Travel time curves for complex inhomogeneous slightly anisotropic media

Summary The linearization approach is used to compute the travel times in inhomogeneous slightly anisotropic media. The basic formulae are outlined and their accuracy demonstrated in comparison with the exact solution based on the zero-order ray theory and the Backus formula (1965). The linearization is extended also to complex media with curved interfaces. The computer program for calculating travel times in 2D, inhomogeneous, slightly anisotropic, complex media is briefly described. The numerical results obtained for a realistic situation and various types of waves are presented to enable the effects of anisotropy and the effects of inhomogeneity on the resulting travel times to be compared.

Three-dimensional inverse problem for inhomogeneous transversely isotropic media

Summary The basic formula used in the presented paper gives the relation between the P wave travel-time perturbation and the perturbation of an inhomogeneous transversely isotropic medium, expressed by four perturbations of elastic parameters and by two angles of orientation of the axis of symmetry of transverse isotropy in space. The travel time perturbation is computed along the ray in the unperturbed inhomogeneous isotropic medium. Four elastic parameters and two angles are parametrized in the model under study and a system of equations for many rays is constructed. The equations are linear in the sought elastic parameters and nonlinear in the sought angles, and the iterative Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is thus used to solve them. The theoretical 3-D inverse problem was solved in the presented numerical example. The data, simulating teleseismic data, were computed in the direct problem and then inverted. The results indicate the applicability and limitation of the presented algorithm in real problems.

Die Veränderungen der Zirkulation im Laufe des Jahres werden im Zusammenhang mit denen der Monsune beschrieben. Die einzelnen Glieder der Zirkulation werden einer genauen Betrachtung unterzogen, und die Lage ihrer Stromgrenzen, des Hauptstromstriches und von Gegenströmungen wird diskutiert.

The circulation at the surface of the southeast asian waters

Summary The currents at the surface of the southeast Asian waters between 25 N and 20 S and between 85 E and 143 E are represented in six charts for every second month. The variations of the circulation during the course of the year are correlated with those of the monsoons. The different branches of the circulation are taken under consideration and the position of their boundaries, of the current axis and of counter currents are discussed.

Résumé Le travail actuel présente pour six mois alternatifs d'un an, commenÇant par le mois de février, des cartes représentant les courants superficiels rencontrés dans les parages au sud-est de l'Asie orientale compris entre les parallèles de 25 N à 20 S et entre les méridiens de 85 E et 143 E. Les variations annuelles de la circulation océanique et leurs relations avec celles des moussons sont exposées. On étudie d'une manière exacte les branches individuelles de la circulation et on discute la position de leurs limites et celle de l'axe du courant principal et des contre-courants.

     

Thermally driven hydromagnetic instabilities in a non-constantly stratified layer

Summary The convection in a rapidly rotating electrically conducting, fluid horizontal layer of non-constant stratification, permeated by an inhomogeneous magnetic field, is studied. In this connection, a temperature model of the layer is constructed, which creates a structure such that part of the layer is unstably and a part stably stratified. The results obtained are applied to the conditions in the fluid Earth's core.

Z-model of the nearly symmetric hydromagnetic dynamo with electromagnetic core-mantle coupling

Summary The present paper deals with theZ-model of the nearly symmetric hydromagnetic dynamo as a generation mechanism of the Earth's magnetic field. TheZ-model of Braginsky [2] was solved for viscous core-mantle coupling [3]. It is shown that a similarZ-model can also be constructed for electromagnetic core-mantle coupling, or for both effects combined. A new part of the azimuthal velocity appears in the equations, but the character of the boundary layer is not changed too much. No numerical solution is presented.

Summary The Gaussian beam method is applied to vertical seismic profiling in 2-D and 3-D models. Radioactivity and geochemistry of granulites and some related rocks from the saxonian granulite complex

Summary The distribution of radioactive(Th, U, K), major and selected trace(Rb, Sr, Ba, Y, Zr, V, Cr, Ni) elements of granulites from the Saxonian Granulite Complex was studied. Similarly to the South Bohemian granulites, the Saxonian granulites can be divided according to the contents of their major and trace elements into two main groups, groupA containing mostly acid and subacid granulites (K ₂ O>2.5%, SiO ₂ >68%), and groupB containing mostly intermediate and basic granulites (K ₂ O<2.5%, SiO ₂ <68%). Statistically significant differences between groupsA andB were found for all major oxides and several trace elements(Rb, V, Cr, Ni). The Saxonian granulites follow the same calc-alkaline trend as the South Bohemian, granulitesA being placed mostly in the rhyolite field and granulitesB mostly in the dacite, andesite and basalt fields of this trend. The investigated granulites are characterized by a considerable scatter ofTh andU contents accompanied by very variableTh/U ratios; theTh andU concentrations of granulitesA are substantially lower than is usual for rocks of corresponding acidity.

Accuracy of integral migration transformation in dependence on space-time sampling

Summary The accuracy of wave field extrapolation is studied with respect to the discretization of field data and integral extrapolator. Assuming a far-field approximation of the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld solution for a two-dimensional scalar wave equation, the minimum and the maximum transmitted frequency are expressed as functions of the sampling intervals t, x, and the half-width x₀ and angle _a of the migration aperture. The theoretical limitation of the transmitted frequency band is tested on numerical examples.

Summary The morphology of the Wadati-Benioff zone in the region of Southern Kuriles and Hokkaido, based on the distribution of 4015 earthquake foci, verified the existence of an intermediate depth aseismic gap and its relation to active andesitic volcanism. A paleosubduction zone activated by an intermediate depth collision with the active subduction zone was found and described.

Influence of the IMF sector boundaries on cosmic rays and tropospheric vorticity

Summary The effect of the IMF sector boundary crossing (IMF SBC) in the vorticity area index (VAI) — the well-known dip in the VAI after IMF SBC — is found to be independent of the IMF SBC effect in the cosmic ray flux. This finding refutes a recent suggestion by Lundstedt [1] that the IMF SBC effect in VAI is caused by a decrease in cosmic ray flux, but supports the concept of the IMF SBC effects in the ionosphere and atmosphere developed by Latovika [2–4]. Cosmic rays seem to affect the troposphere in another way.

Geomagnetic field from the Earth's core: Its westward drift rate and some probable global-tectonics implications

Summary Sets of virtual poles corresponding to sets of geomagnetic field values at equidistant points, lying along circles of latitude, were defined on the basis of the 1980 IGRF extending to degree and order 8. Certain places on the Earth's surface yield virtual poles lying very close together. The segments of the virtual pole paths, corresponding to these places, have a large curvature. The mentioned places of the Earth's surface are supposed to be areas with a low rate of the westward drift. They form continuous zones that show a certain relation to global-tectonics features.
