This study was designed to combine surface complexation modelling of macroscopic adsorption data with X-ray Absorption Spectroscopic (XAS) measurements to identify lanthanide sorption sites on the bacterial surface. The adsorption of selected representatives for light (La and Nd), middle (Sm and Gd) and heavy (Er and Yb) lanthanides was measured as a function of pH, and biomass samples exposed to 4 mg/L lanthanide at pH 3.5 and 6 were analysed using XAS. Surface complexation modelling was consistent with the light lanthanides adsorbing to phosphate sites, whereas the adsorption of middle and heavy lanthanides could be modelled equally well by carboxyl and phosphate sites. The existence of such mixed mode coordination was confirmed by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) analysis, which was also consistent with adsorption to phosphate sites at low pH, with secondary involvement of carboxyl sites at high adsorption density (high pH). Thus, the two approaches yield broadly consistent information with regard to surface site identity and lanthanide coordination environment. Furthermore, spectroscopic analysis suggests that coordination to phosphate sites is monodentate at the metal/biomass ratios used. Based on the best-fitting pKa site, we infer that the phosphate sites are located on N-acetylglucosamine phosphate, the most likely polymer on gram-negative cells with potential phosphate sites that deprotonate around neutral pH.  相似文献

In this study, the speciation of Zn2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ ions sorbed at the calcite surface was monitored during a 2.5-year reaction period, using extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy to characterize metal speciation on the molecular scale. Experiments were performed using pre-equilibrated calcite-water suspensions of pH 8.3, at metal concentrations below the solubility of metal hydroxide and carbonate precipitates, and at constant metal surface loadings. The EXAFS results indicate that all three metals remained coordinated at the calcite surface as inner-sphere adsorption complexes during the 2.5-year ageing period, with no evidence to suggest slow formation of dilute metal-calcite solid solutions under the reaction conditions employed. All three divalent metals were found to form non-octahedral complexes upon coordination to the calcite surface, with Zn2+ adsorbing as a tetrahedral complex, Cu2+ as a Jahn-Teller distorted octahedral complex, and Pb2+ coordinating as a trigonal- or square-pyramidal surface complex. The non-octahedral configurations of these surface complexes may have hindered metal transfer from the calcite surface into the bulk, where Ca2+ is in octahedral coordination with respect to first-shell O. The use of pre-equilibrated calcite suspensions, with no net calcite dissolution or precipitation, likely prevented metal incorporation into the lattice as a result of surface recrystallization. The results from this study imply that ageing alone does not increase the stability of Zn2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ partitioning to calcite if equilibrium with the solution is maintained during reaction; under these conditions, these metals are likely to remain available for exchange even after extended sorption times.  相似文献

Experiments of Zn2+ and Fe3+ coprecipitation as a function of pH were conducted in the laboratory at ambient temperature and pressure. X-ray diffraction patterns of the coprecipitates show two broad peaks at 0.149 and 0.258 nm, which is consistent with published patterns for pure 2-line ferrihydrite. Zn2+ uptake occurred at pH ≥5 while Fe3+ precipitation occurred between pH 3 and 4, although both Zn2+ and Fe3+ were present in the same solution during the entire range of pH titration. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the coprecipitates are 2 to 6 nm sized single crystalline particles but aggregated to 50 to 400 nm sized clusters. Analytical electron microscopy indicated that the 5% atomic Zn with respect to Fe was homogeneously distributed. No segregated phases were found in the clusters or at single crystal edges, which is consistent with published extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) results at similar Zn/(Zn + Fe) ratios. Hence, occlusion and surface precipitation may be excluded as possible coprecipitation mechanisms. The bulk solution Zn2+ sorption edge was fitted to both solid solution and generalized diffuse layer surface complexation models. However, a solid solution model is inconsistent with published EXAFS results that show tetrahedral polydentate Zn2+ complexes sharing apices with Fe3+octahedra.  相似文献

The adsorption of aqueous Hg2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ complexes on a variety of sulphide minerals has been studied as a function of the solution pH and also as a function of the nature of the ligands in solution. Sulphide minerals are excellent scavengers for these heavy metals. The adsorption is strongly pH dependent, i.e. there is a critical pH at which the adsorption increases dramatically. The pH dependence is related to the hydrolysis of the metal ions. Indirect evidence suggests that the hydrolyzed species are adsorbed directly on the sulphide groups, probably as a monolayer. The results also suggest the presence of MCIn2−n species physisorbed on the adsorbed monolayer. A positive identification of the adsorbed species was not possible using ESCA/XPS.  相似文献

An X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study of the Fe local environment in natural amethyst (a variety of α-quartz, SiO2) has been carried out. Room temperature measurements were performed at the Fe K-edge (7,112 eV), at both the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) regions. Experimental results were then compared with DFT calculations. XANES experimental spectra suggest Fe to occur mainly in the trivalent state, although a fraction of Fe2+ is identified. EXAFS spectra, on the other hand, reveal an unusual short distance for the first coordination shell:  = 1.78(2) Å, the coordination number being 2.7(5). These results allow to establish that Fe replaces Si in its tetrahedral site, and that numerous local distortions are occurring as a consequence of the presence of Fe3+ variably compensated by protons and/or alkaline ions, or uncompensated. The formal valence of Fe, on the basis of both experimental and DFT structural features, can be either 4+ or 3+. Taking into account the XANES evidences, we suggest that Fe mainly occurs in the trivalent state, compensated by protons, and that a minor fraction of Fe4+ is stabilised by the favourable local structural arrangement.  相似文献

Lead coprecipitation with iron oxyhydroxide nano-particles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pb2+ and Fe3+ coprecipitation was studied with sorption edge measurements, desorption experiments, sorbent aging, High Resolution Transmission and Analytical Electron Microscopy (HR TEM-AEM), and geochemical modeling. Companion adsorption experiments were also conducted for comparison. The macroscopic chemical and near atomic scale HRTEM data supplemented our molecule scale analysis with EXAFS (Kelly et al., 2008). Coprecipitation of Pb2+ with ferric oxyhydroxides occurred at ∼pH 4 and is more efficient than adsorption in removing Pb2+ from aqueous solutions at similar sorbate/sorbent ratios and pH. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) shows peaks of lepidocrocite and two additional broad peaks similar to fine particles of 2-line ferrihydrite (2LFh). HRTEM of the Pb-Fe coprecipitates shows a mixture of 2-6 nm diameter spheres and 8-20 by 200-300 nm needles, both uniformly distributed with Pb2+. Geochemical modeling shows that surface complexation models fit the experimental data of low Pb:Fe ratios when a high site density is used. Desorption experiments show that more Pb2+ was released from loaded sorbents collected from adsorption experiments than from Pb to Fe coprecipitates at dilute EDTA concentrations. Desorbed Pb2+ versus dissolved Fe3+ data show a linear relationship for coprecipitation (CPT) desorption experiments but a parabolic relationship for adsorption (ADS) experiments.Based on these results, we hypothesize that Pb2+ was first adsorbed onto the nanometer-sized, metastable, iron oxyhydroxide polymers of 2LFh with domain size of 2-3 nm. As these nano-particles assembled into larger particles, some Pb2+ was trapped in the iron oxyhydroxide structure and re-arranged to form solid solutions. Therefore, the CPT contact method produced more efficient removal of Pb2+ than the adsorption contact method, and Pb2+ bound in CPT solids represent a more stable sequestration of Pb2+ in the environment than Pb2+ adsorbed on iron oxyhydroxide surfaces.  相似文献

The mineralogy of natural ferromanganese coatings on quartz grains and the crystal chemistry of associated trace elements Ni, Zn, Ba, and As were characterized by X-ray microfluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and EXAFS spectroscopy. Fe is speciated as ferrihydrite and Mn as vernadite. The two oxides form alternating Fe- and Mn-rich layers that are irregularly distributed and not always continuous. Unlike naturally abundant Fe-vernadite, in which Fe and Mn are mixed at the nanoscale, the ferrihydrite and vernadite are physically segregated and the trace elements clearly partitioned at the microscopic scale. Vernadite consists of two populations of interstratified one-water layer (7 Å phyllomanganate) and two-water layer (10 Å phyllomanganate) crystallites. In one population, 7 Å layers dominate, and in the other 10 Å layers dominate. The three trace metals Ni, Zn, and Ba are associated with vernadite and the metalloid As with ferrihydrite. In vernadite, nickel is both substituted isomorphically for Mn in the manganese layer and sorbed at vacant Mn layer sites in the interlayer. The partitioning of Ni is pH-dependent, with a strong preference for the first site at circumneutral pH and for the second at acidic pH. Thus, the site occupancy of Ni in vernadite may be an indicator of marine vs. continental origin, and in the latter, of the acidity of streams, lakes, or soil pore waters in which the vernadite formed. Zinc is sorbed only in the interlayer at vacant Mn layer sites. It is fully tetrahedral at a Zn/Mn molar ratio of 0.0138, and partly octahedral at a Zn/Mn ratio of 0.1036 consistent with experimental studies showing that the VIZn/IVZn ratio increases with Zn loading. Barium is sorbed in a slightly offset position above empty tetrahedral cavities in the interlayer. Arsenic tetrahedra are retained at the ferrihydrite surface by a bidentate-binuclear attachment to two adjacent iron octahedra, as commonly observed. Trace elements in ferromanganese precipitates are partitioned at a few, well-defined, crystallographic sites that have some elemental specificity, and thus selectivity. The relative diversity of sorption sites contrasts with the simplicity of the layer structure of vernadite, in which charge deficit arises only from Mn4+ vacancies (i.e., no Mn3+ for Mn4+ substitution). Therefore, sorption mechanisms primarily depend on physical and chemical properties of the sorbate and competition with other ions in solution, such as protons at low pH for Ni sorption.  相似文献

Homogenized samples of raw clays resulting from two (2) different lots of natural clays from Maghnia (Algeria) have been assessed for their potential use in the removal of Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions from industrial liquid wastes (LW). Raw and acid-activated samples have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and used as adsorbents for the removal of Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions from aqueous system using adsorption method under different conditions. The effect of factors including contact time, pH, and dosage on the adsorption properties of Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions onto clays was investigated at 25 °C. The obtained results revealed that the removal percentages of Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions, from both aqueous solution (AS) and LW, were varying between 90 and 98% for 40 min and optimal pH values ranged from 5 to 6 for Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions, respectively. The kinetics of both Pb2+ and Zn2+ ion adsorption fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin adsorption isotherms were used, and their constants were evaluated. The values of thermodynamic parameters, ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG° indicated that the adsorption of Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions was spontaneous and exothermic process in nature. The adsorption and desorption isotherms indicated that Pb2+ and Zn2+ adsorption to raw clays was reversible. The experimental results obtained showed that the raw clays from Maghnia (Algeria) had a great potential for removing Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions from industrial liquid wastes using adsorption method.  相似文献

X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements was used at the U L3-edge to directly determine the pH dependence of the cell wall functional groups responsible for the absorption of aqueous UO22+ to Bacillus subtilis from pH 1.67 to 4.80. Surface complexation modeling can be used to predict metal distributions in water-rock systems, and it has been used to quantify bacterial adsorption of metal cations. However, successful application of these models requires a detailed knowledge not only of the type of bacterial surface site involved in metal adsorption/desorption, but also of the binding geometry. Previous acid-base titrations of B. subtilis cells suggested that three surface functional group types are important on the cell wall; these groups have been postulated to correspond to carboxyl, phosphoryl, and hydroxyl sites. When the U(VI) adsorption to B. subtilis is measured, observed is a significant pH-independent absorption at low pH values (<3.0), ascribed to an interaction between the uranyl cation and a neutrally charged phosphoryl group on the cell wall. The present study provides independent quantitative constraints on the types of sites involved in uranyl binding to B. subtilis from pH 1.67 to 4.80. The XAFS results indicate that at extremely low pH (pH 1.67) UO22+ binds exclusively to phosphoryl functional groups on the cell wall, with an average distance between the U atom and the P atom of 3.64 ± 0.01 Å. This U-P distance indicates an inner-sphere complex with an oxygen atom shared between the UO22+ and the phosphoryl ligand. The P signal at extremely low pH value is consistent with the UO22+ binding to a protonated phosphoryl group, as previously ascribed. With increasing pH (3.22 and 4.80), UO22+ binds increasingly to bacterial surface carboxyl functional groups, with an average distance between the U atom and the C atom of 2.89 ± 0.02 Å. This U-C distance indicates an inner-sphere complex with two oxygen atoms shared between the UO22+ and the carboxyl ligand. The results of this XAFS study confirm the uranyl-bacterial surface speciation model.  相似文献

Mössbauer spectra of glasses of NaFeSi3O8 and 3NaAlSi2O6 · NaFeSiO4 starting compositions consist of a dominant Fe3+ and subordinate Fe2+ quadrupole-split doublet, in agreement with previous work. Fe3+ is assigned to tetrahedral coordination. Pressure-induced coordination changes are not observed in the pressure range 1 bar to 30 kbar. A gradual increase in isomer shift of the Fe3+ doublet with increase in pressure is attributed to steric effects. Raman spectra of GeO2, NaGaSi3O8 and NaGaSiO4 glasses are dominated by network structure vibrations. There is no detectable change in the nearest-neighbor coordination of Ge4+ in GeO2 from 1 bar to 14 kbar, of Ga3+ in NaGaSi3O8 from 1 bar to 28 kbar and of Ga3+ in NaGaSiO4 from 1 bar to 25 kbar. However, some structural reorganization outside of the first coordination sphere occurs in the high pressure glasses.XANES and EXAFS spectra on powdered samples of 1 bar and 25 kbar NaGaSiO4 glasses and crystalline NaGaSiO4 were obtained from K edge absorption spectra at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory using a double crystal monochromator equipped with Si(220) crystals. The XANES spectra indicate that Ga3+ has a similar extended coordination geometry in both glasses. The EXAFS spectra reveal that Ga3+ is four-coordinated with oxygen in all three samples with a Ga3+-O distance of about 1.83 Å. The radial distribution functions of the two glasses are virtually identical. However, both XANES and EXAFS spectra indicate significant structural differences between crystalline NaGaSiO4 (nepheline-type structure) and vitreous NaGaSiO4 beyond the first coordination shell of Ga3+. Thus, X-ray absorption spectroscopy independently confirms the Raman results on the unchanged coordination of Ga3+ in NaGaSiO4 glasses with pressures up to 25 kbar.Glass compositions were selected in anticipation that larger and/or lower charged cations would exhibit pressure-induced coordination changes at lower pressures than Al3+ and Si4+. The present null result suggests that the stabilizing features of open network structures in the liquid state (large entropy and minimized cation-cation repulsion) more than compensate for large molar volume in the pressure range accessible to experimentation. It appears that network structures in natural magmas should remain stable throughout the upper mantle. Consequently, the densities of magmas at high pressures which are calculated from compressibility data and the appropriate equation of state will be only slightly underestimated, due to the effect of minor structural changes beyond the first coordination sphere.  相似文献

Nile Rose Plant was used to study adsorption of several cations (Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+) from wastewater within various experimental conditions. The dried leaves of Nile Rose Plant were used at different adsorbent/ metal ion ratios. The influence of pH, contact time, metal concentration, and adsorbent loading weight on the removal process was investigated. Batch adsorption studies were carried out at room temperature. The adsorption efficiencies were found to be pH dependent, increasing by increasing the pH in the range from 2.5 to 8.5 exept for Pb. The equilibrium time was attained within 60 to 90 min. and the maximum removal percentage was achieved at an adsorbent loading weight of 1.5 g/50 mL mixed ions solution. Isothermal studies showed that the data were best fitted to the Temkin isotherm model. The removal order was found to be Pb2+> Zn2+> Cu2+> Cd2+. The surface IR-characterization of Nile rose plant showed the presence of many functional groups capable of binding to the metal cations.  相似文献

We investigated the structure of uranyl sorption complexes on gibbsite (pH 5.6-9.7) by two independent methods, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy at the U-LIII edge. To model the gibbsite surface with DFT, we tested two Al (hydr)oxide clusters, a dimer and a hexamer. Based on polarization, structure, and relaxation energies during geometry optimization, the hexamer cluster was found to be the more appropriate model. An additional advantage of the hexamer model is that it represents both edges and basal faces of gibbsite. The DFT calculations of (monomeric) uranyl sorption complexes show an energetic preference for the corner-sharing versus the edge-sharing configuration on gibbsite edges. The energy difference is so small, however, that possibly both surface species may coexist. In contrast to the edge sites, sorption to basal sites was energetically not favorable. EXAFS spectroscopy revealed in all investigated samples the same interatomic distances of the uranyl coordination environment (RU-Oax ≈ 1.80 Å, RU-Oeq ≈ 2.40 Å), and towards the gibbsite surface (RU-O ≈ 2.87 Å, RU-Al ≈ 3.38 Å). In addition, two U-U distances were observed, 3.92 Å at pH 9.7 and 4.30 Å at pH 5.6, both with coordination numbers of ∼1. The short U-U distance is close to that of the aqueous uranyl hydroxo dimer, UO2(OH)2, reported as 3.875 Å in the literature, but significantly longer than that of aqueous trimers (3.81-3.82 Å), suggesting sorption of uranyl dimers at alkaline pH. The longer U-U distance (4.30 Å) at acidic pH, however, is not in line with known aqueous uranyl polymer complexes. Based on the EXAFS findings we further refined dimeric surface complexes with DFT. We propose two structural models: in the acidic region, the observed long U-U distance can be explained with a distortion of the uranyl dimer to form both a corner-sharing and an edge-sharing linkage to neighboring Al octahedra, leading to RU-U = 4.150 Å. In the alkaline region, a corner-sharing uranyl dimer complex is the most favorable. The U-O path at ∼2.87 Å in the EXAFS spectra arises from the oxygen atom linking two Al cations in corner-sharing arrangement. The adsorption structures obtained by DFT calculations are in good agreement with the structural parameters from EXAFS analysis: U-Al (3.394 Å), U-U (3.949 Å), and U-O (2.823 Å) for the alkaline pH model, and U-Al (3.279 Å), U-U (4.150 Å), and U-O (2.743 Å) for the acidic pH model. This work shows that by combining EXAFS and DFT, consistent structural models for uranyl sorption complexes can be obtained, which are relevant to predict the migration behavior of uranium at nuclear facilities.  相似文献

The structural environments of Mn2+ and Sr2+ at concentrations of 0.2–0.8 wt% in dry and hydrous silicate glasses have been studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES). The environment of Mn in hydrous silica glasses containing 4.5 and 6.0 wt% H2O appears to be close to an undistorted octahedral site, whereas Mn in other compositions, both dry and hydrous, occupies either a distribution of octahedral and tetrahedral sites, or distorted, non-centrosymmetric sites. The fraction of non-centrosymmetric sites (including tetrahedral) or the average degree of distortion of the sites decreases with both increasing dissolved water concentration and number of non-bridging oxygens in the glass. For Sr the changes as a function of polymerisation and water concentration are less clear, but it appears that the average Sr-O distances are shorter than in crystalline silicates and decrease further with decreasing polymerisation. The structural data obtained in this study are not readily integrated with previous partitioning data for Mn, suggesting that changes in the first-shell coordination geometry of Mn do not play a direct role in controlling the melt compositional dependence of trace element partition coefficients. It is tentatively suggested that distortions of the framework resulting from the incorporation of Mn (i.e. a second shell effect) control the partitioning behaviour.  相似文献

X-ray absorption spectroscopy, including extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) techniques, have been used to determine the structure and speciation of complexes for Fe2+ and Fe3+ chloride solutions at a variety of pH's, ionic strengths, and chloride/iron ratios.Low intensity K-edge transition features and analysis of modified pair correlation functions, derived from Fourier transformation of EXAFS spectra, show a regular octahedral coordination of Fe(II) by water molecules with a first-shell Fe2+-O bond distance, closely matching octahedral Fe2+-O bonds obtained from solid oxide model compounds. Solution Fe2+-O bond distances decrease with chloride/iron ratio, pH, and total FeCl2 concentration. A slight intensification of the 1s → 3d transition with increasing FeCl2 concentration suggests that chloride may begin to mix with water as a nearest-neighbor octahedral ligand. Fe3+ solutions show a pronounced increase in the 1s → 3d transition intensities between 1.0 M FeCl3/7.8 M Cl? to 1.0 M FeCl3/ 15 M Cl?, indicating a coordination change from octahedral to tetrahedral complexes. EXAFS analyses of these solutions show an increase in first-shell Fe3+-ligand distances despite this apparent reduction in coordination number. This can be best explained by a change from regular octahedral complexes of ferric iron (either Fe(H2O)63+ or trans-Fe(H2O)4Cl2 or both; Fe3+-O bond distances of 2.10 Å) to tetra-chloro complexes [Fe3+-Cl bond distances of 2.25 Å].  相似文献

The types and structures of adsorption complexes formed by oxalate at boehmite (γ-AlOOH)/water and corundum (α-Al2O3)/water interfaces were determined using in situ attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and quantum chemical simulation methods. At pH 5.1, at least four different oxalate species were found at or near the boehmite/water interface for oxalate surface coverages (Γox) ranging from 0.25 to 16.44 μmol/m2. At relatively low coverages (Γox < 2.47), strongly adsorbed inner-sphere oxalate species (IR peaks at 1286, 1418, 1700, and 1720 cm−1) replace weakly adsorbed carbonate species, and a small proportion of oxalate anions are adsorbed in an outer-sphere mode (IR peaks at 1314 and 1591 cm−1). IR peaks indicative of inner-sphere adsorbed oxalate are also observed for oxalate at the corundum/water interface at Γox = 1.4 μmol/m2. With increasing oxalate concentration (Γox > 2.47 μmol/m2), the boehmite surface binding sites for inner-sphere adsorbed oxalate become saturated, and excess oxalate ions are present dominantly as aqueous species (IR peaks at 1309 and 1571 cm−1). In addition to these adsorption processes, oxalate-promoted dissolution of boehmite following inner-sphere oxalate adsorption becomes increasingly pronounced with increasing Γox and results in an aqueous Al(III)-oxalate species, as indicated by shifted IR peaks (1286 → 1297 cm−1 and 1418 → 1408 cm−1). At pH 2.5, no outer-sphere adsorbed oxalate or aqueous oxalate species were observed. The similarity of adsorbed oxalate spectral features at pH 2.5 and 5.1 implies that the adsorption mechanism of aqueous HOx species involves loss of protons from this species during the ligand-exchange reaction. As a consequence, adsorbed inner-sphere oxalate and aqueous Al(III)-oxalate complexes formed at pH 2.5 have coordination geometries very similar to those formed at pH 5.1.The coordination geometry of inner-sphere adsorbed oxalate species was also predicted using quantum chemical geometry optimization and IR vibrational frequency calculations. Geometry-optimized Al8O12 and Al14O22 clusters with the reactive surface Al site coordinated by three oxygens were used as model substrates for corundum and boehmite surfaces. Among the models considered, calculated IR frequencies based on a bidentate side-on structure with a 5-membered ring agree best with the observed frequencies for boehmite/oxalate/water samples at Γox = 0.25 to 16.44 μmol/m2 and pH 2.5 and 5.1, and for a corundum/oxalate/water sample at Γox = 1.4 μmol/m2 and pH 5.1. Based on these results, we suggest that oxalate bonding on boehmite and corundum surfaces results in 5-coordinated rather than 4- or 6-coordinated Al surface sites.  相似文献

The problem associated with multi-metals contaminated soils has generated increasingly more attention. Thus, it is necessary within the field to study the mutual influence of environmental factors on competitive adsorption. The majority of studies carried out to date have concentrated on the variation of adsorption capacity or the removal efficiency, with only a single factor changed (including pH, ionic strength, and metal concentration). However, the interaction effect among various environmental factors was ignored in these studies. The purpose of this study was mainly aimed toward the investigation of the interaction of two influential factors, as well as the influential degree of each factor (such as the initial pH, ionic strength, initial metal concentration, and the competitive metal concentration) on competitive adsorption using the response surface method. These results demonstrated that the influential degree of each factor studied on the competitive adsorption of Zn2+ and Cd2+ followed the trend of having the initial concentration of the target metal?>?initial pH?>?concentration of competitive metal?>?ionic strength. When the metal concentration was held constant, we found that the competitive adsorption of Zn2+ initially increased, followed by a decrease with increasing initial pH. However, this was found to change minimally with increasing ionic strength. When the initial pH or ionic strength was held constant, the competitive ability was observed to increase with increasing Zn2+ concentration. However, with increasing Zn2+ or Cd2+ concentrations, the variation degree of the competitive adsorption was found to become smaller. These results provide novel information toward a better understanding of the effect of multifactors on the competitive adsorption of Zn2+ and Cd2+.  相似文献

The abandoned Sb deposit Pezinok in Slovakia is a significant source of As and Sb pollution that can be traced in the upper horizons of soils kilometers downstream. The source of the metalloids are two tailing impoundments which hold ∼380,000 m3 of mining waste. The tailings and the discharged water have circumneutral pH values (7.0 ± 0.6) because the acidity generated by the decomposition of the primary sulfides (pyrite, FeS2; arsenopyrite, FeAsS; berthierite, FeSb2S4) is rapidly neutralized by the abundant carbonates. The weathering rims on the primary sulfides are iron oxides which act as very efficient scavengers of As and Sb (with up to 19.2 wt% As and 23.7 wt% Sb). In-situ μ-XANES experiments indicate that As in the weathering rims is fully oxidized (As5+). The pore solutions in the impoundment body contain up to 81 ppm As and 2.5 ppm Sb. Once these solutions are discharged from the impoundments, they precipitate or deposit masses of As-rich hydrous ferric oxide (As-HFO) with up to 28.3 wt% As2O5 and 2.7 wt% Sb. All As-HFO samples are amorphous to X-rays. They contain Fe and As in their highest oxidation state and in octahedral and tetrahedral coordination, respectively, as suggested by XANES and EXAFS studies on Fe K and As K edges. The iron octahedra in the As-HFO share edges to form short single chains and the chains polymerize by sharing edges or corners with the adjacent units. The arsenate ions attach to the chains in a bidentate-binuclear and monodentate fashion. In addition, hydrogen-bonded complexes may exist to satisfy the bonding requirements of all oxygen atoms in the first coordination sphere of As5+. Structural changes in the As-HFO samples were traced by chemical analyses and Fe EXAFS spectroscopy during an ageing experiment. As the samples age, As becomes more easily leachable. EXAFS spectra show a discernible trend of increasing number of Fe-Fe pairs at a distance of 3.3-3.5 Å, that is, increasing polymerization of the iron octahedra to form larger units with fewer adsorption sites. Therefore, although ferrihydrite is an excellent material for capturing arsenic, its use as a medium for a long-term storage of As has to be considered with a great caution because it will tend to release arsenic as it ages.  相似文献

“Two-line” ferrihydrite samples precipitated and then exposed to a range of aqueous Zn solutions (10−5 to 10−3 M), and also coprecipitated in similar Zn solutions (pH 6.5), have been examined by Zn and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Typical Zn complexes on the surface have Zn-O distances of 1.97(.02) Å and coordination numbers of about 4.0(0.5), consistent with tetrahedral oxygen coordination. This contrasts with Zn-O distances of 2.11(.02) Å and coordination numbers of 6 to 7 in the aqueous Zn solutions used in sample preparation. X-ray absorption extended fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) fits to the second shell of cation neighbors indicate as many as 4 Zn-Fe neighbors at 3.44(.04) Å in coprecipitated samples, and about two Zn-Fe neighbors at the same distance in adsorption samples. In both sets of samples, the fitted coordination number of second shell cations decreases as sorption density increases, indicating changes in the number and type of available complexing sites or the onset of competitive precipitation processes. Comparison of our results with the possible geometries for surface complexes and precipitates suggests that the Zn sorption complexes are inner sphere and at lowest adsorption densities are bidentate, sharing apical oxygens with adjacent edge-sharing Fe(O,OH)6 octahedra. Coprecipitation samples have complexes with similar geometry, but these are polydentate, sharing apices with more than two adjacent edge-sharing Fe(O,OH)6 polyhedra. The results are inconsistent with Zn entering the ferrihydrite structure (i.e., solid solution formation) or formation of other Zn-Fe precipitates. The fitted Zn-Fe coordination numbers drop with increasing Zn density with a minimum of about 0.8(.2) at Zn/(Zn + Fe) of 0.08 or more. This change appears to be attributable to the onset of precipitation of zinc hydroxide polymers with mainly tetrahedral Zn coordination. At the highest loadings studied, the nature of the complexes changes further, and a second type of precipitate forms. This has a structure based on a brucite layer topology, with mainly octahedral Zn coordination. Amorphous zinc hydroxide samples prepared for comparison had a closely similar local structure. Analysis of the Fe K-edge EXAFS is consistent with surface complexation reactions and surface precipitation at high Zn loadings with little or no Fe-Zn solid solution formation. The formation of Zn-containing precipitates at solution conditions two or more orders of magnitude below their solubility limit is compared with other sorption and spectroscopic studies that describe similar behavior.  相似文献

L III edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of Gd, Er and Lu environments in synthetic epidotes of composition CaLa0.9 X 0.1Al2MgSi3O13H (X=Gd or Er or Lu) were recorded using synchrotron radiation. The Fourier transforms of the Gd-, Er- and Lu-EXAFS are clearly different from one another indicating wholly or partially different site occupancy. Model fitting of the Fourier-filtered partial EXAFS and comparison of pair distribution functions with those calculated for natural epidote leads to the conclusion that three different sites are probably involved in the accommodation of these elements in the epidote structure, and that site preference is a function of the rare earth ionic size. Gd is located in A2-type sites, whereas the local atomic environment of Er is consistent with A1 site occupancy and the Lu environment has been modelled on an M3-type octahedral site.  相似文献

As-bearing travertine rocks from Tuscany (Italy), where previous studies suggested the existence of a CO32− ⇔ AsO33− substitution in the calcite lattice, were investigated with X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) at the As K-edge (11,867 eV). In two of the studied samples, XANES indicates that As is in the 5+ oxidation state only, and EXAFS analysis reveals a local environment typical of arsenate species. For these samples, the lack of detectable second shell signals suggests a poorly ordered environment, possibly corresponding to an adsorption onto oxide and/or silicate phases. On the other hand, in the third sample XANES reveals a mixed As oxidation state (III and V). This sample also presents evident next nearest neighbor coordination shells, attributed to As-Ca and As-As contributions. The occurrence of next neighbor shells is evidence that part of As is incorporated in an ordered lattice. Furthermore, the local structure revealed by EXAFS is compatible with As incorporation in the calcite phase, as further supported by DFT simulations. The observation of next neighbors shells only in the As(III)-rich sample suggests the substitution of the arsenite group in place of the carbonate one (CO32− ⇔ AsO33−). The conclusion of this work is that uptake of As by calcite is in general less favored than adsorption onto iron oxhydroxides, but could become environmentally important wherever the latter phenomenon is hindered.  相似文献
