected to further constraints on the proper-motion distribution, magnitude and colour to narrow down the final number of candidate members. Monte Carlo simulations show that the proper-motion distribution, magnitude, and colour constraints remove ∼97 per cent of the field stars, while at the same time retain more than 90 per cent of the cluster stars.
The procedure has been applied to five nearby associations: the three subgroups of Sco OB2, plus Per OB3 and Cep OB6. In all cases except Cep OB6, we find evidence for new association members fainter than the completeness limit of the Hipparcos Catalogue. However, narrow-band photometry and/or radial velocities are needed to pinpoint the cluster members, and to study their physical characteristics.  相似文献

The results obtained by Kroupa, Petr & McCaughrean (1999) for specific models of young compact binary-rich clusters are generalised using dynamical scaling relations, to infer the candidate set of possible birth models leading to the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), of which the Trapezium Cluster is the core. It is found that candidate sets of solutions exist which allow the ONC to be in virial equilibrium, expanding or contracting. The range of possible solutions is quite narrow. These results will serve as guidelines for future, CPU-intensive calculations of the stellar-dynamical and astrophysical evolution of the entire ONC. These, in turn, will be essential to quantify observables that will ultimately discriminate between models, thus allowing us to understand if the ONC is in the process of assembling a rich Galactic cluster, and, if this is the case, how it occurs.  相似文献

We report new photometric observations of the ∼200 000 year old naked weak‐line run‐away T Tauri star Par 1724, located north of the Trapezium cluster in Orion. We observed in the broad band filters B, V, R, and I using the 90 cm Dutch telescope on La Silla, the 80 cm Wendelstein telescope, and a 25 cm telescope of the University Observatory Jena in Großschwabhausen near Jena. The photometric data in V and R are consistent with a ∼5.7 day rotation period due to spots, as observed before between 1960ies and 2000. Also, for the first time, we present evidence for a long‐term 9 or 17.5 year cycle in photometric data (V band) of such a young star, a cycle similar to that to of the Sun and other active stars (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report observations of the He  i λ 5876 (D3) line in the late A- and early F-type stars in the Pleiades and Alpha Persei star clusters used to determine chromospheric activity levels. This represents the first sample of young stars in this temperature range with chromospheric activity measurements. We find the same average activity level in the young early F stars as in Hyades-age stars and field stars. In addition, the young star sample shows the same large star-to-star variation in activity as seen in the older stars. Thus, as a whole, chromospheric activity in this photospheric temperature range remains the same over nearly a factor of 100 in stellar age (50 Myr to 3 Gyr), in striking contrast to the behaviour of later-type stars. In the five late A stars we find three certain detections of D3 and one likely detection. This includes the bluest star yet observed with a chromospheric D3 line, Pleiades star HII 1362 at ( B − V )0=0.22, making it one of the earliest stars with an observed chromosphere. The late A stars have D3 equivalent widths comparable to the weakest early F stars. However, when comparing D3 measurements in the young late A stars with older late A stars, we find evidence for a slight decrease in activity with age based on the large number of non-detections in the older stars. We find an apparently linear relationship between the activity upper limit and B − V over our entire range of B − V . Extrapolated blueward, this relationship predicts that the chromospheric D3 line would disappear for all stars at B − V ≈0.13.  相似文献

We describe the results of a very deep imaging survey of the Trapezium cluster in the IJH bands, using the UKIRT high-resolution camera UFTI. Approximately 32 per cent of the 515 point sources detected are brown dwarf candidates, including several free-floating objects with masses below the deuterium-burning (planetary) threshold at 0.013 M, which are detectable because of their extreme youth. We have confidence that almost all the sources detected are cluster members, since foreground contamination is minimal in the 33-arcmin2 area surveyed, and the dense backdrop of OMC-1 obscures all background stars at these wavelengths. Extinction is calculated from the ( J − H ) colours, permitting accurate luminosity estimates, and temperatures are derived from the dereddened ( I − J ) colours. There is some evidence for a cut-off in the luminosity function below the level corresponding to several Jupiter masses, which may represent the bottom end of the initial mass function . Since star formation is complete in the Trapezium, this limit could have wide significance, if confirmed. However, it could well be an effect of the dispersal of the molecular cloud by the central O-type stars, a process for which the time-scale will vary between star formation regions.  相似文献

Because of the intense brightness of the OB‐type multiple star system σ Ori, the low‐mass stellar and substellar populations close to the centre of the very young σ Orionis cluster is poorly know. I present an IJHKs survey in the cluster centre, able to detect from the massive early‐type stars down to cluster members below the deuterium burning mass limit. The near‐infrared and optical data have been complemented with X‐ray imaging. Ten objects have been found for the first time to display high‐energy emission. Previously known stars with clear spectroscopic youth indicators and/or X‐ray emission define a clear sequence in the I vs. IKs diagram. I have found six new candidate cluster members that follow this sequence. One of them, in the magnitude interval of the brown dwarfs in the cluster, displays X‐ray emission and a very red JKs colour, indicative of a disc. Other three low‐mass stars have excesses in the Ks band as well. The frequency of X‐ray emitters in the area is 80±20 %. The spatial density of stars is very high, of up to 1.6±0.1 arcmin–2. There is no indication of lower abundance of substellar objects in the cluster centre. Finally, I also report two cluster stars with X‐ray emission located at only 8000–11000 AU to σ Ori AB, two sources with peculiar colours and an object with X‐ray emission and near‐infrared magnitudes similar to those of previously‐known substellar objects in the cluster. We present CCD BVI photometry for the southern open cluster NGC 2489 and its surrounding field. The sample consists of 2182 stars measured in an area of 13.6 × 13.6 arcmin2, extending down to   V ∼ 21.5  . These data are supplemented with CORAVEL radial-velocity observations for seven red giant candidates. A cluster angular radius of 6.7 ± 0.6 arcmin, equivalent to 3.5 ± 0.3 pc, is estimated from star counts carried out inside and outside the cluster region. The comparison of the cluster colour–magnitude diagrams with isochrones of the Padova group yields   E ( B − V ) = 0.30 ± 0.05, E ( V − I ) = 0.40 ± 0.05  and   V − M V = 12.20 ± 0.25  for log   t = 8.70 ( t = 500+130−100 Myr)  and   Z = 0.019  . NGC 2489 is then located at 1.8 ± 0.3 kpc from the Sun and 25 pc below the Galactic plane. The analysis of the kinematical data allowed us to confirm cluster membership for six red giants, one of them being a spectroscopic binary. A mean radial velocity of 38.13 ± 0.33 km s−1 was derived for the cluster red giants. The properties of a sample of open clusters aligned along the line of sight of NGC 2489 are examined.  相似文献

The results of CCD photometric survey performed with the 90/180 cm Schmidt‐Cassegrain Telescope of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Astronomical Observatory in Piwnice (Poland) and the 70/172 cm Schmidt Telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory (NAO) at Rozhen (Bulgaria) of the field of the 1 Gyr old open cluster NGC 6939 are presented. Twenty two variable stars were detected, four of them previously known. Four eclipsing systems (3 detached and 1 contact binary) were found to be members of the cluster. Analysis of the brightness of the contact binary V20 strongly supports the distance to the cluster of 1.74 ± 0.20 kpc. The small population of contact binaries in NGC 6939 confirms also the relatively young age of the cluster. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We aim to characterize the properties of the stellar clusters in the Milky Way. Utilising an expectation-maximization method, we determined that the cluster FSR 0358, originally discovered by J.D. Kirkpatrick, is the most likely real cluster amongst the cluster candidates from Froebrich et al. Here, we present new deep high resolution near-infrared imaging of this object obtained with the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). The analysis of the data reveals that FSR 0358 (Kirkpatrick 1) is a  5 ± 2 Gyr  old open cluster in the outer Milky Way. Its age, metallicity of   Z = 0.008  and distance from the Galactic Centre of 11.2 kpc are typical for the known old open galactic clusters. So far six of the FSR cluster candidates have been identified as having an age above 5 Gyr. This shows the significance of this catalogue in enhancing our knowledge of the oldest open clusters in the Galaxy.  相似文献

Using deep exposures (∼105 s) with the ROSAT High Resolution Imager, we have performed flux-limited surveys for X-ray sources in the vicinity of the Hyades-age open stellar clusters NGC 6633 and IC 4756, detecting 31 and 13 sources, respectively. Our primary aim is to search for so-far unrecognized cluster members. We propose identifications or classifications (cluster member, field star, extragalactic field object) for the X-ray sources, based on published membership lists, and on X-ray:optical flux ratios and optical colour–magnitude diagrams. Results of simulating the expected X-ray-emitting source populations are compared with the ROSAT measurements and with the expected capabilities of the XMM mission. The simulations provide a novel method of comparing the activity levels of NGC 6633 and IC 4756 with that of the Hyades. The measurements and simulations confirm that cluster members are the major class of X-ray emitter in these fields at flux levels     (0.1–2.4 keV), contributing ∼40 per cent of the total X-ray sources. We find six possible new members in NGC 6633 and four candidates in IC 4756; all require further observation to establish membership probability.  相似文献
