The early stages of agriculture in the Boreal forests of Northern Europe remain poorly understood. Although pottery appeared during the 6th millennium B.C., this has not been seen as an indication of a true Neolithic in the north. In later prehistory, vast parts of the region are thought to have remained a wilderness. In order to test these assumptions, a high‐resolution pollen analysis and an archaeological survey were carried out at Lake Huhdasjärvi, SE Finland. The results indicate signs of cultivation already by the early Neolithic, 5260–4260 B.C., and slash‐and‐burn cultivation concentrated on deciduous forests is recorded from ca. A.D. 600 onwards. By A.D. 930, an intensive form of swidden cultivation began in the coniferous forests, indicating a well‐established agricultural settlement. The discovery of Neolithic (late 6th millennium B.C.) buckwheat pollen suggests that the roots of agriculture in northernmost Europe may have to be searched for in China rather than the Near East.  相似文献

A geochemical–paleolimnological study was conducted to investigate human influences on three lakes (Nuasjärvi, Jormasjärvi and Kolmisoppi) located in an area with high background levels of metals and sulphur in bedrock and till overburden. Accordingly, background concentrations of Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni and Zn were above average in sediments of the study lakes. The land use-related erosion and transport of particulate matter into Lake Nuasjärvi started as early as in the seventeenth century, while increased inputs to Lake Jormasjärvi date to the eighteenth century and Lake Kolmisoppi to the 1970s and 1980s. Local tills and fine-grained sediments are the source of the particles and hydraulic sorting has resulted in elevated sediment concentrations of Ca, Cr, Cu, K, Mg, Na and Ni. At the same time, sedimentation of carbon and autochthonous phases has decreased, leading to low concentrations of Co, Fe and Mn in the erosion-associated sediment layers in Nuasjärvi and Kolmisoppi. Despite the geochemical changes, no marked eutrophication of the lakes could be detected with diatom-based nutrient reconstructions during the early land-use period.Elevated amounts of sulphur and chalcophilic elements were deposited throughout the study area during the 1970s and 1980s. In Lake Nuasjärvi combination of the elements is associated with the Lahnaslampi mine and the difference in the sulphide degradation rate is reflected as a sequence of element mobility and sedimentation in the order 1) S, and 2) Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Sb. Sulphur, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn enrichment in the other two lakes is related to other land uses and to atmospheric deposition. In addition to sulphur and metals, these most recent inputs from the catchment have caused nutrient enrichment in all three study lakes, most notably in the lowest-lying Lake Nuasjärvi. This lake has the highest percentage of fine-grained soils in its catchment and also suffers from point source nutrient inputs. In addition, metals (Ni) had a signal in diatom assemblages in Lake Nuasjärvi that was statistically independent of eutrophication (N:C) but inseparable from mineral matter inputs (K).  相似文献

The deglaciation history of eastern Fennoscandia - recent data from Finland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recent stratigraphical, morphological, and radiocarbon data indicate that most of eastern Finland north of North Karelia was deglaciated in early Flandrian times between about 9500 and 9000 B.P. The Younger Dryas ice margin, represented by the Salpausselka ridges in southern Finland, continued through the North Karelian end-moraines across the eastern border of the country. In Soviet Karelia it is possibly represented by the so-called East Karelian end-moraines known from earlier studies.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial variations in the rate of sedimentation and sediment resuspension in Lake Rehtijärvi (southern Finland) were studied by sediment traps deployed in the stratifying and non‐stratifying regions of the lake. Both the gross sedimentation rate and the resuspension rate recorded by near‐bottom traps were significantly higher in the stratifying region (>20 m depth) than in the shallow part of the lake (2 m depth). These rate changes were caused by temporarily elevated hypolimnetic resuspension rates exceeding 40 g dry weight m?2 day?1 in July 2005, whereas in the shallow station no such peak was observed and the resuspension rate remained below 30 g dry weight m?2 day?1 throughout the study. The elevated resuspension rate in the hypolimnion could not be attributed to surface wave action or sediment disturbance by fish, but was due to the occurrence of internal seiches. The seiche amplitude was on average the highest in July, although the wind velocities were low; this was because winds temporarily were blowing along the longitudinal axis of the lake. Due to the steep slopes, the sediments of Lake Rehtijärvi are prone to redistribution and sediment focusing towards the accumulation areas also affected trap catches in the deep stations.  相似文献

Individual grains of zircon from the Archean Kostomuksha, North Karelian and Matkalakhta greenstone belts, which are situated respectively in western, northern and eastern Karelia, are studied using the ion microprobe SHRIMP II. As a result, the oldest 207Pb/206Pb ages of 3151 ± 4.6 and 3329 ± 16 Ma are first determined for detrital zircons from northern and eastern Karelia. The 207Pb/206Pb ages estimated for two subsequent metamorphic events of Archean Eon in eastern Karelia correspond to 3.25 and 3.17–3.10 Ga. The age value of 2711 ± 9.6 Ma is determined for silicic volcano-plutonic complex and quartz stockwork in northern Karelia and the date 2821 ± 15 Ma for magmatic rocks of eastern Karelia. Silicic volcanics from an oceanic plateau section in the Kostomuksha belt are dated at 2791.7 ± 6.1 Ma for the first time in the Archean of Fennoscandia. The oldest detrital zircons from siliciclastic metasediments determine the stabilization time of Archean continental nuclei in East Fennoscandia. The younger generation of greenstone belts is exemplified in the Karelian craton by the Matkalakhta and Kostomuksha structures comprising rock associations less than 2.82 Ga old, mafic rocks of the Kontokki Group included. Geological history of these belts corresponds to geodynamic mesocycle 90–110 Ma long and to the Archean global epoch of metallogeny, which was responsible for origin of most valuable deposits of base and precious metals.  相似文献

Hättestrand, M. & Robertsson, A.‐M. 2010: Weichselian interstadials at Riipiharju, northern Sweden – interpretation of vegetation and climate from fossil and modern pollen records. Boreas, 10.1111/j.1502‐3885.2009.00129.x. ISSN 0300‐9483. The most complete records of Weichselian ice‐free conditions in northern Sweden have been retrieved from kettleholes in the Riipiharju esker. In an earlier study, the Riipiharju I core was described as containing two Weichselian interstadials and Riipiharju was chosen as type site for the second Weichselian interstadial in northern Sweden. Here, we present a palynological investigation of two new sediment cores (Riipiharju II and III) retrieved from Riipiharju. Together, the new cores comprise a late cold part of the first Weichselian interstadial recorded in northeastern Sweden (Tärendö I, earlier correlated with Peräpohjola in Finland) as well as a long sequence of the second Weichselian interstadial (Tärendö II, earlier named Tärendö). The results indicate that the climate during deposition of the Tärendö II sequence was more variable than earlier suggested. According to the present interpretation it was relatively warm in the early part of Tärendö II; thereafter a long cold phase persisted, and finally the climate was warmer again in the late part of Tärendö II. The warm phases are characterized by Betula‐dominant pollen assemblages, while the cold phase is characterized by high percentages of Artemisia and Gramineae pollen. Since there is still no firm chronology established of the interstadials in northeastern Sweden, two possible correlations are discussed; either Tärendö I and II are correlated with Brörup (MIS 5c) and Odderade (MIS 5a), or, perhaps more likely, they are correlated with Odderade and early Middle Weichselian (MIS 3) time.  相似文献

The internal load of phosphorus can be treated with chemicals improving a sediment's phosphorus binding capacity. Gypsum (CaSO4?2H2O) is a novel material to be applied for this purpose. In the hypereutrophic Lake Enäjärvi, southern Finland, sediments were treated with gypsum in test basins. The basins were isolated from open water to create artificial anoxia, which allowed the effects of the treatment on the internal load to be measured. The results indicate that gypsum treatment decreases the sediment's release of nutrients under anoxic conditions. This was demonstrated as less increased total-P and total-N concentrations and decreased chlorophyll-a concentrations in the water column of treated basins as compared with the control basins. Because the gypsum treatment prevents internal load, it has potential in lake restoration in cases where the internal load of phosphorus is accelerated by anoxic conditions at the sediment/water interface.  相似文献

The minor-element composition of bottom sediments from the littoral zone of the northern part of Lake Ladoga was studied. Close relationships between the anomalous Cd concentrations in lake sediments and Quaternary glacial formations on the territory of Karelia were shown. A negative correlation of Cd with other heavy metals and a positive correlation with Zr were observed. Most likely, Cd is an impurity in zircons from sandy and sandy loam sedimentary formations on the northern coastal area of Lake Ladoga.  相似文献

The mode and nature of ice-flow mechanism leading to ice-lobe formation during deglaciation is described. These mechanisms are deduced primarily from their geomorphological and stratigraphical effects: the arc-like formations fringing the ice lobes, certain patterns of landform elements, and in some cases the stratigraphical signs indicating ice-marginal readvance or lack of it. Several ice-lobe creation mechanisms are presented along with the associated landform patterns they produce. The theory encompassing the fan-like ice flows, the ice-lobe formation, and the arc formations fringing them is applied to the deglaciation in Soviet Karelia and adjacent Finland. Deglaciation proceeded here from the southeast to the northwest, and complex arc formations derived from the major ice lobes. The Finnish Lake District lobe, the North Karelian lobe, the Kuusamo lobe, and the other lobes in northeastern Finland were in general metachronously formed.  相似文献

Rates of sedimentation in two Lake Superior deposits were determined by both ragweed pollen and 210Pb geochronologies. The former yields an average rate over the time since the first appearance of enhanced concentrations of the pollen as a consequence of human settlement. Sedimentation rates derived on these two bases can be brought into accord if the first appearance of ragweed pollen in the sediments was around 1830 and if the sedimentation rates have been uniform over the past century.  相似文献

This article presents the results of a geochemical investigation of sediments from Lake Druzno (northern Poland), a reservoir fed by freshwater from the catchment, with periodic input of brackish water from Vistula Lagoon. This study analyzed the spatial variation in heavy metal content in surface sediments as well as the temporal changes in metal content in two sediment cores dated using the 210Pb method. In the surface sediments, the highest metal concentrations were recorded in the northern part of the lake, with lower concentrations in the central and southern parts. Absolute values of metal concentrations in the cores were low, but normalization with respect to Al showed an increase during the second half of the 20th century. Mean enrichment factors (EF) in sediments from the second half of the 20th century ranged from insignificant (1–1.2) for Fe to (1.55–3.3) for Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn. The sediments deposited before 1950 had lower EF values (>1.5) and had low variability. Results from both the surface sediments and the cores indicate that the main source of lake pollution is brackish water intrusion from the Vistula Lagoon via the contaminated River Elbląg.  相似文献

Siliciclastic metasediments of the Ladoga Group that is the Kalevian stratotype in Karelia correlative with the Kalevian siliciclastic succession in Finland are studied in terms of geochemistry and Sm-Nd isotopic systematics. The results obtained show that rocks in the Ladoga Group lower part are enriched, as compared to rocks of the upper part, in TiO2, Fe2O3, MgO, Cr, Co, Ni, and Sc, being comparatively depleted in Al2O3 and Th that is a result of compositional changes in provenances. The Sm-Nd isotopic data evidence that siliciclastic sediments of the Ladoga Group have accumulated during the erosion of rocks, which originated at the time of the Archean and Early Proterozoic crust-forming processes. Siliciclastic material with the Archean and Early Proterozoic TNd(DM) values, which are characteristic of metasediments in the group lower part, was derived respectively from granite gneisses of the Archean basement in the Karelian megablock of the Baltic Shield and from volcanic rocks of the Sortavala Group. Volcanic rocks of island-arc terranes of the Svecofennian foldbelt represented main source of siliciclastic material that accumulated in upper part of the succession.  相似文献

The distribution of 210Pb, 137Cs, and Ambrosia (ragweed) pollen in two sediment cores from Lake Ontario and in three cores from Lake Erie provides independent estimates of sediment accumulation rates. Geochronology with 210Pb is based on radioactive decay of the isotope following burial in sediments. The method can reveal with precision changes in sedimentation occurring over the past 100 yr or so. Geochronologies with 137Cs and Ambrosia are based on the occurrence of a horizon corresponding, respectively, to the onset of nuclear testing 25 yr ago and to regional forest clearance in the middle 1800s. These methods provide estimates of long-term average sediment accumulation rates. In all but one core, the distributions of 137Cs and 210Pb indicate no physical mixing of near-surface sediments. In two cores, including one from central Lake Erie collected by diver, all three estimates of sedimentation rates are in excellent agreement. In two other cores, rates based on 210Pb are significantly higher than those inferred from Ambrosia pollen profiles. Lower average rates appear to result from occasional massive losses of sediments. Such events, apparent in the distribution of 210Pb but not in pollen records, correlate with the occurrence of major storm surges on the lakes during this century. In one core from western Lake Erie, exponential distributions of both 210Pb and Ambrosia appear to be artifacts which may result from extensive biological or physical reworking of sediments in shallow water (11 m). Previous indications of increased sedimentation in Lake Erie since about 1935 based on Castanea (chestnut) pollen data are not substantiated.  相似文献

Two sediment cores from Kaiyak and Squirrel lakes in northwestern Alaska yielded pollen records that date to ca. 39,000 and 27,000 yr B.P., respectively. Between 39,000 and 14,000 yr B.P., the vegetation around these lakes was dominated by Gramineae and Cyperaceae with some Salix and possibly Betula nana/glandulosa forming a local, shrub component of the vegetation. Betula pollen percentages increased about 14,000 yr B.P., indicating the presence of a birchdominated shrub tundra. Alnus pollen appeared at both sites between 9000 and 8000yr B.P., and Picea pollen (mostly P. mariana) arrived at Squirrel Lake about 5000 yr B.P. The current foresttundra mosaic around Squirrel Lake was established at this time, whereas shrub tundra existed near Kaiyak Lake throughout the Holocene. When compared to other pollen records from north-western North America, these cores (1) represent a meadow component of lowland. Beringian tundra between 39,000 and 14,000 yr B.P., (2) demonstrate an early Holocene arrival of Alnus in northwestern Alaska that predates most other Alnus horizons in northern Alaska or northwestern Canada, and (3) show an east-to-west migration of Picea across northern Alaska from 9000 to 5000 yr B.P.  相似文献

Moraines studied in the Chon-Kyzylsuu River valley (southeastern Lake Issyk-Kul region, Tien Shan) were mobilized during historic and prehistoric large earthquakes. Seismic triggers of moraine mobilization included the M > 8 Kebin earthquake of 1911 and prehistoric events that produced rockslides, landslides, and multiple fault scarps. Rockslides in the Chon-Kyzylsuu basin are located in the hanging wall of the Terskey border thrust fault. The observed deformation results from at least four prehistoric earthquakes in the second half of the Holocene (early 20th century BC, early 11th century BC, middle 8th century BC, and early 2nd century BC), with local shaking intensity I > 7.  相似文献

In late Pleistocene time Lake Dieri (ancestral ‘Greater Lake Eyre') was permanently filled during a wet climatic phase. Towards the close of Pleistocene time the watertable fell, Lake Dieri dried up, and its sediments deflated. Later the watertable rose, establishing ephemeral Lake Eyre in the deflated area, and Holocene sedimentation commenced. At about this time Lake Eyre tilted to the south and three sedimentary environments developed: (1) a saline playa environment without saltcrusts in the northern end of the lake, where water drains away before wholly evaporating; (2) a terminal salina environment in the south end, where evaporation of brines leaves saltcrusts overlying gypseous sediments; and (3) a saline flocculation environment between the playa and salina environments, where sediments are deposited by flocculation when muddy floodwater from the north meets highly saline water of the southern salina.

In the northern playa environment, sedimentation is limited to the top of the capillary fringe above the watertable, below which sediments remain moist and protected from aeolian erosion, but above which they dry and blow out of the lake. In the southern salina environment sedimentation has not kept pace with the Holocene rise in watertable. If and when it does reach such a level, downward leaching of salt and deflation of exposed sediments is likely to occur. In the flocculation environment new deposits of clay are added but kept permanently wet by rising groundwater. When flocculated sediment builds too high, its excess is transferrred by surface water into the salina deposits to the south.  相似文献

This paper contains lithostratigraphic and chronometric (radiocarbon dating) data on one of the regions on the Karelian coast of the White Sea obtained in the course of investigation of sedimentary sections from recent lake basins, which were separated at different times from the sea due to uplift of the glacioisostatic crust of the Earth. They were used as a basis for stratigraphic subdivision of marine and fresh water sediments and for reconstruction of the White Sea coast level change during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene near the Settlement of Kuzema, Karelia.  相似文献

A peat layer beneath two till beds was found at Seitevare in Swedish Lapland. The pollen flora layer indicates deposition during the later part of the Eemian Interglacial. The vegetation consisted of open forests predominated by pine and birch, mixed with alder and spruce. The sedimentation took place in a small oligotrophic-dystrophic water basin with a pH about 5, according to the diatom flora. In an adjacent section, silty sediments with pollen indicating interstadial vegetation (birches, herbs) are covered by one till bed. These sediments are tentatively correlated with the Peräpohjola Interstadial in northern Finland and north-eastern Sweden. The lithostratigraphy indicates one pre-Eemian and probably three Weichselian glacial advances.  相似文献

The paper reviews the work on paleolimnology in parts of the FSU over the last 40 years. It presents a short review of The History of the Lakes of the East European Plain, one of the books of the series The History of Lakes published by the Institute of Lake Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It describes the Late Pleistocene and Holocene history of these lakes based mainly on the study of lacustrine sediments. Amongst the samples Lake Nero near Moscow which is located near the marginal zone of the last glaciation, and includes records that go back as early as 190,000 BP. The main elements of lake evolution are shown in different territories: Byelorussia; Baltic countries; Karelia; and the Kola Peninsula. Special attention is given to palaeolimnological data because its use for Holocene and Late Pleistocene palaeoclimate reconstructions.  相似文献

The development of a glacial lake impounded along the retreating, northeastern ice margin of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet during the last deglaciation and environmental conditions directly following the early Holocene deglaciation have been studied in NE Finland. This so‐called Sokli Ice Lake has been reconstructed previously using topographic and geomorphologic evidence. In this paper a multiproxy approach is employed to study a 3‐m‐thick sediment succession consisting of laminated silts grading into gyttja cored in Lake Loitsana, a remnant of the Sokli Ice Lake. Variations in the sediment and siliceous microfossil records indicate distinct changes in water depth and lake size in the Loitsana basin as the Sokli Ice Lake was drained through various spillways opening up along the retreating ice front. Geochemical data (XRF core‐scanning) show changes in the influence of regional catchment geochemistry (Precambrian crystalline rocks) in the glacial lake drainage area versus local catchment geochemistry (Sokli Carbonatite Massif) within the Lake Loitsana drainage area during the lake evolution. Principal component analysis on the geochemical data further suggests that grain‐size is an additional factor responsible for the variability of the sediment geochemistry record. The trophic state of the lake changed drastically as a result of morphometric eutrophication once the glacial lake developed into Lake Loitsana. The AMS radiocarbon dating on tree birch seeds found in the glaciolacustrine sediment indicates that Lake Loitsana was deglaciated sometime prior to 10 700 cal. a BP showing that tree Betula was present on the deglaciated land surrounding the glacial lake. Although glacial lakes covered large areas of northern Finland during the last deglaciation, only few glaciolacustrine sediment successions have been studied in any detail. Our study shows the potential of these sediments for multiproxy analysis and contributes to the reconstruction of environmental conditions in NE Finland directly following deglaciation in the early Holocene.  相似文献
