A comprehensive analysis of steady flow patterns in saturated and unsaturated, possibly heterogeneous, isotropic soils is presented. It is shown that, at any point, the divergence of the unit tangent vector field to the streamlines is equal to the directional derivative along the streamlines of the orthogonal cross-sectional area of an infinitesimal stream tube divided by that area and also equal to the mean curvature of the surface of constant total head. Expressions are derived for the distribution of the flux, the water content, the velocity, the hydraulic conductivity, the total head, and the pressure head along a stream line or an infinitesimal, stream tube. Among the results is a simpler derivation, further interpretation, and extension of earlier work on calculating the hydraulic conductivity distribution from detailed measurements of the total head distribution in combination with measurements of the hydraulic conductivity at a few locations. In the last section, the jumps of various quantities at an interface are discussed.  相似文献

A visual basic spreadsheet macro for recession curve analysis   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Posavec K  Bacani A  Nakić Z 《Ground water》2006,44(5):764-767
A Visual Basic program for an Excel spreadsheet was written to construct a master recession curve (MRC), using the adapted matching strip method, for recession analysis of ground water level time series. The program uses five different linear/nonlinear regression models to adjust individual recession segments to their proper positions in the MRC. The program can also be used to analyze the recession segments of other time series, such as daily stream discharge or stage. Some examples of field data from Croatia are used to illustrate the usefulness of its application.  相似文献

An interactive program written for an APPLE II+ 48K computer is presented which solves Glover's (1960) analytical solution for recharge from a rectangular basin. The program is capable of graphically displaying the rise and decline of the recharge mound for either an infinite homogeneous medium or for a stream aquifer system.  相似文献

The Shenandoah Watershed Study (established in 1979) and the Virginia Trout Stream Sensitivity Study (established in 1987) serve to increase understanding of hydrological and biogeochemical changes in western Virginia mountain streams that occur in response to acidic deposition and other ecosystem stressors. The SWAS-VTSSS program has evolved over its 40+ year history to consist of a temporally robust and spatially stratified monitoring framework. Currently stream water is sampled for water quality bi-hourly during high-flow events at three sites and weekly at four sites within Shenandoah National Park (SHEN), and quarterly at 72 sites and on an approximately decadal frequency at ~450 sites within the wider western Virginia Appalachian region. Stream water is evaluated for pH, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), base cations (calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium ion), acid anions (sulphate, nitrate and chloride), silica, ammonium, and conductivity with a subset of samples evaluated for monomeric aluminium and dissolved organic carbon. Hourly stream discharge (four sites) and in-situ measurements of conductivity, water and air temperature (three sites) are also measured within SHEN. Here we provide an overview and timeline of the SWAS-VTSSS stream water monitoring program, summarize the field and laboratory methods, describe the water chemistry and hydrologic data sets, and document major watershed disturbances that have occurred during the program history. Website links and instructions are provided to access the stream chemistry and time-series monitoring data in open-access federal databases. The purpose of this publication is to promote awareness of these unique, long-term data sets for wider use in catchment studies. The water chemistry and hydrologic data can be used to investigate a wide range of biogeochemical research questions and provide key inputs for models of these headwater stream ecosystems. SWAS-VTSSS is an ongoing program and quality assured data sets are uploaded to the databases annually.  相似文献

A circuit design is reported which is demonstrated to be capable of receiving and recording the underwater sound of inter-particle collisions on natural stream beds during the process of bedload transport. Field trials were undertaken in a natural stream with sand-sized bedload particles. The results obtained, for a constant stream stage, give support to the idea of the occurrence of short period oscillations in the rate of bedload transport.  相似文献

Quantifying the relative contributions of different sources of water to a stream hydrograph is important for understanding the hydrology and water quality dynamics of a given watershed. To compare the performance of two methods of hydrograph separation, a graphical program [baseflow index (BFI)] and an end‐member mixing analysis that used high‐resolution specific conductance measurements (SC‐EMMA) were used to estimate daily and average long‐term slowflow additions of water to four small, primarily agricultural streams with different dominant sources of water (natural groundwater, overland flow, subsurface drain outflow, and groundwater from irrigation). Because the result of hydrograph separation by SC‐EMMA is strongly related to the choice of slowflow and fastflow end‐member values, a sensitivity analysis was conducted based on the various approaches reported in the literature to inform the selection of end‐members. There were substantial discrepancies among the BFI and SC‐EMMA, and neither method produced reasonable results for all four streams. Streams that had a small difference in the SC of slowflow compared with fastflow or did not have a monotonic relationship between streamflow and stream SC posed a challenge to the SC‐EMMA method. The utility of the graphical BFI program was limited in the stream that had only gradual changes in streamflow. The results of this comparison suggest that the two methods may be quantifying different sources of water. Even though both methods are easy to apply, they should be applied with consideration of the streamflow and/or SC characteristics of a stream, especially where anthropogenic water sources (irrigation and subsurface drainage) are present. Calibration of base flow separation methods with streamflow conductivity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The conductivity mass-balance (CMB) method can be used to calibrate analytical base flow separation methods. The principal CMB assumptions are base flow conductivity is equal to streamflow conductivity at lowest flows, runoff conductivity is equal to streamflow conductivity at highest flows, and base flow and runoff conductivities are assumed to be constants over the period of record. To test the CMB assumptions, fluid conductivities of ground water, surface runoff, and streamflow were measured during wet and dry conditions in a 12-km(2) stream basin. Ground water conductivities at wells varied an average of 6% from dry to wet conditions, while stream conductivities varied 58%. Shallow ground water conductivity varied significantly with distance from the stream, with lowest conductivities of 87 microS/cm near the divide, a maximum of 520 microS/cm 59 m from the stream, and 215 microS/cm 22 m from the stream. Runoff conductivities measured in three rain events remained nearly constant, with lower conductivities of 35 microS/cm near the divide and 50 microS/cm near the stream. The CMB method was applied to the records from 10 USGS stream-gauging stations in Texas, Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida to calibrate the USGS base flow separation technique, HYSEP, by varying the time parameter 2N*. There is a statistically significant relationship between basin areas and calibrated values of 2N*, expressed as N = 0.46A(0.44), with N in days and A in km(2). The widely accepted relationship N = 0.83A(0.2) is not valid for these basins. Other analytic methods can also be calibrated with the CMB method.  相似文献

Optimized system to improve pumping rate stability during aquifer tests   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aquifer hydraulic properties are commonly estimated using aquifer tests, which are based on an assumption of a uniform and constant pumping rate. Substantial uncertainties in the flow rate across the borehole-formation interface can be induced by dynamic head losses, caused by rapid changes in borehole water levels early in an aquifer test. A system is presented that substantially reduces these sources of uncertainty by explicitly accounting for dynamic head losses. The system which employs commonly available components (including a datalogger, pressure transducers, a variable-speed pump motor, a flow controller, and flowmeters), is inexpensive, highly mobile, and easily set up. It optimizes the flow rate at the borehole-formation interface, making it suitable for any type of aquifer test, including constant, step, or ramped withdrawal and injection, as well as sinusoidal. The system was demonstrated for both withdrawal and injection tests in three aquifers at the Savannah River Site. No modifications to the control system were required, although a small number of characteristics of the pumping and monitoring system were added to the operating program. The pumping system provided a statistically significant, constant flow rate with time. The range in pumping variability (95% confidence interval) was from +/- 2.58 x 10(-4) L/sec to +/- 9.07 x 10(-4) L/sec, across a wide range in field and aquifer conditions.  相似文献

An aquifer, in a stream/aquifer system, acts as a storage reservoir for groundwater. Groundwater pumping creates stream depletion that recharges the aquifer. As wells in the aquifer are moved away from the stream, the aquifer acts to filter out annual fluctuations in pumping; with distance the stream depletion tends to become equal to the total pumping averaged as an annual rate, with only a small fluctuation. This is true for both a single well and an ensemble of wells. A typical growing season in much of the western United States is 3 to 4 months. An ensemble of irrigation wells spread more or less uniformly across an aquifer several miles wide, pumping during the growing season, will deplete the stream by approximately one-third of the total amount of water pumped during the growing season. The remaining two-thirds of stream depletion occurs outside the growing season. Furthermore, it takes more than a decade of pumping for an ensemble of wells to reach a steady-state condition in which the impact on the stream is the same in succeeding years. After a decade or more of pumping, the depletion is nearly constant through the year, with only a small seasonal fluctuation: ±10%. Conversely, stream depletion following shutting down the pumping from an ensemble of wells takes more than a decade to fully recover from the prior pumping. Effectively managing a conjunctive groundwater and surface water system requires integrating the entire system into a single management institution with a long-term outlook.  相似文献

Playfair's law (J. Playfair, illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth, 1802) requires any two tributaries in a river network to lower at the same rate near their junction. Although this law holds exactly at the junction, it is unclear how well it holds in the vicinity of the junction. This issue has practical importance because Playfair's law has been used to estimate parameters for detachment‐limited models of erosion. If the incision rate of a stream is modelled as βAmSn, where β is an erodibility parameter, A is the area drained by the stream, and S is the local gradient of the channel, then the ratio of the parameters m/n can be estimated from junctions by assuming that Playfair's law holds over the distance used to determine S for each tributary. In this paper, Playfair's law and associated m/n estimates are evaluated for simulated basins with constant and temporally varying uplift rates (or baselevel lowering rates). The results demonstrate that estimates of m/n may be biased for basins with upward‐concave stream profiles because the local slope must be approximated with an average upstream slope. In addition, when uplift rate varies temporally, knickpoints are shown to travel through the basins with constant vertical velocity. Because incision rates vary within the basin, Playfair's law only holds exactly at the junctions. These effects are more important when slopes are measured over longer distances. Finally, measurement techniques are presented which address these potential biases. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Stream temperature ranged from 3 to 4°C at an experimental site during snowmelt on Hokkaido Island, Japan, which provided direct evidence of major contributions of subsurface water to stream water. In contrast, stream temperatures during rainstorms in summer decreased gradually after stream flow peaked, attaining a nearly constant temperature ranging from 9 to 11°C. During storm flow recession, stream temperatures during summer or snowmelt were similar to the soil temperature at 1·8 m below the land surface, suggesting that subsurface water contributions to stream flow are derived from this depth. The hygrographs during two rainstorms, August 1987 and September 1989, were separated using temperature. The stream temperature was assumed to depend on the mixing of surface flow, having a temperature ranging from that of rainfall to that of shallow (50 cm deep) soil water, and subsurface flow, having the temperature of the soil at 1·8 m below the land surface. Subsurface flow was estimated to contribute 85–90% of the total stream flow during each rainstorm. A two‐component hydrograph separation was also evaluated using specific conductance. Runoff contributions from the two sources for the temperature and specific conductance analysis were similar. Analysis of the temperature and conductance–discharge hysteresis loop, and of individual flow components for storm hygrographs, provide a general picture of the runoff process in the experimental basin. The problem of predicting future short-term chemical behaviour in acidic and acid-sensitive streams is addressed. A relatively simple method is presented which combines a chemical technique for splitting the hydrograph into ground water and soil water components, based on the conservative component acid neutralization capacity, with the long-term hydrochemical model (MAGIC) in a ‘two-box’ mode. This method, coupled with a chemical speciation program (ALCHEMI), is used to assess short-term variations in stream chemistry with change in atmospheric deposition chemistry. The method is applied for a semi-natural moorland catchment in mid-Wales (Afon Gwy). For both hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium, the modelled stream mixing relationships are non-linear, particularly at low hydrogen ion concentrations. The results also show that the relationship between hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium concentrations varies with time in the stream. This result has important implications as it implies that aluminium concentrations will not recover, with reduced anthropogenic sulphur deposition, as rapidly as has previously been thought. Two methods, for use with critical load evaluation of ecological stress, are presented for describing the changes occurring: the hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium concentration duration curve; the hydrogen ion and inorganic aluminium incident frequenty diagram.  相似文献

Streams can be classified as stable or unstable, depending on the stage of channel evolution. Many streams of the southern Piedmont in United States have high sediment loads and are listed as impaired under the total maximum daily load (TMDL) program and may be unstable. It is not clear as to what the target (reference) load or remediation measures should be for unstable streams. The objective of this study was to determine the relative channel stability for a typical southern Piedmont stream using rapid geomorphic assessments (RGAs) and sediment yield analysis. The results were supported through a sediment fingerprinting analysis. RGAs were performed along 52 reaches on the North Fork Broad River (NFBR) main stem and two tributaries. Annual sediment yields were calculated and compared with yields in the southern Piedmont for stable streams that are resilient to degradation or aggradation and unstable streams that are susceptible to such disturbances. Majority of the NFBR main stem was found to be unstable with signs of geomorphic instability in the form of degradation and aggradation. The estimated average annual sediment yield was 0·78 T ha?1 year?1. By comparison, the median annual yield is 0·20 T ha?1 year?1 for stable streams and 0·48 T ha?1 year?1 for unstable streams in the Piedmont ecoregion with comparable drainage basin size. We conclude that the NFBR is in an unstable stage of channel evolution. Sediment fingerprinting proved that majority of the stream‐suspended sediment emanated from eroding stream channels. The methods outlined in this study have implications for the reference condition and remediation efforts related to stream turbidity and stream channel restoration. Stream chemistry is often used to infer catchment‐scale biogeochemical processes. However, biogeochemical cycling in the near‐stream zone or hydrologically connected areas may exert a stronger influence on stream chemistry compared with cycling processes occurring in more distal parts of the catchment, particularly in dry seasons and in dry years. In this study, we tested the hypotheses that near‐stream wetland proportion is a better predictor of seasonal (winter, spring, summer, and fall) stream chemistry compared with whole‐catchment averages and that these relationships are stronger in dryer periods with lower hydrologic connectivity. We evaluated relationships between catchment wetland proportion and 16‐year average seasonal flow‐weighted concentrations of both biogeochemically active nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrate (NO3‐N), total phosphorus (TP), as well as weathering products, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), at ten headwater (<200 ha) forested catchments in south‐central Ontario, Canada. Wetland proportion across the entire catchment was the best predictor of DOC and TP in all seasons and years, whereas predictions of NO3‐N concentrations improved when only the proportion of wetland within the near‐stream zone was considered. This was particularly the case during dry years and dry seasons such as summer. In contrast, Ca and Mg showed no relationship with catchment wetland proportion at any scale or in any season. In forested headwater catchments, variable hydrologic connectivity of source areas to streams alters the role of the near‐stream zone environment, particularly during dry periods. The results also suggest that extent of riparian zone control may vary under changing patterns of hydrological connectivity. Predictions of biogeochemically active nutrients, particularly NO3‐N, can be improved by including near‐stream zone catchment morphology in landscape models.  相似文献

Quantifying bank storage of variably saturated aquifers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Li H  Boufadel MC  Weaver JW 《Ground water》2008,46(6):841-850
Numerical simulations were conducted to quantify bank storage in a variably saturated, homogenous, and anisotropic aquifer abutting a stream during rising stream stage. Seepage faces and bank slopes ranging from 1/3 to 100/3 were simulated. The initial conditions were assumed steady-state flow with water draining toward the stream. Then, the stream level rose at a constant rate to the specified elevation of the water table given by the landward boundary condition and stayed there until the system reached a new steady state. This represents a highly simplified version of a real world hydrograph. For the specific examples considered, the following conclusions can be made. The volume of surface water entering the bank increased with the rate of stream level rise, became negligible when the rate of rise was slow, and approached a positive constant when the rate was large. Also, the volume decreased with the dimensionless parameter M (the product of the anisotropy ratio and the square of the domain's aspect ratio). When M was large (>10), bank storage was small because most pore space was initially saturated with ground water due to the presence of a significant seepage face. When M was small, the seepage face became insignificant and capillarity began to play a role. The weaker the capillary effect, the easier for surface water to enter the bank. The effect of the capillary forces on the volume of surface water entering the bank was significant and could not be neglected.  相似文献

Abstract

A relationship of hydrologic variables with stream salinity was determined statistically for two ephemeral streams located in western Oklahoma. The hydrologic variables employed in this study are measures of streamflow, precipitation, anteccedent conditions, and agricultural land use.

The best single estimate of stream salinity was achieved by use of those variables classed as direct measures of precipitation, with the greatest variability in stream salinity (51%) being predicted by maximum daily P, the maximum amount of precipitation received at any rain gage zone in the watershed during one month. Maximum daily P predicts nearly double the variability in stream salinity predicted by flow. Antecedent conditions did not correlate well with stream salinity, except for the variable describing the antecedent stream salinity. Similarly, the areal location of precipitation within the watershed and agricultural land use did not correlate significantly with stream salinity, except for a variable designating the distance between the stream gaging station and the rain gage zone receiving the most precipitation for the month.

The best overall estimate of salinity was given by a multiple regression equation chosen on the basis of a factor analysis. This equation accounted for 65 percent of the variability in salinity and emphasized the contribution of variables classed as direct measures of precipitation. In comparing the two streams, the watershed having the most intensive rain gage network produced the best prediction equation.  相似文献

A study of the interaction between groundwater and surface water was undertaken within a small agricultural watershed in southern Ontario, Canada. Groundwater contributions to streamflow were measured along a section of stream during baseflow conditions and during rainfall events. Four techniques were used to estimate the contribution of groundwater to the stream along a 450 m reach (three during baseflow and one during stormflow conditions). Under baseflow conditions, streamflow measurements using the velocity–area technique indicated that the net groundwater flux to the stream during the summer months was 10 ml s−1 m−1. Hydrometric measurements (i.e. hydraulic gradient and hydraulic conductivity) taken using mini-piezometers installed in the sediments beneath the stream resulted in net groundwater flux estimates that were four to five times lower. Seepage meters failed to provide any measurements of water flux into or out of the stream. Therefore, based on these results, the velocity–area technique gives the best estimate of groundwater discharge. Hydrograph separations were conducted using isotopic ratios and electrical conductivity on two large rainfall events with different antecedent moisture conditions in the catchment. Both events showed that pre-event water (generally considered groundwater) dominated streamflow and tile drain flow with 64%–80% of the total discharge contributed by pre-event water. High water table conditions within the catchment resulted in greater stream discharge and a greater contribution of event water in the streamflow than that observed under low water table conditions for similar intensity storm events. The results also showed that differences in riparian zone width, vegetation and surface saturation conditions between the upper and lower catchment can influence the relative magnitude of streamflow response from the two catchment areas.  相似文献

Abstract

Throughflow has been measured from three soil horizons on a 12 slope with impermeable, bedrock. Storm flow comes from the 10–45 cm horizon and is controlled by the upslope extent of saturated conditions. Base flow comes from the 45–75 cm horizon and is supplied by slow unsaturated flow from the whole soil mass to a small constant zone of saturation.

Differences between input and output stream hydrographs over 270 metres of channel are attributed to throughflow and correlate well with measured values providing a basis for separating throughflow components from the stream hydrograph. Observed stream flows contain no overland flow or ground water flow components. The main basin flood peak is not generated within this control section of channel but is produced in the headwater zone (0.1 km2) by the faster runoff characteristics of the soils in that area and by topographic factors which lead to rapid channel extension.  相似文献
