The proper motion in galactic latitude of O-B stars enables us to detect the kinematic behaviour of an optical counterpart of the large-scale warp of the HI gas layer in our Galaxy. A selected set of the proper motions of about 350 O-B stars within 3kpc from the sun (R0=8.5kpc) is analyzed on the proper motion systems of N30, FK4, and FK5. A remarkable differece in the kinematic behaviour of the warp appears between the old systems (N30 and FK4) and FK5-system. On the old systems, the O-B stars in the belt 8.5kpcR<9.5kpc exhibit a systematic z-motion upward from the galactic plane forl180° and downward forl>180° with the mean proper motions of about ±0".4/century, respectively. On the other hand, the results on the FK5-system show no meaningful systematic z-motion, even though the O-B star layer exterior to the solar circle is inclined (3°) with respect to the galactic plane. These findings can neither be inferred from the model of the oblique material flow nor from the concepts of the precessional stellar rings and of the bending oscillation of a stellar disk. The remarkable difference in the kinematic behaviour of the warp, appearing between the old and new systems, is caused mainly by the conversion of the proper motions on the old systems into those on the J2000.0 frame. The conversion near the galactic plane is given by µb(FK4(J2000.0))–µb(FK4)–0.50 sinl/century. The implication of this relation is discussed in connection with the warping motion of stars detected here.  相似文献

Short-period comets with P 15 yr represent one of the most complete comet samples. The magnitude distribution of these comets was analysed using a maximum likelihood method. The brightness (magnitude) index for the comets with H 10 11 mag was estimated together with the large sample errors and found to be 0.62 ± 0.09. It was clear that many faint comets with H 10 > 11 mag remain to be discovered. Some of the faint, smaller comets have probably been removed from the distribution altogether.Observational selection was also apparent for the sample of comets with perihelia q < 1.5 AU. It was found that comets satisfying the combined criteria P 15 yr, H 10 11 mag, q < 1.5 AU probably represent the most complete set of comets available. The brightness index of this sample estimated by maximum likelihood was 0.69 ± 0.14. This translates into a mass distribution index s of 1.69 ± 0.14 indicating that most of the mass is contained in a few of the larger comets rather than spread throughout the smaller ones. This distribution, although modified by mass loss, is most likely to have been produced by a process of particle accretion.  相似文献

It is pointed out that a Cepheid period–luminosity relation with a zero-point from Hipparcos trigonometrical parallaxes and a consistent reddening system zero-point implies that some recent estimates of H 0 based on the Cepheid scale should be increased by ∼8 per cent. This result avoids using the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as an intermediary point but is not significantly different from the result obtained by Feast & Catchpole via the LMC. A number of other issues are discussed, including metallicity effects on Cepheid distances and reddenings, and the age of metal-poor globular clusters.  相似文献

A 15 year project to establish a dynamical reference system utilizing ground-based and Space Telescope observations of 34 minor planets is being undertaken. The orbits of these minor planets will be knit into a common system through the use of crossing point observations. The system of orbits thus established can be used to measure long arcs in the sky (similar to the function of a transit circle) and can be used to detect individual star errors as well as residual periodic effects in the fundamental reference system. The minor planet dynamical reference system will also provide an independent method to establish the zero point and the solid-body rotation of the HIPPARCOS reference system.  相似文献

The absolute luminosities and homogeneity of early-time infrared (IR) light curves of type Ia supernovae are examined. Eight supernovae are considered. These are selected to have accurately known epochs of maximum blue light as well as having reliable distance estimates and/or good light curve coverage. Two approaches to extinction correction are considered. Owing to the low extinction in the IR, the differences in the corrections via the two methods are small. Absolute magnitude light curves in the J , H and K bands are derived. Six of the events, including five established 'branch-normal' supernovae, show similar coeval magnitudes. Two of these, supernovae (SNe) 1989B and 1998bu, were observed near maximum infrared light. This occurs about 5 d before maximum blue light. Absolute peak magnitudes of about −19.0, −18.7 and −18.8 in J , H and K respectively were obtained. The two spectroscopically peculiar supernovae in the sample, SNe 1986G and 1991T, also show atypical IR behaviour. The light curves of the six similar supernovae can be represented fairly consistently with a single light curve in each of the three bands. In all three IR bands the dispersion in absolute magnitude is about 0.15 mag, and this can be accounted for within the uncertainties of the individual light curves. No significant variation of absolute IR magnitude with B -band light curve decline rate, Δ m 15( B ), is seen over the range 0.87<Δ m 15( B )<1.31. However, the data are insufficient to allow us to decide whether or not the decline rate relation is weaker in the IR than in the optical region. IR light curves of type Ia supernovae should eventually provide cosmological distance estimates that are of equal, or even superior, quality to those obtained in optical studies.  相似文献

The improved calibration of absolute magnitude versus spectral type and luminosity class is presented for carbon stars and for K- to M-type giants. Astronomers adopt a single system of star positions and motions for reduction of other observations. Relative observations of faint minor planets may make a significant contribution to the evaluation of systematic errors in this Fundamental System, and provide means of deriving a position system in ecliptic coordinates. New techniques, such as observations with the Space Telescope, must be evaluated for possible incorporation into a revision of the Fundamental System.A historical summary of the application of minor planet observations to the formation of astronomical coordinate systems is given. Then a project to investigate the systematic accuracy of the Fundamental System is outlined. Of the four observation types considered, crossing point observations provide a unique stabilizing influence on any coordinate system incorporating them. The concept of the cosmic-ray path-length distribution is examined. The corresponding cosmic-ray propagation calculational procedure has been justified theoretically at relativistic energies (Ginzburg and Syrovatskii, 1964) where the effects of ionization energy loss are negligible. The present paper extends the use of the path-length distribution concept in cosmic-ray propagation calculations to nonrelativistic energies. Sufficient constraints to effect this extension are presented. The solution of the cosmic-ray propagation equations in terms of a Green's function approach is also investigated and is used to provide a formulation of the path-length distribution at non-relativistic as well as relativistic energies in terms of the cosmic-ray source distribution and the propagation characteristics of the interstellar medium. The leaky-box model of cosmic-ray propagation is also examined.  相似文献

A microwave magnitude is defined as a logarithmic measure of the energy content of a microwave event. The distributions of microwave magnitudes are derived for collections of bursts that:
  1. Occurred during two periods in solar cycle 20, one relatively early and the other relatively late;
  2. Occurred in association with optical flares in particular centres of activity.
No dependence on the phase in the solar cycle has been found. One centre of activity was found that produced a distribution different from normal. The distribution of microwave magnitudes can be satisfactorily represented by the expression n(m) = const (m/α)e ?(m/α) 2. A phenomenological model for the flare build-up process is indicated which leads to a distribution of this very shape.  相似文献

The integratedUBV characteristics of 50 galactic clusters, computed for the clusters' physical members only (segregated on the basis of the proper motions or radial velocities) are discussed.On the basis of a comparison between the empirically-obtained dependences and their theoretical counterparts (Searleet al., 1973) a suggestion has been made that the number of the massive stars (with masses>10M ) in the initial mass function must be considerably greater.Evolutionary effects on integrated parameters and their dependences have been discussed. An attempt at an evolutionary interpretation of the integrated luminosity function for galactic clusters, obtained by Starikova (1962) in the light of the self-obtained dependences has been made.  相似文献

A catalogue of photoelectric stellar magnitudes and colours in the UBVR Johnson system in 47 sky areas with galaxies near the Main Galactic Meridian is presented. The catalogue includes 1141 stars within the V magnitude interval 4m.5–15m.5. The rms errors are ±0.014, ±0.026, ±0.012, ±0.016 mag for stellar magnitudes V and colours (U – B),(B – V),(V – R), respectively. The catalogue contains accurate equatorial coordinates (α, δ)1950.0, too.  相似文献

We present a new catalog of absolute nuclear magnitudes of Jupiter family (JF) comets, which is an updated version of our previous catalog [Tancredi, G., Fernández, J.A., Rickman, H., Licandro, J., 2000. Astron. Astrophys. Suppl. Ser. 146, 73-90]. From the new catalog we find a linear cumulative luminosity function (CLF) of slope 0.54±0.05 for JF comets with q?2.5 AU. By considering this CLF combined with the few measured geometric albedos with their respective uncertainties, and assuming a canonical albedo of 0.035±0.012 for those comets with undetermined albedos, we derive a cumulative size distribution that follows a power-law of index −2.7±0.3. The slope is similar to that derived from some theoretical collisional models and from some populations of Solar System bodies like the trans-neptunian objects. We also discuss and compare our size distribution with those by other authors that have recently appeared in the literature. Some striking differences in the computed slopes are explained in terms of biases in the studied samples, the different weights given to the brightest members of the samples, and discrepancies in the values of a few absolute nuclear magnitudes. We also compute sizes and fractions of active surface area of JF comets from their estimated absolute nuclear magnitudes and their water production rates. With the outgassing model that we use, about 60% of the computed fractions f of active surface area are found to be smaller than 0.2, with one case (28P/Neujmin 1) of no more than 0.001, which suggests that JF comets may transit through stages of very low activity, or even dormancy. There is an indication that JF comets with radii RN?3 km have active fractions f?0.01, which might be due to the rapid formation of insulating dust mantles on larger nuclei.  相似文献
