Solar neutrino in relation to solar activity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
D. Basu 《Solar physics》1992,142(1):205-208
Here we have carried out a power-spectrum analysis of solar nuclear gamma-ray (NGR) flares observed by SMM and HINOTORI satellites. The solar NGR flares show a periodicity of 152 days, confirming the existence of a 152–158 days periodicity in the occurrence of solar activity phenomena and also indicating that the NGR flares are a separate class of solar flares. The power-spectrum analysis of the daily sunspot areas on the Sun for the period 1980–1982 shows a peak around 159 days while sunspot number data do not show any periodicity (Verma and Joshi, 1987). Therefore, only sunspot area data should be treated as an indicator of solar activity and not the daily sunspot number data.  相似文献

The Ulysses flyby of Jupiter has permitted the detection of a variety of quasiperiodic magnetospheric phenomena. In this paper, Unified Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment (URAP) observations of quasiperiodic radio bursts are presented. There appear to be two preferred periods of short-term variability in the Jovian magnetosphere, as indicated by two classes of bursts, one with 40 min periodicity, the other with 15 min periodicity. The URAP radio direction determination capability provides clear evidence that the 40 min bursts originate near the southern Jovian magnetic pole, whereas the source location of the 15 min bursts remains uncertain. These bursts may be the signatures of quasiperiodic electron acceleration in the Jovian magnetosphere; however, only the 40 min bursts occur in association with observed electron bursts of similar periodicity. Both classes of bursts show some evidence of solar wind control. In particular, the onset of enhanced 40 min burst activity is well correlated with the arrival of high-velocity solar wind streams at Jupiter, thereby providing a remote monitor of solar wind conditions at Jupiter.  相似文献

Slow drift (Type II) radio bursts from the sun are believed to be caused by a primary disturbance moving outward through the solar atmosphere with a velocity of about 1000 km/sec. Analysis of the 2 years, 1956 October 1 through 1958 September 30, over the sunspot maximum shows that 45 per cent of these bursts are associated with the subsequent occurrence of terrestrial auroræ and magnetic storms. The mean delay between the radio bursts and the terrestrial disturbances is 33 hr, which is in good accord with the velocity for the disturbing source as deduced from the radio data. Investigation of the properties of the individual slow drift bursts and their association with other solar radio and optical phenomena reveals no completely conclusive criteria to explain why only 45 per cent of the bursts are geomagnetically important. The geomagnetic effects are enhanced, however, if the bursts occur near the equinoxes and if they are accompanied by a flare o'f importance 2 or 3, or by continuum (Type IV) radiation.

In the reverse association, with radio data available for an average 14 hr daily, it is shown that at least 60 per cent of magnetic storms are preceded, within 4 days, by a slow drift burst.  相似文献

Intermediate-term periodicities in solar activity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The presence of intermediate-term periodicities in solar activity, at approximately 323 and 540 days, has been claimed by different authors. In this paper, we have performed a search for them in the historical records of two main indices of solar activity, namely, the daily sunspot areas (cycles 12–21) and the daily Zürich sunspot number (cycles 6–21). Two different methods to compute power spectra have been used, one of them being especially appropriate to deal with gapped time series. The results obtained for the periodicity near 323 days indicate that it has only been present in cycle 21, while in previous cycles no significant evidence for it has been found. On the other hand, a significant periodicity at 350 days is found in sunspot areas and Zürich sunspot number during cycles 12–21 considered all together, also having been detected in some individual cycles. However, this last periodicity must be looked into with care due to the lack of confirmation for it coming from other features of solar activity. The periodicity around 540 days is found in cycles 12, 14, and 17 in sunspot areas, while during cycles 18 and 19 it is present, with a very high significance, in sunspot areas and Zürich sunspot number. It also appears at 528 days in sunspot areas during cycles 12–21. On the other hand, it is important to note the coincidence between the asymmetry, favouring the northern hemisphere, of sunspot areas and solar flares during cycle 19, and the fact that the periodicity at 540 days was only present, with high significance, in that hemisphere during that solar cycle.  相似文献

The short-term periodicities in sunspot numbers, sunspot areas, and flare index data are investigated in detail using the Date Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform (DCDFT) for the full disk of the Sun separately over the rising, the maximum, and the declining portions of solar cycle 23 (1996 – 2006). While sunspot numbers and areas show several significant periodicities in a wide range between 23.1 and 36.4 days, the flare index data do not exhibit any significant periodicity. The earlier conclusion of Pap, Tobiska, and Bouwer (1990, Solar Phys. 129, 165) and Kane (2003, J. Atmos. Solar-Terr. Phys. 65, 1169), that the 27-day periodicity is more pronounced in the declining portion of a solar cycle than in the rising and maximum ones, seems to be true for sunspot numbers and sunspot area data analyzed here during solar cycle 23.  相似文献

An analysis has been carried out on the 32 years of 10 cm solar flux data, published by Covington, to test for evidence of the periodicities found by others using different techniques. Two features with periods of about 25 and 31 days appear to persist throughout the data, but there is no evidence for the 12.6 days periodicity claimed by Dicke and Goldenberg from solar ellipticity measurements, nor for the 12.07 day periodicity claimed by Knight et al. from an analysis of sunspot numbers. A 750 day periodicity is evident during 1970–75; this may correspond to the feature deduced by Sakurai from the sunspot numbers (and claimed to correlate with the neutrino flux); this feature can change in amplitude at other times. The other major feature has a period of about 1100 days, but disappears completely during 1970–75. The above periods are all synodic. On leave of absence at Sterrewacht, Leiden, The Netherlands during 1979/80.  相似文献

We report the observations of weak type III bursts at 73.8, 57.5, 50.0, and 38.5 MHz from Clark Lake Radio Observatory on four days and discuss their characteristics. In addition to Clark Lake data, the magnetogram and sunspot/active region data and the coronal streamer data obtained by HAO's Coronagraph/Polarimeter aboard SMM satellite are used to study the location of the burst sources with respect to the coronal streamers emanating from active regions. It is shown that the bursts occur within or close to the edge of dense coronal streamers implying that the coronal streamers contain open magnetic field lines along which the electrons generating the bursts propagate. The positional analysis of the bursts is used to estimate the variation of coronal electron density with radial distance. On leave from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Kodaikanal, India.  相似文献

We investigate the periodicity in the PMOD composite of the daily total solar irradiance (TSI) from 21 September 1978 to 9 June 2009. Besides the Schwabe cycle period (10.32 years), the quasi-rotation period is found to be statistically significant in TSI, whose value is about 32 days, longer than that in sunspot activity (27 days), and it intermittently appears around the sunspot maximum times. The quasi-rotation period in TSI is inferred to be mainly caused by sunspot activity, but to be modulated by bright features as well. It was previously found that variations of TSI over a Schwabe solar cycle mainly come from the combination of the sunspots’ blocking and the intensification due to bright faculae, plages, and network elements, with a slight dominance of the bright-feature effect during the maximum of the Schwabe cycle. For the sunspot-blocking and the bright-feature effect to contribute to TSI over a Schwabe solar cycle, the former is inferred to lead the latter by 29 days at least.  相似文献

Long-term variations in north-south asymmetry of solar activity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present a new set of data on relative sunspot number (total, northern hemisphere, and southern hemisphere), taken for the 37-yr period 1947 to 1983; this constitutes a particularly coherent and consistent set of data, taken by the same observer (Hisako Koyama) using the same observing instrument. These data are combined with earlier data (White and Trotter, 1977) on the variation of sunspot areas for both solar hemispheres from 1874 to 1971. The combined data, covering 110 years and 10 solar cycles, are examined for periodicity in solar activity north-south asymmetry. We show that, in general, northern hemisphere activity, displayed as either An/(An + As) or Rn/(Rn + Rs), peaks about two years after sunspot minimum. This peak is greater during even cycles, pointing to a 22-yr periodicity in north-south asymmetry in solar activity, suggesting that the asymmetry is related to the 22-yr solar magnetic cycle. We demonstrate that the largest and most protracted period of northern-hemisphere activity excess in the last 110 years has occurred from 1959 to 1970; we show that there is a strong correlation between northern activity excess and a cosmic-ray density gradient perpendicular to the ecliptic plane, pointing southward, which is evident in cosmic-ray diurnal variation data from the Embudo underground cosmic-ray telescope.  相似文献

Periodicities in the occurrence rate of solar proton events   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Power spectral analyses of the time series of solar proton events during the past three solar cycles reveal a periodicity around 154 days. This feature is prominent in all of the cycles combined, cycles 19 and 21 individually but is only weak in cycle 20. These results are consistent with the presence of similar periodicities between 152 and 155 days in the occurrence rate of major solar flares, the sunspot blocking function (P s ), the 10.7 cm radio flux (F 10.7) and the sunspot number (R z ). This suggests that the circa 154-days periodicity may be a fundamental characteristic of the Sun. Periods around 50–52 days are also found in the combined data set and in the three individual cycles in general agreement with the detection of this periodicity in major flares in cycle 19 and inP s ,F 10.7, andR z in cycle 21. The cause of the 155 day period remains unknown. The spectra contain lines (or show power at frequencies) consistent with a model in which the periodicity is caused by differential rotation of active zones and a model in which it is related to beat frequencies between solar oscillations, as proposed by Wolff.  相似文献

We used two methods to investigate the periodic behavior of sunspot counts in four categories for the time period January 1986?–?October 2013. These categories include the counts from simple (A and B), medium (C), large (D, E, and F), and final (final-stage; H) sunspot groups. We used i) the multitaper method with red noise approximation, and ii) the Morlet wavelet transform for periodicity analysis. Our main findings are that 1) the solar rotation periodicity of about 25 to 37 days, which is of obvious significance, is found in all groups with at least a 95 % significance level; 2) the periodic behavior of a cycle is strongly related to its amplitude and group distribution during the cycle; 3) the appearance of periods follows the amplitude of the investigated solar cycles; and that 4) meaningful periods do not appear during the minimum phases of the investigated cycles. We would like to underline that the cyclic behavior of all categories is not exactly the same; there are some differences between these groups. This result can provide a clue for the better understanding of solar cycles.  相似文献

Ionospheric data show that a very large burst of extreme ultraviolet radiation of about 7 ergs cm?2 sec?1 above the earth's atmosphere occurred during the proton flare of August 28, 1966. The time dependence of this burst agrees closely with the 8800 and 10700 MHz solar radio bursts and does not agree with solar radio bursts at frequencies less than 2800 MHz. The soft X-ray enhancement deduced from ionospheric data peaked about 4 min after the EUV burst.  相似文献

Polarization measurements of type III bursts at 23.5 and 29.5 MHz have been compared for several years with indicators of magnetic fields in different height levels such as sunspot data, S-component characteristics, and noise storm data. By applying the Mount-Wilson and Brunner types of the related spot groups there results a positive relationship between the average degree of type III burst polarization and the magnitude or complexity of photospheric magnetic fields. For other parameters (leading spot area, peak intensity of the S-component at 9.1 cm wavelength) such a clear monotonic relation has not been found. Possibly the degree of polarization is influenced by height variations of the emitting level of the type III bursts at a fixed frequency due to variable electron densities. No connection has been detected between the type III burst polarization and noise storm fluxes which may be due to the local distance of the origin of both emissions.  相似文献

We study the periodicity of twisting motions in sunspot penumbral filaments, which were recently discovered from space (Hinode) and ground-based (SST) observations. A sunspot was well observed for 97 minutes by Hinode/SOT in the G-band (4305 Å) on 12 November 2006. By the use of the time?–?space gradient applied to intensity space?–?time plots, twisting structures can be identified in the penumbral filaments. Consistent with previous findings, we find that the twisting is oriented from the solar limb to disk center. Some of them show a periodicity. The typical period is about ≈?four minutes, and the twisting velocity is roughly 6 km s?1. However, the penumbral filaments do not always show periodic twisting motions during the time interval of the observations. Such behavior seems to start and stop randomly with various penumbral filaments displaying periodic twisting during different intervals. The maximum number of periodic twists is 20 in our observations. Studying this periodicity can help us to understand the physical nature of the twisting motions. The present results enable us to determine observational constraints on the twisting mechanism.  相似文献

We have analysed the observations of Solar Ca+K daily plage area for the period 1951-1977 to find evidence for the existence of short period (around 12–13 days) variation in the data. We divided the data in three groups—two corresponding to 10–20‡N and 10–20‡S latitude belts, and one corresponding to the total plage area—and used the power spectrum and autocorrelation techniques for the analysis. Both the techniques clearly show the 27-day periodicity due to solar rotation modulation in all the sets. A 12–13 day periodicity is seen in only 3, out of a total of 57 data sets when autocorrelation technique is used. A generally weak peak around 12–13 days is, however, seen in the power spectrum of all the data sets. The relative power in the 12–13 day peak is found to be significantly higher in those three data sets where the autocorrelation also shows this periodicity. On these two epochs the sunspot area distribution showed the existence of two distinct active longitudes separated by about 140–170 degrees. This seems to be the cause for the existence of a periodicity around 12–13 days in the autocorrelation and enhancement in the relative power of the 12–13 days peak in the power spectrum of these two epochs  相似文献

We investigate the correlation of the occurrence of the herringbone phenomenon in type II solar radio bursts with various flare properties. We show that herringbone is strongly correlated with the intensity of the type II burst: whereas about 21% of all type II bursts show herringbone, about 60% of the most intense bursts contain herringbone. This fact can explain most of the correlations between herringbone and other properties such as intense type III bursts, type IV emission, and high type II starting frequencies. We also show that when this is taken into account, there is no need to postulate two classes of type II burst in order to explain why there appears to be a difference in herringbone occurrence between the set of type II bursts associated with the leading edges of coronal mass ejections, and those not so associated. We argue that the data are consistent with the idea that all coronal type II bursts are due to blast waves from flares.  相似文献

The first statistical results in sunspot distributions in 1996–2004 obtained from the Solar Feature Catalogues (SFC) are presented. A novel robust technique is developed for automated identification of sunspots on SOHO/MDI white-light (WL) full-disk solar images. The technique applies image standardization procedures for elimination of the limb darkening and non-circular image shape, uses edge-detection methods to find the sunspot candidates and their edges and morphological operations to smooth the features and fill in gaps. The detected sunspots are verified with the SOHO/MDI magnetograms by strong magnetic fields being present in sunspots. A number of physical and geometrical parameters of the detected sunspot features are extracted and stored in the relational SFC database including umbra/penumbra masks in the form of run-length data encoding of sunspot bounding rectangles. The detection results are verified by comparison with the manual daily detection results in Meudon and Locarno Observatories in 2002 and by correlation (about 96%) with the 4 year sunspot areas produced manually at NOAA. Using the SFC data, sunspot area distributions are presented in different phases of the solar cycle and hemispheres which reveals a periodicity of the north–south asymmetry with a period of about 7–8 years. The number of sunspots increases exponentially with the area decrease with the index slightly increasing from −1.15 (1997) to −1.34 (2001).  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to investigate the short-term periodicity in the solar radius measurements and to compare with the short periods in sunspot numbers, sunspot areas and flare index data. The spectral analysis of data sets covering a time interval from 26 February 2000 to 26 October 2007 during Solar Cycle 23 were made by using the Date Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform (DCDFT). The power spectrum of solar radius data corrected for the seeing effect gives an evident peak at 25.7 days with the amplitude of 0.034 arcsec, which is slightly different from the peaks of 26.2 and 26.7 days produced by sunspot numbers and sunspot areas data, respectively. Besides, the main peak of 25.7 days detected in the power spectrum of solar radius data is in agreement with the period of 25.5 days, suggested to be the fundamental period of the Sun by Bai and Sturrock (in Nature 350, 141, 1991).  相似文献
