The AMANDA neutrino telescope has recently reported the detection of high-energy neutrinos spatially and temporally coincident with the flaring of the TeV blazar 1ES 1959 + 650. If high-energy neutrinos are in fact generated by this blazar, it would be the first strong evidence for the hadronic acceleration of cosmic rays. At present, the statistical significance of this observation cannot be reliably assessed, however. In this letter, we investigate whether circumstances exist where the source can produce the flux implied by the coincident events. We show that if the TeV gamma-ray emission observed from 1ES 1959 + 650 or other nearby TeV blazars is the result of accelerated protons interacting with nucleons, it is reasonable that AMANDA could detect several events during a flaring period. Such rates require that the spectral index of the source be rather high (for instance ∼2.8 for 1ES 1959 + 650) and that the Lorentz factor of the jet be fairly small (Γ  1).

TeV γ-ray detections in flaring states without activity in X-rays from blazars have attracted much attention due to the irregularity of these “orphan” flares. Although the synchrotron self-Compton model has been very successful in explaining the spectral energy distribution and spectral variability of these sources, it has not been able to describe these atypical flaring events. On the other hand, an electron–positron pair plasma at the base of the AGN jet was proposed as the mechanism of bulk acceleration of relativistic outflows. This plasma in quasi-thermal equilibrium called Wein fireball emits radiation at MeV-peak energies serving as target of accelerated protons. In this work we describe the “orphan” TeV flares presented in blazars 1ES 1959+650 and Mrk 421 assuming geometrical considerations in the jet and evoking the interactions of Fermi-accelerated protons and MeV-peak target photons coming from the Wein fireball. After describing successfully these “orphan” TeV flares, we correlate the TeV γ-ray, neutrino and UHECR fluxes through interactions and calculate the number of high-energy neutrinos and UHECRs expected in IceCube/AMANDA and TA experiment, respectively. In addition, thermal MeV neutrinos produced mainly through electron–positron annihilation at the Wein fireball will be able to propagate through it. By considering two- (solar, atmospheric and accelerator parameters) and three-neutrino mixing, we study the resonant oscillations and estimate the neutrino flavor ratios as well as the number of thermal neutrinos expected on Earth.

Long TeV γ-ray campaigns have been carried out to study the spectrum, variability and duty cycle of the BL Lac object Markarian 421. These campaigns have given some evidence of the presence of protons in the jet: (i) Its spectral energy distribution which shows two main peaks; one at low energies (∼1 keV) and the other at high energies (hundreds of GeV), has been described by using synchrotron proton blazar model. (ii) The study of the variability at GeV γ-rays and X-rays has indicated no significant correlation. (iii) TeV γ-ray detections without activity in X-rays, called “orphan flares” have been observed in this object.Recently, The Telescope Array Collaboration reported the arrival of 72 ultra-high-energy cosmic rays with some of them possibly related to the direction of Markarian 421. The IceCube Collaboration reported the detection of 37 extraterrestrial neutrinos in the TeV–PeV energy range collected during three consecutive years. In particular, no neutrino track events were associated with this source. In this paper, we consider the proton–photon interactions to correlate the TeV γ-ray fluxes reported by long campaigns with the neutrino and ultra-high-energy cosmic ray observations around this blazar. Considering the results reported by The IceCube and Telescope Array Collaborations, we found that only from ∼25% to 70% of TeV fluxes described with a power law function with exponential cutoff can come from the proton–photon interactions.

This paper presents the results of the optical R band and 1.5–12 keV band X-ray monitoring of the high-energy peaked BL Lacertae source 1ES 1959+650 performed during 2002–2007 with the 70 cm Meniscus Telescope of Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory (Georgia) and the All-Sky Monitor on board the Rossi X-ray Time Explorer, respectively. The observed long- and short-term outbursts are fitted with the lightcurves obtained by means of the modeling of synchrotron flares that are assumed to be the result of a propagation of the relativistic shock waves through the jet of 1ES 1959+650, pointed to the observer. Different values of the input parameters (shock velocity, particles’ spectral index, sizes of emission region, minimum and maximum Lorentz factors of the particles etc.) are used in order to fit the simulated lightcurves whose constructed by means of observational data. This investigation shows that both shock velocity and physical conditions in the jet of 1ES 1959+650 should be variable from flare to flare. The shocks are found to be mildly relativistic with the apparent speeds β=0.46–0.85, expressed in the units of c. Spectral index of the particle energy distribution varied from 2.10 to 2.17 for the long-term flares while it is higher in the case of short-term outbursts: s=2.32–2.45 that is suggested to be a result of the deceleration of shock front during its passage through the shell situated downstream the Mach disc. The average strength of a turbulent magnetic field ranged from 0.025 gauss to 0.04 gauss for different long-term flares while the values of 0.07–0.14 gauss were adopted for the different short-term outbursts. The lengths of variable jet area found to be of 0.13–0.47 pc with the transverse extents of (0.5–1.0)×1017 cm in the case of long-term flares. The same characteristics for short-term outbursts were (2.74–5.5)×1016 cm and (0.2–04)×1017 cm, respectively. We conclude that both shock velocity and properties of pre-shocked plasma were not the same in 1ES 1959+650 for the different flaring epochs.

We present the results of six BeppoSAX observations of 1ES 2344+514, five of which were taken within one week. 1ES 2344+514, one of the few known TeV BL Lac objects, was detected by the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments (NFI) in the range 0.1 and ≈50 keV. During the first five closely spaced observations 1ES 2344+514 showed large-amplitude luminosity variability, associated with spectacular spectral changes: in particular, the last observation found the source to be several times fainter, with a much steeper X-ray spectrum . The energy-dependent shape of the light curve and the spectral changes both imply a large frequency shift (by a factor of 30 or more) of the peak of synchrotron emission. At maximum flux the peak was located at, or above, 10 keV, making 1ES 2344+514 the second blazar (after Mrk 501) to have a synchrotron peak in the hard X-ray band. The frequency shift, and the corresponding increase in luminosity, might be caused by the onset of a second synchrotron component extending from the soft to the hard X-ray band where most of the power is emitted. Rapid variability on a time-scale of approximately 5000 s has also been detected when the source was brightest.

The ANTARES telescope has the capability to detect neutrinos produced in astrophysical transient sources. Potential sources include gamma-ray bursts, core collapse supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. To enhance the sensitivity of ANTARES to such sources, a new detection method based on coincident observations of neutrinos and optical signals has been developed. A fast online muon track reconstruction is used to trigger a network of small automatic optical telescopes. Such alerts are generated for special events, such as two or more neutrinos, coincident in time and direction, or single neutrinos of very high energy.

This paper presents the results of optical CCD photometry in the Cousins R band for seven X-ray-selected BL Lacertae objects. Observations have been performed with the 70-cm meniscus telescope of Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory, Georgia. The data obtained provide important information on sources that have been rarely observed in the optical band. The targets show clear long-term variability with time-scales of 1.5–5 yr. The maximum amplitudes are slightly greater than 1 mag. 1ES 0323+022, 0502+675 and 0806+524 show clear non-periodical behaviour. 1ES 1028+511 changes quasi-periodically but further monitoring for periodicity confirmation and period derivation is needed. Overall brightness variation is maximal for 1ES 0647+250 with  Δ R = 1.29  mag. Two-peak maxima, indicating the existence of reverse shocks in blazar jets, are observed for 1ES 0502+675, 0647+250, 0806+524 and 1517+656. The targets do not show intra-night variability. Day-to-day changes with amplitudes of 0.1–0.32 mag coincide mainly with short-term bursts. The latter are seen at faint (quiet) stages as during flaring activities. This fact leads to the suggestion that both hot-spot and shock-in-jet models explaining the origin of short-term bursts should be reasonable.

We consider the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of the blazar 1ES 2344+514 in 2003 in comparison with the data of its ASM/RXTE X-ray monitoring. A VHE gamma-ray flux was detected from the observed object at a confidence level of ≈ 5σ and it was estimated to be 1.85 ± 0.68 Crab (E ≥ 1 TeV). The observations revealed a VHE gamma-ray burst from the object that occurred in September 2003 and that lasted for no more than 4 days. The burst was also confirmed in the X-ray (2–12 keV) energy range. Analysis of the observational data showed evidence of a correlation between the fluxes in the two energy ranges and invoking the previous observations of 1ES 2344+514 in 2002 allowed this correlation to be refined in a wide range of fluxes.

We present the results of the monitoring of a sample of 5 HBLs in the B, V and R bands during 2003–2008. All sources in our monitoring project show significant rapid optical variations, except 1ES 1959+650, however; for 1ES 1959+650, the gamma-ray variability on a timescale of ~7 hours has been observed by Holder et al. (Astrophys. J. 583:L9, 2003). Using these variability timescales, we estimate the black hole masses for each source with the Kerr black hole theory.

We calculate the spectral energy distribution (SED) of electromagnetic radiation and the spectrum of high-energy neutrinos from BL Lac objects in the context of the synchrotron proton blazar model. In this model, the high-energy hump of the SED is due to accelerated protons, while most of the low-energy hump is due to synchrotron radiation by co-accelerated electrons. To accelerate protons to sufficiently high energies to produce the high-energy hump, rather high magnetic fields are required. Assuming reasonable emission region volumes and Doppler factors, we then find that in low-frequency peaked BL Lacs (LBLs), which have higher luminosities than high-frequency peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), there is a significant contribution to the high-frequency hump of the SED from pion photoproduction and subsequent cascading, including synchrotron radiation by muons. In contrast, in HBLs we find that the high-frequency hump of the SED is dominated by proton synchrotron radiation. We are able to model the SED of typical LBLs and HBLs, and to model the famous 1997 flare of Markarian 501. We also calculate the expected neutrino output of typical BL Lac objects, and estimate the diffuse neutrino intensity due to all BL Lacs. Because pion photoproduction is inefficient in HBLs, as protons lose energy predominantly by synchrotron radiation, the contribution of LBLs dominates the diffuse neutrino intensity. We suggest that nearby LBLs may well be observable with future high-sensitivity TeV γ-ray telescopes.

A recent analysis of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data provided evidence for a high-intensity emission of high-energy gamma rays with a E−2 spectrum from two large areas, spanning 50° above and below the Galactic centre (the “Fermi bubbles”). A hadronic mechanism was proposed for this gamma-ray emission making the Fermi bubbles promising source candidates of high-energy neutrino emission. In this work Monte Carlo simulations regarding the detectability of high-energy neutrinos from the Fermi bubbles with the future multi-km3 neutrino telescope KM3NeT in the Mediterranean Sea are presented. Under the hypothesis that the gamma-ray emission is completely due to hadronic processes, the results indicate that neutrinos from the bubbles could be discovered in about one year of operation, for a neutrino spectrum with a cutoff at 100 TeV and a detector with about 6 km3 of instrumented volume. The effect of a possible lower cutoff is also considered.

We study the emission from an old supernova remnant (SNR) with an age of around 105 yr and that from a giant molecular cloud (GMC) encountered by the SNR. When the SNR age is around 105 yr, proton acceleration is efficient enough to emit TeV γ-rays both at the shock of the SNR and that in the GMC. The maximum energy of primarily accelerated electrons is so small that TeV γ-rays and X-rays are dominated by hadronic processes,  π0  -decay and synchrotron radiation from secondary electrons, respectively. However, if the SNR is older than several 105 yr, there are few high-energy particles emitting TeV γ-rays because of the energy-loss effect and/or the wave-damping effect occurring at low-velocity isothermal shocks. For old SNRs or SNR–GMC interacting systems capable of generating TeV γ-ray emitting particles, we calculated the ratio of TeV γ-ray (1–10 TeV) to X-ray (2–10 keV) energy flux and found that it can be more than  ∼102  . Such a source showing large flux ratio may be a possible origin of recently discovered unidentified TeV sources.

Most of the extragalactic sources from which very-high-energy (VHE, E > 1011 eV) gamma-ray fluxes have been detected belong to the category of high-energy peaked BL Lacertae objects (HBLs)—the sources in which the synchrotron radiation peaks in the UV or X-ray band. They often have higher X-ray luminosities than the VHE gamma-ray energy output, which makes them the most valuable objects for studying the characteristic spectral and temporal variations in the region of the synchrotron peak of the spectral energy distribution. The blazar 1ES 1426+428 belonging to this category is a target of many multiwavelength studies, both orbital and ground-based ones. The properties of its X-ray emission have also been investigated using RXTE/PCA, XMM-Newton, and SWIFT observations. Archival PCA/RXTE data with a total exposure time in 2002 and 2004 of ≈120h and the most recent available background and calibration files have been used. The extracted light curves of 1ES 1426+428 in the 2.9–24 keV energy band have shown an intense flaring activity on various time scales. Analysis of the observational data has also confirmed the spectral hardening with increasing X-ray intensity typical of blazars. The flaring state of the object is also characterized by a flat spectrum, which steepens with decreasing flux. The previously detected evidence of a spectral hysteresis in a separate flare has also been confirmed. Observations of 1ES 1426+428 with the SWIFT/XRT telescope and the EPIC instrument onboard XMM-Newton have revealed several intermediate-intensity flares in the 1.5–12 keV energy band with flux variations reaching a factor of 2, while analysis of the light curves has revealed a correlation between two components of the X-ray emission from the object.

In 1998–2011 the blazar (active galactic nucleus) BL Lacertae was observed at Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (CrAO) with the second-generation GT-48 Cherenkov telescope at energies >1 TeV with a total significance of 11.8σ. More than 20 flares and a fourfold change in yearly mean fluxes (>1 TeV) were recorded. The optical (B band) data obtained at CrAO and the TeV data are shown to correlate in some time intervals. The optical data are also compared with the X-ray RXTE/ASM (2–10 keV) data. In addition, the data from GT-48 are compared with the gamma-ray fluxes recorded by the Fermi LAT space telescope (0.1–300 GeV). The 2009 flare at TeV and Fermi energies has been studied. As a result, it has been found that as the activity rises the increase in flux at high energies exceeds its increase at low energies. This conclusion may be related to the conversion mechanism of particle acceleration. This is consistent with the results of studies for a similar object, 1ES 1426+428.

In this paper, we present high-energy neutrino spectra from 21 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), derived from gamma-ray measurements in the GeV–TeV range. We find that only the strongest sources, i.e. G40.5-0.5 in the north and Vela Junior in the south could be detected as single point sources by IceCube or KM3NeT, respectively. For the first time, it is also possible to derive a diffuse signal by applying the observed correlation between gamma-ray emission and radio signal. Radio data from 234 supernova remnants listed in Green’s catalog are used to show that the total diffuse neutrino flux is approximately a factor of 2.5 higher compared to the sources that are resolved so far. We show that the signal at above 10 TeV energies can actually become comparable to the diffuse neutrino flux component from interactions in the interstellar medium. Recently, the IceCube collaboration announced the detection of a first diffuse signal of astrophysical high-energy neutrinos. Directional information cannot unambiguously reveal the nature of the sources at this point due to low statistics. A number of events come from close to the Galactic center and one of the main questions is whether at least a part of the signal can be of Galactic nature. In this paper, we show that the diffuse flux from well-resolved SNRs is at least a factor of 20 below the observed flux.

Neutrino telescopes are moving steadily toward the goal of detecting astrophysical neutrinos from the most powerful galactic and extragalactic sources. Here we describe analysis methods to search for high energy point-like neutrino sources using detectors deep in the ice or sea. We simulate an ideal cubic kilometer detector based on real world performance of existing detectors such as AMANDA, IceCube, and ANTARES. An unbinned likelihood ratio method is applied, making use of the point spread function and energy distribution of simulated neutrino signal events to separate them from the background of atmospheric neutrinos produced by cosmic ray showers. The unbinned point source analyses are shown to perform better than binned searches and, depending on the source spectral index, the use of energy information is shown to improve discovery potential by almost a factor of two.

We describe a new fractal and wavelet based framework for analysing atmospheric Cerenkov images of extensive air showers. The methodology developed using simulated data has been tested with the data collected from Mrk421 and Crab nebula directions during 10 October 2009–16 May 2010 by the TACTIC telescope. The telescope detected flaring activity in TeV gamma-rays from Mrk421 during 15th-17th February 2010. Hillas parameter analysis of Cerenkov images showed presence of TeV γ-ray signal with statistical significance of 12.5 σ beyond 1TeV energy for the 265 hours data set. Based on a Monte-Carlo simulated database of Cerenkov images recorded by the TACTIC telescope, the wavelet dimension B6 can be exploited as a useful parameter to segregate gamma-ray initiated events from hadron initiated events with better efficiency. We derive a preliminary value of the relevant significance for gamma initiated events using wavelet parameter B6 for the 265 hours long observation spell of Mrk421 including the flaring episode during 15th–17th February 2010 and 66 hours data of observations on Crab nebula. Wavelet analysis approach has also been tested on Crab OFF- source data of 27 hours. Application of wavelet parameter B6 on the recorded Cerenkov images of the TACTIC telescope reveals better results in terms of segregation efficiency and enhancement of the determined value of statistical significance as compared to the Hillas parameters approach.
