We study transverse loop oscillations triggered by 17flares and filament destabilizations; only 2 such cases have been reported in the literature until now. Oscillation periods are estimated to range over a factor of ∼15, with most values between 2 and 7 min. The oscillations are excited by filament destabilizations or flares (in 6% of the 255 flares inspected, ranging from about C3 to X2). There is no clear dependence of oscillation amplitude on flare magnitude. Oscillations occur in loops that close within an active region, or in loops that connect an active region to a neighboring region or to a patch of strong flux in the quiet Sun. Some magnetic configurations are particularly prone to exhibit oscillations: two active regions showed two, and one region even three, distinct intervals with loop oscillations. The loop oscillations are not a resonance that builds up: oscillations in loops that are excited along their entire length are likely to be near the fundamental resonance mode because of that excitation profile, but asymmetrically excited oscillations clearly show propagating waves that are damped too quickly to build up a resonance, and some cases show multiple frequencies. We discuss evidence that all oscillating loops lie near magnetic separatrices that outline the large-scale topology of the field. All magnetic configurations are more complicated than a simple bipolar region, involving mixed-polarities in the interior or vicinity of the region; this may reflect that the exciting eruptions occur only in such environments, but this polarity mixing likely also introduces the large-scale separatrices that are involved. Often the oscillations occur in conjunction with gradual adjustments in loop positions in response to the triggering event. We discuss the observations in the context of two models: (a) transverse waves in coronal loops that act as wave guides and (b) strong sensitivity to changes in the field sources for field lines near separatrices. Properties that favor model b are (1) the involvement of loops at or near separatrices that outline the large-scale topology of the field, (2) the combined occurrence of oscillations and loop translations, (3) the small period spread and similar decay time scale in a set of oscillating loops in one well-observed event, and (4) the existence of loops oscillating in antiphase with footpoints close together in two cases. All other properties are compatible with either model, except the fact that almost all of the oscillations start away from the triggering event, suggestive of an outward-pushing exciting wave more in line with model a. The spread in periods from event to event suggests that the oscillations may reflect the properties of some driver mechanism that is related to the flare or mass ejection. An analysis of solar radio bursts with temporal fine structure (TFS) at 5730 MHz in relation to the magnetic configuration of the corresponding active regions (AR) is presented. We found that the occurrence of TFS bursts increases with increasing complexity of the AR's magnetic configuration. The degree of polarization of TFS bursts varies over a wide range. Most of these fast bursts with a high degree of polarization were observed in active regions with a simple magnetic configuration β. Most of the unpolarized fast bursts were observed in active regions with the most complicated configuration βγδ. Because bursts that are polarized in different modes have different displacements of position with respect to that of associated microwave bursts, we conclude that there are at least two types of TFS bursts at 5730 MHz. We think that fast bursts that are polarized in the ordinary mode are due to microwave type III bursts.  相似文献

This paper investigates the possibility that ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax cluster are formed by the threshing of nucleated, early-type dwarf galaxies (hereafter dwarf galaxies).
Similar to the results of Côté et al. for the Virgo cluster, we show that the Fornax cluster observations are consistent with a single population in which all dwarfs are nucleated, with a ratio of nuclear to total magnitude that varies slowly with magnitude. Importantly, the magnitude distribution of the UCD population is similar to that of the dwarf nuclei in the Fornax cluster.
The joint population of UCDs and the dwarfs from which they may originate is modelled and shown to be consistent with a Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) profile with a characteristic radius of 5 kpc. Furthermore, a steady-state dynamical model reproduces the known mass profile of Fornax. However, there are a number of peculiarities in the velocity dispersion data that remain unexplained.
The simplest possible threshing model is tested, in which dwarf galaxies move on orbits in a static cluster potential and are threshed if they pass within a radius at which the tidal force from the cluster exceeds the internal gravity at the core of their dark matter halo. This fails to reproduce the observed fraction of UCDs at radii greater than 30 kpc from the core of Fornax.  相似文献

The fundamentals of the whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators are well established in the literature, with several successful proof-of-concept experiments. One remarkable benefit of this technology is the room-temperature operation. This characteristic could be used to build a new generation of radiometers that do not need to be cooled down to cryogenic temperatures to reach high sensitivities. In this article, a study of the viability of technological transfer is undertaken, beginning with a brief review of the theoretical background that will be applied and leading to a proposal for a novel spectro-polarimeter design. Simulations for a radiometer based on WGM resonance are analyzed and compared with state-of-the-art coherent receivers. The results are then discussed, finding that although promising, WGM technology needs R&D in several directions in order to be competitive, whose are suggested by the authors with the idea of inspiring the work of the researchers in the field towards a new direction or approach.  相似文献

Using a sample of 903 APM clusters we investigate whether their dynamical status, as evidenced by the presence of significant substructures, is related to the large-scale structure of the Universe. We find that the cluster dynamical activity is strongly correlated with the tendency of clusters to be aligned with their nearest neighbour and in general with the nearby clusters that belong to the same supercluster. Furthermore, dynamically active clusters are more clustered than the overall cluster population. These are strong indications that clusters develop in a hierarchical fashion by anisotropic merging along the large-scale filaments within which they are embedded.  相似文献

The environmental properties of a sample of 31 hard X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) are investigated, from scales of 500 kpc down to 30 kpc, and are compared to a control sample of inactive galaxies. All the AGN lie in the redshift range  0.4 < z < 0.6  . The accretion luminosity density of the Universe peaks close to this redshift range, and the AGN in the sample have X-ray luminosities close to the knee in the hard X-ray luminosity function, making them representative of the population that dominated this important phase of energy conversion.
Using both the spatial clustering amplitude and near-neighbour counts, it is found that the AGN have environments that are indistinguishable from normal, inactive galaxies over the same redshift range and with similar optical properties. Typically, the environments are of subcluster richness, in contrast to similar studies of high- z quasars, which are often found in clusters with comparable richness to the Abell   R ≥ 0  clusters.
It is suggested that minor mergers with low-mass companions are a likely candidate for the mechanism by which these modest luminosity AGN are fuelled.  相似文献

EUV cyclones are rotating structures in the solar corona, and they are usually rooted in the underlying rotating network magnetic fields in the photosphere. However, their connection with the surrounding magnetic fields remains unknown. Here we report an observational study of four typical cyclones which are rooted in different kinds of magnetic fields. We use Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly data to investigate the rotation of EUV features in cyclones and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager data to study the associated magnetic fields. The results show that,(1) an EUV cyclone rooted in a sunspot rotates with the photospheric magnetic field;(2) two EUV cyclones in two faculae of an active region are connected to the same sunspot of the active region but rotate oppositely;(3) an EUV cyclone is rooted in a coronal hole with weak open magnetic fields;(4) a pair of conjugated cyclones is rooted in magnetic fields that have opposite polarity with opposite directions of rotation. The differences in the spatial extent of a cyclone, characteristics of its rotation and underlying fields indicate that cyclones are ubiquitous over the solar atmosphere and that the magnetic structures relevant to the cyclones are more complicated than expected.  相似文献

The observed Be and B relationships with metallicity clearly support the idea that both elements have a primary origin and that they are produced by the same class of objects. Spallation by particles accelerated during gravitational supernova events (SNII, SNIb/c) seems to be a likely origin. We show, in the context of a model of chemical evolution, that it is possible to solve the Li, Be and B abundance puzzle with the yields recently proposed by Ramaty et al., provided that SNII are unable to accelerate helium nuclei significantly and that different mechanisms are allowed to act simultaneously.  相似文献

The relationship between metric type II radio bursts and solar flares is studied. Well-defined correlations between the properties of type II bursts and the characteristics of associated microwave and soft X-ray bursts are established in two entirely independent data sets. It is shown that the correlations are strongly affected by the wide range of coronal Alfvén velocities involved, comprising values from only 150 up to 800 km s–1, with a typical value of 400 km s–1. After careful data analysis it was inferred that type II bursts are more closely related to the soft X-ray bursts than they are to microwave bursts. The correlations indicate that type II burst shocks are preferably generated by flares with a relatively strong thermal component, and that the shocks are probably ignited by the plasma expansion associated with the 'evaporation' process in the transition region. Although the results imply that the majority of metric type II bursts are caused by flares, a simple geometrical consideration shows that a fraction of non-flare type II bursts cannot be explained by behind-limb events and that roughly 10% of metric type II bursts should be attributed to non-flare coronal mass ejections.  相似文献

Detailed properties of a Pc5 pulsation with large azimuthal wavenumber observed using the STARE radar have recently been reported. A further four examples of this type of pulsation are presented, and it is shown that their properties are generally similar to those of the first example. However, there are some differences, the most important being that the variation of azimuthal phase velocity with latitude is significantly different for different time intervals during individual events, so that a mean phase velocity for a given latitude cannot be defined. When mapped to the equatorial plane in a dipole geomagnetic field, the variation of azimuthal phase velocity with L resembles the gradient-curvature drift of energetic protons in only a few time intervals within the events. The results are interpreted in terms of current theories of drift and bounce resonance of energetic particles with hydromagnetic waves. It is found that no single theory explains all aspects of the observations.  相似文献

Perpendicularly propagating electromagnetic waves in magnetized, multispecies, self-gravitating dusty plasmas are investigated in terms of their wave dispersion properties as well as with respect to their susceptibility to gravitational collapse. In particular, waves on the ordinary as well as extraordinary mode branches are considered. Within the one-dimensional propagation model employed, all modes except the ordinary mode produce density perturbations that can be unstable to gravitational collapse. The wavelengths that are unstable are comparable to the well-known Jeans length for a neutral gas/dust, but there are interesting modifications due to the presence of a magnetic field and charged particles. Furthermore, the effects of the gravitational coupling of a multicomponent plasma to a neutral dust are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Models of solar hard X-ray bursts are considered in which non-thermal electrons are impulsively injected into a coronal magnetic trap. Recognising that the ends of the trap are likely to be rooted in the photosphere and that the density of the ambient atmosphere may thus be highly non-uniform along the field lines, it is shown that the X-ray spectra will initially soften with time, due to collisions, when this non-uniformity is strong enough. This removes a well-known discrepancy in models with uniform density. It is shown also that non-uniformity steepens the electron spectrum required to produce a given observed X-ray spectrum. In consequence the total non-thermal electron energy involved in a given burst is greater than that previously inferred from impulsive injection models.  相似文献

We investigate the formation of binary stellar systems. We consider a model where a 'seed' protobinary system forms, via fragmentation, within a collapsing molecular cloud core and evolves to its final mass by accreting material from an infalling gaseous envelope. This accretion alters the mass ratio and orbit of the binary, and is largely responsible for forming the circumstellar and/or circumbinary discs.
Given this model for binary formation, we predict the properties of binary systems and how they depend on the initial conditions within the molecular cloud core. We predict that there should be a continuous trend such that closer binaries are more likely to have equal-mass components and are more likely to have circumbinary discs than wider systems. Comparing our results with observations, we find that the observed mass-ratio distributions of binaries and the frequency of circumbinary discs as a function of separation are most easily reproduced if the progenitor molecular cloud cores have radial density profiles between uniform and 1/ r (e.g., Gaussian) with near-uniform rotation. This is in good agreement with the observed properties of pre-stellar cores. Conversely, we find that the observed properties of binaries cannot be reproduced if the cloud cores are in solid-body rotation and have initial density profiles which are strongly centrally condensed. Finally, in agreement with the radial-velocity searches for extrasolar planets, we find that it is very difficult to form a brown dwarf companion to a solar-type star with a separation ≲10 au, but that the frequency of brown dwarf companions should increase with larger separations or lower mass primaries.  相似文献

Previous analysis of PV altimeter data has shown that ~25% of the surface of Venus is characterized by low values of reflectivity, interpreted as being due to the presence of porous materials such as soils. However, examination of a corrected reflectivity data set in combination with PV altimeter data suggests that no more than 5% of the surface of Venus is covered by soils more than several to tens of cm in depth. Most regions of apparent low reflectivity are instead interpreted to be due to the presence of small (5–50 cm) roughness elements on the surface that cause diffuse scattering at the 17 cm PV wavelength. Regions of low apparent reflectivity are of interest because of a correlation with tessera, a complex tectonic unit mapped from Venera 15/16 SAR data. Regions of tessera are characterized by a complex system of intersecting ridges and valleys thought to be of tectonic origin. Examination of possible models for the form of diffuse scatterers in the tessera suggests that they are rock fragments and originate from a mass-wasting process that is linked to the rugged nature of the terrain. Further, these diffuse scatterers are associated with other tectonic landforms, suggesting that they originate as part of tectonic deformation of the surface. Viewed from a geologic standpoint, the PV data sets are important tools for understanding tectonic, volcanic, and degradational processes on Venus, as well as for future interpretation of data from the Magellan mission.  相似文献

We consider impulsively excited magnetosonic waves in a highly magnetized coronal loop that is approximated by a straight plasma slab of enhanced mass density. Numerical results reveal that wavelet spectra of time signatures of these waves possess characteristic shapes that depend on the position of the initial pulse: in the case of a pulse launched inside the slab, these spectra are of a tadpole shape, while for a pulse excited in the ambient medium these spectra display more complex structures with branches of long and short-period waves. These short period oscillations correspond to waves that are trapped inside the slab, and the long-period oscillations are associated with waves that propagate through the ambient medium and reach the detection point. These findings are compatible with recent theoretical studies and observations by the solar eclipse coronal imaging system (SECIS).  相似文献

The results of simultaneous observations of oscillations in the chromosphere, transition region, and corona above nine sunspots are presented. The data are obtained through coordinated observing with the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory — SOHO and the Transition Region And Coronal Explorer — TRACE. Oscillations are detected above each umbra. The power spectra show one dominant frequency corresponding to a period close to 3 min. We show that the oscillations in the sunspot transition region can be modeled by upwardly propagating acoustic waves. In the corona the oscillations are limited to small regions that often coincide with the endpoints of sunspot coronal loops. Spectral observations show that oscillations in the corona contribute to the observed oscillations in the TRACE 171 Å channel observations. We show that a recent suggestion regarding a connection between sunspot plumes and 3-min oscillations conflicts with the observations.  相似文献

We have constructed a family of simple models for spiral galaxy evolution to allow us to investigate observational trends in star formation history with galaxy parameters. The models are used to generate broad-band colours from which ages and metallicities are derived in the same way as the data. We generate a grid of model galaxies and select only those that lie in regions of parameter space covered by the sample. The data are consistent with the proposition that the star formation history of a region within a galaxy depends primarily on the local surface density of the gas but that one or two additional ingredients are required to explain the observational data fully. The observed age gradients appear steeper than those produced by the density dependent star formation law, indicating that the star formation law or infall history must vary with galactocentric radius. Furthermore, the metallicity–magnitude and age–magnitude correlations are not reproduced by a local density dependence alone. These correlations require one or both of the following: (i) a combination of mass dependent infall and metal enriched outflow, or (ii) a mass dependent galaxy formation epoch. Distinguishing these possibilities on the basis of current data is extremely difficult.  相似文献

We report results of collisional N -body simulations aimed at studying the N dependence of the dynamical evolution of star clusters. Our clusters consist of equal-mass stars and are in virial equilibrium. Clusters moving in external tidal fields and clusters limited by a cut-off radius are simulated. Our main focus is to study the dependence of the lifetimes of the clusters on the number of cluster stars and the chosen escape condition.
We find that star clusters in external tidal fields exhibit a scaling problem in the sense that their lifetimes do not scale with the relaxation time. Isolated clusters show a similar problem if stars are removed only after their distance to the cluster centre exceeds a certain cut-off radius. If stars are removed immediately after their energy exceeds the energy necessary for escape, the scaling problem disappears.
We show that some stars that gain the energy necessary for escape are scattered to lower energies before they can leave the cluster. As the efficiency of this process decreases with increasing particle number, it causes the lifetimes not to scale with the relaxation time. Analytic formulae are derived for the scaling of the lifetimes in the different cases.  相似文献

Objects in 3:2 mean motion resonance with Neptune are protected from close encounters with Neptune by the resonance. Bodies in orbits with semi-major axis between 39.5 and about 42 AU are not protected by the resonance; indeed due to overlapping secular resonances, the eccentricities of orbits in this region are driven up so that a close encounter with Neptune becomes inevitable. It is thus expected that such orbits are unstable. The list of known Trans-Neptunian objects shows a deficiency in the number of objects in this gap compared to the 43–50 AU region, but the gap is not empty. We numerically integrate models for the initial population in the gap, and also all known objects over the age of the Solar System to determine what fraction can survive. We find that this fraction is significantly less than the ratio of the population in the gap to that in the main belt, suggesting that some mechanism must exist to introduce new members into the gap. By looking at the evolution of the test body orbits, we also determine the manner in which they are lost. Though all have close encounters with Neptune, in most cases this does not lead to ejection from the Solar System, but rather to a reduced perihelion distance causing close encounters with some or all of the other giant planets before being eventually lost from the system, with Saturn appearing to be the cause of the ejection of most of the objects.  相似文献

Three-dimensional non-linear magnetoconvection in a strongly stratified compressible layer exhibits different patterns as the strength of the imposed magnetic field is reduced. There is a transition from a magnetically dominated regime, with small-scale convection in slender hexagonal cells, to a convectively dominated regime, with clusters of broad rising plumes that confine the magnetic flux to narrow lanes where fields are locally intense. Both patterns can coexist for intermediate field strengths, giving rise to flux separation: clumps of vigorously convecting plumes, from which magnetic flux has been excluded, are segregated from regions with strong fields and small-scale convection. A systematic numerical investigation of these different states shows that flux separation can occur over a significant parameter range and that there is also hysteresis. The results are related to the fine structure of magnetic fields in sunspots and in the quiet Sun.  相似文献
