Transition metal stable isotope signatures can be useful for tracing both natural and anthropogenic signals in the environment, but only if the mechanisms responsible for fractionation are understood. To investigate isotope fractionations due to electrochemistry (or redox processes), we examine the stable isotope behavior of iron and zinc during the reduction reaction  + 2e = Mmetal as a function of electrochemical driving force, temperature, and time. In all cases light isotopes are preferentially electroplated, following a mass-dependent law. Generally, the extent of fractionation is larger for higher temperatures and lower driving forces, and is roughly insensitive to amount of charge delivered. The maximum fractionations are δ56/54Fe = −4.0‰ and δ66/64Zn = −5.5‰, larger than observed fractionations in the natural environment and larger than those predicted due to changes in speciation. All the observed fractionation trends are interpreted in terms of three distinct processes that occur during an electrochemical reaction: mass transport to the electrode, chemical speciation changes adjacent to the electrode, and electron transfer at the electrode. We show that a large isotope effect adjacent the electrode surface arises from the charge-transfer kinetics, but this effect is attenuated in cases where diffusion of ions to the electrode surface becomes the rate-limiting step. Thus while a general increase in fractionation is observed with increasing temperature, this appears to be a result of thermally enhanced mass transport to the reacting interface rather than an isotope effect associated with the charge-transfer kinetics. This study demonstrates that laboratory experiments can successfully distinguish isotopic signatures arising from mass transport, chemical speciation, and electron transfer. Understanding how these processes fractionate metal isotopes under laboratory conditions is the first step towards discovering what role these processes play in fractionating metal isotopes in natural systems.

Redox processes are ubiquitous in Earth science and are often associated with large isotope fractionations. In a previous study, voltage-dependent amplification of stable isotope fractionation was observed for an Fe reduction process. Here, we describe experiments showing a similar effect for a second transition metal, zinc. After electrochemical reduction, the composition of plated Zn metal is enriched in the light isotope (64Zn) with respect to the Zn2+ leftover in solution, with a voltage-dependent fractionation factor. Results from voltage-dependent electroplating experiments are in good agreement with a second data set following equilibrium fractional isotope evolution of Zn isotopes during an electroplating process which stepwise removes most of the Zn from the aqueous reservoir. Taken together, the results indicate a voltage-dependent isotope fractionation (in permil) of 66Zn with respect to 64Zn to be equal to −3.45 to 1.71 V. The negative slope trend is in contrast with previously published results on iron isotope fractionation during electroplating which shows a positive slope. These results are interpreted using an extension of Marcus theory, which predicts isotope fractionations as a function of driving force in an electrochemical system. Taken together with observations of natural fractionation of redox-sensitive and non redox-active elements, our modified Marcus theory provides a framework for quantitatively predicting transition metal isotope geochemical signatures during environmentally relevant redox processes in terms of simple energetic parameters.

Isotope fractionation of electroplated Fe was measured as a function of applied electrochemical potential. As plating voltage was varied from −0.9 V to 2.0 V, the isotopic signature of the electroplated iron became depleted in heavy Fe, with δ56Fe values (relative to IRMM-14) ranging from −0.18(±0.02) to −2.290(±0.006) ‰, and corresponding δ57Fe values of −0.247(±0.014) and −3.354(±0.019) ‰. This study demonstrates that there is a voltage-dependent isotope fractionation associated with the reduction of iron. We show that Marcus’s theory for the kinetics of electron transfer can be extended to include the isotope effects of electron transfer, and that the extended theory accounts for the voltage dependence of Fe isotope fractionation. The magnitude of the electrochemically-induced fractionation is similar to that of Fe reduction by certain bacteria, suggesting that similar electrochemical processes may be responsible for biogeochemical Fe isotope effects. Charge transfer is a fundamental physicochemical process involving Fe as well as other transition metals with multiple isotopes. Partitioning of isotopes among elements with varying redox states holds promise as a tool in a wide range of the Earth and environmental sciences, biology, and industry.

Fe released into solution is isotopically lighter (enriched in the lighter isotope) than hornblende starting material when dissolution occurs in the presence of the siderophore desferrioxamine mesylate (DFAM). In contrast, Fe released from goethite dissolving in the presence of DFAM is isotopically unchanged. Furthermore, Δ56Fesolution-hornblende for Fe released to solution in the presence of ligands varies with the affinity of the ligand for Fe. The extent of isotopic fractionation of Fe released from hornblende also increases when experiments are agitated continuously. The Fe isotope fractionation observed during hornblende dissolution with organic ligands is attributed predominantly to retention of 56Fe in an altered surface layer, while the lack of isotopic fractionation during goethite dissolution in DFAM is consistent with the lack of an altered layer. When a siderophore-producing soil bacterium is added to the system (without added organic ligands), Fe released to solution from both hornblende and goethite differs isotopically from Fe in the bulk mineral: Δ56Fesolution-starting material = −0.56 ± 0.19 (hornblende) and −1.44 ± 0.16 (goethite). Increased isotopic fractionation is attributed in this case to the fact that as bacterial respiration depletes the system in oxygen and aqueous Fe is reduced, equilibration between aqueous ferrous and ferric iron creates a pool of isotopically heavy ferric iron that is assimilated by bacterial cells. Adsorption of isotopically heavy ferrous iron (Fe(II) enriched in the heavier isotope) or precipitation of isotopically heavy Fe minerals may also contribute to observed fractionations. To test whether these Fe isotope signatures are recorded in natural systems, we also investigated extractions of samples of soils from which the bacteria were isolated. These extractions show variability in the isotopic signatures of exchangeable Fe and Fe oxyhydroxide fractions from one soil sample to another, but exchangeable Fe is observed to be lighter than Fe in soil Fe oxyhydroxides and hornblende. This observation is consistent with isotopically light Fe-organic complexes in soil pore water derived from the Fe-silicate starting materials in the presence of growing microorganisms, as documented in experiments reported here. The contributions from phenomena including organic ligand-promoted nonstoichiometric dissolution of Fe silicates, uptake of ferric iron by organisms, adsorption of isotopically heavy ferrous iron, and precipitation of iron minerals should create complex isotopic signatures in soils. Better understanding of these processes and the timescales over which they contribute to fractionation is needed.

High-precision Ni isotopic variations are reported for the metal phase of equilibrated and unequilibrated ordinary chondrites, carbonaceous chondrites, iron meteorites, mesosiderites, and pallasites. We also report new Zn and Cu isotopic data for some of these samples and combine them with literature Fe, Cu, and Zn isotope data to constrain the fractionation history of metals during nebular (vapor/solid) and planetary (metal/sulfide/silicate) phase changes. The observed variations of the 62Ni/58Ni, 61Ni/58Ni, and 60Ni/58Ni ratios vary linearly with mass difference and define isotope fractionation lines in common with terrestrial samples. This implies that Ni was derived from a single homogeneous reservoir. While no 60Ni anomaly is detected within the analytical uncertainties, Ni isotopic fractionation up to 0.45‰ per mass-difference unit is observed. The isotope compositions of Ni and Zn in chondrites are positively correlated. We suggest that, in ordinary chondrites, exchange between solid phases, in particular metal and silicates, and vapor followed by mineral sorting during accretion are the main processes controlling these isotopic variations. The positive correlation between Ni and Zn isotope compositions contrasts with a negative correlation between Ni (and Zn) and Cu isotope compositions, which, when taken together, do not favor a simple kinetic interpretation. The observed transition element similarities between different groups of chondrites and iron meteorites are consistent with the genetic relationships inferred from oxygen isotopes (IIIA/pallasites and IVA/L chondrites). Copper is an exception, which we suggest may be related to separate processing of sulfides either in the vapor or during core formation.

Fractionation of Mo isotopes during adsorption to manganese oxides is a primary control on the global ocean Mo isotope budget. Previous attempts to explain what drives the surprisingly large isotope effect δ97/95Modissolved-δ97/95Moadsorbed=1.8 have not successfully resolved the fractionation mechanism. New evidence from extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis and density functional theory suggests that Mo forms a polymolybdate complex on the surfaces of experimental and natural samples. Mo in this polynuclear structure is in distorted octahedral coordination, while Mo remaining in solution is predominantly in tetrahedral coordination as . Our results indicate that the difference in coordination environment between dissolved Mo and adsorbed Mo is the cause of isotope fractionation. The molecular mechanism of metal isotope fractionation in this system should enable us to explain and possibly predict metal isotope effects in other systems where transition metals adsorb to mineral surfaces.

Ion-exchange fractionation of copper and zinc isotopes
Whether transition element isotopes can be fractionated at equilibrium in nature is still uncertain. Standard solutions of Cu and Zn were eluted on an anion-exchange resin, and the isotopic compositions of Cu (with respect to Zn) of the eluted fractions were measured by multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. It was found that for pure Cu solutions, the elution curves are consistent with a 63Cu/65Cu mass fractionation coefficient of 0.46‰ in 7 mol/L HCl and 0.67‰ in 3 mol/L HCl between the resin and the solution. Batch fractionation experiments confirm that equilibrium fractionation of Cu between resin and 7 mol/L HCl is ∼0.4‰ and therefore indicates that there is no need to invoke kinetic fractionation during the elution. Zn isotope fractionation is an order of magnitude smaller, with a 66Zn/68Zn fractionation factor of 0.02‰ in 12 mol/L HCl. Cu isotope fractionation results determined from a chalcopyrite solution in 7 mol/L HCl give a fractionation factor of 0.58‰, which indicates that Fe may interfere with Cu fractionation.Comparison of Cu and Zn results suggests that the extent of Cu isotopic fractionation may signal the presence of so far unidentified polynuclear complexes in solution. In contrast, we see no compelling reason to ascribe isotope fractionation to the coexistence of different oxidation states. We further suggest that published evidence for iron isotopic fractionation in nature and in laboratory experiments may indicate the distortion of low-spin Fe tetrahedral complexes. The isotope geochemistry of transition elements may shed new light on their coordination chemistry. Their isotopic fractionation in the natural environment may be interpreted using models of thermodynamic fractionation.

Oxygen isotope fractionation factors between calcium carbonates and water have been applied to ancient marine geochemistry principally for the purpose of geothermometry. The problem was encountered, however, with respect to the direction and magnitude of oxygen isotope fractionation between calcite and aragonite at thermodynamic equilibrium. This basically involves sound understanding of both thermodynamics and kinetics of oxygen isotope fractionation between inorganically precipitated carbonate and water at low temperatures. Thus the crucial issues are to acknowledge the processes of chemical reaction and isotopic exchange during precipitation of CaCO3 minerals in solution, the kinetic mechanism of isotope equilibrium or disequilibrium, the effect of polymorphic transition from metastable aragonite to stable calcite under hydrous or anhydrous conditions, and the presence or absence of isotope salt effect on oxygen isotope exchange between carbonate and water in response to the hydrous or anhydrous conditions at thermodynamic equilibrium. Because good agreements exist in carbonate–water oxygen isotope fractionation factors between theoretical calculations and experimental determinations, it is encouraging to applying the thermodynamic and kinetic data to isotopic paleothermometry and geochemical tracing.

Iron(Fe) is abundant in nature while molybdenum(Mo) is the most abundant transition metal in seawater. Due to their high sensitivity to the redox state of the environment, the isotopic compositions of Fe and Mo as well as variations have been widely used to probe the redox conditions and the evolution of ancient ocean chemistry in favor of improved analytical techniques. Here, we summarized isotopic fractionation mechanisms and natural distribution of both iron and molybdenum isotopes, and further we summarized and partially reinterpreted the redox evolution of ancient oceans through time based on available Fe-Mo data compiled in this study. The process that causes the largest iron isotope fractionation is redox reaction and the iron in oxidation state is generally enriched in 56Fe. Biotic and abiotic pyrite formations also produce a large Fe isotope fractionations. Isotopic fractionation of molybdenum in seawater is mainly caused by the adsorption process of dissolved Mo onto ferromanganese oxides or hydroxides in sediments. Fe-Mn (hydro)oxides tend to adsorb isotopically light molybdenum resulting in the isotopic composition of Mo in seawater heavier. However, the Mo sinks in euxinic settings cause almost no molybdenum isotope fractionation. The Fe Mo isotope isotopic records through geological timegenerally suggest similar ocean redox evolution: Oceans older than 2.3 Ga was mainly dominated by ferruginous condition, and there was a slight increase in oxygen content between 2.6 and 2.5 Ga. Earth’s surface was initially oxidized during 2.3 to 1.8 Ga, during which euxinic deposition of sulfide was elevated. Euxinic waters may have expanded greatly between 1.8 and 0.8 Ga, and after that, Earth’s surface had being gradually oxidized and the euxinic waters shrank substantially. Finally, suggestions are proposed for further work on the Fe-Mo isotope research in the context of ancient ocean chemistry.

Iron isotopic compositions measured in chondrules from various chondrites vary between δ57Fe/54Fe = +0.9‰ and −2.0‰, a larger range than for igneous rocks. Whether these compositions were inherited from chondrule precursors, resulted from the chondrule-forming process itself or were produced by later parent body alteration is as yet unclear. Since iron metal is a common phase in some chondrules, it is important to explore a possible link between the metal formation process and the observed iron isotope mass fractionation. In this experimental study we have heated a fayalite-rich composition under reducing conditions for heating times ranging from 2 min to 6 h. We performed chemical and iron isotope analyses of the product phases, iron metal and silicate glass. We demonstrated a lack of evaporation of Fe from the silicate melt in similar isothermal experiments performed under non-reducing conditions. Therefore, the measured isotopic mass fractionation in the glass, ranging between −0.32‰ and +3.0‰, is attributed to the reduction process. It is explained by the faster transport of lighter iron isotopes to the surface where reduction occurs, and is analogous to kinetic isotope fractionation observed in diffusion couples [Richter, F.M., Davis, A.M., Depaolo, D.J., Watson, E.B., 2003. Isotope fractionation by chemical diffusion between molten basalt and rhyolite. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta67, 3905-3923]. The metal phase contains 90-99.8% of the Fe in the system and lacks significant isotopic mass fractionation, with values remaining similar to that of the starting material throughout. The maximum iron isotope mass fractionation in the glass was achieved within 1 h and was followed by an isotopic exchange and re-equilibration with the metal phase (incomplete at ∼6 h). This study demonstrates that reduction of silicates at high temperatures can trigger iron isotopic fractionation comparable in its bulk range to that observed in chondrules. Furthermore, if metal in Type I chondrules was formed by reduction of Fe silicate, our observed isotopic fractionations constrain chondrule formation times to approximately 60 min, consistent with previous work.

We have critically reevaluated equilibrium iron isotope fractionation factors for oxide and sulfide minerals using recently acquired data obtained by Mössbauer spectroscopy and inelastic nuclear resonant X-ray scattering (INRXS) synchrotron radiation. Good agreement was observed in the iron β-factors of metallic iron (α-Fe) and hematite calculated using both Mössbauer- and INRXS-derived data, which supports the validity and reliability of the calculations. Based on this excellent agreement, we suggest the use of the present data on the iron β-factors of hematite as a reference. The previous Mössbauer-derived iron β-factor for magnetite has been modified significantly based on the Fe-sublattice density of states obtained from the INRXS experiments. This resolves the disagreement between naturally observed iron isotope fractionation factors for mineral pairs involving magnetite and those obtained from the calculated β-factors. The correctness of iron β-factor for pyrite has been corroborated by the good agreement with experimental data of sulfur isotope geothermometers of pyrite-galena and pyrite-sphalerite. A good correlation between the potential energy of the cation site, the oxidation state of iron and the iron β-factor value has been established. Specifically, ferric compounds, which have a higher potential energy of iron than ferrous compounds, have higher β-factors. A similar dependence of β-factors on the oxidation state and potential energy could be extended to other transition metals. Extremely low values of INRXS-derived iron β-factors for troilite and Fe3S significantly widen the range of iron β-factors for covalently bonded compounds.

We report new nitrogen isotopic data in metals of H-, L- and one LL -chondrites, with N abundances in the range of ∼0.3 to 3.3 ppm and half of these <1 ppm. Nitrogen isotopic signatures in metals with low indigenous N concentrations are modified by cosmic ray spallation components; corrections are required to determine the indigenous N signatures. The metals of type 4 and 5 show uniform indigenous nitrogen (δ15N = −6.8 ± 0.5 ‰) and confirm a reported possible genetic association of chondritic metal with metal in IIE and IVA iron meteorites. Distinct isotopic signatures are observed in two metal samples of the Portales Valley (H6) meteorite which both are inconsistent with signatures in H4 and H5 chondrites, but possibly reveal a record of impact-induced melting and metamorphism on the parent asteroid. Anomalous nitrogen signatures in metals of type 3 chondrites, on the other hand, may reflect residues of surviving presolar isotopic signatures.

A quantitative model of recent laboratory experiments on carbon isotope fractionation by methane-oxidizing bacteria is proposed. The simulated experimental apparatus consists of a bacterial culture with a constant liquid volume, a gas headspace and a methane bubbling mechanism. The relative effects of bacterial growth and transport phenomena that do not depend on cell density are clarified. In all calculations, gas-liquid mass transfer is defined by unconstrained model parameters. Limited mass transfer from the culture into the headspace, rather than the incomplete dissolution of substrate-rich bubbles, seems to have caused an apparent decrease in the measured carbon isotope fractionation. The experimenters attributed this fractionation shift to a growing imbalance among kinetic rates as methane consumption by bacteria increases. Model predictions support this interpretation but also show that changes in carbon isotope fractionation in the course of the experiments cannot be unambiguously correlated with bacterial cell density unless gas-liquid mass transfer parameters are calibrated. Simulations of other laboratory experiments indicate that a reported change in carbon isotope fractionation could, in part at least, be the result of experimental conditions rather than the emergence of a different methane oxidation pathway postulated by the experimenters. A careful evaluation of mass transfer from the liquid culture into the gas headspace is warranted in this type of experiments since isotope fractionation factors are likely to be used in a wide variety of environmental contexts.

Stable iron isotope ratios in three soils (two Podzols and one Cambisol) were measured by MC-ICPMS to investigate iron isotope fractionation during pedogenic iron transformation and translocation processes under oxic conditions. Podzolization is a soil forming process in which iron oxides are dissolved and iron is translocated and enriched in the subsoil under the influence of organic ligands. The Cambisol was studied for comparison, representing a soil formed by chemical weathering without significant translocation of iron. A three-step sequential extraction procedure was used to separate operationally-defined iron mineral pools (i.e., poorly-crystalline iron oxides, crystalline iron oxides, silicate-bound iron) from the soil samples. Iron isotope ratios of total soil digests were compared with those of the separated iron mineral pools. Mass balance calculations demonstrated excellent agreement between results of sequential extractions and total soil digestions. Systematic variations in the iron isotope signature were found in the Podzol profiles. An enrichment of light iron isotopes of about 0.6‰ in δ57Fe was found in total soil digests of the illuvial Bh horizons which can be explained by preferential translocation of light iron isotopes. The separated iron mineral pools revealed a wide range of δ57Fe values spanning more than 3‰ in the Podzol profiles. Strong enrichments of heavy iron isotopes in silicate-bound iron constituting the residue of weathering processes, indicated the preferential transformation of light iron isotopes during weathering. Iron isotope fractionation during podzolization is probably linked to the ligand-controlled iron translocation processes. Comparison of iron isotope data from eluvial and illuvial horizons of the Podzol profiles revealed that some iron must have been leached out of the profile. However, uncertainties in the initial iron content and iron isotopic composition of the parent materials prevented thorough mass balance calculations of iron fluxes within the profiles. In contrast to the Podzol profiles, the Cambisol profile displayed uniform δ57Fe values across soil depth and showed only a small enrichment of light iron isotopes of about 0.4‰ in the poorly-crystalline iron oxide pool extracted by 0.5 M HCl. This work demonstrates that significant iron isotope fractionations can occur during pedogenesis in oxic environments under the influence of organic ligands. Our findings provide new insights into fractionation mechanisms of iron isotopes and will help in the development of stable iron isotopes as tracers for biogeochemical iron cycling in nature.
