In this paper, we address the average compositions (including the contents of H2O, Cl, F, and S) and the compositional structure of oceanic mantle plumes on the basis of element contents and ratios in ocean island magmas. The average contents of incompatible volatile and nonvolatile elements were calculated for the material of mantle plumes using a thermal and a more plausible moderately enriched model. The following average contents were estimated for the plume mantle: 510 ppm K2O, 520 ppm H2O, 21 ppm Cl, 55 ppm F, and 83 ppm S. These values are significantly higher than those of the depleted mantle (except for S). The primitive mantle normalized average content of water in mantle plumes is similar to those of La and Ce but lower than those of K, Cl, and Sr. This is at odds with the hypothesis of “wet” mantle plumes. Three types of basaltic magmas distinguished in our previous study (Part I) characterize three types of plume sources (MI, MII, and MIII). Using the favored moderately enriched model, the average contents of H2O, Cl, F, and S were estimated for the three sources (ppm): 130, 33, 11, and 110 for MI; 110, 12, 65, and 45 for MII; and 530, 29, 49, and 110 for MIII, respectively. The plume mantle is heterogeneous and its heterogeneity can be described by the presence of three main types of compositions, one of which (MI) is similar to the composition of the mid-ocean ridge mantle and the other two types (MII and MIII) are moderately enriched in K, Ti, P, F, and incompatible trace elements but depleted in Cl, H2O, and sometimes S. The compositions of MII and MIII have different H2O, Cl, and S contents: MII is significantly depleted in these components compared with MIII. The MII component is probably similar to the enriched mantle (EM). In addition to the aforementioned three main components, the plume mantle probably contains high-Cl and low-F materials, which are related to the recycling of the oceanic and continental crust. All the observed characteristics of the mantle plumes are in adequate agreement with the model of a zonal mantle plume including a central part hot and depleted in H2O, Cl, and S; a periphery enriched in volatile components; and the enclosing mantle interacting with the plume material.  相似文献

The average compositions (including H2O, Cl, F, and S contents) and chemical structure of oceanic mantle plumes were estimated on the basis of the ratios of incompatible volatile components, potassium, and some other elements in the basaltic magmas of ocean islands (melt inclusions and quenched glasses). The following average concentrations were estimated for the plume mantle: 510 ppm K2O, 520 ppm H2O, 21 ppm Cl, 55 ppm F, and 83 ppm S; these values are significantly higher than those of the depleted mantle (except for S). The abundances of H2O, Cl, and S are lower than in the primitive mantle. The normalized H2O content in the plume mantle is similar to the concentrations of similarly incompatible La and Ce but lower than the concentrations of K2O, Cl, and Sr. This is at odds with the idea of wet mantle plumes. Three types of basaltic magmas corresponding to three types of plume sources (M1, M2, and M3) were distinguished. The concentrations of incompatible elements in these reservoirs were estimated using two models, assuming either an isochemical mantle or a moderately enriched composition of plume material. The latter model gave the following average concentrations of H2O, Cl, F, and S: 130, 33, 11, and 110 ppm for M1, 110, 12, 65, and 45 ppm for M2; 530, 29, 49, and 110 ppm for M3. The plume mantle is not homogeneous, and its heterogeneity is related to the existence of three main compositions, one of which (M1) is similar to the mantle of mid-ocean ridges, and two others (M2 and M3) are moderately enriched in K2O, TiO2, P2O5, F, and incompatible trace elements. The compositions of M2 and M3 are strongly different in H2O, Cl, and S contents. The M2 mantle reservoir is significantly poorer in these components and richer in incompatible trace elements than M3. The plume mantle was formed mainly by the mixing of three sources: ultradepleted mantle, moderately enriched relatively dry mantle, and moderately enriched H2O-rich mantle. In addition to the three main components of the plume mantle, there are probably minor components enriched in chlorine and depleted in fluorine. It is supposed that all these components are entrained into the plume mantle through the mantle recycling of components of the oceanic and continental crust. The established relationships are in agreement with the zonal model of a mantle plume, which includes a hot central part poor in H2O, Cl, and S; an outer part enriched in volatile and nonvolatile incompatible elements; and enclosing mantle material interacting with the plume.  相似文献

Based on the generalization of data on melt inclusions and quenched glasses, the average compositions of subduction (island arc and active continental margin settings) basic magmas were estimated. The main geochemical features of the average composition of these magmas are significant depletion in Nb and Ta, less significant depletion in Ti, Zr, and Sm, and enrichment in Cl, H2O, F, and P in the primitive mantlenormalized patterns. The average normalized contents of moderately incompatible HREE in these magmas are close to those in the basic magmas of other geodynamic settings. Subduction basic magmas exhibit negative correlation of Li, Y, Dy, Er, Yb, Lu, and Ti contents with MgO content. Most of incompatible elements (Nb, Ta, U, Th, LREE) do not correlate with MgO, but correlate with each other and K2O. Variations in element contents are related to crystallization differentiation, magma mixing, and possibly, participation of several sources. The water content in the island arc basic magmas varies from almost zero value to more than 6 wt %. Most compositions are characterized by weak negative correlation between H2O and MgO contents, but some compositions define a negative correlation close to that in magmas of mid-ocean ridges (MOR). Considered magmas demonstrate distinct positive correlation between MgO content and homogenization temperature, practically coinciding with that of MOR magmas. Modeling of phase equilibria revealed widening of crystallization field of olivine in the magmas of subduction zones compared to MOR magmas. This can be related to the high water content in subduction magmas. Simultaneous liquidus crystallization of olivine and clinopyroxene in subduction magmas occurs at pressure approximately 5 kbar higher than that of MOR magmas. Based on the average ratios of trace element to K2O content, we determined the average compositions for subduction magma sources. Relative to depleted mantle, they are enriched in all incompatible elements, with positive anomalies of U, Rb, Ba, B, Pb, Cl, H2O, F, and S, and negative anomalies of Th, K, Be, Nb, Ta, Li, Nd, Pb, and Ti. A general elevated content of incompatible elements indicates a reworking of the rocks of mantle wedge by fluids and melts that were released from the upper layers of subducted plate.  相似文献

Using our database of the compositions of melt inclusions and quenched glasses of basaltic magmas from mid-ocean ridges (MORB), the average concentrations and ratios of H2O, Cl, F, S, K2O, Ce, and Dy were determined in these magmas. Assuming that the concentration ratios of volatile components to K2O are constant in the MORB magmas and their sources (depleted mantle, DM), and taking an average K2O content in the DM of 72 ppm, the following average contents were estimated for the DM: 158 ppm H2O, 6.6 ppm Cl, and 8.3 ppm F. Using an S/Dy ratio of 212 for MORB melts and a Dy concentration of 0.531 ppm in the DM, the concentration of S in the DM was estimated as 113 ppm. Our value for the average content of Cl is much higher than estimates obtained by other authors. This discrepancy could be due either to the assimilation of crustal (and hydrospheric) Cl by MORB magmas or to the deep mantle recycling of Cl. The latter mechanism is supported by the statistically significant positive correlation of Cl with K2O, H2O, and F. Such a correlation is not consistent with the hypothesis of basaltic magma contamination by seawater-derived chloride brines. Similar to other surface processes, the assimilation of crustal material operates within the existing global correlations and disturbs them. Based on the average integrated degree of mantle melting and the average degree of MORB magma differentiation (0.05), the average contents of potassium and volatile components in N-MORB and E-MORB mantle sources were estimated as 39 and 126 ppm K2O, 103 and 197 ppm H2O, 4.0 and 10.7 ppm Cl, and 3.9 and 9.1 ppm F, respectively. It is not likely that normal MORB magmas can be derived from depleted mantle that experienced a previous partial melting event (for instance, during the extraction of the primordial continental crust in the Early Precambrian), which was referred to as the ultradepleted mantle. Ordinary (not ultradepleted) MORB magmas can be derived either by the melting of a zone enriched DM (for instance, progressively enriched in incompatible components with depth), which is hardly possible, or by the continuous addition (mixing) of an enriched component to the ultradepleted mantle at the expense of sediments and crustal materials involved in deep recycling.  相似文献

Major and trace element compositions were obtained for bulk rocks and melt inclusions hosted in olivine crystals (Fo > 85) from the adventive cones of the Piton de La Fournaise volcano (La Réunion Island). Ratios of highly incompatible trace elements for these magmas are used to identify the nature of the La Réunion mantle plume source. Although adventive cone lavas display unusual major element compositions compared to the historical lavas of the volcano (e.g., lower CaO/Al2O3), trace element data suggest that the magmas emitted by the adventive cones originate from a common chemical source. This source may correspond to either a homogeneous mixed source of different mantle components or a near-primitive less-differentiated mantle source. The melt inclusions display ratios of highly incompatible elements (e.g., Th/La, Nb/La) which are similar to primitive mantle values, and lower Nb/U ratios compared to most oceanic basalts. These results and previous isotopic and trace element data suggest that La Réunion plume samples a source which is intermediate between a primitive-like mantle domain and a slightly depleted one almost unaffected by the recycling processes. This source could have originated from early depletion of the primitive mantle. Assuming a depletion 4.45 Gyr ago, ~10% melting of this slightly depleted source could explain the enriched trace element concentrations of the melt inclusions.  相似文献

We present new data on mineralogical, major and trace element compositions of lavas from the northernmost segment of the Kolbeinsey Ridge (North Kolbeinsey Ridge, NKR). The incompatible element enriched North Kolbeinsey basalts lie on a crystal fractionation trend which differs from that of the other Kolbeinsey segments, most likely due to higher water contents (~0.2%) in the NKR basalts. The most evolved NKR magmas erupt close to the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone, implying increased cooling and fractionation of the ascending magmas. Mainly incompatible element-enriched basalts, as well as some slightly depleted lavas, erupt on the NKR. They show evidence for mixing between different mantle sources and magma mixing. North Kolbeinsey Ridge magmas probably formed by similar degrees of melting to other Kolbeinsey basalts, implying that no lateral variation in mantle potential temperature occurs on the spreading axis north of the Iceland plume and that the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone does not have a cooling effect on the mantle. Residual garnet from deep melting in garnet peridotite or from enriched garnet pyroxenite veins does not play a role. The incompatible element-enriched source has high Ba/La and Nb/Zr, but must be depleted in iron. The iron-depleted mantle is less dense than surrounding mantle and leads to the formation of the North Kolbeinsey segment and its shallow bathymetry. The enriched NKR source formed from a relatively refractory mantle, enriched by a small degree melt rather than by recycling of enriched basaltic crust. The depleted mantle source resembles the mantle of the Middle Kolbeinsey segment with a depletion in incompatible elements, but a fertile major element composition.  相似文献

We compiled a database containing more than 480000 determinations for 73 elements in melt inclusions in minerals and quenched glasses of volcanic rocks. These data were used to estimate the mean contents of major, volatile, and trace elements in igneous melts from main geodynamic settings. The following settings were distinguished: (I) oceanic spreading zones (mid-ocean ridges); (II) zones of mantle plume activity on oceanic plates (oceanic islands and plateaus); (III) and (IV) settings related to subduction processes, including (III) zones of island-arc magmatism generated on the oceanic crust and (IV) magmatic zones of active continental margins involving the continental crust into magma generation processes; (V) intracontinental rifts and continental hot spots; and (VI) back-arc spreading centers. The histogram of SiO2 contents in the natural igneous melts of all geodynamic settings exhibits a bimodal distribution with two maxima at SiO2 contents of 50–52 wt % and 72–74 wt %. The range 62–64 wt % SiO2 comprises the minimum number of determinations. Primitive mantle-normalized spidergrams were constructed for average contents of elements in the igneous melts of basic, intermediate, and acidic compositions from settings I–V. The diagrams reflect the characteristic features of melt compositions for each geodynamic setting. On the basis of the analysis of data on the composition of melt inclusions and glasses of rocks, average ratios of incompatible trace and volatile components (H2O/Ce, K2O/Cl, Nb/U, Ba/Rb, Ce/Pb, etc.) were estimated for the igneous melts of all of the settings. Variations of these ratios were determined, and it was shown that, in most cases, the ratios of incompatible elements are significantly different between settings. The difference is especially pronounced for the ratios of elements with different degrees of incompatibility (e.g., Nb/Yb) and for some ratios with volatile components (e.g., K2O/H2O).  相似文献

Based on the compositions of melt inclusions and coexisting minerals from meymechites and alkali picrites, the temperatures and pressures of the ascending material of the Siberian plume were estimated at the level of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. The melts trapped in olivine show high contents of titanium and other incompatible elements. The rocks crystallized under high oxygen fugacity conditions. The calculated compositions of primary magmas are similar to the compositions of near-solidus melts derived from a dry fertile lherzolite at 7 GPa. The estimated potential temperature is close to 1650°C, which is much higher than the potential temperature of plumes that generate the primary basaltic magmas of mid-ocean ridges. The obtained data show that, during the activity of the giant magma-generating system of the Siberian trap province, hot peridotite masses ascended probably from the core-mantle boundary up to the base of the continental lithosphere. Our results are at odds with the suggestion that the basalt flows of the Siberian and other large igneous provinces are not related to mantle plumes.  相似文献

High-Mg, low-Ti volcanic rocks from the Manihiki Plateau in the Western Pacific share many geochemical characteristics with subduction-related boninites such as high-Ca boninites from the Troodos ophiolite on Cyprus, which are believed to originate by hydrous re-melting of previously depleted mantle. In this paper we compare the Manihiki rocks and Troodos boninites using a new dataset on the major and trace element composition of whole rocks and glasses from these locations, and new high-precision, electron microprobe analyses of olivine and Cr-spinel in these rocks. Our results show that both low-Ti Manihiki rocks and Troodos boninites could originate by re-melting of a previously depleted lherzolite mantle source (20–25% of total melting with 8–10% melting during the first stage), as indicated by strong depletion of magmas in more to less incompatible elements (Sm/Yb < 0.8, Zr/Y < 2, Ti/V < 12) and high-Cr-spinel compositions (Cr# > 0.5). In comparison with Troodos boninites, the low-Ti Manihiki magmas had distinctively lower H2O contents (< 0.2 vs. > 2 wt% in boninites), ~ 100 °C higher liquidus temperatures at a given olivine Fo-number, lower fO2 (ΔQFM < + 0.2 vs. ΔQFM > + 0.2) and originated from deeper and hotter mantle (1.4–1.7 GPa, ~ 1440 °C vs. 0.8–1.0 GPa, ~ 1300 °C for Troodos boninites). The data provide new evidence that re-melting of residual upper mantle is not only restricted to subduction zones, where it occurs under hydrous conditions, but can also take place due to interaction of previously depleted upper mantle with mantle plumes from the deep and hotter Earth interior.  相似文献

Based on isotopic and geochemical data for Late Riphean dikes and sills and for Devonian dolerite dikes and basalt covers within the Sette-Daban rift in the western part of the Siberian platform, we proved conceptions about the participation of various deep sources in their formation. The inverse correlation in Devonian basites between concentrations of Nb, light rare earth elements, and a number of other highly incompatible elements on the one hand and Zr, Y, and other moderate incompatible elements, including heavy rare earth elements on the other hand allows us to assume that two sources participated in the formation of melts. The source of dolerites is close to the EMORB type, and the source of basalts is close to the OIB type. The compositions of Riphean rocks correspond to a trend for which magma formation occurred with the participation of a source with characteristics between NMORB and EMORB and also a component typical of subduction zones. The data obtained imply associate formation of basites with the influence of mantle plumes on the lithosphere of the southeastern part of the Siberian craton in the Late Riphean and Middle Paleozoic. In the Riphean the plume mantle was composed of a moderately depleted mantle of the EMODB type and a mantle with the composition close to the above-subduction mantle, which was metosomatically changed under the influence of fluid water, which caused the appearance of a Nb and Ta deficit in melting products. The isotopic characteristics Nd(147Sm/144Nd = 0.165 and ɛNd(T) ∼ 2.3–4.7) of rocks show the moderate depleted nature of these sources.  相似文献

The Marquesas Archipelago, a volcanic chain in French Polynesia (south-central Pacific Ocean), is predominantly composed of alkalic, transitional and tholeiitic basalts. The variation trends in these intraplate basaltic rocks imply that the magmas were derived from different upper mantle sources. Model calculations using the total inverse method show that the peridotite source of most Marquesas basalts was enriched in incompatible elements compared to a primordial mantle and had higher than chondritic ratios of several elements such as La/Yb, Ti/V and P/Ce. A metasomatic enrichment event is suggested by the sequence of element enrichment in the source relative to the primordial mantle (Ba>Nb>La>Ce>Sr>Sm>Eu> Zr>Hf>Ti>Y>Yb). On the other hand, some lavas including tholeiites of Ua Pou and alkalic basalts of Hiva Oa, were probably derived from relatively depleted upper mantle. In some islands such as Hatutu, the different types of basalts were generated from sources with rather similar compositions. The residual phases of the Marquesas magmas included garnet. The sources of these magmas were similar in trace element chemistry to the oceanic mantle below Hawaii.  相似文献

The incompatible element signatures of volcanic rocks formingJeju Island, located at the eastern margin of the Asian continent, are identical to those of typical intraplate magmas. The sourceof these volcanic rocks may be a mantle plume, located immediatelybehind the SW Japan arc. Jeju plume magmas can be divided intothree series, based on major and trace element abundances: high-aluminaalkalic, low-alumina alkalic, and sub-alkalic. Mass-balancecalculations indicate that the compositional variations withineach magma series are largely governed by fractional crystallizationof three chemically distinct parental magmas. The compositionsof primary magmas for these series, using inferred residualmantle olivine compositions, suggest that the low-alumina alkalicand sub-alkalic magmas are generated at the deepest and shallowestdepths by lowest and highest degrees of melting, respectively. These estimates, together with systematic differences in traceelement and isotopic compositions, indicate that the upper mantlebeneath Jeju Island is characterized by an increased degreeof metasomatism and a change in major metasomatic hydrous mineralsfrom amphibole to phlogopite with decreasing depth. The originalplume material, having rather depleted geochemical characteristics, entrained shallower metasomatized uppermost mantle material, and segregated least-enriched low-alumina alkalic, moderatelyenriched high-alumina alkalic, and highly enriched sub-alkalicmagmas, with decreasing depth. Statistical analysis of a data bank of the compositions of glasses and melt inclusions in minerals from ocean-island basalts. The initial database contains more than 45 000 published analyses of ocean-island igneous rocks from around the world. Much attention was given to the contents of volatiles (H2O, Cl, F, and S) and their ratios to one another and to nonvolatile components of close incompatibility (Ti, P, K, and Ce). The average compositions of melt inclusions are similar to those of glasses of the rocks, including volatiles, with consideration for a somewhat higher degree (by approximately 20%) of the differentiation of glasses. The average compositions of ocean-island melts differ from those of mid-ocean basalts in having wider variations and elevated contents of some of the most incompatible elements (Sr, Nb, Ta, Ba, U, Th, and others), as well as H2O, F, and Cl. Based on the correlation of volatiles to one another and to incompatible elements, three groups of ocean-island basalts are distinguished: (I) low-K, P, Ti magma compositions approximating mid-ocean ridge magmas, (II) high-K, Ce, P, and Ti magmas that resemble continental rift magmas but differ from them in low H2O content, and (III) high-K, H2O, Ce, P, and Ti magmas close to continental rift magma. All three types of the melts were found only in the Hawaiian Archipelago, whereas other ocean islands are dominated by any one of these types. The distinguished melt types presumably reflect the differences (heterogeneity) in the compositions of the sources.  相似文献

Rocks of two distinctly different magma series are found in a ∼4000-m-thick sequence of lavas and tuffs in the Maymecha River basin which is part of the Siberian flood-volcanic province. The tholeiites are typical low-Ti continental flood basalts with remarkably restricted, petrologically evolved compositions. They have basaltic MgO contents, moderate concentrations of incompatible trace elements, moderate fractionation of incompatible from compatible elements, distinct negative Ta(Nb) anomalies, and Nd values of 0 to +2. The primary magmas were derived from a relatively shallow mantle source, and evolved in large crustal magma chambers where they acquired their relatively uniform compositions and became contaminated with continental crust. An alkaline series, in contrast, contains a wide range of rock types, from meymechite and picrite to trachytes, with a wide range of compositions (MgO from 0.7 to 38 wt%, SiO2 from 40 to 69 wt%, Ce from 14 to 320 ppm), high concentrations of incompatible elements and extreme fractionation of incompatible from compatible elements (Al2O3/TiO2∼1; Sm/Yb up to 11). These rocks lack Ta(Nb) anomalies and have a broad range of Nd values, from −2 to +5. The parental magmas are believed to have formed by low-degree melting at extreme mantle depths (>200 km). They bypassed the large crustal magma chambers and ascended rapidly to the surface, a consequence, perhaps, of high volatile contents in the primary magmas. The tholeiitic series dominates the lower part of the sequence and the alkaline series the upper part; at the interface, the two types are interlayered. The succession thus provides evidence of a radical change in the site of mantle melting, and the simultaneous operation of two very different crustal plumbing systems, during the evolution of this flood-volcanic province. New H2O, CO2 and S concentration data for basaltic glasses fromLoihi seamount, Hawaii, allow us to model degassing, assimilation, and the distribution of major volatiles within and around theHawaiian plume. Degassing and assimilation have affected CO2and Cl but not H2O concentrations in most Loihi glasses. Waterconcentrations relative to similarly incompatible elements inHawaiian submarine magmas are depleted (Loihi), equivalent (Kilauea,North Arch, Kauai–Oahu), or enriched (South Arch). H2O/Ceratios are uncorrelated with major element composition or extentor depth of melting, but are related to position relative tothe Hawaiian plume and mantle source region composition, consistentwith a zoned plume model. In front of the plume core, overlyingmantle is metasomatized by hydrous partial melts derived fromthe Hawaiian plume. Downstream from the plume core, lavas tapa depleted source region with H2O/Ce similar to enriched Pacificmid-ocean ridge basalt. Within the plume core, mantle components, thought to represent subducted oceanic lithosphere, have waterenrichments equivalent to (KEA) or less than (KOO) that of Ce.Lower H2O/Ce in the KOO component may reflect efficient dehydrationof the subducting oceanic crust and sediments during recyclinginto the deep mantle. The South Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR) 19°S segment, approximately located along the line of Saint Helena volcanic chain (created by Saint Helena mantle plume), is an ideal place to investigate the issue whether the ridge-hotpot interaction process affected the whole MAR. In this study, we present major and trace elemental compositions and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic ratios of twenty fresh lava samples concentrated in a relatively small area in the SMAR 19°S segment. Major oxides compositions show that all samples are tholeiite. Low contents of compatible trace elements (e.g., Ni = 239–594 ppm and Cr = 456–1010 ppm) and low Fe/Mn (54–67) and Ce/Yb (0.65–1.5) ratios of these lavas show that their parental magmas are partially melted by a spinel lherzolite mantle source. Using software PRIMELT3, this study obtained mantle potential temperatures (Tp) beneath the segment of 1321–1348 °C, which is lower relative to those ridges influenced by mantle plumes. The asthenospheric mantle beneath the SMAR 19°S segment starts melting at a depth of ~63 km and ceases melting at ~43 km with a final melting temperature of ~1265 °C. The extent of partial melting is up to 16%–17.6% with an average adiabatic decompression value of 2.6%/kbar. The correlations of major oxides (CaO/Al2O3) and trace elements (Cr, Co, V) with MgO and Zr show that the parental magma experienced olivine and plagioclase fractional crystallization during its ascent to the surface.87Sr/86Sr (0.702398–0.702996), 143Nd/144Nd (0.513017–0.513177) and 206Pb/204Pb (18.444–19.477) ratios of these lavas indicate the mantle source beneath the SMAR 19°S segment is composed of a three-component mixture of depleted MORB mantle, PREMA mantle, and HIMU mantle materials. The simple, binary mixing results among components from plume-free SMAR MORB, Saint Helena plume and Tristan plume show that asthenospheric mantle beneath the SMAR 19°S segment may be polluted by both Saint Helena and Tristan plume enriched materials. The abovementioned mantle potential temperatures, together with the low Saint Helena (<10%) and Tristan (<5%) components remaining in the asthenospheric mantle at present, show that the physically ridge-hotspot interactions at SMAR 19°S segment may have ceased. However, the trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopically binary mixing calculation results imply that these lavas tapped some enriched pockets left when Saint Helena and/or Tristan plume were once on the SMAR during earlier Atlantic rifted history.  相似文献

The dike-vein complex of the Moncha Tundra Massif comprises dolerites, gabbro-pegmatites, and aplites. The dolerite dikes are classified into three groups: high-Ti ferrodolerites, ferrodolerites, low-Ti and low-Fe gabbro-dolerites. The U-Pb age of the ferrodolerites is 2505 ± 8 Ma, and the amphibole-plagioclase metagabbroids hosting a ferrodolerite dike are dated at 2516 ± 12 Ma. Data on the U-Pb isotopic system of zircon from the gabbro-pegmatites and titanite from the aplites indicate that the late magmatic evolution of the Moncha Tundra Massif proceeded at 2445 ± 1.7 Ma, and the youngest magmatic events in the massif related to the Svecofennian orogeny occurred at 1900 ± 9 Ma. The data obtained on the Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic systems and the distribution of trace elements and REE in rocks of the dike-vein complex of the massifs provide insight into the composition of the sources from which the parental magmas were derived. The high-Ti ferrodolerites were melted out of a deep-sitting plume source that contained an asthenospheric component. The ferrodolerites were derived from a mantle MORB-type source that contained a crustal component. The parental melts of the gabbro-dolerites were melted out of the lithospheric mantle depleted in incompatible elements after Archean crust-forming processes above an ascending mantle plume, with the participation of a crustal component. The gabbro-dolerites and the rocks of the layered complex of the Moncha Tundra Massif exhibit similar geochemical characteristics, which suggest that their parental melts could be derived from similar sources but with more clearly pronounced crustal contamination of the parental melts of the rocks of the massif itself. The geochemical traits of the gabbro-pegmatites are thought to be explained not only by the enrichment of the residual magmas in trace elements and a contribution of a crustal component but also by the uneven effect of sublithospheric mantle sources. Compositions of melt inclusions in olivine (Fo90-64) from 11 localities in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Cost Rica along the Central American Volcanic Arc are used to constrain combined systematics of major and trace elements and volatile components (H2O, S, Cl, F) in parental melts and to estimate volcanic fluxes of volatile elements. The melt inclusions cover the entire range of compositions reported for whole rocks from Central America. They point to large heterogeneity of magma sources on local and regional scales, related to variable contributions of diverse crustal (from the subducting and overriding plates) and mantle (from the wedge and incoming plate) components involved in magma genesis. Water in parental melts correlates inversely with Ti, Y and Na and positively with Ba/La and B/La (with the exception of Irazú Volcano), which indicates mantle melting fluxed by Ba-, B- and H2O-rich, possibly, serpentinite-derived fluid beneath most parts of the arc. Different components with melt-like characteristics (high LREE, La/Nb and probably also Cl, S and F and low Ba/La) control the geochemical peculiarities of Guatemalan and Costa Rican magmas. The composition of parental magmas together with published data on volcanic volumes and total SO2 flux from satellite measurements are used to constrain fluxes of volatile components and to estimate total magmatic flux in Central America. We found that volcanic flux accounts for only 13% of total magmatic and volatile fluxes. The remaining 87% of magmas remained in the lithosphere to form cumulates (∼39%) and intrusives (∼48%). The intrusive fraction of magmatic flux may be significantly larger beneath Nicaragua compared to Costa Rica. Interestingly, total fluxes of magmas and volatiles in Central America are quite similar to the global average estimates.
