Planimetry studies of coastal geology maps prepared by the Maine Geological Survey show that there is more than an order of magnitude more tidal marsh area in the state of Maine than documented in previously published estimates. The highly convoluted coast of Maine, which is approximately 5,970 km long, contains almost 79 km2 of salt marsh, far more than any other New England state, New York, or the Bay of Fundy region. Reasonable estimates for the per-unit primary productivity of salt marshes lead to projections of total marsh productivity on the order of 1010 g dry weight yr?1 for the Maine coast and 1011 g dry weight yr?1 for the Gulf of Maine as a whole. Distribution of tidal marsh area is strongly controlled by coastal geomorphology, which varies considerably along the coast of Maine. The salt marsh area is concentrated in the southwestern coastal region of arcuate bays, where marshes have developed behind sandy beaches. A series of long islands and bedrock peninsulas in the south-central portion of the coast also provides sheltered areas where large marshes occur. Northeast of Penobscot Bay salt marshes become more numerous and smaller in average areal extent. A lack of protection from waves, along with limited sources of glacio-fluvial and glacio-marine sediments, restricts the occurrence of salt marshes in that region to the frignes of coves and tidal rivers.  相似文献

Canary rockfish are one of the commercially important rockfish species along the US Pacific coast. Yet little is known about their life history and stock structure. In this study 120 canary rockfish otoliths were collected from waters off the Washington and Oregon coast and subjected to stable O and C isotope (δ18O and δ13C) analyses. One powder sample was taken from the nucleus of each otolith, and the other from the 5th annual ring. Data from otolith nuclei can provide information on the natal sources and spawning stock separations, while data from age-1 to age-5 may indicate changes in fish habitat. Overall the δ18O values in otoliths of canary rockfish ranged from −0.2 to +1.7‰, whereas δ13C values of the same samples ranged from −5.4 to −1.4‰. The isotopic data and correlation of δ18O versus δ13C did not show clear separation between Washington and Oregon samples, similar to those for a previous study on yelloweye rockfish from the same region. These results suggest that canary rockfish may belong to a single spawning stock or population along the Washington and Oregon coast.  相似文献

皖南许村镇附近发育一套岩墙群,主要由辉长岩和花岗闪长斑岩组成,它们在时空上紧密伴生,成因上密切相关。岩石的SiO2含量集中分布在酸性和基性成分之间,缺乏中性及中酸性成分,构成一套双峰式侵入岩组合。对花岗闪长斑岩进行锆石LA-ICP-MS U-Pb年代学研究,表明双峰式岩墙侵入时间为822.1±6.6Ma。辉长岩具有正εHf (t)值(2.1~4.4)、大离子亲石元素和LREE富集,显示大陆拉斑质玄武岩地球化学和同位素组成特征;花岗闪长斑岩富含Zr、Hf和稀土元素,较高的Ga/A1比值,较低Ba、Sr、P、Ti含量,总体上地球化学特征类似A2-型花岗岩,εHf (t )值范围(1.8~4.6)与辉长岩基本相同。许村双峰式岩墙群的基性端员辉长岩是拉张环境下华南弱亏损岩石圈地幔部分熔融产生玄武质岩浆的产物,而酸性端员花岗闪长斑岩是玄武质岩浆在上升途中受地壳混染,并发生底侵作用和由玄武岩浆提供的热源导致地壳重熔的结果。  相似文献

Generalized development of calc-silicate bands in several alpujarride units of the central and western segments of the Betic Zone, is interpreted as the result of metamorphic differentiation from original calcium-rich sedimentary beds in the sequence. Presence of Scapolite suggests that this phenomenon may have been made possible by the catalizing action of high anion concentrations in the pore fluid medium during metamorphism, probably caused by the existence of evaporic material in the original sediments. This hypothesis, which is further supported by anomalous high Ca, Na and K contents of the enclosing metapelites, leads to the correlation of the present calc-silicate bearing metamorphic formations with well-known permo-werfenian evaporitic series in other units of the Betic Zone. The use of this new criterion of stratigraphic correlation would indicate that highly metamorphosed permo-triassic sequences have often been misidentified as more ancient formations, thus causing an underestimation of the importance of alpine HT-LP metamorphism in the alpujarride tectonic domain.
Zusammenfassung Das häufige Auftreten von Kalksilikatbändern (manchmal mit Skapolith) in einigen alpujarriden Einheiten, besonders im zentralen und westlichen Abschnitt der betischen Kordillere, wird erklärt als Ergebnis einer metamorphen Differentiation von ursprünglich Ca-reichen Schichten. Die Anwesenheit von Skapolith legt eine hohe Anionenkonzentration der intergranularen fluiden Phasen während der Metamorphose nahe, bedingt durch evaporitisches Material der ursprünglichen Sedimente. Diese Hypothese, zusätzlich gestützt durch den extrem hohen Gehalt der umgebenden Pelite an löslichen Kathionen (Ca, Na, K), erlaubt die Korrelation der Kalksilikatbänder-haltigen Formationen mit aus anderen betischen Einheiten bekannten evaporitischen Serien des Permowerfenïan. Auf die stratigraphische Korrelation angewendet, legt dies nahe, daß öfters hochmetamorphe, permotriadische Serien fälschlicherweise als älter betrachtet wurden, was zu einer Unterschätzung der alpinen Metamorphose (Niederdruck-Hochtemperatur) im alpujarridem Bereich führte.

Resumen El desarrollo bastante generalizado de bandas de silicatos calcicos, entre los cuales se encuentra a veces una escapolita, en varias unidades alpujárrides de los segmentos central y occidental de la Zona Bética, es interpretado como el resultado de un proceso de diferenciación metamórfica a partir de lechos sedimentarios originalmente ricos en calcio. La presencia de escapolita sugiere que este hecho ha sido probablemente posible gracias a la existencia de una alta concentración de aniones en el fluido metamórfico intergranular, condicionada por la existencia de material evaporitico en los sedimentos originales. Esta última hipótesis que es ulteriormente apoyada por un contenido anómalamente alto de cationes solubles (Ca, Na, K) en las metapelitas encajantes, permite correlacionar las formaciones que contienen los lechos de silicatos calcicos con conocidas series evaporiticas de edad permowerfenense en otras unidades de la Zona Bética. La aplicación de este nuevo criterio de correlación estratigráfica sugiere que series permotriásicas altamente metamorfizadas han sido a menudo erróneamente interpretadas como más antiguas, hecho que ha conllevado a una substimación de la importancia del metamorfismo (BP-AT) alpino en el dominio tectónico alpujárride.

Résumé Le developpement très fréquent de roches litées à silicates calciques dans quelques unités alpujarrides des regions centrale et occidentale de la Zone Bétique, est interpreté comme la conséquence d'un processus de différenciation métamorphique à partir de lits riches en calcium dans les sequences sédimentaires originelles. La présence de scapolite suggére que ce phénomène a été rendu possible par l'intervention d'un cataliseur naturel, tel que des hautes concentrations en anions dans le milieu fluide intergranulaire pendant le métamorphisme, occasionées probablement par l'existence de materiel évaporitique dans les sédiments originels.Cette hypothese, qui se trouve additionellement supportée par des teneurs élevées en cations solubles des métapelites encaissantes, permet d'assimiler les formations qui contiennent les lits à silicates calciques avec des séries évaporitiques permowerféniennes, bien connues dans d'autres unités des zones internes des Cordilléres Bétiques. L'application de ce nouveau critère de corrélation stratigraphique indiquerait que des séquences permotriasiques fortement affectées par le métamorphisme ont été souvent à tort interprétées comme plus anciennes, amenant ainsi a une sous-estimation de l'importance du métamorphisme alpin (BP-HT) dans le domaine tectonique alpujarride.

As the age of the soils in a chronosequence on the California coast increases, the difference between the magnetic susceptibility of eluvial and illuvial horizons increases, and the residual susceptibility after extraction with citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (CBD) decreases. Enhanced susceptibility results from the conversion of nonferrimagnetic minerals to secondary ferrimagnetic forms (most likely maghemite) and the preferential accumulation of inherited and pedogenic magnetic minerals. Little enhancement occurs for pedons younger than 40,000 yr. By 124,000 yr, most of the magnetic susceptibility can be attributed to forms soluble in CBD. Magnetic susceptibility appears to vary systematically over time for three chronosequences from areas with mean annual precipitation ranging from 650 to 1500 mm yr−1. Magnetic susceptibility enhancement may be a useful parameter for estimating soil age in certain climates.  相似文献

Lake Peipsi has a surface area of 3,555 km2 and is the fourth largest inland body of water in Europe and one of the best-stocked for fish. Its complex geological history was controlled by the retreat of the Late Pleistocene ice, and more recently by climatic fluctuations and neotectonic movements. The northern part of the N-S elongated basin is now rising, the central part is stable, and the southern part is sinking, but in the past, the differences in elevations were much greater. These processes are still causing the water to spread from north to south, where flooding of large areas poses many social problems. Because of the considerable water-level fluctuations, exceeding 3 m, both the surface area and the volume of the lake vary greatly. High water levels cause marked shoreline damage and pose a serious threat to the buildings and roads in the immediate vicinity. Extensive changes on the coast are also due to the action of hummocky lake ice.  相似文献

A total of over 32,000 demersal fish and epibenthic crustaceans belonging to 62 species were caught in 42 biweekly trawls from 10 stations in Yaquina Bay, Oregon, during 1967 and 1968. English sole,Parophrys vetulus, was the most abundant species. Seventeen species (13 fishes and 4 crustaceans) constituted 95% of the catch. Total numerical abundances of both individuals (mainly juvenile fishes) and species were greatest in the lower 12 km of the estuary during summer and early fall, a period of water mass stability and increased water temperature and salinity. This section of the estuary is used by many immature fishes and crustaceans as a “nursery area”. These fishes generally emigrate from the estuary as subadults in the fall around the onset of the rainy season. The fewest species were taken in January 1968 from the central, upper-estuarine, and riverine areas of the bay, this being a time when high rainfall and river discharge result in low salinity and temperature. Crustaceans (shrimp and subadult crabs) were generally most abundant in late winter and early spring throughout the estuary. Changes in diversity indices reflected variations in community structure, the influence of migratory species and juvenile fishes, and seasonal changes in dominance. Year-to-year fluctuations in abundance may be due, in part, to local hydrographic and meteorological conditions along the central Oregon coast.  相似文献

Lateral transport of fine-grained organic carbon particles can complicate the interpretation of paleoclimate records based on organic proxies. Here we investigated the effect of lateral transport on newly developed temperature and soil organic matter proxies, TEX86 and BIT index, respectively, in core MD88-769 recovered from the South East Indian Ridge. Our results show that TEX86 and BIT records in comparison to diatom and foraminifera records were representative for more local climate changes while alkenones and n-alkanes originated from distant areas by oceanic and atmospheric transport, respectively. This suggests that TEX86 and BIT paleoclimate records are primarily influenced by local conditions and less subjected to long-distance lateral transport than other organic proxies in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

中国海域辽阔,分为渤海、黄海、东海和南海4个海区。各海区沿中国大陆均有呈斑块状或条带状的泥质沉积分布。选取各沿岸泥的代表性样品,采用先进的XRF和ICP-MS等方法,测定了K、Li、Rb、Cs、Mg、Ca、Sr、Ba、Al、Fe、Ti、Be、Nb、Ta、W、Sn、Bi、La、Ce、Th。元素的地球化学研究表明:渤海和黄海、东海、南海沿岸泥的地球化学特征分别与黄河、长江、珠江沉积物的地球化学特征一致,显示了元素的物源效应;从渤海到南海,由于气候的变化使沿岸泥中某些元素有所流失或富集,显示了元素的气候效应;中国沿岸泥元素的丰度相对接近中国大陆沉积物的丰度,而异于西太平洋褐色粘土和深海粘土的丰度,显示了元素的亲陆性。  相似文献

Miocene volcanism in the Blue Mountains province of centralOregon produced diverse basaltic rocks. One set of these, thePicture Gorge Formation of the Columbia River Basalt Group,is well known. Others (Bowman Dam, Bear Creek, and Slide Creekflows) are relatively poorly known. Only the Picture Gorge flowsin the center of the province are typical continental floodbasalts. Basaltic rocks with calc-alkaline affinities (evolvedBear Creek flows, Slide Creek basalts) are found to the westand east. Basal Bear Creek flows closely resemble MORB and islandarc tholeiites, despite having erupted on a continental plate.Bowman Dam (formerly ‘Prineville’) basalts are richin K2O, P2O5, and Ba, and poor in Ni, Co, and Cr. Some of thesefeatures may reflect mantle metasomatism or crustal contamination.Thus, several currently debated theories of basalt petrogenesiscan be tested by studying flows erupted during Miocene timesin this relatively small area. Very few, if any, of these basaltic rocks represent primarymantle-derived magmas. Inferred depths of the pre-eruption magmareservoirs in which they were fractionated are shallow in thecenter of the province, deeper to the east and west. The E-W axis of Miocene calc-alkaline rocks in the Blue Mountainsprovince existed simultaneously with a N-S axis of calc-alkalineactivity in the Cascades that paralleled an offshore subductionzone. Current ideas of relationships among tectonic settingsand the compositions of volcanic rocks cannot easily be madeto conform with these facts.  相似文献

The living Tridacna maxima shell provides an example of a good substrate for many colonizing marine organisms (sclerobionts). Many factors affect the colonization choices of these organisms, such as morphology and size of the host shell, water depth (related to light penetration), suspended particulate load, and turbidity, among others. In addition to these factors, contamination plays an important role in the colonization choice along the coast of the Red Sea in Egypt. In the present study, 25 specimens of T. maxima shells of different sizes were collected at different depths from eight sites along the Egyptian Red Sea coast. There are two types of contamination at these sites. The first type results from anthropogenic activities, such as tourism, fishing, landfilling, shipping, renewal of ship operations, shipyards, dredging, and petroleum production; this type is represented by the El-Esh area, Hurghada Harbor, Safaga Harbor, and Quseir Harbor. The second type results from the natural inputs from wadis and is represented by the El-Esh area, Quseir Harbour, and Wadi El-Gemal, while the Abu Galawa Lagoon, the Abu Ghusun, and the Hamata Reefs represent uncontaminated areas (control areas). The present study documents the colonization phenomena on T. maxima shells at all of the study sites. These phenomena differed from one another in the abundance and diversity of sclerobionts, and unexpectedly, the contaminated areas recorded the highest abundance and diversity of colonizing organisms.  相似文献

一种新的分配系数计算方法是以分离结晶的岩浆岩元素丰度(x,y)互成幂函数关系为理论基础,以冰岛分离结晶成因的玄武-流纹岩系的元素含量为例,运用元素比值与含量成份演化线的斜率即丰度常数R,计算分离结晶岩浆岩系分配系数。该方法的关键是选取理想元素,即分配系数极小(D<=0.01)的即极亲岩浆元素,然后选择与它配对的元素,通过作图或计算出配对元素的总分配系,进而计算出其它元素的总分配系数。这种方法的理论基础严密、操作简单、结果直观、可靠,与所研究岩系的实际情况十分吻合。  相似文献

黄、东海是亚洲大陆与西太平洋物质和能量交换的重要海域之一,在复杂的环流动力背景下,悬浮体的跨陆架输运是海洋地质学的研究热点。目前的研究表明,黄、东海物质跨陆架输运主要通过三条路径,包括苏北沿岸流作用下向济州岛西南搬运、浙闽北部向东输运和台湾暖流向东分支作用下跨陆架输运。其控制机制有水深地形、陆架环流、冬季风、水体斜压结构等研究结论,但尚未取得共识。且研究结论多基于叶绿素、水温等表层遥感分析获得,悬浮泥沙尤其是中下层高浓度泥沙跨陆架向深海输运的机制有待深入研究,此外,其季节变化、时空演变、输运通量等有待研究,台风、冬季风暴等的作用有待甄别。  相似文献

渤海湾西岸全新世沉积速率对河流供给的响应   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1  
渤海湾西岸由北向南获取了3个钻孔,以全新世海相岩心为研究对象,采用AMS14C(Accelerator Mass Spectrometry14C,加速器质谱14C)测年方法建立年代框架并计算平均沉积速率,结合沉积物粒度组成及沿岸古河流三角洲发育历史,探讨了沉积速率对沿岸河流供给变化的时空响应。结果表明,早全新世—中全新世初期(11~6ka),渤海湾西岸整体沉积速率偏低,仅0.03~0.07cm/a,沉积物粒度较粗;中全新世6.43~4.97ka cal BP期间,NP3孔平均沉积速率为0.60~0.93cm/a,高于同期沿岸南部的CH110孔和BT113孔。沉积物组成以粉砂为主,粘土含量低,向上逐渐变粗,具三角洲反粒序特征。该时段的高沉积速率系渤海湾西北岸对潮白河、永定河及滦河沉积物供给的响应;中全新世晚期3.68~2.67ka cal BP期间,BT113孔沉积速率为0.27~1.4cm/a,高于同期沿岸北部CH110孔和NP3孔,沉积物组成以粉砂为主,粘土含量较NP3孔高,向上逐渐变粗,具三角洲反粒序特征。该时段的高沉积速率系渤海湾西岸南部对黄河沉积物供给的响应;晚全新世2.29~0.24ka cal BP期间,沿岸中部CH110孔沉积速率为0.55~0.91cm/a,高于同期沿岸南部的BT113孔和北部的NP3孔,该高沉积速率为渤海湾西岸中部对黄河和海河供给沉积的先后响应。  相似文献

藏南康马穹窿是北喜马拉雅片麻岩穹窿的经典代表,穹窿内发育上、下两条拆离断层并将穹窿分为三个构造层,其中上拆离断层分隔了上构造层未变质/轻微变质的特提斯喜马拉雅沉积岩系和中构造层的石榴石二云母片岩,而下拆离断层,即康马拆离断层,分隔了中构造层的石榴石二云母片岩和下构造层的片麻状二云母花岗岩。受康马拆离断层的影响,其上下两盘靠近拆离断层面处的岩石遭受强烈的韧性变形改造,形成了糜棱岩化石榴石二云母片岩和花岗质糜棱岩,宏观构造解析以及构造岩的显微构造分析表明,康马拆离断层经历了上盘向北的伸展拆离。本次研究采用40Ar/39Ar定年方法,选择拆离断层带内糜棱岩化石榴石二云母片岩中同变形新生白云母进行年代学测定,结果显示白云母40Ar/39Ar坪年龄为13.23±0.15 Ma,结合宏微观岩石矿物学分析,认为其代表了向北伸展拆离的变形时间,即康马拆离断层的活动时代,该时代与康马穹窿南部的藏南拆离系的活动时代一致,从年代学上暗示二者可能为同一条拆离断层,是在不同区域的出露,但该结论仍然需要更多地质、地球物理等方面的证据来证实。  相似文献

Monitoring and time-series analysis of the hydrological parameters electrical conductivity (EC), water pressure, precipitation and tide were carried out, to understand the characteristics of the parameter variations and their correlations at a coastal area in Busan, South Korea. The monitoring data were collected at a sharp interface between freshwater and saline water at the depth of 25 m below ground. Two well-logging profiles showed that seawater intrusion has largely expanded (progressed inland), and has greatly affected the groundwater quality in a coastal aquifer of tuffaceous sedimentary rock over a 9-year period. According to the time series analyses, the periodograms of the hydrological parameters present very similar trends to the power spectral densities (PSD) of the hydrological parameters. Autocorrelation functions (ACF) and partial autocorrelation functions (PACF) of the hydrological parameters were produced to evaluate their self-correlations. The ACFs of all hydrologic parameters showed very good correlation over the entire time lag, but the PACF revealed that the correlations were good only at time lag 1. Crosscorrelation functions (CCF) were used to evaluate the correlations between the hydrological parameters and the characteristics of seawater intrusion in the coastal aquifer system. The CCFs showed that EC had a close relationship with water pressure and precipitation rather than tide. The CCFs of water pressure with tide and precipitation were in inverse proportion, and the CCF of water pressure with precipitation was larger than that with tide.  相似文献

Tornadoes have been reported in various places around the world. The United States has the greatest number of tornado reports. In South America, tornadoes have been reported in Argentina and neighboring countries, such as Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay. There are no reports of tornadoes in Colombia in the worldwide databases. The first reported tornado event in Colombia took place in 2001. Since then, four tornados have affected the northern part of Colombia. The aim of this study is to characterize the events reported on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and their relation to local climate conditions. Before 2001, we had no knowledge regarding tornadoes in this area. However, during the past 10?years, these atmospheric phenomena have occurred in Barranquilla and the surrounding metropolitan area. Worldwide databases on tornadoes have not registered any such events in this part of South America. A review of the atmospheric information was conducted to determine the influence of air temperature increases on tornado formation. This study reveals that tornadoes have appeared between May and September, the months during which the city experiences the hottest temperatures of the year. The most significant tornado took place on September 15, 2006. This tornado lasted 15?min and travelled almost 10?km. Of the four registered tornadoes, this was the only one to affect the residential area of the city. The other three affected only the suburbs located in the surrounding metropolitan area. The most recent phenomenon related with tornadoes took place between July and August of 2010, during which three tornadoes could have potentially formed. However, a vortex never made contact with the ground. This meteorological analysis is very basic because climate information for these areas is limited. Still, what information we have reveals conditions that are typical of tornado formation: a mass of cold air combined with high air temperatures in a specific area. The data analysis reveals that tornados have occurred between May and June. These months correspond to the period characterized by the highest temperatures: average temperatures of 28.2?°C and maximum temperatures of 33.2?°C. This is also the period characterized by the greatest relative humidity and precipitation (84?% and 50?mm, respectively). Because the tornadoes reports only appeared in the last 10?years, it is not possible to determine whether there is a realistic relationship between their occurrence and large-scale climatic change. This article characterizes tornadoes as a new environmental threat and not an isolated phenomenon for this part of Colombia. Tornadoes in this region should thus be included in global databases.  相似文献

The toxicPfiesteria complex are a group of dinoflagellates that have received considerable attention in recent years as causative factors in fish kill or lesion events in North Carolina estuaries and in the Pocomoke River of Chesapeake Bay. In response to the potentialPfiesteria threat, the South Carolina Task Group on Harmful Algae was formed in late 1997 and implemented programs to monitor harmful algal blooms and respond to fish kills or lesion events with particular emphasis on the Bushy Park (Cooper River, Charleston) region, a site of annually recurrent menhaden lesion events.Pfiesteria piscicida, Pfiesteria shumwayae, andCryptoperidiniopsis spp. were documented in South Carolina estuaries. Routine monitoring and fish kill or lesion event sampling consistently indicated low abundances compared to estimates from similar programs in North Carolina and Maryland that sampled areas with a history ofPfiesteria toxic activity. The finding thatPfiesteria-like organism (PLO) abundances were always low in samples collected during menhaden lesion events in Bushy Park suggested other causes for lesion progression, althoughPfiesteria spp. could not be ruled out as a factor in lesion initiation. Based on the previously demonstrated positive relationship between PLO abundance, chlorophylla, and inorganic nutrient concentrations (in laboratory experiments and North Carolina field observations), we hypothesized that the relatively low abundance ofPfiesteria spp. and other PLO (e.g.,Cryptoperidiniopsis) in South Carolina estuaries is related to the relatively low supply of phytoplankton prey, as supported by interstate comparisons in chlorophylla concentrations. Nitrate concentrations were generally much lower in South Carolina estuaries. Estuarine eutrophication may be an important consideration in explaining interstate differences in susceptibility toPfiesteria-related toxic events.  相似文献

本文利用野外调查结果、二维地震反射剖面、钻井和测井数据建立了一条横穿库车河地区的南北向构造剖面,将库车冲断褶皱带划分为北部褶皱带、克依构造带、秋立塔格背斜带和亚肯背斜带。作者在库车冲断褶皱带北部发现了渐新世—中新世角度不整合,在库车南部亚肯背斜和东秋立塔格背斜顶部发现了构造生长地层,通过确定构造生长地层的底界,利用库车河地区古近系(下第三系)—第四系磁极柱,判断亚肯背斜和东秋立塔格背斜构造生长地层的沉积时代为5.2±0.2 Ma。上述结果暗示库车冲断褶皱带北部山前带的变形始于渐新世,并且经历了中新世、上新世的构造改造,南部秋立塔格背斜带和亚肯背斜带形成较晚,可能是上新世开始变形,而且变形活动持续至今,由此看来库车冲断褶皱带的变形时代由北向南变新。作者估算东秋立塔格背斜上新世以来(5.2±0.2 Ma)的构造变形量为7.5 km,变形速率为1.5 mm/a。  相似文献
