M TSU : Recovering Seismic Moments from Tsunameter Records   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We define a new magnitude scale, MTSU, allowing the quantification of the seismic moment M0 of an earthquake based on recordings of its tsunami in the far field by ocean-bottom pressure sensors (``tsunameters') deployed in ocean basins, far from continental or island shores which are known to affect profoundly and in a nonlinear fashion the amplitude of the tsunami wave. The formula for MTSU, MTSU = log10 M0 − 20 = log10 X (ω) + CDTSU + CSTSU + C0, where X (ω) is the spectral amplitude of the tsunami, CDTSU a distance correction and CSTSU a source correction, is directly adapted from the mantle magnitude Mm introduced for seismic surface waves by Okal and Talandier. Like Mm, its corrections are fully justified theoretically based on the representation of a tsunami wave as a branch of the Earth's normal modes. Even the locking constant C0, which may depend on the nature of the recording (surface amplitude of the tsunami or overpressure at the ocean floor) and its units, is predicted theoretically. MTSU combines the power of a theoretically developed algorithm, with the robustness of a magnitude measurement that does not take into account such parameters as focal geometry and exact depth, which may not be available under operational conditions in the framework of tsunami warning. We verify the performance of the concept on simulations of the great 1946 Aleutian tsunami at two virtual gauges, and then apply the algorithm to 24 records of 7 tsunamis at DART tsunameters during the years 1994–2003. We find that MTSU generally recovers the seismic moment M0 within 0.2 logarithmic units, even under unfavorable conditions such as excessive focal depth and refraction of the tsunami wave around continental masses. Finally, we apply the algorithm to the JASON satellite trace obtained over the Bay of Bengal during the 2004 Sumatra tsunami, after transforming the trace into a time series through a simple ad hoc procedure. Results are surprisingly good, with most estimates of the moment being over 1029 dyn-cm, and thus identifying the source as an exceptionally large earthquake.  相似文献

Pan evaporation (Ep) is an important indicator of water and energy and the decline of Ep has been reported in many regions over the last decades. The climate and Ep are dependent on each other. In this study, the temporal trends of Ep and main Ep drivers, namely mean air temperature (Ta), wind speed (u), global solar radiation (Rs), net long‐wave radiation(Rnl) and vapour pressure deficit (D) from 1970 to 2012, were calculated on the basis of 26 meteorological stations on the Tibetan Plateau. The arithmetic average of Ep from 26 stations decreased with the rate of ?11.91 mm a?2; the trends of Rs, Rnl, Ta, u and D were ?1.434 w m?2 decade?1, 0.2511 w m?2 decade?1, 0.3590°C decade?1, ?0.2376 m s?1 decade?1 and 9.523 Pa decade?1, respectively. The diffuse irradiance is an essential parameter to model Ep and quantify the contribution of climatic factors to changing Ep. 60 724 observations of Rs and diffuse solar irradiance (Rd) from seven of the 26 stations were used to develop the correlation between the diffuse fraction (Rd/Rs), and the clearness index (Rs/Ro). On the basis of the estimation of the diffuse component of Rs and climatic data, we modified the PenPan model to estimate Chinese micro‐pan evaporation (Ep) and assess the attribution of Ep dynamics using partial derivatives. The results showed that there was a good agreement between the observed and calculated daily Ep values. The observed decrease in Ep was mostly due to declining wind speed (?13.7 mm a?2) with some contributions from decreasing solar irradiance (?3.1 mm a?2); and the increase of temperature had a large positive effect (4.55 mm a?2) in total whilst the increase of Rnl had insignificant effect (0.35 mm a?2) on Ep rates. The Local-Magnitude scale actually in use at Vesuvius Observatory is basedon the measure of seismogram coda duration, and calibrated with data fromIrpinia aftershocks. A recent study on local seismic attenuation at Mt.Vesuvius reveals coda shapes highly different from those from Irpiniaaftershocks, and a very low quality factor, if compared to the average Qof the region, indicating the necessity of the revision of the Magnitudescale, in order to better compare the seismic energy associated to the localseismicity of Mt. Vesuvius to that of other active volcanoes. Being theseismic attenuation parameters known in the area, we could correct theseismic amplitudes for the path effect to obtain precise estimates of theamplitude level of the displacement spectrum. Hence we estimated theMoment-Magnitude, M W, for a set of well recorded micro-earthquakes.To use the Richter formulaM L =log10 A max –log A0(R)we estimated the log Amplitude-Distance correction curve, - log A0(R),numerically synthesizing an S-wave-packet and letting it propagate in aearth medium with the same attenuation properties of those measured at Mt.Vesuvius. Then we synthesized the Wood-Anderson equivalent seismogram forthe same data set and used the distance correction in order to calculate theWood-Anderson Magnitude.This Magnitude scale was normalized in order to fit the Richter formulavalid for Southern California at a distance of 10 km, and resultsto be M WA =log A + 1.34log(R) –1.10. The comparison of the Wood-Anderson scale with the Duration-Magnitude scalein routine use at Vesuvius Observatory indicates that care must be takenwhen the estimate of the Duration-Magnitude is carried out for smallearthquakes recorded at a site characterized by a high level of seismicnoise.  相似文献

—?During 1997 and 1998, twelve chemical explosions were detonated in boreholes at the former Soviet nuclear test site near the Shagan River (STS) in Kazakhstan. The depths of these explosions ranged from 2.5 to 550 m, while the explosive yield varied from 2 to 25 tons. The purpose of these explosions was for closure of the unused boreholes at STS, and each explosion was recorded at local distances by a network of seismometers operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Institute of Geophysics for the National Nuclear Center (NNC). Short-period, fundamental-mode Rayleigh waves (Rg) were generated by these explosions and recorded at the local stations, resultingly the waves exhibited normal dispersion between 0.2 and 3 seconds. Dispersion curves were generated for each propagation path using the Multiple Filter Analysis and Phase Match Filtering techniques. Tomographic maps of Rg group velocity were constructed and show a zone of relatively high velocities for the southwestern (SW) region of the test site and slow propagation for the northeastern (NE) region. For 0.5?sec Rg, the regions are separated by the 2.1?km/sec contour, as propagation in the SW is greater than 2.1?km/sec and less in the NE region. At 1.0 sec period, the 2.3?km/sec contour separates the two regions. Finally, for 1.5 and 2.0 sec, the separation between the two regions is less distinct as velocities in the NE section begin to approach the SW except for a low velocity region (<2.1?km/sec) near the center of the test site. Local geologic structure may explain the different regions as the SW region is composed predominantly of crystalline intrusive rocks, while the NE region consists of alluvium, tuff deposits, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Low velocities are also observed along the Shagan River as it passes through the SW region of the test site for shorter period Rg (0.5–1.0?sec). Iterative, least-squares inversions of the Rg group velocity dispersion curves show shear-wave velocities for the southwestern section that are on average 0.4?km/sec higher than the NE region. At depths greater than 1.5?km the statistical difference between the models is no longer significant. The observed group velocities and different velocity structures correlate with P-wave complexity and with spatial patterns of magnitude residuals observed from nuclear explosions at STS, and may help to evaluate the mechanisms behind those observations.  相似文献

The method of downward continuation is well known to those working in gravity, magnetic, SP and low-frequency electromagnetic exploration. It is demonstrated that the method of continuation can also be usefully employed in the interpretation of induced polarization gradient profiling using point electrodes to determine target depth. The apparent resistance Ra and chargeability Ma measurements obtained with point electrode excitation of the ground have been used to compute the values of (Ra)l and (Ma)l that would be obtained with a linear array. Continuation of the apparent polarizability profile thus obtained with the linear array gives a value for the depth of the target which agrees closely with that obtained by the continuation of the SP profile. On the other hand, continuation of the profile of the secondary transient signal (VS)L alone, yields a depth of the target which is in agreement with the borehole information. However, it is seen that the secondary transient voltage profiling response splits into two anomalies which fall on either side of the SP and/or (Ma)l anomaly centre, and does not coincide with that of the latter.  相似文献

This paper describes a comprehensive study of the attenuation of Modified Mercalli intensity in New Zealand earthquakes, which has resulted in significantly different and new findings when compared with those of earlier work. The current study used recently revised magnitudes for the 30 events in the carefully selected data set. Magnitudes ranged from ML = 5.0 to Ms = 7.8. Special effort was also put into establishing the depths of the events, which ranged from very shallow to 65 km. An expression of a form also used in peak ground acceleration attenuation studies was adopted, I = a + bM + cr + dlog10r with r being taken as the mean distance from the centre of the fault rupture surface to each isoseismal. A two-step stratified regression analysis was used because it results in more realistic estimates of standard errors, although its mean curves were virtually the same as those derived from the standard one-step method. It was found possible to model accurately the attenuation of the deepest events from regressions of the data of the shallowest events, but the inverse was not true. In a study of the influence of source mechanisms it was found that the attenuation was the same for events with normal and strike-slip faulting. In contrast, events with reverse fault mechanisms were found to have higher intensities (for the same M and r) than normal and strike-slip events, by a factor corresponding to that found by Campbell in a study of peak ground accelerations, although the statistical test was narrowly short of the conventional significance level.  相似文献

有色溶解性有机物(CDOM)广泛存在于水体中,占溶解有机碳(DOC)10%~90%,其浓度影响水环境碳循环过程、污染物质迁移以及水生生物群落的结构和功能。为分析东北地区水库DOC碳循环情况,本文于2015—2020年对第二松花江流域典型水库白山水库和丰满水库进行5次现场观测和室内实验,在分析CDOM吸收特性的基础上,基于Landsat系列卫星利用波段比值法建立CDOM浓度反演模型(R2=0.82),根据实测值CDOM与DOC的强相关性(R2=0.78),进而估算水库DOC浓度。结果表明:(1)利用野外实测数据和Landsat系列卫星能够对东北内陆水库CDOM浓度进行良好反演,(2)2000—2020年白山水库和丰满水库年际CDOM和DOC浓度变化不大,在2010年之后表现出轻微上升趋势,CDOM浓度从支流和干流的汇入到主库区呈现逐渐减少趋势,(3)白山水库和丰满水库M值(CDOM在250和365 nm处吸收系数比值)和S275~295(CDOM在275~295 nm波段处的吸收光谱的斜率)较小、SUVA254<...  相似文献

In this study, the removal of nitrate ions from aqueous solutions with liquid membrane technique has been investigated for different organic solvent types in which solubilized tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TDTMABr) as carrier. n-butyl alcohol, chloroform, and mixture of chloroform + n-hexane (n-hexane 85% + chloroform 15%) were used as organic solvent. Kinetic parameters (k 1d, k 2m, k 2a, t max, R mmax, J mmax, J amax) were calculated from obtained data. time R a values of mixture, butyl alcohol, and chloroform are 0.81, 0.78, and 0.55, respectively. Similarly R d, R m, and t max values of the mixture equal to 0.14, 0.04, and 87.92 min, respectively. This behavior of the system shows the organic solvent type is an effective parameter on separation yield. It can be concluded that the mixture is the most effective organic solvent type among the investigated ones, because liquid membrane systems should be operated within the range of having the R m, R d, and t max values are minimum while R a values are maximum.  相似文献

The paper presents an analysis of the crust and upper mantle structure in the central Fennoscandian shield based on new P- and S-wave 2D velocity models of the BALTIC wide-angle reflection and refraction profiles. Using reprocessing of the old data, new P- and S-wave velocity models and V P /V S ratio distribution were developed. Moving from SW to NE, the thickness of the crust varies strongly, from ∼36 km to extremely thick, 58–64 km, crossing Wiborg rapakivi massif, Saimaa and Outokumpu areas, and Eastern Finland complex. Based on the lateral variations of V P , V P /V S and thickness of the crust, three main blocks of the crust and upper mantle were distinguished from SW to NE: southwestern, associated with Wiborg rapakivi massif; the central, having the highest thickness of the crust; and the northeastern, not well documented, with Archaean basement.  相似文献

Love waves recorded by a long-period seismograph at New Delhi (NDI) from seven earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 to 5.2 in Koyna and Bhatsa on the western coast and one earthquake in Ongole on the eastern coast of the Indian Peninsula have been used to determine the seismic moment for each of the earthquakes by waveform modeling. Transverse component of the synthetic seismogram shows that the maximum amplitude of waveform decreases with an increase of source duration. Thus for an evaluation of the seismic moment by equating the amplitude level of the observed and synthetic waveforms, we must know the source duration. The synthetic seismogram also indicates that a short source duration gives rise to a small but sharp pulse and this pulse is interpreted as anLg wave. Comparison of the observed and synthetic waveforms has been used for a simultaneous evaluation of the source duration and seismic moment. The source durations are found to vary between 2.2 and 4.4 s; for earthquakes with a magnitude range between 4.3 and 5.2 these durations are slightly higher than normal. We obtain moment (M 0) of Ongole earthquake (M L =5.1)as 1.7×1024 dyne-cm; moments of Koyna and Bhatsa earthquakes (4.3M L 5.2) on the western coast lie between 0.7×1023 and 3.6×1023 dyne-cm. Moment (M 0)-magnitude (M L ) relation logM 0=1.5M L +16.0 for the western United States region agrees as well, in general, with the results for the earthquakes in the Indian Peninsula.  相似文献

Abstract

Measurements have been made of the net horizontal force F acting on a sphere moving with horizontal velocity U (Reynolds numbers in the range 102-104) through a stratified fluid rotating about a vertical axis with uniform angular velocity Ω. In both homogeneous and stratified rotating fluids with small Rossby number R(R = Ua ? 1 where a is the radius of the sphere) the force F is of magnitude 2ΩρUV (where ρ is the density of the fluid and V is the volume of the sphere). In a homogeneous fluid the relative directions of F and U were found to depend on the quantity F = 8Ωa 2/UD (where D is the depth of the fluid in which the object is placed (Mason, 1975)). In a rotating stratified fluid the relative directions of F and U are found to depend on the inverse Froude number k(k = Na/U where N 2 = (g/δ)?ρ/?z) provided D > 4aΩ/N. In a homogeneous fluid with F ? 1 the force F is mainly in the U direction (a drag force due to inertial wave radiation) and is ~ ?0.4 |MX 2ΩρUV For F ? 1 a “Taylor column” occurs and the force, in correspondence with theoretical expectations, is ~ - 2Ω |MX UρV In a rotating stratified fluid with N ~2Ω and k ? 1 the force F is mainly in the U direction but is roughly one half of that occurring in the homogeneous situation with F ? 1 (tentatively explained as due to the evanescence of inertia-gravity disturbances). In a rotating stratified fluid with k ? 1 the flow should have no vertical motion (as with F ? 1) and again in correspondence with theoretical expectations the drag is ~ ?2 Ω |MX UρV. In a non-rotating stratified fluid the drag coefficient C D(C D = F U/½?ρU 2) was measured in the range k = 0.1 to 10 and had a maximum value ~ 1.2 for k ~ 3.  相似文献

CO2 flux was measured continuously in a wheat and maize rotation system of North China Plain using the eddy covariance technique to study the characteristic of CO2 exchange and its response to key environmental factors. The results show that nighttime net ecosystem exchange (NEE) varied exponentially with soil temperature. The temperature sensitivities of the ecosystem (Q 10) were 2.94 and 2.49 in years 2002–2003 and 2003–2004, respectively. The response of gross primary productivity (GPP) to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the crop field can be ex-pressed by a rectangular hyperbolic function. Average A max and α for maize were more than those for wheat. The values of α increased positively with leaf area index (LAI) of wheat. Diurnal variations of NEE were significant from March to May and from July to September, but not remarkable in other months. NEE, GPP and ecosystem respiration (R ec) showed significantly seasonal variations in the crop field. The highest mean daily CO2 uptake rate was ?10.20 and ?12.50 gC·m?2?d?1 in 2003 and 2004, for the maize field, respectively, and ?8.19 and ?9.50 gC?m?2·d?1 in 2003 and 2004 for the wheat field, respectively. The maximal CO2 uptake appeared in April or May for wheat and mid-August for maize. During the main growing seasons of winter wheat and summer maize, NEE was controlled by GPP which was chiefly influenced by PAR and LAI. R ec reached its annual maximum in July when R ec and GPP contributed to NEE equally. NEE was dominated by R ec in other months and temperature became a key factor controlling NEE. Total NEE for the wheat field was ?77.6 and ?152.2 gC·m?2·a?1 in years 2002–2003 and 2003–2004, respectively, and ?120.1 and ?165.6 gC·m?2·a?1 in 2003 and 2004 for the maize field, respectively. The cropland of North China Plain was a carbon sink, with annual ?197.6 and ?317.9 gC·m?2·a?1 in years 2002–2003 and 2003–2004, respectively. After considering the carbon in grains, the cropland became a carbon source, which was 340.5 and 107.5 gC·m?2·a?1 in years 2002–2003 and 2003–2004, respectively. Affected by climate and filed managements, inter-annual carbon exchange varied largely in the wheat and maize rotation system of North China Plain.  相似文献

Abstract

Abstract Recently, substantial progress has been made in detection and observation of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in the subsurface using different experimental techniques. However, there is still a lack of appropriate direct methods to measure the saturation of NAPL (θNAPL). This paper provides a guide for estimating θNAPL and water content (θ w ) in unsaturated and saturated sand based on direct measurements of soil dielectric constant (Ka ) and electrical conductivity (σ a ) using time domain reflectometry (TDR). The results show that the previously used dielectric mixing model fails to predict θNAPL in the case of a four-phase system. A new methodology is suggested and exemplified by showing that the measured Ka gives accurate estimation of θNAPL for a three-phase system while in a four-phase system, both θ a and Ka need to be measured. The results show that using the suggested methodology, accurate predictions of θ w (R 2 = 0.9998) and θNAPL lower than 0.20 m3 m-3 (average R 2 = 0.9756) are possible.  相似文献

Based on data of earthquake sequences with MS≥5.0 in Chinese mainland from 1970 to 2004,for different se-quence types and different rupture modes of the main shock,the relationship between aftershock distribution size Rand the magnitude of the main shock M0 has been studied statistically.Considering the rupture mode of the mainshock,we give the quantitative statistical relationships between R and M0 under 95%confidence level for differentsequence types.Qualitatively,lgR,the logarithm of the aftershock distribution size,is positively correlative to theM0,but the data distribution is dispersed.Viewing from different sequence types,the correlation between R and M0is very weak for isolated earthquake type(IET)sequence,R distributes in the range from 5 to 60 km;For main-shock-aftershock type(MAT),lgR is positively correlative to M0;For multiple main shock type(MMT),the core-lation between lgR and M0 is not very obvious when M0≤6.2 and R distributes in the range from 5 to 70 km,whileit shows a linear correlation when M0≥6.3.The statistical results also show that the occupational ratios of differentsequence types for strike-slip and oblique slip are almost the same.But for dip-slip(mostly are thrust mechanisms),the ratio of MAT is higher than that of IET and MMT.Comparing with previous results,it indicates that,when M0is large enough,R is mainly determined by M0 and there is almost no relationship with the rupture mode of themain shock.  相似文献

基于2019年夏季(8月)对岱海水样的实测数据分析,通过运用克里金插值、相关性分析、多元线性逐步回归、主成分分析方法,探究了叶绿素a(Chl.a)的空间分布特征及其与水环境因子的相关关系,并讨论了相应的防治措施。研究显示:Chl.a空间分布呈现由岸边向湖心递减的趋势,总氮(TN)、总磷(TP)、氨氮(NH3-N)、硝态氮(NO-3-N)、正磷酸盐(PO3-4-P)空间分布特征与Chl.a空间分布特征相近,采样期内岱海湖局部区域水质状况已达到富营养状态;Chl.a与浊度(Turbidity)、TP、TN、悬浮物(SS)、pH、NO-3-N、NH3-N、PO3-4-P、蓝绿藻丰度(CYANO)呈极显著正相关,与溶解氧(DO)呈显著负相关,与电导率(Cond.)呈正相关、与氮磷比(TN/TP)呈负相关;各湖区Chl.a与环境因子相关关系不同,全湖逐步线性回归方程为YChl.a=-21.42+8.658XpH-0.865XDO+0.779XNH3-N+0.699XTurbidity+0.502XCYANO;岱海不同湖区因子对Chl.a浓度的影响存在差异,各湖区Chl.a与环境因子相关关系不同,通过岱海与我国其他湖泊Chl.a与环境因子的相关性关系对比分析,湖泊地理属性差异及营养物质输入浓度是影响Chl.a变化的重要因素;本研究岱海的TN/TP平均值为12.23,说明夏季岱海湖Chl.a变化为氮磷共同限制。  相似文献

Evapotranspiration is an important component of the water and energy balance. It is dependent on climate. Precipitation, solar radiation, temperature, humidity, and wind all contribute to the rate of evapotranspiration. In this study, the temporal trends of reference evapotranspiration (ETref) and four main ETref drivers, namely, mean air temperature (Ta), wind speed (u2), net radiation (Rn) and actual vapour pressure (ea) from 1970 to 2009, were calculated based on 75 meteorological stations on the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that the ETref on the Tibetan Plateau decreased on average by 0.6909 mm a‐1a‐1 from 1970 to 2009. Ta and ea showed an increasing trend, whereas u2 and Rn exhibited a decreasing trend. To explore the underlying causes of the ETref variation, an attribution analysis was performed to quantify the contribution of Ta, u2, Rn and ea, which showed that the changes in u2, Rn and ea produced the negative effect, whereas Ta produced the positive effect on ETref rates. The changes in u2 were found to produce the largest decrease (?0.7 mm) in ETref, followed by ea (?0.4 mm) and Rn (?0.1 mm). Although the significant increase in Ta had a large positive effect (0.51 mm) on ETref rates, changes in the other three variables each reduced ETref rates, resulting in an overall negative trend in ETref. — The first empirical duration magnitude (MD) formula is developed and tested for the Northern Morocco Seismic Network (NMSNET). This relationship is obtained by relating the IGN (Instituto Geografico National, Madrid) body-waves mbLgIGN to the duration (), and the epicentral distance (), at 25 analogue stations of the NMSNET for 479 earthquakes with 2.5 mb 5.4, from March 1992 to February 2001. MD estimates are significantly more precise while introducing a correction term for each of these stations, cStaj. The magnitude for the ith event (MD)i is the mean value of individual MDij=–0.14+1.63log10(ij)+0.031(ij)+cStaj. The cStaj corrections reduce considerably the local site effects which influence the recorded durations and cause stations to either overestimate, or underestimate MD up to 0.5 magnitude units. Average station MD residuals (–cStaj) are found to be independent of the distance from the epicenter to at least 10 degrees. It seems evident that regional geological features in the immediate behavior of stations have a systematic effect on the corresponding obtained residuals: older well-consolidated Precambrian crystalline rocks produce high negative residuals (shorter durations), younger unconsolidated sediments produce high positive residuals (longer durations), whereas, intermediate MD site residuals appear to be the result of the effect of various factors, principally age and state of consolidation of the bedrock, combined with the local tectonic.  相似文献
