We report optical time‐resolved photometry of the CRTS transient CSS091109:035759+102943. Pronounced orbital variability with a 114 min period, large X‐ray variability and the IR to X‐ray spectral energy distribution suggest a classification as a magnetic cataclysmic binary, a likely AM Herculis star or polar (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A comparative study of the evolution of the Sun–Jupiter–Asteroid system near the 4:1 and 7:2 resonances is performed by means of two techniques that proceed differently from the Hamiltonian corresponding to the planar restricted elliptic three-body problem. One technique is based on the classical Schubart averaging while the other is based on a mapping method in which the perturbing part of the Hamiltonian is expanded and the resulting terms are ordered according to a weight function that depends on the powers of eccentricities and the coefficients of the terms. For the mapping method the effect of Saturn on the asteroidal evolution is introduced and the degree of chaos is estimated by means of the Lyapunov time. Both methods are shown to lead to similar results and can be considered a suitable tool for describing the evolution of asteroids in the Kirkwood gap and the group corresponding to the 4:1 and 7:2 Jovian resonances, respectively. The European Near Earth Asteroid Research (EURONEAR) is a project which envisions to build a coordinated network which will follow-up and recover potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) and near earth asteroids (NEAs). We aim to include in EURONEAR two automated 1 m telescopes located in Chile and Europe, in addition to other non-permanent facilities. Astrometry will be the main aim of the project in order to secure and follow-up newly discovered NEAs, also to recover PHAs at their second or following oppositions, while photometry of bright PHAs will bring information on their physical properties. In this paper, first we review briefly the existent and past NEAs programs. Next, we include the results obtained in 2006 from three observing runs at Pic du Midi using the 1 m telescope, Haute-Provence employing the 1.2 m telescope, and Bucharest using a small 23 cm telescope. These add a total of 153 positions for 16 PHAs and NEAs, which were accepted by Minor Planet Center. Recently, a 1 m telescope was allocated by ESO in La Silla to be automated and used as the Southern dedicated facility by EURONEAR.  相似文献

The ten-degree tilt of the Jovian magnetic dipole causes the magnetic equator to move back and forth across Jupiters rotational equator and the Galileo orbit that lies therein. Beyond about 24 Jovian radii, the equatorial current sheet thins and the magnetic structure changes from quasi-dipolar into magnetodisk-like with two regions of nearly radial but antiparallel magnetic field separated by a strong current layer. The magnetic field at the center of the current sheet is very weak in this region. Herein we examine the current sheet at radial distances from 24–55 Jovian radii. We find that the magnetic structure very much resembles the structure seen at planetary magnetopause and tail current sheet crossings. The magnetic field variation is mainly linear with little rotation of the field direction. At times there is almost no small-scale structure present and the normal component of the magnetic field is almost constant through the current sheet. At other times there are strong small-scale structures present in both the southward and northward directions. This small-scale structure appears to grow with radial distance and may provide the seeds for the explosive reconnection observed at even greater radial distances on the nightside. Beyond about 40 Jovian radii, the thin current sheet also appears to be almost constantly in oscillatory motion with periods of about 10 min. The amplitude of these oscillations also appears to grow with radial distance. The source of these fluctuations may be dynamical events in the more distant magnetodisk.  相似文献

Sunspots are the most readily visible manifestations of solar magnetic field concentrations and of their interaction with the Sun's plasma. Although sunspots have been extensively studied for almost 400 years and their magnetic nature has been known since 1908, our understanding of a number of their basic properties is still evolving, with the last decades producing considerable advances. In the present review I outline our current empirical knowledge and physical understanding of these fascinating structures. I concentrate on the internal structure of sunspots, in particular their magnetic and thermal properties and on some of their dynamical aspects. Global tracking coverage of the Apollo 15 subsatellite has provided gravity measurements from 50 km altitudes over the entire Humorum basin. An estimate of surface mass points at 2 degree intervals, which best fit the data reveals a mass distribution having a lesser mass excess for the very central area. When two different profiles were fit using a 2 disk model it was again found for each profile that the smaller central disk decreased the central mass by approximately 30%. The mass distribution per unit area however for the major portion of the mascon is still consistent with the other mascons (Crisium, Nectaris and Serenitatis) of approximately 800-900 kg cm–2. The surface mass point solution seems to correlate somewhat with the dark areas on Whitaker's IR-UV map.Paper dedicated to Prof. Harold C. The chaotic regions of the phase space in the vicinity of the 2:1 and 3:2 jovian resonances are identified by using a mapping technique derived from a second-order expansion of the disturbing function for the planar elliptical restricted three-body problem. It is shown that both resonances have extensive chaotic regions which in some cases can lead to large changes in the eccentricity of asteroid orbits. Although the 3:2 resonance is shown to be more chaotic than the 2:1 resonance, the existence of the Hilda group of asteroids and the Hecuba gap may be explained by distinct differences in the location of the high-eccentricity regions at each resonance. The problem of the convergence of the expansion of the disturbing function in the outer asteroid belt is also discussed.  相似文献

An orbital solution for the MACHO*05:34:41.3–69:31:39 eclipsing binary system is presented, based on the published light curve and spectral data obtained with the 2.15-m telescope at CASLEO. Based on these spectroscopic observations, the binary components of this system were classified as O3 If* and O6:V respectively. The radial velocity data along with the published light curve were analysed with the Wilson–Devinney code to derive the following masses and radii for the components of this system:             and     The solution shows that the system is in overcontact, as one would expect from the derived masses and the very short orbital period (∼1.4 d).  相似文献

Initial analysis of the Mariner 9 high resolution pictures of Phobos surface features has been completed. A control network of 38 landmarks has been established and used to determine the physical size, shape, orientation, libration, and topography properties of Phobos. The results verified the synchronous rotation of Phobos and revealed a libration of approximately 5° in the orbit plane of Phobos. A preliminary map of Phobos, based on the control network analysis, is given.  相似文献

In recent decades, investigations of Pluto with up-to-date astronomical instruments yielded results that have been generally confirmed by the New Horizons mission. In 2006, in Prague, the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified Pluto as a member of the dwarf planet category according to the criteria defined by the IAU for the term “planet”. At the same time, interest in studies of Pluto was increasing, while the space investigations of Pluto were delayed. In 2006, the New Horizons Pluto spacecraft started its journey to Pluto. On July 14, 2015, the spacecraft, being in fly-by mode, made its closest approach to Pluto. The heterogeneities and properties of the surface and rarified atmosphere were investigated thoroughly. Due to the extreme remoteness of the spacecraft and the energy limitations, it will take 18 months to transmit the whole data volume. Along with the preliminary results of the New Horizons Pluto mission, this paper reviews the basics on Pluto and its moons acquired from the ground-based observations and with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). There are only a few meteorite craters on the surfaces of Pluto and Charon, which distinctly marks them apart from such satellites of the giant planets as Ganymede and Callisto. The explanation is that the surface of Pluto is young: its age is estimated at less than 100 Myr. Ice glaciers of apparently a nitrogen nature were found. Nitrogen is also the main component of the atmosphere of Pluto. The planet demonstrates the signs of strong geologic activity, though the energy sources of these processes are unknown.  相似文献

Summary. During the last decade white dwarfs have become important as tools in many areas beyond traditional stellar physics: from the age determination of the stars in the solar neighborhood to the dating of open clusters and the distance determination of globular clusters. They are primary candidates for the MACHO microlensing events, possibly for a stellar component of the dark halo, and for the supernova Ia progenitors. The recent developments in these areas are reviewed, but some highlights from more “mature” areas such as stellar parameters, mass distributions, magnetic, and pulsating white dwarfs are also summarized briefly. Asteroid families are products of catastrophic collisions, and their properties are a very important input for modelling the physics which governs these phenomena. A deep change in the interpretation of the available data on families, after a first extensive set of analyses carried out after 1990, is currently proposed by several authors. This is mainly due to the recognition of the importance of the Yarkovsky effect as a powerful mechanism of evolution of asteroids' orbits. Moreover, also the most recent results of hydrocode simulations of catastrophic collision phenomena can hardly be reconciled with family data in the absence of mechanisms of evolution of the orbits. A new general scheme of interpretation, which is in several respects opposite with respect to earlier ideas developed without consideration of a Yarkovsky-driven evolution, is emerging. However, it is not yet fully clear to what extent earlier interpretations of family properties are really wrong, and a synthesis of pre-Yarkovsky and post-Yarkovsky interpretations is probably needed.
