Summary An efficient tool in seismic signal analysis is offered by the array data processing techniques which are based upon similarity of pulse shapes between stations. Records at the six Swedish stations in general exhibit the signal resemblance required by the array methods. By applying a simple processing technique, the signal-to-noise ratio is increased by a factor of about 2, and the accuracy ofP-wave readings is improved. High similarity is found not only between the same phase (P, pP) at different stations, but also between different phases (P, pP) at the same or different stations. Altogether, records of eleven earthquakes were investigated in detail. The Swedish station network can be considered as a super-large aperture seismic array (SLASA), despite some differences in instrumental equipment. A general adaptation of array techniques to SLASA systems is discussed. Such methods will greatly improve the seismological information which can be extracted from ordinary station records, provided the stations are located on geologically homogeneous ground.  相似文献

The East Thuringian Seismic Network (OTSN) was installed in 1997. It started its operation with five and now consists of six seismic stations, the GRSN (German Regional Seismic Network) station MOX and a control and analysis centre. All stations are equipped with 3-component GÜRALP and short-period seismometers, RefTek 24-bit data acquisition systems (dynamic range 23.5 bit), hard disks, GPS-receivers, modems and communication computers for dial-up purposes. The seismic signals are sampled at 100 Hz and stored on the hard disk. Simultaneously, the signals are processed by a STA/LTA detector which generates an extended event list. The central station calls these event lists once per day, analyses them, produces a list of real seismic events and calls the waveform data for these events only from the single stations. All stations operate completely autonomously and the whole system works automatically, but all operations can also be carried out interactively. The event analysis is performed manually using common seismic analysis programs. The main purpose of installing the seismic network is to investigate the local seismicity, its relation to recent tectonics, the stress field and structure of the upper crust in order to render more precisely the seismic hazard of East Thuringia. A further aim of the network is to improve the seismic monitoring situation for the neighbouring regions, especially the Vogtland/Northern Bohemia and the Western Saxony area.  相似文献

Summary Utilising two years data collected at two tropical coastal stations, Madras (13°04N, 80°15E) and Waltair (17°42N, 83°18E) and for one tropical continental station, Nagpur (21°09N, 79°07E), the authors have re-evaluated the constants ofBrunt's regression equation. Analyses of the observations for Waltair and Nagpur show good correlation coefficients (r) between the values of the effective emissivity of the atmosphere (the effective emissivity is the ratio of incoming long-wave sky radiation at the surfaceR s , to black body radiation T 4) and the square root values of surface vapour pressuree (mb). The value ofr for Waltair from radiometer observations is 0.98. It is also determined for Waltair and Nagpur from Ångström compensation pyrgeometer observations as 0.83 and 0.91 respectively. A low correlation co-efficient 0.56 is obtained for Madras. It might be due to higher surface vapour pressure values at Madras than at Waltair and Nagpur. The applicability of the reduced regression equations are examined for different years for the different stations. The agreement between the computed values with the new regression equations and the observed long-wave sky radiation at the surface seems to be quite good.  相似文献

Summary Approximate expressions for the Hilbert transform of the functionf(t)=exp(- 0 2 t 2/2) cos( 0 t+v) are determined. This function, given a suitable choice of the three parameters 0, and v, approximates a wide class of seismic signals very well. The approximate expressions for the Hilbert transform enable very simple formulae to be given for the elementary seismograms of the individual seismic body waves (in the zero approximation of the ray theory). This accelerates the computation of ray theoretical seismograms considerably.  相似文献

Summary Relative arrival times at the Uppsala tripartite seismograph array station are used to determinedT/d and ray azimuth for some 200 compressional phases. Corrections, although very small, are applied for station elevations, telephonic transmission delays and array geometry. The computeddT/d and ray azimuths are further corrected to remove the effect of lateral heterogeneity immediately beneath the array station. Errors indT/d and azimuth are considered from a partly theoretical, partly empirical approach. They amount to about 0.18 sec/deg indT/d and 1.6° in azimuth. Standard deviations in epicentral locations are empirically determined to be about 2° due to slowness error and less than 1.5° due to azimutherror; or about 250 km overall. These figures compare favourably with other, more costly, arrays.  相似文献

Summary Causes of inconsistency in magnitudes determined by broad-band and short-period instruments and by different systems of observations are elucidated. In so doing, both observations of standard stations of USSO of the USSR and those of Soviet frequency selecting seismic stations () are employed. On the basis of large statistic material of the stationare network of USSO, a dependence of spectral constitution ofP waves and frequency-temporal fields constructed for some earthquakes have been revealed as well as a dependence of magnitude values upon an arrival time of maximal particle velocity. It has been shown that the range of measuring (A/T) max should be enlarged at least to 15 sec. A conclusion is drawn that the most stable magnitude consistent with the Catalogue by Gutenberg is the one determined by medium-period instruments.  相似文献

We estimate (/T) P of the lower mantle at seismic frequencies using two distinct approaches by combining ambient laboratory measurements on lower mantle minerals with seismic data. In the first approach, an upper bound is estimated for |(/T) P | by comparing the shear modulus () profile of PREM with laboratory room-temperature data of extrapolated to high pressures. The second approach employs a seismic tomography constraint ( lnV S / lnV P ) P =1.8–2, which directly relates (/T) P with (K S /T) P . An average (K S /T) P can be obtained by comparing the well-established room-temperature compression data for lower mantle minerals with theK S profile of PREM along several possible adiabats. Both (K S /T) and (/T) depend on silicon content [or (Mg+Fe)/Sil of the model. For various compositions, the two approaches predict rather distinct (/T) P vs. (K S /T) P curves, which intersect at a composition similar to pyrolite with (/T) P =–0.02 to –0.035 and (K S /T) P =–0.015 to –0.020 GPa/K. The pure perovskite model, on the other hand, yields grossly inconsistent results using the two approaches. We conclude that both vertical and lateral variations in seismic velocities are consistent with variation due to pressure, temperature, and phase transformations of a uniform composition. Additional physical properties of a pyrolite lower mantle are further predicted. Lateral temperature variations are predicted to be about 100–250 K, and the ratio of ( lnp/ lnV S ) P around 0.13 and 0.26. All of these parameters increase slightly with depth if the ratio of ( lnV S / lnV P ) P remains constant throughout the lower mantle. These predicted values are in excellent agreement with geodynamic analyses, in which the ratios ( ln / lnV S ) P and ( / lnV S ) P are free parameters arbitrarily adjusted to fit the tomography and geoid data.  相似文献

Summary Seven optimal networks consisting of 4 to 10 stations are compared for a given region, where velocity-depth profiles and the distribution of seismic intensity are known. Assuming that the standard error of arrival time is t =0.05 s and the standard errors of the parameters of velocity-depth profiles are equal to 5% of their values, the average standard errors of the origin time and focus coordinates are estimated. The application of optimum methods to the planning of seismic networks in the Lublin Coal Basin is presented, and maps of standard errors of origin time , depth and epicenter ( xy ) for the case of an optimum network of 6 seismic stations are given.  相似文献

A commercial version of the prototype New Zealand narrowband interference filter instrument has been run at Garmisch-Partenkirchen since autumn 1977. The vicinity of the Dobson stations Hohenpeissenberg and Arosa permitted a check of the filter instrument's utility, reliability and long-term stability in total ozone measurement by (i) station to station-or short-range intercomparisons of daily means and (ii) a several days' direct intercomparison at Arosa in spring 1978.The regression analysis with the Hohenpeissenberg data-covering the five month autumn-winter 1977/78 period with highly variable ozone-shows that the filter instrument's direct-sun modeX AD total ozone values were systematically too low by a conversion factor of 0.93. The excellent proportionality between the instruments is indicated by the standard deviation of only 1,3%. The (–7.0±1.3%) bias perfectly agrees with the result reported byBasher [1] for a similar, yet direct, intercomparison.During the direct Arosa intercomparison the filter instrument also tracked down short-time variations in a remarkable, though biased, parallelism with the Dobson instruments, and theX AD daily means fit well into the prognostic relationship derived from the preceding autumn-winter short-range intercomparison.A creeping deterioration of the characteristics of the 305.5 nm double filter then prevented any furtherX AD total ozone intercomparison. No final decision is possible whether this behaviour after a half year's run is typical or just an unusual exception. The otherwise excellent long-term stability is demonstrated by the comparison of theX CD daily means with the HohenpeissenbergX AD data for a 1 1/2 year's period (autumn 1977–spring 1979), resulting in the same bias relationship as for theX AD total ozone measurements.  相似文献

Summary In order to compare the course of microseisms recorded at the seismic stations of Praha and Prhonice, the relation between Praha (Wiechert astatic inverted pendulum) and Prhonice (Kirnos — electromagnetic seismographs) amplitudes was derived, using data from the time interval September 1967 — June 1968. It was found that the amplitudes at both stations are almost parallel in time with three almost simultaneous local maxima. In addition corresponding relations have also been found to be valid for the periods.  相似文献

Summary The magnetic susceptibility of quartz single crystals is diamagnetic (–14×10 –6 in SI units) and exhibits only very small anisotropy (mostly less than 1%); thus the susceptibility of the quartz matrix in quartzite can be regarded as virtually isotropic. Owing to the influence of the negative and isotropic susceptibility of the quartz matrix, the degree of anisotropy of quartzite, as inferred from model calculations, is higher than that of the ferrimagnetic fraction. This influence is very strong if the mean susceptibility of quartzite is in the vicinity of zero.

Summary A general analytical model for travel times of seismic waves propagating in a radially asymmetric Earth, is suggested. It is represented by a series of irreducible spherical tensor products with bipolar spherical coefficients. The main term of the series describes the travel times in a radially symmetric Earth, the others represent corrections due to the spherical assymmetry. The method of least squares is suggested for determining the bipolar spherical coefficients from observed seismic travel times. Since the proposed theory assumes that the analytical representation is related to the reference earth, the corrections to the non-zero focal depth and non-zero sea-level height of the seismographic station must be introduced.

Since the last eruption (1888–1890) volcanism at Vulcano, Aeolian Archipelago, southern Tyrrhenian Sea, has taken the form of persistent fumarolic activity. The gas-vapour phases of the geothermal systems are mainly discharged within two restricted areas about 1 km apart from each other, in the northern part of the island. These areas are La Fossa crater, and the beach fumaroles of the Baia di Levante. Fluids released at the two main fumarolic fields display quite different chemical and temperature characteristics, implying different origins. The local seismicity essentially takes the form of discrete shocks of shallow origin (depth1 km) at La Fossa, usually with energy < 1013 ergs. They are thought to be related to the uprise of pressurized hot gases and vapours discharged at the crater fumaroles. The present investigation points to the existence of two principal categories of seismic events (called M-shocks and N-shocks). These are short events (normally < 10 s). M-type shocks are thought to be due to resonance vibrations within the interior of the volcano, probably driven by the excitation of shock-waves within cavities deeply affected by deposition and alteration of self-sealant hydrothermal minerals. N-type events display features that resemble those of volcano-tectonic earthquakes, but have no recognizable S-phases. Here they are tentatively attributed to microfracturing of rocks which have been extensively hydrothermally altered. Results of the present study permit a preliminary conceptual model of the local shallow seismic processes in the framework of geochemical modelling of fumarolic activity and geological inferences from geothermal drilling.  相似文献

Summary If for a point on the earth's surface, the apparent (moveout) seismic velocities have been determined for a number of profiles in different directions, a possibility is offered to calculate true strike and dip of crustal boundaries. In the present paper the theory is developed, partly for a sloping Mohorovii discontinuity only, partly for sloping Conrad and Mohorovii discontinuities with parallel strikes. The theory for the sloping Mohorovii discontinuity is applied to field measurements at a place about 30 km west of Uppsala performed in June 1969. With a crustalP-wave velocity of 6.3 km/sec, a good fit to the observations is obtained for aPn-velocity of 8.55 km/sec and a downdip of Moho of 7.2° in the direction S 3.8° E. These numerical values are not the most important output of this paper. On the other hand, the testing of the method appears far more important, and also that improvements can be suggested in the experimental procedure in future applications of this method.  相似文献

Summary The seismic records obtained from the seismic station ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package) on the moon, due to the impact of the LM (Lunar Module) of the Apollo XII and the S-IVB rocket state of the Apollo XIII moon missions show the seismic signals decaying in amplitude slowly with time. The observed ringing phenomenon on these records along with the fact that the disturbances lasted for a long period were unexpected. Laboratory experiments on homogeneous spheres have produced this ringing. The physical explanation of this may be complicated, and it is quite possible that this observed ringing is due to the combined effect of the filtering, reflections and scattering of energy due to the curvature of the homogeneous (in the seismic sense) sphere. The explanation of the ringing of the moon may very well lie in such a study.  相似文献

Macroseismic studies, linear refraction profiles, and a two-dimensional seismic array study on Mount Etna, have all detected anomalous low velocity zones beneath the volcano. Seismic travel time delays together with high frequency attenuation observations confirm the presence of a large volume of partial melt beneath the volcano.
