We searched for identification between the Large Bright Quasar Survey and the latest whole-sky survey catalog of 4.85 GHz radio sources. We found 34 quasars to have radio counterparts and they proved to be radio-loud objects. We found a nearly linear correlation between their radio and optical luminosities in this, probably the largest so far, sample of radio-loud quasars. 相似文献

We explore the relationship between the extended radio and line emission for a radio-loud quasar sample including both core-dominated and lobe-dominated quasars. A strong correlation is present between the extended radio and broad-line emission. The core emission is also correlated with the broad-line emission for core-dominated quasars in the sample. The statistical behaviour of the core emission of lobe-dominated quasars is rather different from that of core-dominated quasars. The extended radio luminosity is a good tracer for jet power, while the core luminosity can only be a jet power tracer for core-dominated quasars. 相似文献

We present a correlation between radio and broad-line emission for a sample of radio-loud quasars that supports a close link between accretion processes and relativistic jets. BL Lac objects seem to follow the statistical behaviour of quasars, but with fainter broad-line emission. 相似文献

We present the first results from a major HST WFPC2 imaging study aimed at providing the first statistically meaningful comparison of the morphologies, luminosities, scalelengths and colours of the host galaxies of radio-quiet quasars, radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies. We describe the design of this study and present the images that have been obtained for the first half of our 33-source sample. We find that the hosts of all three classes of luminous AGN are massive elliptical galaxies, with scalelengths ≃10 kpc, and R − K colours consistent with mature stellar populations. Most importantly, this is first unambiguous evidence that, just like radio-loud quasars, essentially all radio-quiet quasars brighter than M R =−24 reside in massive ellipticals. This result removes the possibility that radio 'loudness' is directly linked to host galaxy morphology, but is however in excellent accord with the black hole/spheroid mass correlation recently highlighted by Magorrian et al. We apply the relations given by Magorrian et al. to infer the expected Eddington luminosity of the putative black hole at the centre of each of the spheroidal host galaxies we have uncovered. Comparison with the actual nuclear R -band luminosities suggests that the black holes in most of these galaxies are radiating at a few per cent of the Eddington luminosity; the brightest host galaxies in our low- z sample are capable of hosting quasars with M R ≃− 28, comparable to the most luminous quasars at z ≃3. Finally, we discuss our host-derived black hole masses in the context of the radio luminosity:black hole mass correlation recently uncovered for nearby galaxies by Franceschini et al., and consider the resulting implications for the physical origin of radio loudness. 相似文献

The central engine causing the production of jets in radio sources may work intermittently, accelerating shells of plasma with different mass, energy and velocity. Faster but later shells can then catch up slower earlier ones. In the resulting collisions shocks develop, converting some of the ordered bulk kinetic energy into magnetic field and random energy of the electrons which then radiate. We propose that this internal shock scenario , which is the scenario generally thought to explain the observed gamma-ray burst radiation, can also work for radio sources in general, and for blazars in particular. We investigate in detail this idea, simulating the birth, propagation and collision of shells, calculating the spectrum produced in each collision, and summing the locally produced spectra from those regions of the jet which are simultaneously active in the observer's frame. We can thus construct snapshots of the overall spectral energy distribution, time-dependent spectra and light curves. This allows us to characterize the predicted variability at any frequency, study correlations between the emission at different frequencies, specify the contribution of each region of the jet to the total emission, and find correlations between flares at high energies and the birth of superluminal radio knots and/or radio flares. The model has been applied to reproduce qualitatively the observed properties of 3C 279. Global agreement in terms of both spectra and temporal evolution is found. In a forthcoming work, we will explore the constraints that this scenario sets on the initial conditions of the plasma injected in the jet and the shock dissipation for different classes of blazars. 相似文献

We present a study of the X-ray emission for a sample of radio-detected quasars constructed from the cross-matches between SDSS,FIRST catalogs and XMM-Newton archives.A sample of radio-quiet SDSS quasars without FIRST radio detection is also assembled for comparison. We construct the optical and X-ray composite spectra normalized at rest frame 4215 A(or 2200 A)for both radio-loud quasars(RLQs)and radio-quiet quasars(RQQs)at z≤3.2,with matched X-ray completeness of 19%,redshift and optical luminosity. While the optical composite spectrum of RLQs is similar to that of RQQs,we find that RLQs have a higher X-ray composite spectrum than RQQs,consistent with previous studies in the literature.By dividing the radio-detected quasars into radio loudness bins,we find the X-ray composite spectra are generally higher with increasing radio loudness. Moreover,a significant correlation is found between the optical-to-X-ray spectral index and radio loudness, and there is a unified multi-correlation between the radio and X-ray luminosities and radio loudness in radio-detected quasars. These results could be possibly explained with the corona-jet model,in which the corona and jet are directly related. 相似文献

The unified scheme in which the observed differences in the radio properties of the two classes of radio-loud quasars; the core- and lobe-dominated quasars (CDQs and LDQs) arise because they are seen at different angles to the line of sight has been investigated using the observed median angular size-redshift (-z) relation for two well defined samples. It is shown that the median angular size of LDQs exceeded that of CDQs by a factor of3 in any given redshift bin. This is qualitatively in agreement with the unified scheme in which the radio axes of CDQs are closer to the line of sight than those of LDQs. 相似文献

We present the results of multiwavelength observations of cores and hotspots, at L , C , X and U bands with the Very Large Array, of a matched sample of radio galaxies and quasars selected from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue . We use these observations to determine the spectra of cores and hotspots, and test the unified scheme for radio galaxies and quasars. Radio cores have been detected at all wavelengths in all of the quasars in our sample, whereas only ∼50 per cent of the galaxies have cores detected in at least one of the wavelengths . The degree of core prominence in this sample is consistent with the unified scheme for radio galaxies and quasars. A comparison of the distributions of the two-point spectral index of the cores in our sample of lobe-dominated quasars, with the distributions in a matched sample of core-dominated quasars, shows that the distributions for these two classes are significantly different, and this is consistent with the expectations of the unified scheme. The difference in the spectral indices of the two hotspots on opposite sides is also significantly larger for quasars than for radio galaxies, as is expected in the unified scheme. We also investigate the relationship between the spectral index of the hotspots and the redshift or luminosity for our sample of sources. 相似文献

We present a calculation of the blazar contribution to the extragalactic diffuse γ -ray background (EGRB) in the EGRET energy range. Our model is based on inverse-Compton scattering as the dominant γ -ray production process in the jets of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lac objects, and on the unification scheme of radio-loud AGN. According to this picture, blazars represent the beamed fraction of the Fanaroff–Riley radio galaxies (FR galaxies).
The observed log N –log S distribution and redshift distribution of both FSRQs and BL Lacs constrain our model. Depending slightly on the evolutionary behaviour of blazars, we find that unresolved AGN underproduce the intensity of the extragalactic background radiation. With our model only 20–40 per cent of the extragalactic background emission can be explained by unresolved blazars if we integrate to a maximum redshift of Zmax =3. For Z max =5, blazars could account for 40–80 per cent of the EGRB. Roughly 70–90 per cent of the AGN contribution to the EGRB would result from BL Lacs. While the systematic uncertainties in our estimate for the FSRQ contribution appear small, in the case of BL Lacs our model parameters are not consistent with the results from studies in other wavelength regimes, and therefore may have larger systematic uncertainties. Thus we end up with two possibilities, depending on whether we underpredict or overpredict the BL Lac contribution: either unresolved AGN cannot account for the entire EGRB, or unresolved BL Lacs produce the observed background.
We predict a significant flattening of the γ -ray log N –log S function in the next two decades of flux below the EGRET threshold. 相似文献

Although radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) constitute ≳ 90 per cent of optically identified quasar samples, their radio properties are only poorly understood. In this paper we present the results of a multi-frequency VLA study of 27 low-redshift RQQs. We detect radio emission from 20 objects, half of which are unresolved (≤ 0.24 arcsec). In cases where significant structure can be resolved, double, triple and linear radio sources on scales of a few kpc are found. The radio emission (typically) has a steep spectrum (α ∼ 0.7, where S ∝ ν−α ), and high brightness temperatures ( T B ≥ 105 K) are measured in some of the radio components. The RQQs form a natural extension to the radio luminosity–absolute magnitude distribution of nearby Seyfert 1s. We conclude that a significant fraction of the radio emission in RQQs originates in a compact nuclear source directly associated with the quasar. There are no significant differences between the radio properties of RQQs with elliptical hosts and those in disc galaxies within the current sample. 相似文献

We present total-intensity and linear-polarization observations at a single epoch for a sample of 11 quasars and one BL Lac object. The data were taken with the VLA A array at λλ 20, 18, 6 and 2 cm. We examine the variation of the degree of polarization, p , and polarization position angle, PA, with wavelength, and attempt to determine the rotation measure, RM, of the cores in these sources. The degree of polarization does not exhibit any systematic variation with wavelength, the median values ranging from 2.3 to 3.5 per cent at the different wavelengths. The variation of PA with λ2 is not linear over the entire wavelength range. However, for most sources the λλ 20-, 18- and 6-cm PAs do follow such a linear relationship, yielding a median |RM| of about 15 rad m−2 . In contrast, the λλ 6- and 2-cm observations give a median |RM| of about 129 rad m−2 . The long-wavelength emission is likely to originate from a spatially different part of the milliarcsec-scale jet from the λ 2-cm emission, which could turn over at a higher frequency and is likely to be more compact and located closer to the quasar nucleus. We have attempted to obtain linear fits over the entire wavelength range allowing for n π ambiguities in the PAs, but the fits are not statistically significant. The low values of RM for these core-dominated sources suggest that either the radio emission from the jet intercepts few of the emission-line clouds and their confining medium, or the clouds have a small filling factor and are possibly magnetically confined. 相似文献

We present multifrequency observations of a sample of 15 radio-emitting broad absorption-line quasars (BAL QSOs), covering a spectral range between 74 MHz and 43 GHz. They mostly display convex radio spectra which typically peak at about 1–5 GHz (in the observer's rest frame), flatten at MHz frequencies, probably due to synchrotron self-absorption, and become steeper at high frequencies, i.e. ν≳ 20 GHz. Very Large Array (VLA) 22-GHz maps (HPBW ∼80 mas) show unresolved or very compact sources, with linear projected sizes of ≤1 kpc. About two-thirds of the sample looks unpolarized or weakly polarized at 8.4 GHz, frequency in which reasonable upper limits could be obtained for polarized intensity. Statistical comparisons have been made between the spectral index distributions of samples of BAL and non-BAL QSOs, both in the observed and in the rest frame, finding steeper spectra among non-BAL QSOs. However, constraining this comparison to compact sources results in no significant differences between both distributions. This comparison is consistent with BAL QSOs not being oriented along a particular line of sight. In addition, our analysis of the spectral shape, variability and polarization properties shows that radio BAL QSOs share several properties common to young radio sources like compact steep spectrum or gigahertz peaked spectrum sources. 相似文献

Angular correlations of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with cosmologically distant sources may provide clues to these mysterious events. We compare cosmic ray tracks with energies above 1020 eV to a compilation of radio-loud compact QSO positions. The statistical method emphasizes invariant quantities and a test of statistical independence of track and source distributions. Statistical independence is ruled out by several independent statistics at confidence levels of orders 97–99%, indicating that track directions and QSO source positions are correlated at a significant level. 相似文献

We present integral field spectroscopy of a small sample of radio-loud quasars at intermediate redshift (0.26< z <0.60), most of which are associated with large radio sources. All have oxygen line emission extended over tens of kpc, and these nebulae display a diverse range in both morphology and kinematic behaviour. Two quasars show 'plumes' of extended line emission, two show a clumpy structure and a further one shows a smooth distribution. There is no clear pattern with regard to the distribution of the ionized gas in relation to the radio source axis; the extended emission-line regions are found both parallel and perpendicular – and also totally unrelated to – the radio axis. The velocity structure of the ionized gas ranges from essentially static to apparent smooth rotation, and in two cases shows a clear association with the radio source. Given the disparity in properties, the nebulae all show a surprisingly similar ionization state, as measured by the extended lines of [O ii ] λ 3727 and [O iii ] λ 5007. Assuming the gas is ionized by at least the nearby quasar nucleus, we use the emission line ratios to infer a pressure in the ionized gas; in all cases we find it to be at high pressure, suggesting confinement by an external (probably intracluster) medium. 相似文献

We report the discovery of two radio-loud quasars with redshifts greater than 4: GB1428+4217, with z =4.72, and GB1713+2148 with z =4.01. This doubles the number of published radio-selected quasars with z >4, bringing the total to 4. GB1428+4217 is the third most distant quasar known and the highest redshift radio and X-ray source currently known. It has a radio flux density at 5 GHz of 259±31 mJy and an optical magnitude of R ∼20.9. The rest frame absolute UV magnitude, Mv (1450 Å), is −26.7, similar to that of the archetypal radio-selected quasar 3C273 [ z =0.158; Mv (1450 Å)=−26.4]. GB1428+4217 is tentatively detected in ROSAT PSPC observations, which has been confirmed by more recent ROSAT observations described in a companion paper by Fabian et al. Both quasars were discovered during the CCD imaging phase of an investigation into the evolution of the space density of radio-loud quasars at high redshift. Combined with our earlier survey results, these objects give a lower limit on the space density of quasars with radio power P 5 GHz >5.8×1026 W Hz−1 sr−1 between z =4 and z =5 of 1.4±0.9×10−10 Mpc−3 . This can be compared to 2.9±0.2×10−10 Mpc−3 at z =2 from Dunlop & Peacock for flat-spectrum sources of the same luminosity. 相似文献
