This paper investigates the synergistic use of high-resolution multispectral imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data for object-based classification of urban area. The main contribution of this paper is the development of a semi-automated object-based and rule-based classification method. In the implemented approach, the diverse knowledge about land use/land cover classes are transformed into a set of specialized rules. Further, this paper explores supervised Gaussian Mixture Models for classification, which have been primarily used for unsupervised classification. The work is carried out on test data from two different sites. Contribution of the LiDAR data resulted in a significant improvement of overall Kappa. Accuracy assessment carried out for aforementioned classification methods shows higher overall kappa for both the study sites.  相似文献

Information on Earth's land surface cover is commonly obtained through digital image analysis of data acquired from remote sensing sensors. In this study, we evaluated the use of diverse classification techniques in discriminating land use/cover types in a typical Mediterranean setting using Hyperion imagery. For this purpose, the spectral angle mapper (SAM), the object-based and the non-linear spectral unmixing based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) techniques were applied. A further objective had been to investigate the effect of two approaches for training sites selection in the SAM classification, namely of the pixel purity index (PPI) and of the direct selection of training points from the Hyperion imagery assisted by a QuickBird imagery and field-based training sites. Object-based classification outperformed the other techniques with an overall accuracy of 83%. Sub-pixel classification based on the ANN showed an overall accuracy of 52%, very close to that of SAM (48%). SAM applied using the training sites selected directly from the Hyperion imagery supported by the QuickBird image and the field visits returned an increase accuracy by 16%. Yet, all techniques appeared to suffer from the relatively low spatial resolution of the Hyperion imagery, which affected the spectral separation among the land use/cover classes.  相似文献

Airborne laser scanning (ALS) data are increasingly being used for land cover classification. The amplitudes of echoes from targets, available from full-waveform ALS data, have been found to be useful in the classification of land cover. However, the amplitude of an echo is dependent on various factors such as the range and incidence angle, which makes it difficult to develop a classification method which can be applied to full-waveform ALS data from different sites, scanning geometries and sensors. Additional information available from full-waveform ALS data, such as range and echo width, can be used for radiometric calibration, and to derive backscatter cross section. The backscatter cross section of a target is the physical cross sectional area of an idealised isotropic target, which has the same intensity as the selected target. The backscatter coefficient is the backscatter cross section per unit area. In this study, the amplitude, backscatter cross section and backscatter coefficient of echoes from ALS point cloud data collected from two different sites are analysed based on urban land cover classes. The application of decision tree classifiers developed using data from the first study area on the second demonstrates the advantage of using the backscatter coefficient in classification methods, along with spatial attributes. It is shown that the accuracy of classification of the second study area using the backscatter coefficient (kappa coefficient 0.89) is higher than those using the amplitude (kappa coefficient 0.67) or backscatter cross section (kappa coefficient 0.68). This attribute is especially useful for separating road and grass.  相似文献

Region-based classification of PolSAR data can be effectively performed by seeking for the assignment that minimizes a distance between prototypes and segments. Silva et al. [“Classification of segments in PolSAR imagery by minimum stochastic distances between wishart distributions.” IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing 6 (3): 1263–1273] used stochastic distances between complex multivariate Wishart models which, differently from other measures, are computationally tractable. In this work we assess the robustness of such approach with respect to errors in the training stage, and propose an extension that alleviates such problems. We introduce robustness in the process by incorporating a combination of radial basis kernel functions and stochastic distances with Support Vector Machines (SVM). We consider several stochastic distances between Wishart: Bhatacharyya, Kullback-Leibler, Chi-Square, Rényi, and Hellinger. We perform two case studies with PolSAR images, both simulated and from actual sensors, and different classification scenarios to compare the performance of Minimum Distance and SVM classification frameworks. With this, we model the situation of imperfect training samples. We show that SVM with the proposed kernel functions achieves better performance with respect to Minimum Distance, at the expense of more computational resources and the need of parameter tuning. Code and data are provided for reproducibility.  相似文献

In this study, we test the potential of two different classification algorithms, namely the spectral angle mapper (SAM) and object-based classifier for mapping the land use/cover characteristics using a Hyperion imagery. We chose a study region that represents a typical Mediterranean setting in terms of landscape structure, composition and heterogeneous land cover classes. Accuracy assessment of the land cover classes was performed based on the error matrix statistics. Validation points were derived from visual interpretation of multispectral high resolution QuickBird-2 satellite imagery. Results from both the classifiers yielded more than 70% classification accuracy. However, the object-based classification clearly outperformed the SAM by 7.91% overall accuracy (OA) and a relatively high kappa coefficient. Similar results were observed in the classification of the individual classes. Our results highlight the potential of hyperspectral remote sensing data as well as object-based classification approach for mapping heterogeneous land use/cover in a typical Mediterranean setting.  相似文献

The classification of satellite imagery into land use/cover maps is a major challenge in the field of remote sensing. This research aimed at improving the classification accuracy while also revealing uncertain areas by employing a geocomputational approach. We computed numerous land use maps by considering both image texture and band ratio information in the classification procedure. For each land use class, those classifications with the highest class-accuracy were selected and combined into class-probability maps. By selecting the land use class with highest probability for each pixel, we created a hard classification. We stored the corresponding class probabilities in a separate map, indicating the spatial uncertainty in the hard classification. By combining the uncertainty map and the hard classification we created a probability-based land use map, containing spatial estimates of the uncertainty. The technique was tested for both ASTER and Landsat 5 satellite imagery of Gorizia, Italy, and resulted in a 34% and 31% increase, respectively, in the kappa coefficient of classification accuracy. We believe that geocomputational classification methods can be used generally to improve land use and land cover classification from imagery, and to help incorporate classification uncertainty into the resultant map themes.  相似文献

Abstract

This study proposes the development of a multi-sensor, multi-spectral composite from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A imagery referred to as ‘LSC’ for land use land cover (LULC) characterisation and compared with respect to the hyperspectral imagery of the EO1: Hyperion sensor. A three-stage evaluation was implemented based on the similarity observed in the spectral response, supervised classification results and endmember abundance information obtained using linear spectral unmixing. The study was conducted for two areas located around Dhundi and Rohtak in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, respectively. According to the analysis of the spectral reflectance curves, the spectral response of the LSC is capable of identifying major LULC classes. The kappa accuracy of 0.85 and 0.66 was observed for the classification results from LSC and Hyperion data for Dhundi and Rohtak datasets, respectively. The coefficient of determination was found to be above 0.9 for the LULC classes in both the datasets as compared to Hyperion, indicating a good agreement. Thus, these three-stage results indicated the significant potential of a composite derived from freely available multi-sensor multi-spectral imagery as an alternative to hyperspectral imagery for LULC studies.  相似文献

The development of robust object-based classification methods suitable for medium to high resolution satellite imagery provides a valid alternative to ‘traditional’ pixel-based methods. This paper compares the results of an object-based classification to a supervised per-pixel classification for mapping land cover in the tropical north of the Northern Territory of Australia. The object-based approach involved segmentation of image data into objects at multiple scale levels. Objects were assigned classes using training objects and the Nearest Neighbour supervised and fuzzy classification algorithm. The supervised pixel-based classification involved the selection of training areas and a classification using the maximum likelihood classifier algorithm. Site-specific accuracy assessment using confusion matrices of both classifications were undertaken based on 256 reference sites. A comparison of the results shows a statistically significant higher overall accuracy of the object-based classification over the pixel-based classification. The incorporation of a digital elevation model (DEM) layer and associated class rules into the object-based classification produced slightly higher accuracies overall and for certain classes; however this was not statistically significant over the object-based using spectral information solely. The results indicate object-based analysis has good potential for extracting land cover information from satellite imagery captured over spatially heterogeneous land covers of tropical Australia.  相似文献

In this study we explored the potential of open source data mining software support to classify freely available Landsat image. The study identified several major classes that can be distinguished using Landsat data of 30 m spatial resolution. Decision tree classification (DTC) using Waikato environment for knowledge analysis (WEKA), open source software is used to prepare land use land cover (LULC) map and the result is compared with supervised (maximum likelihood classifier – MLC) and unsupervised (Iterative self-organizing data analysis technique - ISODATA clustering) classification techniques. The accuracy assessment indicates highest accuracy of the map prepared using DTC with overall accuracy (OA) 92 % (kappa = 0.90) followed by MLC with OA 88 % (kappa = 0.84) and ISODATA OA 76 % (kappa = 0.69). Results indicate that data set with a good definition of training sites can produce LULC map having good overall accuracy using decision tree. The paper demonstrates utility of open source system for information extraction and importance of DTC algorithm.  相似文献

Remote sensing data utilize valuable information via various satellite sensors that have different specifications. Image fusion allows the user to combine different spatial and spectral resolutions to improve the information for purposes such as forest monitoring and land cover mapping. In this study, I assessed the contribution of dual-polarized Advanced Land Observing Satellite/Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar data to multispectral Landsat imagery. The research investigated the separability of forested areas using different image fusion techniques. Quality analysis of the fused images was conducted using qualitative and quantitative analyses. I applied the support vector machine image classification method for land cover mapping. Among all methods examined, the à trous wavelet transform method best differentiated the forested area with an overall accuracy (OA) of 94.316%, while Landsat had an OA of 92.626%. The findings of this study indicated that optical-SAR-fused images improve land cover classification, which results in higher quality forest inventory data and mapping.  相似文献

Reliable and up-to-date urban land cover information is valuable in urban planning and policy development. Due to the increasing demand for reliable land cover information there has been a growing need for robust methods and datasets to improve the classification accuracy from remotely sensed imagery. This study sought to assess the potential of the newly launched Landsat 8 sensor’s thermal bands and derived vegetation indices in improving land cover classification in a complex urban landscape using the support vector machine classifier. This study compared the individual and combined performance of Landsat 8’s reflective, thermal bands and vegetation indices in classifying urban land use-land cover. The integration of Landsat 8 reflective bands, derived vegetation indices and thermal bands overall produced significantly higher accuracy classification results than using traditional bands as standalone (i.e. overall, user and producer accuracies). An overall accuracy above 89.33% and a kappa index of 0.86, significantly higher than the one obtained with the use of the traditional reflective bands as a standalone data-set and other analysis stages. On average, the results also indicate high producer and user accuracies (i.e. above 80%) for most of the classes with a McNemar’s Z score of 9.00 at 95% confidence interval showing significant improvement compared with classification using reflective bands as standalone. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the integration of the Landsat 8’s OLI and TIR data presents an invaluable potential for accurate and robust land cover classification in a complex urban landscape, especially in areas where the availability of high resolution datasets remains a challenge.  相似文献

Detailed and enhanced land use land cover (LULC) feature extraction is possible by merging the information extracted from two different sensors of different capability. In this study different pixel level image fusion algorithms (PCA, Brovey, Multiplicative, Wavelet and combination of PCA & IHS) are used for integrating the derived information like texture, roughness, polarization from microwave data and high spectral information from hyperspectral data. Span image which is total intensity image generated from Advanced Land observing Satellite-Phase array L-band SAR (ALOS-PALSAR) quad polarization data and EO-1 Hyperion data (242 spectral bands) were used for fusion. Overall PCA fused images had shown better result than other fusion techniques used in this study. However, Brovey fusion method was found good for differentiating urban features. Classification using support vector machines was conducted for classifying Hyperion, ALOS PALSAR and fused images. It was observed that overall classification accuracy and kappa coefficient with PCA fused images was relatively better than other fusion techniques as it was able to discriminate various LULC features more clearly.  相似文献

Reliability of the scattering model based polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) speckle filter depends upon the accurate decomposition and classification of the scattering mechanisms. This paper presents an improved scattering property based contextual speckle filter based upon an iterative classification of the scattering mechanisms. It applies a Cloude-Pottier eigenvalue-eigenvector decomposition and a fuzzy H/α classification to determine the scattering mechanisms on a pre-estimate of the coherency matrix. The H/α classification identifies pixels with homogeneous scattering properties. A coarse pixel selection rule groups pixels that are either single bounce, double bounce or volume scatterers. A fine pixel selection rule is applied to pixels within each canonical scattering mechanism. We filter the PolSAR data and depending on the type of image scene (urban or rural) use either the coarse or fine pixel selection rule. Iterative refinement of the Wishart H/α classification reduces the speckle in the PolSAR data. Effectiveness of this new filter is demonstrated by using both simulated and real PolSAR data. It is compared with the refined Lee filter, the scattering model based filter and the non-local means filter. The study concludes that the proposed filter compares favorably with other polarimetric speckle filters in preserving polarimetric information, point scatterers and subtle features in PolSAR data.  相似文献

The main research goal of this study is to investigate the complementarity and fusion of different frequencies (L- and P-band), polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) and polarimetric interferometric (PolInSAR) data for land cover classification. A large feature set was derived from each of these four modalities and a two-level fusion method was developed: Logistic regression (LR) as ‘feature-level fusion’ and the neural-network (NN) method for higher level fusion. For comparison, a support vector machine (SVM) was also applied. NN and SVM were applied on various combinations of the feature sets.  相似文献

The use of remotely sensed imagery to generate land cover models is common today. Validation of these models typically involves the use of an independent set of ground-truth data that are used to calculate an error matrix resulting in estimates of omission, commission, and overall error. However, each estimate of error contains a degree of uncertainty itself due to: (1) conceptual bias; (2) location/registration and co-registration errors; and (3) variability in the sample sites used to produce and validate the model. In this study, focus was not placed upon describing land cover mapping techniques, but rather the application of bootstrap resampling to improve the characterization of classification error, demonstrate a method to determine uncertainty from sample site variability, and calculate confidence limits using statistical bootstrap resampling of 500 sample sites acquired within a single Landsat 5 TM image. The sample sites represented one of five land cover categories (water, roads, lava, irrigated agriculture, and rangelands), with each category containing 100 samples. The sample set was then iteratively resampled (n = 200) and 65 sites were randomly selected (without replacement) for use as classification training sites, while the balance (n = 35) were used for validation. Imagery was subsequently classified using a maximum likelihood technique and the model validated using a standard error matrix. This classification-validation process was repeated 200 times. Confidence intervals were then calculated using the resulting omission and commission errors. Results from this experiment indicate that bootstrap resampling is an effective method to characterize classification uncertainty and determine the effect of sample bias.  相似文献
