Ammonium fixed in micas of metamorphic rocks is a sensitive indicator both of organic-inorganic interactions during diagenesis as well as of the devolatilization history and fluid/rock interaction during metamorphism. In this study, a collection of geochemically well-characterized biotite separates from a series of graphite-bearing Paleozoic greenschist- to upper amphibolite-facies metapelites, western Maine, USA, were analyzed for ammonium nitrogen () contents and isotopic composition (δ15NNH4) using the HF-digestion distillation technique followed by the EA-IRMS technique. Biotite separates, sampled from 9 individual metamorphic zones, contain 3000 to 100 ppm with a wide range in δ15N from +1.6‰ to +9.1‰. Average contents in biotite show a distinct decrease from about 2750 ppm for the lowest metamorphic grade (∼500 °C) down to 218 ppm for the highest metamorphic grade (∼685 °C). Decreasing abundances in are inversely correlated in a linear fashion with increasing K+ in biotite as a function of metamorphic grade and are interpreted as a devolatilization effect. Despite expected increasing δ15NNH4 values in biotite with nitrogen loss, a significant decrease from the Garnet Zones to the Staurolite Zones was found, followed by an increase to the Sillimanite Zones. This pattern for δ15NNH4 values in biotite inversely correlates with Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios in biotite and is discussed in the framework of isotopic fractionation due to different exchange processes between or , reflecting devolatilization history and redox conditions during metamorphism.  相似文献

Temporal variations in the concentration and N isotopic ratios of inorganic N (NH4– and NO3–N) as affected by the soil temperature regime together with the input of bird excreta were analyzed in a sedentary soil under a dense colony (1.6 nests/m2) of breeding Black-tailed Gulls (Laruscrassirostris: a ground-nesting seabird). Surface soil samples were taken monthly from mid-March to late July 2005 from Kabushima Island, Hachinohe, northeastern Japan. The spatial concentration of inorganic N in the soils varied considerably on all sampling dates. There may be a statistically significant trend, showing increased NH4–N content from settlement up to early June when the input of fecal N attains its maximum, and then decreases towards the end of breeding activity (early August). Abundant NO3–N was observed in all soils, particularly in the later stage of breeding (up to 3800 mg-N/kg dry soil), refuting earlier claims that nitrification is unimportant in the soils. δ15N values of NH4 in the soils showed unusually high values up to +51‰, reflecting N isotope fractionation due to volatilization of NH3 during the mineralization. Mean δ15N values of the monthly collected totals of NH4 and NO3 were not significantly different at the 5% level based on ANOVA and significant differences were observed only among the three means of NO3–N collected in mid-March (settlement of colony: δ15N = −0.2 ± 3.5‰) and late July (later stages of breeding: δ15N = +22.1 ± 7.0‰, +23.3 ± 7.8‰) at the 1% and 5% levels by t-test, respectively. Such an observation of significantly increased δ15N values for NO3–N in soils from the fledgling stage indicates the integration of denitrification coupled with nitrification under a limited supply of fecal N.  相似文献

The isotopic compositions of commercially available herbicides were analyzed to determine their respective 15N, 13C and 37Cl signatures for the purposes of developing a discrete tool for tracing and identifying non-point source contaminants in agricultural watersheds. Findings demonstrate that of the agrochemicals evaluated, chlorine stable isotopes signatures range between δ37Cl = −4.55‰ and +3.40‰, whereas most naturally occurring chlorine stable isotopes signatures, including those of road salt, sewage sludge and fertilizers, vary in a narrow range about the Standard Mean Ocean Chloride (SMOC) between −2.00‰ and +1.00‰. Nitrogen stable isotope values varied widely from δ15N = −10.86‰ to +1.44‰ and carbon stable isotope analysis gave an observed range between δ13C = −37.13‰ and −21.35‰ for the entire suite of agro-chemicals analyzed. When nitrogen, carbon and chlorine stable isotope analyses were compared in a cross-correlation analysis, statistically independent isotopic signatures exist suggesting a new potential tracer tool for identifying herbicides in the environment.  相似文献

This paper provides the first measurements of the nitrogen (N) concentrations and isotopic compositions of high- and ultrahigh-pressure mafic eclogites, aimed at characterizing the subduction input flux of N in deeply subducting altered oceanic crust (AOC). The samples that were studied are from the Raspas Complex (Ecuador), Lago di Cignana (Italy), the Zambezi Belt (Zambia) and Cabo Ortegal (Spain), together representing subduction to 50-90 km depths. The eclogites contain 2-20 ppm N with δ15Nair values ranging from −1 to +8‰. These values overlap those of altered oceanic crust, but are distinct from values for fresh MORB (for the latter, ∼1.1 ppm N and δ15Nair ∼ −4‰). Based on N data in combination with other trace element data, the eclogite suites can be subdivided into those that are indistinguishable from their likely protolith, AOC, with or without superimposed effects of devolatilization (Lago di Cignana, Cabo Ortegal), and those that have experienced metasomatic additions during subduction-zone metamorphism (Zambezi Belt, Raspas). For the former group, the lack of a detectable loss of N in the eclogites, compared to various altered MORB compositions, suggests the retention of N in deeply subducted oceanic crust. The metasomatic effects affecting the latter group can be best explained by mixing with a (meta)sedimentary component, resulting in correlated enrichments of N and other trace elements (in particular, Ba and Pb) thought to be mobilized during HP/UHP metamorphism. Serpentinized and high-pressure metamorphosed peridotites, associated with the eclogites at Raspas and Cabo Ortegal, contain 3-15 ppm N with δ15Nair values ranging from +3 to +6‰, significantly higher than the generally accepted values for the MORB mantle (δ15Nair ∼ −5‰). Based on their relatively high N contents and their homogeneous and positive δ15N values, admixing of sedimentary N is also indicated for the serpentinized peridotites. One possible pathway for the addition of sediment-derived N into eclogites and peridotites involves mixing with fluids along the slab-mantle wedge interface. Alternatively, sedimentary N could be incorporated into peridotites during serpentinization at bending-related faults at the outer rise and, during later deserpentinization, released into fluids that then infiltrate overlying rocks. Deep retention of N in subducting oceanic crust should be considered in any attempt to balance subduction inputs with outputs in the form of arc volcanic gases. If materials such as these eclogites and serpentinized peridotites are eventually subducted to beyond sub-arc depths into the deeper mantle, containing some fraction of their forearc-subarc N inventory (documented here), they could deliver isotopically heavy N into the mantle to potentially be sampled by plume-related magmas.  相似文献

We have investigated the N geochemistry of minerals and rocks from contact metamorphic aureoles and hydrothermal vent complexes (HVC) in the Karoo Basin in South Africa. The HVC formed during phreatic eruptions associated with rapid devolatilization and pressure build-up in contact aureoles around early Jurassic sill intrusions. By combining outcrop data from a HVC and core data from contact aureoles, we investigate the relationship between light element release during metamorphism and vertical fluid migration. Sandstone and breccia from the HVC contain early-diagenetic ammonium -bearing feldspar (buddingtonite) and illite. Ammonium occupies up to 95% of the A site in feldspar, corresponding to concentrations up to 5.2 wt% N. Bulk-rock N isotope data for rocks from inside and outside the hydrothermal vent complex fall into two distinct groups. Background samples have δ15Nair between +1.5‰ and +4.9‰, whereas minerals from the vent complex have δ15N in the range +7.5 to +10.6‰. The N geochemistry of contact metamorphic shale from the lower stratigraphic units of the Karoo Basin shows that the vitrinite reflectance and δ15N values are positively correlated. Shale with reflectivity values >4%Ro are enriched in 15N, with δ15N values between +6‰ and +14‰, implying the release of isotopically light N into metamorphic fluids (probably as N2). We suggest that the relatively high δ15N values of the early-diagenetic buddingtonite in the HVC reflect exchange of buddingtonite with N-bearing fluids ascending from greater depth after their release during contact metamorphism and dehydration. We present a qualitative model whereby hydrothermal vent complexes represent fluid flow structures after their formation, focusing N-bearing metamorphic fluids sourced in deeper levels of the basin. The release of organic N from sediments at depth in volcanic basins could play a role in the geochemical cycle of N, becoming particularly important during periods of intense volcanic activity.  相似文献

Ammonia (NH3) is the major intermediate phase in the pathway of nitrogen (N) transfer from the fixed N phases (e.g., in crustal material) to free N2 (e.g., in natural gas reservoirs and volcanic gases). Yet the N isotopic behavior during these N-cycling processes remains poorly known. In an attempt to contribute to the understanding of N cycling using N isotopes, we carried out laboratory experiments to investigate the N isotopic effect associated with thermal decomposition of ammonia (2NH3 → N2 + 3H2). Pure NH3 (with initial δ15NNH3 of ∼ −2‰, relative to air standard) was sealed into quartz tubes and thermally decomposed at 600, 700 or 800 °C from 2 hours to 500 days. With the progress of the reaction, the δ15N of the remaining NH3 and the accumulated N2 increased from −2 to +35‰ and from −20 to −2‰, respectively. The differences of the N-isotope fractionations at the three temperatures are not significant. Modeling using the Rayleigh distillation model yielded similar kinetic N-isotope fractionation factors (αN2-NH3) of 0.983 ± 0.002 for 600, 700 and 800 °C. Applied to geological settings, this significant isotope discrimination (∼17‰) associated with partial decomposition of NH3/NH4+ from crustal sources (δ15Naverage ∼ +6.3‰) can produce mantle-like (i.e. ∼ −5‰) or even lower δ15N values of N2. This may explain the large variation of δ15N (−20 to +30‰) of N2 in natural gas reservoirs. It can also possibly explain the extreme 15N-depletion of N2 in some volcanic gases. This possibility has to be carefully considered when using N isotopes to trace geological N cycling across subduction zones by analysis of volcanic N2.  相似文献

Unusual 18O depletion, with δ18O values as negative as −10‰ to −4‰ relative to VSMOW, was reported in zircons from ultrahigh-pressure eclogite-facies metamorphic rocks in the Dabie-Sulu orogenic belt, China. But it is critical for the negative δ18O zircons to be distinguished between magmatic and metamorphic origins, because the 18O depletion can be acquired by high-T eclogite-facies metamorphism of meteoric-hydrothermally altered low δ18O rocks. While zircon O diffusion kinetics has placed a reasonable constraint on this, zircon trace element compositions can provide a straightforward distinction between the magmatic and metamorphic origins. This paper reports our finding of unusual 18O depletion in zircon from granitic gneiss in the northeastern end of the Sulu orogen. Zircon δ18O values vary from −7.8‰ to −3.1‰ along a profile of 50 m length at Zaobuzhen. They are close to extremely low δ18O values of −9.0‰ to −5.9‰ for metagranite at Qinglongshan and adjacent areas in the southwestern end of the Sulu orogen. CL imaging suggests that the low δ18O zircons at Zaobuzhen are primarily of magmatic origin, but underwent different degrees of metamorphic modification. Zircon U-Pb dating yields middle Neoproterozoic ages of 751 ± 27 to 779 ± 25 Ma for protolith crystallization and Triassic ages of 214 ± 10 to 241 ± 33 Ma for metamorphic resetting. However, no metamorphic modification occurs in zircon REE patterns that only indicate magmatic recrystallization and hydrothermal alteration, respectively. Thus, the negative δ18O zircons are interpreted as crystallizing from negative δ18O magmas due to melting of meteoric-hydrothermally altered negative δ18O rocks in an active rift setting at about 780 Ma. The variation in zircon δ18O values indicates considerable O isotope heterogeneity in its granitic protolith. Zircon Lu-Hf isotope analyses give positive εHf(t) values of 1.6-4.1 and Hf model ages of 1.18-1.30 Ga. This suggests that the granitic protolith was derived from the mid-Neoproterozoic reworking of late Mesoproterozoic juvenile crust. The metagranites at Zaobuzhen and Qinglongshan, about 450 km apart, are two known occurrences of the unusually low δ18O zircons below −6‰ so far reported in the Sulu orogen. They are similar to each other in both protolith and metamorphic ages, so that they share the same nature of both Neoproterozoic protolith and Triassic metamorphism. Therefore, the locally negative δ18O zircons may register centers of low δ18O magmatism during the supercontinental rifting.  相似文献

Nitrogen and carbon isotopic compositions, together with mineralogy and trace element geochemistry, were studied in a few kerogen-rich Paleoarchean cherts, a barite and a dolomitic stromatolite belonging to the eastern (Dixon Island Formation) and western (Dresser and Strelley Pool Chert Formations; North Pole Dome and Marble Bar) terranes of Pilbara Craton, Western Australia. The aim of the study was to search for 15N-depleted isotopic signatures, often found in kerogens of this period, and explain the origin of these anomalies. Trace elements suggest silica precipitation by hydrothermal fluids as the main process of chert formation with a contamination from volcanoclastic detritus. This is supported by the occurrence of hydrothermal-derived minerals in the studied samples indicating precipitation temperatures up to 350 °C. Only a dolomitic stromatolite from Strelley Pool shows a superchondritic Y/Ho ratio of 72 and a positive Eu/Eu* anomaly of 1.8, characteristic of chemical precipitates from the Archean seawater. The bulk δ13C vs. δ15N values measured in the cherts show a roughly positive co-variation, except for one sample from the North Pole (PI-85-00). The progressive enrichment in 15N and 13C from a pristine source having δ13C ? −36‰ and δ15N ? −4‰ is correlated with a progressive depletion in N content and to variations in Ba/La and Co/As ratios. These trends have been interpreted as a progressive hydrothermal alteration of the cherts by metamorphic fluids. Isotopic exchange at 350 °C between NH4+(rock) and N2(fluid) may explain the isotopic and elemental composition of N in the studied cherts. However, we need to assume isotopic exchange at 350 °C between carbonate C and graphite to explain the large 13C enrichment recorded. Only sample PI-85-00 shows a large N loss (90%) with a positive δ15N value (+11‰), while C (up to 120 ppm and δ13C −38‰) seems to be unaffected. This pattern has been interpreted as the result of devolatilization and alteration (oxidation) of graphite by low-temperature fluids. The 15N-13C-depleted pristine source has δ 15N values from −7‰ to −4‰ and 40Ar/36Ar ratios from 30,000 to 60,000, compatible with an inorganic mantle N source, although the elemental abundance ratios N/C and 40Ar/C are not exactly the same with the mantle source. The component alternatively could be explained by elemental fractionation from metabolic activity of chemolithoautotrophs and methanogens at the proximity to the hydrothermal vents. However, ambiguities between mantle vs organic sources of N subsist and need further experimental work to be fully elucidated.  相似文献

Bulk-rock chlorine content and isotopic composition (δ37Cl) were determined in oceanic serpentinites, high-pressure metaperidotites and metasediments in order to gain constraints on the global chlorine cycle associated with hydrothermal alteration and subduction of oceanic lithosphere. The distribution of insoluble chlorine in oceanic serpentinites was also investigated by electron microprobe. The hydrothermally-altered ultramafic samples were dredged along the South West Indian Ridge and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The high-pressure metamorphic samples were collected in the Western Alps: metaperidotites in the Erro-Tobbio unit and metasediments in the Schistes Lustrés nappe.Oceanic serpentinites show relatively large variations of bulk-rock Cl contents and δ37Cl values with mean values of 1105 ± 596 ppm and −0.7 ± 0.4‰, respectively (n = 8; 1σ). Serpentines formed after olivine (meshes) show lower Cl content than those formed after orthopyroxene (bastites). In bastites of two different samples, Cl is positively correlated with Al2O3 and negatively correlated with SiO2. These relationships are interpreted as reflecting preferential Cl-incorporation into the bastite structure distorted by Al (substituted for Si) rather than different alteration conditions between olivine and orthopyroxene minerals. High-pressure metaperidotites display relatively homogeneous Cl contents and δ37Cl values with mean values of 467 ± 88 ppm and −1.4 ± 0.1‰, respectively (n = 7; 1σ). A macroscopic high-pressure olivine-bearing vein, formed from partial devolatilization of serpentinites at ∼2.5 GPa and 500-600 °C, shows a Cl content and a δ37Cl value of 603 ppm and −1.6‰, respectively. Metasediments (n = 2) show low whole-rock Cl contents (<15 ppm Cl) that did not allow Cl isotope analyses to be obtained. The range of negative δ37Cl values observed in oceanic serpentinites is likely to result from water-rock interaction with fluids that have negative δ37Cl values. The homogeneity of δ37Cl values from the high-pressure olivine-bearing vein and the metaperidotite samples implies that progressive loss of Cl inherited from oceanic alteration throughout subduction did not significantly fractionate Cl isotopes. Chlorine recycled in subduction zones via metaperidotites should thus show a range of δ37Cl values similar to the range found in oceanic serpentinized peridotites.  相似文献

We present high-precision measurements of Mg and Fe isotopic compositions of olivine, orthopyroxene (opx), and clinopyroxene (cpx) for 18 lherzolite xenoliths from east central China and provide the first combined Fe and Mg isotopic study of the upper mantle. δ56Fe in olivines varies from 0.18‰ to −0.22‰ with an average of −0.01 ± 0.18‰ (2SD, n = 18), opx from 0.24‰ to −0.22‰ with an average of 0.04 ± 0.20‰, and cpx from 0.24‰ to −0.16‰ with an average of 0.10 ± 0.19‰. δ26Mg of olivines varies from −0.25‰ to −0.42‰ with an average of −0.34 ± 0.10‰ (2SD, n = 18), opx from −0.19‰ to −0.34‰ with an average of −0.25 ± 0.10‰, and cpx from −0.09‰ to −0.43‰ with an average of −0.24 ± 0.18‰. Although current precision (∼±0.06‰ for δ56Fe; ±0.10‰ for δ26Mg, 2SD) limits the ability to analytically distinguish inter-mineral isotopic fractionations, systematic behavior of inter-mineral fractionation for both Fe and Mg is statistically observed: Δ56Feol-cpx = −0.10 ± 0.12‰ (2SD, n = 18); Δ56Feol-opx = −0.05 ± 0.11‰; Δ26Mgol-opx = −0.09 ± 0.12‰; Δ26Mgol-cpx = −0.10 ± 0.15‰. Fe and Mg isotopic composition of bulk rocks were calculated based on the modes of olivine, opx, and cpx. The average δ56Fe of peridotites in this study is 0.01 ± 0.17‰ (2SD, n = 18), similar to the values of chondrites but slightly lower than mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) and oceanic island basalts (OIB). The average δ26Mg is −0.30 ± 0.09‰, indistinguishable from chondrites, MORB, and OIB. Our data support the conclusion that the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) has chondritic δ56Fe and δ26Mg.The origin of inter-mineral fractionations of Fe and Mg isotopic ratios remains debated. δ56Fe between the main peridotite minerals shows positive linear correlations with slopes within error of unity, strongly suggesting intra-sample mineral-mineral Fe and Mg isotopic equilibrium. Because inter-mineral isotopic equilibrium should be reached earlier than major element equilibrium via chemical diffusion at mantle temperatures, Fe and Mg isotope ratios of coexisting minerals could be useful tools for justifying mineral thermometry and barometry on the basis of chemical equilibrium between minerals. Although most peridotites in this study exhibit a narrow range in δ56Fe, the larger deviations from average δ56Fe for three samples likely indicate changes due to metasomatic processes. Two samples show heavy δ56Fe relative to the average and they also have high La/Yb and total Fe content, consistent with metasomatic reaction between peridotite and Fe-rich and isotopically heavy melt. The other sample has light δ56Fe and slightly heavy δ26Mg, which may reflect Fe-Mg inter-diffusion between peridotite and percolating melt.  相似文献

A combined in situ SIMS and LA-(MC)-ICPMS study of U-Pb ages, trace elements, O and Lu-Hf isotopes was conducted for zircon from eclogite-facies metamorphic rocks in the Sulu orogen. The two microbeam techniques sampled various depths of zircon domains, revealing different element and isotope relationships between residual magmatic cores and new metamorphic rims and thus the geochemical architecture of metamorphic zircons which otherwise cannot be recognized by the single microbeam technique. This enables discrimination of metamorphic growth from different subtypes of metamorphic recrystallization. Magmatic cores with U-Pb ages of 769 ± 9 Ma have positive δ18O values of 0.1-10.1‰, high Th/U and 176Lu/177Hf ratios, high REE contents, and steep MREE-HREE patterns with negative Eu anomalies. They are interpreted as crystallizing from positive δ18O magmas during protolith emplacement. In contrast, newly grown domains have concordant U-Pb ages of 204 ± 4 to 252 ± 7 Ma and show negative δ18O values of −10.0‰ to −2.2‰, low Th/U and 176Lu/177Hf ratios, low REE contents, and flat HREE patterns with weak to no Eu anomalies. They are interpreted as growing from negative δ18O fluids that were produced by metamorphic dehydration of high-T glacial-hydrothermally altered rocks during continental subduction-zone metamorphism. Differences in δ18O between different domains within single grains vary from 0.8‰ to 12.5‰, suggesting different degrees of O isotope exchange between the positive δ18O magmatic core and the negative δ18O metamorphic fluid during the metamorphism. The magmatic zircons underwent three subtypes of metamorphic recrystallization, depending on their accessibility to negative δ18O fluids. The zircons recrystallized in solid-state maintained positive δ18O values, and REE and Lu-Hf isotopes of protolith zircon, but their U-Pb ages are lowered. The zircons recrystallized through dissolution exhibit negative δ18O values similar to the metamorphic growths, almost completely reset U-Pb ages, and partially reset REE systems. The zircons recrystallized through replacement show variably negative δ18O values, and partially reset REE, and U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic systems. Therefore, this study places robust constraints on the origin of metamorphic zircons in eclogite-facies rocks and provides a methodological framework for linking the different types of metamorphic zircons to petrological processes during continental collision.  相似文献

This study investigates the application of sulphur isotope ratios (δ34S) in combination with carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) ratios to understand the influence of environmental sulphur on the isotopic composition of archaeological human and faunal remains from Roman era sites in Oxfordshire, UK. Humans (n = 83), terrestrial animals (n = 11), and freshwater fish (n = 5) were analysed for their isotope values from four locations in the Thames River Valley, and a broad range of δ34S values were found. The δ34S values from the terrestrial animals were highly variable (−13.6‰ to +0.5‰), but the δ34S values of the fish were clustered and 34S-depleted (−20.9‰ to −17.3‰). The results of the faunal remains suggest that riverine sulphur influenced the terrestrial sulphur isotopic signatures. Terrestrial animals were possibly raised on the floodplains of the River Thames, where highly 34S-depleted sulphur influenced the soil. The humans show the largest range of δ34S values (−18.8‰ to +9.6‰) from any archaeological context to date. No differences in δ34S values were found between the males (−7.8 ± 6.0‰) and females (−5.3 ± 6.8‰), but the females had a linear correlation (R2 = 0.71; p < 0.0001) between their δ15N and δ34S compositions. These δ34S results suggest a greater dietary variability for the inhabitants of Roman Oxfordshire than previously thought, with some individuals eating solely terrestrial protein resources and others showing a diet almost exclusively based on freshwater protein such as fish. Such large dietary variability was not visible by analysing only the carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, and this research represents the largest and most detailed application of δ34S analysis to examine dietary practices (including breastfeeding and weaning patterns) during the Romano-British Period.  相似文献

By taking advantage of having depth profiles between contrasting lithologies from core samples of the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling (CCSD) project, a combined study was carried out to examine changes in mineral H isotope, total water and hydroxyl contents in garnet and omphacite across the contacts between ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) eclogite and gneiss in the Sulu orogen, east-central China. The samples of interest were from two continuous core segments from the CCSD main hole at depths of 734.21-737.16 and 929.67-932.86 m, respectively. The results show δD values of −116‰ to  − 64‰ for garnet and −104‰ to −82‰ for omphacite, consistent with incorporation of meteoric water into protoliths of UHP metamorphic rocks by high-T alteration. Both equilibrium and disequilibrium H isotope fractionations were observed between garnet and omphacite, suggesting fluid-assisted H isotope exchange at local scales during amphibolite-facies retrogression. While bulk water analysis gave total H2O concentrations of 522-1584 ppm for garnet and 1170-20745 ppm for omphacite, structural hydroxyl analysis yielded H2O contents of 80-413 ppm for garnet and 228-412 ppm for omphacite. It appears that significant amounts of molecular H2O are present in the minerals, pointing to enhanced capacity of water storage in the UHP eclogite minerals. Hydrogen isotope variations in the transition between eclogite and gneiss show correlations with variations in their water contents. Petrographically, the degree of retrograde metamorphism generally increases with decreasing distance from the eclogite-gneiss boundary. Thus, retrograde metamorphism results in mineral reactions and H isotope variation. Because hydroxyl solubility in nominally anhydrous minerals decreases with dropping pressure, significant amounts of water are expected to be released from the minerals during decompression exhumation. Decompression exsolution of structural hydroxyl from 1 m3 volume of eclogite composed of only garnet and omphacite results in release of a quantitative estimate of 3.07-3.44 kg water that can form 140-156 kg amphibole during exhumation. Therefore, it is concluded that fluid for retrogression of the eclogites away from the eclogite-gneiss boundary was derived from the decompression exsolution of structural hydroxyl and molecular H2O in nominally anhydrous minerals. For the eclogites adjacent to gneiss, in contrast, the retrograde metamorphism was principally caused by aqueous fluid from the gneiss which is relatively rich in water. Consequently, both the origin and availability of metamorphic fluid during exhumation of deeply subducted continental crust are deciphered by this combined study focusing on the transitions and the retrograde processes between the felsic and mafic UHP rocks.  相似文献

We report new chemical and isotopic data from 26 volcanic and geothermal gases, vapor condensates, and thermal water samples, collected along the Nicaraguan volcanic front. The samples were analyzed for chemical abundances and stable isotope compositions, with a focus on nitrogen abundances and isotope ratios. These data are used to evaluate samples for volatile contributions from magma, air, air-saturated water, and the crust. Samples devoid of crustal contamination (based upon He isotope composition) but slightly contaminated by air or air-saturated water are corrected using N2/Ar ratios in order to obtain primary magmatic values, composed of contributions from upper mantle and subducted hemipelagic sediment on the down-going plate. Using a mantle endmember with δ15N = −5‰ and N2/He = 100 and a subducted sediment component with δ15N = +7‰ and N2/He = 10,500, the average sediment contribution to Nicaraguan volcanic and geothermal gases was determined to be 71%. Most of the gases were dominated by sediment-derived nitrogen, but gas from Volcán Mombacho, the southernmost sampling location, had a mantle signature (46% from subducted sediment, or 54% from the mantle) and an affinity with mantle-dominated gases discharging from Costa Rica localities to the south. High CO2/N2 exc. ratios (N2 exc. is the N2 abundance corrected for contributions from air) in the south are similar to those in Costa Rica, and reflect the predominant mantle wedge input, whereas low ratios in the north indicate contribution by altered oceanic crust and/or preferential release of nitrogen over carbon from the subducting slab. Sediment-derived nitrogen fluxes at the Nicaraguan volcanic front, estimated by three methods, are 7.8 × 108 mol N/a from 3He flux, 6.9 × 108 mol/a from SO2 flux, and 2.1 × 108 and 1.3 × 109 mol/a from CO2 fluxes calculated from 3He and SO2, respectively. These flux results are higher than previous estimates for Central America, reflecting the high sediment-derived volatile contribution and the high nitrogen content of geothermal and volcanic gases in Nicaragua. The fluxes are also similar to but higher than estimated hemipelagic nitrogen inputs at the trench, suggesting addition of N from altered oceanic basement is needed to satisfy these flux estimates. The similarity of the calculated input of N via the trench to our calculated outputs suggests that little or none of the subducted nitrogen is being recycled into the deeper mantle, and that it is, instead, returned to the surface via arc volcanism.  相似文献

Silica phytoliths, which are deposits of opal-A that precipitate in the intra- and intercellular spaces of plant tissues during transpiration, commonly contain small amounts of occluded organic matter. In this paper, we investigate whether the δ13C values of phytoliths from a C4 grass, Calamovilfa longifolia, vary in response to climatic variables that can affect the carbon-isotope composition of plant tissues. There is no significant correlation (r2 < 0.3) between climate variables and the δ13C values of C. longifolia tissues (average δ13Ctissue = −13.1 ± 0.6 ‰; n = 70) across the North American prairies. However, plant tissue δ13C values are lower for grasses collected in populated areas where the δ13C value of atmospheric CO2 is expected to be lower because of fossil fuel burning. Phytolith δ13C values are more variable (δ13C = −27.3 to −23.0‰; average = −25.1 ± 1.3‰; n = 34) and more sensitive to changes in aridity than whole tissue δ13C values. The strongest correlations are obtained between the δ13C values of stem or sheath phytoliths and humidity (r2 = 0.3), latitude (r2 = 0.4) and amount of precipitation (r2 = 0.5). However, use of these relationships is limited by the wide spread in δ13C values of phytoliths from different plant tissues at the same location. We have been unable to infer any relationship between δ13C values of phytoliths and expected variations in the δ13C values of atmospheric CO2. The C. longifolia phytoliths are depleted of 13C relative to tissue carbon by 10-14‰. This means that the phytoliths examined in this study have carbon isotopic compositions within the range reported previously for phytoliths from C3 plants. This observation may further limit the usefulness of soil-phytolith assemblage δ13C values for identifying shifts in grassland C3:C4 ratios.  相似文献

The patterns of variation in natural abundance of foliar and soil (15N) (expressed as δ15N) related to geographical and climatic variables frequently vary over plant species or plant function groups. It is essential to identify the pattern of foliar δ15N for specific plant species which has a widespread distribution and to explore the underlying mechanisms in the context of environmental change such as global warming and anthropogenic nitrogen deposition. Oriental oak (Quercus variabilis Bl.), characterized by cork bark, is a widely distributing deciduous broadleaf tree species that can be found in temperate and subtropical areas of East Asia. In this study, the variations in foliar and soil 15N were investigated based on the data of leaf and soil samples collected in 22 stands over eastern China (from 24 to 41° N in latitude and 102 to 123° E in longitude), and the mechanisms were discussed. The results showed that for oriental oak stands, mean foliar and soil δ15N were − 4.8‰ and 2.0‰, respectively, indicating an evident 15N enrichment in the soils. The average foliar δ15N value of oriental oak in warm temperate forest was significantly lower (p < 0.01), while a higher enrichment factor was also observed in temperate forests, than that in the subtropical areas. Over the eastern China, the foliar δ15N increased linearly and significantly with increasing mean annual precipitation (MAP) (R2 = 0.481 and p < 0.001) and mean annual temperature (MAT) (R2 = 0.285 and p = 0.01) and decreasing pH value of rain water (R2 = 0.333 and p = 0.005). With these results in eastern China, there are great implications in understanding how nitrogen dynamics of ecosystems responds to warming, drought and acid rain.  相似文献

Fatty acid (FA) composition and stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) signatures of four aquatic plants, plankton, sediment, soil and suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) collected from open floodplain lakes (Várzea) and rivers of the central Brazilian Amazon basin were gathered during high and low water stages in 2009. SPOM from Várzea had a major contribution of autochthonous material from phytoplankton and C3 aquatic plants. As shown from stable isotope composition of SPOM (δ13C −31.3 ± 3.2‰; δ15N 3.6 ± 1.5‰), the C4 aquatic phanerogam (δ13C −13.1 ± 0.5‰; δ15N 4.1 ± 1.7‰) contribution appeared to be weak, although these plants were the most abundant macrophyte in the Várzea. During low water season, increasing concentration of 18:3ω3 was recorded in the SPOM of lakes. This FA, abundant mainly in the Várzea plants (up to 49% of total FAs), was due to the accumulation of their detritus in the ecosystem. This dry season, when connectivity with the river mainstem was restricted, was also characterized by a high concentration in the SPOM of the cyanobacteria marker 16:1ω7 (up to 21% of total FAs). The FA compositions of SPOM from the Amazon River also exhibited significant seasonal differences, in particular a higher concentration of 16:1ω7 and 18:3ω3 during the dry season. This suggests a seasonal contribution of autochthonous material produced in Várzea to the Amazon River SPOM.  相似文献

Stable isotopes (H, O, C) were determined for ground and surface waters collected from two relatively undisturbed massive sulfide deposits (Halfmile Lake and Restigouche) in the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC), New Brunswick, Canada. Additional waters from active and inactive mines in the BMC were also collected. Oxygen and hydrogen isotopes of surface and shallow groundwaters from both the Halfmile Lake and Restigouche deposits are remarkably uniform (− 13 to − 14‰ and − 85 to − 95‰ for δ18OVSMOW and δ2HVSMOW, respectively). These values are lighter than predicted for northern New Brunswick and, combined with elevated deuterium excess values, suggest that recharge waters are dominated by winter precipitation, recharged during spring melting. Deeper groundwaters from the Restigouche deposit, and from active and inactive mines have heavier δ18OVSMOW ratios (up to − 10.8‰) than shallow groundwaters suggesting recharge under warmer climate or mixing with Shield-type brines. Some of the co-variation in Cl concentrations and δ18OVSMOW ratios can be explained by mixing between saline and shallow recharge water end-members. Carbon isotopic compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) are variable, ranging from − 15 to − 5‰ δ13CVPDB for most ground and surface waters. Much of the variation in the carbon isotopes is consistent with closed system groundwater evolution involving soil zone CO2 and fracture zone carbonate minerals (calcite, dolomite and siderite; average = − 6.5‰ δ13CVPDB). The DIC of saline Restigouche deposit groundwater is isotopically heavy (∼+ 12‰ δ13CVPDB), indicating carbon isotopic fractionation from methanogenesis via CO2 reduction, consistent with the lack of dissolved sulfate in these waters and the observation of CH4-degassing during sampling.  相似文献

The oxygen-isotope compositions (obtained by laser fluorination) of hand-picked separates of isolated forsterite, isolated olivine and chondrules from the Tagish Lake carbonaceous chondrite describe a line (δ17O = 0.95 * δ18O − 3.24; R2 = 0.99) similar to the trend known for chondrules from other carbonaceous chondrites. The isolated forsterite grains (Fo99.6-99.8; δ18O = −7.2‰ to −5.5‰; δ17O = −9.6‰ to −8.2‰) are more 16O-rich than the isolated olivine grains (Fo39.6-86.8; δ18O = 3.1‰ to 5.1‰; δ17O = −0.3‰ to 2.2‰), and have chemical and isotopic characteristics typical of refractory forsterite. Chondrules contain olivine (Fo97.2-99.8) with oxygen-isotope compositions (δ18O = −5.2‰ to 5.9‰; δ17O = −8.1‰ to 1.2‰) that overlap those of isolated forsterite and isolated olivine. An inverse relationship exists between the Δ17O values and Fo contents of Tagish Lake isolated forsterite and chondrules; the chondrules likely underwent greater exchange with 16O-poor nebular gases than the forsterite. The oxygen-isotope compositions of the isolated olivine grains describe a trend with a steeper slope (1.1 ± 0.1, R2 = 0.94) than the carbonaceous chondrite anhydrous mineral line (CCAMslope = 0.95). The isolated olivine may have crystallized from an evolving melt that exchanged with 16O-poor gases of somewhat different composition than those which affected the chondrules and isolated forsterite. The primordial components of the Tagish Lake meteorite formed under conditions similar to other carbonaceous chondrite meteorite groups, especially CMs. Its alteration history has its closest affinities to CI carbonaceous chondrites.  相似文献

In a diamond from New South Wales (Australia), cubic and octahedral growth sectors, as identified by cathodoluminescence (CL), show slight differences in N-contents of 29 and 42 ppm respectively but no significant differences in either δ13C, δ15N and nitrogen aggregation state with values at +1.96‰, +19.4‰, and 25% Type IaAB aggregation, respectively. Two gem cubes from the Orapa kimberlite (Botswana) were studied by CL revealing a nonfaceted cubic growth. Accordingly, nine other gem cubes were combusted and yielded δ13C-values from -5.33‰ to -6.63‰, δ15N from -1.0‰ to -5.5‰, and nitrogen contents from 914 to 1168 ppm, with nitrogen aggregation state being only Type IaA (zero % B). The gem cubes show striking similarities to fibrous/coated diamonds, not only in both δ13C ranges (less than 3‰ from -5 to -8‰), but also in the high levels of nitrogen (≈ 1000 ppm), suggesting that the two diamond types are related. Additionally, no δ15N variation was detected between the cube and octahedral growth sectors of the Australian diamond, in the cube sectors of the nine gem cubes from Botswana, nor in fibrous/coated diamonds previously studied. These analyses contrast with an earlier study on a synthetic diamond, which reported a strong kinetic fractionation of N-isotopes of about 40‰ between cube and octahedral growth. The present evidence, therefore, suggests that kinetic fractionation of N-isotopes does not operate during natural diamond formation.  相似文献
