A strong correlation between the equivalent widths of the 2200 Å absorption band in the interstellar extinction curves and the colour excessesE B-V of the stars was found. The oscillator strength and the damping constant of the 2200 Å transition were estimated. From these findings some conclusions concerning the identification problem were drawn.  相似文献

The four diffuse interstellar absorption bands at 4430, 4760, 4890, and 6180 and the two diffuse lines at 5780 and 5797 are interpreted as belonging to pre-ionization transitions in H and O, respectively. In both cases the identifications are supported by extrapolations of wave numbers of resonance lines along isoelectronic sequences.In the H case the hypothesis as to the origin of the bands is supported by quantum-mechanical results byHerzenberg andMandl (1963) as to the positions of resonances in collisions between neutral hydrogen atoms and free electrons. The relatively large intensities of the forbidden transitions indicate that the extent of the ion in its excited states may be very large as compared to ordinary atomic dimensions. In the O case the relative doublet separation, as extrapolated along the isoelectronic sequence, is used for the identification of the doublet.  相似文献

The hump in the ultraviolet part of the interstellar extinction curve is interpreted as a broad diffuse absorption band. Its equivalent width is estimated for 36 stars by means of OAO-2 data. The equivalent widths are correlated with the following parameters: colour excessE(B-V), colour excessE(B – V), depth of the band m max, equivalent widths of the diffuse bands at 5780 and 6284 Å, and the column density of neutral hydrogenN HI. The physical parameters half-width and oscillator strength of the band at 2175 Å are estimated.  相似文献

For the case of optically thin lines, we show that the relation existing between the first order momentW 1 (E()/E c –1)(–12)d of a P Cygni profile and the quantityMn(level), whereM is the mass-loss rate of the central star andn(level) the fractional abundance of the ion under study, is in fact independent of any Sobolev-type approximations used for the transfer of line radiation, contrary to what has been assumed in some previous works (Castoret al., 1981; Surdej, 1982). Consequently, all results established in the context of very rapidly expanding atmospheres and mainly referring to the non-dependence ofW 1 vs various physical (underlying photospheric absorption line, limb darkening, etc.) and geometrical (velocity fieldv(r), etc.) effects remain unchanged for arbitrary (e.g non-Sobolev type) outward-accelerating velocity laws.Whenever applied with caution, Equation (50) thus provides a very powerful means of deriving mass-loss rates—with a total uncertainty less than 60 percent—from the measurementW 1 of unsaturated P Cygni profiles observed in the spectrum of early—as well as late—type stars, quasars, etc.  相似文献

The escape probability method introduced by Sobolev to treat the transfer of line photons is used in order to derive the expressions of thenth order momentW n (E()/E c –1)(–12) n ·d of a P Cygni profile formed in rapidly expanding envelopes around a central point-like source under various physical and geometrical conditions.With the only assumption that there is mass-conservation of the species in the flow, we state for the case of optically thin lines that the relation between the first order momentW 1 and the quantityM n (level), first established by Castoret al. (1981) under more restrictive conditions, is in fact independent of the type of velocity fieldv(r) and a fortiori of the distribution adopted for the radial opacity 12 r (X). These results also remain unchanged when including collisions (0) and/or an additional rotational velocity fieldv (r) in the expanding atmosphere. We investigate the presence of an underlying photospheric absorption line and conclude that for realistic cases, neglecting this boundary condition to the radiative transfer leads to an underestimate of the mass-loss rate by a factor of about 20%. By means of a three-level atom model, we demonstrate that all results derived for a single line transition equally apply for an unresolved doublet profile providedW 1 andM n (level) are calculated with the weighted wavelength D and total oscillator strengthf D of the doublet.Considering the occultation and inclination effects caused by the finite size of the central core, we refine the value of the multiplicative constant fixing the ratio ofW 1 toM n (level). We show that this relation allows a determination of the mass-loss rate with an uncertainly less than 30%, irrespective of the sizeL max of the atmosphere and of the limb-darkening affecting the stellar core. Reviewing all possible sources of error, we finally conclude that this method of deriving a mass-loss rate from the analysis of an unsaturated P Cygni profile is very powerful. The total uncertainty affecting the determination ofM n (level) from the measurement ofW 1 should be smaller than 60%.  相似文献

Cyclic variations of the mean semi-annual intensities I of the coronal green line 530.3 nm are compared with the mean semi-annual variations of the Wolf numbers W during the period of 1943–1999 (activity cycles 18–23). The values of I in the equatorial zone proved to correlate much better with the Wolf numbers in a following cycle than in a given one (the correlation coefficient r is 0.86 and 0.755, respectively). Such increase of the correlation coefficient with a shift by one cycle differs in different phases of the cycle, being the largest at the ascending branch. The regularities revealed make it possible to predict the behaviour of W in the following cycle on the basis of intensities of the coronal green line in the preceding cycle. We predict the maximum semi-annual W in cycle 23 to be 110–122 and the epoch of minimum between cycles 23 and 24 to take place at 2006–2007. A slow increase of I in the current cycle 23 permits us to forecast a low-Wolf-number cycle 24 with the maximum W50 at 2010–2011. A scheme is proposed on the permanent transformation of the coronal magnetic fields of different scales explaining the found phenomenon.  相似文献

Extinction and scattering efficiencies are calculated for spherically stratified graphite spheres using formulae which are valid in the small particle limit. The resulting extinction curve for this model is shown to peak at an ultraviolet wavelength -1=4.8–5 -1 close to that for the case of the less probable plane stratified model of a graphite sphere. The albedo in the present model is higher than that calculated for the plane stratified case by a factor 1.5–2 in the far ultraviolet. Extinction curves are also obtained for the case of a dielectric sphere surrounded by a thin graphite film, and it is shown that there now is an extinction minimum at -14.6 -1.  相似文献

Computations of polarization and intensity of radiation from a unit stellar surface area are presented, as well as a study of the numerical characteristics of atmospheres — single-scattering albedo and the initial source function(), which define the polarization behaviour of atmospheres. The radiatively stable models of stellar atmospheres presented by Kuruczet al. (1974) and Kurucz (1979) have been used for calculations. Since the versus optical depth dependence is rather weak, it has been assumed that (=cost. With a fixed effective temperatureT eff maximum values of are characteristic of stars featuring the lowest surface gravity accelerationg. Among stars with radiatively stable atmospheres, maximum values of (=5000 Å) 0.4–0.6 are exhibited by supergiants withT eff=8000–20 000 K. The plot of () is characterized by discontinuities at the boundaries of spectral series for hydrogen and, sometimes, for helium. Maximum are attained in the Lyman region of =912–1200 Å, where can reach the value 0.7–0.9 for supergiants, this value being 0.3 for Main-Sequence stars. For stars withT eff 35 000 K, high values of also are attained for <912 Å. Within the infrared region, is always small because of bremsstrahlung absorption.A rapid growth of the source functionB with < typical for ultraviolet range (within the Wien part of spectrum), together with high values of results in the strong polarization of emission from a unit stellar surface element, sometimes exceeding the values for the case of a pure electron scattering. For longer wavelengths, where the limb-darkening coefficient is smaller, the plane of polarization abruptly turns 90° in the central parts of the visible stellar disk.  相似文献

Elemental abundances of the VH group of cosmic radiation have been measured in the energy interval 250–550 MeV nucl–1 in a balloon exposure at Sioux Falls (South Dakota) of a plastic detector LeXAN stack. The so obtained abundances have been extrapolated to the sources in the frame of the homogeneous model correcting for energy loss. After taking into account solar modulation, the best fit to model values has led to a escape mean free path e = 5E –0.4 g cm–2, whereE is the energy in GeV nucl–1, forE>1 GeV nucl–1, and a constant e = 5 g cm–2 forE1 GeV nucl–1. When turning to the diffusion model, also including an energy loss term, a diffusion coefficientD=3×1028 cm2 s–1 has been estimated.  相似文献

We present spectrophotometric studies of comet Hartley-Good (1985l) in the spectral region 3200–7000 Å. The emission features of molecules CN, CH, C2, and C3 are observed. The variation of the emission strength of different species has been studied as a function of heliocentric distance. The Advanced Technology Solar Telescope site survey Sky Brightness Monitor simultaneously images the solar disk and the sky to about 8 solar radii in four wavelengths at 450, 530, 890 and 940 nm. One day of data from Mees Solar Observatory on Haleakala and from the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak (Sunspot, New Mexico) are analyzed. Both sites show strong Rayleigh extinction, but while Haleakala shows a larger aerosol component, Sunspot shows a large variation in the aerosol component. Overall the Haleakala extinction varies as –2 whereas the Sunspot extinction changes from about –3.5 to about –2, suggesting an increasing aerosol component during the day. Water vapor absorption measurements from both sites are similar, though Sunspot shows larger time variations than Haleakala. The instrument-corrected sky brightness from both sites show comparable values, and again the Sunspot data show more variations. The sky brightness values show a radial dependence of sky brightness of r –0.1 at Haleakala, but a dependence of r –1.0 at Sunspot. The wavelength variation of the sky brightness at Haleakala is relatively constant at –1.5 but varies at Sunspot from –1.5 to –0.1 again suggesting an increasing aerosol contribution during the day at Sunspot. Finally, dust measurements near the ground are compared with the extinction wavelength exponent for data taken at Haleakala on 24 Feb. 2003. The measurements suggest more large dust particles are present near the ground than averaged over the whole air column.  相似文献

The polarization structure in several spectral lines in solar type stars is computed using the method described by McKenna (1981, 1984a). The frequency redistribution function used for these calculations is a linear combination ofR II andR III. The line profiles and polarization structures have been computed for several weak solar resonance lines includingKi 7664 Å, Sri 4607 Å, Baii 4554 Å, for various polar angles along the stellar disk. Both the line profiles and polarization structures as well as the center to limb behavior of the line center polarization agree well with observations.The somewhat stronger resonance line Cai 4227 Å shows a different polarization structure when compared to the weaker solar resonance lines. It is found that for strong resonance lines the proper redistribution function to be used is a linear combination ofR III andR v (see McKenna, 1981, 1984b; Heinzel, 1981). The major reason for this is that for strong resonance lines both the upper and lower levels are broadened by collisions. This violates the assumptions upon which the redistribution functionsR II andR III are based.  相似文献

In order to obtain a better agreement between observed and computed values of the solar intensity, an improved temperature distribution is deduced for the range 0.02<0< 10. The intensity observations here considered refer to the wavelength region between 1980 and 129 500, and the center-limb variations generally go down to cos = 0.1. The improved model, given in Figure 4 and Table II, differs rather little from the Utrecht 1964 model, used here as a reference.It appears necessary to introduce an empirical correction function to be applied to the continuous absorption coefficient. This function was derived for the spectral region between 2000 and 130000 Å; it is shown in Figure 5.Furthermore, an extension of the model (1.10–7<0< 2.10–2) is deduced (see Table III and Figure 8), which reasonably well represents the observations of the ultraviolet solar flux ( 900–1700 Å).  相似文献

In this paper we study the far-UV as well as the UV spectrum of the spectroscopic binary system SZ Psc in the wavelength ranges 1235–1950 Å and 2710–3090 Å, respectively, from spectra obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). The UV spectrum of SZ Psc is mainly an emission spectrum. The short wavelength region includes emission lines formed from the low chromosphere to the transition region (e.g., Siiv,Civ, andNv) and also a deep and broad absorption line of Feii.The Mgii[1] resonance doublet at about 2800 Å presents a P Cygni profile and a multiple structure with two emission and two absorption satellite components. Spectrographic observations of the flash spectrum were made by the Kwasan Observatory at the total solar eclipse on 7 March, 1970. The integrated intensities of Fexiv 5303, Fex 6374, and the continuum were measured on the spectrograms as a function of height above the Sun's limb. It was found that a large amount of emission in the coronal lines originates in the interspicular regions of the chromosphere. Analysis of the data yielded that the interspicular regions consist of coronal material of T e = 1.6 × 106–1.2 × 106 and log N e = 8.5–9.5, and that a decrease in T e and an increase in N e occur with decreasing height.  相似文献

The solar spectrum of wavelength 350–800 nm has been measured for the four seasons. The intensity of the solar radiation in W m-2 nm-1 has been calculated and used to estimate the monochromatic optical depth of Bahrain's sky. It was found that the optical depth (i.e., extinction coefficient,k) is least in winter and highest in summer. Comparison of the hourly variation of the optical depth between Bahrain's atmosphere and that of Dhahran (Saudi Arabia) shows that the abundance of small size particles in the former is more than in the latter. This causes more extinction effect in Bahrain than in Dhahran, especially in the wavelengths 350–525 nm. The relation betweenk and for each season in Bahrain is in the formk =A n , whereA is a constant andn is a negative integer, is reported in this study.  相似文献

A cross-correlation study for time-lags of ±5 yrs between eleven ground based ozone stations (1957–1985) for = 40°N–75° N and = 30° E-114° W and five volcanic emissivity indices has shown their close connection: significant correlations well above 90% were obtained. Intepretation of these positive/negative correlations () was based on the global wind circulation (aided also by a 2-D, 3-D representation between, , ), and the types of volcanic aerosols leading to heterogeneous chemical reactions with ozone.  相似文献

During the process of continuous post-crystallization cooling, the degree of phase transformation in pyroxenes (ordering and decomposition of solid solutions) is determined by the total cooling time and by cooling rates at individual stages; this degree can also be applied to the estimation of the sub-solidus cooling time of pyroxenes and of rocks, genetically associated with them (geochronometer). The degree of Fe2+-Mg order in distribution between theM 1 andM 2 sites observed in orthopyroxenes can be used as the criterion for the sub-solidus cooling rates of orthopyroxenes. A technique for approximate estimation of cooling time (rates) of orthopyroxenes in the 1000–500°C interval is suggested on the basis of an ion exchange reaction kinetic model, with the adoption of a few assumptions. X-ray structural analysis study revealed the character of the Fe2+-Mg intersite distribution in the M-511 and M-533 orthopyroxenes from the Luna-20 regolith; the obtainedK D values make 0.072(T e o ~ 460°C) and 0.06 (T e o ~ 480°C), respectively. The corresponding evaluation of the linear cooling rate in the 1000-500°C range, as inferred by the obtained data, gave the value of 0.2–0.25° h–1. Two features of the exosolution relate to the sub-solidus cooling rate of clinopyroxenes: the degree of phase separation by composition Wo and the exsolution scale . The monocrystal X-ray diffraction study, the transmission electron microscopy and the X-ray microprobe analysis produced the exsolution parameters for clinopyroxenes 2001-3, 2001-6 and 559 from the Luna-20 regolith: Wo 26%, 28% and 45% respectively; 300 Å, 1000 Å and 60 , respectively. The solvus temperatures (T e) of the clinopyroxenes 2001-3 and 2001-6 make, respectively, 1100 ± 25°C and 1095 ± 45°C; the spinodal temperatures (T s) areT s =T e – 50°C and represent quenching temperatures of the given pyroxenes in relation to the exsolution process. The cooling time fromT cryst. toT s was estimated and the value of the formal linear cooling rate was found to be ~ 90° h–1 (2001-3) and ~ 8° h–1 (2001-6). The average value of the pyroxene 559 sub-soldius cooling rate in the 1150–1000°C range was four orders less. The obtained data were discussed in view of the possible genesis of the studied Luna-20 pyroxenes.  相似文献

Some results of observations of the spectrum of the spectroscopic-binary Ap star CrB in the region of the lithium line Li I 6708Å are presented. The observations were made at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory over the period 1993–1995 with the coudé spectrograph equipped with a CCD camera on the 2.6-m telescope. Several factors which can affect the behavior of the lithium blend are examined: stellar rotation, magnetic field, isotopic shift, the binary system, and blending by unidentified elements. The principal result of this work is the detection of variability of the lithium blend Li I 6708Å over the period of rotation of the star. The variations of the radial velocity Vr, and the FWHM of the lithium blend are reported here for the first time. They indicate either a nonuniform distribution of lithium or a nonuniform distribution of conditions for excitation of the lithium resonance doublet in the complex structure of the strong surface magnetic field. Similar variations are also shown by the lines of the rare-earth elements Gd II 6702.10 Å, Gd II + Ce II 6704.3Å, and Ce II + Fe I 6706.0 Å.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 39, No. 1, pp. 19–30, January–March, 1996.  相似文献
