We have studied the dynamics in the sunspot transition region between the chromosphere and the corona and investigated the extension of the flow field into the corona. Based on EUV spectra of a medium size sunspot and its surroundings, NOAA 7981, observed with CDS and SUMER on SOHO, we derive line-of-sight velocities and study the line profiles for a series of emission lines. The flow field in the low corona is found to differ markedly from that in the transition region. In the transition region the relative line-of-sight velocity shows an upflow in the umbra and relatively large areas with downflow that cover part of the penumbra. The spatial extent of these areas with upflow and downflow increases with increasing temperature in the transition region, but the whole flow field changes character as the temperature increases from the upper transition region to the low corona. Based on a calibration of the SUMER wavelength scale we find that the entire sunspot transition zone appears to be moving downwards towards the chromosphere. The relation between this finding and the general tendency for transition-region lines to show a net red shift is discussed.Several of the transition-region spectral line profiles are observed to show two line components with Gaussian shape and line-of-sight velocities that differ markedly. Several of the line profiles that are composed of two spectral line components occur close to the dividing line between up- and downflow. A discussion of this observation is presented. In small regions with spatial extent of a few arc sec we detect enhanced continuum emission underlying explosive events. The similarities between explosive events with continuum emission and the moustaches observed in H close to sunspots are so striking that we are tempted to introduce the notation transition-region moustaches.  相似文献

EUV spectra of a medium-size sunspot and its surroundings, NOAA 7981, were obtained on 2 August 1996 with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The spectral lines formed in the transition region and corona show considerable structure and large deviations from a uniform spatial distribution over the active region. Enhanced EUV emissions in transition region lines are concentrated in small regions outside the umbra of the sunspot throughout most of the observing sequence. Only during a short, active period do we find an enhanced line emission that reaches into the umbra. Preliminary values for the umbral intensity are given.Marked changes are detected between the spatial distribution of line emission in the transition region and the low corona. The difference is not limited to cool and hot non-flaring loops not being cospatial, but includes differences both regarding the time variability and the orientation and size of the emission features. Whereas both rapid ( 4 and 2 min) and slow ( 10 and 12 h) temporal variations are found in the chromosphere (Hei 584 Ú) and transition region (Ov 629 Ú), the response in the low corona (Mgix 368 Ú) is slow ( 5 h). Furthermore, marked differences between the spatial distributions in the Mgviii 315 Ú, Mgix 368 Ú lines formed in the low corona and the coronal Fexiv 334 Ú, Fexvi 360 Ú lines are detected.  相似文献

On 1 July 1971, about ten groups of type III bursts were observed with high time resolution (10?1 sec) with the 169 MHz Nançay radioheliograph. Each group consists of two or several bursts, appearing successively from E to W in all cases, with very short delays. The analysis of successive E-W profiles allowed us to show that, for each event:
  1. the delay between maximum times of the sources was in the range 0.3–0.8 s and that their time profiles were very similar.
  2. the mutual distance between sources was ~1.5 × 105 km.
Explanations by simultaneous emission at the fundamental and harmonic of the local plasma frequency, or by reflexion of electromagnetic radiations at boundary at a dense region are shown to be inconsistent with the observations. We suggest that distinct exciters are simultaneously accelerated at low levels in very close regions and propagate upward along very widely diverging magnetic field lines. This divergence could be related to the existence of large scale magnetic connexions in the corona as revealed by XUV observations. We stress the point that this kind of structure in type III bursts groups, visible only with high time resolution, may have led in the past to erroneous conclusions concerning diameter and decay time of type III bursts because of both spatial and temporal overlapping.  相似文献

The results of the analysis of the full Stokes profiles of the photospheric lines Fe I λ 630.15 nm and Fe I λ 630.25 nm in a region of chromospheric dual flows appearance in the vicinity of a small pore are presented. The analysis is based on the spectropolarimetric observations of the active region NOAA 11024 with the THEMIS French–Italian telescope (Tenerife Island, Spain). The temporal variations in the high-resolution Stokes parameters I, Q, U, and V were considered for each pixel. It was found that the dual chromospheric flows appeared in the region of the abnormal Stokes profiles of the photospheric lines. Most of the Stokes profiles Q, U, and V have a complex shape and vary greatly from pixel to pixel, which indicates strong inhomogeneities in the structure of the magnetic field in that region. The amplitude and shape of the Stokes profiles were rapidly changing during the observations. A change in the polarity of the photospheric magnetic field took place during the observations in the region of a bright chromospheric point. The evidence of the emergence of a new small-scale magnetic flux of the opposite polarity is obtained; this could lead to magnetic reconnections, appearance of dual chromospheric flows, and occurrence of a microflare.  相似文献

The abundance of helium relative to hydrogen is spectroscopically determined in prominences and in the chromosphere by using 1952, 1958, 1962 and 1966 eclipse data. Care is taken in the intensity calibration of emission lines, the self-absorption, and the departure from local thermodynamic equilibrium. We find from the line profiles and intensities of prominences and the chromosphere that the neutral helium lines are emitted in the metal-hydrogen emitting region where the kinetic temperature is low enough, 6000 8000 K, so that only the ionization due to UV radiation from the corona can explain the intensity of neutral helium emission. Also we find that the intensity ratio of Hei 3888.65 to H8 3889.05 increases towards the upper boundaries of prominences and of the chromosphere and that it approaches to a universal limiting value, both in various prominences or in the chromosphere, where it is considered that the ionization of neutral helium and hydrogen is nearly complete. From these facts the helium to hydrogen number ratio is found to be 6.5 ± 1.5%.A new schematic model of the chromosphere is presented where spicules have no hot region of emitting neutral helium lines. Here it is suggested that the kinetic temperature of spicules, 6000 8000 K, would be primarily determined by the radiation temperature of the corona and the transition region beyond the Lyman continuum of hydrogen which happens to be around those temperatures.  相似文献

During the total solar eclipse of 11 June, 1983, an imaging dual-channel Fabry-Pérot interferometer was used to obtain line profiles simultaneously in the green 5303 Å [Fe xiv] and the red 6374 Å [Fe x] coronal lines at various positions in the corona. Extensive microdensitometry followed by multi-Gaussian curve-fitting analysis has resulted in the determination of coronal temperatures and velocity separations between different pockets of coronal gas in the line of sight over a large extent of the corona. Fewer high temperature zones are to be found in the corona of 1983 compared with our similar green-line measurements of the solar maximum corona of 1980. The data are consistent with a temperature maximum occurring at 1.2 R , as found at the 1980 eclipse, but our new data are insufficient to observe farther out than this radius and so determine the position of a maximum. The velocity field in the corona at the 1983 eclipse is less structured compared with that at the 1980 eclipse and is mainly confined to the zone 20–30km s–1.  相似文献

Metric and decimetric type III bursts and microwave spike emissions with negative and positive frequency drift rates which were observed with radio spectrometers at Yunnan and Beijing Observatories are presented. The frequencies and heights at which the bidirectional electron beams originated are estimated. Three events reveal a separatrix frequency (at 250, 1300, and 2900 MHz) between normal- and reverse-drifting radio bursts, indicating a compact acceleration source where electron beams are injected in both upward and downward directions. These cases may indicate that the changeover frequencies of bidirectional electron beams are within a large band from 250 to 2900 MHz and the frequency bands of separatrices are in very small (4 to 100 MHz) and different bands. These type III bursts appear to be a plasma emission phenomenon from a beam of electrons which seem to have widely separated acceleration regions from the high to the low corona. These cases suggest that current sheets that separate open and closed magnetic fluxes in the low corona, and oppositely directed open field lines in the high corona are possible sites for bidirectional electron acceleration. The regions of magnetic topology from closed to open magnetic field structures should be very large (from about 20000 to 107000 km above the photosphere).  相似文献

EUV spectra obtained with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) show significant flows of plasma in active region loops, both at coronal and transition region temperatures. Wavelength shifts in the coronal lines Mgix 368 Å and Mgx 624 Å corresponding to upflows in the plasma reaching velocities of 50 km s-1 have been observed in an active region. Smaller velocities are detected in the coronal lines Fexvi 360 Å and Sixii 520 Å. Flows reaching 100 km s-1 are observed in spectral lines formed at transition region temperatures, i.e., Ov 629 Å and Oiii 599 Å, demonstrating that both the transition region and the corona are clearly dynamic in nature. Some high velocity events show even higher velocities with line profiles corresponding to a velocity dispersion of 300–400 km s-1. Even in the quiet Sun there are velocity fluctuations of 20 km s-1 in transition region lines. Velocities of the magnitude presented in this paper have never previously been observed in coronal lines except in explosive events and flares. Thus, the preliminary results from the CDS spectrometer promise to put constraints on existing models of the flows and energy balance in the solar atmosphere. The present results are compared to previous attempts to observe flows in the corona.  相似文献

We present results from a study of the spatial distributions of line emission and relative line-of-sight velocity in the atmosphere above 17 sunspot regions, from the chromosphere, through the transition region and into the corona, based on simultaneous observations of ten EUV emission lines with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer – CDS on SOHO. We find that the spatial distributions are nonuniform over the sunspot region and introduce the notation 'sunspot loop' to describe an enhanced transition region emission feature that looks like a magnetic loop, extending from inside the sunspot to the surrounding regions. We find little evidence for the siphon flow. Attention is given to the time variations since we observe both a rapid variation with a characteristic time of a few to several minutes and a slow variation with a time constant of several hours to 1 day. The most prominent features in the transition region intensity maps are the sunspot plumes. We introduce an updated criterion for the presence of plumes and find that 15 out of 17 sunspots contain a plume in the temperature range logT5.2–5.6. The relative line-of-sight velocity in sunspot plumes is high and directed into the Sun in the transition region. Almost all the sunspot regions contain one or a few prominent, strongly redshifted velocity channels, several of the channels extend from the sunspot plume to considerable distances from the sunspot. The flow appears to be maintained by plasmas at transition region temperatures, moving from regions located at a greater height outside the sunspots and towards the sunspot. The spatial correlation is high to moderate between emission lines formed in the transition region lines, but low between the transition region lines and the coronal lines. From detailed comparisons of intensity and velocity maps we find transition region emission features without any sign of coronal emission in the vicinity. A possible explanation is that the emission originates in magnetic flux tubes that are too cold to emit coronal emission. The comparisons suggest that gas at transition region temperature occur in loops different from loops with coronal temperature. However, we cannot exclude the presence of transition region temperatures close to the footpoints of flux tubes emitting at coronal temperatures. Regions with enhanced transition region line emission tend to be redshifted, but the correlation between line emission and relative line-of-sight velocity is weak. We extend our conditional probability studies and confirm that there is a tendency for line profiles with large intensities and red shifts (blue shifts) above the average to constitute an increasing (decreasing) fraction of the profiles as the wavelength shift increases.  相似文献

EUV observations show many active region loops in lines formed at temperatures between 104K and 2×l06K. The brightest loops are associated with flux tubes leading to the umbrae of sunspots. It is shown that the high visibility of certain loops in transition region lines is due principallly to a sharp radial decrease of temperature to chromospheric values toward the loop axis. The plasma density of these cool loops is not significantly greater than in the hot gas immediately surrounding it. Consequently, the internal gas pressure of the cool material is clearly lower. The hot material immediately surrounding the cool loops is generally denser than the external corona by a factor 3–4. When the active region is examined in coronal lines, this hot high pressure plasma shows up as loops that are generally parallel to the cool loops but significantly displaced laterally. In general the loop phenomenon in an active region is the result of temperature variations by two orders of magnitude and density variations of around a factor five between adjacent flux tubes in the corona.  相似文献

Temperatures and temperature gradients for the outer corona are obtained from brightness gradients of EUV lines that were measured with the spectroheliograph on OSO-7. Brightness gradients show considerable deviations from isothermal model calculations that include collisional excitation and photoexcitation. A negative temperature gradient that gives both positive and negative ion abundance gradients appears to be able to account for the discrepancy. For 284 of Fe xv, perhaps the strongest line from the outer corona, measurements during 1972 appear to be consistent with (i) a temperature near 2.3×106K near the equator at = 1.3±0.1 solar radii from the solar center; (ii) (/T) dT/d values near -0.7 that extend from as low as = 1.2 to about = 1.8. Temperatures from strong lines of Fe xiv and Fe xvi indicate that variations of about ±0.2×106K exist along lines of sight where emission is appreciable. There appears to be some agreement between these results and temperature measurements from ion abundances in the solar wind and Doppler width of 5303.  相似文献

Existing models of the quiet chromosphere-corona transition region predict a distribution of emission measure over temperature that agrees with observation for T 105 K. These network models assume that all magnetic field lines that emerge from the photosphere extend into and are in thermal contact with the corona. We show that the observed fine-scale structure of the photospheric magnetic network instead suggests a two-component picture in which magnetic funnels that open into the corona emerge from only a fraction of the network. The gas that makes up the hotter transition region is mostly contained within these funnels, as in standard models, but, because the funnels are more constricted in our picture, the heat flowing into the cooler transition region from the corona is reduced by up to an order of magnitude. The remainder of the network is occupied by a population of low-lying loops with lengths 104 km. We propose that the cooler transition region is mainly located within such loops, which are magnetically insulated from the corona and must, therefore, be heated internally. The fine-scale structure of ultraviolet spectroheliograms is consistent with this proposal, and theoretical models of internally heated loops can explain the behavior of the emission measure below T 105 K.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The 3-min oscillations in the sunspot atmosphere are discussed, based on joint observing with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer – TRACE and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory – SOHO. We find that the oscillation amplitude above the umbra increases with increasing temperature, reaches a maximum for emission lines formed close to 1–2× 105 K, and decreases for higher temperatures. Oscillations observed with a high signal-to-noise ratio show deviations from pure linear oscillations. The results do not support the sunspot filter theory, based on the idea of a chromospheric resonator. Whereas the filter theory predicts several resonant peaks in the power spectra, equally spaced 1 mHz in frequency, the observed power spectra show one dominating peak, close to 6 mHz. Spectral observations show that the transition region lines contribute less than 13 percent to the TRACE 171 Å channel intensity above the umbra. The 3-min oscillations fill the sunspot umbra in the transition region. In the corona the oscillations are concentrated to smaller regions that appear to coincide with the endpoints of sunspot coronal loops, suggesting that wave propagation along the magnetic field makes it possible for the oscillations to reach the corona.  相似文献

On 21 September 1996, a filament close to an area of enhanced network was observed with the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) spectrometer and Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS). CDS provided intensity, Doppler shift and linewidth maps of the region in six lines whose temperature range covers 104 to 106 K. SUMER observations consisted of maps of the region in four hydrogen Lyman lines (L, L, L-6, L-7) and a Svi line (944 Å). In all the Lyman lines we detect a central absorption and an asymmetry in the intensity of the two peaks. First NLTE computations indicate that such reversed Lyman profiles and their absolute intensities can be reproduced with the existing filament models provided that we take into account a prominence-corona transition region (PCTR). We discuss the Lyman lines' asymmetry in terms of macroscopic flows by comparison with the Hei line Doppler shifts observed with CDS.  相似文献

Magnetic reconnection at the photospheric boundary is an essential part of some theories for prominence formation. We consider a simple model for reconnection in this region. Parameters of the reconnecting current sheet are expressed in terms of the concentration and temperature of the outside dense and cold plasma, magnetic field intensity, and velocity of convective flows at the photosphere. The reconnection process is shown to be most efficient in a layer several hundred kilometers thick coinciding with the temperature minimum region of the solar atmosphere. The calculated upward flux of matter through the current sheet ( 1011–1012 g s–1) is amply sufficient for prominence formation in the upper chromosphere or lower corona.  相似文献

The temperature structure of the transition region between the chromosphere and corona is discussed in the context of current ideas about magnetic fields in these layers. Magnetic channeling of the downward conductive heat flow from the corona into the regions of enhanced field at the supergranulation boundaries is proposed as a mechanism for explaining the measured intensities of solar ultraviolet emission lines which originate in layers with temperatures below 105 °K. It is shown that nearly all of the observed ultraviolet line emission originates in interspicule regions, and that this emission plays an important part in the energy balance of the cooler layers of the transition region. It is suggested that certain motions observed in the upper chromosphere may represent the earliest visual evidence for conversion of inflowing conduction energy into kinetic motions. On leave from the Observatory Sonnenborgh at Utrecht, The Netherlands.  相似文献

The flash spectrograms obtained at the June 30, 1973 eclipse contain the monochromatic images of a coronal condensation in three coronal lines of Fexiv 5303, Fex 6374 and Fexi 7892 and Hα line. The assumption of the axially-symmetric distribution of the emissivity in the coronal lines allows us to find the density and temperature structure of the coronal condensation. While the electron density in the central axis of the condensation is about ten times as high as that of the normal corona at each height, the temperature is not so high (T?2.3×106K). This seems to be a representative nature of a coronal active region in the post maximum phase of activity. It is found that there exists a cool and dense core (T = 106K, N e =6 × 109 cm-3 at 17000 km) at the lower part of the coronal condensation, which is in a close geometrical coincidence with the small active prominence protruding from the underlying plage region.  相似文献

The instrument SUMER - Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation is designed to investigate structures and associated dynamical processes occurring in the solar atmosphere, from the chromosphere through the transition region to the inner corona, over a temperature range from 104 to 2 × 106 K and above. These observations will permit detailed spectroscopic diagnostics of plasma densities and temperatures in many solar features, and will support penetrating studies of underlying physical processes, including plasma flows, turbulence and wave motions, diffusion transport processes, events associated with solar magnetic activity, atmospheric heating, and solar wind acceleration in the inner corona. Specifically, SUMER will measure profiles and intensities of EUV lines; determine Doppler shifts and line broadenings with high accuracy; provide stigmatic images of the Sun in the EUV with high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution; and obtain monochromatic maps of the full Sun and the inner corona or selected areas thereof. SUMER will be flown on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), scheduled for launch in November, 1995. This paper has been written to familiarize solar physicists with SUMER and to demonstrate some command procedures for achieving certain scientific observations.  相似文献

The profiles of the Fe xiv, 5303, and Fe x, 6374, emission lines of the solar corona have been observed at different positions using a photoelectric scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. These profiles were obtained during the eclipse of 7th March 1970, in Mexico and at the Pic-du-Midi coronagraph in October, 1970. The half-widths of these profiles were determined for both the coronal lines and temperatures were derived from these widths. No systematic temperature variation was discovered, however there was some suggestion of the existence of a fluctuation with time in the width of the emission lines.  相似文献

The solar wind ions flowing outward through the solar corona generally have their ionic fractions freeze-in within 5 solar radii. The altitude where the freeze-in occurs depends on the competition between two time scales: the time over which the wind flows through a density scale height, and the time over which the ions achieve ionization equilibrium. Therefore, electron temperature, electron density, and the velocity of the ions are the three main physical quantities which determine the freeze-in process, and thus the solar wind ionic charge states. These physical quantities are determined by the heating and acceleration of the solar wind, as well as the geometry of the expansion. In this work, we present a parametric study of the electron temperature profile and velocities of the heavy ions in the inner solar corona. We use the ionic charge composition data observed by the SWICS experiment on Ulysses during the south polar pass to derive empirically the electron temperature profile in the south polar coronal hole. We find that the electron temperature profile in the solar inner corona is well constrained by the solar wind charge composition data. The data also indicate that the electron temperature profile must have a maximum within 2 solar radii. We also find that the velocities of heavy ions in their freeze-in regions are small (<100 km s-1) and different elements must flow at different velocities in the inner corona.  相似文献
