Recent rocket observations of the N2 V-K (Vegard-Kaplan) system in the aurora have been reinterpreted using an atmospheric model based on mass spectrometer measurements in an aurora of similar intensity at the same time of year. In contrast to the original interpretation, we find that population by cascade from the C3Πu and B3Πg states in the A3Σu+v=0,1 levels, as calculated using recently measured electron excitation cross sections, accurately accounts for the observed relative emission rates (IV-K/12PG0.0). In addition there is no need to change the production rate of A 3 Σ u+ molecules relative to that of C3Πuv=0 as a function of altitude in order to fit the profile of the deactivation probability to the atmospheric model. Quenching of A 3 Σ u+ molecules at high altitudes is dominated by atomic oxygen. The rate constants for the v=0 and v=1 levels are 8 × 10−11 cm3 sec−1 and 1.7 × 10−10 cm3 sec−1 respectively, as determined using the model atmosphere mentioned above. Recent observations with a helium cooled mass spectrometer suggest that conventional mass spectrometer measurements tend to underestimate the atomic oxygen relative concentration. The rate coefficients may therefore be too large by as much as a factor of 3. Below 130 Km we find that it is possible to account for the deactivation in bright auroras by invoking large nitric oxide concentrations, similar to those recently observed mass spectrometrically and using a rate constant of 8 × 10−11 cm3 sec−1 for both the v=1 levels. This rate constant is very nearly the same as that measured in the laboratory (7 × 10−11 cm3 sec−1). Molecular oxygen appears not to play a significant role in deactivating the lower A 3 Σ u+ levels.  相似文献

Using the proper motion and parallax data for 1011 O-B stars in the Hipparcos Catalogue we have derived the Oort constants, A = 17.60 ± 0.21 (km/s)/kpc, B = −14.62 ± 0.20 (km/s)/kpc, and a solar velocity V = 16.7 ± 0.10 km/s in the direction l = 45.3° ± 2.8°, b = 21.0° ± 2.3°. For a galactocentric distance of the sun of R0 = 8.5 kpc, we then get a galactic rotational velocity of the solar neighbourhood of Vlsr = 273.9 km/s, obviously much higher than the IAU published value of 220 km/s. We have investigated the cause for this difference.  相似文献

We have constructed a one-dimensional model of the nightside ionosphere of Venus in which it is assumed that the ionization is maintained by day-to-night transport of atomic ions. Downward fluxes of O+, C+ and N+ in the ratios measured on the dayside at high altitudes are imposed at the upper boundary of the model (about 235 km). We discuss the resulting sources and sinks of the molecular ions NO+,CO+,N2+,CO2+ and O2+. As the O+ flux is increased, the peak density of O+ increases proportionally and the altitude of the peak decreases. The O2+ peak density is approximately proportional to the square root of the O+ flux and the peak rises as the O+ flux increases. NO+ densities near the peak are relatively unaffected by changes in the O+ flux. If the ionosphere is maintained mostly by transport, the ratio of the peak densities of O+ and O2+ indicates the downward flux ofO+, independent of the absolute magnitudes of the densities. The densities of mass-28 ions are, however, still considered to be the most sensitive indicator of the importance of electron precipitation. We examine here the inbound and outbound portions of six early nightside orbits with low periapsis and use data from the Pioneer Venus orbiter ion mass spectrometer, the retarding potential analyzer and the electron temperature probe to determine the relative importance of ion transport and electron precipitation. For most of the orbits, precipitation is inferred to be of low to moderate importance. Only for orbit 65, which was the first nightside orbit published by Taylor et al. [J. geophys. Res. 85, 7765 (1980)] and for the inbound portion of orbit 73 does the ionization structure appear to be greatly affected by electron precipitation.  相似文献

Saturn’s diffuse E ring consists of many tiny (micron and sub-micron) grains of water ice distributed between the orbits of Mimas and Titan. Various gravitational and non-gravitational forces perturb these particles’ orbits, causing the ring’s local particle density to vary noticeably with distance from the planet, height above the ring-plane, hour angle and time. Using remote-sensing data obtained by the Cassini spacecraft in 2005 and 2006, we investigate the E-ring’s three-dimensional structure during a time when the Sun illuminated the rings from the south at high elevation angles (>15°). These observations show that the ring’s vertical thickness grows with distance from Enceladus’ orbit and its peak brightness density shifts from south to north of Saturn’s equator plane with increasing distance from the planet. These data also reveal a localized depletion in particle density near Saturn’s equatorial plane around Enceladus’ semi-major axis. Finally, variations are detected in the radial brightness profile and the vertical thickness of the ring as a function of longitude relative to the Sun. Possible physical mechanisms and processes that may be responsible for some of these structures include solar radiation pressure, variations in the ambient plasma, and electromagnetic perturbations associated with Saturn’s shadow.  相似文献

Data taken with ten Cosmic Ray Tracking (CRT) detectors and the HEGRA air-shower array on La Palma, Canary Islands, have been analysed to investigate changes of the cosmic ay mass composition at the ‘knee’ of the cosmic-ray flux spectrum near 1015 eV energy. The analysis is based on the angular distributions of particles in air showers. HEGRA data provided the shower size, direction, and core position and CRT data the particle track information. It is shown that the angular distribution of muons in air showers is sensitive to the composition over a wide range of shower sizes and, thus, primary cosmic-ray energies with little systematic uncertainties. Results can be easily expressed in terms of ln A of primary cosmic rays. In the lower part of the energy range covered, we have considerable overlap with direct composition measurements by the JACEE collaboration and find compatible results in the observed rise of ln A. Above about 1015 eV energy we find no or at most a slow further rise of ln A. Simple cosmic-ray composition models are presented which are fully consistent with our results as well as the JACEE flux and composition measurements and the flux measurements of the Tibet ASγ collaboration. Minimal three-parameter composition models defined by the same power-law slope of all elements below the knee and a common change in slope at a fixed rigidity are inconsistent with these data.  相似文献

Saturn's icy ring particles, with their low thermal conductivity, are almost ideal for the operation of the Yarkovsky effects (photon thrust due to temperature gradients across the ring particles). An extremely simple case of the Yarkovsky effects is examined here, in which orbital evolution is computed as though each particle travels around Saturn alone in a circular orbit, so that there are no collisions, shadowing, or irradiance from other particles; nor are resonances, tumbling, or micrometeoroid erosion considered. The orbital evolution for random spin orientations appears to be a competition between two effects: the seasonal Yarkovsky effect, which makes orbits contract, and the Yarkovsky-Schach effect, which makes orbits expand. There are values of the far infrared and visible particle albedos for which (working radially out from the planet) the along-track particle acceleration S is negative, then positive, and then negative again; the region for which S>0 is interpreted as a region where stable rings are possible. Typical timescales for centimeter-sized particles to travel half a Saturn radius are 107-108 yr. Collisions, shadowing, and resonances may lengthen the timescales, perhaps considerably. It is speculated here that the C ring may be depleted of particles because of the seasonal Yarkovsky effect, and small particles that are present in the C ring ultimately fall on Saturn, possibly creating a “Ring of Fire” as they enter the planet's atmosphere.  相似文献

Accurate observations of the elevation angle of arrival of 20 MHz signals from the polar orbiting satellite Beacon-B for a 20 month period have provided transmission ionograms which may be reduced to give Hp, the scale height at the peak of the ionosphere. Noon seasonal averages of Hp are 1.35 (in winter) to 1.55 (in summer) times greater than the scale height obtained from bottom-side ionograms. A comparison of scale height at the peak with routine measurements of total content and peak electron density indicates that the O+/H+ transition level is above 1000 km during the day but comes down to about 630 km on winter nights. A predawn peak in the overall scale height (∝ total content/peak density) is caused by a lowering of the layer to a region of increased recombination and is magnified in winter by low O+/H+ transition levels. After sunrise in winter and equinoxes the overall scale height is less than the scale height at the peak, implying an outwards flux of ionisation which lasts for about three hours. The summer evening increase in ƒ0F2 requires both a cooling and a raising of the layer for its occurrence.  相似文献

An integral, governing steady flows in an isolated thin magnetic flux tube in the hydrostatic plane-stratified atmosphere, has been obtained. The integral, that we named as the shape integral, is expressed as (1 − MA2)B cos θ = const. Here MA2 is the Alfven Mach number, B is the magnetic field strength and θ is the flux tube inclination to the horizontal. The shape integral should hold for most loop models because it represents just the momentum balance laws and has no relation to any energy balance mode. Its application to the isothermal and static cases is discussed and illustrated.  相似文献

The method of identifying absorption line systems in QSO spectra (Cui et al. 1983; Chen et al. 1983) is further developed here. Certain limitations of the method and their improvements are discussed. Certain other problems requiring further study are pointed out. The improved method is applied to PKS 0528-250, and gives two new absorption line systems Za = 0.065 and 0.0345 in addition to the four systems Za = 2.8110, 2.8130, 2.5275, 2.1410, consistent with the systems A1A2, B, C of Norton et al. (1980). However, the systems D1, D2, E, F and G of Chen and Norton (1984) are not recovered. The reason for this discrepancy is discussed.  相似文献

We use a 1-D chemical diffusive model, in conjunction with the measured neutral atmospheric structure, to analyze the Voyager RSS electron density, ne, profiles for the ionospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. As with previous studies we find serious difficulties in explaining the ne measurements. The model calculates ionospheres for both Jupiter and Saturn with ne peaks of 10 times the measured peaks at altitudes which are 900–1000 km lower than the altitude of peaks in the RSS electron densities. Based on our knowledge of neutral atmospheric structure, ionization sources, and known recombination mechanisms it seems that, vibrational excitation of H2 must play some role in the conversion of slowly radiatively recombining H+ ions to the relatively more rapidly recombining H2+ and H3+ ions. In addition, vertical ion flow induced by horizontal neutral winds or electric fields probably also play some role in maintaining the plasma peaks observed both for Jupiter and Saturn to be at high altitudes. For the ionosphere of Saturn, the electron densities are affected by a putative influx of H2O molecules, ΦH2O, from the rings. To reproduce the RSS V2 exit ne results model requires an influx of ΦH2O 2 × 107 molecules cm−2 s−1 without invoking H2f vibrational excitation. To maintain the model ne peak at the measured altitude vertical plasma drift maintained by meridional winds or vertical electric fields is required. The amounts of H2O are consistent with earlier estimates of Connerney and Waite (1984) and do not violate any observational constraints.  相似文献

Correlation of cosmic-ray intensity (I) with the solar magnetic field expanded into the spherical surface harmonics, Bns(n 9), by Hoeksema and Scherrer has been studied using the following regression equation:
, where are subgroups of Bns classified in ascending order of n, and τi is the time lag of I behind correlation coefficient between the observed and simulated intensities (Iobs, Isml) in the period 1976–1985 is 0.87 and considerably better than that derived from any single index of solar activity. The lag time τ3 is greater than others, indicating that the higher order magnetic disturbances effective to the cosmic-ray modulation have a longer lifetime in space than the lower order disturbances. The rigidity spectrum of the cosmic-ray intensity variation responsible for AI due to the dipole moment is harder than those for others (A2,A3), indicating that the lowest order (i.e. largest scale) magnetic disturbances can modulate cosmic rays more effectively than the higher order disturbances. As another result of the present analysis, it has been found that the intensity depends also on the polarity of the polar magnetic field of the Sun; the residual (IobsIsml) of the simulation changes its sign from positive to negative with a time lag (0–5 Carrington rotation periods) behind the directional change of the solar magnetic dipole moment from northward to southward, and has a softer rigidity spectrum than AiS. The dependence is consistent with the result having been obtained in the previous period, 1936–1976, by one (K.N.) of the present authors. The polarity dependence can be found also in the 22-year variation of the time lags obtained every solar cycle in the period 1936–1985. The theoretical interpretation of these polarity dependences is discussed on the basis of the diffusion-convection-drift model.  相似文献

The gravitational influence of moonlets or satellites on the radial structure of the rings of Saturn has been calculated numerically. A drastic change in the surface mass density is obtained even after a single scattering process of the ring particles on a moonlet (satellite). The final surface density shows a significant radial structure, which has been used to estimate the radius and the mass of moonlets or satellites embedded in rings of low optical depth (E ring, Cassini division, C ring).  相似文献

Characteristics of the astrophysical important Stark broadened 388.86 nm, 471.32 nm and 501.56 nm He I spectral line profiles have been measured at electron densities between 4.4·1022 and 8.2·1022 m−3 and electron temperatures between 18,000 and 33,000 K in plasmas created in five various discharge conditions using a linear, low-pressure, pulsed arc as an optically thin and reproductive plasma source operated in a helium–nitrogen–oxygen gas mixture. On the basis of the observed asymmetry of the line profiles, we have obtained their ion broadening parameters (A) caused by influence of the ion microfield and also the influence of the ion dynamic effect (D) to the line shape. Our A and D parameters represent the first data obtained experimentally by the use of the line profile deconvolution procedure. We have found stronger influence of the ion contribution to these He I line profiles than the semiclassical theoretical approximation provides. This can be important for some astrophysical plasma modelling or for diagnostics.  相似文献

We present Cassini data revealing that protons between a few keV and about 100 keV energy are not stably trapped in Saturn's inner magnetosphere. Instead these ions are present only for relatively short times following injections. Injected protons are lost principally because the neutral gas cloud converts these particles to energetic neutral atoms via charge exchange. At higher energies, in the MeV to GeV range, protons are stably trapped between the orbits of the principal moons because the proton cross-section for charge exchange is very small at such energies. These protons likely result from cosmic ray albedo neutron decay (CRAND) and are lost principally to interactions with satellite surfaces and ring particles during magnetospheric radial diffusion. A main result of this work is to show that the dominant energetic proton loss and source processes are a function of proton energy. Surface sputtering by keV ions is revisited based on the reduced ion intensities observed. Relatively speaking, MeV ion and electron weathering is most important closer to Saturn, e.g. at Janus and Mimas, whereas keV ion weathering is most important farther out, at Dione and Rhea.  相似文献

On 14 July 1974 the Atmosphere Explorer-C satellite flew through an aurora at F-region altitudes just after local midnight. The effects of the particle influx are clearly evident in the ion densities, the 6300 Å airglow, and the electron and ion temperatures. This event provided an opportunity to study the agreement between the observed ion densities and those calculated from photochemical theory using in situ measurements of such atmospheric parameters as the neutral densities and the differential electron energy spectra obtained along the satellite track. Good agreement is obtained for the ions O2+, NO+ and N2+ using photochemical theory and measured rate constants and electron impact cross sections. Atomic nitrogen densities are calculated from the observed [NO+]/[O2+] ratio. In the region of most intense electron fluxes (20 erg cm−2 sec−1) at 280 km, the N density is found to be between 2 and 7 × 107 cm−3. The resulting N densities are found to account for approx. 60% of the production of N+ through electron impact on N and the resonant charge exchange of O+(2P) with N(4S). This reaction also provides a significant source of O(1S) in the aurora at F-region altitudes. In the region of intense fast electron influx, the reaction with atomic nitrogen is found to be the main loss of O+(2P).  相似文献

Previous studies of the residual masses resulting from ablation of small meteoroid grains have been concerned with the ablation of particles which enter the atmosphere independently. There is widespread evidence that fragmentation is a common occurrence for meteors ranging from bright fireballs to the smallest meteors recorded with optical techniques. According to a widely accepted model, meteoroids can be considered to be a collection of tiny grains, with these grains being detached from the meteoroid during atmospheric flight. This investigation numerically solves the differential equations governing ablation of grains detached at different heights. Initial velocities from 12 to 70km s−1, and initial masses from 10−5 to 10−13kg, are considered. The ablation equations allow for thermal heating prior to the onset of intensive evaporation, and thermal reradiation throughout. The atmospheric density profile used is one based on the U.S. Standard Atmosphere (1962, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington). Calculations were completed for grains detached at 120, 100, 95, 90, 85, 80 and 75km height. For the purposes of the ablation model it is assumed that grains are ejected with an initial temperature of 1300 K, and that intensive grain evaporation begins at 2100 K. These values are consistent with grains emitted according to the model of Hawkes and Jones (1975a, Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc. 173, 339; Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc. 185, 727). For comparison purposes, calculations were also completed for grains entering the atmosphere independently (initial height 140km and beginning temperature 280 K assumed).

It is found that particles ejected at heights of 100km and above behave essentially as independent particles incident from infinity. Hence the results of earlier studies (e.g. Nicol et al., 1985, Planet. Space Sci.33, 315) can be applied. For ejection at lower heights the resultant residual mass is somewhat less than that corresponding to grains of the same initial mass and velocity. The difference is greatest for high velocity, low mass meteors. For initial masses near 10−5kg, residual mass is almost independent of ejection height, at least down to an ejection height of 75km. The significant finding of Nicol et al. (1985, Planet. Space Sci.33, 315) that residual mass is almost independent of initial mass for a fairly wide range of initial masses is only loosely followed when in-flight ejection of particles at heights below about 95 km is considered.

Typical calculations are presented to show that in-flight fragmentation of dustballs can be an important source of macroscopic ablation product micrometeorites. The astronomical and atmospheric implications of this finding are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Ejecta from Saturn's moon Hyperion are subject to powerful perturbations from nearby Titan, which control their ultimate fate. We have performed numerical integrations to simulate a simplified system consisting of Saturn (including optical flattening as well as dynamical oblateness), its main ring system (treated as a massless flat annulus), the moons Tethys, Dione, Titan, Hyperion, and Iapetus, and the Sun (treated simply as a massive satellite). At several different points in Hyperion's orbit, 1050 massless particles, more or less evenly distributed over latitude and longitude, were ejected radially outward from 1 km above Hyperion's mean radius at speeds 10% faster than escape speed from Hyperion. Most of these particles were removed within the first few thousand years, but ∼3% of them survived the entire 100,000-year duration of the simulations. Ejecta from Hyperion are much more widely scattered than previously thought, and can cross the orbits of all of Saturn's satellites. About 9% of all the particles escaped from the saturnian system, but Titan accreted ∼78% of the total, while Hyperion reaccreted only ∼5%. This low efficiency of reaccretion may help to account for Hyperion's small size and rugged shape. Only ∼1% of all the particles hit other satellites, and another ∼1% impacted Saturn itself, while ∼3% of them struck its main rings. The high proportion of impacts into Saturn's rings is surprising; these collisions show a broad decline in impact speed with time, suggesting that Hyperion ejecta gradually spread inwards. Additional simulations were used to investigate the dependence of ejecta evolution on launch speed, the mass of Hyperion, and the presence of the Sun. In general, the wide distribution of ejecta from Hyperion suggests that it does contribute to “Population II” craters on the inner satellites of Saturn. Ejecta which escape from a satellite into temporary orbit about its planet, but later reimpact into the same moon or another one produce “poltorary” impacts, intermediate in character between primary and secondary impacts. It may be possible to distinguish poltorary craters from primary and secondary craters on the basis of morphology.  相似文献

It is rather difficult to understand theoretically and to analyse the experimental data concerning the mass and shape distributions of fragments created by catastrophic collisions. The fragmentation process is discussed as being a purely stochastical phenomenon; the size and shape distributions obtained in this way are compared with the results of laboratory experiments. The results are presented of some computer simulations of random volume fragmentation processes; they are a 3-D generalization of the numerical experiments described in Grady and Kipp (J. Appl. Phys. 58(3), 1210–1222, 1985). The features of the size distribution are discussed, comparing it with the expectations of the Mott-Linfoot and Grady-Kipp theories. In the literature the shape of fragments is defined in terms of the ratios B/A and C/A, where A, B, C are defined as the sizes of a fragment along three orthogonal axes. The definition of the shape of a fragment cannot be considered unique, since it is not obvious in which order to define the three axes when the fragments are not ellipsoidal. A few possible methods are introduced explicity, and the resulting differences are discussed. In this light, the shape results (the mean values and the distribution of the axial ratios) obtained in recent laboratory experiments are rediscussed and critically reviewed. For what concerns the stochastical modelling, the results of various simulations, corresponding to different assumptions regarding fragmentation properties are presented. It is shown that the main features of the shape distributions from laboratory experiments cannot be satisfactorily reproduced. Comparison of the results with the outcomes of the semiempirical fragmentation model by Paolicchi et al. (Icarus 121, 126–157, 1996), as well as with some results coming out from hydrodynamical simulations, shows how only a “global” and physical model, not a purely statistical one (neither global nor “local”), can afford to reproduce the observed data.  相似文献

The faint E ring of Saturn appears as a narrow ring 246,000 ± 4,000 km from the center of Saturn on photographs taken when the ring-plane inclination was 5°.4. The apparent brightness of the ring was uniform at all observed orbital longitudes and permits an estimate of the normal optical thickness. A faint satellite (1981S1) was observed near the L4 triangular libration point of Tethys and is probably the same object as 1980S13.  相似文献

Grains, an abundant constituent of the former solar system, will have had a high probability of being driven into orbits resonant with major bodies already formed. This arises because of the presence of gas drag and Poynting-Robertson drag on small grains, providing the dissipation necessary to concentrate matter into special orbits. Since the mean density in resonant orbits can be built up by such a process without limit, these may become the favored orbits for gravitational contraction to gather material into major bodies. Satellite formation processes may therefore depend upon the buildup of resonant lanes of dust grains around the parent body. Saturn's rings are possibly one example of such lanes, though an unsuitable one for the final step of satellite formation on account of their being too close to Saturn.  相似文献
