We have carried out a search for compact radio sources in the cores of 16 nearby radio galaxies. We detected compact components in four radio galaxies, and found upper limits for the flux density in compact components in ten radio galaxies. VLBI observations enabled the detection of a turnover in the spectra of the two nearby radio galaxies 3C 111 and 3C 465. Using a method based on an inhomogeneous model for a synchrotron source, we estimate the magnetic-field strength and the energy densities in the magnetic field and relativistic electrons in the cores of these radio galaxies. Strong inhomogeneity in the distribution of the magnetic fields in the cores of 3C 111 and 3C 465 is implied by our analysis. The magnetic-field strengths in the central regions of these galactic nuclei, on scales of ~0.1 pc, exceed the mean strength by four to five orders of magnitude, and lie in the range 102 G < H < 104 G.  相似文献

The arrival directions of extensive air showers with energies 4×1019<E≤3×1020 eV detected by the AGASA, Yakutsk, Haverah Park, and Fly’s Eye arrays are analyzed in order to identify possible sources of cosmic rays with these energies. We searched for active galactic nuclei, radio galaxies, and X-ray pulsars within 3-error boxes around the shower-arrival directions and calculated the probabilities of objects being in the 3 error boxes by chance. These probabilities are small in the case of Seyfert galaxies with redshifts z<0.01 and BL Lac objects, corresponding to P>3σ (σ is the parameter of Gaussian distribution). The Seyfert galaxies are characterized by moderate luminosities (L<1046 erg/s) and weak radio and X-ray emission. We also analyzed gamma-ray emission at energies E>1014 eV recorded by the Bolivian and Tian Shan arrays. The source identifications suggest that the gamma rays could have been produced in interactions of cosmic rays with the microwave background radiation and subsequent electromagnetic cascades in intergalactic space. We estimate the strength of intergalactic magnetic fields outside galaxy clusters to be B≤8.7×10?10 G.  相似文献

A method for estimating the magnetic-field strengths and angular sizes of radio sources displaying synchrotron self-absorption based on their observed radio spectra is considered. The method is used to derive the angular sizes of compact radio sources (components) and the magnetic fields in these regions, as well as the energy and number of relativistic electrons and the radiative power of a number of quasars and radio galaxies.  相似文献

A new method for estimating the physical parameters of active galactic nuclei involving the analysis of observations of the compact radio sources in them is proposed. The method is based on an inhomogeneous model for a synchrotron radio source. Theoretical spectra of the radio sources are obtained via numerical solution of the transfer equation. Due to the paucity of observational data, only interval estimates of the magnetic field strength and the energy densities of the magnetic field and relativistic particles can be obtained. A mechanism for the formation of flat radio spectra is proposed.  相似文献

Results of studies of bright radio sources in the constellation Cetus are presented. More than 50% of the sources have radio spectral indices steeper than 0.9. Optical identifications have been determined for 35 sources. A large fraction of the radio sources are identified with weak blue galaxies. Given their spectral indices, it is likely that these objects have redshifts z=0.4–1.0. More than 20% of the steep-spectrum sources do not have optical identifications and appear to be weak galaxies with z>2.  相似文献

A model for the formation of supermassive black holes at the center of a cluster of primordial black holes is developed. It is assumed that ~10?3 of the mass of the Universe consists of compact clusters of primordial black holes that arose as a result of phase transitions in the early Universe. These clusters also serve as centers for the condensation of dark matter. The formation of protogalaxies with masses of the order of 2 × 108 M at redshift z = 15 containing clusters of black holes is investigated. The nuclei of these protogalaxies contain central black holes with masses ~105 M , and the protogalaxies themselves resemble dwarf spherical galaxies with their maximum density at their centers. Subsequent merging of these induced protogalaxies with ordinary halos of dark matter leads to the standard picture for the formation of the large-scale structure of the Universe. The merging of the primordial black holes leads to the formation of supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei and produces the observed correlation between the mass of the central black hole and the bulge velocity dispersion.  相似文献

The possible influence of galactic interaction on the formation and growth of supermassive black holes in their nuclei and the dynamics of their circumnuclear regions are considered, based on new data from the updated Vorontsov-Velyaminov catalog of interacting galaxies and modern estimates of the masses of supermassive black holes. A sample of interacting galaxies with known black-hole masses is created, and the dependence of the masses of the central black holes on the absolute B magnitudes and central stellar velocity dispersions in the host galaxy derived for this sample. A statistical analysis of the sample shows that the black-hole masses in interacting galaxies satisfy the same mass-velocity dispersion relation as non-interacting galaxies. A higher mass dispersion is characteristic of merging pairs than for galaxies that interact in other ways. The maximum masses of the central black holes are observed in radio galaxies.  相似文献

The physical conditions in the radio sources CTA 21 and OF+247 are studied assuming that the low-frequency spectral turnovers are due to synchrotron self-absorption. The physical parameters of the radio sources are estimated using a technique based on a nonuniform synchrotron source model. It is shown that the magnetic-field distributions in the dominant compact components of these radio sources are strongly inhomogeneous. The magnetic fields at the center of the sources are B ~ 10?1 G, and the fields are two to three orders of magnitude weaker at the periphery. The magnetic field averaged over the compact component is B ~ 10?3 G, and the density of relativistic electrons is n e ~ 10?3 cm?3. Assuming that there is equipartition of the energies of the magnetic field and relativistic particles, averaged over the source, 〈E H 〉 = 〈E e 〉 ~ 10?7–10?6 erg cm?3. The energy density of the magnetic field exceeds that of the relativistic electrons at the centers of the radio sources. The derived parameters of CTA 21 and OF+247 are close to those of the hot spots in the radio galaxy Cygnus A. On this basis, it is suggested that CTA 21 and OF+247 are radio galaxies at an early stage of their evolution, when the hot spots (dominant compact radio components) have appeared, and the radio lobes (weak extended components) are still being formed.  相似文献

We propose a new method for estimating the HI deficiency in galaxies. The method is based on a semi-empirical relationship between the total mass of HI and specific angular momentum of isolated galaxies. The atomic-hydrogen deficiency is estimated for nearby spiral galaxies and for spiral galaxies in the Virgo and Coma clusters. The mean HI deficiencies determined for these samples using our method are similar to those obtained with conventional methods, although there are considerable differences in some cases. The HI deficiency in nearby galaxies does not depend on their degree of isolation, and there is no systematic discrepancy between their HI and “normal” masses. Significant HI deficiencies are observed in the Virgo and Coma clusters, out to distances of 1.5 and 3–4 Mpc from the cluster centers, respectively. At such distances, the ram pressure is too small to sweep a considerable amount of gas from the galactic disks. Either these galaxies have passed through the dense cluster center, or their gas deficiency is due to the fact that the halo had stopped accreting onto the disk when the galaxy entered the cluster.  相似文献

We study a compact group of 18 galaxies in the cluster A1367 with redshifts z = 0.0208–0.025. The group’s center of activity in the radio is the galaxy NGC 3862, whose radio flux is an order of magnitude stronger than for the other members of the group. We present coordinates derived from the Palomar plate archive together with recessional velocities, and analyze other characteristics of the group’s galaxies. The results of 1400 MHz observations of NGC 3862 with the RATAN-600 radio telescope are presented. These observations indicate that the galaxy’s radio emission is variable.  相似文献

A phenomenological model for the evolution of classical radio galaxies such as Cygnus A is presented. An activity cycle of the host galaxy in the radio begins with the birth of radio jets, which correspond to shocks on scales ~1 pc (the radio galaxy B0108+388). In the following stage of the evolution, the radio emission comes predominantly from formations on scales of 10–100 pc, whose physical parameters are close to those of the hot spots of Cygnus A (this corresponds to GHz-peaked spectrum radio sources). Further, the hot spots create radio lobes on scales of 103–104 pc (compact steep-spectrum radio sources). The fully formed radio galaxies have radio jets, hot spots, and giant radio lobes; the direction of the jets can vary in a discrete steps with time, creating new hot spots and inflating the radio lobes (as in Cygnus A). In the final stage of the evolutionary cycle, first the radio jets disappear, then the hot spots, and finally the radio lobes (similar to the giant radio galaxies DA 240 and 3C 236). A large fraction of radio galaxies with repeating activity cycles is observed. The close connection between Cygnus A-type radio galaxies and optical quasars is noted, as well as similarity in the cosmological evolution of powerful radio galaxies and optical quasars.  相似文献

A complete sample of 104 bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the “Planck” catalog (early results) were observed at 36.8 GHz with the 22-m radio telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (CrAO).Variability indices of the sources at this frequency were determined based on data from theWMAP space observatory, theMetsa¨ hovi RadioObservatory (Finland), and the CrimeanAstrophysical Observatory. New observational results confirm that the variability of these AGNs is stronger in the millimeter than at other radio wavelengths. The variability indices probably change as a result of the systematic decrease in the AGN flux densities in the transition to the infrared. Some radio sources demonstrate significant flux-density variations, including decreases, which sometimes cause them to fall out of the analysed sample. The change of the variability index in the millimeter is consistent with the suggestion that this variability is due to intrinsic processes in binary supermassive black holes at an evolutionary stage close to coalescence. All 104 of the sources studied are well known objects that are included in various radio catalogs and have flux densities exceeding 1 Jy at 36.8 GHz.  相似文献

The properties of giant radio sources (GRS’s) are considered with the aim of identifying conditions contributing to their formation, using data from the literature, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and the APM catalog. The optical and radio properties of normal-size radio sources, (≤1 Mpc), are compared. The following conclusions are reached. (1) The fraction of objects with broad emission lines among GRS’s with high-excitation spectra is the same as for isotropic samples of radio sources; in the framework of the “unified scheme,” this testifies to an isotropic distribution of angles between the radio jets of GRS’s and the line of sight, i.e., GRS’s do not represent a population of objects whose radio jets are in the plane of the sky. (2) Giant radio sources do not differ from normal radio sources in the distributions of various asymmetry parameters for their extended radio components; in the unified scheme, the similarity of the asymmetry distributions for giant radio galaxies and giant radio quasars suggests that the origin of the asymmetry of their extended radio components is inhomogeneity of the external conditions. (3) The observed powers of the radio jets of giant and normal radio sources do not differ, making it unlikely that the large sizes of the GRS’s are due to this factor. (4) The richness and character of the environments of giant and normal radio sources do not differ: giant host galaxies are found in both isolated fields and in clusters of up to Abell class 1 in richness. This argues against the idea that a low density of the environment is the only origin of GRS’s. (5) The relatively large fraction of radio sources with two pairs of extended radio components (so-called double-double radio sources) among GRS’s testifies that the lifetimes of GRS’s are approximately an order of magnitude longer than those of normal radio sources.Given the equal spatial densities of nearby (z < 0.1) GRS’s and FR II radio sources with powers P 1.4 MHz > 1025 W/Hz, this indicates that ∼10% of FR II radio sources have lifetimes an order of magnitude longer, and evolve into GRS’s. (6) The small (∼0.1) ratio of the number of known GRS’s to the number of normal FR II radio sources, together with the observed spatial density of GRS’s at z ∼ 0.6, which is an order of magnitude lower than the predicted value, suggests that a considerable number of GRS’s were missed by surveys at z > 0.1, possibly due to observational selection effects because of their relatively low radio powers and radio surface brightnesses. (7) The absence of “double-double” giant quasars suggests that these objects have a shorter activity time scale than GRS’s. In an evolutionary scenario that is an alternative to the unified scheme uniting “radio loud” quasars and radio galaxies, radio quasars evolve with time into radio galaxies, and the observed relative number of radio quasars among the GRS’s (∼10%) can be interpreted as reflecting the existence of a long-lived population of “radio loud” quasars comprising ∼10% of all radio quasars, with such a population of long-lived radio quasars being the parent population for giant radio galaxies.  相似文献

A new catalog of 8382 close quasar-galaxy pairs is presented. The catalog was composed using published catalogs of quasars and active galactic nuclei containing 11358 objects, as well as the LEDA catalog of galaxies, which contains on the order of 100 thousand objects. Based on these new data, the dependence of the number of pairs on a=z G /z Q is analyzed, where z G and z Q are the redshifts of the galaxy and quasar, respectively, revealing an excess of pairs with a<0.1 and a>0.9. This means that the galaxies in pairs are preferably located close to either the observer or the quasar and avoid intermediate distances along the line of sight to the quasar. Computer simulations demonstrate that it is not possible to explain this number of pairs with the observed distribution in a as the result of chance positional coincidences with a uniform spatial distribution of galaxies. Data on globular clusters show that the excess of pairs with a<0.1 and a>0.9 is consistent with the hypothesis that we are observing distant compact objects that are strongly gravitationally lensed by transparent lenses with a King mass distribution located in the halos of nearby galaxies. The Hubble diagram for galaxies and quasars is presented. Observational tests of the mesolensing hypothesis are formulated.  相似文献

A new class of metagalactic system—wide triple systems of galaxies with characteristic scale lengths of ~1 Mpc—are analyzed. Dynamical models of such systems are constructed, and the amount of dark mass contained in them is estimated. In principle, kinematic data for wide triplets allow two types of models: with individual galactic halos and with a common halo for the entire system. A choice between the two models can be made based on X-ray observations of these systems, which can determine whether clustering and hierarchical evolution continues on scales of ~1 Mpc or whether systems with such scale lengths are in a state of virial quasi-equilibrium.  相似文献

Results of centimeter-wavelength RATAN-600 observations of several hundred NVSS objects with a wide range of flux densities are presented. Changes in spectral-index distributions from strong-to faint-object populations are estimated. In the transition from strong to faint radio sources, the number of steep-and ultrasteep-spectrum objects decreases and the minimum between steep-and flat-spectrum objects, which was first discovered in the 1970s, becomes less distinct. A less certain increase in the fraction of inverted-spectrum objects is also found. Comparison with theoretical models of radio-source evolution suggests that the decrease in the number of steep-and ultrasteep-spectrum objects can be naturally explained by a sharp decrease in the fraction of classical FRII radio galaxies. The decrease in the sharpness of the minimum may be due to the growing contribution from the population with spectral indices 0.7–0.5, which is usually identified with starbust galaxies. The small increase in the fraction of inverted-spectrum radio sources can be attributed to the growing number of objects with active nuclei. Our spectrum-based conclusions are confirmed by the morphology of the FIRST Catalog images. The number of radio sources associated with supermassive black holes in the Early Universe is estimated using data from the SDSS Catalog.  相似文献

This is the first paper in a project aimed at analyzing relations between the masses of supermassive black holes or nuclear clusters in galaxies and the kinematic features of the host galaxies. We present long-slit spectroscopic observations of galaxies obtained on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory using the SCORPIO focal reducer. Radial profiles of the line-of-sight velocities and velocity dispersions of the stellar populations were obtained for seven galaxies with known masses of their supermassive black holes (Mkn 79, Mkn 279, NGC 2787, NGC 3245, NGC 3516, NGC 7457, and NGC 7469), and also for one galaxy with a nuclear cluster (NGC 428). Velocity profiles of the emitting gas were obtained for some of these galaxies as well. We present preliminary galactic rotation curves derived from these data.  相似文献

A cross-identification of objects in the low-frequency (365 MHz) Texas radio catalog and in IRAS catalogs at four infrared wavelengths has yielded a list of 715 objects for further studies. Objects with steep spectra for which the difference in the centers of gravity of the radio and infrared sources was less than 3″ were selected from this list. Seventeen of the objects have been observed at six wavelengths using the RATAN-600 radio telescope. Spectra of nine objects from the initial list for which there were candidate optical counterparts were obtained using the 2.1-m telescope of the INAOE. The results of these observations are discussed. The presence of steep spectral indices for the radio sources is confirmed. The possible optical counterparts include interacting galaxies, an infrared galaxy, two emission-line galaxies, and a candidate BL Lac object. Optical images of the optical counterparts are presented together with radio and optical spectra.  相似文献

A new method for distinguishing candidate giant radio galaxies is proposed and applied. The method is based on comparing the axes of the extended components of NVSS radio sources with separations exceeding 4′, described in a catalog of presumably independent objects. Objects detected using the proposed algorithm include 16 new weak giant-radio-galaxy candidates, for which optical and radio identifications have been obtained using the CATS, NED, SDSS, and SkyView databases.  相似文献

Some features of the low-frequency cut-offs of synchrotron radio spectra are investigated using numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that the interpretation of the radio spectra of compact sources must be based on an exact (numerical) solution of the transfer equation. The need for creating VLBI systems operating at meter wavelengths to study the physical conditions in galactic nuclei is justified.  相似文献
